Reverend Patrick Bell was born on May 12th 1799 at Auchterhouse near Dundee.
Born into a farming family Bell was brought up at the farrm at Mid Leoch and attended Auchterhouse Parish School before going on to study divinity at the University of St Andrews, leading to a career in the clergy.
It’s not as man of god that the good Reverend is remembered for, although he was a good man of the cloth, the reason for this post and how he went down in history is that he came up with an idea that saved a lot of time for farmers the world over in his invention of a reaping machine.
This reaping machine used a revolving 12 vane reel to pull the crop over the cutting knife, that was made from triangular reciprocating blades over fixed triangular blades. A canvas conveyor moved the grain and stalks to the side in a windrow. This machine was pushed by livestock and ran on 2 wheels.
Bell had a very analytical mind and was especially interested in engineering. He installed a gas lighting system at Mid Leoch and even took an interest in the cultivation of sugar beet, growing some and extracting sugar from it a century before the industry came to Scotland.
Many people, historians included, have mistakenly credited Cyrus McCormick of America as the inventor of the reaper in 1831. However it should be Patrick Bell who is recognised as the designer of a machine that was deemed far more efficient and reliable than any previous attempts. Four of his reapers went to America where it is likely they influenced the designs of both McCormick and his contemporary Obed Hussey.
On 10th of September 1828 he demonstrated his invention and later received a favourable report in the “Quarterly Journal of Agriculture” and received a premium of £50 from the Highland Agricultural Society, which barely covered costs.
Being a man of god, Bell did not file for a patent believing that his invention should benefit all. This led to various copies being made that were inferior to the Bell-made machines and they did nothing to encourage widespread usage. However around 10 of Bell’s machines that were sold in east central Scotland were sold in east central Scotland and, as previously mentioned, four crossed the Atlantic, others went to Australia and Poland.
At this time in history labour was still cheap and many farmers did not see the benefit of such a machine, preferring to stay with traditional methods. This was another case of a good invention being too far ahead of its time. However, the Bell machine was to prove itself as far as reliability and longevity was concerned, as the original machine continued for many harvests at Mid Leoch before going to work for many more at his brother’s Inchmichael Farm.
In 1852 it was put in a good state of repair and shown at the Highland Show at Perth where it was thought by many to be the latest machine on the market. However, the Americans eventually began to sell greater quantities of reaping machines no doubt due to their lightness, manoeuvrability and competitive mass-produced pricing.
Meanwhile, now ordained, the Reverend Bell became minister of Carmyllie parish where he continued an interest in engineering, working at his bench at the manse. He remained unaffected by all the clamour that his machine had caused.
The Inchmichael machine, fastidiously looked after by his brother, ended up in the Science Museum in London where it still resides today.
Two contemporary models of the machine were presented to the National Museum and one is on show at the National Museum of Rural Life at Kittochside, East Kilbride. A third was presented by his daughters to the agricultural department of Aberdeen University.
Today’s combine harvester has thus developed from the work of two ingenious Scotsmen - it is a combination of Andrew Meikle’s threshing mechanism and Patrick Bell’s reaper.
The second pic is one of The Rev's reaping machine, only a small number of these machines were constructed, and the extant of Bell's influence has been controversial. Four were exported to the USA before 1831, but the same year Cyrus McCormick introduced a more commercially successful machine. At the Great Exhibition in 1851 American reapers from McCormick and Hussey created a stir and helped to promote the acceptance of reapers in this country. However, Bell received belated recognition for his pioneering work and in 1867, two years before his death, he was awarded a £1000 prize by the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland. The contraption is on display at the Science Museum in London

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

Here’s hoping history treats the Honey Badger well 🍯🦡🇦🇺
Casual viewers of my post may be under the impression I hated Daniel Ricciardo. You would be wrong. I really like Daniel Ricciardo. What I hated was the shitshow circus of fans he brought with him (predominantly Aussie men, who couldn’t bear a woman with an opinion).
I have seen him race twice in his F1 career, in his 2nd season and what I now know was his last season. His arrival at McLaren for me was Christmas come early, set to a backdrop of blinding light and Hallelujah Chorus. However there was no fairytale beginning, middle or ending for Daniel Ricciardo. And as I sit here now I’m so confused how I feel, how I should feel and how history will remember him.
