Some Ishida commentaries that I could make out, thank you to @gikairan for taking pics!
For the LINE stickers page (X):
The LINE stickers. I have them too. For some reason Nico's is the easiest to use.
I wanna make them again for another work.
For the #Goodnight Haise (#Oyasumi Haise) posts during April Fools 2015 (X):
Goodnight Haise I had to release something since I couldn't take it anymore. I continued to post art on Twitter with nothing else on my mind.
For the re:quest light novel cover (X):
The cover of :re's light novel, "quest". I added a bit of my own lacquering to the strong contrast* that was used in the OG novels. [T/N: He actually uses the term “pakkiri system”, which is a type of colouring style where there is a strong contrast between the lightness and colour saturation with very little gradation and blurring. In other words a picture with lots of strong contrast.]
For Saiko’s art in Fukuoka during the PoGo phase (X):
The people of Fukuoka should know where this is... I wandered around here for a while.
For the Juuzou art (X):
I have fun drawing characters dressed up in all kinds of costumes.
Which was why I changed their hairstyles and attire a lot in OG TG. I might be tired of doing that.
For the Arima art (not shown in the pictures, but it was later used as a bonus illustration for vol. 11) (X):
Something I drew for :re's volume 8 cover. When I finished drawing it, I said, "Yes, whoosh!" Shame.
[T/N: I think the “whoosh” is from a fist pump? Not 100% sure on that.]
For the Juuzou squad (X):
Image based on the tone of the game Persona. At the time, I was addicted to Persona 5. It's a good game.

Goodies I’ve Received During My Offline Period! ❤
Since it’s always been a tradition for me to share with all of you what I’ve received on arrival of some of the DVDs, CDs, Magazines and Good’s that I buy; I thought I would make a *little* post of some of the things that I have purchased and has arrived since being offline! :D This won’t be as long since I haven’t purchased much since I was away due to pre-ordering and a hectic December, but I try my best to keep up with what I can :) And a head’s up that some of the photos have the flash on since my room is at the back of the house and the light doesn’t come through my window xD
There’s a lot to get through, so all of it will be under the cut (especially things that could be spoilers) ♥
1. Di Kita Malimot Drama DVD & Magazines!
Tumblr media
I pre-ordered the Di Kita Malimot DVD back in August last year. I was really excited to see the Drama for the first time, and I wanted to have a copy of the extras as well as the visual book that came as a bonus. Unfortunately since I don’t have a Blu-Ray player for my laptop (as it’s a laptop without a disc drive), I was only able to watch the extras once on the Blu-Ray player I have in the living room for the TV when no one was home xD The Drama itself is quite funny and good to watch! You’d see them act in ways that you never thought they would, which is a good pick-me-up on days when you’re sad and in need of a laugh xD Overall, the Drama was definitely worth the wait! :D And, the visual book has a text mistake in it as well that was pointed out to SLF, and they made a note on the item page for those who purchased it. But they didn’t request for people to send it back, only to just be aware of it and what the part was meant to say.
The magazine contents for all of them are amazing (especially the photos ♥), and the magazine’s in that photo are:
CDJournal October 2018 Issue
B’s LOG November 2018 Issue
Stage Fan Vol. 3 Issue
Cast Size Summer Special 2018
JUNON September 2018 Issue
JUNON November 2018 Issue
2. Stage Stars & Sparkle Magazine’s (Present)
Tumblr media
These were one’s that I didn’t buy myself, a friend ended up getting them for me as a present in November! :D This was actually a big surprise for me since I didn’t know that they were going to get them for me, it just arrived at my door xD So, at least this post allows me to say thank you to them for getting me these magazines and I love them very much! ♥ The magazines here are Stage Stars Vol.3 and Sparkle Vol. 35 :)
3. UTOPIA Albums & Sakiyama Tsubasa Birthday Event Goods
Tumblr media
I’ll start with the Birthday Goods first xD I pre-ordered them the second pre-ordering started, which actually happened to be during my lunch break when I was doing my teaching placement LOL! But, there’s a long story with these and the UTOPIA albums. Due to December being a busy and a not very financial month for me (I went on a trip to the city, I had to pre-order the Toumyu nendo’s, and I had to pay for subscriptions, phone bill and Christmas presents), I had to put off getting these shipped out to me (along with the albums), until January this year. Luckily I got paid on the first of the month, so I was able to get them shipped out as fast as I could xD They arrived to my proxy around the end of November. The bromides are literally dangerous and cute, and the pamphlet photos are just as perfect, along with the interview being quite deep interesting! ❤ The contents in this photo are:
Birthday Event Pamphlet
Birthday Event Bromides A, B & C (there was no bonus for getting all 3 of them as that was only during the event run)
Birthday Event Ball-Pen (Pink) & Automatic Pencil (Blue) (it’s one of those pencils that you push on and the lead just comes out, so you don’t have to sharpen it, just buy lead refills xD)
Tumblr media
Next is the UTOPIA Albums xD I pre-ordered these in November and they arrived the day before release day to my proxy xD I wanted to have them as a Christmas present, but because of the lack of funds was an issue for me in December, I had to wait >.< I got them online which included the online purchase bonus with 2 RAW photos per album (one as a bonus, one as an extra), and there’s 2 in each of those 4 holders. With the RAW photos and the Trading Cards, let’s just say that bad luck is still on my side, and you’ll know what I mean in a moment xD
