#Literally ADAM from SK8

one thing i really love about sk8 is how renga's love languages slowly meld together and become one another's... its pretty clear that langa's love language is words of affirmation- he's constantly telling reki he's amazing and talented- and reki's is physical touch- he can't keep his arm off people's shoulders to save his life- but what i love is that its as if they really become the other person's, too.

like. in early episodes of the anime, langa appears more stiff and mildly put-off when reki jostles his shoulders, throws an arm around him, pokes him, etc. similarly, when langa throws compliments at reki, reki brushes them off and maintains that he's not as special or important as langa thinks he is.

but then langa starts doing the same things reki does; dapping him up, hugging him (such as at the beach) or pulling him a little too close (still in the beach episode, when reki almost falls off his skateboard and langa grabs him), literally tackling him in a hug after racing adam, etc.

reki definitely starts throwing langa's own love language back at him early on- calling him amazing, reassuring him, encouraging him- but it grows and grows throughout the show. both things do, and then suddenly both of them are primarily using words of affirmation and physical touch to express love. i just think it's very neat how that seems to have happened because they literally got it from one another.

I just finished Sk8 the Infinity

first off "queer subtext" my ass, it is front and center you can't NOT see it.

second, oh my god the theme of love and having a passion for something is done in a way that scratches my brain in the best way. The three main relationships, Reki and Langa, Joe and Cherry, Tadashi and Adam, whether you think they are gay or not they totally are all highlight this dynamic of loving skating versus getting lost in the competition.

Reki and Langa are the clearest example of this. Reki loves skating, he may not be the best at it but he truly loves it. He understands the tricks and the skills, he knows it so well that he can make boards specifically to suit nuanced skills like Langa's because he loves it. He has the passion and the spirit for it which is the central thing he learns during his character arc in the show. But even outside his arc, Reki embodies the spirit of skating, that love of skating. That's what makes his race with Adam so important and that's present in why Langa feels the way he does when he's skating with Reki other than being gay. Langa falls in love with skating and Reki but then he starts to get lost in the competition of it all. Once he races with Adam (who is the antithesis of Reki's skating spirit), his love for skating is poisoned by Adam's "love" of skating. He starts focusing on skills, getting better, reaching Adam's level, he starts losing the spirit of skating. He loses Reki. Once Langa realizes what he's missing, he begins seeking it out again, looking for Reki. But Reki hasn't come back yet, the fun of skating is dead still until Reki has his own realization. Something that is brought back in part by the two other "Reki's" of these relationships: Joe and Tadashi.

Joe and Cherry's is the one that is in the background the most, but it's clear they're meant to parallel Reki and Langa's relationship. While the dynamic is not as extreme as the other two relationships it is still present. Joe loves skating, even if he wasn't the best at skating he'd still be doing it. That is made clear in his conversation with Reki when he gets him to come see Langa at the tournament. He understands that. His race against Adam isn't about proving his skill, he wants to beat Adam because he hates what Adam has become and what Adam is embodying. He wants to punch him in the face. Cherry however does want to prove his skill to Adam. He wants to beat Adam because he's better than him. In a sense, Adam's "love" tainted his enjoyment of skating too. Hence the AI board, the board giving him everything down to the millisecond, to the decimal so he could get the best time possible. I honestly believe part of Joe's worry during Cherry and Adam's race is because he knows Cherry is going to get lost in trying to surpass Adam and forget the fun of skating. Then Cherry gets slammed in the face quite literally by this, he's forced to face what's being going on through this injury. We don't see the resolution of this since it's regulated to the background, but it's still clear these two are meant to parallel Reki and Langa's dynamic towards skating. Also there's the whole thing where Adam is like Cherry's ex and Joe wants to fight the ex that hurt Cherry yadda yadda yes I ship Matchablossom what's new.

Tadashi and Adam are the most extreme of this dynamic going in a negative direction. Adam as I stated is the antithesis to the spirit of skating. He's completely forgotten what it meant to skate and is now tainting every other skater around him with this "love" he has. He's so lost in this darkness that it's seeping into the other skaters like Langa. All that matters is being the best, to crush everyone else below his level so he's completely alone. He's ruining skating for everyone else. Tadashi is the spirit of skating for him. Tadashi is the one that introduced him to skating and led him to fall in love with it as a comfort and an escape from the horrible environment he was being raised in. Skating with Tadashi was his escape. Tadashi was a comfort. But then Adam is found out by his father and Tadashi makes a mistake, but not the one he believes for most of the show. Instead of leading Adam back to the fun of skating, he lets Adam trample it. Rid of it. Put it completely in the background because he blames himself for what happened to Adam that day. And Adam doesn't rid of Tadashi because skating is still a comfort to him, though twisted and abused. He refuses to let it go. To let him go. Tadashi then tries to completely take away skating from Adam and then tries to get Reki to abandon it too. However, Tadashi's broken spirit only fuels Reki's back to life. Then, as he watches the race, Tadashi realizes where he went wrong with Adam. What the true love for skating was, not what Adam thinks it is.

