A group of protesters gathered outside of the Edmonton Police Service Northeast Division on Saturday, calling for police accountability and the resignation of police chief Dale McFee.
The protest was one of multiple that have been held since 28-year-old Mathios Arkangelo was shot and killed by a police officer in Fraser on June 29.
"I feel if we stop … this thing will be brushed under the rug," said Mathios' older brother Dini Arkangelo. "People will move on with their lives, and stuff like this will keep happening."
The shooting was captured by nearby security cameras, and the family released a 25-minute video compilation showing the interaction from multiple angles.

Jasper, a town in Alberta, Canada, was recently taken over by a tragic wildfire. As of July 26, 2024 at least 30% of the town has been destroyed, 358 out of 1,133 structures, with 25,000+ residents being forcibly evacuated for safety.
The Alberta government had cut back millions in funding for wildfire preparedness programs, leaving residents of Jasper floundering with little to no support while the United Conservative Party of Alberta fumbled its way through an arbitrary Treasury Board process trying to justify their decision to wait seven days before responding to emergencies.

Behold the dazzling colors of an iridescent ammonite (Placenticeras intercalare)! A relative of today’s squids, this ammonite lived some 80 million years ago near what is now Alberta, Canada. This fossil’s spectacular coloration is the result of millions of years of high temperatures and pressures. As these forces acted on nacre in this ammonite’s shell, it was transformed into a gemstone known as an ammolite. Along with amber and pearl, ammolite is one of only a handful of gems made by living organisms. You can spot this rare specimen in the Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Collections Core in the Museum’s Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation!
