It's done! The outline for—
Tumblr media
—is below the cut. The goal of this project is to explore the following phenomena with as much context and nuance as I can manage, tracing our history over the past 15 years:
What about us, and what about Dan and Phil, drew in and continues to draw in a very specific audience. If they are a ranch metaphor, we are a pizza metaphor 🥗🍕🫶🏻
Why we were Like That™, by which I mean so parasocially invested in them that we became, at times, the most annoying people on the internet. Much of that reputation is undeserved, and the videos on the phandom to date have been strongly negative. So, uh, I guess I'm going to put my face on camera and (mostly) defend us.
Reblog, share in your Discord servers, reply, or send me messages/anon asks with feedback or resources if you have any! Especially if your experience being in this fandom community has been dramatically different from mine. There are TIT spoilers near the end of the outline, but I'm not tagging because certain individuals seem to be lurking over there. Thank you!
Chapters:
Tumblr media
Full outline:
introduction
cold open
felt personally attacked by jonathan haidt's last press tour
showed up to the phrenaissance 11 months late
had an unexpectedly strong response to their new content, needed to find out why
what the hell are we doing here?
- phenomenology (academics are professionally insufferable) - research question 1: what drew the audience in? - research question 2: why were we Like That™?
what we're NOT doing here
- a strict content analysis or "wow we sucked" video - providing sources for things best left uncirculated, thank you
reflexivity (personal biases)
- american zillennial in public health - in the youtube audience by spring 2010 - lurking in the phandom on tumblr 2013-2015, back* since 2019 - fan behavior i did and did not engage in
(----): truly necessary background information, i swear
(pop) cultural trends, tech, and their intersection
- nerd/geek identity and the first online weirdos - broadcast tv & the music industry vs the internet - defining "emo" - blogging & vlogging - early internet comedy
broader social/economic trends
- so the U.S. economy collapsed in 2007 - a decade that sucked except for rom-coms and square enix games - the flip/slide phone + digital camera + mp3 player loadout
(05-8): early youtube and early phil
youtube: a great video uploader without a clear purpose
the content on the website
- crossposts, corporations, and creative/social outlets - omg guys it's amazing phil - contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: justin bieber
the audience of "early adopters"
contemporary social media sites and forums
(2009): origin story
a wild dan appears… in the comments
the global constant that is teenagers being messy online
daring my old school district to sue me
- "one town's war on gay teens" (literal rolling stone headline!) - epidemiology 101: rates of… ugh… "unaliving" oneself - ways kids cope when it seems no adults will help them
the earliest days of dan & phil
- hello internet + pinof - a chronically overexamined timeline - file deleted ---* so how big WAS the audience at the time? ---* acceptable funny/edgy language was just different
contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: lucas cruikshank
omg it's meeeeeee
- how amy & friends were using youtube - ways i was just destined to end up here - being in social environments with peers 3-6 years older
(2010): is it "twenty-ten" or "two thousand ten?"
youtube is a platform about to explode in popularity
- the algorithm before it was The Algorithm™, lost site features - let's take a trip through the wayback machine :3c - actual dan & phil content in 2010 - the green brothers found vidcon - contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: darren criss
social media: also about to explode in popularity
- facebook was cool at the time, believe it or not - law of equivalent exchange: 2010 amy cringe compilation - the birth of instagram and pinterest - youtube slash livejournal (the first phanfics… sort of) - shockfic and its place in the overton window
the beginning of "the great rewiring" as haidt calls it
- ways social media is about to dramatically change - third spaces become online spaces - confounding variable: changing expectations of teens
(2011): the end of an era, the start of an age
a very long tangent on fandom and pop culture
cultural exchange
counterculture and teenagers as concepts
the first british invasion: the 1960s
- beatlemania and its descendents - moral panic about the virtue of tween/teen girls - tv/film/fashion trends being imported from the uk - in parallel, star trek births the modern fandom

- massive growth in smartphone ownership 2011-2015 - things one might do on mobile one might not do on desktop - non-online ways smartphones changed being a youth™
what is tumblr and why is my child using it
- how the site is meant to work - fandom, memes, aesthetics, and SOME public figures - want to be anxious and depressed in peace? come to tumblr - this site seems a little……… gay ---* tumblr's very queer, very neurodiverse userbase ---* legacy media representation in 2012: bad! ---* actual academic research on tumblr users (yes, it exists) - the tumblr experience for non-native english speakers
amy becomes a vibrating mass of panic and paranoia

