Applying a magnetic field to rod-like viruses induces them to form disks of tunable shape and size
Seeking to mimic self-assembly processes that occur naturally, RIKEN researchers have demonstrated that the self-assembly of rod-shaped viruses can be controlled by applying a magnetic field. This could help in the development of artificial self-assembly processes that are more controllable than existing ones. The study is published in Nature Communications. When constructing a house, a bricklayer has to take each brick and cement it in place. But in many biological processes, the "bricks" arrange themselves into structures spontaneously. Due to their high efficiency and precision, such self-assembly processes are increasingly being used in areas such as nanotechnology and materials science.

I had a few quick sketches I had made throughout my day of different relations I have from family, friends, and also love. I had multiple ideas of using different objects that you find and will connect together or to something and compared them with each of my relations.

Magnet;
I used magnet to represent the relationship between me and my mother, I quoted it as 'trying to make it work, but it won't'. I used this quote to represent how two magnets will push each other away rather than connect together like they would when they're on a fridge. Me and my mams relationship is always rocky and we always try to make it work with each other but in the end we will always push away from each other and keep our distance than try to keep it the way it was while I was younger. I thought magnet was just the perfect representation for me and her.

Cups and lids;
Cups and lids were my representations of me and my younger sisters. 'Like a cup, some lids are too small they just fall in'. My sisters are younger than me, and physically and mentally smaller and younger. I had an idea of using these objects that connect together for them because of the distance in our age, and how they're so small they fall from my arms because I'm not going to be there with them forever and they will never get to know me for the real me, and who I am as a person because of how distant we can be towards each other as well.

Plug and socket;
My use of the plug and socket was for me and boyfriend and the love I have in my life with him. 'The right plug is made for the right person.' I realised the plug and socket could represent intimacy between two people in different ways, not just in a sexual but emotional way. I had the idea of us being the plug and socket for each other because it represents how well we are with each other, in so many ways, which is the positive of most of these ideas. The thought of us being together reminded me of electricity, because with love, it has some sort of zing between it, like a plug gaining electricity from the socket.

Lego;
Lego was my only representation I could think of for my friendships. 'The lego pieces will always be connected, not always so perfectly but the ones that work, do.' I thought this was a perfect description of having friends, you will have your friends that will click in and work perfectly like two lego pieces that were meant to work will, but sometimes they will come loose and you'll lose them, but when they're right they'll stay stuck together and you can't lose them.
All of my relations I have in real life I was easily able to figure out which fits which object I had thought about using originally for my main object related project, but switching from just the plugs and sockets to making it related to my real life makes it so much easier for me to come up with more ideas for my project. :)

Geary is a robot from Teknee and is Velo's most trusted and fastest racer, he his described to be the pinnacle of robotics, Geary has the belief that only robots achieve perfection and motion, however he also suffers from a form a OCD, having the urge to clean everything that's filthy or dirty
After losing, Velo will yell at him for failing and punishes him by ordering him to clean the trophy podium and the entire coliseum
If playing as Team Bandicoot, Geary will clean and scrub Crash
If playing as Team Cortex, Geary will clean and scrub Tiny

Teknee is a futuristic like planet with advanced technology everywhere such as flying cars, floating signs and trains
Assembly Lane is a polluted factory with conveyer belts, pistons, pipes, oil spills, tractor beams and a giant magnetic device, the outdoor sections are similar to Glacier Park's Tiny Arena while the indoor sections are similar to Citadel City's N. Gin Labs
Android Alley is a futuristic city with trains and flying cars in the background, there's also Cleaning Bots and Cortex's robotic Scrubbers, the strategy guide describes the course like an action movie, this is also Geary's boss track who will use a Soap Sprinkler as a weapon
Electron Avenue is a hyper advanced neon light city in the sky, with large skyscrapers, neon signs, flying vehicles, electric fences, and holographic plants and cactuses the city has synthwave aesthetic

Magnetic cilia—artificial hairs whose movement is powered by embedded magnetic particles—have been around for a while, and are of interest for applications in soft robotics, transporting objects and mixing liquids. However, existing magnetic cilia move in a fixed way. Researchers have now demonstrated a technique for creating magnetic cilia that can be "reprogrammed," changing their magnetic properties at room temperature to change the motion of the cilia as needed. Most magnetic cilia make use of "soft" magnets, which do not generate a magnetic field but become magnetic in the presence of a magnetic field. Only a few previous magnetic cilia have made use of 'hard' magnets, which are capable of producing their own magnetic field.

IT SPINS! Handmade electric motor! Entirely out of wire! They said it couldn't be done, but I have proven -- it merely shouldn't be done!
Photos don't really capture how ridiculously complicated this thing was to build, so I managed to film myself assembling the components too! Very proud of that.
In total, I've been working on this project on and off for roughly two years. This motor is my third version, though I went through something like seven designs of the commutator section (not counting how many failures it took to build a working example of a given design). I'm very proud of getting this to work at all.
Some close-up photos of all the components:
Six-way commutator. As the motor spins, this delivers electricity to only the correct pair of magnets at a time, leaving the other four off.

Magnet coils. I wound these by hand from very thin insulated wire. The center is a spiral of thicker insulated wire (darker orange) that protects the thin stands from the steel core and then wraps around the outside to hold everything in place.

Spring-loaded arms. These deliver electricity from the stationary frame into the rotating axle. They also have to hinge up out of the way or else there's no room to fit the rotor in place during assembly.