When he first arrived in Formula 1, there was nothing really to say this guy is special. In fact I don’t even remember him being on the grid of the first Grand Prix I went to. Admittedly history will remember that was the season where 8 past, present or future World Champions were on the grid, an upstart from Perth was barely noticed. After all Mark Webber won the race so even Australia was distracted.
In fact I don’t really remember him until he arrived at Red Bull in 2014. And even then it was a case of well of course he should do well, the car is great. Mostly I remember him being a menace off track to Seb Vettel (who back then totally deserved it)
However the carefree laughter of his first win was stopped that season when Daniel’s close friend, someone he believed he would go through Formula 1 with, Jules Bianchi was involved in his horrendous accident in Japan. As the years went by you could see he still carried some of the grief from that with him.
But he was not about to let this opportunity slip through his hands. Daniel became a driver everyone loved off track and who regardless of who you supported, you wanted him to do well. Although the sentiment was there long before Drive to Survive, they perfectly capture the swell of goodwill there was in the paddock for him.
I’m not sure any of us will ever truly know what went on behind closed doors in 2018. I will freely admit from the outside it really did look like Daniel was being hung out to dry in favour of Max. I watched that season before Netflix re-edited it and honestly, everyone believed the same thing at the time. There was muddy reports of a court case between Daniel and a former manager beginning to surface. Ultimately something led to him leaving Red Bull and it really did look like he was running away from a fight.
So when he started the 2019 season at Renault and he lost his front wing before the first corner, yes we all sniggered. But over the two years he proved us all wrong. He was exciting to watch, this was the Danny Ric we all fell in love with. He dragged Renault to the podium.
When he announced he was leaving Renault at the beginning of the 2020 to join McLaren the following year question marks appeared. However, it was generally rumoured that he was unhappy with the back room manage at Renault, though the official reasons were that he always wanted to work with Andreas Seidl.
Paul De Resta said cryptically at the time “I hope he tells you what he’s done in that team”. We never found out.
He arrived at McLaren as the darling of the paddock and threatening to destroy Lando (clearly this time he was up for the fight).
Hmmmmm
Even at the time it was obvious why McLaren implemented team orders in Monza in 2021. They had not won a race, let alone a 1-2 in so long. Daniel had struggled soooo much that season and needed the confidence that win gave him. Lando had a long career ahead to get wins. I don’t begrudge Daniel that win, but my God the reimagining of events from his fans was the start of a downward spiral they never got out of.
The second season at McLaren was painful. I said it then, I felt he had lost his spark and his love for the sport. What he feared Max would do to him at Red Bull because of favouritism, Lando was doing to him on equal terms. You could see the questions he had of himself. Yet with all that going on, you could see the care he had for Lando. The way he kept his spirits up after he split with his girlfriend. You saw Daniel the person, rather than Daniel the racing driver.
Should he have walked away then? Maybe. But I respect he didn’t feel he was done, he had unfinished business. And with Kimi, Lewis and Fernando making driving a F1 car in your 40s seem easy, 33 felt too young to retire.
His return to AlphaTauri felt wrong. I was all for second chances but I’d been screaming about Liam Lawson in that seat since 2022 and for a second driver that wasn’t him to be given the drive was infuriating. I think the final bit of the old Daniel Ricciardo drove into the barrier avoiding Oscar Piastri in Zandvoort, broke his hand, got out the car and never returned.
Walking round Silverstone this year it was so evident. Where had all the Daniel Ricciardo fans gone? Over 3 days I saw 2 people in VCarb shirts and 1 girl on the Saturday with a Daniel McLaren hat. All that love he had received for a decade was dwindling. He was like the forgotten man.
Selfishly I’m so glad that ironically I remember seeing Daniel almost the most on track that weekend. The bold number 3 flashing past me. Very much screaming I’m still here. I remember still feeling, please do well. It wasn’t the same thrill as seeing Lewis or Lando go past, or realising that’s Charles or Carlos are in that car but it was Daniel, he’d survived so much and I was so happy to see him there still.
So now, I’m angry and upset how the end came to pass. To race for the last time, not knowing for sure if it was. For your farewell to be tributes from other drivers and members of teams he’d worked with after the event on social media. It’s Singapore no one had the energy to go and congratulate Lando, but this was the first win Daniel didn’t go to him, because he was sat in his car for the last time, probably struggling with his own emotions. He’d played the team game to the last, knowing full well they were probably going to sack him within a week.
