weirdest casualty of long Covid (besides. yk. the Incurable Disability) is in terms of linguistic processing I can truly no longer talk or sing as fast as I used to
not that I was super fast before, but one of the days I was sickest, words actually stopped... meaning anything? like I was at work, I was hitting my DT script, but was pushing through on pure muscle memory phonetically. I could process what I was hearing or reading just fine, but could not talk outside of this heavily repetitive workplace script, which is actually very dystopian now that I think about it. virus hitting the brain means I'm a zombie that can't speak except to say, "HIII :) whatcanIgetstartedferyouthismorning?"
anyway, thought it was just fatigue, but went to my car on my break, watched a trending video of people trying to rap along to Fergalicious at double speed. I could LIP SYNC to it just fine. I tested my theory. but I could NOT get my mouth and voice to work at the same time to actually sing/rap it. even now, tbh, I have to make myself NOT think about it while rapping it to get the words to flow out or I get stuck. like it's truly something in the brain for where you process speech, but not where you process just lyrical phonics like music. I have to consciously make a REAL effort to turn off the "word" part of my brain to be fast again.
I speak perfectly legibly, I can genuinely get up to decently fast normal talking speeds, just not Northeastern fast-fast. but it comes up in music a surprising amount, and it's kind of annoying to have lost as a skill.
#I honestly attribute some parts of my recovery to truly obnoxious vocal training...#like I HATE having blocked sinuses so I have a technique to basically forcibly drain them w face massage + finding the right notes to sing#that will resonate just enough to open up the back of those mfs and slide everything out#I am also a good one for hitting enunciation exercises as a stim#so shifting to Phonetic Mode in the brain was like... VERY NOTICED but it felt like the Princess Bride left handed duel scene#just switching swords to an equally equipped hand#I also read out loud to myself fairly often now just to re-sharpen the Linguistic side... stuff you'd do for reading & language mastery yk?#idk if I'll ever get the speed back fully except maybe phonetically again but fuck it we move#health

Visiting TV-station as a part of a mastery program
WARNING: All events explained later a part of a student/group project for my mastery degree. It's not a commercial or an advertisement, it's just simply a post about something we were asked to share our feeling about.
This is the tape recorder that had been used in the old creation of the tv programs, news in particular. Just imagine - that big box was used for the recordings of the live news, and it wasn't the only one tape recoder that was used for such purposes. Back then in 1950s, several of those boxes could be found in the recording room, alongside sweaty operators and dying from heat news reporters. Why were they feeling so hot? Because those tape recorders could get overheated pretty easily.
Not the best quality, but that's my phone. Hey, you use what you have. Anyways, this is the camera from the same time period.
Our mastery program group is sitting in the chairs, while other mastery group and some of our professors are posing in the background in the recording room for the radio stations that are working in our city. It's an evening time, but hey, they let us in and we didn't even accidentally cut the wires!
It's a little space for the producers and directors to watch and make quick corrections for the person reporting the news and just working on everything in the live format.
The studio where the news are recorded and traslated live. It's so nice to see everything from the other point of view, when you're the one that stands on the other side of the screen.
It was a very interesting visit, especially when we were talking about how exactly the production works. I'm glad I had the opportunity to visit that place.

What I find particularly interesting when I speak to french speaking people about this phenomenon, is that they all seem to agree that if you were to do an orthography reform that would drop these distinctions, you would not be able to understand written french any more.
I always get people saying, "But you need to write the plural 's', or else no one will know if it is plural or not."
But when they are speaking, they don't struggle with it, even though there is barely ever a plural marker
The weirdest thing about French orthography to me is the way it makes grammatical distinctions which are absent phonetically. Like, for most nouns, there's no phonetic difference between the singular and plural, yet the orthography regularly distinguishes number. And verbs make far fewer person-number distinctions in speech then they do in writing. Like, chante (1S/3S), chantes (2S) and chantent (3P) are all homophones yet written differently
Is this something French children learning to write struggle with? Like, do young children get them mixed up and write, say, "tu chante", "je chantes", "les homme", etc?
#linguistics#french orthography#i got into arguments with my mum about this#she is really proud of the french orthography and her mastery of it#but i feel like having that sort of orthography shows the elitism that the académie likes to associate with the 'proper' french language

