So with severe storm season well under way in the south and creeping north I feel the need to share a few extra tips from your local weather nerd. I am by no means an expert here, but I thought I’d share what I’ve learned over the years of nerding out.

First off tornado sirens have two modes. Alert and attack. Alert is a steady tone where it climbs once and remains in one tone. This is basically, “get inside and tune in.” Attack on the other hand which is the up and down sound you hear often with old air raid movie scenes or tornado scenes is basically, “shit hit the fan, take shelter NOW.”

When you do get a tornado warning, scroll down some. It’ll show you a source which is pretty helpful information if you also have tornado anxiety and got cursed with having that being your special interest.

Radar indicated means that radar has an algorithm they use to pick up different indications that there’s rotation within a supercell. Tune in and pay attention and keep a wary eye on the sky. It doesn’t always mean a tornado, but it’s possible the supercell could drop one at any time because she’s a-spinnin’.

Radar confirmed means radar has rested true or otherwise picked up on a TVS signature. Another rotation-in-the-cell sign. Definitely tune in and start taking shelter because you’re a little more fucked than indicated.

Spotter/emergency management confirmed means whelp, you’re absolutely fucked so you better be in that shelter spot immediately. It’s basically eyes on the sky has eyes on the tornado.

Additionally you may hear terms like velocity scans, velocity couplers, debris ball etc. This is what they’re talking about (albeit a more extreme version)

Relative velocity is basically a wind scan. The radar is scanning winds within the storm and if you see red against green there’s a good chance of rotation tho it’s not always the case. I’m still teaching myself how to spot this.

Debris ball basically means the tornado is on the ground and is lofting debris into the atmosphere and the radar is picking it up. In the most extreme cases you’ll actually see this on reflectivity (regular radar precipitation).

On a final note, I recommend RadarScope over noaa weather. It’s just a lot better. I’ve also seen chasers use radaromega too. I’d also recommend watching Ryan Hall and Max Velocity over on YouTube.

i've started reading the amazing spiderman (comic) starting from the origin story and it has completely changed my perception of spiderman. for starters, peter parker starts off kinda unlikeable and i think that's hilarious. like yeah maybe i can forgive a couple slugs from the green goblin. he's getting better tho the other most important thing.