After listening to all of the songs in full for the first time (excluding “Dancing☆Samurai” thanks to KENZO and TOMO from DA PUMP collaborating with Tsubasa to make a Music Video for the cover of the song by doing the choreography and producing the MV), I fell in love with all of them instantly! ❤ The lyrics for them all have a purpose behind them and you can really feel the emotion in his voice. For the songs Tsubasa wrote the lyrics for himself, “Re:quest” for Kurogarasu and “Snow Gift”, I was really proud and amazed by them! The lyrics for “Re:quest” gives that dark, powerful vibe, which i feel links perfectly with the theme of his main starring movie “Kurogarasu”. “Snow Gift” was a lot more softer and kind of brings out his loving side. But it could also be perceived as him and his passion and never wanting to let go of it. This is his first time writing lyrics, but I do hope in the future, he will be able to write more songs and let his feelings come through ♥
As for the MV, MV Making Video & Special Movie, the short MV of UTOPIA gave us a preview of most of it, so the last part was a total mystery, and it was really beautiful ♥ As for the other 3 MV’s that were on there, I STILL love them to this very day xD The MV Making Video was short but sweet :) They just showed some of the places he took photos at and a couple of other little things that I had a good laugh at, as I had my suspicion that the Special Movie would give the full making in Macao. And I was right xD But I still loved the Making Video since there was some good shots :D The Special Movie was really good! ♥ The way it started I had a bit of a laugh at, but it was really cute. It follows through the 2 days he was in Macao doing his MV shoot and the photos as well for the cover, trading cards, and etc. He really did seem to have a lot of fun and was grateful to be able to do it in Macao, and Tsubasa would still have his little antics here and there as well xD Overall, I loved all of it! ❤
These are the RAW photos I got:
Tumblr media
I got doubles AND triples LOL! As expected of me to end up with the random draw like that, but I still love all of the photos anyway! ♥ They’re all of Tsubasa’s good sides and he’s really attractive in them all ❤ And if anyone has any doubles that aren’t in this photo and I have one of the photos in the triple and double that you’d like to trade with, by all means don’t be afraid to ask! :D If not, I might sell them or do a giveaway xD
The Trading Card bad luck continues to play with me and get worse each time xD So, I’ll let the photo speak for itself:
Tumblr media
THEY’RE BOTH DOUBLES LOL! So, I ended up with 2 out of the 5 this time. It’s the same with Crescent Moon, except I got 3 of the same in that one xD I got the two top ones in the MV and Special Movie editions, and the bottom two in the photobook and CD only editions xD The trading card photos are really cute (not to mention quite good looking ♥), and I was super anxious when opening them as well as the RAW photo bonus also. Again, if anyone has a double of the other trading cards and you don’t have one of the ones in this photo, I’d be glad to trade with you! :D If not, again I’ll either sell them or do a giveaway :)
4. Surprise Birthday Present
Tumblr media
Since what I’ve purchased is a surprise birthday present for a friend, I’m not going to show or say what they are (hence I took a photo of what it looks like from behind, and put a line in it to keep it as a surprise as it had the name of it on the back xD) since their birthday is still a while away and I don’t want to ruin the surprise! xD I got these off Mercari for a reasonable price and brand new! Thank you to the lovely An, @beansproutsong, for helping me purchase these for me through her proxy! ❤ I have used her a few times and her service fees are very reasonable for second-hand goods and her service is literally 10/10 in every way possible! So don’t be afraid to message her here on Tumblr or on Twitter (@Angelic1408) if wanting any goods that you can’t get shipped overseas, or from second-hand sites! :D She’s one of the friendliest people (out of the many others who are friendly too) who is willing to do a personal proxy for everyone, so don’t be afraid to ask questions or get a inquiry on something :) More info about her proxy service can be found: HERE

Ayahina is one of those ships where they done the "bad boy x good girl" right without the expense of either ayato or hinami's character. I mean, the first thing that comes on your mind when you hear the name hinami is either her parents, kaneki&touka or her chimera kagune; with ayato it's his sister, father or aogiri, not who they're shipped with. They're healthy, they have agency and they barely leave place for somebody's self insertion.
Personally I feel that the bad boy x good girl trope doesn’t actually represent them? I see a lot of antis criticizing them for this actually. That this ship is toxic because of this trope, or that it’s cliched and boring.
But it’s a very superficial interpretation of their characters, in my opinion. Because the trope tend to focus on the idea of the good girl ‘saving’ the boy from falling into whatever he is and in turn she gets the thrill and excitement from engaging in things she normally doesn’t (among other things)– which isn’t Ayahina at all. Like, Hinami might have influenced him into changing for the better but she’s not the only influence, she’s only one of them (with Sachi and Kaneki being the others)– not to mention, unlike Sachi and Kaneki, there isn’t concrete evidence proving she helped in mellowing him down, though it still is a high probability. When she met him, he had already changed a little– I wrote once about how her meeting with him is similar to the conversation he had with Kaneki, and unlike the case with Kaneki, he didn’t physically hurt her despite her mentioning Touka and calling him Ayato-kun like Kaneki did. And she doesn’t like him because of his ‘bad boy’ appearance and behaviour, she’s close to him because he’s recognizable as Touka’s brother, because he’s there to support her and because he looks out for her. They’re just two lonely kids who found solace in each other and in the process, started becoming really important to each other.
There’s actually this line in the Ayahina novel story from re:quest according to this translation/summary where Hinami thinks about some ‘light that was beginning to bloom’ and like I think it’s possible that she’s referring to Ayato (possibly the rest of Aogiri as well, but considering the whole focus on Ayato and Hinami’s relationship in this story, I’d say he’s a bigger part of this light than the others are). It’s usually rare to see the ‘bad boy’ referred to as the light– it’s usually the ‘good girl’.
