#Mac word processor legacy software
If only one processor exists, then the tasks are preempted in turn to give each access to the processor. If the user’s computer contains multiple processors, several tasks can be executed simultaneously, reducing the overall execution time. For example, if you have a large image that you need to manipulate with a filter, you can break up the image into sections, and then assign a task to process each section. In such cases, tasks can run simultaneously. Typically, if multiple processors are available in a multitasking environment, then tasks can be divided among the processors. Multiprocessing is the ability of a computer to use more than one processor simultaneously. Multitasking is the ability to handle several different tasks at once. Multitasking and multiprocessing are related concepts, but it is important to understand the distinctions between them. You should not confuse these threads with the preemptively scheduled tasks created by Multiprocessing Services. For example, the Thread Manager allows you to create cooperatively scheduled threads within a task. In older documentation, Apple has sometimes referred to separate units of execution as threads. Note: The definition of task in this document is analogous to the use of the term thread in some other operating systems such as UNIX¬®. For example, you can create tasks within an application to process information in the background (such as manipulating an image or retrieving data over the network) while still allowing the user to interact with the application using the user interface. Multiprocessing Services allows you to create preemptive tasks within an application (or process). An application does so by calling WaitNextEvent, which cedes control of the processor until an event occurs that requires the application’s attention. However, each application must voluntarily yield its processor time in order for another application to gain it. The Process Manager can keep track of the actions of several applications.

The Mac OS 8 operating system implements cooperative multitasking between applications. The teacher could vary the amount of time each child got to look at the book depending on various circumstances (for example, some children may read more slowly and therefore need more time). They would assign the book to each child in turn, making sure that each one got a chance to look at it. Preemptive multitasking would be the case where a teacher (or other supervisor) was in charge of letting the children look at the book. Preemptive multitasking allows an external authority to delegate execution time to the available tasks. In such cases, the other children are deprived. However, if a child is greedy, they may spend an inordinate amount of time looking at the book or refuse to give it up altogether. Each child can theoretically get a chance to look at the book. An example of cooperative multitasking is an unsupervised group of children wanting to look at a book. Cooperative multitasking requires that each task voluntarily give up control so that other tasks can execute. Multitasking may be either cooperative or preemptive. Each such task has its own stack and register set. For example, the system may execute multiple applications, and each application may have independently executing tasks within it.

On a computer, the system software can handle multiple tasks, which may be applications or even smaller units of execution. In programming, a task is simply an independent execution path. Not everything may be happening simultaneously, but you are jumping back and forth, devoting your attention to each task as necessary. For example, you may be working on a project, eating lunch, and talking to a colleague at the same time. Multitasking is essentially the ability to do many things concurrently. For information about actually using the Multiprocessing Services API in your application, see Using Multiprocessing Services. Note that this chapter covers mostly concepts rather than implementation or programming details. You should read this chapter if you are not familiar with multitasking or multiprocessing concepts. This chapter describes the basic concepts underlying multitasking and how Multiprocessing Services uses them on Macintosh computers. To learn about multiprocessing on OS X, see Concurrency Programming Guide to learn about POSIX thread routines, see pthread. In apps that run in OS X v10.8 and later, you should use Grand Central Dispatch or POSIX threads to support multitasking. In earlier versions of OS X, Multiprocessing Services allowed legacy apps to support multitasking. The Multiprocessing Services API is deprecated in OS X v10.8.

hi!! I've been reading your works on ao3 (which I like a lot :) and at the end of one chapter you mentioned some word processors that you really like. I meant to save that list to check it out but I lost it. Could you list em off real quick? thanks :D
Hi!
Sorry, missed this. And thank you ❤️
I do most of my writing in Typora because it's clean, simple and free, and uses markdown which I find easy and simple. It also has a handy "copy as HTML" option, which makes posting to AO3 easy.
I use Draft (free/premium) for collaboration--it really is the best for that. Markdown with export to HTML (I copy-paste out of the preview box), but for some reason it borks footnotes, so I sometimes copy-paste back into Typora first.
For long form I have a legacy copy of Ulysses (Markdown, WYSIWYM, several output modes, all documents in a single tree.) I love it it, but it is subscription model now and Mac/iPad only (and two out of three Mac machines in the house are laptops with R keys that barely work.)
I use PureWriter on my phone as it is small and clean and easy to export from.
Other suggestions: Dillinger is free and cloud-based. You write in markdown on half a split screen, and it shows you what it looks like in formatted html (including images) on the right.
Scrivener is a complex writing, planning and research app. I still love it, but it is very feature heavy. Wouldn't use anything else for academic work, though. Premium.
The demo version of Write or Die is good for forcing yourself to write through block.