Short question: Do you have any tips for turning "If you knew anything about the Holocaust, you'd know why we need Israel" from a conversation ender into a conversation starter? Longer context: I find it important, as a Jewish anarchist and anti-Zionist, to try my best to have hard conversations about safety and perceptions thereof with irl Jewish family, friends, and acquaintances. My politics make me an outlier in these spaces, as does my status as a convert, which I choose to be quite open about. I cannot begin to estimate how many people self-righteously cut short these conversations with "If you knew ANYTHING about [the Holocaust/antisemitism/generational trauma] you'd UNDERSTAND why we REALLY NEED [medinat yisrael/any jewish ethnostate/colonial zionism]". I'm under no illusion that I'm a scholar on the history of antisemitism or Jewish living patterns or the Levant or anything. I've taken one college-level course on Nazi Germany policy and beaucratic shit, but it intentionally dealt minimally with the pointy end of the death machine. I've taken two year-long Judaism 101 style classes, which of course dealt with the history of the Jewish people. I read relevant nonfiction, both books and essays. I also understand that being a convert gives me a very different personal history with the intergenerational trauma, and I want to be super respect of that. So overall I consider myself reasonably well informed, but I obviously can't respond to them with the "I know more than you" card. (Not that that would be a good way to handle it, but still.) I want to talk to people, who use this specific argumentative tactic, about what it means that our very legitimate traumas as a people led us to the point of producing our own little ethnostate (with a number of very paternalistic inputs from European nations of course). About how the shoah shaped modern zionism. About the biblical Joshua vs the archaeological evidence of that time period and what it means for our national/societal identities. About the haftarah in which israel demands a king and whether being just like the other nations has ever been lastingly good for literally anyone. But unanimously, people look at me like I'm the fool for going "yeah actually let's talk about history and fear and trauma and cultural legacies and (re)interpretation" instead of like. Applauding their sick burn about how clearly naïve I am. Do you, a Real Actual Holocaust Scholar, have a way to turn that "obviously you know nothing" accusation into a productive conversation? If so can you please share because I am losing my mind over here.
NOTE TO READERS: I'm going to speak frankly about stuff that goes down in the American Jewish community, as a lifelong and active MEMBER of that community. This is not fodder for any of your anti-Semitic bullshit and I'm deeply uninterested in Gentile Thoughts on what I'm about to write. You do not have my consent to weaponize anything you read here against Jews you encounter here, or elsewhere, regardless of their politics.
Oof ok. I have some answers, but you may not like them. First, politics within the Jewish community. I love that you're a convert and I respect your dedication and hard work; I'm sure you know much more about the Jewish faith than I do. However, as you know, Judaism is both a religion and an ethnic group/identity. And there are a lot of religious and secular Jews who chafe at the feeling of being told how they should and should not feel about Israel by a convert who does not share our heritage and experience of intergenerational trauma. Especially if they're over 60.
I also want to tell you that when members of our community, particularly individuals over 60 years of age, have their minds made up about Israel, Zionism, etc, they're not interested in valid historical takes from experts. Their minds are made up and they reject any information counter to their stance, and attack the person providing them with the info. I've been personally attacked here and elsewhere by our people for bringing up historical and archaeological issues which run counter to their arguments. I've had my intellect and education and abilities mocked, while I'm out here voluntarily traumatizing myself through my dedication to the study of Holocaust history.
Another issue, is that Jewish history is deeply interwoven in our observance, faith, and heritage. This gives individuals involved at various levels with the Jewish community the idea that they Know Jewish History. They don't. They know a version of the Jewish past specifically constructed by and within our communal spaces; see Zakhor by Hayim Yerushalmi. And a lot of them, especially if they're a man over 50 and you're a woman who reads as young, get real nasty if you assert vaster and more accurate knowledge. It's kind of similar to how people in our communities think that they Know Holocaust History because they read Night and Grandma was a survivor. But those things don't mean that they know Holocaust history--it means they've engaged with two first-hand accounts.
I'm going to advise you to stop trying with these people. I know that's not the answer you want, and I'm really sorry about that. But, the types of people you're engaging with are so deeply traumatized and set in their own defensive views, that they would never listen to me, a Jewish granddaughter of Holocaust refugees and academically trained Holocaust historian. And if they won't listen to me, they sure as hell won't listen to someone they view as an outsider to the Jewish historical experience.
You'd be better off engaging members of your community who are still learning and figuring everything out, discussing your views as equals who are learning from one another, and putting your energies towards Jewish organizations who do not need convincing of your perspective.
ETA: this is something that will only likely change over the course of generations. the traumas of the holocaust are still fresh and living in the minds of survivors, their Baby Boomer children, and their millennial grandchildren; and I'm saying that as one of those millennial grandchildren. The trauma-induced view that Israel is our shield against the Holocaust ever happening again will not change because of anything you or I might say. It will only begin to fade into new paradigms of thought when we are many more years removed from living memory of those events.