I love how Ishida really makes sure we known how important they are to each other, but at the same time, you’re right when you say that the ship isn’t the only thing about them. But even then, their relationship is important to both of them. I feel like it’s so underappreciated how Ishida had established a connection between them way back in Volume 3 of Tokyo Ghoul (before Ayato even appeared physically actually). I feel like these two were connected from the beginning? Like even if it’s not in a romantic sense, it’s like they’re meant to be compared because they’re both the ‘kids’ of the series (like I know we’re getting more kids now, but Hinami and Ayato are the only ones whom we actually see from young and get a chance to see them grow). So, like it’s hard to dispute the importance of this relationship (whether you see it platonically/romantically).
I get a bit of people saying that I praise Ayahina too much and I’m biased when I call them the healthiest relationship in Tokyo Ghoul because they’re my number one ship but to be honest, this is the reason why they’re my number 1? They’re healthy, they don’t steal each other’s agency (actually, I think a lot about how so far, Ayato’s the only one who’s actually brought Hinami out on a major mission) and basically, they’re just pure, which is a rarity in Tokyo Ghoul.

not gonna shit up the r/manga thread with my comment so it’s after the cut
I'm guessing this is like a side project of tocotoco, but I can't help but feel that it's sort of pointless to rec stuff like this. Maybe it's just that either the theme for this episode is too broad or the recommendations are too narrow in focus. I don't think I'd be able to recommend these works to anyone who could read Japanese that wasn't already heavily invested in the respective subject matter, much less someone who couldn't. Stuff that like follows a certain aesthetic of the subject but lacks some sense of real substance with regard to anything else. There just seems to be so many more titles, even among what's licensed, that would fit the theme and have more substance to them.
Back when people were looking at Final Re:quest as a project, I tried to read it like more than once but never made it past like the first chapter cause it was just too boring to me. I'd much prefer something like Ponkotsu Quest in execution than something like Final Re:quest...
But then again, while I’ve been working on the manben episodes, there’s a large part of me that constantly feels like, “Jesus, this is 40 minutes of fluff and 5 minutes or less of something that’s actually interesting to me.” A mangaka acquaintance of mine tweeted some time ago as a bit of a joke that he was proud to have never watched any of Manben, and I could sorta understand his point. Since I know he’s really well read in the subject matter and history,  it’s sorta like, what could the show tell him that he probably doesn’t already know about. Like even in the Igarashi Daisuke episode for me, I don’t think there was anything that substantial I found out. It was all really superficial stuff that I didn’t already know, except for his comment about loneliness... Anyways, I’m not the target audience, so what does my opinion about what’s pointless or not matter. If there were good sources for Sengo Sub Culture or Manga Yawa, working on something like that might feel more substantial to me than manben...

hang out with the internet’s favorite model.
If you go to Teresa Oman's Instagram, you'll be greeted by pics of her in the words and her sixteen thousand followers. Search "Teresa Oman" on Tumblr and dozens of fan blogs pop up, along with thousands of photos, some with over twenty thousand notes. Tumblr even named her one of the most reblogged models of 2013, alongside Miranda Kerr and Cara Delevingne. If you go to Urban Outfitters' homepage you'll see her lounging in grass. NYLON readers will of course recognize her from the many times she's graced the pages of our print edition. What I'm trying to say is that Teresa Oman is pretty darn famous.
But she's also pretty darn cool, and probably one of the nicest, most fun models in the business. She speaks eloquently, has the best hair ever (a fact I can confirm upon meeting her), and a pretty rad wardrobe too. Of course, her Australian accent only makes her seem more cool, as do her slang phrases and love of rainbow clothing. So aside from being a supermodel in her own right (you can find even more proof of that on her agency, Re:Quest's website), she's also a super girl IRL. Need proof? Just read on for my interview with her, where she talked modeling, music, and being a little bit of a hippie.
You are one of the most re-blogged models in the world, what does that feel like? Yeah, well that just recently came out online. I was so mind-blown because I had no idea, and I beat a bunch of Victoria's Secret girls.
Does that make you feel awesome or nervous because you're so recognizable? Pretty awesome! I'm quite happy with it because I would have never expected that. It's a nice little accomplishment, but I feel like it's just the people on the internet who have done all the work!
Do you feel it's been harder for you as a model because you're on the shorter side? I think I definitely get different sorts of jobs, but I feel like the industry is changing in the way that girls can be a lot shorter now which is really good. I never thought that I would get to be in New York in the first place. I got denied by two agencies before I signed on with my mother agent in Sydney, and they pretty much said short people don't have much going on for them in the fashion industry. But things are changing and I'm really happy about it. One of my favorite models is really short. Her name is Anja Konstantinova and she was always my idol. I saw that she was always doing really well and she was always my inspiration to keep trying because you can be short these days.
So are Australians cooler than everyone else? I feel like all the coolest models, like you, Anja Konstantinova, and Abbey Lee, come from Australia. We do have a lot of very cool models in Australia. I think it's something in the water, but I love American people too. I feel like Americans are the friendliest people by far, overseas. [laughs]
Thanks, we'll take it! Was it a big transition for you to go from being a hippie Bryon Bay girl to literally traveling the world? It was a massive transition. I moved to Sydney, so that was a transition in itself. I never thought I would be in a city as big as New York. I've definitely learned a lot and grown up as a person. I've learned to be alone because it would be hard at times being on other sides of the world without knowing one or anything, but now I've made so many good friends, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.
When you're traveling, what are five things you always put in your suitcase? I have a framed picture of my two best friends and I that I bring everywhere. I've had that photo for ages. My suitcase itself is just a part of me now. My uncle and auntie got it for me for Christmas two years ago. It's a big, psychedelic rainbow suitcase.
So you never lose it at bag check? Never. It always stands out. I'm always getting compliments on it!
What would you say is your personal sense of style? I feel like that's a reason people are so drawn to you, because you always look cool in your own clothes. Thank you very much! I like anything that is old-school felling or has bright colors. I have a whole lot of secondhand clothes which are really cool. My best friend and I actually share clothes all the time.
