Long ass ramble under the cut 😂

Okayokayokay SO-

I love soulmate au's. I cannot tell you how many fics I've read or how many prompts I've played with or media I've consumed or how many bullshit ideas I've come up with in my own head for them, I CANNOT.

It's just - hhhhhhhhhhhh- Soulmate au's and Time Travel au's are just the shit that gets me out of bed some days 😩💖my world weary soul drinks that shit like medicine, okay?

That all being said, it's probably a little ambiguous which au I picked to some, so let me explain: There are two au's I'm mashing up here really, both are from fics I've read back in the day. One being a Clack fic and the other a Thilbo one 🤷‍♂️kind of calling myself out here but w/e, they were good fics.

The Thilbo one is easier to explain - the concept is "Heartsong" which is, literally what it says on the tin. You find out who your soulmate is the first time you hear them sing (and no, that does not mean everyone is just a naturally good singer - they can be ass at music but, the point is, when you hear them their song is the perfect song for you and your heart knows that). There's a lot of little nuances to this one - things like you hearing your heartsong when you dream so you always know the moment you find them. Also people who have quiet dreams because their heartsong died, sometimes before ever even meeting them. etc etc. The heartsong also seems to expand, in some respect, to instruments (as Thorin plays his harp one night and Bilbo starts to hum without thinking about it because it sounds wonderful to him and that's how Thorin finds out).

Overall, it's a very soft and sweet concept to me and as someone who has a deep love of music, it's also one of my very favourites.

The Clack one is a little less easy to explain? I think. Maybe because it's nuances are so round about but I'll do my best. The concept for this one is "I Only See Colour When I'm With You" - anyone who knows how Clack fics usually go knows where this is probably headed 😂 and I am sorry to have hurt you but, overall, the idea is: You live in a noir-esqu world where everything is black and white. This only changes when you find your soulmate, of course, who brings the world into full saturation and lets you see colour for - possibly - the first time in your life (I say possibly because I genuinely can't remember if you start out colourblind or if it's an age cap thing).

Unfortunately, for as much as I adore this concept, it's been a long damn time since I read the fic and I don't even know if it still exists somewhere. So I can't actually recall if it was a 'you have to touch them' or 'you have to hear them' thing but the fic takes place with Zack on the cliff right before Midgar where he holds Cloud and looks at the sky - so I'm willing to bet it's a touch thing.

I also really loved this fic because it was the first one I'd read that brought in the concept of multiple soulmates to me - As Cloud later sits with Aerith and sees the colour he couldn't see with Zack, meanwhile Aerith only sees black and white, because she was only able to see colour with Zack (who was never able to see colour with her, because he needed Cloud for that).

Essentially, they all needed each other to see the world in colour. As a polyam person who didn't quite realise I was poly back then, it was a very comforting (and now dearly cherished) fic.

Anyways! Now that you have the background on the two concepts, you can kind of get what I'm going for with this piece.

Tamarack, Micha and Qiu are all soulmates in a fuzzy, desaturated world (I'm sorry, I'm not cruel enough to but them in complete greyscale LOL) and the way you find your soulmate is by hearing them sing and, when they do, your world is suddenly vivid and bright and beautiful. Suddenly, you can see things as they were meant to be seen and it's a permanent change (unlike the Clack fic) but things are always clearest and brightest when your soulmate speaks or sings 💖

I get a real kick out of the idea that Micha's known for fucking months that Tamarack is his soulmate (if not years) because he's always listening to her play but never says jack shit about it because he's emotionally constipated that way 😂Though genuinely, it's probably because he just doesn't think he's her soulmate and he's a bit against finding out he's right honestly.

