Lipstick and Bras: Ayo Haynes
From the Lipstick and Bras Blog
Some say the world of real estate is a man’s world, but Ayo Haynes proves it would be nothing without a woman who is on top of her game! With a background as an actress and voice-over artist, a BA in Business Communications and an MBA in Marketing, Ayo is definitely making her mark in the world of real estate. As a Real Estate Broker in NYC for 13 years, she is now breaking into the Connecticut market and loving it! She is dedicated to helping her clients find the perfect place where home and wellness meet!
Definition of Success:
Success for me is when people call to ask me to be their exclusive agent or to work with them as a buyer without me having to go pitch them; your talent and experience speak for themselves. Pitches are like auditions in acting. You know you’ve made it when someone says, “Here’s the listing.”
I love this time in my career because I can make my own schedule which is especially needed as a single mom. Initially, getting into the business you work about fifty to sixty hours a week, especially if you’re on a busy team like I was. Starting out you have to be prepared to not get a check for three or four months which can be hard for most people. People see these reality shows and think that real estate is easy and that you only work with a client for a few days.
The real reality is that it is difficult, requires a lot of continuous education and experience, and is very time consuming. Sometimes the time you put in doesn’t match up with your commission check. You have to be willing to put in the work and be persistent. Most importantly you have to love working with and helping people.
Healthy Self Esteem:
I am a true believer in guarding what I take in whether it’s what I’m watching or listening to. I’m in two industries that require people to pick you based on your personality and experience. I need/require positivity around me all the time. If you are coming to the table with something heavy on you and being negative, it will affect your bottom line.
I also think it is important to use trusted friends and mentors as your mirror, from time to time, when needed. I can be hard on myself so I have to remind myself to treat me like a client and to be gentle with myself. We all have insecurities – physical or other. If someone I trust can be the voice of reason, I listen or at least take what they are saying into consideration.
Speaking of a voice of reason, my 4 year old daughter keeps it real with me all the time. Her bluntness is hilarious but insightful. She’s lucky she’s cute and my daughter! But seriously, I learn so much from her. How she gets over things quickly, she speaks her truth without malice, she’s kind, she apologizes when she’s in the wrong, she shares and she easily tells the important people in her life how much she loves them. I try to take a page out of her book all the time!
Dating Advice:
I probably should be the one taking advice but I think if you are on the fence about someone, go on three dates to see if there is really something there. Nowadays three dates can take weeks or months to happen so you have to rely on your instincts to gauge if the spaced out dates are happening naturally or because someone is playing a game of avoidance. We are living in a swipe left – swipe right world based mostly on pictures. Pictures don’t tell the whole story. I say the same to my clients when I show them what I know to be a great home but they dismiss it because the pictures didn’t grab them. Sometimes we have to slow down, go deeper, and take things offline when we normally wouldn’t.
What’s In the Future:
My business partner and I are working hard on crafting our brand which is all about where Home and Life meet Wellness. For us, that point is WELLNEST. We work with our clients on finding all the ways to make their home and all the other NESTS of their lives as comfortable, healthy, green, and empowering as they want or need to be.
I’m excited to be expanding my 13 years of experience in real estate to the Connecticut market. It’s been a fun challenge to learn a suburban market compared to New York City. My team partner, Ivonne, will be doing the same in New Jersey so the Haynes-Velasquez Team will be able to work with clients in the New York Tri-state area. That, of course, will mean adding to the team which is exciting.
I am also looking forward to more opportunities where my acting and real estate worlds get to play off each other. I recently was asked by the executives at my firm to co-host our semi-annual meeting at the Apollo Theater – it was amazing and a dream come true that I never would have expected to come from my work in real estate. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next on that front and developing a few ideas of my own. A woman’s work is never done!
Favorite Shade of Lipstick:
I’m more of a gloss person versus lipstick. But for special occasions and business meetings that’s when I put on lipstick. For me, I like a red that has a touch of brown. There is one from Arbonne I love called Dahlia and it’s the perfect combination of gloss and lipstick. Their products aren’t tested on animals, and are paraben and phthalates free which is all right up my alley!

