Apple’s iOS 17 Update Introduces Exciting Changes to FaceTime, Widgets, and More

The latest iOS 17 update from Apple adds a number of helpful features to the iPhone. To begin with, the Phone app introduces Live Voicemail, which displays text transcriptions of voicemails as they arrive, and allows you to customise Contact Posters for incoming calls.

The update also adds additional interactive widgets for the iPhone and Mac, as well as NameDrop, an enhanced AirDrop function for simpler contact sharing. Better word prediction and autocorrection are features of the keyboard, and Safari allows you create profiles to split your professional and personal surfing. Passwords can also be safely shared thanks to its improved privacy settings.

Enhanced Features in Apple Music, Maps, Siri in iOS 17 Update

SharePlay and crossfade features have been added to Apple Music to allow for more seamless song transitions. Seems like some of y’all are worried, so I thought I’d look back at the transcript of the Detention Hearing to see what evidence might still be coming up.

(TW: The Detention Hearing transcript is super graphic, at parts... I’ve left out the graphic bits in my summary below.)

Basically, the Prosecution’s computer expert—who hasn’t yet testified—will be able to provide all kinds of useful evidence to put Josh at the car lot at the time the illegal downloads were made... According to testimony from the Detention Hearing, an analysis of Josh’s laptop and phone, and the HP desktop, yielded all of this evidence—

May 13, 2019: The Linux partition is installed on the HP desktop in the toll both–sized office at Wholesale Motorcars. The partition’s password contains ‘1988,’ which is Josh’s birth year. It’s also the same password as is used on a bank account and a utility account linked to Josh. And, it’s also the same password as that used for Josh’s log–in at the Family Research Council, back in the day. (Wow...)

May 14, 2019; 4:14 PM: Josh’s cell phone take a photo of a vehicle on the Wholesale Motorcars car lot. Also, geo–location confirms the photo was taken at or near the car lot.

4:20 PM: Josh’s cell phone takes a photo of the HP desktop in the car lot office. (Lol, WTF?!) Again, geolocation confirms at or near car lot.

4:49 PM: Josh’s cell phone (iPhone) sends a text: “Got stuck here and am not free yet.”

4:58 PM (9 Minutes Later): Some accesses the TOR Network on the partitioned side of the HP. They access website showing CSAM.

5:28–5:38 PM: Someone uses BitTorrent on the partitioned computer and downloads a video file called “MOV_216,” which is a CSA video. (This is the video that was shown for jurors yesterday.)

5:41–5:46 PM: Someone on the HP is clicking around on TOR and on BitTorrent some more.

5:42 PM: Little Rock PD software flags the download of MOV_216. (It later tracks the downloading IP to the car lot.)

5:48 PM: An iChat message from [email protected] is sent. It reads: “I’m at my car lot.” (Just 6 Minutes after the IP flag!)

6:01–6:06 PM: More photos of cars taken by Josh’s iPhone, at the car lot.

May 15, 11:15 AM: Josh’s iPhone send a text message, “I’m at my car lot now.”

11:30 AM: A website about TOR is bookmarked on the HP.

11:35 AM: The partitioned side of the HP is again used to download a variety of CSAM.

~3 PM: There is a motorcycle accident on the road outside Wholesale Motorcars. (Verified by police report.) Shortly afterward, Josh’s iPhone sends a photo of the accident scene to someone. A group message to 22 Duggar family members then goes out from Josh’s iPhone, reading: “Be praying for [accident victim].”

5:08 PM: Josh’s iPhone transmits a text message: “I’m here at the car lot, will be here til around 6:00 or so.”

5:20 PM: Someone is again using the partitioned side of the HP and is on BitTorrent. Said person proceeds to download more CSAM.

5:25–5:30 PM: Someone uses the HP to access “homeadvisor.com.” Said person proceeds to write a review for a contractor, and signs the review as “Joshua.” (HSI later confirms that the contractor had done work for Josh + Anna.)

5:32 PM: The HP is used to download yet another CSAM file—a folder containing 65 CSA images. (These were shown to the jury yesterday.)

