My lukewarm tumblr opinion, medium heat irl opinion, is that people who can't write emails without chatgpt honestly need to stop and learn how to do it themselves because why are you relying on chatgpt for your professional/academic career

was thinking in the shower today abt the rise of gen ai in education amongst students with the cheating + no original assignments etc and it really is a symptom of the fast-paced, quick-fix dopamine-dependent society that we’re in. Doubled down with the fact that so much of what’s taught at school (maybe this is just a western thing, likely) just isn’t relevant, the wrong history is taught and the system wasn’t built to benefit everyone to begin with, but an indoctrination into understanding how long a workday was meant to be. kids see education as a barrier to getting what they want now instead of it being the literal process because now there’s something else that can do it for them. problem is how can a child without prior introduction discern what they actually need to take from their education.
anyway fuck generative ai. suck my dick i got flagged false positive at uni and sat in a room where two people told me that i wrote like ai and that it should be a compliment and not something I’m gonna have to constantly deal with. let’s go there with the argument about how NDs are likely disproportionately affected.

community college is so funny because half of the teachers are like "For this class you need to use lockdown browser for all quizzes and tests. You need to buy this 70 dollar textbook, and all papers turned in must be in APA format with a title page even if they're only 500 words long. I will not accept late assignments. Also you have a minimum of 4 assignments a week." and the other half are like "you don't need proctoring for the final exam I trust you. here's a download link to a pirated copy of the textbook. as long as your writing is coherent and demonstrates an understanding of the material I literally could not care less what format you use. I can't figure out how canvas works so I'm not giving you due dates, just make sure it's turned in before the grading period ends. your only weekly assignment is a forum post with a minimum of 100 words."
#my favorite teacher so far is still the film history professor I had in my first semester.#he was very old and didn't understand how canvas worked at all and sometimes had trouble opening a video file#but simultaneously he was tech literate enough to recommend we use firefox with an ad blocker#because whenever someone missed class and was like 'where do i go to find the movie' he'd be like 'use an ad blocker and google it'#he said the school made him stop emailing links to free movie sites because people would open them on chrome with no ad block#and there'd be borderline malware on them. like this guy gave me the impression he was like. a veteran movie pirate lol.#that class had barely any assignments. like there wasn't a final exam or anything.#he just wanted us to write a paragraph or so answering a few questions about the movies we watched. it was chill.#and i also learned a lot actually. like i didn't know what a nickelodeon was before then. or the Hays Code.#the movies were genuinely good. i never thought Id be that into old black and white movies or westerns for example but they actually slapped#some of them had really mature themes and i definitely started to understand the people on this website who are like#'if the only media you consume is children's media you should maybe branch out instead of calling steven universe problematic'#because a lot of the movies we watched depicted very 'problematic' things and were able to directly address them because they are for adults#(to clarify I didn't just like kids media before then. i just mean that it introduced me to some older stuff i didn't think I'd like)#(but i ended up liking a lot. it also made me realize that movies made today are kind of shit. which i also already knew)#(but it put it more into perspective because I have more to compare it to)#im rambling now. community college is pretty swag i enjoy it. and i do get along with the teachers who have crazy requirements too lol.

listen. i'm always happy whenever someone leaves a comment because they enjoy my writing. whether it's a quick "love it!" or a longer dissection of whatever they've read, it warms my heart that they took the time out of their day, however brief, to let me know that they liked my work. i don't consider myself entitled to receive comments for posting my work, which makes every single one i get a gift!
but comments like these (particularly ones that come from profiles that haven't posted fic and are aggregates of bookmarks*) really do leave a bad taste in my mouth:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so, let me spell some things out for anyone who may be unaware:
I don't write for you.
I write for myself.
I am writing fic for free in the little spare time i have.
You are not entitled to my (or anyone else's) work
i haven't posted fic to ao3 since literally january of this year. i also wish i were posting fic more frequently, trust me. the only thing worse than writing is not writing. but asking "where's the rest????" and "part 2????" only activates my spite response to not post. you'll get updates to fics when you get updates. writing fanfiction is a hobby for me. i do it for fun. but i also take my craft (writing) very seriously. i want to write a good, compelling story and i take great care in the writing process. it's laborious to begin with, and on top of that, i am a meticulous planner. it takes me much longer to write a fic than it does for you to read it -- yes, even for the short ones and smutfics!
it's the famous "pick two: high quality, cheap, and fast", and unfortunately for all of us, if you want my "not bad"-writing and have it also remain free, then you're gonna have to be patient.
*i'm not saying that this is an incorrect way to use ao3. if you're using ao3 as a place to keep track of the fics you like, that's a valid way to use the site, and not what i'm mad about. it's the entitlement.