Netflix had at times made him appear cocky and arrogant and yet the Daniel who was godfather to Natalie Pinkham’s son and welcomed Lando to his farm last year (which to this day remains a very private trip) doesn’t seem to be the same man. I truly believe that Max, Daniel and Lando flying to Singapore together was a way for them to try and support him on the long flight there, knowing what he was probably facing. He wasn’t going to ask for it, his pride wouldn’t let him, but he was grateful for it.
What worries me now is, my memories of Daniel are of a great driver, who was amazing fun to watch. Inspired so many of the younger drivers on the grid now. Badly advised at times refused to give up. Yet his stats read 8 wins, 32 podiums and 3 poles.
I struggle with that stat. For context Lando has taken 5 poles this season so far. Valtteri has 10 wins, 67 podiums and 20 poles and was considered a number 2 driver. Charles started 6 1/2 seasons after Daniel sits at 7 wins, 39 podiums and 26 poles.
How is his return so little? Am I remembering this wrong? I remember everyone loving Daniel at one point. He was lauded as a great racer. Where are the stats that back that up?
I look at the grid now, those who still trail Daniel, Lando, Oscar, George (maybe it’s too much to hope Carlos) and I know they will surpass his totals. And that’s just this current grid. Why did he not have more? It felt like there was more!! He drove like there was more.
As the years go by those stats will fade into the “average” category of drivers. It certainly didn’t feel like I was watching an average driver at the time.
Let’s see what history makes of Daniel Ricciardo in 10 years, 20 years. This I promise you though. Netflix will never capture what it felt like to live through it beginning to end.

WNBA Finals: The Australian and WNBL connections run deep
Tipping off tomorrow, Las Vegas and New York face off in the WNBA Finals, and there's plenty of Australian and WNBL storylines to follow.
HAYLEY WILDES
The WNBA Finals get underway tomorrow morning with Game 1 tipping off at 6am AEDT and after an incredible season, it all comes down to the two preseason favourites battling it out in what is sure to be a Finals to remember.
Las Vegas will be aiming to make it back-to-back championships, while New York will be hoping to claim the franchise’s maiden championship. 2022 WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson and 2023 WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart headline both teams, while the likes of Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones will have a huge say in the outcome of the series.
Speaking of those that will have a big impact in the championship decider, there are a myriad of connections to Australia and the WNBL, with players with WNBL experience set to light up the Finals and a very familiar head coach.
There are three players on each team who have played in the WNBL, and of course Opals head coach Sandy Brondello is running the show in New York. This demonstrates the standing and importance of Australian basketball in the best league in the world.
For New York, Betnijah Laney, Kayla Thornton and Jocelyn Willoughby have all had stops in the WNBL, while Las Vegas’ Jackie Young and Kierstan Bell have suited up in the WNBL, and Opals superstar Cayla George is also on the squad.
Laney and Young in particular have taken their respective careers to new heights after stints in the WNBL and will be among the most important players in the series.
Laney was a revelation for the Perth Lynx in 2015/16, alongside the likes of Sami Whitcomb and Tessa Lavey. That squad made it all the way to the Grand Final series and although they ultimately lost to the Townsville Fire, there’s no doubt it was a special season for the Lynx. Laney led the team in rebounds (7.7 per game) and assists (3.8), while also adding 14.7 points per game (second to Whitcomb at 19.2).
Her toughness and work ethic shone through back then and she returned to the league in season 2017/18 with the Bendigo Spirit, creating a dominant duo with Kelsey Griffin. That season wasn’t to be for Bendigo, with Griffin’s season ending after just six games due to a hip injury, but Laney battled until the end, averaging 14.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
After struggling to find her groove in the WNBA, everything changed in 2020 with the Atlanta Dream when she averaged 17.2 points per game, up from 5.6 the previous season. She won the Most Improved Player Award and was named to the All-Defensive Team that season.
Now she is a force for the star-studded Liberty team. As well as being a defensive headache, Laney is just super efficient on the offensive end, making her the perfect fit alongside the likes of Stewart, Jones, Ionescu and Vandersloot. This season she has averaged 12.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists on 49.9% shooting from the field and 39.2% from three.
