from mag 11 - "dreamer" and elias and jon's descriptions in 92 and 160
i don't know if this is anything, but the whole pulsing institute with veins flowing into/out of it really stood out to me as obvious beating heart imagery. and the archives being covered in blood, the blood which flows through the death tendrils, seems to be marking the archives/archivist as the site from which all that death is originating (and then covering and choking all of london) āwhich is what happens in 160 when jonah uses jon to bring about the apocalypse. could be wrong, but this particular dream feels like it's referencing the deaths the upcoming apocalypse will cause (including oliver's reveal in 168 that everyone and everything will die anyway) āin addition to it being about gertrude's death, because gertrude's death was the immediate catalyst for the entire podcast (allowed elias to confirm his theory re the feasibility of rituals targeting individual fears and then replace her with jon on the same day, that is)

I find it interesting that the fandom portrays Tim as the prankster when he is the only archival assistant Jon trusts not to have written the statement in MAG 11 as a prank. He is a professional!

Ok Johnny definitely did this on purpose right?
āIf youāre listening to this, it means Iām dead. And you have been chosen to be my replacement as Head Archivistā¦
āIt is very important to be absolutely clear this is not a joke. Nor is it any sort of prank, or game. Your colleagues have not convinced me to record this as an attempt to⦠haze you. This is completely serious. And very, very important for you to know.ā
- Gertrude Robinson, tma ep 161: Dwelling
ā[Eliasā] exact phrase was that she ādied in the line of dutyā, which I had assumed meant having a stroke at her desk or something similarā¦ā
āI donāt entirely trust the others not to have written it as a practical joke and slipped it into the archivesā¦Itās almost certainly a joke, a bit of hazing for the new boss, maybe?ā
- Jonathan Sims, tma ep 11: Dreamer

Magnus Archives Relisten 11, MAG 11 Dreamer
If someone came to my place of work proclaiming they had a prophetic dream about my death I would simply believe them. RIP to Gertrude but I'm just built different ig.
MAG 11 analysis, spoilers ahead!
Facts: Statement of "Antonio Blake" regarding his dreams of Gertrude Robinson, Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute (Head Archivist is another odd and foreshadowing usage of proper nouns in the transcript). Statement given March 14th, 2015.
Statement Notes: Oliver I love you but I also hate you so so much.
It's so strange relistening to this statement. On my first listen, I was very sympathetic to "Antonio." He was this innocent man who suddenly developed psychic abilities that tormented him. Even in 121 when he describes what he did on the voyage to Point Nemo, he seems to be driven by fear and desperation. But knowing what happens after Point Nemo and who he becomes in the Eyepocalypse, I wonder how much influence the power of the End had on him. As Jon develops his abilities, he becomes less confident in "normal" social situations, but more confident and stronger in dangerous horror-based scenarios. This seems true with Blake/Banks as well. He's very nervous as his abilities are developing when he tries to talk to Gertrude or Jennifer from Grifter's Bone. As he becomes more attuned with his abilities and gives in to his desires, he becomes more powerful, shown when he is strong and devoid of emotion enough to kill the actual Dr. Pritchard. He becomes strongest when he "gives in" to the End, being most clear and charming as he gives his statement in 121 and the Coroner's Report in 168. Just being able to track this change so clearly from this first statement to the last speaks not only to Jonny Sims skills for character development, but also the power of the Entities to draw out the worst in a person.
Blake describes his dream world as an "overexposed" or "washed out" photograph. The fading imagery was very profound and strong to me. Death is a fear, a horror represented by the black tendrils, but also a simple force of nature, slowly sucking life and color from all things. Unstoppable.
I don't know why I'm harping on this, but I can't understand why Blake's dreams always begin at the top of Canary Wharf. Does that come up again in the show? Is it personally significant to Blake?
Character Notes: I already got into Blake, so my other main character concern for this episode is Gertrude.
Did she ever see this statement?
Did she simply miss it? Was she busy and didn't get a chance to look at it before it was too late? Did she read it and attempt to prepare? She was smart. She knew which statements were real and which weren't. She would have understood what Blake was capable of. Did she attempt to prepare and defend herself but just couldn't manage it? Did Elias hide it from her? Did she read it and just accept the inevitable?
But of course, I have to bring up the Graham mention. I always thought the Graham/Oliver ship was just a fun fan thing, but I didn't realize Oliver had broken up with a Graham in cannon. Moreover, I didn't realize that it was confirmed to be Graham Folger until reading about the Season 5 Q&A when working on this post.
This raises an interesting point about original Graham. Blake describes having a mental breakdown due to his job, and Amy Patel describes her office job degrading her mental health as well. Is there something about Graham that attracts people losing their minds in an office? While it could be something spooky, I do understand why people stuck in mind-numbing careers would be drawn to someone with the time and resources to explore what he actually wants to do with his life, rather than what he has to do.
Entity Alignment: This is very clearly an End episode. I very much believe that, while he may not be the most powerful or dangerous avatar in the series, Oliver Banks was one of the most deeply connected to his entity. His psyche, his spirit, and his physical body were all so entrenched in death. It's interesting that there is no "inciting incident" that causes Graham to become an avatar of the End, as usually there is one event that acts as the root of an avatar's development. You could possibly argue it was his mental health breakdown, but that seems unrelated to death or anything associated with the End.

