finished my fanbind of Interim by starkraving (@punishandenslavesuckers) and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out!

it was my first fanbind and it's nowhere near perfect (the gold foil fought me every step of the way, the spine is about as straight as I am, and I forgot a somewhat crucial piece of cardstock beneath the bookcloth...) but i'm so, so happy to have this amazing fic on my shelf now, and i'm stoked to take what i've learned in the binding process this time into my next attempt!

It's BOOK TIME again! It has been forever since I last bound a book wow.

This is Interim by @punishandenslavesuckers, which is a fantastic botw post-canon Link/Zelda/Ganon fic that you all should go read if you haven't already. It's great, go check it out. I stayed up way too late reading it.

The binding is a sewn-board binding, which means the cover stiffeners are sewn directly into the text block, instead of wrapped around and glued to the endpapers. This makes for a very tidy and modern looking binding, AND because the boards are doubled (sewn in like the endpapers) allows for fun shenanigans like that indented triforce.

I'm SO proud of how the triforce came out! I was really careful with all of my measurements and it really paid off.

Oh yeah and I finally found a place with a good guillotine, so now I can make SMALLER books and still have nice crisp edges. Look at it, it's such a cute size. Perfect for holding.

Interim (and company) by starkraving

After what has literally been a year and a month, I can call this project finished. The highs and lows of American football. You understand. Very grateful to the author for having written it and letting me bind them a copy! More photos and process pics under the cut.

The bookcloth material is faux suede, and the title decoration is cut from a glossy transparent HTV. The effect is completely swoon worthy, and exactly as I'd imagined it. That said I had a difficult time conceptualizing a design for the case at all; my only working idea was the endband, ribbon bookmark, and head and tail decoration. For 6 months everything I was coming up with for the cover was clashing very hard against these elements. So instead I took steps backwards, and thought how I could make something simple still visually interesting. I decided the difference in physical texture and appearance between the faux suede cloth and a glossy transparent HTV could be just what I was looking for, and I think it worked incredibly well.

The endband is done with adapted renaissance endbands in opposing directions, with a simple wrap of red thread in the center. I don't think peek-a-boo is the right phrase but nonetheless. The head and tail are painted with spray paint, in a gradient pattern that fades as it nears the foredge. The light blue accent lines are also spray paint, applied with a stencil I drew and made myself.

Typesetting shots. I use Word to typeset, and everything is designed and arranged within the program. Body font is Cochineal, the decorative title font is Caesar, as well as Sheikah and Hylian script.

The tiny books are simple, using elements from the main bind to tie them together. These are the spin-off short stories starkraving recently released as part of the Interim series. A testament to exactly how long this bind took me to complete, otherwise I would have included these in the main book. Oh well, it means I got to make tiny books.

Hey, I know you've probably moved on from it already, but I just wanted to say thank you for writing the masterpiece that is Interim!! Genuinely one of my favorite interpretations of Link's character ever

Nobody else probably remembers this, but I remember a Captain Kangaroo gag when Mr. Moose gave a weather report that went something like this: "Well, in a very hours, it's going to get very, very dark. And then several hours after that, it's going to get light again!"

Mr. Moose's Weather Report is about the caliber of the "news" from Brian Fuller. He's all a-flutter that the next president will be named soon.

Hi! Binding for private libraries is a transformative work, so I have no issue with it and greatly encourage binding any of my fanworks as much as ppl like. :3

I only ask that the story being bound to page is never misrepresented as anything but a free fanwork that’s available online for everyone. If I make any request at all, it’s that the physical copy have the URL or QR code or source citation to find the original work somewhere within.

And in general, I would only ever be upset at a binder if someone bound the story, pretended the content was theirs, and tried to sell it for profit. If someone wants the labor of a binding, I want them to know they could have read it for free as a labor of love online first. ❤️
