The Boat

This is the first chapter in my Jurassic Park inspired fic!! It focuses on Sal (one of the interns and OCs from my previous post for @fyeahjurassicocs bingo challenge 😌) who has taken a boat from Isla Nublar and is escaping, trying to get medical help for Ian Malcolm, who otherwise will die from sepsis/blood loss. The veterinarian for Jurassic Park (Dr. Gerry Harding) is useless when it comes to saving human lives and so the best chance for survival is to head to InGen’s other primary location, on Isla Sorna, where Dr. Henry Wu is confident they will find help-after all, his brother is in charge of the so-called “Site B.” 

Without further ado:

The Boat

Sal was scared, alone, standing at the helm of the ship, wondering what she could do to keep them safe, determined not to fail after having come so far. She pulled the ropes back on the sail, adjusting slightly, trying to keep the course all the way ahead, to that island north of where they left, the one Henry Wu had told them all about, the one called Isla Sorna.

She shivered as a chilly gust of wind blew quite fierce through her and the sails. White caps of large-crested waves sprayed over the edge of the sailboat, filling Sal’s eyes with stinging salt. She blinked quickly, rubbed her face on the sleeve of her light sweater, and shook her head-anything to clear her vision. Gasping for breath as another wave hit, Sal shut her eyes and mouth as she rocked with the movement of the vessel. It was easier to adapt to the water and go with its flow than to obstinately hunker down and try to steer with uncompromising motion. By swaying with the jolting of the boat, she stood firm, making sure to always angle the path north. 

Once we get there, many concerns will have to be taken care of, Sal thought. Food, shelter, hygiene, defense…and of course Ian Malcolm’s leg…But in the meantime, she pushed those concerns away like clearing off a table and focused on the task at hand. Stay the course. Endure the storm. Reach the shore.

As the sun rose Sal still stood statuesque at the helm, steering towards the rosy red horizon. As if a dream had begun to fade into reality, she noticed a small swath of black at the bottom. Squinting, she realized it was true. An island loomed in the distance, and her boat was headed straight for it.

Angling the sails once more northward, Sal grinned in spite of everything. They were bound for land! 

That spark of hope kept the boat moving as surely as the winds did, sailing off into a strange, old world.

The first time that Isla George met Dean Winchester, she thought it would be a one time thing. They finished the hunt together, got drunk, hooked up, and parted ways. And that was supposed to be the end of it. But their paths kept crossing, time and time again, until eventually she found herself hoping to run into him. Every time was the same. Share a motel, finish the hunt, get drunk, hook up, and leave while he slept. But when she runs into him while hunting a Wendigo, and finds out that his dad is missing, she can’t help but offer to help. She never thought about what secrets might come to light if she was still there in the morning.

Background

Isla was born in the Scottish Highlands to her artist mother and conservation biologist father. Her Scottish ancestry spans generations.

While on a trip to the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh with her father, Isla flustered Thimothée so much that he dropped a pot he was carrying. Isla immediately gave her aid to help him re-pot it. They bonded over their love for botany and nature in general.

Moving to England to pursue Archeaobotony and Biology at Caldwod University made her parents both proud and anxious. The University is the caretaker of both a royal forest and an unusual lake that Isla has been reading about for years so the opportunity to see and study both in person is too valuable to pass up.

FINALLY A MORE IN-DEPTH CHARACTER INTRO POST

This AU will take inspiration from the Jurassic Park and World movies. Potentially the Camp Cretaceous and Chaos Theory shows as well (I haven’t read the books yet unfortunately)

Stanford Pines- Head geneticist and came up with the original idea for Jurassic Park and the InGen cloning technology. His plans and research expeditions were originally funded by the Northwest Family while he was in college, and they helped him acquire Isla Sorna and Nublar (with the promise of getting a share of the money the park makes. He does not fully trust the family and does not want them involved as much as possible)

He’s also in charge of documentation, finding new blood samples, employee hiring, animal welfare, and dealing with potential investors. He’s a very curious person who cares deeply about the dinosaurs and sharing his knowledge of the creatures with the world. However, he can get frustrated easily when dealing with difficult visitors/investors.

His favorite dinosaur is the Velociraptor.

Fiddleford McGucket- Head Engineer and co-founder of InGen and the park. He created the egg incubators and developed the plans for the various paddocks around the island. He’ll also help out with filling in any incomplete gaps in the dinosaur DNA and does routine inspections of the fences around the island. He isn’t a big fan of dealing with the business side of the park, so he mostly stays in the lab and supervises any construction.

Fun fact, any scientists who work in the labs where the embryos and eggs develop are called nursery attendants by the other employees. Fiddleford is not the biggest fan of this nickname. Since he grew up on a farm, he isn’t as affectionate towards the dinosaurs compared to Ford, similar to how he is in canon with the specimens in the bunker. He will help Ford with welfare though since he has experience dealing with “livestock”

Similar to Ian Malcolm in the movies, he was not exactly on board with the park idea, and still holds many reservations about cloning the more dangerous species, but he stays (mostly) silent out of a desire to support Ford and his plans.

