Day 12 : Drinks

The bar is crowded as hell when I step inside. The population in here is also very fruity. Of course he'd choose a place like this, but I certainly don’t mind. I see him immediately, make a beeline for him and tap on his shoulder. He turns around. He looks older but his smile is the same. Even bigger, more genuine.

“Damn kid, it's been a while, hasn’t it! Hey, have you gotten even bigger or something ?”

His voice stayed the same, too. I laugh and sit next to him.

“Nah, it's the heels. Twelve centimeters!”

“And people say I'm the mad one…”

“I'm not people.”

“Thank god for that! What do you want? Drinks are on me.”

My eyes get stuck on his glass. It's not absinth. It’s whisky. I don’t know why but that comforts me a little.

“Same as you. Haven’t drunk in a long time tho so I'm not sure if I’ll hold up well.”

“You?? Not drinking?? What, next thing you’re going to tell me you stopped vaping too??”

“I mean… yeah.”

He looks so shocked. It’s hilarious.

“I have three kids, Judge, I didn’t want them to live in smoke!”

“Youngsters these days are so weak… So fragile…”

“Always. Hey, barman, a whisky on the rocks for the kid!”

I pout as the barman puts my drink down in front of me. I’m not angry, though. Feels good to be treated like a child sometimes.

“How’s Empress doing?”

“Unhinged as fuck.”

I take a sip of my drink, staring at Judge. He really looks happier. I'm glad. I've been worried, but I don't want him to know. Not when he’s finally smiling for real.

Shit that drink is strong.

“You good, Lan Yue? You just got super red.”

“Y-Yup. Huhuh. Is… Senri joining us?”

“Yeah, he just told me he’d be late. Oh I can't wait to hear from all of the school’s gossip.”

I smile a little as I finish mine. I feel dizzy already, I'm really not as endurant as I used to be.

About genetics...

... and what it means for Jun and, potentially, children in the game.

So my hubby (biologist) and I (geoscientist) had this really interesting discussion (over breakfast) about genetics. I had questions as I thought about Jun, their origins, what that means, and? Kiiiiiiids.

I looked up the definition (including Merriam-Webster) and here's what I found: A hybrid is the offspring of two animals or plants of different subspecies, breeds, varieties, species, or genera. Hybrid is a kinda half-half.

Why am I looking at this? Celestials are distant human descendants (40,000 years or a little less), and Jun is supposed to be a "hybrid" or a human with "Celestial" genetics. But these two terms do not mean the same thing. Not at all.

Being a hybrid does not mean that Jun can have children; being a human with imported genetic material could mean that Jun could have children and pass on some of that material.

I looked at various articles and found one about cats that is very interesting. It explains how we can have hybrids between servals and domestic cats and all the other types of feline hybrids (https://www.vin.com/doc/?id=6976361). To summarise (VERY MUCH), it seems that cats and these felines have about 99% of their genetic material in common. This could explain why their hybrids can have offspring of their own.

On the other hand, if you look at hybrids between lions and tigers, none of them can reproduce. Tigers have 38 chromosomes and lions have 36. Their differences are much more important than whether or not they share a few genes.

Of course, knowing that two species share a certain percentage of genetic material between them does not mean that you can predict the reproductive ability of your hybrid.

Back to Jun. Dad is human (Orion), Mum (Ava) is... We're not so sure. Some say full Celestials, others not so much; maybe she's a changeling, there's talk of Celestial heritage... We don't know. The wording on the Exodus website is a bit ambiguous.

What we do know is that Celestials are human descendants and heavily genetically engineered. However, even with 10 million years between the different types of felines, they still share 99% of their genetic material.

My first question is: how far have the Celestials diverged from humanity? How far has the genetic modification gone? How much genetic material do humans and Celestials have in common?

My second question: Is Jun a true hybrid? Or just a human with Celestial genetic material inserted? In the latter scenario, Jun is not a hybrid, but a GMO.

With a hybrid (implying that Ava is 100% pure Celestial), the possibility of Jun having children might be slim. If Jun is a GMO, then there is a greater chance of Jun having children AND passing on those genetic modifications.

We need to know: WHO IS AVA? I want to know more about her.
