Shadow of a Deity Chapter 4: Shadow and Mask
He was not having a good day.
Not a good week really. Or a good month. Or a good year.
Not even a good existence.
But what else were you supposed to do when you're the personification of darkness for the Hero? It wasn't a great job, being a test for a snot-nosed kid who barely knew how to grip a sword, but it was a job nonetheless. Except when that kid decides not to show up and you're left to rot in the temple for years and years with nothing to distract you. So what do you do? Get bored? Get mad?
Get revenge?
It wasn't supposed to happen this way. The heroes were more creative than he thought, had more tricks up their sleeves than he realised. It was supposed to be easy, a little challenge after so many years of inactivity. Just a fight against the Hero and everyone like him. A little bit of action!
A little bit of murder…
It was never that easy, was it?

So the headcannon that Wind can see ghosts right?
Headcannon, he can see Mipha revive Wild
Headcannon, he can see lil Time, who died, watch over Legend and Hyrule
(ie worry over when they look sad or curl up and sleep w/ them)
Headcannon, he can see Fierce Deity float around Time, Wars, and the others
(ie poking Wars in the ribs and muttering about his eating habits, trying to push Time back to his bedroll, attempting to tuck Wild in, fretting over whenever Twilight gets injured, sitting by a homesick Sky, curled up around Legde and Rulie w/ lil dead Time's ghost, making funny faces at Wind once discovering he can actually see him)
Headcannon that whenever it seems Four's eyes look purple-ish, he sees Shadow flicker over him with a very fond look in his eyes
Headcannon that Wind can see the first one flash to life above them full of fury when one gets badly injured or angry, he's the most corporal, so much so that Wind thought he was alive the first time, he particularly likes Sky
Headcannon that none of them know until Wind tells them or something happens

Hello!! LU requests? 👀 With your outstanding art??
Hmm (I have many ideas, choose one if you want)
1- Someone uses a lightning rod/tool and it somehow hits Sky too. His right hand and arm hurt so much he faints, the others take off his glove and roll up his sleeve and notice how it is gull of lightning scars
2- Twilight gets hit where Dink got him last time. The cut reopens, Time brings him away again but this time Twilight is human and Time can't hold the tears
3- This time it's Time that gets hit and Twilight brings him away
4- Four. Corrupted. :) Bonus if Legend fights him to prevent him from hurting the others
5- Wars gets hit by Dink (hw reference?)
so many choices! I went with #2 hehe. the ANGST
OK I KNOW I said I wasn't gonna do comics for these requests but AGH this one had a hold on me. But at the same time, this took longer than expected T3T . ALSO I LOVE those other ideas too! might come back to one of them later hehe
I hope ya like it @bluesdesk!

sorry yall don't get to see the other boys engaged in the battle around them, I have trouble with drawing too many characters on screen. it looks over-crowded when I do😅

fic idea: the chain reconvenes again for one last “adventure”, each taken weeks or months before their deaths
there’s no actual adventuring, and it’s mostly just travel. They fight no monsters, hunt no creatures. They simply travel, horseback to horseback, through various temples across various eras, solving puzzles and spending time together. A gift from the goddesses, one could say.
Wind ‘s far older, an old man easily in his 80’s (if not more). His skin is tanned by the sun, his hair is grey and faded, he has numerous scars across his body, and his left leg is replaced by a peg leg. But he hasn’t changed at all beyond age; he still plays the same pranks, tells stories with the same vigor, speaks about the great see with the same renowned. He talks about Tetra, and the new kingdom they started decades ago. He jokingly mourns about not having gone down at sea, but he doesn’t truly mind. In new hyrule, all new heroes and knights go to pay respects in the new temple of time, where the wind waker and phantom sword mark the grave of the hero of winds.
Hyrule looks the same, but he demeanor and stories tell tales many decades old. He radiates magic; flowers bloom around him, a stream of fairies follows him, and anyone who touches him feels their aches and injuries ebb away. Despite barely changing, he tells stories of magic and mystery, of a rebuild hyrule and how magic has returned. The hero of Hyrule’s death, and whether it qualifies as death, is commonly debated. Often around the new fairy fountain, blooming with magic and life once belonging to Hyrule himself, in the middle of Castle Town.