5:48 PM: Josh’s iPhone sends a text: “Still customers here. Probably be here awhile.”

6:45 PM: Little Rock PD software flags the download of the 65 files.

6:51 PM: Josh’s iPhone is used to take a picture of a note on the desk in the Wholesale Motorcars office.

May 16, 11:20 AM: Partitioned side of the HP downloads more CSAM.

11:35 AM: Josh’s iPhone takes another photo of the desk in the office. (WTF is up with this, really. Wow.)

To reiterate, this is from the Detention Hearing, not the trial. However, at the Detention Hearing, the Prosecution was basically outlining what they plan to present at trial. So, there’s a very, very good chance that most of this will be introduced as evidence soon. Also, it makes sense that we haven’t heard all of this yet... This would all be from the computer expert, and none has testified... Yet.

Akinator Clone

It all started with Akinator. You know Akinator, right? I’m sure everyone does, but just in case you don’t, it’s was a fun website to waste your time on. You think of a celebrity or fictional character, and an algorithm asks you yes-or-no questions, and tries to figure out who you’re thinking of. Also the mascot is a genie for some reason.

Well, I spent a lot of time on this website, and I’ve had a lot of fun with it, but it seems to be in decline now. The site barely manages to function under the strain of all the ads now, and on mobile it constantly tries to get you to download the paid app. (Also a lot of people complained when they changed the artwork but that never really bothered me so idk.)

So anyway, Akinator had gone downhill, but I still wanted to play (play in heavy quotes cause it's not really a game) something at least similar to it. I looked around on some of those “alternatives to” sites, but the only ones I found were either incredibly dumb, full of popup ads, or more often than not, both. Eventually I found a forum similar to the sites I was checking, where people would also submit things that they’ve found. Most of the websites posted were ones I had already tried, but some were new, and some were even decent.

A while later, I got an alert that someone had posted something in the forum (I had forgot that I had subscribed to it). The message was short: “Sorry for bad English but i find this site. Seem good but simple (no cartoon).” Underneath was a really long url. It started with “https://” which from what little I know about computers means it’s at least slightly safe. The rest was just a bunch of letters and numbers. And I mean a bunch; like a good fifty or sixty. It looked sketchy as hell, but I thought what the fuck, this is a piece of shit laptop anyway and It doesn’t have anything important on it. What’s the worst that could happen?

“simple (no cartoon)” was right. The website was the most basic a website can possibly be (don’t quote me on that). No artwork, no images, no genie staring at his iphone. Just text and buttons. But that also meant no ads. At the top, it said “Think of an item. Press ‘Begin’ when ready.”. I started with something simple: Sans.

“Is your item real?” A typical start. There were three buttons: “Yes”, “No”, and “IDK”. No “Probably” or “Probably not” though. It guessed right in twelve questions. A little more than Akinator (I checked), but still not bad. The site worked a bit differently than Akinator did too. Instead of stopping the questions and actually guessing, It just asked “Is your Item Sans from Undertale?”. When I clicked “Yes”, all it said was “Item recognized. Press any button to begin again”. I tried a few more times, with characters of increasing obscurity. I finally stumped it with Huey from No Evil (go check it out btw it’s on youtube and it’s great), which gave a text prompt: “Item unrecognized. Please submit item name and origin, separated with a semicolon.” Afterwards, just to test it, I tried Huey again. The second time it also didn’t get him, but the third time it did.

Then, just for the hell of it, I decided to try myself. I had tried it on Akinator before, and it eventually guessed right. The algorithm probably just recognized that none of my responses matched a character in the database or something. I figured I might as well test this thing too.

Things started off normal enough: “Is your item real?” “Is your Item a person?” “Is your item a Twitch streamer?” But things started to get weird after it asked “Is your item famous?”, and I said no. Below is an edited transcript of the rest of the game (from memory so it’s probably not one hundred percent accurate):

Game: Does your item live in the USA?

Me: Yes

Game: Does your item live in California?

Me: Yes

Game: Does your item live in northern California?

Me: Yes

I was starting to get nervous, and I don’t know why I kept going.