Indis appreciation post!
Disclaimer: All the canon info is taken from Morgoth's Ring and Peoples of Middle Earth. Also, this isn't a character analysis/meta. It's just a list of stuff I love (plus some headcanons) about one of my favorite characters in the legendarium.
1. She's athletic and outdoorsy. We're told that Indis is "exceedingly swift of foot" and that "she walked often alone in the fields and friths of the Valar, turning her thought to things that grow untended." When Finwe sees her, she's chilling on a mountainside. I love that she's associated with nature, specifically the wilderness. She parallels Feanor in her exploration of Aman and interest in the imperfect. Also, this is purely self-indulgent but ever since reading HoME for the first time, I've pictured Indis as tall and broad, and muscular beneath a layer of fat.
2. She doesn't let her unrequited love affect her life. "There was ever light and mirth about her." She's not the pining, languishing princess stereotype. She goes on. She doesn't let it make her bitter or depressed, and she is so restrained that only Mandos and possibly Ingwe are aware of her feelings.
3. Part of her attraction to Finwe is intellectual. In HoME we're told that his "mastery of words delighted her." Considering that Indis is also a poet/composer ("wove words into song") and that the Vanyar enjoy linguistics, it makes sense. It's also just really cute.
4. She's politically minded. Her reasoning for pronouncing 's' instead of 'th' is: "I have joined the Noldor, and I will speak as they do." This is the right thing to do to gain the respect of the Noldor and their acceptance of her authority. I also think she makes a statement with Fingolfin and Finarfin's mother-names. Arakano ("high chieftain") and Ingoldo ("the Noldo, eminent among the kindred") are not only powerful, prophetic names, they're also strikingly similar to Ingwe ("chief of chieftains") who is the High King not just of the Vanyar, but all Eldar. What a power move.
5. She's able to balance her own culture with the culture she marries into. Indis integrates into Noldorin society easily while remaining Vanyarin at her core, as is evidenced by Finwe saying that "above all her heart now yearns for the halls of Ingwe and the peace of the Vanyar." Her sons also respect and are proud of their mixed heritage; Finarfin "loved the Vanyar, his mother's people" and is said to be like them (as are Finrod and Galadriel), and Fingolfin's daughter-in-law is Vanyarin (plus the Nolofinweans have a special connection to Manwe).
6. She gets an awesome prophecy about her line. "But I say unto you that the children of Indis shall also be great, and the Tale of Arda more glorious because of their coming. And from them shall spring things so fair that no tears shall dim their beauty; in whose being the Valar, and the Kindreds both of Elves and of Men that are to come shall all have part, and in whose deeds they shall rejoice. So that, long hence when all that here is, and seemeth yet fair and impregnable, shall nonetheless have faded and passed away, the Light of Aman shall not wholly cease among the free peoples of Arda until the end." Fuck yeah.
7. Her name means "valiant woman." This is the only definition given in Morgoth's Ring, I believe. I highly prefer it over the "bride" meaning because it's a badass name and is similar to Artanis ("noble woman") and Astaldo ("the valiant"). A headcanon that I'm particularly attached to is that Indis's mother-name is Indome, meaning "will of Eru."
8. She's popular with most of the Noldor. We're told that "Finwe, King of the Noldor, wedded Indis, sister of Ingwe; and the Vanyar and Noldor for the most part rejoiced." The majority of the Noldor also follow Fingolfin and Finarfin instead of Feanor.
9. She's friends with Nerdanel. HoME states that Nerdanel went to "abide with Indis, whom she had ever esteemed."
10. She gets pissed off at Finwe when he sides with Feanor. So much so that he thinks she won't want to see him if he's re-embodied. I know this is from his perspective but I'm inclined to agree. [However, this is still very presumptive of him, and his comment that "Indis parted from me without death" is super shitty. Eugh.]
11. She's close to her kids. Finarfin takes after her, Fingolfin passes on the name she gave him, Findis lives with her, Lalwen goes by the name she gave her. Finwe also says that "she hath dear children to comfort her."
So there we have it! What little info we get about Indis is pretty awesome. And this is just a list; I could write a whole essay on her fortitude and unconventionality and my numerous headcanons about her.