Do you have a favorite piece of clothing? Yes. I have a denim jacket which is at my place in Sydney. I bought it in Portland, Oregon two years ago when I was visiting my sister. It's amazing. It's a regular denim jacket, but then it has all this rainbow embroidery all over it, and rainbow beading around the shoulders. It's like my lucky jacket. I think I wore it in to NYLON last year when Beth [Garrabrant, NYLON's Bookings Editor] was casting me for the one girl story in NYLON. It was my good-luck charm.
I know your parents run a music festival. What was it like growing up in a community that was so musically-influenced? Amazing. I remember when I was, maybe 11 or 10 years old, back when the festival was a lot smaller, I got to see James Brown live from the side of stage live. He was just so full of energy. I guess I never really understood how amazing what my parents do is because when I was in high school everyone would be like, "Oh, give me free tickets!" so I was actually kind of ashamed. But now I'm just so proud and so excited for them because every year the festival keeps growing bigger and bigger. You have to come!
What sort of music are you obsessed with? I'm into a massive mix. One thing I always love is feel-good disco music. KC & The Sunshine Band is my absolute favorite. I think I inherited that off my mum. Apart from that, a bit of everything. I like Tame Impala and Flight Facilities, two cool Australian bands, and then I really love the classics that you can listen to on a record player, like the Rolling Stones and David Bowie.
If someone were going to Australia, and she had to edit down a list of things that she can do on her trip, what would you say she'd have to do? I would say visit the East Coast--just everywhere on the East Coast. It's beautiful. I'm from the most easterly part of Australia which is a beautiful destination for surfing, but Sydney, where I live, is just incredible. There's no other city where you can get crystal clear blue waters and the city together. One thing I would suggest you can't miss is the Great Barrier Reef, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Unfortunately, our new prime minister is trying to dump and mine it at the moment, but we're hoping that that won't happen due to everyone petitioning. Anyway, with global warming, it is slowly fading so I think it that's one place you would have to see in your lifetime before it's not there anymore.
What's your favorite Aussie slang word? There is so much good slang! When I'm at home, with my housemates, who are my best friends, we always just talk in a super-Aussie accent. Right now, you haven't heard anything! I guess "mate" is my favorite slang word. How's it going, mate? [laughs]
What's one thing that you're obsessed with that people might be surprised to learn? One thing that I'm obsessed with is that I'm slowly working on becoming a YouTube sensation. t I love funny YouTube videos, so I'm just working on trying to find the right idea for me. I mean, I've got a pretty awesome "Wrecking Ball" parody that was shot in my living room in Sydney, but it needs to be re-done because it's a bit rough around the edges. I have a few good ideas cooking up and I'll be making sure to send you some links.

Death End Re;Quest Review
The post Death End Re;Quest Review appeared first on Fextralife.
Dark JRPG Death End Re;Quest review: Enjoy anime-style genre-melding combat that includes turn based, fighting, shooting and slots. This game review covers everything a prospective player needs to know, such as: How does the game play? Is the story engaging? How about replayability?
In Death End Re;Quest, players will explore a real and a digital world to unlock the secrets to multiple endings that blend fantasy and reality. And here’s what we thought while playing (this review currently covers up to Chapter 4, and will be updated after release to showcase the complete game)
Death End Re;Quest Review
youtube
Genre: RPG Developed by: Idea Factory/Compile Heart Published by: Idea Factory International Inc. Release date: February 19, 2019 (NA) & February 22, 2019 (EU) Platforms: PS4 (review platform) Price at the time of the review: $59.99
Death End Re;Quest Story & Setting
As many JRPG stories, the start is straight-forward, as players encounter a computer that is quickly parsing lots of code, only to “bug out”. The player then dives into the computer, into cyberspace itself and finds its digital world is being corrupted. The game sets the tone with a haunting piano tune that changes the otherwise bright digital world into an error-ridden, dark and buggy nightmare.
From here, the game introduces several heroines, each with its own color and animal theme, as well as distinctive approach to situations. Each heroine will find challenges in the digital world, as well as their own backstory and influence on the game’s multiple endings.
We are first introduced to Shina, who wakes up inside of World’s Odyssey with amnesia. She vaguely remembers she is an adventurer looking for the fabled Odyssia, a city in the skies. Despite initial appearances, progressing the story will reveal Shina’s true background and the darkness that lurks within it, while also allowing players to meet a close friend of hers and as both attempt to complete the game’s perfect ending.
When not in the digital world, players explore the world of Arata Mizunashi. The game sets constant peril for Arata during the investigation, but allows players to learn more about his daily life and his bonds with friends and associates. The story and setting provides a compelling experience of a normal life turning bizarre due to unforeseen events.
Regarding progression, players will be mostly handing Shina in the World’s Odysessy program until they reach an impasse. Then its time to swap to the real world and play as Arata. Exploring the real world and interacting with NPCs reveals clues about the world’s descend into the paranormal that will then be fed back into the game world. Solving these clues and obtaining this information allows Shina to progress further. Changes from Shina to Arata feel to happen naturally and at well-paced moments of the game, building up the suspense and atmosphere.
Death End Re;Quest Gameplay
Players control Shina as she explores the world of World’s Odyssey, a VRMMORPG she worked on with Arata. Shina and her group of NPCs will encounter enemies in turn-based combat. Players will fight monsters by shooting them with an energy ball in order to start the encounter in a favorable position (increase speed and ailments immunity). The game thus provides a familiar formula for a role-playing game including: merchants, equipment, spells, typing (sun, moon, star) and powerful bosses.