Forgiving but NOT forgetting
To Err is Human, To Forgive Divine….a biblical passage that explains why we should learn to forgive because God in his greatness forgives. But what is inevitable is to forego the ability to forget. Once a mistake have caused immense pain then we naturally succumb to its effect. The consequence of being prone to hurts and pain. Machiavelli have pointed out how humans are naturally evil, that we often inflict pain on others as a response to how these significant others have inflicted pain on us as well. Psychology have reiterated our brain’s propensity to remember those sad and painful moments in our lives and naturally cultivate it.
How can then we possibly forget the faces and the names as well as the persona of those who have caused frustrations and confusions in our brains? It is easy to push one to forgive and then forget but such is easier said than done. And so if you say that you’ve forgiven but never have forgotten then such is pure mediocrity for we can never forgive if we have never forgotten!
No worries my dear because as the passage above have stated….to err is human, to forgive divine…we can never be divine but we will be forever human…prone to mistakes and immensely vulnerable!
The GIFT however that was given to us is the ability to think and decide….your susceptibility to errors is overpowered by your intellect….something that made you way superior than all the creatures in this universe.
Hence use that power to prevent errors and regrets in the future….logic my dear…simple logic!

Thoughts Become Things
Mind & Body
Many of us think that what our mind believes, our body conceives. It is a given and accepted fact but not many are aware of another truth. This truth is that the mind does not affect the body alone, rather it impacts our life and future as well.
How is that Possible?
The mind creates a reality that can significantly affect what we have in our current life. Constant thoughts of a certain object, event, and person can make things happen. Flooding your mind with what you desire allows it to materialize. When you passionately allow your brain to focus on the perceived goal you are unconsciously setting the path to its attainment. This phenomenon is in accordance to what we often say as ‘the Law of Attraction’. Whatever you think of…. you attract into your life!
As we look deep into the feasibility of making ‘wishes, hopes and dreams a reality’, a revelation is made. It is clear that as we continually focus our mind, our senses and our heart onto something we really want, the same will consequently manifests itself. A surprise is definitely coming your way. Be awed with how the universe will rearrange itself to grant what your heart desires.
Final Thoughts
Indeed it is possible to acquire a perceived reality. It follows that if you believe in yourself, in what you can do and what you can share to this earthly life then all of your thoughts will materialize. Creating a vision board which has images of objects, people, and feelings that you want to attract in your life will help you focus more.
Remember that you are a unique person with unique abilities. Focus on the good things that you desire and the universe will deliver it right to your doorstep!

Art is Life : Life is Art
Art is a concept which basically provides colour and substance to human existence. Life without art is dull and without meaning. Art stimulates our senses and cognitive abilities as it allows the expression of emotions and the subjective self. It is a tangible manifestation and product of human activity that allows the expression of individuality through a set of skills. As a form of expression it requires creative skill and imagination that can produce a thing of beauty and power. It shows not only the artist’s skill and thoughts but it may represents as well a larger community as it reflects the life, culture and history of a group of people in a given time and space. As a way to convey insights and emotions it assigns meaning to forms, colours, shapes, lines and movements.
As a therapeutic tool art can be a brilliant way to manifests our sentiments, our emotions and insights. It can salvage us from boredom, sadness, anxiety and other negative thoughts in a creatively productive manner.
In moments of failures art can be our refuge, our haven. Let art serve as your tool to appreciate the beauty and mystery of life.

Freedom = Power
Power & Responsibility
In the movie ‘Spiderman’, Peter Parker had his famous line “With great power, comes great responsibility”. Regular people like us possess no special powers like Spiderman does but we actually have ‘Freedom’. Freedom is power and we all tend to over use it while at the same time overlook what it can do to us and to others.
We must educate ourselves about this basic human right we all call ‘Freedom’ because it is a necessary element to achieve self- determination. Freedom guarantees liberation from the shackles of ignorance and medieval thinking. It provides us with an opportunity to discover our abilities, our unique talents and eventually our expertise.
Freedom & Choice
Freedom provides us the right to choose between what is best for us. It facilitates us with the use of our ‘will’ to “do or not do” even with the presence of pressure from the ‘significant others’. Life is confronted with tons of decisions that can make or break us. Gladly we have ‘freedom’ which provides us the opportunity to weigh things before we dive onto our judgment.
As thinking creatures facilitated with cognition we can optimize the use of our ‘Freedom’ to achieve ‘self-determination’. It allows the attainment of what you pursue in your life. Whether your life goal is to earn the degree you are working for; choose the career path you have planned for; earn the income you desire; or even achieve the life status you longed for.
But Wait….There’s More!
As Freedom is considered as an innate power let us instill in our heads that ‘Where Freedom Ends, Social Responsibility Begins’. Our freedom to express ourselves and to decide on relevant matters always has its consequent impact onto the lives of others. Let us be mindful of how our decisions will impact the lives of other people in our community and our society.
Like life, ‘freedom’ can be short-lived if improperly handled.

