Writing Share: Where the Hell Am I?
Thanks for the tag @ilovevewritingfanfic !
This is from the POV of an NPC from project.worldsD&D. He started as the main villain in Adventure 1 and was taken in by the group to hopefully rehabilitate him during their second adventure. He's also now romancable for the players, and at least one of the group is excited for that, lol.
With a groan, Malil's eyes fluttered open. His body ached and his wings felt like they were weighed with lead to make them droop behind him. Dirt and ash lined the floor of his cell as he oriented himself.
He was hanging with his arms above his head, that's what was causing his wings to droop and his body to ache. No, the bloody fight with his sister is why his body ached.
Glancing around proved this was not the cells of the Mountain Keep in the city of Ursa or the catacombs of Artificum. Shiny metal walls that shimmered every few seconds with a blue hue - a pulsing of energy - made Malil hiss and bare his sharpened teeth. A metal box with no way out.
What did Lerissa do with him after he was detached from the Star of Decay?
Where the hell was he?
Thanks for reading! Hit me up with a DM if you'd like to be added to my taglists for any of my projects!
No pressure tagging @the-golden-comet, @jev-urisk, @illarian-rambling, + an open tag!

So, Caves of Qud is not nearly as complicated as was rumored. It's certainly complicated, but the same argument could be made of anything. Is Warframe complicated? No, you just keep pressing the melee button hold down the melee button and do the next node on the star chart. Now, here's a movie-length video explaining damage types...
Qud is certainly detailed in that it has a huge world with lots of parts. Everywhere I go I find a statue mentioning some "dynamically-generated" lore clueing me in to the location of a hidden ruin or lost artifact, and my quest log is stuffed with them. Everything has statuses for when it's wet, bleeding, bloody; there are puddles of blood generated wherever something bleeding walks, or gets killed, and there are puddles of "dilute salt" whenever I terrify a creature—I think they run away pissing themselves. All these puddles have a volume as well, it's not just "a puddle of blood," it's "a puddle of 7 drams of blood."
It's certainly an extremely hard game. That part lives up to the hype. I made my first character a Pilgrim. They died in about fifteen minutes. I made my second character the same build because I liked it and I wanted to try it some more, and I named them "the Second Pilgrim." They died in about ten minutes. Seeing the writing on the wall, I made my next character in Roleplay mode—so it checkpoints you at towns and you can reload if you die. They're named "the Final Pilgrim." They have died... so many times, mostly at the Malil Coinsquare, depicted above. ...mostly from adventures starting at the Malil Coinsquare, but then I have a spacetime rift mishap and get randomly teleported 30 layers deep below the lake and meet a bunch of impossible-level albino apes who are fighting some robotic mine-layers, but they declare a truce to gang up on me. And then a rogue esper from the outer mind sends their mind-clone to hunt me down.
...see, that sounds complicated, but it's not that bad. It's just flavor. Random encounters happen in many games, this one's just happen have to have this heightened exoticness about it. The game's writing overall is very—well, some of it is the mad-libbed dynamic history, but the stuff that's not, item descriptions and main NPCs, it's very... look, here's some examples:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the game has this hyperbolic, eerie atmosphere to everything. It's extremely enchanting and captivating. Even though these ruins are essentially randomized, I want to explore and find things because I know it's going to be a challenge to get there, I know I'm going to be challenged when I get there, and I might find a painted flaming iron dagger which is engraved with a scene from Sultan Resheph's past, which the Coiled Lambs will want to know about, and they'll teach me how to make their traditional meal—broken microchips and bandits' feet—if I tell them about it.
I did do the tutorial, after I attempted it myself. It didn't teach me anything I didn't already know, just the basics on opening menus, equipping items, moving around, that sort of thing. Again—nothing complicated here. Something like Wurm, as an extreme example, makes everything from walking to looking in your pocket a challenge with half a dozen spreadsheets and hotkeys on half the keyboard. In Qud, I'm playing totally with the mouse (except I have to press Esc to close the ability menu; other menus close if you right-click) and even then, mostly it's just right-click to get a menu of options.
See, I watched Sseth's video, and he likes to harp on the hypercomplexity and insanity of every game he reviews. "Become an Esper and mutate the power to give your enemies a fatal brain aneurysm from across the map!" Yes, or play FFXIV and become a Blue Mage, freeze your enemies solid, and explode their frozen bodies with a cermet drill! The buttons are the same, it's all flavor. You get these ASCII-art, text-heavy games like this, Dwarf Fortress, Rogue and whatnot, and since you don't have to visually depict everything, you can just have a bunch of @ signs on the screen and make them different shade of red, and then say whatever you want—it makes it seem absurdly complex and intricate. But it boils down to "press A to deal 3d6 damage."