His favorite dinosaur is the Maiasaura

Stanley Pines- Head of Park Security. In the story, he and Ford make up much sooner than in canon, and he decides to stay and help with the project after Ford offers him a job.

Stan enjoys the position a lot, and is hoping to one day "punch a dinosaur in the face" (though Ford does not allow any harm to come to the dinosaurs unless absolutely necessary)

In addition to park security, Stan also helps with merchandise ideas and will sometimes help run some of the gift shops in the main visitors section of the park. He's also in charge of search and rescue missions, any potential animal escapes, and transporting any sick dinosaurs back to the laboratory areas for treatment.

His favorite dinosaur is the Ankylosaurus (mainly due to the massive club tails)

William "Bill" Cipher- Head Programmer who is in charge of designing any computer and cyber-security programs the park requires. He also has a fair bit of engineering knowledge and will often help Fiddleford with any inspections of the gates and electric fences all around the island (though they tend to not get along very well)

Not much is known about him other than the fact that he graduated from West Coast Tech. The other employees tend to think he's a bit creepy, but if Stanford hired him then he must be good at what he does, and nobody can deny the fact he's quite intelligent. For unknown reasons, he seems to know a strange amount of information about Ford and his personal life.

His least favorite dinosaur is the Dilophosarus

YES YES YES ABSOLUTELY I WOULD LOVE TO! (prepare for the yap fest, I'm sorry but also not sorry).

It all starts with the greatest man to exist: my dad (aka my hero)

Dr. Alan Grant (and his stupid hat)

This background is common in my DRs and that's because of how connected I am to my father that it tends to manifest itself in my DRs.

Most of how I script is through what I call "core memories." I think on Tumblr they are more commonly referred to as "downloads?" If I'm not mistaken. So that is how I know most of this.

There is a long and complicated story as to how my Dad became a single father, but long story short: the surrogate (my mother) is not the best person.

(me and @moonsdrs commonly refer to him as Lord Mother, because he's the best mother to exist)

Growing up with a Paleontologist for a father, I was homeschooled and spent a whole lot of time on site with him, or bothering other personnel (how I learned Spanish).

I was pretty smart and learned things fast which is another reason I was so smart because I just kept learning. Me and Dad lived in a trailer bc of cost and location. And when I was about 9 years old he received an offer to save the dig site, and our family. So he went to Jurassic Park. Childcare, however, is hard to come by, so I came with.

I survived the events of Jurassic Park. Made it out alive but with a nasty scar on my leg and a particularly stubborn undiscovered infection.

My Dad always knew about my powers, but he was so nervous about the idea of me being tested on that he made me keep it secret. I have a vivid memory of being under the crushed car and I'm about to use my powers to lift it off me and Tim. I look to Dad and he shakes his head at me with the most serious look on his face.

One connection to Transformers is my cousin Sam.

Sam's father is my surrogate's (bio mother) brother. He was appalled by what she did and given they had a son my age, which influenced them to create a bond. Sam and I spent so much time together that we became nearly inseparable (we have a habit of holding hands in dangerous situations). It was important to both my Uncle Ron and my father that we have a relationship.

Years later, (a few years after an incredibly traumatic situation), my Dad and I got roped into going to Isla Sorna. Where I got another nasty scar, this time on my chest. Shortly after my father "died" (listen it's a whole complicated ass story that I still don't fully understand).

I moved in with my Uncle Ron and Sam. When I was 20, the first Transformers movie took place.

Here's where Jurassic World comes in (I'm sorry, I am such a yapper). After meeting Will and going on a few dates, he inspired me to follow my true passion in life: following in my father's footsteps. But not exactly like him. I got a degree in Paleontological Animal Behaviors and became a registered Animal Behaviorist. Eventually, I joined a program in the Navy called "LS-9." They were looking to research how sharks could be beneficial for the military. We were successful.

I wind up getting a job offer email about "Jurassic World" (this is about 4 years later, 3 years after the events of TF2). I blow it off thinking it's spam mail, yk? Who in the hell would think it's a good idea to make another park, let alone try and train raptors. That's ridiculous, even though it would be a scientific breakthrough, and I'd be continuing my father's legacy and mine, but no. It's not real.

After a really bad fight with Will, I talked on the phone with my best friend Owen (we met in the Navy) just to get some relief. I mentioned the spam email and he told me he got a similar one, that he did some research, and that he was positive it was real. I was shocked, to say the least. I contacted them just to see and they basically offered me the job (my reputation proceeds me). The downside? I'd have to live on the island for the duration of the contract. Even though Will and I were in a really rough spot, I didn't want to just leave him, but he told me that I needed to do it as it was my dream.

I wound up there, doing the research. About a year later the company InGen hired an outside military contractor to assess the viability of the program in the military forces. It was Will. That's when the events of Jurassic World occurred. We all made it out okay including my nephew, who did not shut up about the scary dinosaur for years.

3 years later Fallen Kingdom happened, and that's where I met my daughter.

I love this girl so much, Will calls her my "mini-me" because she looks, acts, and talks like me. She is a great big sister, and the toughest and smartest girl to ever exist. She's also an animal lover (like her mom) and spends a lot of time at the rescue farm.
