My favorite trans Senku fic has Senku's study of diseases in Africa be in Mali (which has a small portion within the geographic range of lion habitat so it works), and it made me think about how while Senku could have spoken English during his study, it'd be interesting if he actually picked up some other languages.

Wikipedia says Mali uses French for official standardized stuff, but the majority of the population actually speaks various other languages, most predominantly Bambara and other languages in the Mande language family. So if we follow the Mali headcanon it'd be possible that Senku could learn some Bambara from the scientists he was working with, though assuming that there were other international students there English was most likely used among their group for communication.

Headcanon that they revive the scientists Senku worked with and since they last saw him when he was in middle school they're all like OH MY GOD it's little Senku! You're all grown up! And he's like aw geez guys.

seemingly born of winter itself, the boy of only three was abandoned found seeking refuge in winter town as a snowstorm raged. his origin unknown, even to he who only remembered the cold, the sense of knowing death, and the image of a woman ( mother ) leaving him behind. he didn't speak but understood, following after the guards who found him when they led him toward the castle. silence held strong even when theon was eventually brought before the ruling lord and lady of winterfell - though not out of fear. some wondered if he could speak at all. it was lady leona who fought against sending him to an orphanage, turning toward her lord husband, insisting it was the old gods who'd guided theon to winterfell, a sign that he belonged here. and so it was decided. bestowed the name theon ( for he gave no name when asked if he had one ), he became a stark as winter howled outside.

silence filled his initial days. the people around him called him a stark but his mind didn't believe it, believing instead that one day the starks would tell him to leave or something else would destroy the seemingly peaceful home. as the moons passed and his silence persisted, worry grew, his mother's worry was strongest of all, making her hover and also write to any maester she could in hopes that someone would have an answer - they all said the same: time was most likely the only cure. no one knows what shifted in the young heir, not even theon himself could point to a precise event beyond sitting under the weirwood tree and a feeling of certainty washing over him. when the feeling didn't fade, he spoke at last.

the years passed and theon devoted himself to his duties and studies. he was his father's shadow, following him to all of his meetings where he would drink in all the information he could and eventually voice his own opinions and questions. blessed with a sharp mind, the lessons of lordship were absorbed with great speed as were lessons of sword fighting. he would never be the strongest in terms of muscle but theon was swift, silent, and unrelenting with a particular fondness for training at night or in the woods where he could use the shadows to his advantage. a sign of the wildness that lurked beneath the surface, a wolf in all the ways that mattered for one who bore the noble northern name. devotion to his home, family, and gods were unwavering. sleepless nights not uncommon as he poured over documents and sparred in the training yard until his muscles ached. he remained a man of few words, preferring to observe first and speak second, and allowing his actions to speak for him. his parents' pride was palpable, and as theon ventured beyond winterfell, for a wolf must wander so he could know freedom, the people of the north saw their future rested in capable hands.

journeys south proved far less frequent than visits to northern bannermen and the wall that shielded the realm from foes that theon never questioned existed. if dragons could cast shadows upon the earth then so too could the northern legends prove true. however, the ruling lord encouraged his son to travel beyond the north's southern border, seeing the value in forging ties. but theon found more reasons to distaste the south than reasons to enjoy it. he often felt like an outsider, a dark shadow invading an otherwise bright, at least on the surface, scene. returning north was always welcomed. the sole exception was the truly unexpected bond he found with dragonstone prince; differences didn't prevent strong brotherhood from tying ice and fire together - a bond that has lasted for years.

theon's commitment to his duty as heir was unquestionable, and a part of that duty was marriage. he thought little of love, assuming he would wed whoever his parents decided was the best match for the north. and then he met shirei manderly. suddenly his thoughts were drifting to her when they were apart and the pages of his journals reflected the feelings growing. denial could only last so long. when feelings were not only admitted but reciprocated, there was no turning back in his eyes. the pair soon wed in winterfell's gods wood, a stark cloak wrapped around her shoulders and theon's heart placed in her hands.

gradually, more responsibilities were placed upon theon's shoulders; lord jon was getting older and thus it was crucial that theon take an even greater active role in ruling. his father had always let him be involved but now he was looking to theon, wanting his opinion first and then voicing his own, sometimes pointing out the pitfalls in the heir's initial assessments, though that grew less as theon learned. whenever trouble threatened the north, no matter how small, it was theon who rushed to its defense, allowing him to further prove his capabilities to both father and bannermen, who he maintained steady correspondence with in addition to his visits.