The Macintosh Plus computer is the third model in the Macintosh line, introduced on January 16, 1986, two years after the original Macintosh and a little more than a year after the Macintosh 512K, with a price tag of US$2599. As an evolutionary improvement over the 512K, it shipped with 1 MB of RAM standard, expandable to 4 MB, and an external SCSI peripheral bus, among smaller improvements. It originally had the same generally beige-colored case as the original Macintosh ("Pantone 453"), however in 1987, the case color was changed to the long-lived, warm gray "Platinum" color. It is the earliest Macintosh model able to run System 7 OS.
Bruce Webster of BYTE reported a rumor in December 1985: "Supposedly, Apple will be releasing a Big Mac by the time this column sees print: said Mac will reportedly come with 1 megabyte of RAM ... the new 128K-byte ROM ... and a double-sided (800K bytes) disk drive, all in the standard Mac box". Introduced as the Macintosh Plus, it was the first Macintosh model to include a SCSI port, which launched the popularity of external SCSI devices for Macs, including hard disks, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, printers, Zip Drives, and even monitors. The SCSI implementation of the Plus was engineered shortly before the initial SCSI spec was finalized and, as such, is not 100% SCSI-compliant. SCSI ports remained standard equipment for all Macs until the introduction of the iMac in 1998, which replaced most of Apple's "legacy ports" with USB.
The Macintosh Plus was the last classic Mac to have a phone cord-like port on the front of the unit for the keyboard, as well as the DE-9 connector for the mouse; models released after the Macintosh Plus would use ADB ports.
The Mac Plus was the first Apple computer to utilize user-upgradable SIMM memory modules instead of single DIP DRAM chips. Four SIMM slots were provided and the computer shipped with four 256K SIMMs, for 1MB total RAM. By replacing them with 1MB SIMMs, it was possible to have 4MB of RAM. (Although 30-pin SIMMs could support up to 16MB total RAM, the Mac Plus motherboard had only 22 address lines connected, for a 4MB maximum.)
It has what was then a new 3 1⁄2-inch double-sided 800 KB floppy drive, offering double the capacity of floppy disks from previous Macs, along with backward compatibility. The then-new drive is controlled by the same IWM chip as in previous models, implementing variable speed GCR. The drive was still completely incompatible with PC drives. The 800 KB drive has two read/write heads, enabling it to simultaneously use both sides of the floppy disk and thereby double storage capacity. Like the 400 KB drive before it, a companion Macintosh 800K External Drive was an available option. However, with the increased disk storage capacity combined with 2-4x the available RAM, the external drive was less of a necessity than it had been with the 128K and 512K.
The Mac Plus has 128 KB of ROM on the motherboard, which is double the amount of ROM in previous Macs; the ROMs included software to support SCSI, the then-new 800 KB floppy drive, and the Hierarchical File System (HFS), which uses a true directory structure on disks (as opposed to the earlier MFS, Macintosh File System in which all files were stored in a single directory, with one level of pseudo-folders overlaid on them). For programmers, the fourth Inside Macintosh volume details how to use HFS and the rest of the Mac Plus's new system software. The Plus still did not include provision for an internal hard drive and it would be over nine months before Apple would offer a SCSI drive replacement for the slow Hard Disk 20. It would be well over a year before Apple would offer the first internal hard disk drive in any Macintosh.
A compact Mac, the Plus has a 9-inch (23 cm) 512 × 342 pixel monochrome display with a resolution of 72 PPI, identical to that of previous Macintosh models. Unlike earlier Macs, the Mac Plus's keyboard includes a numeric keypad and directional arrow keys and, as with previous Macs, it has a one-button mouse and no fan, making it extremely quiet in operation. The lack of a cooling fan in the Mac Plus led to frequent problems with overheating and hardware malfunctions.
The applications MacPaint and MacWrite were bundled with the Mac Plus. After August 1987, HyperCard and MultiFinder were also bundled. Third-party software applications available included MacDraw, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as Aldus PageMaker. Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint (originally by Forethought) were actually developed and released first for the Macintosh, and similarly Microsoft Word 1 for Macintosh was the first time a GUI version of that software was introduced on any personal computer platform. For a time, the exclusive availability of Excel and PageMaker on the Macintosh were noticeable drivers of sales for the platform.
The case design is essentially identical to the original Macintosh. It debuted in beige and was labeled Macintosh Plus on the front, but Macintosh Plus 1 MB on the back, to denote the 1 MB RAM configuration with which it shipped. In January 1987 it transitioned to Apple's long-lived platinum-gray color with the rest of the Apple product line, and the keyboard's keycaps changed from brown to gray. In January 1988, with reduced RAM prices, Apple began shipping 2- and 4- MB configurations and rebranded it simply as "Macintosh Plus." Among other design changes, it included the same trademarked inlaid Apple logo and recessed port icons as the Apple IIc and IIGS before it, but it essentially retained the original design.
An upgrade kit was offered for the earlier Macintosh 128K and Macintosh 512K/enhanced, which includes a new motherboard, floppy disk drive and rear case. The owner retained the front case, monitor and analog board. Because of this, there is no "Macintosh Plus" on the front of upgraded units, and the Apple logo is recessed and in the bottom left hand corner of the front case. However, the label on the back of the case reads "Macintosh Plus 1MB". The new extended Plus keyboard could also be purchased. Unfortunately, this upgrade cost almost as much as a new machine.
The Mac Plus itself can be upgraded further with the use of third-party accelerators. When these are clipped or soldered onto the 68000 processor, a 32 MHz 68030 processor can be used, and up to 16 MB RAM. This allows it to run Mac OS 7.6.1.
There is a program available called Mini vMac that can emulate a Mac Plus on a variety of platforms, including Unix, Windows, DOS, classic Mac OS, macOS, Pocket PC, iOS and even Nintendo DS.
Although the Macintosh Plus would become overshadowed by two new Macintoshes, the Macintosh SE and the Macintosh II in March 1987, it remained in production as a cheaper alternative until the introduction of the Macintosh Classic on October 15, 1990. This made the Macintosh Plus the longest-produced Macintosh ever, having been on sale unchanged for 1,734 days, until the 2nd generation Mac Pro, introduced on December 19, 2013, surpassed the record on September 18, 2018. (it would ultimately last for 2,182 days before being discontinued on December 10, 2019) It continued to be supported by versions of the classic Mac OS up to version 7.5.5, released in 1996. Additionally, during its period of general market relevance, it was heavily discounted like the 512K/512Ke before it and offered to the educational market badged as the "Macintosh Plus ED". Due to its popularity, long life and its introduction of many features that would become mainstays of the Macintosh platform for years, the Plus was a common "base model" for many software and hardware products.

In fact, devs may love TextWrangler so much, they just might end up springing for the full package of BBEdit, with its more-advanced features and authoring capabilities. (Note that TextWrangler 4 will only run on OS X 10.6 and later.) We get the more-robust search capabilities of recent versions of BBEdit, too, and you can even search inside compressed files.Īs always, TextWrangler comes packed with tons of developer-specific tools across multiple programming languages, and developers will love the ability to make easy (and now even more streamlined) use of scripts (Automator, AppleScripts, and Unix), differencing and merging, text folding, and regex-based replacing.

If you're looking for a word processor (i.e., something to create pretty or specially formatted documents), look elsewhere. If BBEdit is a time-honored king among text editors, then TextWrangler is a worthy prince - always a short step behind BBEdit in features, but also always (amazingly) free.

Indesign Chromebook

Adobe Indesign Chromebook
Indesign For Chromebook
Adobe Indesign Chromebook
Autodesk Chromebook Installation
米Adobeは、DTPアプリケーション「InDesign」と描画アプリケーション「Illustrator」に、Apple Siliconに対応するベータ版ソフトウェアの配布を開始した。.
InDesign is a typesetting and desktop publishing software tool developed by Adobe. It helps you to create flyers, posters, brochures, books, newspapers, magazines, and more. However, InDesign has some limitations like editing mathematic equations or formula is difficult.
One of the most commonly requested InDesign tutorials I’ve seen are from people asking how they can achieve a chrome effect in their text. Chrome effects can look quite dazzling when they are applied properly, and though it might seem like a hard look to achieve, it’s surprisingly simple. The following InDesign tutorial will take you through the steps involved in making a basic chrome effect, which you can then adapt to your needs later.
Creating the Gradient
In truth, I really miss Adobe Indesign but I can make due without it for now. From powered off, this Chromebook is online and working in less than 15 seconds. Pros: i3-5005U 2.00 GHz Broadwell processor (More that enough power for anything you'll need).
Manage your Adobe Account profile, password, security options, product and service subscriptions, privacy settings, and communication preferences. Moving to a new type of computer is difficult but with a Chromebook, the transition can be painless. Getting Started with Chromebooks is designed for ANYONE to quickly and easily get up and running using a Chromebook.More importantly, this course will show you how you can maximize your Chromebook experience to make it the ultimate productivity, creativity, and anything you need it to be tool.
Chrome is really just a simple gradient with a few effects added on afterwards to enhance the look. The gradient actually only requires a few colors, 3 stops to be exact, in order to look stylish and correct.
1. First things first: create a simple line of text. Format this text into a font that will look good and clearly display the effect. Something with thick lines will work best.
2. Now pull out your gradient palette. It is here that the magic will happen. You’ll be creating a gradient that goes from light sharply to dark, then back to light again. That’s not quite a good explanation, so I’l,l show you a bit more in-depth.
3. Make the first color a light blue. This is the most common color found reflected in chrome surfaces, and it looks the best in most cases. (Like I said, this InDesign tutorial and the techniques found within it should be adapted according to your needs). The other end of the gradient should be white.
Opera mini portable. Opera GX Portable, Portable Edition can run from a cloud folder, external drive, or local folder without installing into Windows. It's even better with the PortableApps.com Platform for easy installs and automatic updates. Also Available: Opera Portable, Opera Portable Legacy 36, Opera Portable Legacy 12.
4. Drag the white to a bit less than the middle of the gradient slider. Now pull out another color marker before that one, and make it dark gray.
5. As you can see in the above screenshot, the gray and white have a very sharp contrast in a very small area. This is essentially what makes the chrome effect work. To round it out, pull out another marker at the end of the gradient and make it white. Your completed gradient should look like mine in the below screenshot.
6. Now you can apply it to the text. Select the text with the text tool, and then drag with the gradient tool to apply it. I’ve also added a black background so the full effect can be seen.
Effects
The text can, of course, be left as is. It looks really great, and by playing around with the colors and amounts in the gradients palette, you can completely change the look. If you want to add just a bit more, then a slight emboss and drop shadow with a bit of satin can make it look just right.
The gradient technique you’ve learned in this tutorial can be a starting point for many other great gradient ideas and techniques. It also looks great applied to objects, so feel free to experiment.

