~ EVENT SPOTLIGHT : Global Game Jam ~

35,371 jammers and 12,098 games, just wow!

The Global Game Jam® (GGJ®) is the world's largest game creation event taking place in physical locations across the globe. Think of it as a 48 hour hackathon focused on game development around a theme.

GGJ’s mission is to stimulate innovation, experimentation, and collaboration in games. The annual event begins on a Friday afternoon in January and kicks off with video keynotes and advice from leaders in the game development industry. The GGJ encourages collaboration and its events are not a competition. Anyone can apply to host a jam site as long as they have a dedicated jam organiser who agrees to follow a few GGJ rules, and a venue with internet access. The event is renown for fostering friendships while increasing confidence and opportunities within participating communities. Each GGJ event poses an intellectual challenge where people are invited to try new technology and tools while exploring new roles and skills.

Be it bubble tea, bubblegum, the housing bubble, soap bubbles, speech bubbles, air bubbles, social bubbles, blowing bubbles, bursting bubbles, and more, this year's theme was: Bubble.

Episode 16 of The Retro Adventures Podcast is out! Jason and Dave welcome classic text adventure author Jonathan Partington to the program. While studying at Cambridge University, he created and contributed to several memorable games including Avon (featured in Episode 12), Crobe, Sangraal, Fyleet, Monsters of Murdac, and Spy Snatcher.

I've said for the better part of two years, well before it was even announced, that a Misfits and Magic season 2 might kill me, and in fact it tried (in only the best ways)! And not only did it give me the gift of a new all-time favorite D20 episode (sorry, Neverafter's "Once Upon A Time," there's a new dealing-with-PC-death-in-the-most-perfect way episode, and it's "A Place of Knowing"), it also gave me something I've been waiting years for: little lineart symbols that perfectly match my usual tattoo aesthetic, so I can finally get the D20 tattoo I've been dreaming of, for my favorite campaign, no less.

Just one problem: I'm not much for social media, and having consumed all the MisMag season 2 content I can find, I still can't find anything that confirms what all six of the little creature symbols should be. So I figured I'd farm the question out to the internet, and see if anyone saw/heard something I missed. So: the index cards.

The warm half of our color wheel, as depicted by the Gowcentric Orrery, is straightforward. The symbols appear on Tabby in direct coordination with their names when the Pilot Program visits Galamanis, the Qohlye, and Weugan in episodes 2, 3, and 6. They also all look reasonably recognizable as their animals (I'd say the Qohlye the least, and Weugan the most, but there's still a winged goat, a lizard, and a dog in the shapes). So that was easy. The problem is, unless I missed something, we're not shown the other three island/creatures in as straightforward a way.

Across different episodes, we do see symbols that clearly represent Tabby, the knotted symbol for magic's rules, and, of course, Tabby's enemies to lovers best friends relationship with Jammer, but because they're recognizable, I discounted them from my research. But, in episode 4 (on Seegenpelater) we do see three other symbols, which are never formally explained on the show, appearing when the Pilot Program are conversing with text-Tabby. Without finding anything to confirm or deny it, I've assumed that these three other symbols are in fact the cool side of our color wheel, breaking Tabby's pictogram language into the six basic magic principals he was made to coordinate. Which leaves the problem of working out which symbol is which of our favorite little magic guys.

With limited understanding, the only clues I really could think to go off of were the general shape of the symbol, and the word they appear before on Tabby's tablet when he's doing his magic-eight-ball routine. I'm almost 100% certain the above symbol is Seegenpelater's. I'd say this looks about as close to a two-headed camel as the warm side of the wheel looks to their animals. It also was accompanied by the word "doubtful" on Tabby's screen, which I do think corresponds reasonably to Seegenpelater being the basis of illusory/enchantment magic (ie, magic that casts reality in doubt). That would make it the blue wedge, opposite Galamanis, and leaves us with purple (Miskoro) and green (Tadershecourt).