Back with Re-listenings of S1 of TMA
Today's episode is MAG 11 Dreamer
Antonio (Oliver Banks) mentions his breakup with his boyfriend Graham.
By timeline this was supposed to happen around 2006. The same time MAG 3 happened. Is this the same Graham?
Oliver did your relationship ended because of the Stranger??? Am I getting this correctly?
To clarify this is a headcanon, it is not supported by anything other than same names and dates. It is a fun idea tho.

MAG11 - Dreamer, review and stuff
Diversity wins! The guy who dreamed about your death is gay!
I was hesitant to write this one because I didn't know where to start. Not because it isn't good, I love every single episode of The Magnus Archives, this whole exercise (reviews etc) brings up a few questions to me, what's the point of consuming horror media if I am not scared by it? Can I truly review it if I'm not scared?
And, in relation to MAG11, is death scary?
Well, personally I find the horror genre intriguing, and highly dramatic. It's a dark fantasy that you won't have the chance to experience in real life (or at least, I hope so xD). TMA plays with probability, rather than impossibility, even if there are some fantastic elements in the mix. Every episode is a promise, or a threat, horror and fear would find you anywhen and anywhere. Not even the Dreamer is safe from this promise.
Can I review the hell out it? Yep, yes I can. I can be objective, and I can analyze how well constructed everything is. Have you ever reached episode 200 and made a relisten? Do it, you won't regret it.
Death is scary, is the only certainty in life and at the same time, is paradoxically, uncertain. Everything ends, that much we know, and Antonio Blake doesn't seem to think there's nothing after.
I always think about this quote from Doctor Who when thinking about death, maybe it's useful for you

(Transcript: Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor in The Return of Doctor Mysterio, "Things end. That's all. Everything ends and it's always sad. But everything begins again too and that's always happy. Be happy.)
And talking about quotes, let's comment some bits from the episode:
"Iād broken up with Graham,Ā my boyfriend of six years (...)" - Antonio Blake, March 14th 2015
Yes, yes, weird thing to remark, but hear me out: Graham? Graham?? Is the same Graham as in Graham Folger????
"It was there, sleeping on my friend Anahitaās sofa, in the depths of my misery, that I first started to have the dreams." - Also Mr Blake
Woah, take a seat misery etc, I'm this dramatic too
"I found myself standing atop the very peak of Canary Wharf and overlooking the Barclays building where I had spent so many hateful hours. Behind me I could feel the pulsing beat of the light that stands atop that looming tower; it thrummed through me and I could see the glow pass across my skin like oil but, try as I might, I could not turn around to look at it." - I don't know why it's so appealing.