Twilight is older, in his late 60’s. Years of shepherding and farming has taken its toll on his body, but he will always claim it as worth it. He can’t lift nearly as much as in his youth, but he prides himself on being the strongest old man in town. Wolfie is old and grey now, the dark grey on his coat faded nearly to silver, and the sharpness of his eyes as faded. He never saw Midna again, but he will always say (with near-complete truth) that he is content. The Twilight Mirror was reconstructed 20 years after Twilight’s passing. It’s said that a woman with fiery red hair would be found every day along the humble tombstone at the top of the hill.
Wild is about the same age as Twilight. His body, once covered in scars, has gained a few more; his right arm is still charred and blackened from Gloom, and his right leg (and some of his fingers) have been replaced with Sheikah prosthetics. He still has his youthfulness though, in spite of his inability to travel and explore as far on foot, and tells stories about traveling with Zelda to find ingredients for his next recipe (a collection of which he carries in a book about 700 pages long). Travelers will soon find what remains of the shrine of resurrection. It was reconstructed and repurposed after the calamity, but it now has a new purpose. The Sheikah gave it a new symbol marking its new purpose- “rest”.
Four is older, maybe the same as Wild, and still the same height and just as quiet and agile. The four sword still rests against his back- or theirs, to be exact, since the colors have been separated for years, maybe decades at this point. They joke about it- four times the life experience and smithing knowledge came in handy, and they’re preparing for their next project. During the hyrulean civil war, one of the last battles of the war, it’s said that four elderly men, looking the exact same, stepped onto the battlefield, wielding the same sword. It’s said that days afterwards, a mother would flee with her newborn child into the forest, and that that hylian would be raised by the kokiri.
Sky is nearing 50, and that even though his demeanor and kind spirit havent changed, everyone can see the happiness in his eyes. He wears a royal cloak and tunic, and he tries to be discreet about it. But everyone can see the rings, encrusted with diamonds and jewels- wedding bands. Everyone can see the crown that he tries and fails to make an effort to hide in his bag. Everyone can see the picture of a family he smiles at when no one was looking. Everyone can see how complete he is. The first king of hyrule died suddenly but peacefully in his sleep beside his wife. It’s said that the sword that now laid in the temple of time glowed and pulsed, as if humming a somber tune.
Warriors, once a confident young captain, is now a confident young (in spirit) general. The same age as Sky, various scars on his body tell the stories of battles in subsequent decades, of his new achievements. He doesn’t boast his status (though will occasionally and jokingly pull rank in small arguments). He says he hasn’t settled down yet, but everyone notices the fond way he talks about Zelda. The hero of warriors died peacefully in his sleep the night after a royal banquet. Some blamed it on the wine, others blamed it on wartime injuries that never healed. Zelda would later jokingly blamed it on him feeling too fulfilled.
Legend is older, and has even more quests under his belt. He doesn’t tell most of his stories, he’s too tired and aching to get through a long lecture. But he is, for the first time in his life, content with where he is. He’s seen the whole world, seen every monster, every dungeon. And, in spite of not wanting the drama of becoming a legend (ha), was convinced to write a book of his adventures and exploits by Zelda and Ravio (under the condition that half of them were fake and that only he would know which were real). An addendum to Legend’s story adds that, in his final hours, he was visited by everyone important to him, one by one, living or ghost, enemy or ally. No one knew if this addendum was true or not, considering the rest of the book. The last words, added by Zelda and Ravio who witnessed it, spoke of his contentment.
Despite the struggles that come with travel and adventuring, all of them enjoyed it. They could fight together, explore together, see each other. They played music, sang, told stories for the months they spent together. They saw how different and grown each other. They saw how much they’ve changed since their last adventure together.
Time was the only one who hadn’t changed.

AHHHH! He lost his EYE in the war! AHHHH!
I am perfectly normal about your last comic. I swear. Very normal. Just...not at all sobbing and emotional over it. You should know that. Definitely. ;_;
It's so good and so sad!
Yep ;u;
Glad you liked it tho!
Take the broken mask drawing as symbolism (?). A piece of him is now forever a part of Mask, and there's no taking that back.
There are many protrayals of Fierce Deity out there, but I like to think he ain't necessarily mean (quite the contrary), just a bit out of touch with how hylians work and feel. Fierce Deity deemed some things necessary for Mask's survival and well being, and not necessarily all of them were free of consequences. It was done with good intentions tho. If only he bothered to explain/tell Mask that...