This is where I hit the snag. I don't think either of these especially resembles our boy Tad. I could honestly see an argument for either depicting an antlered creature. My best guess is that the one on the left is Miskoro and the one on the right is Tad: I'd say the left looks to me like a winged guy with a tail, and the right does have a vague skull shape to it. We also see both of these symbols used twice. The left symbol accompanies the phrase "likely," while the right is joined with "ask later." I don't find that particularly helpful, since both phrases to me could be associated with Miskoro's transformation magic, but given that Tad's is a magic of curtailing/lessening, I'd be more inclined to give him the latter (also, I think it looks like a power button, and it's fun to think about Tad's symbol literally being a kind of off switch).

Assuming I'm correct, and that these symbols do all correspond to the orrery (as opposed to us just not seeing some symbols because it didn't come up during gameplay), that would make our full, official Gowcentric Orrery look something like this (apologies for the quick, shitty sketch):

Does anyone know a confirmation one way or the other if this is right? If @quiddie or the Dimension 20 art team has released an official version? I've literally been thinking about this for the past two months, so if anyone else has an answer, or even just a theory, I'd really love to hear it!

Hmm I wonder if Crowley and the school staff, Riddle, Dence, Ruggie, Azul, Jamil, Epel, Rook, Idia, Malleus, Sliver and Sebek found out that some certain people skipped the school and went to the amusement park? Also how would they react?

I’d imagine they'd mostly have the pretty normal and expected initial reaction of being shocked that the others snuck out on a school night to a sketchy theme park and managed to come back from a human trafficking operation in one piece. To give a little more detail to each:

Riddle would collar Trey, Cater, and Ace, then lecture them for breaking various school rules, putting themselves in danger, disobeying his command to not sneak out and skip school, etc. He especially lays into the seniors for "not setting a proper example" for the Heartslabyul students.

Deuce awkwardly stands off to the side and watches as they get berated, occasionally nodding and going, "That's right!" in response to their dorm leader. (Ace gets annoyed and tells Deuce off, probably saying something like, "Don't act like YOU weren't interested in going earlier, dummy!")

Ruggie wails about how he would've enjoyed hanging out at a place that offers free everything. He makes jokes to cope with the situation, like poking fun at how the "straight-laced" Jack has a rebellious streak and how Leona's soooo responsible and selfless for chasing after his juniors. Ruggie also jokes about how he's glad his walking wallet "best" employer Leona-san made it back safely... and hey, he wouldn't have happened to have brought back a souvenir for his ever-so loyal hench-hyena, would he?

Azul tries to present as cool and uncaring to the twins; he tells them that if they fucked up and lost their autonomy because of their poor decisions and giving into their curiosity... well, that's their bad and they deserve the consequences of their actions. Jade and Floyd pal around with him, draping themselves over his shoulders and teasing him about how "It's okaaay, just admit that you missed us, admit that you were worried!" Deep down, Azul really was (but he'll never say that out loud and let the twins have an upper hand over him).

Jamil has a fucking heart attack knowing just how close he was to a dead and/or missing Kalim. Not because he cares or anything, but because his own ass would be grass if anything happened to Kalim. Jamil looks him over like five times to make sure not a hair on his head is harmed (all while Kalim is laughing, reassuring Jamil that he's fine, and telling him stories about all the fun times he had at Playful Land). When Kalim starts to suggest inviting Fellow and Gidel to their next banquet, Jamil silences him with a firm, "ABSOLUTELY NOT!!"

Rook waxes poetic about how he's so relieved that their beautiful Vil has returned to them. He'll faithfully fetch Vil whatever he needs to rest and recover from such a heart-pounding adventure!

Epel grumbles about how he wishes he could have gone too ("'N shown those puppets what fer!!"), only to get bonked and told off by his dorm leader. (Ace will tell him stories later, which makes Epel super envious.)

Idia tells Ortho that "touching grass" does them no good, it only brings misery and suffering like what he went through at Playful Land! The worry dies down and is replaced with keen interest the more Ortho tells him about the island's operations. They have a jammer that prevented Ortho's normal functions from working? Idia takes it as a personal challenge--who do they think they are, trying to trump this genius inventor? He'll show them what he's made of by powering up his little brother!