I tried to recreate it with a screenshot from Google Earth and Photoshop, the result doesn't convince me but it's pretty close xD
"Lucid dreaming has never been a skill Iāve possessed, and I generally get swept along in the current of whatever runs though my sleeping consciousness." - I love it when horror characters get logical, like, uhm, this shouldn't be possible, sir, this is a Wendy's
"And by my estimation he had appeared about ten days before his death. I tell you this because I feel you have a right to know the sort of timescales that weāre dealing with here." - Antonio "may as well just roll with it" Blake
He is so chill about all of this, isn't he? Like, yeah, I have this weird ass powers, I figured out more or less how they work and hey, you're next
"Iām well aware that I donāt even know your name, and I have no responsibility to try and prevent whatever fate is coming for you." - Antonio "I'm doing it anyway because I'm that chill and cool" Blake
"At the very least, you should look into appointing a successor." - LMAO
"Ā I have no idea if Gertrude got the chance to read this statement before she passed away, but if anyone comes in ranting about dreaming my death, then I very much want to hear about it." - Jon "anything is bs except Leitners and prophecies about my death" Sims, April 15th 2016
Sir, with all due respect, wtf
General overview:
Vibe: it's mysterious with a side of peace and quiet
Horror: spooky, just plain old good spooky
Audio: pretty ASMR in general
Humour: Jon, why are u like this
Score: 10/10

MAG 10, Vampire Killer
Trevor was 13 when his father died, in 1956; the statement was given in 2010, so he was 67, making him roughly 77 when he died.
āWhile I have witnessed them avoid direct sunlight if possible, and wear generally more covering clothes when moving around during the daytime, they seem to have no significant problem doing so.ā Is there a reason for them to avoid sunlight? I really donāt think vampires are Dark.
āI just lay there watching as its stomach began to distend and swell, the now bulbous belly straining against the black dress it wore.ā Iāve seen it theorized that vampires are Web, and this does remind me of the descriptions of Mr. Spider.
āI certainly donāt believe in wild tales of vampirism, but I canāt help but notice that the statement above appears to be a photocopy of a photocopy, and canāt find these supposed vampire teeth anywhere in the Archives or the Secure Containment Room.ā Where are the teeth?
To be honest, Iām not really sure what entity the vampires are, like I said theyāre theorized to be Web, but I see an argument for Flesh or Slaughter. Trevor is a Hunter.
MAG 11, Dreamer
āIt was there, sleeping on my friend Anahitaās sofa, in the depths of my misery, that I first started to have the dreams.ā I wonder why The End picked him, most statements have some explanation why they encountered an entity, but Oliver was just trying to sleep.
Another John this episode, John Uzel.
āIt was your face and the expression upon it was far more fearful than any I had seen in eight years of wandering this twilight city.ā We literally hear Gertrude die, and I donāt think she was that scared. Also, poor Oliver, dude hasnāt slept well in eight years.
āI had Tim look into it, as I donāt entirely trust the others not to have written it as a practical joke and slipped it into the archives.ā Sometimes, I think about this too much.
The dreams are End.
MAG 12, First Aid
āI followed him asked what he was he was doing. I got no answer, but he seemed to know the code to the door immediately and strode right in, scanning the shelves for something.ā I wonder how aligned Gerry was with The Eye, not enough to save him, but enough to Know some things, it seems.
āI just stood there and watched as he took out the scalpel, muttered some words I couldnāt make out, and plunged the blade into the centre of the chanting manās throat.ā Does he actually have to say something to be able to kill him? Or is he just being dramatic?
āAdmittedly, if Martin speaks Polish in the same way he āspeaks Latin,ā then he might be talking nonsense again, but Iāve looked it up and it appears to check out.ā Does Martin actually speak Polish? Also, I wonder if Jon knows Latin, he seems like the sort that would.
The unnamed man is Desolation, Diego Molina, I think; Gerry's Eye.
MAG 13, Alone
The first live statement giver, and, right off the bat, she insults the institute.
Jon was originally going to leave her to make her statement, I wonder if he chose to stick around for the later ones, or they all asked him to stay. Maybe Elias made him stay with the statement givers.
I'm guessing Evan never actually died, just "starved" himself until he went into a coma; Naomi's loneliness at his funeral gave him enough to call out to her, but he probably had to stay away from her, and go back to feeding The Lonely.
Girl, you probably should go to a qualified care professional, you lost the love of you life, all your friends, and then got hit by a car, and you decide to vent to research institute.
Obviously Lonely

I think itās time to invite Mags into the circle of people who haunt the narrative of The Hunger Games universe in the most delicious manner.
She adds so much nuance because now that itās confirmed that she was ārebellingā since at least Haymitchās games, though itās definitely much sooner than that, we have a connection to Finnick/Annie and what position she may have had in their lives.
