Man I've been offline for a while longer than I wanted to however! I just got a new victim! i mean, test subject! (a google pixel 3a) If I'm lucky and I don't brick it immediately, I'm gonna spend some time trying out a few different mobile distributions because I feel like I never gave them a fair enough chance in the past, plus a lot of them went through some major updates and whatnot since I last saw (or used) them! I'll prolly post here regarding what I experience, and what my opinions are. I don't think I'll make an argument as to which one is necessarily better however I will try and figure out what kinda person each is better for if that makes sense

Keep Your Old Android Phone Running Longer With LineageOS
Click your device to open the instructions for installation. I can’t overstate how important it is to keep those instructions open throughout the setup process so you can follow them exactly—the steps to install the OS really are going to vary depending on the device, and it’s possible to brick your phone if you’re not paying close attention. I’d like to first take a moment to explain how to set…

Since I am not so busy today I was looking into updating my Android Tablet that I've had a custom ROM on for some time. It was a complicated setup because the Tablet isn't officially supported by LineageOS, but it seems the support via the so called "GSI" image has become better, so I am going through the things I had installed, looking at what I wanna keep, what can go, so that I can then do a clean install because I don't think just updating this through normal processes will go well on this thing.
What fascinates me while doing this is that some really large and popular projects, are just kinda dead. The themeing engine Substratum has Archived its GitHub Repository, and usually when big projects archive their GitHub, there will be a link to some new alternative that's on the rise that's usually even better. But after searching GitHub and Reddit, it seems Substratum left with no successor in sight, which is quite sad because it actually looks really really cool what you can do with it.
I generally leave my main phone untouched by Custom ROMs because from my experience with Arch Linux, I will break it, so I prefer keeping this kinda stuff to secondary devices where I can afford the Operating system failing. But even then, this would've looked really good on my tablet too, so I'm a bit sad.
Perhaps there will eventually be a new themeing engine on the rise, but considering how long I left the OS on this tablet untouched, I will probably not notice when that new themeing engine appears.
Worth mentioning I did still use that tablet, extensively, one of my best purchases because I can just stream whatever show I want on it while programming or gaming. If y'all think you need a third monitor for your streaming, maybe take a cheap Android tablet into consideration

i ended up gutting my phone of google services by installing lineageOS only, and i mostly only use apps i can install via fdroid. what potentially needed in a pinch apps i can't get have working browser versions (uber, my email provider, my bank).
i have aurora store too, that directly downloads the .apk files from google play. some apps work mostly fine without google services, like discord. which is the only chat app i have on my phone as well as signal. i don't have notifications turned on for chat apps.
duolingo's app works okay w/o google services too, just the exercises where you speak into the mic don't work, but i can do without those. it must use some kind of google voice service.
setting up my phone this way has meant i'm more organised, because i don't have a thousand notifications to distract me. i plan my route to where i need to go before i leave the house. i only check my emails when at home where i can dedicate time to them, and not just swipe a notification away and forget.
the battery life on my phone is phenomenal because all i use it for is podcasts, sms/calls, duolingo, occasional discord messages, and occasional navigation (OpenStreetMap is good, and any addresses missing you can contribute yourself. my only issue is sometimes it takes a while to find my gps location, so i just make sure location is enabled while i'm getting ready to leave the house.) also google services running in the background are enormous battery drainers.
i think the funniest side effect of all this is my neck pain got so much better cos i'm not staring at my phone for ages. and i don't feel constantly anxious, because i'm not constantly reachable. it's let me take back time for myself. it's reduced the amount of urgency in my life.
You don't need a separate, dumber device. It is within your power to make your current smartphone dumb as shit, a real idiot.
[…]
Make you background something really boring, like the default globe image. No children, no pets, no heartwarming memories. This is your enemy, not your friend; don't let it wear the skins of your loved ones.

i just started using a fingerprint lockscreen unlock for my phone for the very first time because the operating system is a modded version of lineageOS so i trust the privacy but ever since then wellsfargo and google will not leave me alone about signing in via biometrics and have taken away the option to see my password as i input it so typos are more frequent and frustrating. it's like big brother all up in here and not even in a sexy way