Battle Screen (Party Members, Turn List, Enemy, Bug Tiles)
The game is not necessarily forgiving, and players will meet their demise often. However, and unlike other titles, death comes with its own rewards and lessons. Exploring everything and seeing how going down one path will affect the game is a tempting and rewarding experience, even if it ends in tragedy. Thus, we feel players are encouraged to explore all paths and options despite their apparent cost, and this provides great replayability and a fantastic feeling of impact and consequence to your choices.
Observed Episodes
Death and Re;Quest has several innovative ideas and mechanics that set it apart from similar titles. These include the bug system, glitch mode, triact command, and the knockback system. A heavy and central theme is the introduction of bugs in the digital world of World’s Odyssey.
When players are in a fight there will be spots on the ground that are infected with bugs. Walking over them with Shina and other party members will increase their corruption while negatively impacting their health and recovering their SP. When corruption reaches 100%, Shina and other playable members will enter their glitch mode.
Glitch Mode provides an increase in stats and allows a powerful attack to be dealt in the triact command. The triact command allows players to use 3 actions in one character’s turn giving players a slew of options on approaching each fight.
Using the triact system allows players to knock an enemy into another enemy, wall, or at another friendly character to deal extra damage to them. At times, this will look like a chaotic ping pong game yet is so satisfying to pull it off successfully.
Status Screen
Like many RPG games, Death End Re; Quest has a typical status screens displaying stats, equipment, accessories, and costumes for each character. The screens help provide insight on how to optimize a character base on their strengths. (Magic character vs Strength character).
HP
SP
Attack
Defense

Death End Re;Quest Audio and Visual
The atmosphere of Death End Re:Quest is hauntingly beautiful. Locations are often bright, colorful and serene. The excellent world design gives players a great contrast of the intended digital world and the corruption plaguing it. The contrast between the gorgeous environments and the dark and gruesome corruption succeeds in making players care about fixing the errors.
Voice Acting for these type of games is typically scarce, so it was a welcome surprise to see excellent voice talent that added emphasis and eloquently delivered dialogue. This is accompanied by a matching music score that sets the right tone for each situation encountered.
Although the visuals doesn’t push the PS4 limits, I found the artistic style of the game to be quite charming and a nice contrast to the darkness of the game. Graphics are probably the weakest aspect of the game, and there is a noticeable difference between cutscenes and the game engine. There are also some strange object rendering issues, but nothing that was terribly off-putting or game breaking.
Death End Re;Quest Final Thoughts
If you are a fan of anime and JRPGs, this is an excellent title that does well at its core RPG elements and provides plenty of exploration and story choice. Seeking the consequences that lie down each of the many paths available is an enjoyable experience.
The game’s replayability lies in the ease of tried and true RPG mechanics and exploration, and is only slightly hindered by some boring side quests that might feel like a filler. But, whoever watches anime is plenty used to those and Death End Re;Quest is a well-rounded, fun title for JRPG anime fans.

re:quest [tension] - chapter 4
I don’t even know how it took me this long to do chapter 4 (please don’t ask). Unfortunately the last chapter will definitely take a while since I’ll be starting school soon, but I’ll definitely finish it at some point.
For those who haven’t read “tension”, the short story about the CCG art festival, you can read chapter 1 here. Enjoy!
(Thank you @tokyo-ghoul-out-of-context for proofreading.)
“Huh?” Koori-senpai, what are you doing?”
When Hairu had showed up to work at the S1 squad’s task room, she had found Ui cutting up photographs with a pair of scissors. “Do you have a grudge against those people in the photos or something?”
“Of course not.” Ui said, glaring at his hand. Hairu shrugged and sat down in her seat to escape from his line of sight.
When Ui finished cutting up the photo he had been holding, he began to clean up. Hairu rose from her chair and looked at him again. “Are you making a scrapbook then?”
Tumblr media
In addition, the photos he had were similar colours.
“...it’s for the art festival. I’m making a collage out of them.” It seemed like he was going to paste the photos he had cut out to form one complete piece of art.
“You’re going all out, huh?”
“If I’m going to do something, I’m going to do my best. If I hand in an unfinished product, I’ll look like a fool, and I don’t really want that to happen…”
Ui took a deep breath.
The annual art festival that had been a slump for all these years was now booming. It had become a topic of discussion among investigators, which was unheard of. And even though the deadline wasn’t near, the art festival executive committee was worried that the hall they rented every year to display the artwork wouldn’t be big enough to display them all.
“I never thought this would become this big of a deal.”
“Isn’t this what you wanted though, Koori-senpai?” Wasn’t this now an event that was suitable for Arima to adjudicate?
“...there’s a limit to everything.”
However, Ui was a pessimist. As Hairu pondered just what exactly was making him this high-strung, a visitor suddenly came into the room.
“Mmm...Koori-boy.”
With just a glance she could see the muscles bulging from the man’s brawny figure, hair styled into a pompadour coupled with a voluminous moustache. This was Tanakamaru Mougan, a Special Class investigator with a presence that was like overwhelming stench of a million spices mixed together.
He was a veteran investigator known as ‘Mougan of the 2nd ward’, but to Hairu he was simply someone who reeked of old man. His sweltering presence made it seem like the task room was heating up.
Ui stared wide-eyed at Mougan who looked like he had been planning to meet Ui all along, though it seemed like Ui hadn’t been expecting him at all.
“I heard about it, boy.” Mougan lumbered over to Ui’s side and approached him thoughtlessly.
“...h-heard what?”
“That you set this year’s art festival on fire!” Mougan was applauding for Ui as his way of praising him. Just how in the world did he make his claps sound like large explosions?
Ui was making a face that was impossible to describe because of the unwanted flattery. Was the sullen expression Ui made whenever the popularity of the art festival was brought up because this was the news that was being spread?