So if you ever are like "why the fuck can't I do my goal X activitiy after studying Y months/years?"
I encourage you to sit down and determine roughly:
1. How many hours you've actually studied in those months/years? (and if it's nowhere near the hours recommended for say a goal of reading or speaking at B2 level then perhaps consider planning to increase study hours)
2. How much of your study plan is spent focusing on practicing the goal skills? (If your goal is to speak to people at a B2 level, and you have never practiced speaking - or even shadowing after a dialogue - then perhaps change your study plan to Include some speaking related practice).
#rant#study plan#study issues#so many examples of item 2 - such as studying japanese to watch anime but you NEVER practice watching anime...#or wanting to listen to audiobooks but you never practice listening to audiobooks...#or you want to write work emails well but never practice writing them...#and for 1 - so many intermediate learners KEY issue is they just THINK they should be upper intermediate or advanced level#but only studied a beginner amount of hours... and dont realize they need to study MORE hours to get to the level they want.#(aka my biggest issue when studying)#i was on r/learnjapanese and someone was asking why after years of study they couldnt understand tv shows#and... i felt the same after 3 years studying (until i realized i probably studied less than 200 hours total... which was barely#a drop in the bucket of how much i actually needed to study to achieve my goals)#if you want to use an hours estimate to study. look up FSI estimates to learn a language#and multiply the weeks estimate by 40 hours (thats the class hours and expected self study FSI expects per week)#and you'll see the FSI Estimate for B2 skills#there are other online 'time to study a language' estimates so if you find a better estimate please feel free to let me know#just like... if japanese takes 3520 hours for B2/N2 skills... and a person has studied 200 to hell even 600 hours... no wonder they cant#understand shows.#but if you've studied a decent number of hours then#the problem may be just you need to make sure your study plan includes time spent#working on the skill you WANT to do.

my problem w AI has nothing to do w art theft or “lazy” art or really anything about art, but the way i see it advertised, the practical applications for school and work or just “what can i cook with these ingredients” it seems to me like if you really use this shit to write or communicate effectively or create something out of nothing then ur wasting an opportunity to get better at any of those things. if you really can’t write a proper email why are you in this fucking office jobbbbb . SUMMARIZING IS A SKILL… COMMUNICATING IS A SKILL… asking a robot to simplify everything for you must be miserable couldnt be me

I cried because of my political powerlessness in the UK. Then I thought to myself, it was what they wanted me to feel.
In the midst of my tears, I'm writing letters to my MPs ;)

My stance on AI is not that art or writing inherently must be made by a human to be soulful or good or whatnot but that the point of being alive is not to avoid doing anything ever.
#personally PERSONALLY I understand on the conceptual level why people want to automate hard tasks BUT on an emotional level on an intrinsic#‘this is how I view the world level’ i just have never understood the human races fascination with making life less life per life#the experience is the point? if a point could ever even claim to be made?#ik there’s this inclination towards skipping what we view as unpleasant like oh I’ll drive instead of walking to save time#oh I’ll just send a text instead of talkin To someone#and to a degree these innovations allow us to do things we wouldn’t be able to in some circumstances#such as reaching a store before it closes by car I#that you wouldn’t be able to get to by foot in the same time#BUT I firmly believe if the option exists to do something the slow way then it’s going to be better#even if you don’t enjoy the process of it like you do other things like hobbies or joys#doing things that are boring and tedious and a little painful are GOOD FOR YOU#LEARN TO EXIST IN DISCOMFORT AND BOREDOM AND REVEL IN MUNDANITY LIFE IS NOT JUST ABOUT DOING ENJOYABLE THINGS#An equal amount of life is doing things that are neutral or negative and idk why people seem not to be able to stand that? it’s beautiful#it’s life it’s living it’s just as good as whatever it is you do for joy just in a different manner#anyways AI is like the worst perversion of that like yeah I don’t want to write my emails but I’m going g to do it anyways it’s my life and#I want to live it fully! YES EVRN THE BORING PARTS YES EVEN THE EMAILS THE WRETCHED EMAILS#anyways don’t let a ghost of a computer steal your life write your own emails

sure, we can laugh he thinks he's gonna get Greenland somehow, Panama Canal, etc
But also remember that, among many other things in its near thousand pages, Project 2025 specifically outlines and plans for everything up to boots-on-the-ground resource wars even against established allies.
And it maybe puts a bit more stark context to how he's already gunning for this shit before he's even sworn in.
Cheers! 🍻