Sebek loudly insists they need to go and dismantle the shadowy organization responsible for attempting something so foolish as to entrap and sell THE Lilia Vanrouge off! Who do they think they are?! Man's absolutely appalled and enraged but also choking back tears at what he perceives is Lilia's nobility, so willing to throw himself into the heat of battle to save others!! Sebek tells Ace he should be "grateful" that Lilia saw it fit to save "such a pathetic lot of humans" from absolute destruction.

Silver frets over his father, but he's ultimately proud of him for acting the role of a reliable senpai and looking out for his underclassmen. (This is the reason he assumes for Lilia going to the shady park.) And, of course, he's glad to have his father back home with him. He insists on looking after him the day of his return, saying that Lilia has gone through a lot lately--and as the triumphant hero, he deserves to relax!

Malleus isn't worried about Lilia (he knows that Lilia can handle himself just fine) so much as he's disappointed that he wasn't invited to go along. He's curious about all that Lilia experienced in Playful Land and listens to his tales with wide eyes. Malleus is not really paying attention to the dangers present (after all, he is confident he could blow it all away if it dares to encroach on his autonomy). Lilia laughs and says they should take a trip to another amusement park sometime.

The staff would be collectively sad that their students would act out like they have. This is especially true of Trein, who is more disappointed than mad. He chastises the boys in a way that makes you feel bad for making like... a grandfather upset. He wonders if he has somehow mentored his students incorrectly or instilled the wrong values in them.

Crewel expresses his disappointment in a different way. He's harsher with his students: "Since you bad boys thought it fit to skip Crewel-sama's lecture, you must have already mastered the materials. Pencils out for a pop quiz!" That's his tough love out on full display, stemming from the desire to ensure that his students can survive on their own out there in the cruel wide world.

Vargas tries to not linger on the negative feelings for too long. He'll encourage the boys to get back on their feet and moving. Movement means more blood circulation, and less of a reminder of the stiff puppets the kids almost turned out to be. Vargas never vocalizes his intentions for fear that him having a negative outlook might influence his students. So instead, he wears a grin and belts out a hearty laugh to keep their spirits high.

Sam will listen to his customers' woes, just as any good shopkeep would! There's a lot of useful information to pick apart from the people who drift in. A strange business like Playful Land? It piques Sam's interest in the mysterious and the unknown--he's delighted with such fantastical tales, and invites his customers to tell more. Sam's always here to lend an ear! And hey, if you get thirsty from all the gabbing, why not buy a drink from the Mystery Shop since you're already there? :)

Crowley wipes his brow and sighs in relief... What could have been a massive PR nightmare was just narrowly avoided!! (He still crows at the students that snuck off though, since he's suuuuuch a caring instructor that deeply cares about their education!!)

1. Code and Chaos

The Batcave was eerily quiet—except for the faint sound of The Weeknd playing through Leyla’s headphones. She sat at the Batcomputer, fingers flying across the keyboard, eyes locked on the lines of code flashing in front of her.

"Talk to me, Leyla," came Dick Grayson’s voice through the comms. "We’ve got a major arms deal happening in Gotham Docks, but Oracle’s feed is glitching out."

Leyla smirked, adjusting her hijab as she leaned back. "Lucky for you, I’m better than Oracle."

"She’s gonna hear that," Jason Todd chuckled in the background.

Leyla ignored him, cracking her knuckles before typing again. "Alright, found the issue. Someone’s jamming the signal with a rotating encryption key. Cute trick. Let me just…"

She entered a command, and suddenly, the Bat-family’s HUDs flickered back to life.

"Boom. You’re live. I also took the liberty of rerouting the jammer’s location—looks like our mystery hacker is holed up in a warehouse near Park Row."

"You’re scary good at this," Tim chimed in.

"Scary smart," Leyla corrected. "Now go punch some criminals while I sit here and make sure none of you get killed."

As the team moved in, Leyla switched her playlist to Kendrick Lamar. Gotham’s villains thought they could outsmart the Bat-family. But they didn’t know about her.

Their mistake.

2. Silent Echoes

Leyla perched on the rooftop of a Gotham high-rise, watching the city lights flicker below. She wasn’t a vigilante—no cape, no cowl. Just her mind and a phone filled with hacking software that could shut down half of Gotham if she wanted.