“I wholeheartedly believe that events that enrich life, or in other words, ‘adult extracurricular activities’, are a fantastic idea. Take me for example. I organized the CCG Dandy Contest and the Inter-ward Baseball Classic, though I wasn’t able to turn them into major events. Unbelievable, perhaps I should call you a young genius now...hmm?”
Mougan, who had been stroking his moustache the entire time while he was talking, grabbed Ui’s scraps of photos. “Koori-boy, you’re in the middle of making something as well! Hoh, how fascinating, you’re making a collage, I see.”
“Yeah…”
Mougan could guess what Ui was trying to make right away, thanks to his deep and extensive knowledge of culture from having grown up in a temple. “It must be difficult preparing the photos though.”
“I suppose…”
Mougan nodded in agreement, and then he suddenly made a fist and thumped his chest. “I see, boy! Is it that you need my help with your art!?”
“No, I’m good,” Ui said, turning him down.
But Mougan’s reply was, “Don’t hold back! So you were interested in my camera!?”
Once Mougan became like this, there was no stopping him. He firmly grabbed Ui’s shoulders. “Hahaha! Looks like we’ll be dripping sweat and tears for your fantastic art! Fwahahahaha!!”
Ui’s day is getting worse, Hairu thought as Mougan’s explosive laugh resounded in the room.
Even people with art experience were having difficulties. This wasn’t limited to just Ui, however.
“I told you, this should be like this, like this, like that, and this should be like that. Get what I’m sayin’, buzzcut?”
“No, I don’t get what you mean!” the Qs squad leader Shirazu yelled out without thinking in response to Saiko’s rude explanation.
Tumblr media
Shirazu and Saiko were currently in a family restaurant. Sitting on top of Shirazu’s table was a glass of juice brought from the fountain machine and a motorcycle magazine alongside a sketchbook which had two circles and horizontal lines drawn in it. At a quick glance the drawing looked like an eggplant or a cucumber, but it looked like a motorcycle to Shirazu.
Shirazu was trying to get an award from the art festival, as the winners would receive prize money, though it was a meagre amount. But to him, whose biggest desire was to make money, this was an opportunity that he couldn’t pass up.
The problem was that it was virtually impossible for him to win an award. Shirazu had lived a life unrelated to the arts, and going for a ride on his motorcycle suited his nature more than holding a paintbrush. Because of that, he was aiming for the honourable mention rather than shooting too high for the grand prize or the runner-up prize. He had asked Saiko to teach him how to draw because it seemed like her drawings that she doodled to waste time were easier to draw compared to Urie’s oil paintings.
But it was more difficult than he’d expected putting it into practice. “For starters, show me what you can do,” Saiko had said, so he had tried drawing a motorcycle while glancing back and forth at the magazine. But it was evident that he couldn’t draw to save his life.
“Shiragin, how’re you supposed to ride that spoopy horse?”
“...shut up.”
On the other hand, Saiko’s paper had a well-drawn motorcycle drawn in a distorted style. Shirazu and Saiko had drawn the same motorcycle, yet the drawings looked like completely different things.
“I thought it’d be easy to draw if it was familiar and something that I like…”
“Guys are just like that. They can’t see the people in front of them.”
“And this ain’t even a person. Shit…” Shirazu fell flat onto the table and groaned. “I just wanna cover my face in black ink, stamp it against the paper, and just submit that as my self-portrait.”
“I won’t stop you then.”
“That’s when you’re supposed to stop me.”
“As a squad member, I shall watch over the Qs squad leader’s naked body print.”
“Don’t say that.”
“Ahh, I wanna eat a ton of karaage.”
“I don’t care if that’s what you wanna order, just teach me properly!” Today was Shirazu’s treat to Saiko for helping him out.
“Right, right,” Saiko said as she pressed the call button to bring the waitstaff.
While he watched her order, Shirazu thought about how surprisingly peaceful it was now.
“...eventually I’ll forget that I’m an investigator.”
“You know, I always forget.”
“And just how do you do that?”
“‘Cause the only thing in my mind right now is karaage. Karaage, karaage!” Saiko sang the word in her own tune. In this kind of state she wouldn’t be able to coach him until she was done eating. Shirazu, having become bored again, began filling the blank spaces on the page with circles. The small circles began to multiply.
The reason why he had been noticing how peaceful things were was because of the Auction Cleanup Operation that had taken place recently. Shirazu harboured all kinds of emotions from that battle.
I want to...be beautiful.
Those were the words that his opponent Nutcracker had spit out after his finishing blow, words that didn’t sound like anything like what a ghoul would say. Because of that, when he stabbed her it hadn’t felt like he had exterminated a ghoul, but rather killed a person, and those emotions weighed down Shirazu’s heart. It had reminded him of the mortality of humans, and also related his father’s suicide.
He wasn’t the type to think too deeply, but he couldn’t erase these thoughts burning within himself. Though in that fight, it wasn’t just Shirazu’s heart that had been affected. All the Qs had been affected one way or another; it had affected Saiko who was always cracking jokes, it had affected Urie, it had affected Mutsuki as well.
“Lotsa nice circles there, Shiragin.”
“Hm? Oh, you’re right.” Before he knew it, Shirazu had drawn circles all over the paper without any gaps in between them.
“Wow, this is kinda disturbing.”
Looking at the aggregation of circles, Shirazu closed the sketchbook, but Saiko grabbed it. “THIS IS...ART!”
“The hell are you sayin’?”
She pulled the sketchbook out of Shirazu’s hand and looked at the page covered in circles. “Shiragin, draw a ton of small circles on a big piece of paper. A ginormous one.”
“Huh? That sounds like a pain to do, where’s the fun in that?” he said exasperatedly to Saiko, who sounded like she was off her rockers.
She waved her finger and clicked her tongue at him. “You don’t understand what art is, so of course you’d find it boring.”
“Oi, I’m startin’ to get pissed off at you art geeks.”