Tormenting Twilight a bit is fun sometimes too ksksks

Names have power some names destiny can’t let turn into myths
I am in a mood so legend gets it again
Fanfic prompt :
We have no idea where cadence of Hyrule fits in timeline wise as it potentially can be whatever
But since link is a toon in that one I kinda want him to be a lil teen still when it happened
So I had this very horrifying thought
Since link can die literally endlessly
What if he can’t truly age as well like every few decades he will come back being a lil guy and it will literally not stop
Any death brings him back to being a lil teen a few years short of his age during linked universe
Be it a quick death or a very slow one
Even dying from old age won’t be his end
But that gets even more horrifying when we consider that the theory of which link is in link between worlds
Because the Zelda from the original games canonically has a different appearance

But the Zelda in link between worlds also looks different initially which made many people wonder what timeline this games belong in
So what if link to the past along with oracle of seasons and link between worlds have literal decades between eachother
Because that way the Zelda kidnappings will not even be ridiculous
Like link to the past was one Zelda
The final oracle game Zelda was a descendant of the other who was kidnapped much later
and link between worlds was the descendant of the descendant
And fable is actually the great granddaughter of the first Zelda that legend met
(If we go with the legend is related to Zelda theory it gets even worse because that is his great grand niece.. the angst)
And he is centuries old and Ravio had no clue that he moved in with a centuries old being
Because that would be hilarious if Ravio is like 20 at most while legend barely remembers the joy of being just twenty
A romance between them would literally be both the worst most painful thing because legend knows Ravio will leave as well one day
And they will never truly grow old together and he will just be alone again after a few decades
And the most bitter sweet thing in existence
As legend cherishes every moment he has with the people he still has left knowing that hylia will never let him leave this earth
He once wished to end his life because after Marin he thought he deserved to join the women he killed
Only to realize living on without this closure was the punishment he so desperately sought for
To live on and on knowing that he will never get to explain himself to all the people he lost
His uncle he will never get to tell how he felt
Marin he could never hope to explain why he killed her or even apologize to her for that
Zelda and her little girl are long gone he cannot tell them how much he loves their little girl how much he wants to protect the newest Zelda just as he protected all the others before her
Din and her troupe , Nayru , Ralph , styla and his fellow heroes from hytopia are long dead and….
He is the only one still there all alone
And that way all the Zelda re designs would make a tragic amount of sense like all of them being different people reminding him of his sister
Fable knowing that her great grand uncle has been hanging around since her birth and therefore relying on him despite not truly knowing him because he keeps a distance she tries to break so much
Ravio who has such happy memories who knows that his life with link is very very short, knowing that one day he will die as well yet link will never follow he will wait for all eternity but his husband will never come join him
The chain who eventually became more people legend loves so dearly who legend grew to love he knows that some he will never see because they are in different timelines.
Yet he has his very vast memories of all those people
Remembering fighting time and Wild for the title old man (he unfortunately didn’t win)
Remembering teasing twilight , skyand warriors (and totally losing half the time)
Remembering when wind wanted to sail with him claiming they were pirates together
Remembering so much fun and excitement
hoping that he will meet hyrule some day if he just keeps living on (knowing he has no real choice)
That there is one thing worth looking out for when he already lost so much over and over…
Yet hyrule never fell like rulie said it will instead of it falling down , somehow it persisted
And he met a new descendant the granddaughter of fable's
For all his hope of meeting hyrule ,he met echo instead
And a new adventure began for him once again
But for all his hopes where crushed he at least know that at least in this timeline another boy wouldn’t have to fight his battle
For as often as he fell in battle
Hylia brought him back to keep fighting them
His battles will not fall on another child this time
For he was the hero of legends
And legends never die

You'll See Me Again, Old Man
The shade stared at the boy before him, the boy he once knew, and again, this was their first meeting.
The boy did not recognize him.
The shade felt a pang in his chest, a feeling in which he thought was long gone, but no.
Seeing this boy looking at him with so much unfamiliarity was heartbreaking and the shade felt like he was dieing again.
What does he even say?
How will he start a conversation to the boy, no his descendent?
"I knew you once!" Those words accidentally slipped out of the shades mouth, he didn't mean it to happen, it just, hurts.
"Pardon?"
He saw the confused head tilt the boy did.
'You'll see me again, old man.'
Time remembered those last words Twi spoke before their departure.
Those words kept repeating in his mind, or what was left of it.
He was nothing more then a skeleton now, he was not who he was before, who he was during his journey with his boys.
He was alone, filled with regret and his boy...just seeing him like that, shattered him completely.
