Men 60 and over are purchasing g babies through surrogacy yet the average life span of men in England is 78.8 years. What plans do they have in place if they die before the babies are legally adults?

Almost 300 men aged over 50 have applied to become the legal father of a surrogate child over the past five years – and 43 of them are over 60, new figures reveal.

And a total of 95 single men applied to become a parent, reflecting a growing trend in men, especially older men, having babies alone with the help of surrogates.

Since the law changed in 2019 to give single people the same surrogacy rights as couple, there have been 2,162 applications from intended parents in England. 

A total of 293 would-be fathers are over 50, both solo and in couples, according to figures released following a Freedom of Information Act application from The Mail on Sunday.

Older women turning to surrogacy has already sparked debate, with high-profile figures such as Naomi Campbell using a surrogate to have children in their 50s.

And in June, a 72-year-old man was granted permission in Scotland to become the legal father of a three-year-old boy, born to a surrogate, despite the death of his wife.

Commenting on the new figures from the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service, fertility and family law expert Louisa Ghevaert said: ‘The numbers of single men and men over 50 applying for parental orders reflects wider trends in solo and later-life parenting that are set to continue.’

She added that the numbers also reflected ‘the fact there’s no legal upper age limit for a parental order’.

However, the latest disclosure has caused anger among some campaigners. Helen Gibson, of Surrogacy Concern, said: ‘We are appalled to see such high numbers of single men and older men pursuing surrogacy, often abroad and in commercial arrangements which are banned in the UK. This is a worrying trend in which mothers are erased from the lives of their children.’

But Alan White, of Surrogacy UK, said: ‘As a society, perhaps we’re more used to considering maternal instinct than we are paternal instinct, but the desire to become a parent can be strong whether you’re a man or a woman.’

The UK ranks as one of the worst countries to bring up twins and triplets, a shocking report has revealed.

Research from the Twins Trust found parents of such children are at least £20,000 worse off in the first year after birth, compared with those who have had two babies in succession.

In a ranking of developed nations that looked at financial help such as maternity pay, mental health support and childcare provision, the UK came 23rd out of 27.

Shauna Leven, chief executive of the Twins Trust, said: ‘This report lays bare the grim reality facing families with multiples – the financial burden, mental health toll and lack of support.’

The charity is calling on the Government to change maternity pay so it is paid per baby instead of per mother.

So, the current 338 projection has the NDP falling to 6 seats, and I didn't think much given that like I do think the NDP has major problems, but I saw the BC projection of only one seat, and it's only showing as lean, and I'm getting suspicious. So I looked back and the last time the NDP got less than 10% of the vote (the current national projection) was the 2000 election, in that election the NDP got 8.51% of the popular vote and 13 seats, including 3 in B.C.

Now obviously a lot has changed since 2000, for example that was when there were two conservative parties before they were united. There's also a very different electoral map. But I think there's more than one seat in the lower mainland that are comfortably NDP with well-liked MPs.

I'm bringing this up because people are thinking about strategic voting, but the assumption is a vote for the Liberals is a vote to keep the tories out, this isn't always true, and the 338 projection for seats, from what I understand is only estimating based on the regional and national trends, they don't have specific polling by district. So for example, a district like Vancouver Kingsway, which has Don Davies, who is as far as I know well-liked, he won with significant margins in every election he's been re-elected in. 338 projects it as Liberal likely.

My guess is that people in tighter races are the ones changing most, and extrapolating that evenly accross B.C. or even the lower mainland is warping the view of these comfortable NDP seats.

A most frustrating mistake has been made.

Mum had carpal tunnel surgery this morning - don't worry, the surgery went well. And so, for the next couple weeks, mum can't drive at all, which also means she can't care for my autistic brother with high support needs (and I'm not capable of taking care of his physical needs either). We found out about the surgery in mid-January so, quite sensibly, we booked for him to be in respite from 9th to 24th February. And arranged via his respite place relevant transport (aka taxis to and from his adult disabled daycares). Only, when we went to drop him off at his respite place yesterday evening, they weren't expecting us!

Somehow, in a most strange turn of events, a mistake had been made and he had been booked in for 9th to 24th... of APRIL!

APRIL?!?

Now, upon realising this mistake, his respite place invited us in to their office for tea, over which we discussed the issue. I emphasised that it was a medical emergency as I explained the situation to the support workers there and then to their managers over the phone (so I explained it thrice). We couldn't work out which of their staff had made the mistake but they took my brother for the night and promised to contact us the next day about what they could arrange. As we drove home, I rang his taxi company that usually transports him to one of his adult disabled daycares on Mondays and Thursdays and cancelled his transport for the following day.