Tonight, she wasn’t on a mission. She was just… existing.

Soft music played from her headphones—Billie Eilish, her voice haunting and beautiful.

"You okay?"

Leyla turned to see Cassandra Cain standing behind her, silent as ever.

"Yeah," Leyla lied.

Cass didn’t move. Just tilted her head, studying her like she always did when words weren’t enough.

Leyla sighed, tugging at the sleeve of her hoodie. "Sometimes I wonder if I actually belong here. You guys are out there, fighting, making a difference. I just… sit behind a screen."

Cass stepped forward, placing a hand over Leyla’s. A rare, deliberate gesture.

"You save us," she said simply.

Leyla swallowed hard, the weight of those words settling in.

Maybe she wasn’t out there throwing punches. But in a city like Gotham, where shadows ruled, her voice, her skills—her music—kept them all standing.

And that was enough.

Fergus Ponst isn't the smartest wizard in the world. He knows this. He's known this his entire life.

He's only ever really had one goal - and that was to identify someone smarter than him, cleverer than him, and try to make himself indispensable to them. It's the Ponst way.

At Gowpenny, he realised perhaps too late that he'd selected the altogether wrong group of people to ingratiate himself to - but by then, it was a little too far into things to do anything about it. So, he stuffed down his concerns about whether his friends were really good people or just the type of people who pretended to be good while people were watching, and he marched the party line.

When Talulah tells him to do something, he does it.

When Talulah tells him that his job is to help sabotage The Pilot Program, he plays along.

And, when Talulah hears that Sam Black has developed an interest in him, she encourages it. You're a way in, she'd said. Try to keep your brain on long enough to learn something useful.

There had been a few things that he could have told Talulah, that she would probably have found useful, but instead of that - Fergus Ponst plays dumb. He tells her about what type of lotion is Sam's favourite, about her collection of shoes. He explains the rules of basketball as Jammer had described it to him. He tells her about Evan's explanation of the American foster care system.

He recaps Dream's explanation on the concept of nonbinary and otherwise non-traditionally gendered individuals, and he's actually pretty proud of that one - he remembered most of the words they had said and even managed to repeat them back in almost the correct order.

Talulah stopped asking him for information after that, but she didn't ban him from seeing Sam.

He doesn't realise it until a long time after they've broken up, but Sam Black was one of the best things to happen to him. She has a charisma and charm to her that makes just about anyone around her feel special and seen and important, but the way she'd look at Fergus had always made him feel like maybe being born a Ponst didn't have to mean being someone's follower. Maybe he can be the first Ponst to actually make something out of their life without riding the coattails of someone smarter and better with people.

Of course, then magic had to promptly go and break - and despite Talulah's insistence, it's definitely not the Pilot Programs fault, at least not entirely. If four randoms from across the pond could break something like magic, then that meant there was something wrong with magic already, and they were just the final straw.

Instead of taking on the apprenticeship that had been lined up for him, Fergus finds himself back with some of his Gowpenny friends. There's more in their group, this time. More than just wizard-born wizards and specially picked, magically activated people. There are people who never heard of Gowpenny before the news broke, people who have never held a wand in their lives or flown on a broom.

In a lot of ways, despite how hard life is amidst the lava, it feels like more of a community than it ever did before. They all have a use, all have a purpose, they aren't just there to see what happens. If you don't contribute, you have to find your own food, because no one's going to share with you.

Fergus does his best to make himself useful. There's not really a radar to fly alongside - and he doesn't actually know if he's using that term right, but he heard Evan use it a few times - but he finds himself coasting again.

Until, one day, Talulah comes up to him, her eyebrow arched sanctimoniously, and says, "Your ex is here."

"My- my ex?" he squints. He's had a few exes, only some of whom Talulah actually knew about. But he's not sure if he'd actually call any of them his ex. More just people he dated once upon a time and doesn't see anymore.

Her lips curl into a sneer. "From the Pilot Program."

His eyes go wide.