How to Be Happy About Your Earthly Life : Key Tips
Being truly happy is a sentiment you experience without a tinge of pretension It’s being joyful in the midst of your current life situation. Happiness is that thing which drives us to achieve whatever we desire and to be our best in that chosen path.
It is not much a surprise to know that researches have revealed the relationship between happiness and success. Happy people largely succeeds in life regardless of their set goals.
It’s true that somehow we can be contented and blissful with the kind of life that we were blessed with, however, negative emotions plague us with the ‘what ifs’ in our head. What if I was born wealthy? What if I was more intelligent? What if I have that kind of life? What if I have a different set of parents?
So how do we really find that very elusive happiness? That very genuine joy inside our hearts so at least we can be fueled to work for a better life and be self-determined? It’s definitely never an overnight process, in a sense we can’t just reset or rewire our brains to feel happy and to just have happy thoughts and fly away (like Peter pan). It takes practice my dear friend. It’s a habit and a mindset that we need to develop. And so I have here some key points. Go over it and try to process 🙂
Gratitude is the Key
Not everyone is given a sort of a perfect life. Remember happiness is not guaranteed by a seemingly perfect life. Many are able to find a spouse or a partner but later realizes that they want to be out of the relationship (the case of Stripe, Hope for the Flowers). Some are born filthy rich and yet can’t find life’s meaning (take the case of Gautama Buddha when he was still a Prince). The pursuit of happiness whether it’s long-term or short-term means reorienting your brain to focus on what you have and NOT on what you don’t have. Sometimes we exert all our effort searching for happiness in the wrong direction and we just get lost. You fail to be happy because you did not search within. How about changing that mindset? Check out what you’ve got, be grateful about it and feel the happiness filling up your heart 🙂
Develop a Mantra for the Day
Learning to speak to yourself (in a good way) is very essential to be happy. Choose a positive Mantra for the day which you will repeat to yourself. It may be…”You are such a great person, so unique and one of a kind! You are awesome in many ways!” This will certainly bring you to a good mood, you’ll be able to uplift your spirit. This will eventually create good vibes that will surely be felt the whole day. The universe will surely return the favor by giving you the goodness that you desire and that will surely make you happy 🙂 Make it a habit!
Celebrate Life and Be Hopeful
Life is not just about suffering, yes it is filled with challenges. But remember, life will definitely be a bore without these obstacles. It is when we overcome our challenges that we experience happiness! Indeed each has his own battle to win but it’s entirely how we approach the issue that really matters. So just go on…strategize and attack the problem however you think it’s appropriate. But after the battle..celebrate..appreciate your ‘self’. Either you treat yourself to an ice-filled beer or a steaming hot coffee or a nice spa or a delightful meal in your favorite diner…it’s your call! Celebrate these little victories and be hopeful about life.
Work, Work, Work
I am absolutely not referring to employment or your gainful job. What I mean is learning to get out of your shell to find ways to be productive! Idle people are sad people because their thoughts often revolve around insignificant things. Happiness is achieved with actions and not just thoughts. There are definitely millions of ways to be busy even if you are stuck at home or in your room 🙂 We need to engage and be happy with the many things that we can do…you are a person with gifts. You just need to explore by looking inward and in that case understand what really will make you happy. It can range from doodling a portrait, creating good recipes or even re-painting your home. You see all of these productive activities can make you a happy person 🙂
Never Compare Yourself with Others Around You
Recent studies have revealed how the workings of the social media have triggered our brain’s survival instinct best to protect and keep us safe. This negates our ability to feel elation, contentment and bliss as we witness how others are making it ‘big’ in their lives (as they consistently post about their ‘good life’) while we fall below societal expectations.
This brings me back to those years (early 90’s) when incidentally I was invited in an expensive hotel to witness the induction of a popular fraternity at the University. I sat with some member-students who brought along their elegantly dressed girlfriends. One of them asked me if I am from the same school, I said ‘yes’. And without batting an eyelash they all exclaimed “oh, we thought you were from another school!” 🙁 Suddenly I was Cinderella after the clock struck 12 🙂 You see, it is not ourselves who robs us of our right to be happy! It’s perpetrated by people whom we look up in awe while they judge us down.
Nobody wants to feel bad about themselves. It’s time to STOP HURTING YOURSELF! Get rid of those negative emotions, develop the power from within and perfect those skills & abilities. Soar high and don’t be pulled down by envy and resentments, they’re but toxicities in life.
Key Takeaway
Happiness means learning to understand yourself, appreciating what you can do and what you’re good at and believing that everything will be alright. Those spiraling negative thoughts and worries must be set aside. There are things that we cannot control so never allow it to plague your mind. Happiness is a choice, it is not sourced from others. The pursuit of happiness is not as difficult as you think…it’s just within you my friend 🙂