"Those eyes," Time spoke, his voice cracked with his lingering emotions, "they do not know me like I know you."
@ghosthoard I just had to write something about this!

This post is a little gory, reader discretion is advised.
Sky: Would you help me hide a body?
Hyrule: No I am not helping you! I want nothing to do with this!
Hyrule: [curious] ...But why? Is hiding bodies a fad in society now? Dang I'm really out of touch.
Sky: In what Hyrule is that a fad?!
Wild: [coughs]
—
Time: [sighing] I'm always cleaning up after you boys.
Sky: Wait Old man it was just—
Time: [pulling a trash bag from his adventure pouch] Where is it?
—
Wild: Hide...a body? O-Okay sure, I'll help you...
Wild: [muttering] Oh but not all of it I'm sure I could find uses for at least a few of the body parts...
—
Wind: [thumb up] Yeah of course! We'll just toss it into the ocean.
Sky: Ok but what if the Hyrule was landlocked...?
Wind: What if what? I'm a pirate.
Sky: Is that really how it works?!
—
Warriors: [polishing his sword] Huh? Dispose of a body? I can do that.
Sky: You...can?
Warriors: [glancing at his reflection] Eliminating traitors is a bit sporadic with its state funding so, I've had to get my hands dirty.
Sky: ...oh buddy.
—
Legend: Whose body is it? Under what circumstance? Who did the killing?
Legend: Sorry, I need to know if I should do it with enthusiasm or not.
Sky: [voice crack] Ledge...
Legend: Well I'm sorry, you keep telling me to find joys in life. I am trying!
—
Twilight: A-A body?! W-Why would you want me to...?!
Twilight: Wait, this one of Wild's pranks? Is he in that bush with his Sheikah Slate?
—
Four: [deadpan] Here's a list of ten efficient ways to dispose of a body.
Four: [very deadpan] It was my best self study project when I was a kid.
Four: [we all know this is Vio talking] The example body wasn't human, but that can't be too different.
Sky: [disturbed] ...No you can have it back. That question was just...
Warriors: [dutiful in improving his craft] Great can I have it?
—
Sky: Ok this is the last hypothetical! Between Wind's magic box thought experiment, Four's out of context question and this?! We're clearly really bad at these.
Twilight: Not sure what kind of responses you were expecting with that one to be honest.
Sky: ...You're right this one's on me.
~~~
Thanks for reading! Based off this
Sky got the fun hypothetical question from a friendly bar patron.
Wild coughed in that first one because with the restoration of his Hyrule ground in Hyrule field is being built on and, well, they are unearthing a lot of 100 year old skeletons. Not exactly hiding bodies, but...
Anyone up for some ANGST? >:) I started this when LU updated and didn’t get a chance to finish it til now.
Be aware! This can easily be read as major character death BUT I wanted to keep the end ambiguous enough that you could also assume there’s some hope left.
After all, fairies can bring people back to life if they act soon enough ;)
But please, keep yourselves safe <3
Other warnings: blood and injury
————————————————
There is blood everywhere.
It coats his hands, spreads in lazy puddles across the unforgiving ground, seeps from between his desperate, trembling fingers. Twilight presses down harder on the wound. More red escapes.
“‘M sorry,” Time mumbles.
All color has fled his face, making the blue of his eye unnaturally bright, his markings breathtakingly stark. He looks all at once like a being from another world, a deity to be feared, and a small child shivering in the face of something too strong, too terrible to defeat with weapons and courage.
That is not at all how he had looked mere moments ago. That is not how he had looked when he had detected substance in nothingness; when his response to Twilight’s strained query was to shove him aside so ferociously the rancher’s shoulder had collided with the stone wall.
There had been no words. Only a gasp, harsh and sharp as a blade. Then, the whisper of metal penetrating wind, the dull wet shunk of it lodging itself within something alive.
“An eye for an eye as they say,” that cursed lizard had purred as he placed a clawed paw upon Time’s back, holding him with the gentleness of a father embracing his child. And Time had not even had the presence of mind to pull away. He had merely stood there, rigid, as beads of crimson cascaded gracefully down the shattered plates of his armor, trailed down his lips.
“You took something of mine. Now I have taken something of yours.”
Twilight’s throat still throbs from the scream that had torn free. His body still aches from the force with which he had hurled himself at the beast, the force with which it had propelled him away.
“Pup, ‘m sorry.” Time is shaking his head now. His words trip over themselves in their haste to make it past his lips. “You shouldn’t have to take care of me.”