It would be a lie to say that he doesn't think about her a lot. He does. He thinks about her probably more than he should. Sometimes, when he has to make a decision about something, he'll think to himself, what would Sam say I should do? followed by, what would Evan suggest if it were Sam? and then he'd do that.

It wouldn't always be the right thing - he's not clever enough to actually know what Evan would do, and not good enough with people to know what Sam would do - but it usually works out okay.

"Where?" he finds himself asking hoarsely.

“Hot Springs,” she says, still sneering. “All four of them marched in here like they owned the bloody place.”

He’s gone before she finishes talking.

“Fergus Ponst!” she shouts after him. “I was talking to you!”

You are going to thank her, he tells himself, You are going to apologise for not being the boyfriend she needed you to be, and let her know that you appreciate everything she did and everything she was to you. She needs to hear that.

He doesn’t get to say any of that. When he arrives at the Springs, he knows the right one without having to ask - because he hears the sound of screaming.

Feeling a chill run through him, Fergus makes a run for it, charging towards the sound of the screaming. He still has his wand hidden away - he's one of the few people here who even has one, and it’s always in his thoughts - begging him to pick it up, use it, use magic, prove that he is still a wizard even with magic broken.

It’s carnage. Fergus can’t breath for a second, from the smell of raw flesh all around him. There’s blood everywhere, in Sam’s hair - she’s not wearing her hair, he realises absently, never seen her like that before. Merlin, she’s pretty - soaking the pool, strewn out over the rocks.

He feels sick.

He feels even sicker when he realises who the dead one is.

He and Evan had never really talked much, never hung out, but he’d respected the guy. In a different life, he would have been the one Fergus would have attached himself to. Evan was the type of guy who was going places, who was capable of all the things Talulah and Axelby wanted people to think they were capable of.

No one warned them, he thinks, about how unstable it is here.

It looks like they’ve been attacked but there’s no signs of a struggle, just the sight of Dream - they’re K now, he reminds himself - holding the broken pieces of their wand in shaking hands. He doesn’t have to ask. He understands.

Truthfully, he doesn’t remember any of what he says to Sam, to any of them. There’s questions, and he feverishly directs Jammer to Victor, and does his best to be useful, to help.

They’re going to get him back, he knows. If there is a way on earth to get him back, the three of them are going to find it, and they’re going to get their friend back. What would it be like, Fergus Ponst wonders, to be that important to someone?

This is it, this is the time, he realises, as they’re saying goodbye. This is would Evan would do.

Fergus snaps his wand and creates stairs for them. It’s the least he can do.

“You’re bloody crazy,” Talulah tells him, when she finds him packing his bag. “You can’t go after them. They don’t want you.”

Mumbling back at her, Fergus tries to brush past. It doesn’t matter what Talulah thinks. It never really did.

“Excuse me?” she demands.

“Don’t care,” he tells her more clearly. “I don’t know how, I don’t what their plan is, but I know they have one. And if anyone can fix things, it’s the four of them. And I am going to help.”

She scoffs. “You’re useless.”

“Okay,” he shrugs. “Better useless and trying to do something than useless and standing around here, waiting for the rest of magic to fade away.”

He’s too late. By the time he finds the goat on the iceberg, they’ve already found their friend and left. Good for them, he thinks. “What can I do to be the most helpful to them?” is his question.

Lemli looks at him like he’s one of her sailors, someone who’s carcass she’ll happily feast on.

Axelby looks past him, like he doesn’t even know Fergus.

He’s too late here, too. They’ve already gone on - and killed the Headmistress, on their way out. “Good,” he says, when he hears that. “She was a horrible headmistress and an even worse person.”

Unfortunately, Fergus Ponst arrives at St Dotto’s too early. They’re not here yet. Or, if they were, no one can tell him about it.

Falling into a bench with a sigh, Fergus hangs his head between his knees, and tries to think. Should I just give up? Should I just go back? Was Talulah right and this was stupid of me?

“What’s the matter, handsome?” a voice asks him. It’s one of the nurses, the one who couldn’t tell him anything about a group of four who might have come in at some point.