Now, I'm not trying to disparage the game. As usual, I'm talking to myself, thinking out loud, dissuading myself from my original impression that it was complicated as hell. Heck, gacha games are more complicated than this, simply because they have so many menus and daily sign-ins to tick off. But, again, there are a lot of moving parts—and I don't have nearly all of them. I can put a forcefield around an enemy so I can walk up to them and blast them with my shotgun at point blank—and still miss, because I have no agility. I can jump into someone's mind and command them to kill themself—I don't get any exp for that, though, sadly. I can persuade someone to ally themselves with me, and then "accidentally" explode them when I cast Disintegrate to burrow through the cave walls because I "accidentally" teleported myself into a tiny pocket deep underground somewhere. And, yes, I can give enemies an aneurysm from across the map—unless they don't have a brain. You'd be surprised how many hostile plants there are!
This is a wonderful game with the promise of a grand—if somewhat randomized—adventure. And, I can say "somewhat" because there is some kind of MSQ to the game, and there's some level of fixedness: the world map is always the same, the locations of major... locations, is always the same. There's some kind of key thread to it all that I'd like to discover. Meanwhile, locations of minor sites and the contents of dungeons are random, but it's seeded, so if you're on Roleplay mode so you can reload your save, it's going to be the same each time. I don't know if the Malil Coinsquare is in everyone else's game, if it's in the same location, if it has the same contents, if they have that goddamned centipede nest that swarms the map before you can get to it...
And! The music is lovely, too. It's very atmospheric, ambient, and some parts have this primal, tribal kind of vibe to it—which is fitting when I'm in a marsh surrounded by a tribe of salt-encrusted turtles who seem to be at war with dragonflies. And it flows from one song to another without interrupting, it just blends gently and half the time I don't even notice when it changed. I've put a lot of hours into this game in my first week, and honestly a lot of that time is just having it on in the background while I'm working, just because the music is so chill. Usually chill.
Eventually I'll get to the Deathlands where a chrome pyramid surrounded by a forcefield will shoot 100 missiles at me every turn, but, hey, that's a problem for later.
...if I can survive these spacetime shenanigans, that is...

Baldur's Gate 3, new epilogue spoilers
One quick non spoiler: I really like this new epilogue. I think it gels really well with the regular ending. But it's got some fun additional dialogue with your party.
Minthara continues to be the best.
So, in the post credits scene where Raphael gives you the sarcastic slow clap for helping Gale ascend to godhood is he actually alive? Because I killed him during the boss fight at the House of Pleasure. Or are devils in Dungeons and Dragons something that can't truly die? I like to assume it's just the game giving me shit for making bad choices and convincing Gale to just go for it.
Also,I'm guessing Malil is a reference to one of the older Baldur's Gates games.

Adventure 1, Chapter 2 of Shifting Worlds
The players, Masterlist
Amon Drakerock, the dwarven card master.  Anton, the halfing wizard.  Zephyr, the elemental demon absolute healer.  Ghita Skarsgard, the Shadar-Kai rogue that mutliclassed into barbarian.  First Portion: Dug, the alchemical automaton artificer.  Second Portion: Mayis, the tielfing gunslinger pirate.
Chapter Two: The Adventure Ahead
Aboard the ship the PCs talk and bond with the main NPCs Princess Creed, Captain Jassan, and Head Artificer Medrash. Anton nurses his crush on Creed. About halfway through the five day journey, the Alchemical Dragon and its crew begin acting strangely - on edge, aggressive, frustrated, and irritated - save for Medrash, Jassan, and Creed.
While investigating the airship to find the cause of the crew’s unease, the players discover a locked room, they break in, and in the room they find a large black mirror that was seemingly pieced together in a frame that’s not its own. They find that the mirror is from the All-Mother to the Giants during the Giant-Fae war that nearly destroyed all livable lands of the world thousands of years ago. They break the mirror that seems to show a void staring back at them, watching their every move. It seriously injures Creed and minorly injures several of the players. They continue on to the Cursed Mountain after the crew returned to normal in order to finish their job for the Empress.