Joke is on him, he's Qiu's and Tamaracks soulmate! And he couldn't have picked a better moment to grow a pair an take the risk 🥰

when I started shipping it if I did: So really funny story, they were actually not going to end up together in Baby Steps. I literally threw them together because I thought it would be Neat TM but they were originally going to end up with different insignificant OCs when they reached adulthood. But then Katie said she shipped them and a switch got flipped in my brain and now I literally cannot stop thinking about them 24/7. It's a problem lmao (but I love it).

my thoughts: With how little we know about Becky, she's one of those blank slate characters that you can project literally anything on to and I have done so to my heart's content. And I love Darryl in the show, I think he has some of the funniest lines and I like Aziz's VA work. They have so much potential from a story POV and it's been SO fun to play around with them. It's also one of those ships that I've gotten to build from the ground up and, in case you didn't figure this out about me already, I LOVE doing that. Developing relationships are my bread and butter, they're so fun to write and it's one of my favorite things.

What makes me happy about them: Honestly? Getting to explore their different backgrounds. Darryl is Indian (I think??) and Aziz is a non practicing Muslim (I think???), so I took that for him and ran with it. As for Becky, making her someone who grew up Catholic but doesn't necessarily believe in their teachings anymore (I write about Catholicism a lot for someone who grew up fundamentalist Baptist lmao) has been interesting to me. Their religious and cultural differences have always been intriguing to me, especially as someone who likes doing research into different religions and cultures (I blame my Hetalia days (yes I was in the fandom, no I'm not proud lmao)).

What makes me sad about them: They've literally never met in canon. I don't even know if they know each other exists. They are literally just in my head. Also I am the only one writing for them which means I have to make all the content. *sobs*

things done in fanfic that annoys me: Once again, I'm literally the only one writing for them lmao so nothing. Yet.

things I look for in fanfic: For anyone looking to join me in Barryl hell (PLEASE I'M STARVING), they need to be the biggest nerds ever who do not know how to romance. They are pining idiots who have no idea what they're doing but boy do they want to.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:  N/A, I want them together damn it! XDD

My happily ever after for them: They get engaged after Becky graduates with her Bachelor's and get married after Darryl graduates with his. They have three kids and never stop being giant nerds together. <3

who is the big spoon/little spoon: Drawthething said Darryl and you know what she's right. Though I imagine on really bad days Becky gets to be, but it's mostly him.

what is their favorite non-sexual activity: Watching movies together and geeking out about the story and fantasy/sci-fi elements together, and also ranting when something doesn't make sense. Also singing together!

Okay okay okay okay. The ones with Luigi. THE ONES WITH LUIGI. The one he's singing to her while they nuzzle their noses together reminds me SO MUCH of the scene of Remember me from Coco!!!!! And it only makes it even MORE special if that's even possible because I LOVE that movie and I LOVE that scene (I always cry ugly and HARD), so Luigi singing to little Violet like this while looking at her so lovingly, and Violet listening to her papa with that big smile on her face, I swear I'm DYING bestie. I'M DYING. THIS IS SO DAMN PRECIOUS

I swear my heart has increased in size at the ones of Baby Violet kissing her daddy's nose and then Luigi hugging her and crying like he does with his baby self in Partners in Time 🥹🥹🥹 The absolute SWEETNESS. Father and daughter are just so TENDER together and I love them with my entire freaking HEART SDKGOISJGSF 😭💚💜

And last but not least... the three of them sleeping together have completely melted my heart (if it wasn't totally melted yet, that is). I love how Daisy is sleeping so soundly and lazily while still holding the book they were reading to their girl though 🤭 And the way Luigi and Violet are cuddling together, with his fingers on his daughter's hair, is so absolutely adorable and cozy and heartwarming 🥹🥹🥹 Just seeing the three of them like this has given me YEARS of life I swear.

💖What do you like best about your own writing?

This is a bit silly but -- that it makes me laugh.

I usually include jokes and situations in my work because they? genuinely amuse me! And reading back, when I can stomach it, I get a lot of joy out of feeling like a joke landed, or that I got timing right or described something in a really amusing way.

I also really like that I think I care about character a lot. I love to show who a person is in little things; what they like to eat and drink, how they spend their free time, what they choose to wear and how they wear it. I love describing the spaces people inhabit-- bedrooms, offices-- what do they surround themselves with. I believe that soul is encapsulated in a bunch of small aspects.