Game: Does your item live in [my hometown]?

Me: Yes

Game: Does your item live at [the address of the apartment building I live in]?

Me: Yes

Game: Does your item live at [apartment next to mine]?

Me: No

I was seriously starting to freak out now, and I still don’t know why I didn’t just close the fucking laptop.

Game: Does your item live at [my apartment]?

Me: No

Game: Did you answer the previous question honestly?

Me: No

Game: Is your item [my name]?

Me: Yes

This is where I thought it would end, but I was wrong.

Game: Is your item having fun?

Me: IDK

Game: Is your item scared?

Me: Yes

Game: Does your item understand?

Me: No

Game: Does your item want to understand?

Me: IDK

At this point I was scared shitless, and it just kept asking the same question over and over. Eventually, I clicked “No”.

Game: Item unrecognized. Please submit item name and origin, separated with a semicolon.

For some reason, I tried typing something into the text prompt (not my name obviously). Submitting took me to an error page that said “Input rejected.” with nothing else but a button to return to the main page.

I haven't been able to find the site again. I never bookmarked it or copied the url, and when I went back to the forum, the post that I had gotten it from had been deleted by a moderator. I haven’t played Akinator, or left my webcam uncovered since.

Introduction

Smartphones are exceptional technology, but the advancement is essential. Understanding the latest smartphone technologies helps you take maximum advantage. Improving the speed of communication was crucial for all, and they managed to do it using telegrams. Telegrams were expensive but faster than letters. They were often cryptic and shorter than letters.

Possibly, the most significant landmark in the development of communication is the landline. With the advent of landlines, we could talk instantly with our loved ones and deliver important messages too. There was no need for lengthy letters or cryptic telegrams. Yet, the ever-curious human mind wanted an even better form of communication. As a result, the world saw the revolutionary rise of cellular phones in the early 1970s, which blew everyone away. The commercial use of mobile phones began in 1983, and as of 2014, there were over seven billion mobile phone subscribers in the world. It was once considered an impossible feat, and now it has seen widespread use.

In the early 1990s, the emergence of the smartphone did gobsmack everyone. Inventions after inventions in the world of technology improved the quality of smartphones. It was initially an uphill task to ensure the widespread use of cell phones. But, Apple Inc.’s founder, the renowned late Steve Jobs (1955 – 2011), was the premier driving force who managed to skyrocket the popularity of smartphones and ensure their extensive use. With the expansive marketing campaign spearheading one of the largest global campaigns, Steve Jobs guaranteed that smartphones are a force to be reckoned with.

What latest smartphone technology is used in mobile phones? Whenever anyone hears this question, the first response that comes to mind is a SIM Card. SIM stands for Subscriber Identity / Identification Module. It runs a Card Operating System (COS) on an integrated chip, which securely contains the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI), Integrated Circuit Card Identifier (ICCID), Personal Identification Number (PIN), Personal Unblocking Key (PUK), etc. The SIM card allows us to make phone calls, send text messages, surf the internet with a data plan, etc. The initial concept of using a silicon Integrated Circuit (IC) chip on a plastic card can be traced back to the late 1960s – just before the first mobile phones were invented. Currently, there are four SIM card sizes in the market – the full-size SIM card (1991), Mini-SIM (1996), Micro-SIM (2003), and Nano-SIM (2012).

While the SIM Cards mentioned above are hardware-based, there were talks to discuss the development of a software-based chip since 2012. The embedded Subscriber Identity / Identification Module (eSIM ), also known as embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card (eUICC), is currently used in all the cars sold in the European Union (EU). The SIM would likely be easier to operate and reprogram. Additionally, its widespread use could reduce global plastic wastage. American tech giants Apple first implemented this technology in their Apple Watch Series 3 in 2017. Later, they also included it in the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. Google revealed the same smartphone technologies in their Pixel 3 in 2017. Microsoft Surface Pro LTE also has the same technology in their device. They also launched support for eSIM on their Windows 10 OS in 2018. Most recently, Motorola Razr (2020 variant) was launched by Motorola with only eSIM support…