“Funny comin’ from the CCG bastard! Draw the damn circles, draw them!” Saiko shoved the paper in front of Shirazu’s face.
“Stop it already!” Shirazu said, swatting the paper away.
“Do you want the prize or not, Ginshira!?” Saiko exclaimed.
“I want it…”
“Then listen to what the charismatic Saiko has to say!”
The way he was right now, he wouldn’t even have a remote chance of winning the award. That being said, Saiko didn’t think that those circles would help him win one, but she felt that Shirazu could somehow manage since circles were easy to draw.
“Fine,” Shirazu replied.
Now that the artistic direction was settled, all that was left was to just draw it. He and Saiko split ways when Saiko said that she was going to go buy art supplies for herself, and he began walking to the Chateau.
“Art festival, huh…”
Urie was going to paint as always, and Haise was going to make a gingerbread castle with Mutsuki.
“...”
Now that he thought about it, it felt like Haise had changed as well after the Auction Cleanup Operation, though it was hard to say just what exactly had changed in him.
“...who knows, he might just be tired or something,” Shirazu muttered to himself, and then he suddenly remembered something. “Ah, that’s right.”
Shirazu changed his course of direction. He soon arrived at a cafe called :re, and passed through the entrance.
“Welcome,” the cafe owner came to greet with a gentle smile. She was a lovely woman who looked around Shirazu’s age.
“Ah, thanks.” Shirazu sat at the counter and ordered a cup of coffee which the taciturn male employee behind the counter prepared for him.
The aroma of coffee rising from the steam, he placed the cup to his mouth without waiting to cool it down. It was delicious as always. Haise had teared up when he drank this coffee.
“Looks like you’re the only one here today,” the owner called out.
Shirazu raised his head. “Ah, yeah. The black coffee I drank last time was amazing.”
“Thank you so much. Come to think of it, we met at the hospital as well.”
A while back Shirazu had gone with Hanbee from the Suzuya squad to visit Juuzou’s partner Shinohara, and that was when they had passed by each other. It had been just for that moment, but it seemed like she remembered.
If that was the case, then maybe he could bring up the topic.
“Um, has Sassan come by?” he asked. “Um, he was the person that was with me before. But not the one wearing the eyepatch…”
“I haven’t seen him recently,” she replied. Recently, so that meant that he came by a few times. “He must be pretty busy, I heard he was doing some investigator work.”
“Huh, I don’t think it’s that busy right now though…” He should have plenty of time now because things were usually calm after a big operation like the Auction Cleanup Operation. Maybe it was because he was spending time interacting with the ghoul he had invoked ownership rights over?
“...um, you know, there’s going to be a CCG art festival coming up soon.”
“C-CCG?” The manager seemed to respond more to the fact that he had said CCG instead of the art festival.
“Pretty weird, huh? Sassan and the guy with the eyepatch, Tooru, are gonna make a gingerbread castle. It’s gonna be pretty fun, so if you have time do you wanna drop by? It’s open to the public.”
“I’d love to go, but the shop…” She looked at the male employee standing behind the counter. The silent man was washing the mugs and didn’t seem to react to anything she had said.
“Oh, I guess there’s nothing you can do about that. It was only if you had time.”
“Yes. Thank you for offering.” The owner gave him a soft smile, then went back to work. Shirazu also finished his coffee and left the cafe.
“Hnn...so much for that.” He’d thought about how happy Haise would’ve been if she had come…
“Oh well. Though I’m pretty sure I saw Sassan pass by here secretly…”
If the opportunity came up, Shirazu would ask her again. This time Shirazu walked towards the Chateau.
“Did that guy leave yet?”
After Shirazu left, a bespectacled man appeared from the back of the shop. With a listless expression on his face, Nishio Nishiki, known by the CCG as the S-rate ghoul Serpent, sat down in a chair with a thud. His face had been covered by a mask back when he fought the Qs, but they still heard his voice, which was why he had been hiding in the back.
“Shouldn’t you go to the festival, Manager?”
Tumblr media
“Idiot,” the cafe owner, Kirishima Touka, replied to Nishiki’s words. She stared at the door that Shirazu had exited out of. If Sasaki Haise knew that he had spent time with Touka and the others as Kaneki Ken, what would he think?
“Make me coffee,” Nishiki demanded to Touka.
“Go make it yourself,” she retorted.
“So stingy,” he said, and he went behind the counter. “But an art festival, huh...it’s just like grade school.”
“What’s wrong with that? It sounds fun,” Touka said as she washed Shirazu’s mug.
School.
The sound of it made her chest ache.
Touka-chan, do you want to go to the zoo together?
She unexpectedly recalled that scene. This was back when she’d still been attending school.
The zoo?
Yeah! I can bring lunch, and we can go sometime during summer break...I want us to go together again. I know you’re busy with studying but…
It’s fine. It’s not like I’m gonna fail just by taking a day off.
In this life where all she’d done was lose, the only things she had accumulated were promises she’d been unable to keep.
Once we graduate, Yoriko, are we going to drift apart?
...I don’t wanna...
Yoriko. Even if we graduate, we’ll still hang out together.
The words she had said to her beloved friend in the end, became nothing but a lie.
“Hmm, I guess. Being able to do stupid things like that does seem like a lot of fun,” Nishiki said as he finished making his coffee. He then suddenly let out a sharp laugh.
“What’s that laugh for? You’re grossing me out.”
“What’d you say?”
Nishiki glared at her, but realizing that arguing would be pointless, he returned to his seat at the counter with his coffee in hand.
“I just remembered this guy from the school festival planning committee at the university who had the dumbest haircut.” He looked at Touka while grinning. He had been at the university that Nishiki had attended.
“...”
