Information Science vs Data Science: A Comparative Overview
Difference Between Information Science and Data Science
Although information science and data science sound alike, they focus on different things.
Information Science
Focus: Information science is about organizing and sharing information. It looks at how information is stored, found, and used.
Key Parts: This field includes areas like finding information, managing knowledge, and digital libraries. It’s all about how people use information and the systems that help them.
Tools and Techniques: Information scientists use tools to manage databases and improve how users experience information, making it easier for people to access what they need.
Applications: Common uses include creating library catalogs, designing information systems for businesses, and figuring out how to manage large amounts of data.
Data Science
Focus: Data science is about taking data and turning it into useful insights. It focuses on analyzing data to help make decisions.
Key Parts: This field includes things like data analysis, machine learning, and data visualization. It aims to find patterns in data and predict future trends.
Tools and Techniques: Data scientists use programming languages (like Python and R) and methods for analyzing data and building models to make predictions.
Applications: Data science is used in many areas, such as business analytics, marketing, fraud detection, healthcare insights, and social media trends.
Key Advantages: Data science offers important benefits, like better decision-making, the ability to predict trends, increased efficiency, personalized customer experiences, and improved risk management. By using data, organizations can gain valuable insights that help them grow and innovate.
Summary
In short, information science is about managing and sharing information well, while data science is about analyzing data to gain useful insights. Knowing the differences can help organizations make the most of both fields, especially with the valuable advantages that data science provides.

This #VeteransDay, I'm remembering and honoring my U.S. Naval Veteran mother, Yvonne Louise Russell, (1920 - 1990.) She enlisted three months before Pearl Harbor, serving in Fleet Post Office at Charleston, Norfolk, Parris Island and San Francisco. When the #Pentagon opened in 1948, she was one of the first female NCOs detailed there, somewhere in "D" Ring. She went on to have a successful career in #informationscience with Remington-RAND Corporation in New York, and as an educator, supporting us after my father passed. She was an exemplary and faithful #Catholic #Christian her entire life. She was truly one of the #GreatestGeneration. #amazingwomen #FPO #KoreanWar #KoreanWarEra #Navy #USNavy #Unisys #veteransday2022 #womenveterans #womenvets #womeninSTEM #WWII #WW2 #Waves https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck1itRJPmnd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Whoops.
Due to life, I actually forgot about this Tumblr account for about 3 months.
Whoops.
So, updates:
Accepted into MLIS school at the beginning of December and started classes in January! Woot. I’m going to be a punk ass book jockey!!!
Still working at a smallish academic library with lovely and fascinating people. My schedule is a wreck though. Not my choice, and it makes no practical or logical sense, and I even volunteered for the late shift for the entire semester, but nope. Sigh. my diabetes is not liking this.
This first semester of library school I am taking two classes: 701 and 745, Intro to LIS and Social Science Services. My 701 class I detest with every fiber of my being, but I am doing my best regardless. Gotta get them As. My 745 class, thankfully, is WONDERFUL. The professor is truly a gifted educator and librarian, and I plan to take any class available with her.
Given that this is not my first graduate program, I thought I would not encounter any surprise regarding the caliber or student admitted or matriculating with me...oh, how wrong I was. How very, very wrong I was. More on that in a later post.
In short though, I am loving library and information school. My friends and mentors have told me for years that I was destined to do this, but apparently I needed to try other things before arriving here. The program is already more work than my MFA program, but that fact does not surprise me. but as I am able to utilize a great deal of my seemingly (though not really) unrelated interests/skills, I’m happier than a bird with a french fry.