This spirit of skating versus Adam is why Reki's race, Tadashi's presence in the tournament, and why Langa's race are so central. Tadashi including himself in the tournament is Adam being forced to see the dead spirit of skating that he's forgetting and it pisses him off. Reki's race is him directly being pitted against the living embodiment of that spirit of skating and while he does win the race, he still gets his ass beat. He's not stronger than it. Then his race with Langa is where he finally returns to it. Langa is like Adam, but he's fully back to the spirit of skating. He's had his character arc and now Langa helps Adam return to it as someone who experienced to a certain level what Adam is experiencing. Then Langa wins the race and the spirit of skating, the true love of skating, defeats Adam's "love." And Adam leaves the race changed, he remembers the real love of skating, he returns from that darkness he was in. The Adam of their childhood begins to return to Tadashi.

This main conflict in the show that's present in these three relationships is presented so brilliantly and it's what makes Sk8 the Infinity not just another sports anime with some possible queer subtext or baiting. It reminds me of Yuri on Ice and how the relationship to ice skating is reflected in Yuri and Victor's relationship, a show that I absolutely adore (and yes I wept profusely over it when the announcement came out). I desperately hope that Sk8 the Infinity does not receive the same fate because this show has something great that I want to see continued, it's almost a spiritual successor to Yuri on Ice to me.

Now I need the studio to let them lean into the very very very gay tones of these relationships like Yuri on Ice because holy shit all three of them have it. I thought Reki and Langa were going to kiss in the back of that van, Cherry and Joe kept acting like a couple and the english dub only emphasized that, and then that last scene with Adam and Tadashi hello????

Watched Sk8: Extra Part. A few thoughts....

Cherry and Joe both being like, "Ugh, I'm only in high school but I already feel like I can't be passionate about anything," even though they've literally spent all day passionately focused on each other.

Seriously, it's so bad that when they get up from their seats and start shouting and throwing stuff, everyone around them already has a plan for how to keep themselves out of the fight and they do it so casually that you know this happens, like, ALL the time.

Literally everyone at the school is done with them. The other students, the teachers... everyone. They all have seen this song and dance between them play out soooooo many times before that they just find it annoying. The fact that apparently no one at their high school has screamed, "GODS, JUST FUCK ALREADY!!!" at them is the most unbelievable part of this whole episode.

Tadashi sleeping in until the afternoon is also real. *eyes the local time this post is being made*

The way he casually lies to his boss about it suggests he's very adept at lying to his boss.

Loved the contrast between what Tadashi and Ainosuke each see as a "fulfilling day."

On the one hand, if there's a single character in this show that wants everyone to watch them in a gratuitous shower scene, it's ADAM. On the other hand, now I've had to watch ADAM in a gratuitous shower scene.

No one will ever convince me ADAM isn't a creepy-ass freak.

Loved the ending credits. Super-cute. Langa as an elf. Miya with a cat on his shield. 10/10, no notes.

This whole thing is so freaking gay. Gay gay homosexual gay. Gods. They can be categorized as follows: Reki and Langa - May not quite need a room yet but will need one soon; Joe and Cherry - Desperately, deeply, passionately NEED TO GET A FUCKING ROOM; Ainosuke and Tadashi - Probably have multiple rooms at their disposal, may have used every one... more than once... in the kinkiest ways possible.

What even is this show.

Sk8 does a really good job at differentiating between love vs. obsession with the way Adam and Langa’s connection to each other is portrayed vs. how their relationships with Tadashi and Reki are portrayed. Adam and Langa’s scenes together are so loud and dramatic, filled to the brim with over the top romance. Langa literally gets chest pains from skating with Adam, and Adam’s obsession is pretty self-explanatory

But every romantic Renga scene feels so…quiet, yk? Just the two of them, talking to each other very casually or tenderly. It feels way more personal. Even the Tadaai scenes feel very private, they don’t usually say much to each other but soooooooo much tension and emotional turmoil is packed into every line

Idk I just really like that the main relationships all feel so genuine. It’s never some high stakes soulmate connection, but rather two people who happen to be good for each other in all the right ways. That’s also why I like that they made Tadashi the Snake in Adam’s whole biblical metaphor rather than pulling some “he was Adam’s real Eve the whole time” thing

I don’t talk abt Matchablossom much but I feel this way about them too, Joe and Cherry are peak “couple that has been together way too long but don’t have any plans of breaking up any time soon” energy

Maybe this is my brain overthinking things or trying to make connections that aren't really there, but I was thinking about this moment and the name Kojiro says, "Adachi."

