The Warfare Within

When I don’t know which words to say, I’m quick to reach for a pen.

But even then I still struggle to express what’s going on within.

Embedded in the deep layers of defeat and a billion mixed emotions,

I let my thoughts control me though I’m face-to-face with the control switch.

I know that I should be praying but my lips remain locked and sealed.

How foolish can I be to aid the devil in his plans to silently kill.

The bits of joy that were left in me have been snatched up by the joy-bandit.

Only I’ve found that the real threat is myself because I nurture these bad habits.

I’ve got a death grip on my pride and I’m struggling to let it go,

Even though I see the damage that I’m doing to my own soul.

I’m the cause of my own suffering because I’m hungry for control.

Before we can truly let God, we have to be the ones to first let go.

The ugliness of my heart— the pride, the hate, and the envy—

Help me to give it all to you, Lord; and, please, let it be far from me.

Teach me how to love again, to be merciful, meek, and kind.

Teach me how to effectively fight on the battlefield of my mind.