“Shut up,” Twilight chokes. His tears are so hot that they burn his cheeks. Emotions war within his stomach. He is furious, he is anguished; he is confounded, he is sympathetic. “Shut up, Time.” He drags in a breath, suffocates on a mouthful of salt. “You-you need to save your strength.”
He wants to scream. Why? Why did you do it? Why did you save me?
But he knows the answer. He can see it written across Time’s expression. It is in the way he smiles – a courageous upturn of the lips. It is in the way he lifts his hand, places it on Twilight’s cheek.
In the wake of his near-demise, he had thought he was a disappointment. That Time believed him a disgrace. It is only now, at the end, that he sees the love.
And the fear that that love propels forth.
“You need to leave.”
Twilight blinks away the tears, tries to screw up his face into something resembling a scowl.
“No. I’m not leaving you.”
“Twilight – ”
“No!” He shakes his head so hard liquid flies and his bangs slap his forehead. “No! If you think after that I’m just gonna run, you don’t know me at all!”
“But I do,” Time croaks. “I do know you. And that’s why I want you out of here. A-away from him.”
He leans forward, hissing through his teeth at the agony of the movement, expression brimming with urgency.
“Go, Twilight! Get the others out of here. Get to safety. You need to, you hav-have to…please.”
The last word drags itself forth, desperation weighing it down. Twilight lets the sound of it stab deep into his chest. He looks around at the scene through blurred eyes, at the shreds of bloodied tunic melding with the gore that splotches the ground, at the weapons fallen uselessly, at the too-pale fingers that clutch his, a band of gold embracing one of them.
The next sob takes his heart and wrenches it mercilessly from him.
“No.” It is a whisper, high-pitched from sorrow and lack of air. He collapses forward. His forehead comes to rest on Time’s chest and the hero’s gasping hiccups of breath fill his ears.
“No, no, no! This isn’t it!”
A hand comes up and cradles his head. Once firm, now it shakes with the weight of pain. Twilight breathes in sharply, tasting blood and salt, smelling mold and decay, sugary sweet fairy dust and warm hay and the soap Malon buys from Castle Town.
“I was supposed to change it. This was my chance to change it. To not let you die.”
“You’re not letting me die, pup,” Time whispers. “I chose this path. Do not burden yourself with guilt that is not yours.”
But you will. The thought rushes in, dreadful in its steadfast truth. You’ll burden yourself with the guilt of everything you couldn’t do. Everything you think you ought to have done. And it’ll turn you into a lonely, heartbroken wraith.
Time inhales and the sound is the desperate gasp of a dying man, shallow as the stream that flows through Ordon. Shallow and strangled and thin.
“Twilight…”
“No.”
It seems the only thing he can say now, the only word his trembling lips are capable of bringing forth. It is such a bitter utterance, a word that is all harsh edges and sharp angles. It cuts him on the way out.
“Don’t...”
Don’t speak, don’t waste your breath on a goodbye.
“Please, don’t...”
Don’t leave me here alone, don’t leave Malon, don’t leave…
“Twilight, I’m so…so…proud of you.”
Twilight squeezes his eyes closed. He has dreamt of hearing these words, clung to them as priceless treasure when he has. But hearing them now is a death sentence.
“I’m sorry,” he hiccups through teeth gritted so severely his jaw aches. “I’m so sorry.”
Time cradles him to his chest. His chin rests atop Twilight’s head. His touch is not the firm, unyielding thing it has always been. His body is no longer the unrelenting rampart, capable of being fallen upon in a storm of emotion and never once breaking. Already it has begun to lose its warmth.
“Oh, pup.” It is a murmur, a whisper as soft as a fairy’s departure. It echoes in Twilight’s ears.
It is louder than the pound of his heart, louder than the sobs that tear out of him with feral, merciless violence….
Louder even than the sound of the door, screaming on its hinges, as Time’s chest lowers and doesn’t rise again.
And when something small and determined and glowing with the deep emerald of the forest depths zips over his head and begins its dance with expert precision…he hardly knows it.
What do you think the process of becoming the Hero's Shade was like? Do you think Link experienced some terrible, final attack, and opened his eyes with a gasp that inhaled no air because he was no longer of this realm? That for a moment, he thought he'd survived?
Or do you think he knew as it happened? That he laid there, bleeding, regretting, wishing for change as everything faded away? And when the world came into view again he just knew the only way he'd be seeing the world again would be through the eyes of a restless spirit?