The Surface Pro X is one of the most expensive connected PC's on the market in 2021, but should you buy one?
There's no denying, the Surface Pro X is Microsoft's best-looking Surface Pro device to date, and it has a hefty price tag to show for it. When it was released back in 2019, the issue users had been dealing with was its inability to run legacy applications natively on ARM. With the release of the updated 2020 Surface Pro X, many of those issues remain, but this computer is undoubtedly the future of computing, and Microsoft has made significant strides to prove that. Using the device for over a month, the Surface Pro X feels like Microsoft's lavish answer to Chromebooks rather than something like Apple's M1 Macs; it's really in a unique, quirky category of its own, and hopefully, by the end of this review, you'll have determined if this device is for you.

This device was provided to MUO for review by Microsoft Canada.
Design and Comfort
When it comes to design, the Surface Pro X is still hands-down the best-looking Surface device. Compared to the dated looks of the Surface Pro 7, the Surface Pro X is slim, light, and comes in a new Platinum finish, which gives it a much more flashy appeal.

The Surface Pro X packs a 13-inch, 1440p, 3:2 aspect ratio display, and it is stunning. Frankly, this is the best-looking display on any Surface device out right now, and that has everything to do with the thin bezels. Unlike the Surface Pro 7, Surface Laptop 4, or even the Surface Book 3, the Surface Pro X has slim side bezels and a moderately tamed top bezel, which houses the webcam and microphone array. Combined with the Surface kickstand, the Surface Pro X is perfect for jotting down notes, sketching doodles, or streaming shows.

Microsoft didn't provide any accessories like their Signature Keyboard or the Surface Pen to test out during the review period, but if the typing experience is anything like the other Surface devices, you're in good hands. You can find out more about Microsoft's keyboard quality in our Surface Laptop 4 review.
Overall, two years later, the design of the Surface Pro X still looks fresh. This device is modern, minimal, and perfectly made for the mobile lifestyle.
User Upgradability
Historically, the Surface lineup has always been under criticism for its poor user repairability and upgradeability, but to some extent, Microsoft has made it easier to gain access to certain parts of the device. The RAM is soldered on, but you can access the SSD of the Surface Pro X by using a SIM ejector tool and opening up the metal plate that sits behind the kickstand. Here, you can access the SSD, and the nano-SIM card slot allows the device to connect to a cellular network.

Specifications and Performance
When it comes to the specifications and performance of the Surface Pro X, this is where things get complicated and a little weird. The 2020 Surface Pro X uses the SQ2 chip that was co-engineered by Qualcomm and Microsoft. Compared to the previous SQ1 chip, there's a slight performance boost, but overall you shouldn't expect anything close to the speed of something like Apple's M1 offerings.
Our review unit came with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. You can spec up the SQ2 devices with up to 512GB, but there are no RAM upgrades here.
In my testing, the Surface Pro X delivered subpar performance, but generally speaking, it was inconsistent; the best way to describe using this computer would be to treat it like a Chromebook that runs Windows. The device runs fine when you throw web-based apps on it. I got through entire workdays just fine when I was on the browser (preferably Edge, since it's better optimized on ARM), using social media, watching Netflix, and getting on Zoom calls. When it comes to web-based tasks, you will encounter very few performance issues, but I will note that occasionally, I experienced random hangs while watching videos.
When it comes to running apps, I had very few problems with most of the apps I tested. Microsoft polished the software experience when it came to running Windows on ARM, and it shows here. Apps from the Microsoft Store are generally fine, but that's a limited selection, and getting support for these legacy applications will still take some time.
I tried light photo editing in Adobe Photoshop now that Windows on ARM is supported, but the performance isn't impressive. Apple's M1 Macs are still cheaper and superior in terms of performance compared to Microsoft's current offering.
It is apparent that the Surface Pro X is a web-first device. While it's pleasant to work on a computer that looks and feels like the Surface Pro X, Windows on ARM still has a long way to go before it can be a viable replacement to x86 chips.
Ports and Connectivity
Onto ports: this is where things get a bit odd. The Surface Pro X has two USB-C ports; the Surface Connect port, used for charging; and a nano-SIM for cellular connectivity. None of the USB-C ports support Thunderbolt 3 or 4, but you can power two 4K monitors using the Surface Connector if you buy Microsoft's Surface Hub accessory.
The most curious thing about the Surface Pro X is the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack. Sure the iPad Pros also don't have a headphone jack, but with a computer that runs full-fledged Windows and is marketed towards people with mobile offices, the exclusion of a headphone jack is bizarre when almost everyone needs to connect with online classes or meetings. Of course, you can connect headphones via Bluetooth or USB-C, but it would be great to see the headphone jack return to a future device.

When it comes to connectivity, this is where the Surface Pro X shines. I didn't get to extensively test out the cellular connectivity of the Surface Pro X, but the device supports LTE, and you can insert a SIM card to directly get access to the internet instead of tethering to your phone. Having an always-connected PC has the benefit of making out-of-office workflows much more smooth and elegant; this is perfect for getting onto meetings while you're on a commute or being able to publish work while you're somewhere remote.

Overall, the Surface Pro X has made significant strides in making Windows on ARM more refined. However, until Microsoft can match Apple's level of integration, both on the software and hardware side, the Surface Pro X remains a fancy and rather expensive Chromebook replacement that runs Windows.
Battery Life
When it comes to battery life, you won't be disappointed here. Microsoft claims to have 15 hours of screen-on-time with the Surface Pro X, but you're more realistically going to get about half of that at around 7-8 hours since most apps still aren't optimized for ARM and therefore require more processor-intensive emulation.
While 7-8 hours isn't anything special, the Surface Pro X can deliver that consistently in my testing. It also helps that Microsoft includes a fast 65W power supply in the box that enables fast charging.

Audio and Video Features
One of the most prominent advantages the Surface Pro X has over other PCs is its camera and microphone array. This device genuinely has one of the best webcams on a Windows computer, and when it comes to audio, the device can pick up on your voice and deliver clear vocals. Microsoft also has this software feature that allows you to correct your eye contact when you're in a video call, and it works surprisingly well. The device is equipped with a rear 10MP camera, which has autofocus and 4K video, but it's better if you use it for scanning documents.
The Surface Pro X's speaker system is also great. They support Dolby Atmos, and this makes the device ideal for consuming content or getting clear audio during video conferences.
Should You Buy the Surface Pro X?
The Surface Pro X is undoubtedly a unique piece of hardware, and won't be suitable for everyone's workflow.
While ARM on Windows has come a long way, there are still fundamental issues that need to be addressed before devices like the Surface Pro X can be recommended to more people.

Overall, I recommend the Surface Pro X to those that live in the browser, or in other words, have the majority of their workflow based within web apps. The Surface Pro X is great for that, but if you're looking for a more well-rounded device, you're better off looking elsewhere.
Considering the Surface Pro X is $1600 and doesn't include its main accessories, Apple's M1 Macs still offer the best value for ulta-portable all-round performance.