his father's death was still a shock to theon's system. he had thought that his father would have many more years left, during which father and son could work together, but now the north was his alone. grief was strong for many moons, though he hid it extremely well, not wanting the north to doubt his capabilities. the new ruling lord possessed a quiet confidence, visible but not boastful, that he was prepared to govern the land that he held dear. no matter what challenges he or the northern people faced, he would ensure that the north remained strong, no matter the cost. three years into his rule, he has remained a pillar of strength for his people despite the trails that befell the realm.

headcanons.

theon is very tall, standing at six feet and four inches, but he's more lean than overly muscular, allowing him to maintain the agility he's known for particularly when fighting but also when out exploring the woods and hunting.

he is an exceptional fighter. the art of war was a large component of his studies and undoubtedly theon's favorite, second only to actually holding a sword in his hand. he wields his father's old sword as the patriarch carries the stark greatsword, which was gifted to him after he successfully completed his training and proved himself as a fighter.

doesn't like remaining inside for long periods of time. he will often venture into the wolfswood to go riding or hunting, or if he must stay closer to home, to the godswood or training yard simply to breathe in fresh air. the cold seemingly has little effect on him; a fact that has caused worry when he would remain outside seemingly unbothered even as snow falls.

he has an extremely close connection to the old gods. he visits the godswood at least once a day to pray and also think.

some might assume him to be a cold man due to his aloof and guarded nature, but theon does feel very deeply. there's a softness about him shown to only a select few as he is extremely selective about who he allows into his inner circle, preferring to keep most at an arm's length. however, when someone does earn his trust and friendship they will find a friend who will stand at their side through thick and thin. once his trust is lost, however, it's near impossible for it to be regained. he is of the north, and the north remembers.

fiercely loyal. first and foremost to his family but also the north. if the winds were to change, he would do whatever he must in order to defend the north and its people. he will always put his family and the north first.

does not like the south or the vast majority of southerners - though does have a better view of the vale and riverlands. theon finds the climate is too warm, the events too fanciful, and the people too fake and manipulative. he never enjoys having to travel south ( unless it's solely to see rhaeys and not for a court event ) but swallows his distaste for the sake of his duty. it doesn't stop him from being grumpy and more stoic than normal when in the south.

while he doesn't care for the targaryens minus rhaeys, theon, like his father before him, currently holds the belief that as long as the royals mostly leaves the north be - as they have - then he's content under their rule. however, if the crown's treatment of the north were to change, then his opinion would as well. but for now, his thoughts of the crown only warm the closer rhaeys is to wearing the crown himself, having full faith in his dearest friend but also not blind to the potential benefits for the north by being close to the king's side.

theon loves writing, finding it easier to express his thoughts and emotions on paper than with spoken words. it's why he enjoys writing letters. he has also written journals for many, many years. they all remain safely hidden within his room, entirely unseen by and unmentioned to anyone. additionally he has penned a few stories that he's secretly had published under a false name so they could circulate throughout the north and further south without anyone realizing they were written by him.

Deadpool's voice and its media portrayals

I read this post by @jhirowolf and @spider-mand, which inspired me to make my own post specifically about dp's voice - please read the og post first!

In the comics it's known that Deadpool has a unique voice - his speech boxes are yellow while everyone elses' are white. What makes it unique is its quality (it's described as rough, raspy and gravelly) but I also think that it's its cadence too (i'll get in to this below). Unfortunately, Ryan's voice in the movies doesn't really come close to this - for multiple reasons.

Ryan's voice physically is very smooth and also pretty high but I get the sense that as dp, he doesnt really do much for his voice, he is pretty much just himself and cracking jokes. As @jhirowolf pointed out, he kind of has this smooth, sarcastic tone. For me the vibe is that of a stereotypical side-character who mumbles sarcastic comments at whatever the other characters are doing. Ryan's voice is often mellow, calm and even

I dont have concrete examples right now, but in the comics SO many characters call Wade insane mere minutes upon meeting him, despite the fact that they dont know anything about him apart from the fact that he is a mercenary.

Why? Because of his voice!

Immediately upon hearing him talk they conclude he is unhinged and unstable and generally unwell. He's loud, aggressive, speaks a mile a minute and on top of that makes dark jokes serious situations that no one else laughs at. It freaks people out and rightfully so! Adding on to this, I think he varies his pitch and rhythm frequently, further making him appear unstable because his voice is never even or monotone for more than a few seconds. I'm basing this on the fact that his speech bubbles are so much bigger than everyone else's (he talks a lot) and also bc he varies his facial expressions and body language a lot when he speaks.

