People are claiming that sending police after University of Alberta students is okay because the University grounds are private property and the students were thus trespassing.
As a law professor, let me state that this is a gross mischaracterization of the law.
University grounds are essentially considered public property for the purposes of student protests. The Alberta Court of Appeal has ruled that the regulation of student expression on campus property is governmental in nature and subject to the Canadian Charter (2020 ABCA 1).
As the Court explained: “The ability of students to learn and to debate and to share ideas is not only a central feature of the core purpose of the University but also the grounds of the University are physically designed to ensure that the capacity of each student to learn, debate and share ideas is in a community space.
This means that the University’s decisions to trespass people are subject to the Canadian Charter, and must conform with the rights of freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association, and life, liberty, and security of the person. It should be noted that courts have previously held that temporary structures can play an expressive role and thus fall under freedom of expression.
The university simply cannot use its ownership of the grounds to suppress student speech or in a way that violates their rights. It is little different from a protest on, say, legislative grounds.
For more on the right to protest in Alberta, see this blog post by three esteemed law professors at the University of Calgary. I also recommend this blog post on student encampments and freedom of expression in Canada.

Jason Kenney

Physique: Husky Build Height: 5' 10" (1.77 m)
Jason Thomas Kenney PC ECA (born May 30, 1968) is a former Canadian politician who served as the 18th premier of Alberta from 2019 until 2022, and the leader of the United Conservative Party (UCP) from 2017 until 2022. He also served as the member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Calgary-Lougheed from 2017 until 2022. Kenney was the last leader of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party (PC Party) before the party merged with the Wildrose Party to form the UCP. Prior to entering Alberta provincial politics, he served in various cabinet posts under Prime Minister Stephen Harper from 2006 to 2015.

Kenney studied philosophy at the University of San Francisco, but returned to Canada without completing his degree. In 1989, he was hired as the first executive director of the Alberta Taxpayers Association before becoming the president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. Kenney was elected to the House of Commons in the 1997 federal election for the Reform Party. In 2000, he was re-elected as a Canadian Alliance candidate and then was re-elected five times as a candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada.

Handsome, nice full lips, husky with nice wide hips. And that brings me to that bangable ass of his that looks good in a pair of jeans. You should know by now, I have the biggest weakness for big, thick asses and this guy his one of the best. Problem is, he’s losing weight. Jason you can lose the weight, just don’t lose that butt. Because if I visit Canada one day, I want to take him out for a test ride. You know what mean. Fucking.

Lets see, Kenney is bilingual, speaking French and English. He has never been married and has no children. Wait a minute. A tough-talking Conservative who has never been married and apparently doesn’t like to be open about his personal life. I think I need to visit Canada. Now. Not to offer Kenney the DICK and video tape it for posterity. It’s to see the beautiful country of Canada of course. And if that other thing happens, all the better.

The Speaker: I’m excited to announce that over the last number of months I have been working very closely with a wonderful Alberta company that many of you will be familiar with, Smithbilt Hats. As you can see, on my head today is a new Alberta tradition that brings together all of the important parts of the traditional tricorne as part of the Speaker’s attire but given a slight western flair. I’m pleased to introduce this uniquely Alberta tricorne that blends the traditions of the hat as a symbol of the Speaker’s authority with our western roots, intertwining the history of ranching, farming, and the influence of rodeo cultures.
Now, all members will know the importance of the tricorne hat to each individual Speaker. That is, in the late 1800s the tricorne hat was popularized by being the most common of all hats. Today it is a reminder every day of the Speaker’s important role to that of the elected representatives and by extension the people of Alberta; the people’s hat, you might say. It’s my pleasure to introduce a distinctly unique Alberta tradition to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.