Touka looked at the door again. Even now, she still remembered the moment that she saw Kaneki - no, Sasaki Haise - appear and pass through that door.
Touka wiped the washed mug and returned it to the shelf. “Looks like he’s pretty valued by them.”
From the way Shirazu spoke, Kaneki was needed by them, and she could imagine that that was how Kaneki had come to call that place home.
“Valued? That’s kinda fucking scary, you comparing him to a female lion?”
“Huh? Want me to kill you?” She glared at him again, but feeling foolish she dropped her gaze right away. When she turned away, she saw Yomo looking at her, and she looked away again.
“...”
When was the last time he’d called her Touka-chan?
“...Nishiki, it’d be too difficult for me to go, so why don’t you go to the art festival in my stead instead?”
“Don’t you even feel a bit sorry for daring me to go out in this cold weather?”
The sun was setting, and soon the cafe would become crowded with salarymen and students commuting from school that Touka and Yomo would have to serve coffee to.
Speaking of which, a long time ago she had used her younger brother Ayato as her practice partner for making coffee. But no matter how much he drank, he never once said that it was delicious.
What would it taste like now? She wouldn’t be able to make her coffee taste like Yoshimura’s, but could she bring out the taste of Anteiku?
It was then that Haise floated into her mind. He had cried drinking her coffee. His name may have changed, but he was still him even with his memories lost.
Touka brought the coffee she’d made to her mouth. It wasn’t that she wasn’t lonely. It was just that there was an emotion more powerful than loneliness inside of her and in the cafe too.
The sun was setting, and the bars in town were bustling with people. The ghoul investigator, Fura Taishi, entered a cozy pub and found the back of a nondescript-looking man sitting at the bar.
“Hey,” he called out with a wry smile, without bothering to check who the person that blended into the pub was. The man, Hirako Take, looked over his shoulder. Seeing Fura, he gave him a small nod.
“Mind if I sit next to you?”
“Go ahead.”
Tumblr media
After ordering drinks, Fura talked to Hirako while snacking on the appetizers that they were served. “The art festival’s become a pretty big deal.”
“It really has.”
“Are you participating as well? What are you going to submit?”
“Kuramoto told me to submit pictures of my dog.”
“I see.”
Hirako was supposed to submit something but had no clue what to submit, so the vice squad leader Itou Kuramoto had suggested he take photos of his dog.
Speaking of photos, Ui was also using photos to make a collage, but he was losing his mind because of Mougan, who had suggested that they work together. All of Mougan’s photos that he took were spirit photography, which he couldn't use. It was strange, considering Mougan had grown up in a temple. Furthermore, Mougan had even destroyed his camera after being disgusted by a ghost that he had photographed.
“What about you?” Hirako asked as Fura took out his cigarette and lit it.
Fura shook his head silently. “Art isn’t really my thing, plus Arima isn’t making anything himself.”
It had only been for a short time, but Arima had been in the same class as Fura in the past. Fura had become an investigator, and it had been many years since he last spent time with Arima, but he couldn’t forget his memories from that time.
I’m going to continue pursuing ghouls, moving from place to place. It’s been a while since I spoke to someone my age. Although I wasn’t quite able to live a normal school life...it was surprisingly fun. Thank you.
They had met in his second year of high school. Arima was blunt, didn’t have much to say yet spoke too many unnecessary things, and was indifferent to his work. But he had saved Fura’s life in the process. Once Fura’s wish to defeat the ghoul who had robbed the life and right eye of his childhood friends was granted, Arima had left.
Even to this day, many years later, Arima was someone Fura didn’t understand, but he might just be the type who didn’t like talking and kept to himself.
“...hey, that reminds me.”
Hirako was now a squad leader with his own subordinates, but he had been requested to return to the Arima squad to help Arima. Considering how the vice squad leader Itou had grown, Hirako’s time there would be up soon. However, figuring that Hirako wouldn’t have much to say about that matter, Fura swallowed his words and smoked his cigarette instead. As the man who had served as the long-time partner of the ‘strongest investigator’, he must be carrying a heavy burden.
“...do you have pictures of your dog with you now?”
“No, the only ones I had I submitted already.”
“I see. I’ll look for them with my wife and daughter then.”
He exhaled the smoke from his mouth, and the smoke immediately dissipated.
Time went by, and the art festival slowly drew near.
“...one, two, three...fufu.”
The white drawing paper was steadily being coloured bit by bit by Hairu, who was sitting on the floor, surrounded by coloured pencils strewn about.
She had drawn a field of flowers, the backdrop of her memories.
Tumblr media
The deadline of the art festival that brought about excitement absent in previous years, finally arrived. Amidst the grief of the investigators who couldn’t make their artwork in time, the judging began.
“...why is there so much art?”
Every year, someone from the Washuu clan acted as the adjudicator. This year it was Washuu Matsuri. He looked at the crowded displays of artwork with a tired expression. Just reviewing all this artwork would take ages.
Meanwhile, Washuu Yoshitoki, the CCG Bureau Director and Matsuri’s father, looked at the art with a smile. “Isn’t this great? The art festival was a success!”
“It’s a waste of time.”
“These were all made with precious time. You should take your time admiring them,” Yoshitoki chided to the rebellious Matsuri. However, Matsuri’s discontent face refused to disappear.
A distance away from them, Arima was observing the artwork by himself.
He had been told to select just one piece of art that he liked. All he had to say was “I like this,” and that would be the end of it.
Arima moved forward at a quick pace.
He continued without stopping, and it seemed like he was going to run out of artwork.
“...”
Arima stopped. It was a single picture. A scene of flowers blooming profusely. Standing in the middle of the flowers was a gentle-looking teenager with black hair and a young girl.
“...”
A landscape from long, long ago.
Arima stayed there for a short while, gazing at that picture.