Now, my first impression was that they are talking about ADAM, or Ainosuke. But as my brain processes and gushes over the OVA, I had a second thought (which is where the overthinking likely comes in). What if Kojiro is actually talking about Tadashi?

The reasoning behind my first impression was Ainosuke and Adachi start with the same "A" sound, and the flashbacks from Season 1 show that Kojiro and Kaoru skated with and were friends? acquaintances? with Ainosuke. Once Kaoru and Kojiro began skating and became more skilled, I don't think it's a stretch for them to try and find this person to learn from them or hang out with them.

As for my second thought, which may be a bit of a stretch, but the names "Tadashi" and "Adachi" sound more similar overall than Ainosuke and Adachi. Only the beginning T sound and the "chi" instead of a "shi" differ. Plus, if the duo overheard the name or through word of mouth, it's possible some of the letters/sounds got lost.

The other description to this skater who Kojiro thinks is named "Adachi" is that they are "crazy good." While ADAM is definitely regarded and described as such during Season 1, with his performances during S and the flashbacks supporting this description too, it is Tadashi who more or less taught Ainosuke everything he knows.

In Snake's beef with Miya, the crowd's chatter literally causes Miya to say that the crowd's talking about Snake as if he were ADAM. Even though Joe and Cherry's portion of OVA takes place in the past, there is precedence within the world of SK8 that Tadashi and ADAM's skating style is incredibly similar (again because of their mentor/mentee like relationship in skating).

And there is where it gets a little speculative for me, but what if the skater Kojiro is referring to here, is Tadashi, but who they end up meeting, and befriending, is Ainosuke.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't know the full extent of Tadashi's life at Shindo manor or how long he's worked as part of their family. But, if he is truly just a "servant's child," not a lot of attention would likely be paid if he was leaving the manor to go skate. Away from the manor, Tadashi and his skill could have built a reputation in the local skate scene. Still not wanting to get caught, Tadashi may have worn another cap or hoodie or something to conceal his identity.

However, between this moment in the OVA and when Kaoru and Kojiro finally meet ADAM for the first time, Tadashi moves from just a servant's child to becoming a servant or worker himself. And because of this, he no longer has as much freedom to leave the manor, as well as dealing with a larger burden to not be "caught" skating as an employee of the Shindo family. So, Tadashi is somewhat forced to leave the local skating scene.

As this happens though, Ainosuke begins sneaking out and skating with a concealed identity. With such a similar skating style, people may not question if it's the same skater. Or, in not knowing Tadashi's true identity, no one bothers asking who exactly this new skater is. Ainosuke's skills causes him to maintain Tadashi's status or rise in prominence, overshadowing Tadashi's legacy. Until eventually, two new, talented (and not boring at all) skaters emerge and finally meet with Ainosuke. And, after watching him skate, because his style is so similar to Tadashi, Kojiro and Kaoru don't spare a second thought that ADAM may not be the person who they originally heard about, accepting Ainosuke as the "crazy good" skater people talked about.

Sorry - you DON’T think Adam is a creep?: a Study on Why Eve is Romantic

Within the anime Sk8 the Infinity, there is possibly one topic more taboo and controversial than any other. This topic is the accusation of Adam potentially being a pedophile due to viewing Eve as a romantic partner and proceeding to pursue Langa as his Eve. Some people believe that Eve is just meant to be the perfect skateboarding partner, whilst others take a darker route of thinking when watching the show and looking at the subcontext, believing that Adam sees Eve as more than just platonic and instead as romantic. This essay will be diving into reasons why it appears Adam sees Eve as a romantic partner, rather than just a skateboarding partner as there are real reasons for this view - as disturbing as it is. These reasons include the implications of Adam and Eve as chosen nicknames, his strong love motif - especially romantic love imagery, and his actual actions towards Langa, who he believes to be his Eve.

The first point to be discussed is the fact that he calls himself Adam while claiming he’s looking for his Eve. There is no way to get around the biblical allusions that he’s making with these titles, the fandom recognizes this to the point where the ship name between Adam and Langa is Eden - which, by the way, super creepy that they’re a ship. But, the point is, that Adam calling himself Adam and saying he’s looking for his Eve has romantic implications. Adam and Eve were the perfect pair, Eve being quite literally made for Adam, and were together romantically. They were husband and wife, they had children together, they lost their place in Eden together - Adam and Eve hold a deep romantic history. So, for Sk8 the Infinity to have Adam be a character who is looking for his Eve, his perfect partner, it feels like it has deeper implications than just skateboarding. It feels less like Adam wants the ultimate skateboarding partner, but instead the person who can join him in every aspect of his life, someone who he can possess because of their perfect compatibility. Adam chose the moniker of Adam and Eve, and he did so purposefully. While some may view it as him just searching for the perfect partner, these names may hint to a deeper intent - a bigger desire.