If you go into your social menu and click on a character, you can also see which of their events you have/haven't seen, and if you want to see the requirements for a heart event, you can click on said event for it to list the requirements.
Event Music Volume — allows you to set different volume levels for the music between heart events and regular gameplay. Never again miss out on hearing a concert cutscene because you had turned the music down for your own soundtrack.
Farmers Market — turns the grange displays at the Stardew Valley Fair into a little farmers market.
FarmHouse Lights — Lets you have Light at night in your home without placing torches. Island house included as option.
Farmhouse Visits — allows you to set a configurable chance for NPCs to decide to visit your farmer.
Ferngill Fashion Festival for 1.6 — adds in a series of heart events for Emily and a new festival.
Forager's Nooks and Crannies — Adds new maps to the valley that unlock as you upgrade your foraging skill and/or befriends certain NPCs.
Fruit Trees Unblocked — Brings some of the unblocking functionality from Fruit Tree Tweaks to 1.6
Generic Mod Config Menu — sets up a GUI in-game to allow you to set up config files for your mods.
The Geology Mod (Update 1.6) — Adds new nods, minerals, and weapons to the game.
Greenhouse Sprinklers — allows you to eventually purchase overhead sprinklers from Robin so that you can maximize your growing space.
Grandpa's Farm — optional farm map available with Stardew Valley Expanded.
Growing Valley - Child NPCs — See your toddlers grow up into walking, talking children who take after your spouse! A content pack for LittleNPCs.
Happy Birthday — gives your farmer an actual birthday in-game. NPCs will wish you a happy birthday and give you gifts. Some people will even throw you a party!
Happy Home Designer — overhauls the catalogs and integrates Alternative Texture packs.
Harvest Seeds - Continued — Gives a configurable chance for crops to drop seeds when harvesting.
Heart Event Helper — shows how dialogue options impact friendship.
HxW Custom Buildings All in One Pack — All HxW Custom Building mods packaged into one highly customizable mod with BONUS new option to change the interior of your slime hutch to one of our custom building interiors! Choose which buildings you want to enable and whether they come pre-furnished using Generic Mod Config Menu.
HxW Mixology 101 — Adds over fifty new recipes and crafting items focused on craft cocktails, mocktails and mixology.
It's My Farm I'll Pass Out If I Want To — if you pass out on your farm, you no longer get hauled off to Harvey's. Allows you to configure consequences for passing out at home.
Integrated Minecarts — adds additional minecarts around the vanilla map and to different expansions where applicable.
It's Still You — the mirror in the bathhouse quotes an iconic line from Undertale.
Jump Over — Allows you to jump over things, like fences.
Last Day to Plant — puts up a little message on the last day you can plant something and still be able to harvest it.
Legacy Cellar — Spacious cellar expansion, with a large main floor, plus a lower level for indoor planting
Legacy Coops and Barns — More spaciously laid out coops and barns for our animals, with a dedicated area for produce machines or storage once fully upgraded
Legacy Farm — Large farm map with it's own quarry, waterfall cave to replenish your energy, farm forest with foragables and re-spawnable hardwood stumps, a vineyard and winery/storage shed area and a Junimo treehouse with warps to the Mountain, Beach, Desert, Ginger Island, Ridgeside Village and East Scarp
Legacy Farm Cave — Three-story farm cave, created for the Legacy Farm, though it should be compatible with most other farm maps! Includes foragables, planting areas, a hot spring to replenish your energy, a treasure chest to help you in the early game, and your very own small quarry. Works like a greenhouse and you can use casks here
Legacy Farm Progression Unlocks — Adds progression-based locks to ItsLunatyx's Legacy Farm with configurable added large debris and an optional (temporary) barrier to the winery.
Legacy Greenhouse — Large Greenhouse, originally created for my Legacy Farm but should be compatible with most farm maps. Three large planting rooms, a large basement, and a garden area to have fun with
Little NPCs — Turns your children into little NPCs. Requires ContentPatcher. [Requirement for ARV Kids]
Light Radius — Make in-game furniture and object lights cover a larger radius.
Little Red School House — adds a quest line to restore a school house so that Penny no longer teaches in the library.
Livestock Bazaar — Displays animals for sale at Marnie (including modded animals) in a grid and allows you to choose which skin it has, as opposed to the game randomly assigning one. (Note, if you are using a mod that also changes how the buy/sell menu works, it will interfere with this interface. If you previously used Self-serve, then switch over to Self-checkout, as it is compatible.)
Log Menu — Allows you to bring up a log of the last 50 lines of dialogue, useful for when you accidentally click through.
Lookup Anything — for those of us tired of constantly using the wiki (or who have so many mods the wiki is no longer accurate), this pulls information from in-game.
Lost Book Menu — Adds a menu to the library that shows you all of the lost books you've restored to more easily find what you want to read.