Did he watch his own body decay? Did he watch it slowly turn to bone, nature doing what it could to reclaim and bury him when no one else came to do it? (Did he wait for someone to find him?)
Why is his form, in the world where he trains his successor, so frightening in appearance? Did he choose to look partially skeletal to test his chosen's courage? Or was it because that was the last way he saw himself?
“A Song On Repeat”
Chapter 4
Brothers being brothers and a couple more secrets revealed
First | <<Previous | Next>>
Read On AO3
He woke up bundled in cloth against a warm chest and it took a while to draw his hazed mind from the dregs of sleep and recall what happened.
He very much was still a bunny.
He nudged the blankets away with his nose until he could squirm out, thankfully not held captive by the sleeping Rancher. The morning sun filled the small room--Legend normally roomed here with Hyrule, he wondered when Hyrule had left.
He noticed Twilight's wolf pelt in a heap across the room... He genuinely had no idea why.
He gingerly moved to the edge of the bed and tried to gauge the drop. The problem with bunnies were that they were extremely fragile, he'd learned dropping a rabbit just from holding them at your chest could kill them, or just injure them enough that euthanasia was the only option left.
He didn't know what was a safe distance to fall. He really didn't want to find out, but his bag was on the ground and he needed his moon pearl.
He could try... goddesses knew he wasn't fragile, no matter his form.
He moved closer to the edge and began to slide his front paws down the edge, trying to lessen the gap before he completely dropped--
A squeak escaped him as a hand the size of him pulled him back.
"Careful," Twilight rumbled, voice slightly strained. "Bed ain't that low to the ground, Apple."
He twisted and glared best he could at the Rancher, who'd apparently awoken just in time to stop him from jumping. He would've been fine! Maybe.
Twilight—who looked a little pale—leaned over the edge and set him on the ground before he sat up. "What're ya up to?"
He bound over to his bag and with some struggle, nudged it open and promptly stuck his body into it.
"Need help?"
He scrabbled further into his bag and out of pure memory of location his nose brushed the little pouch which held his moon pearl. Teeth catching the fabric, he kicked himself back out of the pouch and sort of flopped back onto the wooden floor.
Twilight made a noise that Legend would've hit him for. It was soft and almost cooing.
He glared up at him and tried to pull open the pouch.
"Oh Ordona help me," Twilight rasped, his voice too strained. Legend didn't deign that with a response.
He startled as the air shifted and Twilight's hand entered his vision. He darted back on instinct. Twilight slowed, then continued to open the pouch and let the pearl roll out onto the floor.
Legend darted and grabbed it, everything twisted and he found himself sitting back on the floor, bright pink bangs falling over his face.
Twilight laughed softly, knelt in front of him and he mussed his hair.
"Ge'off!" He shoved him, scowling and glaring.
Twilight just grinned. "You’re adorable, Kit."
"Don’t you start calling me that," Legend threatened, throwing that demented pinecone at Twilight. It hit his chin but he just laughed at him.
"Too late, you’re a little kit, a baby bunny, you’re smaller without that cute little tunic."
"Go die in a hole!"
Legend huffed, slumping into the floor and base of the bed, holding his moon pearl tightly.
"Alrigh'," Twilight said, smiling softly and he offered his hand. "Come on, it's probably about time for breakfast."
"You say a word about this and I will kill you."
"Aw, we both know ya ain't gonna do that. All bark and no bite, ehh, Kit?"
"I'll show you no bite!" He lunged at him and Twilight laughed, easily wrestling him off and pinning him to the ground. That didn't stop him from kicking his stomach and shoving him off.
Legend jabbed his fingers into Twilight's ribs.
He squawked. "You little rat!"
Legend managed to escape his returning attack and he ran out of the room, shutting the door behind him for the seconds it gave him on his escape.
"You want to go that way?" Twilight challenged.
Legend darted down the hall, far more agile than the rancher who pursued him. He slid down the stairs and called a good morning to Malon and Wild in the kitchen, both looked startled for the brief moment he saw them but next thing he was doing was jumping overtop the sofa and skittering to the side as Twilight tried to follow.
By the time Twilight landed and adjusted himself in the living area, Legend was darting out the door to the side.
"Catch me if you can, Rancher!" He taunted.
"Items?" He called back.
Legend debated with how he would handle a wolf chasing him and decided, fine, let's play cat and mouse--or rather, wolf and rabbit. He may lose a bit of sanity, but he trusted Twilight not to hurt him.