The next issue is his strong love motif. To start with, his secondary title is “the Matador of Love”. While Adam is his primary name at S, this secondary name is brought up multiple times, and it just furthers his character being associated with love. He’s out here with anything that could be seen as love themed, and when translated matador means killer. This nickname feels like he could be claiming he’s the killer of love, but specifically that he’s killing two things - other’s love of skateboarding, but also love that sprouts up that would take attention from him. Both of these are seen with how he interacts with Reki the most, as he outright tries to destroy Reki’s relationship with Langa, while also beating out his love of skateboarding through their first match. So, Adam being called the “Matador of Love” has both meaning with the killer theme, but also ties to the references to love that the titles of his moves show to be romantic. The two skateboarding moves that Adam frequently uses are called “Love Hug” and “Full-Swing Kiss”. These names are deliberate, and are shown as romantic in different ways. The first is the “Love Hug”, where he literally grabs and hugs his opponent, dipping them - almost like a dance. The hold of it is reminiscent of the dips done in dances such as the tango, the salsa, ballroom dances, and probably so many more. While dancing is of course able to be platonically, it can also be a very romantic and couple bonding type activity as well, and this move being called the “Love Hug” just makes it feel like it pushes not only his love theme, but also the romantic side of it. The second move is outright called the “Full-Swing Kiss”, and yeah, people kiss their friends and family, but that doesn’t make this move any less sinister sounding when it’s done by Adam. When added to everything else about his love motif appearing romantic, even the name of this move being the “Full-Swing Kiss” should be called out.

The third thing pairs with his name of “the Matador of Love”, which is his costume. Adam wears a very showy and traditional matador look, which is stunning, but the design all lines up with his love theme. For starters, the costume is a beautiful shade of red - the colour associated with not only danger and power, but also romantic love, passion, and desire. Not as innocent sounding with those last three meanings, as while matador costumes traditionally can be red, there were also other colours they could be. To have it red, the colour of romantic love, could be another hint that Adam’s quest for Eve is actually romantic, as he dresses himself in the colour of desire. It doesn’t help that there are numerous hearts on Adam’s costume, with the most prominent being on his mask, his shoes, and potentially on his belt. The belt one isn’t as clear, and maybe it isn’t actually a heart, but it does hold some resemblance of one. The ones on his mask are very clear though, especially when Adam’s face is animated close up, the hearts are just beneath his eyes. The other clear hearts are on the top of his shoes. In a way too deep read into these hearts, one could potentially say that the heart placements are meant to show that he’s searching for his love, his Eve. Eyes for watching out for his love, his feet for always wandering until he finds them. The hearts are also done in red, on top of white and black respectively, making them very much the romance heart vibes. The second big colour within Adam’s costume is gold, which is getting a shoutout because it is a pretty popular colour for wedding rings. While not all wedding rings are gold, they are the most classic metal for them, and paired with the hearts and use of red, the gold does feel notable.

The last part of the love motif is Adam’s skateboard itself. This beautifully sinister skateboard has romance written all over it. The top of the skateboard has the word “love” written on top, as well as a clear heart on the back. It’s done in a shade of pink that looks like amaranth - which is a cool red-pink colour. This just continues Adam’s theme of using colours associated with love, as pink is also a colour used for love. The bottom is where it gets really interesting though, as it’s got numerous hearts on it, all done in the same pink colour, as well as one in the center that has swords through it. Even more convincing that Adam’s whole motif is specifically romantic love is the fact that right under that heart is a banner that reads “may death do us part” - a very traditional wedding vow. Again, Adam and Eve are seen as a romantic couple, they’re also commonly considered to be married as they’re literally made for each other. So, to have a wedding vow on his skateboard really does push the idea that Adam is looking for someone who would be the perfect romantic partner, not just the perfect skateboarding partner.

The final point is Adam himself - his actual actions and words. One of the bigger things that Adam does at one point is give a massive bouquet of red roses to Langa. Red roses are romance as an object, everyone knows that red roses are traditional to gift to a romantic partner. They symbolise romantic love, passion, desire, they’re used on Valentines day and at weddings for people to give to whoever they’re romantically involved with. Adam giving Langa red roses, right before they race, is incredibly blunt as a way to say that he’s interested in love when it comes to Langa - who he considers his Eve at that point. If Adam wanted to convey platonic love, he could’ve used pink roses (symbolising admiration, innocent love, grace, and happiness) or - even better - yellow roses (which outright symbolise friendship, as well as joy). The big bouquet of red roses, paired with the way that Adam seems to view races as a courting ritual, screams that he wants to actually pursue Langa. The second big red flag is their first meeting. Adam didn’t need to get that close to Langa to show him the proper footing, rather - he could have just demonstrated it for him. He could have pointed it out, Adam didn’t have to lean in, and correct it, get so close to the seventeen year old. Adam not outright touching Langa does not make that interaction any less creepy. And, as previously mentioned, Adam appears to think of skating against someone to be a courting ritual of sorts. What gives this away is the time he outright tells Miya that he falls in love with all of his skating partners, and to make it creepier, he claims that Miya was a bud who hadn’t blossomed yet, and that was why Adam had yet to fall for him. That whole interaction with Miya is awful, but has some damning evidence that points to Adam viewing Eve romantically. He claims to fall in love with those he skates with, and he’s searching for his perfect skateboarding partner, Eve. 

