Contextual Studies Lecture 1 - Designing for the Anthropocene
Fred Hubble was the lecturer and he spoke about climate change and we discussed how it affects our planet and how we are polluting the wildlife and nature. The actions we take we don’t see how it will affect and this can make a huge change in nature and how we live. Climate change has a massive effect on carbon dioxide levels. However, there are campaigns and brands who have worked together to save the ocean from waste plastic. There are brands such as Gstar, Adidas and in order to get their collections popular, they worked with famous artists such as Pharrell Williams. This was part of the clean-up operation.

Lecture 3 Reflection
(15 January 2019)
In this lecture, I learned about the types of instructional technologies and the benefits and limitation of using instructional software. As usual, the lecture started off the class by stating the definition of instructional software, the types of instructional systems and products and also the overview of instructional software.
Besides that, we were given a 30 minute task to plan a lesson within our group members. There are several things that needs to be included in the lesson which are a fairly interesting lesson, age group, learning theory and software usage. This lesson needs to be presented after 30 minutes. After a brief discussion, my group and I have come to a consensus with a lesson plan that will be stated below:
Topic: How to preserve the environment
Age group: 10 – 12 years old
Learning theory: Behaviorist theory
Software usage:
Kahoot: A platform used as a quiz. Students with the highest point will earn a prize.
A recycling machine: This machine collects recyclable items. Each students who donated their recyclable items will be rewarded with points that will be registered into the card systems. At the same time, they are also able to learn about some interesting environmental facts when they donate their items.
It was really interesting to watch other groups present some interesting topics such as sex education, self-defense, ways to make Malaysian’s onde-onde and others.
As a future educator, I had learned that there are both benefits and limitations for any instructional software. Therefore, choosing suitable instructional software is really important for the content that will be taught in class.

Module 3 Raw Notes ~ Lec 3.1
Is/Ought is a concept brought about by David Hume.
In an irrational mood, an individual may mistake what 'is' as something 'ought' to be.
They may not be able to distinguish between what is correct and what they perceive as correct
Train delay scenario
What would you do when the train breaks down and delays are incurred? - perhaps find the exit
Not sure where this is going
Assessment of risk is dependent on an individual's past experience and intuition
Statistically, people cannot accurately estimate events with a low probability occurrence
Decisions are also dependent on whether there is a high impact consequence
Taking the risk, even when the probability is high and no consequence had occurred is just as bad as taking the risk and producing a consequence/ impact during failure
- e.g. not using a seatbelt and avoiding an accident is still illegal
- The media sensationalizes the consequence and the risk is still present but not invisible
- This is the case for the BF Skinner pigeon training experiment. A good outcome is usually generated by luck because risk is always present. Habit is therefore created by successful repetition of an action or decision with no consequence however this does not always quantify the decision as correct or safe
Terrorism
Number of Australians dying overseas due to terrorism is less than 200 – not as drastic as perceived by the media
Governments have taken advantage of this obsession with terror to pass legislation that have more oppressive consequences than the terrorism act itself on a long term regard.
Mitigation of risks
Use a risk matrix/register - these are arbitrary and subjective
Richard Fineman – research him
He was transparent about the risks involved with a launch (NASA) - they launched at low temperatures which raised the risk of failure because the O-ring is brittle at that temperature
Top managers in the hierarchy of a company will have a less severe understanding of risk involved with failure (e.g. 1 in 1000000 chance of failure)
Engineers working with the details (lower in the pyramid) will have a higher understanding of failure (e.g. perhaps 1 in 10)
How to develop a genuine risk register?
Use a lot of people with diverse mindsets
You can ask a third party to help you but as all humans are self-interested, there is still bias involved
Compliance
This is a useful tool for the prevention of unsatisfactory outcomes
Sets the minimum standard for satisfaction but there is no absolute certainty that this standard will correctly apply to all situations
Read about: Sundance Resource Limited – Republic of Congo
Yezhov – head of police for Stalin during the Great Purge
Better that ten innocent people should suffer than one spy get away – what is the significance of this quote
Bits of Information
Similar to bits of security
Generated by a 1 or 0
To do:
Update table to advise a company of the budget and minimum security bits to secure against different hacker types (hacker, small company, middle, large, Intelligence organisation)

Lecture3
- Difference between what is, and what should be
- Risk is invisible, and humans are bad at assessing
- Compliance: checkboxes, could help, but not all.
- Approaches to dealing with risks:
Prevention
Limit
Passing the risk to a 3rd party
Wear
- Bits of information:
Venus: Women tell the truth, men lie
Mars: Women from Mars lie, men tell the truth
You can’t tell the gender and where they from by their appearance
Questions:
Ask one question to tell the gender
Ask one question to tell where it from
Ask one question to tell both
Solutions:
Ask whether “it” is from Mars or not: all the men will answer YES, all the women will answer NO
Ask whether “it” is a man or a woman: all the Venusians will answer NO, all the Martians will answer YES
Impossible to answer, as the answer is only 1 bit (2 possible answers), while the question is a 2-bit question (there’re 4 possible answers).
- Key problem: If every pair of people has a key, then when there’re lots of people, the number of keys might explode.
Solution: Public Key: All the others use the public key to encode the text, and only the private key can decode it.
- RSA (short for 3 persons’ name): is an algorithm to generate the public and private key

Lecture #3: Materials & Textures in Nine
Tools and Techniques (Shape, Size, Texture)
We were asked to create a 27cmx27cm square frame inside using a drawing paper of 29cmx29cm. We divided this 27cmx27cm square into 9 equal parts. In each of the squares, we placed 9 items of different textures that we found at home.
I created a composition paying attention to the density of these textures and the harmony of the colors. Then we passed this composition, which we created by drawing a frame of the same dimensions, on paper. The purpose of us doing this was to be able to feel and understand the textures on the drawing. Thus, we discovered the textures better by looking at their density, color, and height.

Lecture3 - Gender Discussions
1. Inequality index is still the imbalance in the world. Gender is an important part of identity.
2. The gender binary is being deconstructed.
3. Gender and linguistics are closely linked: In many languages - such as German or French for instance - nouns are directly gendered. Even in the English language, nouns which are feminine tend to have negative connotations – e.g ‘buddy’ vs. ‘sissy’. Some other examples could be ‘mistress’, ‘madam’, ‘spinster’ or ‘hussy’.Gender can also be a factor in the kind of vocabulary we use.
4. The Male GazeBritish feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey is best known for her 1975 essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema in which she discusses the concept of ‘the male gaze’.She argues that in many cinematic examples from the 1950s and 60s, the viewer was put into a masculine position, and the female characters are shown with a ‘to-be-looked-at-ness’. She also believes that many of the plots and characters were founded on the institution of patriarchy.
5. Gender performativityAmerican philosopher and gender theorist Judith Butler wrote an influential book in 1990 called Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity. In the text, she introduces the idea of ‘gender performativity’.It is based on the notion that gender is a social construct, and it’s important to note that she does not see gender as a performance (something that starts and ends) but rather as performative.
6. Gender is socially constructed