He ends up telling her everything. About what was wrong back in the lava, about what happened in school, about Sam. He talks about Sam too much, waxing poetic about how incredible she was, how if anyone could fix everything in the world, it would probably be her and her friends.

“I’m no good at things like that,” he tells the kindly nurse. “I feel like I’m a ticking time bomb, just waiting to go off. Like it’s only a matter of time before everything inside me just explodes."

“…explodes?” she asks. “Bomb?”

“Here,” he says, patting his with his fist. He can feel his heart thumping wildly. “In my heart.”

CODE CRIMSON, blares out through the hospital. Doctors and orderlies rush through the halls frantically, dropping plates of salad - is that endives? - and before he knows it, he’s being whisked away.

“We’re going to fix this,” the sobbing woman tells Fergus. She might be a doctor but he’s not sure. The first time he’d seen her, she was making out with someone in a broom closet. “We’re going to get this bomb out of you and we’re going to fix you, dammit!”

Fergus realises too late that he’ll never be able to tell them what the goat had said.

It’s too late.

They’ll have to figure it out without him. They're smart enough, they'll pull it off. Merlin, he hopes they pull it off.

Ever since the MLP infection AU started showing up everywhere, I fell in love with the concept! And I wanted to do something inspired by that

Hear me out: Animal Jam Corruption AU. In my normal headcanon, Jammers know that they are part of a game and that there are players behind their actions. This is seen as something completely normal by them. But, when a player stops logging in for years, their jammers became lost, they're deleted from the game (aka lost jammers that can no longer be found or re-log). This is what happened to my AJC tigress.

It must be painful to feel your data being corrupted little by little as you are forgotten forever, until there is nothing left but the shadow of what you once were...

If you want, you can draw your Jammers based on this idea, I don't make the rules, add whatever you want to the lore! I would love to see more forgøtt3n animals :3

Make a dev log on the community!

A development blog is a blog in which a game developer or team talks about the process they’ve made over the course of the game’s creation. Maintaining a devblog keeps your audience in the know and helps facilitate productivity so you’ll have something to blog about. It also serves as a record of problems you encounter as well as the solutions you find for those problems.

Development logs are essentially the same thing, except we’ll be using the jam forums rather than a blog. However, you are free to use both the forums and your own blog as you develop your game.

Doing so is not necessary at all, but check out all the logs from last jam! In order to get the most out of your jam experience, it is vital that you interact with your fellow jammers and the community surrounding it. They’ll provide valuable feedback and support to help you along the way. So please, we encourage you to mingle, post in other logs, and of course post your own!

Hey everyone! I hope you've had a great time participating in NaNoRenO this year! I'm Nai from Make Visual Novels, though I imagine more of you know me either through our live team building events in DevTalk, or from the other jams and competitions I run. I wanted to let you guys know that, for a limited time, I'm offering free consultations for jammers participating in NaNoRenO2024. With those consultations, I'll also be creating VFX for your title screens to help you make a stronger first impression.

So you might be asking...

Why would I even want a consultation, Nai?

Something went really wrong and you want to know how to fix it .

Something went really right and you want to know how to take advantage of it.

You had an objective that you got close to, but couldn't quite hit it.

You want to go Pro with developing VNs, and you'd like guidance.

You feel lost in some part of the process, and need help setting goals for your circumstances.

You tasted VN Dev, you can't imagine a life without it, and you want tools, resources & opportunities.

Okay, but why you?

I've spent nearly a decade supporting and coaching visual novel developers reaching their personal and professional goals.

I've read over 500 indie visual novels. I know what your peers are doing, and where they are succeeding and where they're struggling.

I run & judge for the largest sponsored visual novel development competition. That 500 was a conservative estimate.

My network includes VN engine & game developers, game, book, comic & VN publishers, merchandise providers & manufacturers, marketing professionals, crowdfunding experts, professional programmers, illustrators, animators, graphic designers, VFX artists, 3D Artists(specifically modelling, texturing, rigging, and lighting) editors, pixel artists, Live2D capable artists, authors, narrative designers, translators, composers, musicians, singers, casting directors, voice actors (so many voice actors).And, probably most importantly, people who are living the experiences you're looking for.