Overall, the evidence lines up. While everyone can interpret a character differently, there is weight to the interpretation that Adam views Eve, and therefore Langa, as a love interest. From his chosen moniker of Adam claiming he’s searching for Eve, to his entire love motif in names and his costume, to finally his actions and words. All of it creepily hinting toward Adam searching for a dream romance with his Eve, the perfect skateboarding partner, but also more to him. The way he acts towards Langa is even worse when framed in this way, as it makes Adam someone who’s interested in a seventeen year old boy when he’s well into his twenties. Adam as a character gives off bad vibes in general, and none of this helps his case of innocence. So while yes, people can see a character in different lights, some people will take off the rose-tinted lenses, read deeper into the sub-context, and see Adam as a probable pedophile who is outright pursuing a teenager, and people with this view shouldn’t be hated on just for interpreting a character in a darker way.

SO (sorry i was gone i'm back to YAPPING)

who the FUCK is out here thinking reki had absolutely NO growth through the first season of sk8??? I saw a post talking about how even though he is the main character we "never see any development" regarding him and i just need to tell people who believe that: you are wrong.

Listen, reki is the main character™ so let me recount some things for us all.

first thing that comes to mind: when he is experiencing the jealousy that comes from the insecurity of being left behind, but he still shows up to see Langa race Joe. He still calls out to langa, and we see that even though he was insecure and feeling left behind he STILL came to support someone. he then sees that video talking about the guy who created the track shoes that were being worn and thinks it's stupid. that if he can't be at the top of skating, he shouldn't even skate anymore. he should just give up his dream bc a couple people are better than him. He has the talk with his manager that even if you aren't the MOST talented that doesn't mean you can't be involved and Reki still isn't quite there yet. I believe it was Joe who reminded reki that they are all on different levels and reki gets pulled into the beef with Adam. NOW the beef with Adam we see Reki trying to bridge the gap. He wants it so bad. it's not that he's not a great skater, because he is, but i think it comes from the general lack of self-love/self-confidence that held him back for a couple of things. HOWEVER he avoids Adam's moves, he literally JUMPS off the side and FLIPS (something he had never done before!) reki NEARLY wins and he would've if his board hadn't snapped!!! He embarrassed Adam!! something no one else had done!!!

the second thing: We see Reki become okay with not being the absolute best of the best and how he is a great skater, in his own way. (this starts to show in the race with Adam and then at the end we see it REALLY show) sure it may take him a little longer to learn a trick or something but he still learns it. he still loves skating. he redefines his LOVE of the sport not because he's the best of the best but because he actually has a support system in skating instead of before when he had no friends who shared the interest (you know, aside from a previous friend who could no longer skate) and its the story of even if you aren't as great as someone else you know, its still okay to do things for FUN and hanging out.

like this idea haunts all of us. for example: singing? most people are fine singers!!! but because they don't sing like Beyonce or Billie Eilish, suddenly they shouldn't sing for fun bc "they can't make a job out of it" like, the same for reki. Joe, Cherry, and Shadow are all adults who have lives outside of skating but for a CHILD it's the only thing for them at this point in their life, they are still trying to figure out who they are. its crucial to teens. Reki's not getting on a national team, he can't build a career out of actually skating so does that mean he shouldn't enjoy it? no!!! he works at the skate shop, he's really talented at building the boards, designing them, and understanding what will help individual people the best!! that's more than anyone else in the S community that we see actively skating.

Anyway, reki has so much growth in not only his skating but in his mental health but because it's not as flashy as Langa's or Adam's, people overlook it and downplay it.

Who founded S, and when?

In episode 4 of SK8's dub, Reki refers to Joe and Cherry as "founders" of S, and this has led to a pretty widespread conception in the English-speaking fandom that the two of them were... well, S's founders alongside Adam, that it started when the three of them were in school, that they're still involved in it on a managerial level, or even claims that they founded it first and Adam stole it after the fact.

But what is actually being said here?

It's the word "初期メンバー" that was translated as "founders" in the dub, and while it can mean "founding members", in a sense, there is no implication in the word 初期 of actively being involved in creating something, simply that they were the earliest members (it means "in the initial stage.")