How I Customize Windows and Android
Windows: Rainmeter
Rainmeter Skins
Rainmeter | Deviantart
r/Rainmeter
Rainmeter is where I get nifty desktop widgets (skins). There are a ton of skins online and you can spend hours just getting caught up in customizing. There are clocks, disk information, music visualizers, weather widgets*, and more.
I get most of my skins from the links I posted, but they are by no means the only resources for Rainmeter skins. r/Rainmeter and Deviantart have some awesome inspiration.
This is what my desktop looks like right now:
Tumblr media
Dock: Dock 2 v1.5
Icons: icons8 - this is probably the best free resource for icons I know of
"Good Evening [name]": Simple Clean
Clock: Simplony
* Note about weather widgets: Older Rainmeter skins that use old weather APIs will likely not work. The Rainmeter forums has information with lists of weather skins that do work.
Windows: Useful Things for Workflow
Flow Launcher - this is basically a search bar, app launcher, and even easy-access terminal all in one. The default hotkey is Alt+Space. I use this almost primarily to do quick calculations. There are a ton of plugins and I've barely scratched the surface with how I use it.
ShareX - This is my screenshot tool and I love it. Admittedly, I find it difficult to configure, but once I had it set up, I didn't really have to adjust it. You can create custom hotkeys to screenshot your entire screen, or to select your screen, or even use OCR. This has saved me a ton of time copying over text in images and making it searchable.
Bonus - Get Rid of Windows Web Search in the Start Menu: If you're comfortable with editing your registry, and you want to get rid of the pesky web results in Windows search, this fix is what I used to get rid of it.
Android: Nova Launcher
This is my main Android launcher that I've been using for almost as long as I've owned a smartphone, and it's super customizable. The best part is that it's free with no ads, and you can purchase premium at a one-time cost.
The main things I use it for are app drawer tabs, renaming apps, hiding apps, and changing the icons.
I've had premium for so long that I've forgotten what the features were, but looking at the website, the one feature I use is app folders.
This is what my phone homescreen and app drawers look like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Time/Weather: Breezy Weather
Calendar: Month: Calendar Widget (I got this on sale for like 30 cents once but there are a plethora of good calendar apps out there)
Icons: Whicons - White Icon Pack
Advanced Customization
Further things to enhance your customization experience to look into include:
Flashing a custom Android ROM (e.g. LineageOS)
Give up on Windows & install Linux instead (Ubuntu is a good one to start with)
Android app modification: ReVanced apps (includes Tumblr), Distraction Free Instagram
Miscellaneous notes under the cut:
None of these links are affiliate links. These are all tools I happen to use on a daily basis and I'm not being paid to promote them.
Install Rainmeter skins and programs I recommend at your own risk. Before altering Windows, such as editing the registry, make sure you have everything backed up.
The Windows web search fix works on my Windows 11 machine. I don't know if it works for Windows 10, but I do know I was able to disable it in Windows 10 at some point, so your mileage may vary.
Install non-Play Store apps at your own risk. (Although in my opinion, open source APKs are less sketchy than some apps on the Play Store...) Always check where you're downloading APKs form!
The wallpaper for my desktop and phone are custom wallpapers I made myself.

Is there even a search engine that isn't shit anymore?
I stopped using google unless I had absolutely no other choice years ago out of principle. Like "installed lineageOS on phone in order to have degoogled android and just deal with all the inconveniences of not using the play store" level. Duckduckgo had that big "actually turns out they're still manipulating search results and allowing trackers while operating specifically on a platform of claiming to be against those things" thing. Searx seemed cool but never seemed to work consistently. I couldn't get yandex to not return results in Russian.
Basically have been using startpage but it never seems to want to get verbatim results like what the fuck I'm pretty sure startpage scrapes its results from google and bing so it's THEIR fault and they seem to have just completely fucking thrown away boolean search shit and quotation marks for verbatim phrases and all of that (and adding that bit on the end of the URL or getting the firefox extension to get google's marginally less shit results is unfortunately not a solution for me since I don't want to use google at all in the first place)..
essential shit
Like yeah advertising and SEO and AI murdered them but I don't know which one is even the least murdered at this point

I installed Lineage 17 made from salih_4187 on XDA because Android Nougat is really old and apps don't support Nougat anymore (YouTube, Tumblr etc.). And this is as funcionable as Resurrection Remix (except for the NFC) and the battery life got a little worse (prolly because of the newer version). You saved my day, salih_4187. If you are wondering about the ROM, here's the link:

The best and worst thing about being into esoteric phones is everyone wants to talk to you about whatever phone youre using. Like god, yes hot trans woman at the bus stop, please talk to me about my 2" smartphone running lineageOS... Brett in marketing though, please don't.

the ideal form of internet content is 2-6 hours of someone with a little bit of undiagnosed autism dissasembling phones, tablets, laptops, computers, ect and cleaning them, repairing them, doing something silly on them like installing arch linux from scratch on a tiny dell computer from like 2013 or installing lineageOS on a samsung galaxy s7 with no back glass and a hole drilled out of it where the front camera is or installing a modchip on a gamecube or fixing a USB port in a car stereo. if a transgender woman made youtube videos like this i think i would ask forher hand in marriage.