Royal Canadian Air Force celebrates its first Centenary
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/01/2024 - 23:07in Military
The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has reached the 100-year mark today. The beginning of the celebrations of the first centenary was marked with a ceremony in Edmonton.
As the Royal Canadian Air Force celebrates its 100º anniversary, Edmonton became the host of a moving recognition of its unwavering service to Canada. A historic air passage was carried out by the Tactical Helicopter Squadron "Goose" 408, adorning the skies above the legislative grounds of Alberta and marking the beginning of a six-month commemoration period throughout the country.
Helicopter overfly in Edmonton
The squadron's overflight was led by the veteran pilot and current deputy commander, Major Geoff Martin. With more than a decade of experience at RCAF and a personal connection with the service arising from childhood memories of admiring aircraft with his grandfather, Martin embodies the passion and dedication that have been the hallmark of the service in the last century.
The RCAF turns 100 today! ?
Today, we celebrate a century of excellence, courage, and innovation in the RCAF. As we mark this milestone, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the incredible individuals past and present who have played a part in shaping #YourAirForce. #RCAF100pic.twitter.com/9pcNaZcGlB
— Royal Canadian Air Force (@RCAF_ARC) April 1, 2024
The long-standing mission of the RCAF: to provide air defense, search and rescue and to assist in disaster relief, remains unchanged. An example of this dedication to domestic and international aid is Martin's deployment to Iraq, where he contributed significantly to Canadian operations.
Highlighting the festivities, Lieutenant-Gov. Salma Lakhani addressed the assembly and paid tribute to the noble history of the RCAF. The day was also marked by the elevation of the Elifer of the Royal Canadian Air Force within the legislative grounds and, later, the eminent structures of Edmonton, the High Level Bridge and the Jubilee Auditoriums, were illuminated in blue to signify the celebrations of the centenary of the RCAF.
In honour of the 100th anniversary of the @RCAF_ARC, buildings around the world are illuminated with blue lights, including the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in #France. ??

Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Thomas Sand, who dedicated 35 years to the RCAF, highlighted the incredible experiences he accumulated during his administration, such as tracking submarines and traveling the world, but emphasized that the most beloved aspect of the service is the unity and respect promoted among its members.
As the country continues to honor the 100-year history of the RCAF, it is evident that the spirit of duty to the nation and humanity that once formed the backbone of the Royal Canadian Air Force remains as strong today as ever.
Happy 100th birthday to @RCAF_ARC! Thank you for 100 years of air support! sic itur ad astra ('Such is the pathway to the stars') The #RoyalCanadianAirForce's incredible history:https://t.co/00V93ycniM #RCAF100 #WeTheNavypic.twitter.com/ijSp63bAxh
— Royal Canadian Navy (@RoyalCanNavy) April 1, 2024
Since its creation on April 1, 1924, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has played a key role in the history of Canada, contributing to the defense of the nation and participating in international operations. Its emergence faced significant challenges, evolving through technological advances and adapting to the changing nature of air warfare and peacekeeping.
Throughout World War II, Korea and NATO's Cold War missions, the RCAF grew in capacity and size. The integration of women and various multicultural groups in the service over time has also shaped the dynamics of the organization. Today, it operates a fleet of several aircraft, from fighters such as the CF-18 Hornet to transport aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules and maritime patrol aircraft such as the CP-140 Aurora.
Happy Centennial, Royal Canadian Air Force! ???
As we celebrate 100 years of soaring through the skies, the Canadian Armed Forces extends warmest congratulations to the@RCAF_ARC on this historic milestone. #RCAF100pic.twitter.com/7yAwvhR1qy
— Canadian Armed Forces (@CanadianForces) April 1, 2024
The aerospace industry has been a critical aspect of Canada's economy, contributing significantly to research and development, production and employment. Canada's Defense Policy, "Strong, Safe, Involved", describes significant investments aimed at improving the capabilities of the RCAF. This is expected to include the acquisition of 88 advanced F-35 fighter aircraft to replace the current CF-18 fleet, increasing the country's sovereignty and NORAD's obligations. These acquisitions and technological upgrades of current assets offer indications of potential market growth in the defense aerospace sector in Canada and around the world.
Attracting skilled labor remains a challenge in the aerospace industry, with demographic aging and competition from other sectors. In a broader scope, issues such as climate change and the need for sustainable development have pressured defense organizations to consider environmental impacts on their operations and innovations. In addition, cybersecurity and the emergence of space as a contested domain indicate that the RCAF, like its allies, must evolve to face new threats that go beyond the traditional roles of aerial superiority.
100 years for the @RCAF_ARC! It has been a privilege to serve our country with amazing Canadians. I want to honor those who have served and who continue to serve in Canada and around the world over the past century. #RCAF100 pic.twitter.com/g5SUXBX78D
— Joshua Kutryk (@Astro_Kutryk) April 1, 2024
The celebrations of the centenary of the RCAF not only define a historic milestone, but also stimulate reflection on its future path in the midst of a constantly evolving industry, with new challenges and opportunities. It serves as a reminder of the commitment and sacrifice of the men and women who have served and continue to serve under its flag - a commitment that remains an integral part of Canada's security and its global partnerships.