Lovely Digspot — changes the appearance of digspots to make them easier to see. I'm blind as a bat and this is INCREDIBLY helpful.
Luau to Feast of the Sun — Re-themes the Luau to a Summer Solstice feast.
Lumisteria Progress Toward Perfection — Receive letters and gifts (with bits of added lore) as you progress towards perfection.
The Masterpost for all of the mods is located here.

Random thought that's probably unoriginal but hay it's 4 AM and I've been thinking about this for awhile. Ever find it funny the comparison between Oswald's and Mickey's relationship with Walt Disney's and Ub Iwerks'? It's a funny parallel that doesn't get talked about much largely because people seem to forget Ub Iwerks (ironic). WARNING: RANT!
Wanna note this rant is by a person who hasn't properly played Epic Mickey 1, 2, and 2.5 (power of illusion) so sorry if I get some stuff wrong yet I know the premise and key story points. Anyways:
For those who don't know Ub Iwerks was longtime friend of Walt Disney and basically the man who would lead the Walt Disney Studios into being what it is today Ub's technical influence on the animations shouldn't be dismissed at all. The man is responsible for some of the most iconic stuff in Disney history like the colors of Dumbo's "Pink Elephants" musical number, a photography technique for the rain in Bambi, creation of a specialized Xerox machine allowing for drawings to go directly onto cels for 101 dalmatians, and he himself earned an Oscar for his efforts in bringing the mix of 2D and live action together in Mary Poppins. He even directed and worked on while going went uncredited for his creation of the wartime shorts that saved Disney Studios during WW2. From there Ub went back to working on SFX after the war and was responsible for a lot of technical magicry behind Disneyland. Oh he also was responsible for some technical stuff behind Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" where he won another Oscar. So ya know the man had clear innovative talent. Despite this work Ub was a humble man and the only real reason why we know of most of his influence and his history with Walt is because of his grand daughter's own creation of a documentary involving him. Arguably Ub is the real creator of Mickey Mouse although that debate isn't what I wanna talk about and I'm neutral on the subject regarding it. What I wanna talk about is how Ub was always there from the very beginning, he and Walt were together way before Disney was the thing it is today and to get it there they bankrupted 3 different companies before finally making it big. Despite this Ub is mostly forgotten, his input on the legacy of Disney Studios being treated as nothing more than a footnote despite his feats. Ub stayed in the background being the hard working man and animator while Walt was a director and charismatic face. Ub did win two Oscars yet now and days he's severely undercutted and even forgotten despite making most of the original cartoons (dude made Plane Crazy aka Mickey's first cartoon in garage on a nothing budget FFS) and being one of the major catalyst for animation as we know it today.
One person gets all the credit and is the face of a company while the other who helped create it is usually left forgotten and only really known by a certain group of people who are more invested in history. Sound familiar? Of course Oswald isn't as important to Disney as Ub was (sorry Ozzie) yet I still find the parallel really cool and thematically fitting. In Epic Mickey there is a statue that parodies the famous one of Mickey and Walt holding hands, yet Oswald made it about himself instead with him replacing Mickey. This no doubt shows bitterness and resentment and the plot of Epic Mickey features the two eventually making up after it all. Not after ya know after Oswald gets mad and releases the blot and all that after rightfully getting pissed knowing his world was put in danger and his wife was basically killed by Mickey. Everything works out in the end thankfully and in the second game the two are on much better terms of course, in the first game Oswald also does make an attempt to be nice to Mickey because it's what Ortensia would of wanted.
Despite them reconnecting and acting as brothers I still feel like Oswald would hold some sorta grudge. If not for the fame stealing thing at least for the whole "you ruined my world and turned my wife to stone" thing. Oswald is petty enough to make faces at Mickey behind his back, no way is the rabbit THAT mature to forgive Mickey 100% for everything. Still, I feel like the only real way Oswald could ever get over the fact that Mickey took his spot as the mascot and face of Disney is by learning about Ub and his input. This is a neat little head canon I have that Oswald would embrace Ub as his creator instead of Walt. There would be something so fitting if Oswald learned he had two dads and his creation was a joint effort and actively learning about Ub and his contributions to Disney. I feel like instead of yearning for the attention his brother has he'd take a page out of Ub's book, he'd sit in the background and let the fame and popularity go to another despite the fact that there would be no popularity without him.
I made this rant because I was too lazy to draw this but: the idea of Oswald making a statue featuring him holding Ub Iwerks' hand as opposed to Walt's is such a cool and cute idea to me. It would not only show Oswald's acceptance of not being in the spotlight yet it would also honor the legacy of another who was "forgotten".
Anyways rant over, I'm excited for Epic Mickey rebrushed and can't wait to experience it and I probably need to sleep for classes i got later.