How does ARC work?
An audio system’s performance is always negatively affected by a room’s unique characteristics. The size and shape of the room, its construction, the furnishings, and other factors cause standing waves, resonances, and reflections that can color the sound played by loudspeakers. Utilizing proprietary algorithms developed by Anthem engineers, ARC Genesis creates custom correction curves that retain the favorable acoustic signature of speakers and remove negative room contributions. These custom filters are then used to program high-quality digital signal processing (DSP) technology embedded within compatible audio products.

ARC Genesis Key Features
Demo Mode: Experience the software first hand. Demo mode offers access to the full suite of tools without having an Anthem, MartinLogan, or Paradigm compatible product connected.

Assign Amp Channels: For products such as Anthem’s MRX audio/video receivers and AVM home theater processors, ARC Genesis allows you to configure the assignable amp channels from within the software, making quick work of setting up your receiver for zone 2 or height effects channels.
Set Up Bass Management: For products such as Anthem’s MRX audio/video receivers, AVM home theater processors, and STR preamplifier and integrated amplifiers, ARC Genesis not only optimizes the performance of your system, it also lets you set up bass management from within the software. To redirect bass to a subwoofer (below a speaker’s Crossover frequency), set the Send Bass to Subwoofer (or Low-Frequency Extension Slope) control to “Send bass to the sub.”
Customize Target Curves: With ARC Genesis’ Professional Mode, the target curves for the system as a whole, are adjustable using room gain, deep bass boost, and tilt controls. Individual sets of speakers allow for the adjustment of high-frequency roll-off and crossover frequencies and slopes. Subwoofers allow for the adjustment of high-frequency extension, low-frequency extension, and low-frequency extension slope.
20 Hz to 20,000 Hz Full-Range Room Correction for Each Set of Speakers: For products such as Anthem’s MRX audio/video receivers, AVM home theater processors, and STR preamplifier and integrated amplifiers, ARC Genesis allows you to set a different maximum correction frequency for each set of speakers, up to 20,000 Hz. For example, you may want to use room correction on your dipole electrostatic front speakers up to 400 Hz and your small in-ceiling height effect speakers up to ARC’s default of 5,000 Hz.
Multiple Measurements: Some devices allow you to create multiple measurement sets (up to four, depending on the device). We recommend more than one if some significant transformation predictably takes place within the room that can alter the room’s acoustic response. For example, take one set of measurements with a drop-down video screen deployed and another with the screen hidden, drapes up or down, doors open or closed, and so on.
Multiple Profiles: Alone in the dark mac download. Some devices allow you to create multiple system profiles (up to four, depending on the device). For example, one profile can optimize your system as a multi-channel home theater with sub and another as a 2-channel music system without a sub. Can't transfer photos from iPhone to … - Apple Community.
Remeasure: If you’ve spent time working with ARC to dial in the performance of your system and later decide to upgrade your center channel or another speaker, ARC Genesis allows you to open a saved configuration file, remeasure only your new speaker, and update your target curves without needing to start over from scratch.
Pan and Zoom: ARC Genesis allows you to examine graphs in great detail. To zoom on a computer, place your cursor over the graph and spin your mouse wheel or choose Zoom In or Zoom Out. To pan on a computer, left-click on a graph and drag it to change position. On a touch screen enabled device, you press the Zoom In or Zoom Out controls or press and drag to pan.
Multiple Languages: Support for several languages is available under ARC > Preferences > Languages. To switch to a different language, select your preferred language from the Preferences panel, close the application, and restart it. At the time of launch, ARC supports Chinese, English, French, German, and Spanish.
Free Download Arcgis 9.3 Software
Quick Measure and Snapshots: Quick Measure allows you to experiment with speaker and subwoofer positioning and settings outside of ARC while monitoring the resulting acoustic response in real time. The snapshot feature allows you to freeze a curve to compare against subsequent changes that affect the acoustic response.

Last week, Razer unveiled its first-ever external dock for PC gaming — the Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock Chroma. Launched alongside a new laptop stand, the latest peripheral has a variety of different ports to help users get the most out of their gaming experience, but is it worth checking out? Here's a look at all the connectivity options for Razer's latest device.
Founded in 1998, Razer is a Singaporean-American tech company that sells a variety of products, from consumer electronics to financial services to, most notably, gaming hardware. Razer offers a wide selection of different gaming peripherals, including mice, keyboards, graphics cards and even laptops. More recently, Razer unveiled Project Hazel, the company's smart face mask concept.
Related: Why Razer's Project Hazel Mask Doesn't Have A Release Date Or Price Yet
The new Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock Chroma offers a plethora of ways to connect devices. In total, it comes with ten different ports. There are four Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, three USB-A ports (i.e. the old-school USB cables used by more legacy devices), an RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet jack for wired internet, a 3.5mm combo audio jack for headsets, as well as an SD card reader that can read UHS-II (ultra-high-speed) memory cards. Razer's new dock comes with a 135-watt power supply, but it can also provide 90 watts of power to other devices via one of the USB-C ports. Therefore, users can charge their phones, other gaming peripherals or even a laptop as they use the dock. It's also designed with aesthetics in mind. The Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock Chroma is 7.48 inches by 2.93 inches by 1.06 inches and has a matte black anodized aluminum finish with a strip of Razer Chroma RGB lighting alongthe bottom. This lighting can be adjusted to any of the 16.8 million colors available in Razer Synapse 3, the company's hardware configuration software. (Though, that software doesn't work with macOS.)

Razer's Thunderbolt 4 Dock Chroma has a bandwidth of 40Gbps. As such, it has the capability to support either dual 4K monitors at 60Hz or a single 8K display at 30Hz. This makes it an ideal solution for graphic intensive endeavors, such as high-end gaming or even video editing. Since the dock's memory card slot can read UHS-II SD cards, users can quickly transfer photos and 4K video.
Of course. the Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock Chroma is clearly aimed at the premium consumer. In other words, the buyer's hardware can't be too out of date. PCs need to be running Windows 10 and have either a Thunderbolt 4 or older Thunderbolt 3 port. Apple customers need to own a Mac with an M1 Processor or a Thunderbolt 3 port, and it must be running at least macOS 11.1 Big Sur. The dock is available to pre-order now from Razer and RazerStore retail locations for $329.99.

If you have not yet installed Apple's Java Mac OS X 2012-006 update, then you are still using a version of Apple Java 6 that includes the plug-in and the Java Preferences app. See Note for Users of Macs that Include Apple Java 6 Plug-in.
Only one JRE can be installed. Installing a JRE removes the previously installed JRE. The JRE version used by the system can be determined in one of two ways:
From System Preferences click the Java icon from the Other category. This launches the Java Control Panel. Click About...
Type the following in a Terminal window:
The system will not install a JRE that has a lower version than the current version. If you want to install a lower version, first uninstall the existing version.
Uninstalling the JRE
To uninstall the JRE, you must have Administrator privileges and execute the remove commands either as root or by using the sudo(8) tool.
Remove one directory and one file (a symlink), as follows:
Navigate to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins and remove the JavaAppletPlugin.plugin directory.
Navigate to /Library/PreferencePanes and remove JavaControlPanel.prefpane.
Do not attempt to uninstall Java by removing the Java tools from /usr/bin. This directory is part of the system software and any changes will be reset by Apple the next time you perform an update of the OS.