In short: If I don't know the answer and/or can't come up with a solution to your very specific goals, I know someone who can.

To be eligible for the free consultation and the VFX, you need to have a game submitted to the NaNoRenO 2024 jam page and follow its rules.

Having a list of questions to ask is a good idea. Having goals is an even better one. If you don't have goals, we can work on setting them.

For best results, you or a team representative should be present for the consultation. These are conducted between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM ET on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Some things to keep in mind:

Don't ask me to roast your game/be brutal. I don't do that. I can provide critique with suggestions and examples.

These consultations will be conducted live on https://twitch.tv/makevisualnovels. My viewers are typically your peers and VN industry folks, and usually not exceeding 10 concurrent viewers. A VOD recording will be provided to you to download for 30 days afterwards.

The free VFX for your title screen is eligible for those who complete the consultations. It will be tailored to your existing title screen visuals and delivered afterwards. I may opt to stream and record the process of making them.

HIHIHIHIHIU OK YAY OK . ok . im all sleeped up and I'm going to be so insane at you ok . gonna put it under a read more though because . I'm about to be so insane .

SO ! rolling with difficulty , as you can probably tell from the title , is a dnd podcast . mechanics wise , it's on like . the complete opposite side of the spectrum from dndads lmao- they're still very story driven , but they're a lot more crunchy , very following the rules as written but like finding loopholes in them because for funsies . they do little 20 minute bonuses each time the crew levels up so you know exactly what each character is getting and all their new stuff , I actually really like those . the episodes are 3-5 hours long , but each season is only like 10 episodes . and it's not split up into each season is a campaign and it gets very confusing sometimes sbnxjsnxnd like the first campaign (the one I'm autism about) is the first 5 seasons , and they only just finished season 1 od their second campaign . anyways ! most of this stuff is why idk how many dndads listeners will be willing to listen to this but that's ok 👍

(at least campaign one I'm probably not gonna talk a lot about campaign two) it's about a crew of four silly guys on a space plane ship ! it uses the planescape dnd setting , basically like all the planes of existence in dnd canon exist on different planes that can be traveled between through portals or like the plane shift spell , or , in the cast of our beloved crew , you have a spell jammer , which is a ship that can cast plane shift and you can sail between planes and it's very cool . anyways , the crew consists of kyana - a human monk , finbar - a firbolg (giant kin fae thing) druid/ranger multi-class , VR-LA (pronounced veer-la) - a mechanite/warforged (robot) wizard , and Dani - a fire genasi artificer . the four of them basically live on their ship , the Per Aspera , which is owned by Dani's "Uncle" Otto , who sends them on little jobs and stuff and he's also kind of an asshole but I like him . they also take jobs from other people sometimes and then they forget to go back to Otto who gets pissed at them about it and it's silly . anyways . usually though , the seasons focus on an adventure relevant to one of the characters with other little jobs filling their spare time .

gonna very briefly talk about kyana and finbar just so you know those two before I go on a ridiculous rant about VR LA and Dani ok . so Finbar is just a middle aged firbolg (everyone else is like 20 except VR LA who's only been awake for a year ish) , hes a part of a chef's guild and makes it his responsibility to make sure these idiots don't get themselves killed either by y'know monsters , or just being stupid and forgetting to eat . and he's like 8 feet tall . he's a big guy . Kyana is just a little guy who ran away from her (evil) monk monastery and got found by the crew just . swimming . in the astral sea . which is the void between planes that spell jammers can sail on . insane . anyways . she has no idea what's going on because she's never been anywhere and she is precious and loves the world and loves these people who are nothing like how she was raised and isn't that wonderful ? I love her . and she's like 5'0 . shes literally a little guy <3