I am a gossip lover (work gossip, family gossip etc are all catnip to me) and celebrity gossip is no different because I am shameless. It is so interesting to figure out how it all works and the PR of it all. You can see who has good PR and listens to them, who is just a major human going through a mess (even if they have good PR), who is new to this etc. Watching JLo and Ben Affleck, I think their PR is waiting for a certain piece of news to drop and the moment it does, they will be hitting send on the divorce news.
Aside, but the initial handling of Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner's divorce was like...PR 101. Joe was all over the place in his messaging thinking that hit pieces would work while Sophie was deadly quiet for the most part, finished her job, got situated in NYC, and let legal channels do their job. When she did do an interview, it was detailed, touched on her personal and professional life, did not throw any mud, and let people in on how things went down. Like it is hard while it is happening, but you can see how a well-handled story can really help someone long-term.
oh DUDE you are speaking my language!!! I used to be a gossip junkie and while I am decidedly not anymore mostly because there are no legitimate, reliable sources of entertainment news anymore it's all ad-filled clickbait and cesspool forums like reddit and also I've grown up and realized I don't really have room in my mind to care about these people (other than Taylor lol), I still have an interest in pop culture in general. But ALSO, I love this kind of behind the scenes stuff and I LOOOOOOOVE looking at it from a PR/comms lens. Not just because it's, um, slightly professionally relevant to me, but also I just love strategy and words and whatnot.
The rumoured JLo/Ben divorce is PR 101, waiting for either a holiday weekend and/or a major news event to drop your bad news to get it buried in the news cycle. (A classic example is Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt's separation announcement I believe shortly after New Year's back in the day? Or was it July 4th? Anyway, something like that.) It's very likely JLo and Ben (assuming the rumours are true given the planted stories of late) are waiting for July 4th and/or... other news to drop theirs too. I feel like a lot of people are waiting for a certain announcement to drop all their stuff too LOL.
The Joe Jonas vs. Sophie Turner thing is such a good example too. It was total amateur hour vs. pro. He thought he could handle it like it was 2005 and he had the full Disney machine behind him but in 2023 where he is a legacy act with less cover and also celebrities' moves are so much more transparent to the public than they were 20 years ago, it just reeked of desperation. I'm glad the two of them have found a way to be cordial in public for the sake of their kids and that the shenanigans have ceased. I'm sure it was really hard on Sophie, but she played the long game and it worked brilliantly.
I could talk about the logistics/strategy side of this stuff for DAYS lol.

Business Venturing 101: Beginning and Endings
Business. It has changed so much over the years, but its a fundamental to life. You can see business in power struggles, trade, and the growth of the current day and age.
Tumblr media
Story time folks. I will tell a story that I hope someone learns from. I will tell it in a way that is a little bit anonymous and yet, its a hell of a story.
Background:
Here is a very theoretical question, where does a story begin? With me, my POV? But then when there is a lot of players to a story-everyone's background has some significance. Me, I am a 3rd generation Real Estate professional. My partner, a 2nd generation real estate professional. Partner is an investor at heart, usually taking care of family (or strangers like family). Our business partners, varying levels of experience and skills. The office leader had started at least 5 other real estate offices for other people after their grandparents got them into the business. Their partner was a 3rd generation professional as well. Between the family legacy, family and friend ties of their cohorts, and the experience-a helluva stage was set.
Story Time:
The office leader and partner quit/get fired and face the question of what do they do now? Remember, sometimes when one gets fired/quits-it is not always because they did a bad job. Sometimes the powers that be want you gone for their own nefarious reasons. So, decision time-Retire, get a job (not in the field), or DIY? An idea strikes, and pen goes to paper.
Friend to friend, we hear the idea out. It has merit. The leader has experience, hard to think it could fail. While that is always a possibility, when making a bet of any kind-if the odds seem to be in your favor from the aspects you can analyze-you make a decision based on that. My partner was agent #1, their first deal was massive and set the pace for the company. I was their first new licensee. I still remember picking out the office during the build out and imagining a hopeful future.
Looking back now, this was one of the first red flags but hindsight is 20/20. When building any type of company, a lot of work happens behind the scenes before the public really sees or hears anything. One of the first, and most important decisions, you make is-Staff. Even a small company starting out needs at least one body. You have: CEO (chief executive officer)-management of the organization, CFO (chief financial office)-treasurer, and Admin. We had our CEO, and what would come next is our CFO.
The CFO was someone we had been in business with before. While they did not do too bad, being a cog in a machine already running was different being a builder of a new machine. It takes a different person to be an employee compared to self employed for a company built from scratch. I raised concerns about this person not being a good fit, I was told that in the right environment I would see a "different side" to this person. I trusted the process, but should have raised my concerns louder. But it takes two to tango-as much I could have screamed my concerns-more people could have listened. A company could have the best plan, but the wrong crew could bode bad omens for actually being able to play that out to its full potential.