"Sure!"
And he was gone.
Running around the farm was easy, he was familiar with escaping responsibilities by doing so, and this wasn't too different.
He got out to the overgrown, unused training paddock as he saw Wolfie sprinting down the path from the house toward Legend.
He grinned.
The shadows--not darkness, not the twilight--wrapped around him and he was in full control of his transformation.
He heard the startled yelp from Wolfie as he ran back toward the stable through the untamed growth.
Legend slipped through a gap in the wooden walls, a gap Wolfie wouldn't be able to follow through, and he hid in a corner of crates and hay bundles, flopping down and letting the warm, content feeling simmer as he held onto it.
In time, he heard the doors open and he hid further behind the crates, deciding on his escape route.
"How did you even get away?" Twilight questioned aloud. "You just disappeared."
Oh if he wanted to do disappearance acts, Legend could accommodate.
"Kit."
His voice was far closer.
"You expectin' me t'move the hay ta find ya? It ain't that heavy."
Legend moved to the edges of the crates.
Twilight was about to grab one of the bundles and as he did, Legend darted out past his legs.
"What the--How?!"
Legend transformed back, the shadows guiding his form and he landed neatly atop the railing to keep the hay from falling down the stable.
He grinned at the rancher, knowing his magic--his innate magic that was normally left untouched--caused his eyes to gleam just a little.
"Ain't ever seen a shadow magic user before, Rancher?" He taunted.
Twilight stared at him, then his eyes sharpened. Legend had to give it to him, his lunges were fast. He yelped as they both fell to the first floor of the stable. They rolled and tumbled, he got up faster but Twilight stayed down as he instead dragged Legend back down by the ankle and tried to pin him.
Legend knew exactly what would be coming for him if Twilight successfully got him down, and he was not about to give in to that. Instead he fought him off, kicking and snarling.
Unluckily for him, even if he was a fairly decent boxer, Twilight was a certified wrestler.
"No--" Legend was cut off as he snapped his mouth shut to hold back the burst of laughter as Twilight danced his fingers under his ribs. He screeched and squirmed.
"Ge--het--stohohop!" He scrabbled at his hands but to little effect.
"Nuh-uh, you made me run 'round the whole farm, I'm gettin' my revenge."
"Don’t you--Forest! You--You jerk!" He screeched, forced laughter drawn from him.
"Jerk? Jerk?" Twilight sounded scandalized by the insult. “I ain’t a jerk, this is a jerk move."
Instead of going for his upper ribs, he went for where his ribs stopped and Legend made some embarrassing, high whine-squeal sound. He tried to kick him off, shoving at his chest and hands, but to his luck he was significantly weaker than the rancher.
Eventually, thank the three, Twilight let up and Legend whined weakly as he collapsed into the ground.
"Not even barking now," Twilight teased.
Legend glared at him, breathing heavily.
"I... I hate you," he wheezed.
Twilight just grinned. "No ya don't."
"Yes I do. Now get off me."
Twilight snorted. “A'ight."
He got off him and offered him a hand, Legend had half the mind to ignore it but he, stupidly, took it.
Twilight pulled him up and then over his shoulder. Legend yelped.
"Hey! No--"
"Boys."
Legend went quiet and he dropped his head so he could see past Twilight's hip to see Time in the doorway, amusement clear on his face.
"Yeah?" Twilight's grin was audible in his voice.
"Breakfast is ready. And the Champion wants to talk with the Collector."
The warm feeling from screwing around with Twilight had faded by the time breakfast was finished, and Legend was left alone with Wild in the kitchen to clean the dishes.
"So..." Wild began hesitantly. "What... do you know?"
Legend hummed softly. "I know about the spirits and their gifts, I know what happened by..." he thought carefully, picking through various memories of his own, "the fort. Hateno, I think. I know that. And how many years Calamity Ganon held Hyrule Castle under his power. I also know about how you got into Gerudo Town, and the snow and sand boots."
"You--" Wild stared at him, jaw agape. "Gerudo Town? How did that come up?"
Legend ground his teeth, clenching his jaw for a long moment. He redirected his gaze down at the dried plate in his hands while forcing his jaw to loosen before he spoke. "I didn't reset the moment the battle was over every time."
Wild frowned, he looked over at Legend with confusion in his eyes. "Huh?"
He inhaled carefully before he met his eyes. "It was a 72 hour cycle, Champ. Sometimes it was mid-battle that it happened, sometimes it was hours after, sometimes I was caught in shock to use the spell and..."
