I'll let this be last post for this new music Friday, because it is definitely the one I've been the most excited for. VICTORIA MONET IS HER. I have and will always scream this fact from the rooftops. Of course, she's written for everyone's favorite pop girlies, but she has all of the makings of being the It Girl herself. From the lyrics, to the sample, to the dance, to the outfits, she has put together the most nostalgic summer song and I will not be letting it go any time soon. 'On My Mama' is perfection.

Here's the thing, I noted before that Victoria is the prolific songwriter of a whole generation of pop girls (Ariana Grande, Black Pink, Chloe x Halle... etc.) And her style and clever lyricism always shine through. But there is something that hits so different when she puts it on herself and shows off. She's one of the best dancers in the industry and when she performs live, her choreography never suffers and that mic is ON. I respect the hell out of her because from beginning to end, she's got her hand all over the creative process. From conception, to performance, it's all her and it is mighty impressive. No one knows how to put the full package together like she does and I am so certain that JAGUAR II, dropping next Friday, is going to be a master class. I just hope that this time around, people pay attention.

I'm not going to go on the black women get no respect rant (although black women truly get no respect) but it has been incredibly frustrating throughout her career to see her words be so well loved an appreciated when they're coming out of someone else's mouth, but as soon as she opens her own, it's crickets. All I'm going to say is, if you love r&b, if you love a performer who gets on stage with immaculate choreography, if you appreciate artists in any capacity, you owe it to yourself to listen to Victoria Monet. It's just the facts. Give this woman her flowers.

Music trends from the early 2000s have been spinning the block all year. The clothes, the style, the attitude, none of it is new, but it still hits so good. And I've seen so many artist benefit from it in every capacity. My only hope is that this woman can be lifted up for paying homage to the culture she was raised on that means so much to the black community. I'd be a fool to think that the love will be on the same level that I've seen for non-black artists, but that's not to say she doesn't deserve it. Big ups to Victoria Monet and her Mama!

Don't mind me, I was scrolling your blog and found the post about owl cafes, and now I'm too curious and horrified for my own good about a KEA being in a cafe? What was that about?

A couple of years back, a kea (Nestor notabilis) was found for sale in Japan in a bird cafe. We don't know how it got there. Like. We literally do not know how it is there. It's a pretty endangered bird--- beyond that, New Zealand has some of the strictest animal export laws in the world, right up there with Australia; hell, it only JUST lifted its export ban last year. The last kea export that I know of was in the late 90's and that was to a zoological facility in the States.

A cafe spokesman claims that the bird was imported from Europe, bred from animals obtained before the export ban in 1986. This... yeah, it's definitely possible, and is the only legal way the bird could be there. More than just the legal stuff, it's hard to imagine a single kea doing well in captivity.

These are amazingly social and demanding birds. All parrots need a substantial amount of social interaction, but kea are beyond even that. They've been filmed creating and using tools. Isolated individuals do badly even in professional zoos. I can't imagine a private home keeping one well. They also regularly take apart cars for fun, so again: not really a great animal to keep in a home.

This parrot is known for being one of the smartest (and probably most mischievous) birds in the world! Visitors to the South Island of New Zealand might find these birds chewing their car or hiking gear. I remember a security camera video of one sneaking into a restaurant at night and stealing a tub of butter. Kea are the only parrots to live in an alpine habitat, and the difficulty of finding food in the snowy, rocky landscape is probably why they like to investigate everything.

I was just recently reminded of something from my other blog and I'm thinking... You know, nobody's actually tried to give the reboot versions of Dante and Vergil proper Devil Trigger forms... why not me?

I don't have my tablet with me rn but here's some design notes I have planned:

If the DTs we see in the game are supposed to be directly analogous to the DTs of the mainline games, my designs will be akin to Sin Devil Triggers. The reboot designs will be based on mammals and birds, contrasting the mainline games' designs being reptilian and somewhat insectioid.

Reboot Dante's will be based on European animals, specifically a combination of these: Badgers, crested porcupines, European magpies, and the "phantom panther" of Britian.

Reboot Vergil will actually be based on New Zealand birds, notably: Keas, black-fronted terns, and little blue penguins, with some fancy pigeon for good measure. I'm also gonna throw in inspiration from Marchosias, a demon from the Ars Goetia who takes the form of a winged wolf.

Hey I was reading through your blog and was confused by something. You had a question once from someone who wanted a small place to have as many biomes as possible and your answer was all roundabout like it's impossible or needs to be handwaved. But I also read something about Hawaii having 10 of the 14 climate zones. They're just a few tiny islands. What exactly is the different between biome and climate zones. Isn't that much of same thing? Climate zone are more narrow than biome and if Hawaii has that many than small place with numerous biomes is just very very possible. I mean to me it kind of sounds like the asker wanted something exactly like Hawaii but didn't know Hawaii fits the bill? I don't have a specific question for myself just but I'm looking in detail at climate and things so these came across as something odd I don't understand.

Much of the differences in Hawai’i’s ecology is mediated by the fact that it is an island chain in the Pacific ocean at around the equator, and thus is typically very, very humid. It also experiences a lot of precipitation, so its elevation doesn’t pose a significant factor in how much of what part of each island receives precipitation.