From Personal to Office Space. What are you doing, where are you doing it, and who are you doing it with. One of the next red flags is the attitude of going big or going home. Concept for the office was grander than the means for it. It was beautiful when it was said and done, but without being more mindful of the means it would take to upkeep it-its beauty was doomed to be lost. Following this idea of grandeur, more bodies came in for staff. While the attitude of "make it work" is one even I can get behind, we should have grown into that point.
All along the way, money was invested from various sources in various amounts. Some people invested more than we, some more than once, and eventually everyone was invited to invest. The investment pool being too big, if you don't think you can pay it back, becomes a danger to the company. Money is a lot of things to a lot of people. For us, it was giving our former friend a chance to live their dream unhindered, and to be able to finally bet on black like others had done and succeeded. For some it was their first investment after inheritance, others it was building their life up one small investment at a time. For the company, it was necessary to stay alive, but the company eventually dying would hurt so much more than they would realize.
What everyone at the company would soon learn to realize is that more money was being spent than was being produced. Money was being borrowed to compensate. The few who could see or knew about it spoke to the Manager and they would not listen. Trust in the wrong people, can take lifetimes of karma to pay back. Mistakes were made, but at our own cost to pay. Such is the risk to not only be self employed but also make your own company. Staff was not cut down, recruitment did not happen, and standards were not enforced. Worse than that, the manager would make promises then forget he made them and accuse you of being the bad guy for making him keep his WRITTEN word.
Before the wizard behind the curtain showed themselves to a farce in their final stand, some started to predict the end would come. Some even put a year and month on it. Somehow we kept going. Then bad management decided to remove themselves from responsibility. Making a joke at their last meeting, "If I was going to leave the company, I would disappear before it closed up!" Laughing out loud...and with that the owner's wife switched to her "real lifelong passion of haircare".
The entire time, and to this day, the owner blames "the market". Which is BULL. This group of agents has seen good and bad markets, and plenty of companies survive through it. You survive differently in every market but survival is possible. So with the old king gone and a puppet king in place, we try to salvage the situation. We faced our own options: stay for the couple of months we could, find a new space, join a new brokerage. A deal was attempted with a former devil brokerage we knew, but at the last minute a negotiation with the owner of the building came to light. The deal attempted to survive, but it could not.
With that, we faced our options again and decided we would together pull ourselves out of this. The former company's death date was chiseled into its headstone, assets sold off, and manager filed PERSONAL BANKRUPTCY to avoid having to pay any of the fines for their actions. Meanwhile, any staff member with assets is going into protective mode and investors are choosing how to respond to the events. Some are suing, as is their right. Some, risk losing assets to pay off debts. The timeline to make the next company better than ever started, not even leaving time to mourn or be angry. The manger thinks everything is fine, it was just a "bad business deal", and that they did NOTHING wrong. Aren't people just the nicest when you pay them to fan your ego?
To work your entire life, bring your family's legacy into it, and then just give everyone who ever cared about you-on a personal and professional level the bird...Wow. Some say their mind broke-but on some level they knew what they were doing. The question on everyone's upset mind is...Why? We may never have answers to that. The fallout from the decisions that led us to this point are still being felt. Even when the dust settles, the time to rebuild will start. Some assets and relationships will be lost forever, some are reparable.
Bring into that the confusing mess that is the regulations in the world of Real Estate. But we together can survive, Real Estate can endure, and Karma is a Witch with notebook. If I never see this manager again, it will be too soon. But I and my partner are just one of many dealing with this.
Lessons Learned:
When making any bet in life, think of the aspects you know of when considering if the odds are in your favor.
Experience, is important, but not all experience is good experience.
Who is on your team is as important as the plan for the team itself. It takes two to tango.
When running any business, the numbers dictate what you can or cant do.
Don't take someone else's money if you do not plan to be honest in your business. Their investment into your business could mean things for them you know not of.
Just because they are a friend, does not mean you cut your investment contact ANY slack. This is business, get your return or your money back.
Someone giving you bad business advice can you forever, someone messing up an investment you can bounce back from in a couple of years.
Treat people the way you want to be treated, the karmic earthquake that is the results of bad choices back to back-may never be able to recover from.
Every company recruits. There is no company out there that doesn't need to recruit staff or clients.
Having the wrong person in the wrong position is costly.
This is a story half a decade in the making, still in progress. As one chapter ends, another begins. The stress of all of this is probably the worst part of this. Even after everything is said and done, the side effects linger on. I hope someone learns to treat people better, or to be a smart investor.