Emerging Opportunities in North America's Legal Cannabis Market: A Comprehensive Forecast to 2030
The North America legal cannabis market was valued at USD 36.70 billion in 2023 and is anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.9% from 2024 to 2030. The market’s robust expansion is primarily fueled by the ongoing legalization of cannabis across multiple U.S. states and Canadian provinces, as well as the increasing awareness of its therapeutic and wellness-related benefits. For example, in May 2023, the Government of Minnesota legalized cannabis for recreational use, making it the 23rd U.S. state to allow adult-use cannabis. Similarly, Kentucky’s General Assembly passed legislation to legalize medical cannabis, set to take effect in January 2025, further expanding the market landscape.
A significant contributor to the growing demand is the increased need for pain management solutions, particularly among individuals suffering from chronic and high-impact pain. The growing burden of chronic pain disorders is driving patients to seek alternative therapies such as cannabis. According to the U.S. Pain Foundation (August 2023), an estimated 51.6 million Americans are affected by chronic pain, of which 17.1 million suffer from high-impact chronic pain that significantly limits life or work activities. Supporting this, a study published in JAMA Network Open in January 2023 found that nearly one-third of chronic pain patients in the U.S. reported using cannabis to manage their symptoms. These trends underscore the expanding role of cannabis in therapeutic care and its growing acceptance among both consumers and healthcare professionals.
The market is further supported by pro-cannabis government initiatives and rising investment from both public and private sectors. A notable example is the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) launched by the Government of Alberta in April 2023. Through this initiative, cannabis growers and processors in Canada are eligible to access up to USD 2.6 billion (CAD 3.5 billion) in funding. The program is administered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and is aimed at enhancing sustainability, innovation, and competitiveness in the sector.
Another key driver of market growth is the increasing consumer acceptance of cannabis, alongside market expansion efforts by established and emerging cannabis companies. For instance, The Cannabist Company, a prominent New York-based cannabis enterprise, expanded its retail operations by launching adult-use cannabis sales in New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia in July 2024. The company now maintains a presence in 16 U.S. states, reflecting the growing strategic importance of regional market expansion to meet rising consumer demand.
Furthermore, both medical and non-medical applications of cannabis continue to gain traction, bolstered by ongoing research and innovation in product development. Over the past five years, federal funding for cannabis research and innovation in Canada has ranged widely—from USD 5,368.9, allocated to Ricci Cannabis to develop “wine-style” non-alcoholic cannabis beverages via the National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program, to a substantial USD 3.92 million granted to PBG Biopharma through the Regional Economic Growth through Innovation (REGI) program. These investments reflect strong institutional support for innovation and the potential commercialization of new cannabis products.
In addition, cannabis companies are investing heavily in research and development (R&D) to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their cultivation and retail operations. For example, in April 2023, Barky AI and Highten introduced Canna-GPT, an AI-powered cannabis education platform. This tool allows users to ask cannabis-related questions and receive accurate, real-time answers, helping bridge the knowledge gap and improve accessibility for both consumers and professionals.