Watch the companion video: How to use Java in the new Microsoft Edge
Some users may need internet artifacts like the Java browser plugin to run legacy apps that require it. The options to run Java apps are few and far between these days. Yet it is possible to use Microsoft’s new Edge web browser — the Chromium-based version of Edge — to run Java apps. Assuming you have Java installed on your computer, the only requirement is an intermediary in the form of an extension.
What makes Java support possible in the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge is Edge’s support of Chrome extensions. If you are still running the old version of Edge, it handles the need for running Java apps in a completely different way. Although Microsoft has its own extensions library, you won’t find what you are looking for there. Edge users with Java needs must visit the Chrome Web Store instead to install the one discussed here.
Java in the new Microsoft Edge using IE Tab
One method to use Java in the new Microsoft Edge is to install the IE Tab extension. The “IE” in IE Tab is an abbreviation for Internet Explorer. Available for Edge from the Chrome Web Store, IE Tab emulates Internet Explorer within an Edge browser window. The extension uses the Internet Explorer rendering engine to display Java content (as well as ActiveX and Silverlight content). It is easy to install, and even easier to use. It is important to note that IE Tab works on Windows machines only.
Visit the IE Tab page in the Chrome Web Store. Click the blue Add To Chrome button. A dialog will display asking you if you want to Add IE Tab, accompanied by a list of functions it can perform. Click the Add extension button.
Once installed, the IE Tab icon in Microsoft Edge displays next to Edge’s address bar. Click the icon to open an IE Tab. In the IE Tab, input the web address of a page that contains Java content. In the example below, our Java version verification was successful. The page uses a Java detection applet, with the latest version of Microsoft Edge using an IE Tab.
Download Latest Version Of Java Jvm For Mac Version
Try that same verification process in a regular Edge tab, and a notification that, “We are unable to verify if Java is currently installed and enabled in your browser,” displays instead.
Java Web Start, No Browser Required
If you have the Java plugin on your Windows machine, then you have Java Web Start (JWS). The question is does the Java application you want to run use JWS technology? JWS launches automatically if you download a Java app that uses it (usually in the form of a .jnlp file). Check the Java app developer’s website to see if they have a JWS download link for their app. If they do, download it and save a shortcut on your desktop when prompted by JWS. Double-click the shortcut to run the app.

Text Editor Or Notepad For Mac

Notepad For Mac
A good word processor is one of the few pieces of software you simply can't live without. You might be able to manage without a spreadsheet tool or something for making slideshows, but text documents are unavoidable. Thankfully, you don't need to splash out on a full Microsoft Office subscription; there are some superb word processors available to download and use completely free.
Here we’re looking at the very best word processors that can be used offline (particularly useful for distraction-free writing), but there are also several excellent browser-based tools to consider if you'd rather do your writing online.
Google Docs is the most obvious choice, and has the advantage of saving your work automatically so you don’t have to worry if your connection fails. It’s also a good choice for collaborative working, and means you don’t have to upload work to a separate cloud storage service. However, it has a limited selection of templates, there’s no way to import content from other Google applications, and any online tool is going to be surrounded by distractions like social media.
Best Text Editors for macOS. Note: In this article, we are focusing on the best text editors for coding but if you are looking for a text editor for your writing purposes, you can check out our article on the best writing apps for Mac. Sublime Text 3. Sublime Text is probably one of the most famous text editors available for Mac and for all the right reasons. TextEdit is the default text editor in macOS, and it’s just as barebones as the default text editor in Windows, Notepad. Naturally, many Mac users sooner or later look for an alternative, and they often stumble upon Notepad++.
If you'd prefer an offline word processor, read on – the perfect one is only a click away.
1. WPS Office Free
A word processor with cloud storage and support for all text files
Interface almost identical to Word
Free cloud storage
If you’ve used a modern version of Microsoft Word, there’ll be no learning curve when you switch to Writer – the word processing component of WPS Office Free.
This free word processor looks and behaves almost exactly like its premium counterpart, and even has its own equivalent of OneDrive, offering 1GB free cloud storage.
Its selection of pre-installed templates gives you everything you need for common document types, and you can easily create your own for bespoke tasks. It’s compatible with every text file format you can think of, including current and legacy versions of Microsoft Word dating back to Office 97.
WPS Office Writer is supported by discrete ads, which can be removed by upgrading to the premium version, but they’re barely noticeable and no features are locked behind a paywall. Overall, WPS Writer is very impressive, and in our opinion it’s the best free word processor available to download today.
WPS recently launched a free PDF to Word converter as well, which is a great companion to its word processor. Sublime text download.
2. LibreOffice or Apache OpenOffice
All-singing, all-dancing word processors for any text-based work
Document template galleries
LibreOffice is a fork of Apache OpenOffice, and although there are some differences between the two suites (LibreOffice receives more frequent updates, for example, and has a more lively userbase), their word processing components are so similar, we’re listing them together.
Both versions of Writer are feature-packed analogs of Microsoft Word, packed with all the features you could possibly need for any text-based work.
The two versions of Writer include wizards and templates for common document types, such as invoices and letters, and it’s easy to create your own templates for future use as well. The word processors also work together with the other office software in their respective suites – so you can use Base to create a bibliography, for example.
Both word processors support all the most popular file formats, and can export documents to PDF without the need for additional software. If you’re looking for a word processor that can stand in for Microsoft Word, either of these two will be a perfect candidate.
3. FocusWriter
How to rotate text in word for mac. The ideal word processor for first drafts, with no fussy formatting
Blocks out distractions
Auto-save function
If you simply want to hammer out some words without worrying about formatting, you could just use Windows’ built-in Notepad app, but FocusWriter is full of clever tools that will help you maximize productivity without ever getting in the way.
As the name implies, FocusWriter blocks out all distractions so you can give that all-important first draft your full attention. In normal use, all you see is a blank page – toolbars are only visible if you move your mouse pointer to the edge of the screen – but there’s a killer feature in Focused Text, which fades everything into the background except the current paragraph or sentence.
FocusWriter also features alerts that are triggered at certain times, or when you’ve reached a predefined word count, so you don’t need to worry about watching a counter (as you would in Microsoft Word). This also makes FocusWriter a good tool to use in tandem with the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working hard for a period of time that’s long enough for you to work productively, but not so long that you become fatigued.
However you can search the document or copy text from it (and on a Mac spotlight will index the document so you can find the document with a spotlight search). This is great if you want to scan paper documents and then destroy the paper. Photo text for mac. May 16, 2013 Adding text to images is a fairly simple process to begin with that is made even easier with Preview, the basic image viewing app that is bundled on all Macs. To convert PDF images to text on Mac, you must consider two aspects: freeware or share & security issue. As I have mentioned you should use Google Docs to obtain text from PDF image. It really is free. Add Text to Photos with Preview App on Mac This built-in app is rarely the first choice for Mac users who want to add text to photos, but completing this task with Preview App is remarkably easy. Open the app and import the photo you want to edit, then make sure to click on the 'Show Edit Toolbar' icon and select the 'Text Tool' feature.
Textplus for computer. It’s not suitable for editing, but for productivity, FocusWriter is hard to beat.
4. SoftMaker FreeOffice
Another great looking word processor, but watch your file formats
Can export to EPUB format
Text Editor For Mac
Opens password-protected files
TextMaker – the word processing element of SoftMaker FreeOffice – is good looking, and comes with several handy templates for creating letters and other everyday documents. The selection isn’t as extensive as some of its rivals’, but you can also make new designs for future use and save them in TMV format.
All the features you’d expect from a modern word processor are present and correct, including advanced formatting options, the ability to create databases for managing bibliographies and footnotes, and a function for tracking changes to collaborative projects.
The only real drawback of TextMaker is its inability to save your work in DOCX format (though you can open and edit these files with no difficulty). This feature is limited to the premium version of SoftMaker Office, which retails for £48.20 (about US$60, AU$75).
5. Writemonkey
Productivity-focused word processing with quick shortcuts
Distraction-free interface
Text Editor In Mac
Handy keyboard shortcuts
WriteMonkey is another no-frills word processor designed to help you maximize your output without fussing with editing and formatting. It’s not intended for documents like letters or CVs, but is great for committing early ideas to paper (or screen) so you have the raw material to develop later.
Unlike FocusWriter, which is compatible with all the most common text formats (including Microsoft’s DOC and DOCX), WriteMonkey only works with TXT files, so you’ll have to convert any works in progress before opening them. WriteMonkey’s hidden controls are tricker to navigate, too – everything is accessed via a large right-click menu, or a vast collection of keyboard shortcuts.
That said, if you’re happy to commit those shortcuts to memory, you’ll find WriteMonkey faster to use than toolbar-based alternatives.
We also like the ability to look words up in Wikipedia, Google Images, Poetry.com, Answers.com, and many others without opening a browser winder manually and leaving yourself open to the temptations of Twitter and Facebook.
Notepad For Mac
WriteMonkey is a portable app, so there’s no need to install it – just extract all the downloaded files to a removable drive or cloud storage service and fire it up by running the file WriteMonkey.exe.