(Disclaimer: When one writes with or about technology, one must be prepared for the work or the tool to be out of date or obsolete by the time anyone reads the writing. The systems I used for this project can still be used, but not in exactly the same way, nor are the interfaces the same. They are now considered legacy functions and my descriptions of them are as I used them, and as they behaved, at that time.) In a q&a after a reading I gave at George Mason University in the spring of 2023, I paraphrased a conversation I had with my brother earlier that year. We were on the stoop of his home in Bed-Stuy, talking about technology, about AI and ChatGPT in particular. He uses it for coding, I have used it for writing. I don’t remember, not exactly, the details of the conversation but I said something about training GPT on all the emails and texts our mother had written. “After all,” I said (and thought), “what else is it good for?” Why else have we built such a strange and challenging tool if not to return to us that which will always be taken? What better use is there? The New York Times recently ran an article called “Using A.I. To Talk to the Dead: Some people are using artificial intelligence chatbots to create avatars of departed loved ones. It’s a source of comfort for some, but it makes others a little squeamish.”1 People have always longed for some sort of “direct line” to the dead. Along with purpose-made devices (like a séance trumpet), people have claimed to hear the voices of dead loved ones through the static of everyday radio waves, giving rise to the“ghosts in the machine.” Even Thomas Edison tried to invent a “spirit phone,” a means of using technology to commune with the dead. In this way technology has always been “haunted” and seen as a gateway to other worlds outside of our perception. In the spirit plane lurk our loved ones, anxiously waiting for the right technology to close the circuit, to connect. Even knowing that the psychic is likely a hoax or the Ouija board unreliable, it is still tantalizing to invest any purported otherworldly connection with a crumb of what if? My own work fine-tuning large language models is influenced by this kind of haunting, the what if, and inquires into how these models model voices that no longer exist, voices of writers we don’t often get to hear, such as Gwendolyn Brooks. (No offense, Shakespeare, but you’ve been dead a while and we hear you all the time.) It is perhaps wrong to say that these models model voices: some machine learning models do generate audible voices, but large language models use wizardry called deep learning to generate new text by analyzing textual data for its patterns. The text in this manuscript has been generated using the large Generative Pre-trained Transformer text-generating neural network known as GPT3. A large language model, or LLM, is a machine learning model that algorithmically processes, understands, and predicts language in a variety of language tasks—such as question and answer chatbots, machine translation, document summary, and more. ChatGPT is a question-and-answer program that uses LLMs as its base architecture and it can perform language tasks quite well, such as writing a book report or term paper for Rhetoric 101. These models have been pre-trained, meaning they’re already trained on the task of text generation. Fine-tuning is the process of further training a pre-trained language model, like GPT, on domain-specific data so that it performs better on specific language tasks. The predictions given are more adapted to the new data set, which is usually orders of magnitude smaller than the original training set. For example, an LLM fine-tuned on all of Shakespeare should theoretically perform better on a task related to Shakespearean-style writing than the standard model.4 I am not a machine learning researcher so I cannot speak to exactly how fine-tuning works or why even a small corpus of text is successful in shifting the model’s tone and approach.

Defiantly Human // Part 2
The lens on Unit 101's face were turning slightly to focus at a new task. It stood over a beautiful oak table, such table was carved centuries ago by an unknown artist. The shape was intricate and it possessed such... personality. It seemed to scream a name long forgotten by all. The carvings within its structure were seemingly tying a compromise between the strength and beauty of the wood.
Unit 101's bulky hands gently inspected the texture of the table. Something unlike everything it had experienced in its entire life. What a strange object, what purpose could such a creation have to its creator? what purpose did it carry for it self? These questions were muddled in between the data of its analysis... Blinks of something alien to this construct, quickly forgotten and changed into mere numbers. Width, height, length, "does it feel? ", weight, texture, strength, moisture. Data points invaded by something disgustingly different. The collector tapped at the machine's shoulder a couple of times. A quick snap and the revolving sound of its joints made both of them surprised. The collector giggled at her startled guest, she then asked with a wide smile. "Do you like this table?" Silence replied to her query... not wanting to make the moment awkward the collector continued. "This table was found in a long lost country, war ravaged its lands centuries ago... But this table survived alone in an abandoned workshop. We could not identify the artist, for everything else was long destroyed in the flames of destruction..." A small pause in her speech made her notice that the machine had changed its focus from the collector to back at the table. It didn't show emotion... It only held an unbreakable gaze. A spark echoed inside of the machine. A deep booming voice emanated from its metallic interior, this voice was cold and held a thick artificial accent to its words. "Does it have a name?" The collector in shock and awe replied excitedly to the machine. "It does not! in fact, I believe that it was never truly finished by its creator." A quick turn from the machine's head towards the collector spurred a smile from the woman. "It deserves a name. Collector, name it." In a test of sorts the collector bounced a question to the machine quickly. "Yes, it deserves a name... So name it, machine." Silence. Like a blade it cut through their conversation. Not even the noises of the machine seemed to exist in this moment, stares were the only exchange between the two... And like thunder in the night a word so beautiful that it would shake the core of the collector ripped through this curtain of silence. "Maria. Her name is Maria." Such a name would never come to mind for the collector... Maybe something like: "The unfinished legacy." And yet this name seemed to fit perfectly with the table. Questions lingered in the mind of the human, they skittered about inside of her mind and could not stop making such loud noises blocking out so many other subjects. She could not hold the question. "Why? why must it be Maria?"