And so it was that I was woken up (I'm insomniac) at half eight this morning by a phonecall from their manager. He told me they had managed to book my brother in from 9th to 12th and then from 13th to 21st of February. This means he will home on Wednesday 12th night and then for the whole weekend beginning on the 21st when we urgently need him to be in respite because we can't properly care for him. But I understand it's not the fault of any of the staff I spoke to and so I remained polite and thanked them for doing their best to sort this out.

However, this caused another problem to present itself - transport. Obviously, his respite place would arrange the transport for the days he is with them. But mum can't drive until after 24th/on the 25th. And our current Motability car is not adapted for me (the pedals are all on my bad side) so I can't drive very far or often in it, meaning I can't transport him either. (The next Motability car will be adapted for me! But we don't get that until April.)

As such, another phonecall had to be made. We rang social services and were also transferred over to the transport department, explaining the situation and necessary transport to each (so I explained it twice more).

So, it has been a drama. And the best of the situation has to be made. Although, we will really struggle to care for him on the days he is home during these two weeks, especially 12th and 13th February. Added to that, since we weren't expecting him to be home, we don't have enough for food for him to be here. (We live in the middle of nowhere with nothing and nobody.)

And so it is that despite our doing our best to be sensible and organised, it all went wrong anyway.

hard to explain why, but it seems "funding the NHS" is not a left-wing principle and in some ways is a right-wing one

this is not me saying that NHS privatization is good or whatever. im saying that the NHS functions in political discourse as a nationalist symbol perhaps to a greater extent than its practical importance for the population.

so when parties say "we will fund the NHS" (as they all do) they are not really talking about policy. to some extent they are doing the same messaging as "we support british values" or "we support the armed forces". they are trying to appear the good patriot to stir up right wing support. this doubly marginalises those who are both targets for the right and excluded by the NHS: particularly migrants

it can be hard to tell when the NHS itself is the subject of discourse rather than the NHS as a nationalist symbol. when the westminster parties are largely in agreement about how the institutions of state should be run, discussion of the NHS is basically always symbolic.

it's much the same as when the deficit or national debt was a typical talking point. in either case all the political messaging boils down to is repeating "our party is more responsible" when the agreed standards of "responsibility" include nationalist chauvinism and authoritarianism taken as given

to me one of the essential features of the left in britain is to have a negative stance on all institutions of the state. they are guilty until proven innocent. we do not assume that governments are mere caretakers for a predetermined apparatus of necessary institutions, left to tinker with balance sheets and guidelines. the NHS, for our own good, deserves a deep and merciless criticism which does not take any part of it for granted. it is never enough to say "it just needs more money" and assume that its functioning is mostly correct and apolitical

so I've been going down the dog training and breeding research rabbithole again, and as part of that I ended up on the service dogs subreddit - I think because I'd like to train my future dog to perform some psychiatric service dog tasks ideally, like noticing and interrupting panic attacks/dissociation, but it's not absolutely essential to me. I mostly think my mental health would benefit just from having a calm, well-trained dog to accompany me in my daily life and luckily the UK is generally very dog friendly.

BUT I got curious because the people on this subreddit hate fake service dogs, so I tried to look up the certification for assistance dogs in the UK... and there isn't one, apparently. the law defines assistance dogs based on their training and function but there's no formal way to "prove" their status, they're legally protected regardless (but can be excluded from some spaces if they're badly trained). so.... technically my future dog could just... be an assistance dog?

I think the only time it would really matter would be that I have a lot of medical trauma, and if I declare that my dog is an assistance dog it could accompany me to GP appointments and hospital waiting rooms apparently - and since those are government run services I think they'd likely cooperate (legally everywhere has to allow assistance dogs pretty much, but people don't know/respect the law. but apparently medical settings are good on that in the UK, again according to the subreddit). again, 90% of the time I'd just want a well trained dog to spend time with and calm me down, and I've really benefited in the past from that with a non-service dog who wasn't even that well trained but happened to be a calm presence.

but idk - I'm now panicking that I'd be misusing the assistance dog label and be one of those 'fakers'. even though I don't think that way about any other medical tool or disability support, and I don't know if it would impact anyone else negatively, and it's not like there is a formal certification in my country - the whole subreddit debate seems to be completely US-centric. but! I feel bad and guilty? because I could survive without an assistance dog and because a lot of the things I'd need the dog to do aren't specific to an assistance dog? idk