What do you know about the 5 best free and open-source Pharmacy Software tools in Pakistan?

ChecPOS #1 Pharmacy Software in Pakistan is available, however, you will still need to purchase the item, regardless of whether it is a complete register/scanner/printer combo or just a workstation or tablet.
ChecPOS #1 Pharmacy Software in Pakistan

Now, find a couple of open source options, a truly free form (which is unusual in the world of Pharmacy, still in the world of product everywhere), and a freemium item. The majority of the arrangements have been introduced privately, where they have been determined, and they have been introduced in the configuration application.
1. Chrome Pharmacy
Chromos is a relative newcomer, which is the result of the separation from the Uniceta project recorded below. Conceived in 2015, Chromes is a Windows justice Software, running up to 10 on Windows XP. Open source Pharmacy Software in Pakistan Reinforces the red design for invoices and screens, the use of a legacy client database, kitchen screens for application display, and CSV-based item imports, which prove to be a permanent saver for organizations from scratch.
2. E-hopper
E-Hopper is a Pharmacy Software Arrangement designed to help traders comply with their financial limits, without giving up on their product standards. eHopper additionally seeks to prevent merchants from being stored in Softwares or equipment that are a poor fit for the organization. By the constraints, the free form only connects to a master card processor (A1 charge), support is limited, and you will not have the option to join with QuickBooks. You are forced to do a similar register and you do not have the option to use the Software worker clock highlights.
3. Fluorescent Pharmacy
Florent is a free and open-source company that works for cafes. It can run on Windows, Mac, or Linux, and in fact, it’s extremely free. The organization’s Software brings cash by helping organizations set up and offer consistent support.
You can use tablet computers to run floats in your cafe, taking Pharmacy Software in Pakistan Directly to your customers’ tables. Or, on the other hand, you can use the bar tabs and allow cards in advance, until the client finishes working overnight.
On these accessories, Florentine partners with kitchen printers, runs incredible reports, gives directors many tools, including purses and voids, and lets you effectively monitor menus and projects. A reasonable restriction is its cafe-centric focus. Every Florentine offer is incredible, except if you are selling new tires and caring. If you’re looking for a free cafe Pharmacy, this can be an incredible place to start.
4. Imonggo
Imonggo has been on the scene since 2010. The organization propelled a huge overhaul in late 2016 and now guarantees clients in more than 1,100 urban areas around the globe. Imonggo has additionally gotten together with Mercury/Vantiv, which is the Pharmacy Software in Pakistan Mastercard processor of decision (however card mix just comes at the paid level). Imonggo’s free form is appropriate to one area, supporting a solitary client in a solitary store. That store can oversee 1,000 items and 1,000 exchanges for each month. It’s a genuinely high breaking point, contingent upon the kind of store you run.
Your single area can utilize an iPad, Android tablet, PC, or Mac to run Imonggo—or, in other words, it’s electronic. This is a genuine article, as the free form doesn’t bolster disconnected mode. In the event that your web association is spotty, you should take a gander at an introduced choice.
5. Keyhut
Keyhut’s Cash Register programming is the brainchild of the incomparable Dale Harris, who is the web’s most noteworthy curmudgeon. His site merits taking a gander at regardless of whether you never need Pharmacy Software in Pakistan, essentially for a decent snicker. He is proud of himself and he is amusing. Why is Sales Register a totally free Pharmacy software? Dale says “One reason for the program is to assist little or medium business with competing with enormous chain stores. Be that as it may, for the most part, I am doing this to have a ton of fun.
It works with any sales register/printer/PC combo you may have (Though on the off chance that you run a 64-piece Software, you’ll have to run an extra program), and he’s thinking about growing the coding to incorporate tablets. For incredibly private companies, the product can be run off your home PC, if you wouldn’t fret receipts being imprinted on standard pieces of paper. This Software, in spite of being free, can really stand its ground among paid Pharmacy Softwares focused on private ventures. It can run numerous kinds of reports–including separating deals by the representative. It has some essential workers, the board, CRM, and stock following highlights.

Smart Devices Will Eventually Die, and the Internet Is to Blame
A version of this post originally appeared on Tedium, a twice-weekly newsletter that hunts for the end of the long tail.
Recently, I had a bizarre customer service experience involving a company that I have been critical of at many junctures over the years. That company was Apple, and the reason I was on the phone with them involved my wife’s smartphone of choice, the iPhone 5.
Sold to her in late 2012, the phone has somehow managed to avoid device upgrades for nearly eight years (despite my semi-frequent pleas that she upgrade to a new device). But when we had problems logging it into iCloud recently, I chose to call Apple, and shockingly found them not only willing to service this device over the phone, but work through a variety of solutions on the phone for many hours as we attempted to figure out why it wasn’t logging in.
It took a few calls and some in-depth diagnostic work, but we figured out the problem, and earlier this week I was able to get the phone working again, with Jesse’s help. We kept a vintage smartphone out of the waste bin for another day.
It was not what I was expecting—it flew in the face about what I know about Apple and upgrades. But the fact we’re seeing problems in the first place reflects something that has been on my mind a while: The lack of consideration towards the upgrade and decay cycle in modern tech, particularly in terms of consumer goods, is going to bite—hard—in a few years. And not every company will be as understanding as this Apple support tech person (his name is Jesse) that clearly deserves a raise.
It’s time to have a talk about the coming gadget apocalypse that we haven’t been preparing for. Strap in.
Moore’s Flaw: Part of the problem we’re seeing is a computing mindset brought to standard consumer electronics
Recently, the speaker company Sonos has been taking a beating in the press for revealing an inevitable, but likely avoidable fact: Its early devices won’t last forever.
Founded in 2002, Sonos is one of the first companies that found success taking a traditional piece of electronics, the speaker, and making it “smart.”
The company, in its efforts to encourage those customers to upgrade and discourage the use of old speakers or bridge devices on its cloud servers past the point of old age, effectively kneecapped them—they can’t be upgraded to next-generation software, and keeping them in your setup could prevent your other devices from getting upgrades, too.
Sound like a bum deal? Fortunately for their investors, they sell a replacement.
The company attempted to clear up its self-inflicted mess by pointing out the devices will still work even without updates, but even with the clarifications, it’s still sticking with the original plan—no updates after May.
In one sense, you can’t blame Sonos for not planning for a future like this. As a startup, how was it supposed to know that it would be supporting speakers that it sold more than a decade ago? The odds were even it was setting itself up for an acquisition, a long life, or a noble failure.
But on the other hand, we have different expectations for audio equipment than we do computing devices. Think about it this way: If you buy a 1960s-era Fender Stratocaster from a pawn shop and it’s still in relatively good condition, and plug it into an amplifier that was produced this year, that guitar is still going to work.