"It meant the world for who made her... how would a wooden table survive a fire? Clearly it had so much meaning to her creator... Its shape is clear and carved with precision, the personality of the creator themselves radiates from such shapes. I think she would've been named like a daughter to them. No artist would name such beauty a simple title. Perhaps for the dedication and work put into its creation it became something more than a table."
In silence both stood admiring the beauty that is Maria. The collector stepped a bit closer to the machine. The machine did not reject her presence.
Thank you for reading!
This part is a one of the first interactions between Unit 101 and the collector. Something seems to be blooming in between the gears of the machine- and in between the collector and machine! I dunno what I will do next, but I do have some rough drafts! :3 Again, thank you so much for reading! Forgive my typos or punctuation errors I have been trying to improve on that lol.

What are your thoughts on Vi becoming an enforcer in Arcane? Do you think there's any way for it to be well-written and how would you prefer it to go down?
I've talked about Vi before and especially how I don't appreciate how the rushed romance destroyed her character in the third act.
So enforcer Vi? I hate it. Unless they take a very bold, very dark angle on Vi's motivations or what it does to her to become an enforcer and betray her people, I genuinely don't expect good things.
Like, the poor, destitute, orphaned by enforcer child, to unlawful prisoner regularly beaten in isolation, to fucking COP pipeline should really never exist, unless it's to explore some sort of really intense psychological trauma and maybe Stockholm syndrom…
I'm scared because she's truly a cop in the game. She's got splash art in cliche cop gear eating donuts, and her voice lines (rehauled for the show) had police brutality jokes. She just wasn't "that deep", and the show made her final position a little more untenable. Knowing her background, it makes very little sense she'd ever align with Piltover. I really hope they don't use her interest in Cait as the main mean to get her in uniform…
Can't we have canon lesbians that aren't fucking cops?? I thought Cait would go more down the rogue investigator route, making her charming, using her family and wealth for her eccentric pursuits and obsession for the truth… But it's not really what we got.
The only way I can see this well done for Vi is if she slowly relents when she's not getting results alone, and resigns herself to asking Cait for help. Maybe then she'd find that she thrives as an investigator or mediator. Like, seeing Vi, throughout the season, slowly realise she's good at policing her own people, and they respect her, and maybe if she's the one doing it, then enforcers won't have to, and she can make it easier on everyone… basically becoming Vander 2.0, is the only way I can see her regularly collaborating with Cait.
That OR go broke and make her a class traitor! I don't mind! It's dark, it's fucked, but PLEASE just don't give us a bird brained Vi who follows Cait because she's horny and can't understand class politics 101. That would be so sad.
I want Vi to struggle with Vander's legacy, to realise that the brutality she's inflicting with her stolen gauntlets is exactly what he didn't want for her. That she's taking her place into the cycle of violence that keeps the place down. Even better if she struggles with Silco's legacy, and realising at last that she'd actually have been on his side if not for all the blood between them and her insurmountable distate for shimmer. 'Oh no, the guy you hate was right about something' sort of struggle. Especially if it pitches her against Cait and BOTH OF THEM have to actually acknoledge how fucked things are, and that patronising idealistic speeches to victims of oppression isn't 'change' or 'good enough'.
I'd love to see Vi demanding enforcer help on her terms because she blames the problems going on in the Undercity on them, on the council, and through Cait's endorsement, trying to use them to fix things. That's a way for Vi to slowly get used to their methods, to feel bad when one dies, to go to strategy meetings and slowly, slowly… become cordial. Even if it disgusts everyone else.
Urgh, idk, honestly. I try not to think about it too much. Cait and Vi are my biggest regret from season 1, as I felt like they were both weakened by the way they were used on each other. I don't expect either of their storylines to be my jam in season 2. I'm going in there for Viktor mostly. Got to see my boy finish drinking Singed's Nasty Juice and go full Machine Herald.
Him, Jinx, Mel and Sevika are my main draws to the show. That and the art and story were rivetting enough that I expect any sad Lesbian Cop disappointment to be dismissable.