The Alchemical Dragon lands in High Sun, the Elven city on one side of the Cursed Mountain. Across the mountain range is the Dwarven city of Low Moon. They speak with the leader of High Sun, Solaris Reyora Volthar, and are given the most up to date information possible on the situation at hand. There are many more missing people than they expected and exponentially more than were reported back to Empress Lerissa. The group, including Creed, decides the best course of action is to load up on some resources in High Sun before hiking straight for the Cursed Mountain before they lose all of their daylight. On the slope of the mountain the group encounters a group of fiends, and during these attacks Creed collapses to the ground prone clutching her head in agony. After a few fiends are killed, the last one dies a horrific death of melting into itself with a sigil etched into its face.
They enter the cave system and mined out tunnels of what they’ve come to know as Mereth/Crimson Mountain. After investigating the higher levels, the group descends to the mine tunnels. In the twisting tunnel paths they discover the decaying corpses of many of the missing folks from both High Sun and Low Moon. They find one survivor to rescue and continue to investigate the mines. In the main cavity of the mines they find devils speaking to each other in front of a mirror similar to the one they destroyed on the Alchemical Dragon. While eavesdropping they find out that Lord Commander Malil has staged and went through with a coup d'etat once they left Artificum and they were going to be walking back into a trap to be executed. Lerissa Hellsfenn will be executed in three days. The group collectively decides to abandon their current mission of assisting in the retrieval of the corpses to save their companion’s mother and ensure later payment. They decided, after killing the devils, to take the black mirror and hang it from the hull of their airship as they flew back to Artificum.

can i ask about. basic stuff for All Of Them? like what class and race are they and what're their pronouns and stuff?
!!!! ok so Imma just go down the list by character. (also I realized this got long, so more under the cut)
Reina: Cyborg Rogue (inquisitor archetype). She/her pronouns, 25 years old. Very trusting, yet also knows when to be careful who to trust. She is kind to everyone until given reason not to be, and can kick someone’s ass if they get on her bad side.
Scarleth: Cyborg Engineer, she/her, 25 years old. Caring grandma vibes, gives everyone friendly pet names, has a slight southern accent. She’s also insanely intelligent.
Blayse: Cyborg Rogue (scout archetype), he him, 25 years old. (and yes, there is a reason all the cyborgs are the same age.) Very laid back, likes to joke around a lot but knows when it’s time to be serious.
Vimak: Also goes by Via for short. Goliath Bard (Glamor college) she/her, 27 years. She is a raging lesbian who still flirts with everyone, gives everyone several nicknames, and loves making jokes. Her main instrument of choice is a black violin her adoptive father left behind when he was abducted, and she’s vowed to get revenge on the man that not only killed her birth parents and most of her home town, but the man that took her father away from her.
Cirikro: Drow Bard (lore college), he/him, 107 years old. He is very bi, and is Via’s adoptive father. He took Via in when the man killed her parents right in front of her, and saved her from being taken right then. His main instrument of choice is his black violin that he hand-crafted, the same violin that he began teaching his daughter with. He likes wood-working and eventually, after he’s saved from the man that took him, he hand makes a pastel blue violin for Via.
Malil: Tiefling warlock, he/him, age unknown. He has had a grudge on Via’s birth parents for ages, and so when the time was right he ended up killing them while Via was a child. Ever since Cirikro saved Via, he vowed revenge and one day while Via was out traveling, he stormed into her house, killing her wife and taking Cirikro with him. He’s... a very fucked up dude.
Prya: Human barbarian, she/her, 17 years old. She was born into a post-apocalyptic world, the result of a long war between one god-like being and one demon. She lost her mom and her sister at a young age, and later she took in a little kid who reminder her of her sister, only to fall asleep on her watch, leading her adoptive kid to being killed while they slept. Ever since then she refused to stay in one place for too long, not wanting to risk someone coming in and hurting the only person she has left, her boyfriend.
Connie: Human, class unknown, she/her, 16 years old. She was my first OC and started as a gravity falls character back when I was hyperfixated on that. She lived with her aunt, Lady Susan, though the two were never close. Connie was chosen as the next generation to defeat Bill once and for all, and was a part of a trio. The three had different powers that complemented each other, though I can’t exactly remember the other two’s powers.
Lastly, Blair: in dnd: High elf ranger. In original story: Scottish alien princess archer. she/her, 24 years old. She’s aroace, and was a princess of another planet. When she was a child, she was banished to Scotland on Earth when she saw something she wasn’t supposed to, and her memories of her home had been wiped. She became the first female archer to join the guard, though after a late night ambush she fled the country and decided to live on her own in a cabin in the woods, until her family sent someone to bring her back home when she was needed most.