This Bose 901 speaker will continue to work decades from now. Image: Automotive Rhythms/Flickr
If you plug a pair of vintage Bose 901 speakers into a modern audio system, those speakers should work, because ultimately the principles on which Dr. Amar Bose built that equipment haven’t changed in 50 years. It’s what allows a MiniDisc player, a record player, and an iPod dock to live on the same bookshelf.
The problem is, computers have never had these kinds of expectations around them. Sure, you can find some legacy ports on modern computing devices—this recent Vaio laptop has a VGA port, which made its first appearance on a computer in 1987 and still has use cases in boardrooms where old projector equipment lives—but for the most part computing equipment doesn’t work like that. It goes through generational phases.
Part of the reason for this is that computers move faster than other kinds of electronics. While some of the concepts, like soldered integrated circuits and processor sockets, mostly work the same generation after generation, the technology simply moves too fast to allow for hand-me-downs. If you were to reuse a desktop computer from 1996 and upgrade it to account for modern needs, basically the only thing you might be able to reuse is the case, which likely utilizes the ATX form factor.
Planned obsolescence has been built into the computer model since the beginning. In many ways, Moore’s Law, Gordon Moore’s observation that computing power would keep improving exponentially, detected the trend early and has at times enabled it.
Applying these standards to electronics that could once last generations creates a whole lot of discomfort. This can be seen, for example, in the case of the Apple Watch. Recently, Apple’s watch line, a somewhat minor part of its financial picture, outdid the entirety of the Swiss watch industry, which has been around for hundreds of years and has a completely different value proposition than your average laptop.
If you sell gadgets more often, it’s easier to print money. But it means that devices that were once built to last are now suddenly targets of planned obsolescence.
Look, technology moves fast. For decades, the world of computers surged past gate after gadgetary gate in search of the next new thing. The problem with Moore’s Law is not that it didn’t encourage more innovation, but it didn’t account for what we did with the old innovation.
Now, add the internet to the mix, and make it a defining element of its use case. And the problem becomes obvious. Companies don’t want to have to think about things they sold 20 years ago, but the smart device model, by default, requires that they do. Or, it should.
Let’s take another look at Sonos here. This is a company that leapt into a space where speakers could last generations, and decided that it couldn’t even let its devices survive for a single generation. Sure, it will still work, the CEO says, but the lack of updates clearly tips the scales in favor of a future upgrade. Computing power had advanced too much for those old workhorses to stay in use.
You can sell a 30-year-old car and it maintains some semblance of value, especially if it’s been well-maintained. Products like baseball cards and books still remain things people want to buy many years after they were first produced. But if a smart speaker company can’t promise that your internet-enabled device will be able to hook up to the internet eight years after you bought it, it’s useless.
Because, remember, a loss of updates doesn’t just mean you’ll get the fanciest new features—but it means you won’t get access to security updates that will keep the device alive for decades to come. Look at what I’ve already seen from my Mac Mini! Many consumer products have far higher standards for longevity than 15 years.
By allowing computers to infiltrate everything else—by adding things to our internet—we’ve decimated the long-term value of these products unnecessarily, all for someone else’s short-term gain.
And this is only the first wave of a problem that’s going to get a hell of a lot worse before it gets better.

Early-generation Roku devices, like the Roku XDS, recently lost access to Netflix. Image: Roku
The Sonos speaker saga is the first wave of what is likely going to be an entire generation of stuff broken by the internet
As I mentioned earlier, Sonos was early to this concept—not as early as, perhaps, The Clapper, but early enough that it might have been the first internet-connected smart device that most people might have encountered.
Another company that was early to this smart device model, Roku, also retired some of its early models recently, and Netflix stopped working on some of Roku’s early-gen devices, along with some smart TVs of the period made by other companies.
As I wrote a few weeks ago, it doesn’t feel quite as bad in the case of Roku, because they charge so little for their devices that buying a replacement box is trivial and worth the cost.
But the news about the early-gen smart TVs also getting the boot gives me pause. These sets, while no longer the latest and greatest and largely predating the recent 4K trend, are perfectly fine televisions. They should work for the next 20 years without a problem. But because Netflix arbitrarily raised its standards, it stopped supporting these sets, which is annoying.
While there is a way to work around losing Netflix on a smart TV set—easy, buy another set-top box that supports the device in some way—it just feels wasteful and cumbersome. The functionality is already in the set, after all! Instead of letting these sets slowly lose functionality, we should offer simple hardware upgrades that keep them up to date with modern standards while not limiting the other 95 percent of an otherwise perfectly fine TV. Put a slot in the back that upgrades the device’s brain. Easy.
These devices came out in 2010 and 2011 or so, and what worries me is what is to come.
In the decade between the release of the first smart TVs and now, the smart device trend really picked up in earnest, affecting things as varied as watches, drinking cups, thermostats, smoke detectors, toothbrushes, and even smart Gibson guitars (which didn’t work out for the guitar company).
Already, new signs are emerging. Just last week, word surfaced that Philips was going to stop updating early Hue Bridge devices, limiting their future connectivity and threatening their security.

Image: David Berkowitz/Flickr
According to a 2009 study from the National Association of Home Builders and Bank of America, the average thermostat is supposed to last 35 years. Can we trust that Google is going to support first-gen Nest thermostats for that long? It’s not like a smartphone.
Extend this to every device that you own that has a computer in its brain and a connection to the internet, that didn’t have those two things a decade ago, and you see the problem.
The microchip, in the long run, has turned things that were functionally fine (if “dumb”) into devices that may not make it into a second decade if they fail to get the ongoing support they need. Many of these devices were built by startups that have since left this world; others have become the victims of lacking warranties. Sure, in some of these cases, you can work around the faults of these things, but smart devices give the sheen of planned obsolescence to objects that could have lasted decades without continued internet access.
That awkward conversation Sonos just had with its customers about smart devices? Expect lots of other companies—including big ones—to have similar discussions in the coming years, with little to no path to repair in the future.
In the span of a single decade, we basically let a computer-centric mindset around planned obsolescence threaten to ruin the long-term usability of entire categories of products unnecessarily.
The solution here is not to fret or just drink water out of regular non-smart glasses, but to push electronics and gadget manufacturers to do better. If a device seems like something that should not stop working after eight or nine years, they need to guarantee upgrades more than a decade in the future. The design of these smart products, when applicable, should allow for user-replaceable hardware.
And for devices where their long-term use must be guaranteed, they need to offer dumb versions with the capability of getting smart upgrades. Let the user decide if they want a computer in their oven—and make that computer easy to plug in and replace, so that a decade down the road, they’re not stuck with a failed investment of a device.
We can’t bank on large devices being smart forever. We should have the ability to remove that functionality—or upgrade it as needed. That’s how we ensure hand-me-downs are worth handing down decades from now.
If they can’t promise that, don’t go smart.
Going back to my recent phone call with an Apple customer support rep, I think that the superhuman effort to attempt to get this phone working past its expiration date was super-noble.
But on the other hand, I wonder why it should have been super-noble. (No fault of Jesse!)
The base of the problem we’re seeing with this not-particularly-vintage gadget comes down to space and lack of upgrades. Apple has never offered a device with a MicroSD card, but for years sold devices with so little space that you would suddenly be out of storage with less-than-normal use. This is bad enough on its laptops, but in the case of its phones, it feels increasingly unforgivable over time, because it kneecaps these devices unnecessarily. I mean, this whole saga began because her 16-gigabyte phone runs out of space basically daily, and I tried to delete and redownload some apps for her to clear the phone’s cached space, and found what appeared to be aggressive bugs in iCloud in the process.