Lastly I would say I'm proud of the research I do, specifically regarding past eras. Historical accuracy mean a lot to me, but I also cherish nostalgia as a central part of my work. If a character is watching TV or eating cereal, I'm going to make sure that show or brand is true to the world I've put my story in.

🍰What are some comfort fics of yours?

I got a few classics. A lot of what makes a 'comfort' fic of mine comes down to things I actually enjoy reading and often admire, and use as goalposts for my own work. When you can enjoy a fic like literature, and it lets you see characters in a new light, you keep coming back.

This is sort of an honorable mention but I read a lot of NorriBeth fics back in the day on fanfiction.net. It's a favorite ship I always treasured, and I still stand by it, even if learning that Keira Knightly's age was much younger than her character's was a bit of a 'woof' moment (17 vs 19, I know it's not a lot but geez, UK age of consent, cmon now...). So many of my favorite fics are literally lost either to time or to the deteriorating watery grave of the FFN platform, but they forever have my heart.

Of the ones that survived Davy Jones' Locker, I adored Bound in her bones by snowbryneich.

A 27 chapter masterpiece of romantic tension, featuring a realistic take on arranged marriage of convenience to lovers with an empowered and relatable Elizabeth, a Darcyesque Norrington, an perfect historical accuracy to the nines. I was fucking riveted, and the same author did a couple other great ones, such as 'Fresh As A BrideGroom'. Other than that, I would be remiss to answer this without touching on one of my all time favorite fics, In A Strange Land by @mrs-evadne-cake, a phenominal writer who I'm sure is tired of both the Stranger Things fandom at large and also me, this specific fanfic author greenhorn, continually singing her praises. It almost embarasses me to gush MORE about it, especially since the author is an honest to god professional. I've written on it before, it's well paced, well crafted, terrifying, and exceptional use of every character. The kids are well written and adorable, the teens are nuanced and REAL in a way the show never grasped. There's enough Steve to sate my voracious need to watch his character development, and I even got a bit of Murray who is probably my weirdest blorbo of all time. If a fic is a weapon, this fic is a mythic one-of-a-kind sword, OP is a legendary dwarven blacksmith, and i am an awestruck lil hobbit apprentice hastily scribbling notes. If I had to rate my favorite Stranger Things seasons it would go like this: 1. Season 3

Third space I would say is a tie between : Praise You by HeartlessMemo, which is a master class on erotica and plus size bodies, but speaks to me personally as a bulimic and will likely touch anyone with body issues. It's hot, it's passionate, it's kinky as hell. Nandermo from WWDITS at its absolute best.

And the other one is A Bastard's Carol by scumbaganarchy @scumbaganarchy, who I have been honored to get to know as of late! What the hell do you want me to say. It's 'A Christmas Carol' with the entire Rik Mayall cinematic universe. Not only is funny, but it's also touching, genuinely heartwarming, treats all these bizarre characters like real, breathing people. I cozy up to it every holiday when I can with a hot drink, it's a true classic and just goes to show that passion and creative understanding of any fandom no matter how niche can produce something really meaningful. This fic is the pride of the 1980s Bitish Anarchocomedy Fandom of the modern era, and any Young Ones (or Bottom) fan should give it a look.

Ravonna: she surely hopes it’s for her songs, and not for her drunken shenanigans, but either way, she will 100% own it with pride! “Yeah I got arrested for singing age of aggresion in a stormcloak-controlled province. What about it? It’s literally the same song with different lyrics! One would surely confuse them, especially after a few drinks!” (-> this is canon btw). She is and always will be unapologetically herself, no matter what.