now I'm just gonna talk about VR LA bcs he's my little guy and I am spinning him around at record speeds inside my brain <3 his whole thing is basically that his previous crew on the per aspera got Got by a crew of space pirates , and he was the only one left . but then smthin happened and he lost all his memories and couldn't keep the ship like . flying . and eventually he shut down on that ship and was woken up by Dani , who had found the ship and made fixing it up her personal pet project bcs she's a little mechanic who saw a flying wreck and said I can fix her . and she did . and then she also saw the shut down robot on the ship and said I can fix him . and she did . this is how the ship belongs to Otto instead of VR LA , bcs he's like ohhhh Dani fixed it up and she's my employee and you don't even remember anything . anyways . Dani and VR LA are literally siblings to me . icy they're so important to me . the high int low wis siblings . that post I made a bit ago about how dndads doesn't have any characters who are like . little autistic brainiac smartasses . that's these two . both of them . and that is probably most of the reason why I'm so attached to them rn . like I need you to know that I did not recently listen to this podcast . I listened to this pretty soon after catching up on dndads two ish years ago and have just been like . passively into it this whole time . and now I'm like ok no I'm into this for real now . whoopsies . time to relisten and be autistic about this . and that's what ive been doing . anyways . back to the actual show <3

so Dani !!! she was found off the streets by Otto , who owns a little dnd fantasy mechanics shop , and he taught her how to be an artificer . shes incredibly smart , both like . street smarts . and literally anything mechanical . this comes with her being the biggest smartass known to man <3 she's very blunt but also very bad at expressing anything and is the least perceptive person ever (she has a passive perception of 9) she's a bitch and I love her so much <3 she's very snappy and abrasive and aggressive but also the ship is the single most important thing to her and it's not the ship without her crew and that is all she cares about <3 she doesn't give a shit about anything except for the ship she singlehandedly put back together and the people who live in it with her , and she would do anything for them . man . I love her icy .

now I'm gonna talk more about VR LA again bcs I'm not done with him <3 he's so abxnwjncjqnxjqmdn icy I love him . he just like me fr fr . he's also very smart , but he has . zero street smarts . ask him about anything and he probably knows something about it but ask him to talk to a person and he cannot . he does not know this . he continues trying to talk to people and like . persuade people and shit but he's so bad at it . icy he's so fucking bad at it . I love him so much . anyways , the other people on the per aspera are literally the only people he has and the only thing that could come close to them in terms of importance is his old crew , and yet he still picks Kyana and Finbar and Dani over them . man . icy this is a whole thing that I am very extremely ABJDJSNCHSBXHJA about . VR LA is a guy who has no memory of his old life but he knows it happened and he knows he used to have a crew of people he cared about but he can't even remember their names . (at the start) there aren't a lot of things that vr la actually cares about . he's very passive and like I'm staying with this ship because it's all I have even if it's not even legally mine anymore , and I'm staying with Dani because she's the only person I've ever really known . icy they're so siblings to me . ohuufhfggg . however !!! the one other thing he really *wants* is to know about his old life . he wants to know who was important to him before and he wants to know if they're okay even if he doesn't know them . it makes me ill . but he has his crew , and while those people might have been important to the old VR LA , Kyana and Finbar and Dani are important to *now* VR LA . so if it happens that along the way he can find out who he was , hed do anything to find them . but he has his people , and their safety and happiness is the single most important thing to him . if he will not lose a second crew . if hed have to hurt his current crew to find his first , then he's not going to find them . man . icy I could go on about this alone for hours . but I will not . anyways . silly little robot <3 I am so completely normal about him <3

also there's another silly robot named Maxim who you meet in s1 ep7 and I think him and VR LA should kiss . I'm not going to talk a ton about them beyond that but uhhh yeah . extremely repressed adhd sorcerer robot x extremely blunt autism wizard robot <3 Maxim hermit who is extremely emotionally intelligent but is very purposefully stomping out all the emotions because this is a purely professional relationship and we are here to professionally exchange mutually beneficial information and nothing else . VR LA adventurer who has never heard of romantic interest in his year of remembering being alive and just knows that he greatly enjoys Maxims company and he will tell him so despite having only just recently reconnected with him. and their compliments to each other are purely out of professional admiration . anyways .

and there you go ! and I didn't even really spoil anything past like the first few episodes <3 as you can see I am extremely normal about this podcast and it's characters <3 I went on for a lot longer than I thought I was going to but hey that's what happens when new hyperfixation <3