Even more telling is Reki's use of みんな - he's talking about a larger group than two people here. He's not setting Joe and Cherry apart as "founders", he's counting everyone who skated at S at the beginning as "初期メンバー" and namedropping the two characters from that era whose names we know and who are going to be significant to the story. (This reference to "everyone" establishing that there's a larger group going unnamed is also cut from the dub; instead Reki says "Cherry, Joe... man, I bet they'd love to go off about that guy.")

Conversely, looking at how Adam is described...

...it's pretty straightforward.

He's also described in his profile on the official website (and consistently in other official sources that use these character profiles) as 創設者, which does mean founder, explicitly referring to "the person who first established something."

Cherry and Joe, meanwhile, are both referred to as Sの実力者のうちの1人, or "one of the big names at S." They're certainly both respected, influential people within the community - recognition they've earned, not something they're set apart for in any "official" capacity. They've never been described in an official source as 創設者, or in any other way that would indicate they were involved in S's creation rather than simply being two powerful people in the community as it exists now.

There are a few other details that tie into establishing this - mainly disproving the notion that Adam stole something already existing. In episode 5, as they're fleeing from the police, Tadashi says this...

...indicating that Crazy Rock was part of a regular police patrol route before Adam was able to use his money/influence to have it removed, something that Cherry and Joe (particularly years ago, when Cherry wouldn't have had the money he's earning now) would not have had the power to do.

And in episode 12, when discussing the change in course, Joe says this:

Literally saying "it became banned", this is wording on Joe's part that would make no sense for a decision he was involved in. He's describing this as something that happened totally separate from him. Early enough that the funeral course was still being used, Joe (and presumably also Cherry) were not making calls about the management of S like this.

There's also a relevant quote from SK8's screenwriter, Ichiro Okouchi:

When considering Adam as a character, I thought he would need someone beside him. If Kikuchi wasn't there, Adam would become a character who would do nothing but talk to himself, and it would be difficult for Adam to manage S alone.

Part of Tadashi's entire conceptualization as a character was because without him, Adam would be running S alone. Early enough in the development in the series that Tadashi hadn't properly been created yet, S was imagined as something solely belonging to Adam.

Adam is S's founder; Joe and Cherry were simply in the initial group of members, along with other people who haven't yet been named.

Additionally, from only a few pieces of dialog it's possible to narrow down when Adam started S - and it wasn't during the DK era. When Joe interrupts Reki in episode 4, he says this:

Adam, Joe and Cherry are all 26 years old (25 going on 26, in Cherry's case; he hasn't actually had his birthday by the end of season 1, but this is normal for how ages are listed for anime characters.) Seven years ago would have been the end of their last year of high school (Adam, as the oldest of the three of them, would have turned 19 just over a month after graduating high school.)

When Adam skated with Joe and Cherry was seven years ago, before he left for America, and he hasn't accepted any of their challenges since he returned to Japan. In Joe's words, this time skating together was "way before S started."

So, all together:

For some time in high school, Adam, Joe and Cherry all skated together as a group (sometimes with some other friends/gang members.) Seven years before SK8 season 1 takes place, Adam was sent away to America by his father, ending his friendship with Joe and Cherry. Some time after that (presumably upon his father's death,) he returned to Japan and founded S with Tadashi to assist him in managing it, using his influence to remove the abandoned mine from regular police patrols to protect it, and Joe and Cherry were among a larger initial group of skaters who competed at the time. Since then, he's never agreed to a beef with Joe or Cherry despite them challenging him many times, so neither of them have skated with him since S started.

TL;DR - Adam is the person who started S and he and Tadashi were always conceptualized as the only people running it, and the idea that Adam, Joe and Cherry founded it as a trio comes from a mistranslation in the dub.

well i finished sk8 the infinity lol. i didn't realize it was only 12 episodes

whelp, here are my thoughts:

- first episode: kinda goofy but i like it. i like Reki's all-over-the-place personality contrasted with Langa's mellow one (sun and moon, cough, cough). Also, Shokichi (the manager at the skate shop) and Hawks from MHA have the same English VA lol (yes, this is what stood out to me during the first episode)

- Reki reminds me of Dot from Mashle--yes, maybe it's the red hair and head band but also a little bit of the personality lol

- Joe has the same English VA as Ogasawara from Sasaki and Miyano lol

- love how open Reki is with just going to hug Langa after he wins against Miya

- and how he emphasizes friendship and the love of skating rather than winning

- eww Adam is creepy, reminds me of Hisoka

- i like how Shadow and Miya are helping Langa and Reki against Adam, united against a common foe

- i love how intense this is lol so goofy

- lol Reki having nightmares about Langa getting hurt when racing Adam

God bless the person who took the time to write the spoilers but there is nothing written about Shadow ahahaha poor guy. The girlies aren’t here for your one-sided crush, Hiromi (no idea what happens but I’m assuming it’s about his manager, who we need a name for!!) Honestly would be so great if this story ended with a role reversal of Hiromi discovering he has a secret admirer from S (or Oka) but again, no idea.