Max: this kind of happened to him after he became the ‘Herald of Andraste’. He just woke up with a glowing, magical hand that is the only thing that can close fade rifts, and people started kneeling before him and calling him ‘the one who was sent by the Maker’ to save the world. He can’t believe it. He doesn’t even handle it, he straight up refuses to believe he is ‘the chosen one’ at first. He truly believes that he isn’t chosen and it was all a mistake because he’s not capable of saving the world. Also he doesn’t think he deserves the fame and praise that he gets (he is the king of insecurity)

💌 Getting a love letter from a secret admirer

Ravonna: if it’s something ridiculously cheesy, she would laugh, but also be quite fond of it. She’d keep it in her journal, while still feeling sorry for the poor bastard who wrote it, because he/she/they truly have no chance at winning her heart.

Max: he thinks it’s a mistake and there is definitely another 'Maxwell Trevelyan' that the letter is written for. There’s no way anybody would think of him that way, right?

Ravonna: she makes sure to show her gratitude for the presents! She loves it to open gifts in front of the people who gave them to her! Now, when people sing to her, she looooves to join in and harmonize so that it sounds even better. Just a bard being a bard 🤣

Max: he is extremely awkward and overwhelmed every time he gets a present, or even a small act of kindness at first, because he is not used to this. He may cry. Actually, he will definitely cry. Someone actually gave him something without expecting anything in return? Because they like him? Overwhelming and too much for my dear Max! HE doesn’t even know what to say or how to react! The same goes for when people sing happy birthday! He isn’t used to this. Back home, his family never celebrated his birthday. In fact, everyone was constantly upset on that day, because they keep saying that Max turned out to be a mistake and he doesn’t deserve birthdays. (this is getting too sad goodbye 😭)

I feel like I should compensate that last answer with a smiling Max, because he is very loved and appreciated by the right people!

As they swam nearer to the exit of the cave, Moomin found himself holding his breath (er, water? Whatever he was using to live right now). His heart beat faster with each second as he tried to imagine what to expect; a swarm of mermaids who would attack them in an instant? A large choir ready to sing and spell them with whatever they wanted? Maybe they’d even see the Lady of the Seas, with Snufkin trapped in some awful cage behind her – oh, that would be the worst outcome.

He definitely wasn’t expecting the sight of a large, underwater city before him, made out of anything that would conceivably sink down to the bottom of the ocean. But what was more surprising than that was the sight of the mermaids themselves: all different colors, all glowing brightly amidst the deep water, and all very bare in the chest – unless their scales went all the way up their torsos.

Moomin felt heat enter his cheeks immediately as he tried to keep his gaze polite, either looking up or consistently flickering his gaze about. Because all he really wanted to do was stare and admire all of this beauty before him, but that was rude and, besides, he was taken now! He was sure Snufkin would at least be a little annoyed at him for looking. Especially since he’d be looking at more mermaids, something that everyone already teased him enough about.

When he realized he could avoid looking for too long by simply keeping his gaze on his friends, he let out a sigh of relief.

“This is different than what I expected,” Moomin admitted to Alicia, who was looking around the city with wide eyes and an open smile.

“I’ll say!” Alicia clasped her hands together, spinning around a few times. “It’s so pretty! And so resourceful! Oh, I wish I could take a picture, or even paint these wonderful structures.”

“This place just looks like a bunch of junk to me,” Little My argued, kicking at a nearby rock. “The coral’s pretty, though.”

Alicia giggled and grabbed Little My’s hand before taking her closer to the coral, passing a few mermaids along the way who didn’t seem bothered by the two newcomers at all. Which was quite the relief to Moomin; looks like they didn’t have to worry about being attacked or spelled or anything.

There were so many mermaids in this cave, all swimming around with pleasant demeanors. If they did glance over at him and his friends they would glance away just as quickly, no threatening behavior whatsoever. Which could only mean that Snufkin wasn’t in any danger, if they were all this friendly? Maybe it was like Snorkmaiden had said, perhaps he hadn’t even found the Lady of the Seas yet. This place was pretty big, after all, and Snufkin was naturally curious and liked to explore anyway; maybe he’d gotten distracted by the new environment and lost track of time. And if that was the case, then they would simply find Snufkin before they all found the Lady of the Seas together!