Young was on the rise prior to coming to Perth for season 2021/22, but really announced herself as one of the best players in the WNBA after her summer with the Lynx. Young spent one season with Perth, in a loaded squad that included college teammate Marina Mabrey, Whitcomb, Darcee Garbin and Lauren Scherf.
Although the Lynx lost to the Boomers in the Grand Final, Young was massive. Despite a slowish start to the season, she quickly found her groove and became deadly on both ends of the court. After averaging 17.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game for Perth, Young returned to Las Vegas a different player.
Not known for her three-point shooting in pervious seasons, Young showcased her improvement over the off-season and incredibly became one of the WNBA’s best three-point shooters, finishing third in the league for three-point percentage in 2022. Young’s newfound three-point shooting was integral in the Aces run to the Championship and she was named an All-Star for the first time in her career, while also taking out the WNBA’s Most Improved Player Award.
This season, Young has taken her game to a new level, and much like Laney, it’s all about efficiency and finding a role within a team full of stars. Named an All-Star again, Young is just an assassin on offence, averaging a career-high 17.6 points per game on otherworldly shooting splits of 52.3% from the field, 44.9% from three and 86.7% from the line.
Kayla Thornton, Jocelyn Willoughby and Kierstan Bell all played in the WNBL last season, and Willoughby will be back in the league this summer.
Thornton starred for Southside last season, helping lead the squad to an unlikely Finals appearance after a season filled with injuries. She was everything the Flyers could’ve hoped for in an import and played both side of the ball extremely well.
Leading the team in points (15.7 per game) and rebounds (6.8), Thornton announced herself on opening night with 21 points and 8 rebounds, and never looked back.
While playing for Southside earlier this year, Thornton was traded from Dallas to New York as part of the deal that landed former WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones in New York (and saw Bec Allen head in Connecticut). Although her minutes are down compared to what she playing in Dallas, her importance to New York cannot be underestimated. She’s a star in her role and brings it every game on both ends of the floor.
She does all the little things well and Brondello knows she can rely on Thornton whenever she calls her number.
In a rocky season for the Flames last season, Willoughby just kept working. A coaching and point guard change mid-season threw Sydney into chaos, but Willoughby – as well as Keely Froling and Tiana Mangakahia – did all they could to remain competitive.
Willoughby averaged 15.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game, and will suit up for Adelaide this coming season alongside fellow import and WNBA player Brianna Turner. Willoughby is played sparingly off the bench by Brondello and appeared in 29 games in the regular season.
Bell only played nine games for the Lightning last season before returning to the States. She showed flashes of what Adelaide would’ve been hoping for from her (she did average 14.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game), but it was shortlived. Back with Las Vegas in her second season of WNBA, Bell hasn’t been able to lock down totally consistent rotation minutes, but for a second-year player on a loaded squad such as the Aces, she’s done well to fight for minutes. She’s shown enough potential to be an option off the bench for Becky Hammon in certain match-ups and is only improving.
Cayla George has done it all in Australian basketball – won WNBL championships, a WNBL MVP, represented the Opals on countless occasions, highlighted by Olympic and World Cup campaigns – and now she is trying to add a WNBA championship to her resume.
George hasn’t seen consistent court time for the Aces this season. She has struggled with her long-range shooting (23.4% shooting from deep), which is vital to her game considering over 60% of her shots this season have been from beyond the arc. With that being said, she’s the type of player that has remained ready and is very clearly a positive personality to have on your bench.
Speaking of positives on the bench, Sandy Brondello has done a fantastic job balancing the many mouths to feed on a Liberty squad boasting ridiculous star power. She will be aiming for her second WNBA championship, after leading Phoenix to the 2014 title, with fellow Aussies Penny Taylor and Erin Phillips members of that squad.
Brondello has long been known as a defensive-minded coach and while the Liberty owned the third best defensive-rating this season (101), their offence was even stronger, finishing second with an offensive rating of 111.8.
Incredibly, as per ESPN, Brondello and Becky Hammon facing off will mark the first time in WNBA history that two former WNBA players will meet as head coaches in the Finals.
This truly is a meeting of the juggernauts and all I can say is, sit back and enjoy!