This phone is nearly eight years old and hasn’t received software updates from Apple for roughly three years. Image: Lucy Takakura/Flickr
I’ve been trying to figure out why Jesse cared so much about this phone when everything else about Apple’s actions has traditionally suggested that they would leave my wife’s phone high and dry. The best answer I have is that Apple, while I don’t think they’ve learned their lesson, is realizing this approach is not sustainable in the long term—at least not with these specific gadgets. Or at least some of their employees are.
I didn’t call and say, “My wife’s phone isn’t working.” I called and said, “My wife can’t log into her iCloud on her phone.” That may seem like a small difference, but I think it’s a significant one in terms of how Apple responded to this. It’s the difference between, “I’m having trouble with something you no longer support,” and, “This problem could cost you money now if you don’t fix.”
Technology is going to keep evolving and over time we are going to reach theoretical limits of devices. But if they’re talking to the cloud and people are paying money to access those cloud services, eventually those devices are going to matter less to our tech companies. The cloud is going to matter far more—and it’s going to be in their interest to keep these devices functional in the long haul because their profitability will continue to matter even as the device ages.
I can’t imagine that Netflix will unceremoniously kill another generation of smart TVs without thinking really hard about it—because killing the next gen of smart TVs will hurt a lot more than killing the last one. It will cost them money.
I hope the pendulum shifts in this way. Because that is how planned obsolescence will lose.

Samsung Chromebook Plus Pro review
yahoo
Google’s (GOOG, GOOGL) Chromebooks are, by and large, excellent, low-cost alternatives to more expensive Windows PCs and Apple’s MacBooks. They get you online and let you stream movies and music. You can even play a few games on your Chromebook.
And now, with the Samsung Chromebook Plus, available Feb. 12, and Pro, available this April, Chromebooks let you run any of the millions of Android apps available through the Google Play Store right out of the box.
To be sure, the Chromebook Plus and Pro aren’t the first Chromebooks to offer Android app compatibility; three older Chromebooks can already run Android apps via software updates. But these are the first Chromebooks purpose-built with Android apps in mind.
The Plus and Pro aren’t perfect, though. There are still some kinks to work out when it comes to running Android apps on a 12-inch laptop. And they’ve got some stiff competition in the form of Apple’s iPad Pro.
Still, for the first time, I’m genuinely considering buying a Chromebook.
Plus and Pro: The same, but different
Let’s get one thing out of the way before I dive into this review: the difference between the Plus and the Pro. In general, the systems are identical. They share the same design, though the Plus is silver and the Pro is black; the have the same 12.3-inch screen and they both included styluses. Styli? Stylusses? You know what? Let’s just say they both have pens.

The main difference between the Samsung Chromebook Plus and Pro is on the inside.
The main difference between these systems is their processors. The Chromebook Plus runs on an ARM processor and costs $449, while the Chromebook Pro gets a more powerful Intel chip and costs $549.
How do you decide between the two? Easy. The Plus is meant for basic web browsing and gaming. Think people who check their email or use Google Drive often. The Pro, on the other hand, is for folks who tend to browse the web with 20 tabs open, while streaming music through Spotify and perusing Twitter and Facebook.
Handsome hardware
The Plus and Pro are thin and lightweight at just 0.55 inches thick and 2.4 pounds, respectively. I packed the Chromebook Plus into my backpack along with my regular MacBook Air 13-inch and hardly noticed the added weight.
Unlike most Chromebooks, the Plus and Pro also double as tablets thanks to their 360-degree-hinged, 12.3-inch, 2,400 x 1,600 resolution displays. I watched some movies and browsed the web and found the Pro’s display to be crisp and colorful.
Apple’s 12.9-inch and 9.7-inch iPad Pros are both thinner, lighter and have higher resolution screens than Samsung’s Chromebooks. But Apple’s offerings are also far more expensive. The 9.7-inch iPad Pro starts at $599, while the 12.9-inch model starts at $799. And that’s without the added cost of a keyboard and stylus.
Styling stylus
Speaking of styluses, the Chromebook Plus and Pro’s each have small ports built into their sides to store the pens when not in use. The iPad Pro does not.
Writing with the stylus feels incredibly natural thanks to a bit of added resistance provided by its tip and Google’s machine learning magic.

The Chromebook Plus and Pro use Google’s machine learning software to cut down on lag when writing with the stylus.
See, Google has programmed the Plus and Pro to understand how most people write. As a result, the Chromebooks are able to predict how fast you’re jotting something down, and all but eliminate the kind of lag that makes writing with a stylus feel unnatural. The Plus and Pro’s displays are also pressure sensitive — so if you press hard while writing, you’ll see a wider, darker pen stroke.
Keyboard problems
The Plus and Pro are well-built machines, but they do have some problems. Compared to the full-size keyboard on my MacBook Air, the Chromebooks’ keyboards feel cramped, leading me to strike the wrong keys on occasion.
What’s more, the Chromebook Plus and Pro only feature USB C ports, so you’ll need to purchase a separate adapter if you want to connect legacy devices like printers. On the flip side, though, the Plus and Pro is a microSD card slot and headphone jack.
As far as battery life goes, I spent the majority of my day typing away on the Chromebook Pro and didn’t need to plug it in until I got home at night.
Android goes Chrome
It’s great that the Plus and Pro are well-built, but the biggest reason you’d by these Chrome OS-powered machines is that they run Android apps.
Core Google apps like Gmail, YouTube and Calendar all run in Chrome browser-style windows, while a handful of others like Maps and the Play Store run in their own independent, resizable Windows. But third-party apps need a bit more polish.

Samsung’s Chromebook Plus and Pro are the first Chromebooks purpose-built for using Android apps.
Twitter, Facebook, Netflix and Spotify all run as enlarged versions of their smartphone or tablet versions. Spotify in particular is difficult to navigate, due to the app’s confusing and stretched interface. Hulu also proved bothersome, as the Chrome OS toolbar cut off subtitles.
I also noticed that I couldn’t watch videos in Netflix while browsing the web in Chrome, which was a major pain, especially when I was trying to stream “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” at the office while pretending to do work. Apple’s iPad Pro, on the other hand, lets you stream Netflix and Hulu while browsing the web via picture-in-picture mode.
But again, you’re going to pay a lot more money for that privilege compared to Samsung’s Chromebooks.
Should you buy it?
Sure, you’re not going to get the kind of performance out of a Chromebook that you would out of a more powerful Windows PC or MacBook, but the Plus and Pro will prove to be more than enough for the majority of users.
In other words, if you want a low-cost alternative to your PC, Mac or even iPad Pro, go for the Chromebook Plus or Pro.