Moomin felt much better, the tightness in his chest dissipating considerably. He took a calming breath before turning to Snorkmaiden, who he was surprised to see was looking off into the city with bright pink fur. “Are you okay, Snorkmaiden?”

She didn’t respond, her eyes still tracking something in the distance.

Moomin raised a brow before trying to follow her gaze, but he had to quickly look away when all he saw was a busty, orange-tailed mermaid swimming along her way. “Sn-Snorkmaiden, do you see something?”

“Hm?” She jolted, her fur shifting to red before quickly settling into white as she turned to Moomin with a tight smile. “Oh, y-yes! Just, um, unexpected! Like you said.”

Moomin stared at her a bit longer, creasing his brows together. “I asked if you saw something?”

“Oh.” Her fur shifted into pink again before she closed her eyes and forced it back to white with that same tense smile. “No, nothing in particular! Just looking out at all the mermaids, that’s all!”

Moomin tilted his head at her, glancing back over at the orange mermaid and back to her a few times before realization dawned on him. She’d been looking at a mermaid, her fur had been pink, she hadn’t even heard him when he spoke to her –

“Wait a minute!”

“No.” Snorkmaiden shook her head, her ears flattening back as she looked away. “Whatever you’re thinking, no.”

Moomin grinned wide, swimming close enough so he could whisper, “Oh, so you weren’t distracted by the pretty mermaids?”

“Of course not.” Snorkmaiden huffed, crossing her arms as she held her snout up high. “That’s what you do. I have much better control of my eyes and my mind.”

“I see.” Moomin snickered, glancing out at the city again before humming innocently, “Oh, one of them has such long, shining black hair, with the most dazzling emerald tail.”

“Really?” Snorkmaiden immediately turned to look. And just as quickly realized her mistake when Moomin burst into laughter, her fur turning an embarrassed pink. “Not funny, Moomin!!”

Moomin took a few deep breaths, clutching at his stomach as he simply smiled at her. “I didn’t know you fancied girls, too?”

“I don’t!” Snorkmaiden snapped, crossing her arms. She waited all of two seconds before relenting weakly, “I only recently started…”

Moomin smiled wider before going over to grab her hands, leading her into a spin as he laughed. “Snorkmaiden! Why didn’t you tell me sooner??”

“B-because I’m still figuring it out!” Snorkmaiden was trying not to smile back, glancing away from Moomin’s joyful gaze. “I wanted some time to sit with it, I guess. But I didn’t expect… I m-mean, I’d never really cared for mermaids much before, so this attraction is a surprise.”

“You’re telling me.” Moomin snorted, stopping their spin so he could link their arms instead, chuckling. “Looks like you and I are going to be very distracted during this mission.”

“Great.” She rolled her eyes, smiling a bit more now as she teased, “Now I feel even worse, being lumped in with your ridiculousness.”

“I think it’s better to have a partner for things like this.” Moomin chuckled, looking over at Alicia and Little My, who were now chatting with a few mermaids without any difficulty. “Because it looks like the others don’t share our problem.”

Snorkmaiden groaned and covered her eyes, her fur turning a deeper pink. “I can’t believe this. I’m supposed to be more mature than, than this! I mean it’s not like I haven’t seen such figures before, either, in magazines and books and – stop laughing at me.”

“Never.” Moomin squeezed her arm, grinning wide. “Now you know my pain. Which means you can’t tease me about it anymore!”

“You stare at everyone you find pretty!! I’m just staring because this is new for me!”

“Make up all the excuses you want.” Moomin snickered, dragging her over to the others. “We’re the same, you and I.”

“Please don’t say that.”

“We can’t help it if we’re attracted to pretty people.”

“Oh, my stars, I will punch you.”

“Our staring is harmless, we promise! Just admiration and awe, truly, nothing vulgar –”

Snorkmaiden roughly pushed Moomin’s side with her own, sending them both into a spin. “You little twig muncher, shut your mouth already!!”