WNBA Finals schedule
Game 1: Monday, 9 October @ 6am AEDT
Game 2: Thursday 12 October @ 12pm AEDT
Game 3: Monday 16 October @ 6am AEDT
Game 4 (if necessary): Thursday 19 October @ 11am AEDT

A Comprehensive Guide to Stage and Lighting in Australia
When it comes to hosting memorable events in Australia—be it a concert, corporate function, wedding, festival, or theatre production—stage and lighting play a crucial role in the overall success. These two elements not only enhance visibility and engagement but also shape the atmosphere and professionalism of the entire event. With Australia’s dynamic event scene and diverse venues, understanding the essentials of stage and lighting hire can make a significant difference.
The Role of Staging in Events
Staging provides the physical platform for performances, speeches, and presentations. It elevates the action, giving clear sightlines for the audience and structure to the space. In Australia, professional staging companies offer modular and portable stage systems suitable for both indoor and outdoor venues. These stages are typically customisable in height and size and are designed to be weather-resistant—an important feature for Australia’s varied climate conditions.
Staging services often include delivery, installation, safety checks, and dismantling. Add-ons like stairs, ramps, skirting, and branding panels help create a polished look while maintaining accessibility and safety. Whether it’s a small podium for a corporate talk or a large festival stage with rigging for sound and lighting, Australian stage hire companies have solutions to meet every need.
The Importance of Lighting
Lighting transforms events from ordinary to unforgettable. In Australia’s professional events industry, lighting is used not just to illuminate but also to create mood, focus attention, and enhance performances. A well-designed lighting setup can make a dramatic difference, especially for concerts, weddings, theatre productions, and fashion shows.
Common lighting options include stage wash lights, spotlights, uplights, LED panels, moving head lights, and special effects like strobes or hazers. Intelligent lighting systems, which can be programmed for movement, colour changes, and timing, are widely used for dynamic events. Australian lighting providers also offer control systems, DMX programming, and technicians to manage cues during performances.
Outdoor lighting setups are designed to be robust and weatherproof, ensuring performance in varying conditions across cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth.
Combining Stage and Lighting for Maximum Impact
To truly elevate an event, stage and lighting should be planned together. Australian production companies often offer packages that include both staging and lighting equipment, managed by experienced crews who understand spatial design, audience flow, and safety regulations. Coordinating these elements ensures that lighting fixtures are correctly positioned, power is safely distributed, and the final setup supports both the performers and the audience experience.
For events requiring audiovisual support, many suppliers also offer integrated sound systems, trusses, video walls, and rigging services, streamlining the planning process for event organisers.
Conclusion
Stage and lighting are essential components of successful event production. In Australia’s competitive and creative events industry, investing in professional stage and lighting services ensures a seamless, visually engaging, and safe experience for everyone involved. Whether you’re planning a small indoor gathering or a large-scale outdoor concert, the right staging and lighting setup will elevate your event and leave a lasting impression.

LED Explosion-Proof Lighting Integral to Australian Offshore Oil Platforms
(Perth, Australia) – Australian offshore oil platforms are embracing LED explosion-proof lighting as part of efforts to improve operational safety in harsh environments. Given the high risks of combustible gases and the unique challenges of working in offshore conditions, LED lights are emerging as a key tool in improving both safety and energy efficiency.
"LED explosion-proof lighting is vital for ensuring safe operations on our offshore rigs," said James Walker, safety officer at an oil platform off the coast of Western Australia. "The lights not only meet our safety standards but are also cost-effective in the long term due to their energy savings and extended lifespans."
As Australia’s energy sector increasingly focuses on sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint, LED explosion-proof lights are expected to become a crucial component of offshore safety strategies. led explosion proof lighting https://www.eneltec-led.com/products/led-explosion-proof-lights

The Ultimate Guide to LED Masks and Neck Light Therapy in Australia — Featuring CELLRETURN Australia
Tumblr media
Introduction
In the ever-evolving world of skincare technology, LED light therapy has emerged as one of the most trusted and effective non-invasive treatments. Whether you’re combating acne, signs of ageing, or uneven skin tone, LED masks in Australia are helping people achieve glowing skin from the comfort of their homes.
More recently, neck LED masks have also entered the market, targeting an often-neglected area: the neck and décolletage. From LED therapy for the neck to full-face rejuvenation, brands like CELLRETURN Australia are leading the way with advanced light therapy technology.