"And...?"
"There was so much blood," he murmured. "So… so much blood." Legend saw blood blurring the edges of his vision, he could almost see that forest and not the kitchen they were in. "Goddesses, there were a number of times it was just the two of us left and you—I… Neither of us were very… present. Sometimes you told me stupid stuff just to make me laugh, even if you were still crying. Like Gerudo Town and that guy you snagged those shoes from."
"Oh, sweet Hylia, Vet," Wild breathed, eyes wide. "I'm so sorry."
Legend just cracked a weak smile. "It's alright. Don’t worry."
"It's not alright--I'm sorry, but--We all know it."
He took the next dish to dry off, avoiding eye contact now. "It will be fine. I've dealt and handled worse."
"Doesn't mean you’re okay now."
"If I was, I don’t think I would've woken everyone up last night screaming."
Wild startled. "Rancher said he didn't think you really remembered."
"I may not have the Triforce of Wisdom but I'm not an idiot, I also have very good memory, thank you.”
A rhythmic knocking caught their attention.
“Sorry,” Four said immediately, “but, uhh, I was wondering if when you guys are done, if I can steal the Vet?”
“We’re almost done,” Legend said, gesturing to the almost empty basin of dishes. “Meet you…?”
“I’ll be out on the deck.” Four vanished around the corner.
“So…” Wild began. “About Gerudo Town—“
“I have so many outfits and we’re about the same size.” Legend shot him a smirk. “Remind me next time we’re at my house, I have a huge collection.”
Wild lit up.
Random Prompt I came up with:
the chain all have scars. Most have small marks from swords and attacks, some have burn marks, Time has the second most behind Wild, who’s obvious. But for most of them, their scars aren’t visible or debilitating. The only one who have actual disabilities from them are Time (his eye), Wild (if you count his memory impairment, but also his ear is a little messed up) and Sky (who probably has nerve damage from the lightning.
then the chain are casually walking around one of their castle towns, probably Warriors’. They go into a magic shop, and find an item which is basically a magical black light which shows which parts of the body have been healed by magic. Most people have a few- potions are common in almost all eras. Which is why the shopkeeper wasn’t expecting these 9 heroes to *glow* when he turned it on.
four, wind, and hyrule all have the least scars out of the chain. Still far more than the average person, though. A massive crescent is glowing through Wind’s shirt, hyrule is covered in scrapes and scars and the inside of his hands glow brightly from callouses and burns from magic, and faint lines shooting out in the four cardinal directions divide Four’s chest.
Sky, Warriors, and Twilight have even more than those three. Faint lines form a lichtenberg figure across Sky’s entire body. Warriors is covered in numerous scars, but his arm glows like a gauntlet from the massive burn scar on it, which spreads up to his shoulder and arm, and a single line orbits around his entire throat. Twilight’s scars, normally relegated only to his face, now stretch across his entire body, marking the damage his wolf form did to his body, and beneath that starburst-shaped burns cross the rest.
legend and Twilight are tied for second and third most. Legend’s scars are plentiful- cuts across his entire body, starburst burns around his legs and lower torso, and scars form rings around his fingers and wrist from when rings and bracelets created faint, undetectable magical burns. But the most notable one is the jagged line of Stigmata across his forehead, which Legend recognizes is from when he woke up from Koholint.
Time’s not any better- he has the same scars, the same injuries as the others, the “average” of all their injuries. But across his body, it seems like three forces were tearing at his body, creating jagged, cracked lines. On his left palm, golden, glowing marks show the damage of the triforce of courage, and the goddess Farore, which spread up to his shoulder and heart. On his right side, glowing purple lines originating from a scar through his palm mark the damage of Majora. And his face, normally covered in marks already, seems shattered by the glowing blue energy of the Fierce Deity.
and then Wild.
his entire body is glowing. Across his body, massive scars- burns from guardians, cuts from axes and swords, even cauterized gashes from ancient weapons. He had more than a dozen arrow injuries. A massive starburst emerged from his heart, the center going through both sides. And something behind his eyes- not his eyes themselves, but something behind them, is glowing as well. But beneath even that, Wild’s entire body hums and glows with faint energy, as if the Shrine didn’t just heal his injuries, but had to heal his entire body and existence.
And then there’s a crack as Legend shoots the magical item with the bow next to him, shattering it into a million pieces and ending the effect.