Dad bi han and giving his son "the talk"
ok so, hear me out
he NEVER considered he would have to have the talk. like it never just came to him. also let me set the scene.
your son is around 6 years old and you’re pregnant for the second time, and of course a child is always curious so he WILL ask questions. worst part? they are mostly directed to you. not because bi han doesn’t care, he gets his own set of questions but they mostly regard the lin kuei business, and trust me explaining to a 6 year old what a ninja assassin is can be difficult.
so one day the entire family is home, eating dinner and then the dreaded question comes.
‘ mom, where do babies come from? ’
to your dismay he asked you.
but you heard your husbands hushed laugh and decided that he will suffer too.
‘ i think your father is the one who should explain this to you honey. ’
your sons eyes drifted from you to his father who looked surprisingly calm and collected (he almost choked).
‘ let’s not discuss this at the table, how about that? ’
after dinner you excused yourself to the bedroom, partially to not give bi han the chance to escape the talk and partially because of genuine exhaustion.
let’s be honest bi han is not the type of parent to talk about how a child magically appears in a cabbage field or a stork brings it. he won’t go into detail but he will do the classic
‘ son, when two people who love each other very much want to start a family, they have to reproduce…. ’
a religious avoider of the word sex. will simply refuse to say it, mf actually becomes a linguist and drops “reproduction”, “copulation”, “engaging in sexual intercourse”.
don’t ask him how it went.
i’m sorry, this is kind of a train wreck also i am still recovering after grinding kitana to 14 lvl mastery (it was rough) (i did it only for the invasion sub zero skin)

The Aesthetics of Spanish Superlatives
Elevating Descriptive Language The Spanish language, rich in nuance and expressive potential, offers various ways to emphasize and elevate qualities to their utmost degree. One particularly intriguing aspect is the use of superlative forms, which allow speakers to highlight extremes and make comparisons with flair. Whether you’re praising the finest wine or lamenting the dullest book, mastering…

Japanese diary 1
I don't know if I'll keep this up or not, but im trying a new thing and want to note it down so that i can see in hindsight if it works.
I'm JLPT N2-level, but I haven't studied Japanese in 2 years. When I was learning Japanese most actively, I was living in Japan and felt very rushed because I wanted to learn as much as I could as quickly as I could, even if it meant cramming in tons of information without necessarily mastering it all. In addition, I was having some physical difficulties with my hands when I was learning kanji, so I was never able to practice writing.
I'm now a Japanese tutor, and I'm teaching a kid the language right from level 0.
And I'm planning to move back to Japan.
All of this adds up to: I'm thinking now is a good time for me to do a "restart," where I study the language all over again, focusing on deep mastery and on gaining (hand)writing skills.
Right now I'm doing this by:
Reading a bunch of books on Japanese linguistics to better understand how Japanese developed. I was inspired to do this by some folks I know whose Japanese seems to really benefit from their understanding of the history and mechanics of the language
Learning to write 1-2 kanji every day.
Copying down at least a few sentences of Japanese every day to improve my handwriting.
Other miscellaneous stuff.
So....here's what ive done so far:
I'm reading a book called How to Improve Your Memory Week by Week, and it's helping me a lot tbh. Im relearning to treat my memory as a muscle I can strengthen and refine.
Read about 200 pages of Handbook of Japanese Lexicon and Word Formation
50 pages into a reread of Jay Rubin's Making Sense of Japanese. I found this book unhelpful and confusing about 15 years ago, and I find it pretty unhelpful and confusing now, but Jay Rubin is extremely funny so ill 頑張っている
I can now write 貌、氾、and 極, all kanji I definitely couldn't write before 2 days ago.
I copied the first 2 pages of 本屋さんのルビねこ, which is a cute little chapter book about a cat who lives in a bookstore. Ive already read it before, and the reading level is probably appropriate for like 7-9 year-olds. I picked it because a) I like the story, b) easy to understand so I can focus on my handwriting instead of running to my dictionary, and c) uses a sufficient amount of common kanji.

That's all! It feels surprisingly good to be back in the groove again. Hopefully my motivation lasts