Miya and Koyomi being cute together, the fans predicted it in many fics, since they’re closer in age and both bratty lol, and she’s kind of like Reki but younger so of course Miya would adore her. But, she’s 11, if I was Reki I would also protect my lil sis.

I bet Koyomi is a Chihayafuru girlie (shoujo anime about Karuta that’s pretty good!)

Renga being cute, the fans will be happy!

There’s also a mention of little Reki carrying his friend on his back, but it’s unclear if that’s the same friend we briefly see in season 1 flashbacks. I think it might be significant if it is because we know season 2 is in production. So maybe they will finally introduce that character. I would love to see that character brought into the mix and bringing some conflict with him (jealous Langa please).

I’m not really a Matchablossom girlie, (sorry majority of sk8 fans). Although I love them, I would trade their story for any glimpses into their family/home life or first meeting/learning how to skate together in an instant over a homoerotic hair whiff.

Okay, and then we have Adam and Tadashi! Our spoiler person alludes to not knowing how the ova is rated G because apparently we get a scene of Ainosuke in some state of undress. I don’t know what this means. Do we get a butt shot? I guess we have to wait and find out. Love or hate Adam he exists for you to look at disrespectfully.

Oh! And we learn Adam still rides horses? Love that for him. Kind of. He probably only does it to please the aunties.

So Tadashi just sleeps all day in this short? Good for him, good for him. Although the creators mentioned in an interview something about seeing a different side of his character and I really hope there’s more to it than that.

We only know of some possible gay hair touching between tadaai from the spoilers, but we know from the trailers that there are scenes of Tadashi and Adam at S, seemingly alone because Adam doesn’t wear his mask. I was really hoping they would finally race together but I think the spoilers would have mentioned something that exciting, so probably not.

And there are some crumbs for edenshippers, which, not a fan of, but I didn’t come to beef with anyone. They are fictional anime characters and you can play with your Barbie’s however you want! (Except for that one weirdo on tumblr who sent a message to a literal minor who was uncomfortable with Eden, telling them that Langa was Adam’s Eve. Ya’ll. Read the room. Don’t advertise your ship to those who have already mentioned they are uncomfortable with it and don’t act like Adam and harass minors.)

Reki why are you screaming in Japa-lish? Is Langa teaching Reki English? Like, beyond this correcting of best vs favourite? I like to headcanon that Langa helps Reki with English and Reki helps Langa with Japanese.

Maybe they have study sessions. And reward each other with kisses for jobs well done.

Miya calling Reki a drama queen, while Reki is just screaming kills me.

I wonder what Reki's parents were up to that he had to babysit an entire Saturday? Did Langa hang out with him at all, or were they apart a whole day?

Action. Fucking ACTION, my god. Loathe that shit from the DEPTHS of my bones. If I could take action out back and shoot it, I would :)

For the love of fucking god, if you're gonna write ENTIRE dialogue and not just one line, do your goddamn research. DON'T JUST GOOGLE TRANSLATE THAT SHIT. IF YOU CAN'T EVEN BE BOTHERED TO SEE IF THE SENTENCE IS CORRECT THEN AT THAT POINT JUST WRITE IT IN ENGLISH AND SAY "HE SAID IN [LANGUAGE]". IT'S ESP ATROCIOUS WITH NON-LATIN-BASED LANGUAGES LIKE ARABIC (LOOKING AT YOU FUCKING ISHVALAN AUS).

(Edward Elric would NOT speak in perfect fancy-ass formal dialect, that nobody native actually fucking uses either??? He'd have the most EGYPTIAN ASS DIALECT. Hell, I'll take Jordanian too!)

9/10 times, we can TELL it's google translate, okay. It's stiff and formal and translates LITERALLY rather than contextually. And half the time it's also just fucking wrong. Languages aren't just your damn vehicles to make a fic ✨diverse✨, they're CULTURES. LANGUAGES ARE CULTURES, AND YOU ARE BUTCHERING THEM.

hi let’s talk about Adam and Tadashi’s writing and why they are extremely important characters in sk8

i would like it to be clear that I am not justifying Adam’s actions because he is an awful person and does not deserve good things, i’m just here to ramble about how he’s written ‼️

in a series where the main message is a passion for skating, Adam and Tadashi are at the opposite extreme ends of that spectrum. someone who has so much passion but interprets it SO wrong, vs someone with anti-passion for skating an actively tries to get people to quit.

out of everyone’s character designs being very colorful and vibrant, Tadashi’s color palette is muted and his skating outfit isn’t remarkable .this is soooo intended because it shows his lack of passion, how one of the most talented skaters who quite literally inspired the idea of S refuses to skate.