This comprehensive guide explores the benefits, science, and usage of LED masks, including full-face and neck LED light therapy devices, while spotlighting premium offerings from CELLRETURN.
What Is LED Light Therapy?
LED (Light Emitting Diode) therapy is a skin treatment that uses different wavelengths of light to target various skin concerns. Originally developed by NASA for wound healing, it’s now a mainstay in dermatology clinics and increasingly in home-use devices like LED masks.
Types of LED Light Wavelengths & Their Benefits:
Red Light (630–660nm): Stimulates collagen, reduces wrinkles, improves skin texture
Blue Light (415nm): Kills acne-causing bacteria, reduces breakouts
Near-Infrared Light (850nm+): Penetrates deeper layers, improves blood circulation and healing
Purple/Pink Light (Combo): Skin rejuvenation and recovery
Amber Light: Reduces inflammation and improves radiance
LED Mask Australia: Why It’s Trending
More Australians are turning to LED light therapy for hair growth for non-surgical, at-home facial treatments that require zero downtime. These masks are popular among both skincare enthusiasts and professionals.
Top Benefits of Using an LED Mask:

On 8th January 1313 the forces of Robert Bruce seized Perth from the English garrison.
Bruce was determined to take Perth, and lay siege to it but, owing to the strength of the fortifications, it defied for six weeks all the efforts of his army.
The town finally fell on this day in 1313 his day in 1313 by an army led by King Robert himself. This victory was significant as it brought all of Scotland north of the Forth under Bruce's control. However, it was also a source of embarrassment for later Scottish writers seeking to cast King Robert in a positive light, as the events of 8th January seem to have degenerated into a bloodbath.
By 1313, the tide of the war had very much turned in Bruce's favour. He had defeated his main Scottish opponents at the Battles of Inverurie and the Pass of Brander in 1309, survived an English invasion of Scotland in 1310-11, and even begun raiding into northern England. 1312 had ended on something of a sour note when the barking of a dog had thwarted a Scottish attempt to capture Berwick by surprise, but undeterred Bruce marched his men north to lay siege to Perth. Perth was no easy target - its castle had not been rebuilt since a flood in 1209 but it was still protected by a wall and a water-filled ditch. It seems that Bruce was counting on the English being unprepared for the Scots to keep up the military pressure on them during the frigid Scottish winter (normally, the campaigning season would last from spring to autumn at the most). Certainly, both the contemporary Lanercost Chronicler and the late Scottish writer John Barbour blame the fall of Perth at least in part on the negligence of the garrison. On the night of 7th January, under cover of darkness, the Scots surged across the ditch in force and threw ladders against the wall, pouring into the town and overwhelming the unprepared defenders. By the morning of the 8th, Perth belonged to Bruce.
The aftermath of the capture of Perth is a source of some disagreement among contemporary and near contemporary historians, possibly because many of those writers felt uncomfortable with the facts as they saw them. The earliest surviving account comes from the Lanercost Chronicle, which claims that those in the town 'who were of the Scottish nation' were put to death, although the Englishmen there were allowed to return home. The earliest surviving Scottish account of the incident - written by John Fordun in the 1360s - states that 'the disloyal people, both Scots and English, were taken, dragged and slain with the sword', although he attempts to mitigate this by emphasising that their disloyalty is what earned them this fate and adding that the king spared anyone who begged for mercy. Writing about a decade after Fordun, the Scottish poet John Barbour - who was writing to lionise King Robert's memory - addressed this aspect of the capture of Perth simply by denying it, claiming that Bruce had specifically ordered his men not to kill anyone unless they refused to surrender without a fight. Despite Barbour's protestations, it would seem that the capture of Perth was accompanied by considerable bloodshed. If we are being generous to Bruce - and most historians who have written about the fall of Perth have been inclined to be just that - any executions after the town's capture can be understood as a very emphatic way of discouraging disloyalty among his subjects in other towns around the kingdom, a common enough tactic in medieval warfare.
As noted above, with the capture of Perth King Robert could now claim to control all of Scotland north of the Forth. Further offensives later in the year secured Bruce's control of the south-west, so that by the end of the year only Lothian and the Borders remained in English hands, that is of course other than the stronghold of Stirling Castle.
The efforts of the Scots to bring the Lothians area, and Stirling Castle into their control would lead directly to the Battle of Bannockburn.