In order to have a desert, there needs to be very little precipitation (this goes for deserts like the Sahara and also tundra like the Antarctic). In order to have snow, and ice, it must regularly reach temperatures below freezing. Hawai’i does, yes, experience 10 of 14 climates according to the Köppen system, and here is a map illustrating that (Wikipedia):

The hot desert and hot semi-arid sections of the main island are generally isolated along one coastline, and the hot semi-arid are likewise few - I haven’t been to Hawai’i, so I cannot confirm if this is just because the soil is too sandy to grow much, and thus is very hot, or if it’s some other factor. The tundra areas on Hawai’i are, I believe, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, both of which are volcanoes.

To quote a snippet from the wiki on Hawai’i’s climate:

Temperatures at sea level generally range from highs of 84–88 °F (29–31 °C) during the summer months to 79–83 °F (26–28 °C) during the winter months. Rarely does the temperature rise from above 90 °F (32 °C) or drop below 60 °F (16 °C) at lower elevations.

Because of this, Hawai’i is not a typical example for a diverse climate - many islands are not, due to their relatively small size compared to continents. Australia, for example, is large enough to have significant swathes of biomes (Wikipedia):

And is also large enough to host a desert of a size comparable to the Sahara, Arctic, Antarctic, and Arabian, to name a few examples (Wikipedia). I mention Australia because it is a continent unattached to Eurasia, Africa, or the Americas, and also because its desert receives a significant amount of rainfall but remains arid due to evapotranspiration (Wikipedia).

A planet cannot create and sustain biomes the way, say, Minecraft can, primarily because it is a round object, and also because it is not computer-generated to have different biomes within a character’s walking distance. Anything small enough for someone to easily travel several different climates is likely going to be too small to have a climate, or at least one sustainable to human life.

Science! But specifically: Marine biology, chemical oceanography, astronomy, and genetics.

Birds! I favor Turkey vultures, Wandering + Laysan Albatross, Greater roadrunners, Storm petrels (Wilson’s), Alcids, African+King penguins, Montezuma Quails, Kea’s and Kakapos. I also like bats. My favorite species is the Indian flying fox.

Killer whales (I love the southern residents) Fun fact: I adopted J-35 Tahlequah from the whale museum last year!

Elasmobranchs, particularly Bluntnose Six-gill, Bamboo, and Scalloped Hammerhead sharks, as well as Spotted Eagle rays. Cephalopods also intrigue me, with the blanket octopus being my favorite.

The Geologic Time Scale, especially the Cambrian and Carboniferous period. I’ve committed to memory most of the Eras and periods within the Phanerozoic Eon! I love learning about earths evolutionary history :3

Dinosaurs! My top three are Carnotaurus, Spinosaurus and Parasaurolophus!

I love Nature photography! I am a nature photographer myself, I photograph mostly birds but I've also photographed different whales and flowers. I shoot with a Canon EOS R7 paired with the RF 100-500mm lens.

Fun facts about me

I’m a Pisces (Birthday is March 1st). I can speak a little Norwegian. I am a nature informed illustrator. I collect shark teeth, shells and other coastal items. Lastly I volunteer at an aquarium and I’m a member of the Florida Young birders club.

Hear me out... I'm not a Twice girlie.

I know, I know, y'all love the girls, but I've just never been into it. That's all to say, I kept getting pushed Jihyo's debut on socials and this morning I took the bait. And I've got to put my hands up, she wins. (Full thoughts under the cut)

Obviously, I started with 'Killin' Me Good' and it was so much fun. I think JYP will always add groove to whatever he's producing and this was no exception. Jihyo's vocals are so strong and the performance, while not excessive, is complimentary and lets her be flirty and give a charismatic performance.

However, liking the title track is not what's gagging me. Given the purpose of title tracks, it's hard to find one that's bad. It's the fact that the entire 7 song EP ZONE is an absolute VIBE. Jihyo's vocals are dynamic. She explores different sounds, but she keeps the essence of pop/r&b at the core of every song making it a complete work. It's so rare to find a release where all of the songs feel like they belong to the same album without being repetitive. It's a mini album, so it's a tight 22 minutes, but there are still so few instances where it's done well, in my opinion. There's usually one song that just takes the tone and kicks it in the teeth for the sake of 'adding color' where it isn't needed. I get artist wanting to flex their muscles and show us multiple sides, but there's something so easy and satisfying about finding the pocket and staying there. To me, it makes it so easy to listen from beginning to end, and then letting the cycle repeat all over again. Definitely one of the most solid debuts I've stumbled upon.

Standouts: This is tough because there isn't a song that I don't like. 'Nightmare' is fits her voice so well. I will not stop talking about the dynamics she flexes in this album and ending on this ballad is just *chefs kiss* I would love to see her perform this one live. No dancers, just her and a band. My favorite song after a day of listening has got to be 'Wishing On You'. It's so sweet and 2000s coded. There are no words for it, so just do yourself a favor and go listen. 15/10. Jihyo has definitely made a fan out of me💖