Tadashi’s skating style has so much originality and flare, he’s almost performing a dance on his board, it’s unlike anything else and there is so much LIFE to it. Adam tried to copy this style but I’d say he failed - at the end of the day, he resorts to hitting people over the head with his board to beat them.

(also Adam’s whole thing about having a romantic skating style, it being a ritual of love, yeah that’s because he adopted his style from their time skating together)

the way Adam was raised is a heavy reflection on his current behavior. we know he was physically abused and taught that to love someone is to destroy them.

it’s likely his aunts kept him isolated inside the home and didn’t allow him to have any other human contact — which is part of why he was so drawn to Tadashi, the only other child he knew, as well as why he never questioned the path he spiraled down.

(also do we see how Tadashi is bathed in light here, similar to the scene where Langa avoids his love hug move? as in Langa restored his passion for skating but this passion has become distorted and harmful?)

it’s clear he loved Tadashi but expresses it in the worst way possible, in how he was taught, by hurting and isolating/controlling him. Adam mistakes love for fear and adrenaline, because he misunderstands how the people in his life treated him.

he is likely directing his expressions of love (hope he dies painfully and burns forever btw) towards the young skaters in a reflection of how the adults in his life treated him as a child. which is brutally fucked up. also all the biblical references in his skating persona show how his aunts were probably very religious.

first of all, kills his aunts with lasers from my mind! secondly, i think Adam should have a harsh awakening and come to this realization himself. he needs to see Reki and Langa experiencing healthy forms of love, connect this to what happened in his childhood and realize that what he experienced was not love but abuse.

i think this was what they meant to do in the season 1 finale but they fucked it up and that is not at all closure for his character, since the difference made was small.

he needs to have an in-depth reflection on what was done to him and what he did to others in return, before giving a heartfelt apology and turning himself into the police (for the illegal skate ring and attempted murder stuff) (which seems like a major plot point for season 2 given that it was vaguely touched upon in the first season)

i just need Adam to say goodbye to Tadashi . going from controlling him under the name of love, to loving him enough to let him go and see him move on. this is important to me okay.

although i do think Adam, for how fucked up he is, has gone back and reflected on the way he treats people - namely Tadashi. he has tried to process his feelings but ultimately hasn’t grasped the bigger picture.

Adam comes up with the idea for a technique-based S during the ova scene where he’s with Tadashi - he’s likely recalling memories of when Tadashi used to skate, being not only his original inspiration but the first positive rolemodel in his life and a skater he admired.

with the theme of S changing to a technique-based rating, Tadashi may find his skating style again and embrace that uniqueness he’s lost overtime .perhaps even having a race against Adam? (with the name of a “dog show” foreshadowing Tadashi playing a major role? i just need him to have big character moments i’m biased i love Tadashi dearly)

anyways i have many, many thoughts about these two and am stoked to see what’s going to happen in upcoming content :3

- itafushi: literally my number one ship ever. they make me so fucking emo. the tragedy of what couldn’t have been prevented. i pray for itafushi moments in the jjk manga but every time it happens it is somehow worse than the last. peace 🙏

- yutamaki: they mean so much to me. i love them both platonically and romantically! their moments in jjk0 are super sweet and i love that they’re always supporting each other 🥹

- satosugu: this is a ship i’ll put in a blender. i don’t usually think of them but when i do i want to throw up blood. they’re the cause of all my problems. i love them. they are so my tears ricochet core

other ships i like are nobamaki, inuokko, and mechamiwa! perks of being a multishipper lol

- shin soukoku: MY YIN YANG DUO!! they are the dumbest. somehow they bulldozed past all the normal stages of dating and went straight to dying for each other. who does that.

- kunichuuzai: i’m cheating here because i love all individual pairings in this ship AND the poly ship. especially kunichuu which crept up on me and slapped me in the face. chuuya being downbad for kunikida is GREAT. they are so good when you dont have toxic shippers breathing in your ear about how one is better than the other ❤️

- tachigin: do u ever think about how they’re both liars. how they both have a hidden identity. how they both found family within the mafia not as the person they really are, but as the person they pretended to be. how the betrayal felt like when tachihara dropped his mask. OUGH

i also really like ranpoe and atsulucy! and beast!akutagawa x beast!tanizaki is cute too

- hualian: how can i not include the most romantic (and canon) pair EVER. get you someone who loves you like hua cheng loves xie lian because holy SHIT. i have not read the books (only watched the donghua) and yet these two make me feral i need them to hurry it up and get married already 😭

- veracxa: sorry one more. VERACXA IS SO GOOD AND SO UNDERRATED. lance and veronica having the same taste is so funny. also love that veronica went out of her way to make acxa feel welcome. and their matching judgy stares. the older sister and sister in law. i KNOW lance was sweating