@jhirowolf mentions that Denis Leary was the inspiration for his voice, which i had no idea about but looking at this video, I think his cadence is perfect. You feel that unlimited energy, the loudness, the unpredictableness, his voice and the look behind his eyes make him seem manic and frantic - which it should! It puts people on edge around him, gives him his reputation of being unpredictable and also makes him regard him as insane. Wade doesnt give a shit about norms for socializing, how loud or crass he is - hes got shit to say and hes gonna say it, no matter how much it may annoy, offend or make others uncomfortable

Nolan's voice, on the other hand, isn't perfect either bc it kind of has the similar smooth quality as ryans, its not gravelly, raspy or anything. But his cadence is soo good! He's calm one minute but you never know when he's gonna snap and lose his shit, i love it

And yeah, Nolan's performance and the funny moments are the only good thing to come out of this game (well i guess another positive is that it made him more popular, it certainly was one of my first encounters which made me interested in him). The bad thing is the amount of damage it did to the complexity of dp's character - they stripped away his layers, the serious and tragic parts that make up who he is, instead of this they literally gave him 1 trait - insane. And that was it. I blame Way's 2008 run for this bc he essentially did the same thing - but the game turned it up to 11. Way at least included several serious and earnest moments where Wade was forced to be introspective and face his issues

This one is used when someone answers a question you asked in a nonsensical way or just in general when someone has said something foolish or nonsensical. you can read about the origin in Danish here.

det kan ske, det kniver med gaflerne – it may spoon it knives with the forks / it happens that the forks are in short supply

Not used in any specific situation other than when someone says det kan ske 'it happens', because ske 'spoon' and ske 'happen' just so happen to be homonyms. Additionally kniv 'knife' and knibe 'be in short supply' are almost homophonous, especially if kniv was a verb.

fra folk og fulde børn skal man høre sandheden – from people and drunk children you will hear the truth

This is not actually the saying, it's supposed to be børn og fulde folk, but it's more fun like this. Originally, this refers to the fact that neither children, nor the drunk tend to think too hard before speaking, thus they tend to tell the truth.

det haster ikke mere end det jager – it's no more urgent than urgency

Excuse my creative liberties here, as both haste and jage mean 'be urgent'. It is more or less synonymous with "take it easy, no rush" – a sort of Danish hakuna matata.

To me, as someone from Western Jutland, jager should always be pronounced jawer ['ja.wʌ] in this saying.

stå med håret i postkassen – to have gotten one's hair stuck inside the mailbox

A metaphor for when you are in some sort of trouble or problematic situation where you feel like you have no power to change your unlucky situation. Often used when you are disappointed as a result of being cheated somehow.

det kan noget – it does something

My best approximation of an English version is "it's got a certain je ne sais quois", because that's literally what it means. It does something for you, specifically, but you're not entirely sure what exactly it is that it does – but it works!

Exactly what it says on the tin. Its English cousin is "you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs".

Yes, this is as vulgar as it sounds. This one is used last in lists of things that are excessive, e.g, vi skulle støvsuge, slå græs, fjerne spindelvæv, dampe gulvtæppet og Fanden og hans pumpestok 'we had to vacuum, mow the lawn, remove cobwebs, steam the carpet and God knows what else'.

Honourable mention for this one that I learnt while looking stuff up in the dictionary:

I am happy and a little nervous to start here. English is not something I master, so please let's go slowly. If you don't understand something, you can ask before anything.

I have a lot to say and I hope to gather more friends than anything else. I am open to dialogue but I repeat, insulting is not an argument and you leave. I don't deny that at first I didn't see something between them; because I was more distracted by the action of the series and the euphoria. But my opinion completely changed in the season 3 finale.

When I saw how Grogu protected his father and in that process, I included Bo (and I'm not saying that he saw her as a mother but he saw the need to protect her, feeling her closer and part of him) So I change my perspective to this season.

I had to rewatch the series several times, hahaha I'm not lying and it makes me laugh but I did it. Then I started to see those little details between Din and Bo katan. Certain parallels and how hatred came to be appreciated. Since there were signs of flirting, he added verbal and body language, non-verbal language, approaches and even the dialogues, the music. Would you be in the mood to do a quick hc of what it would be like to romance Kiara? Like what kind of person would you have to be to catch her eye? If you're bad at learning languages would that be a turn off of hers? I just didn't understand what she saw in Drake lol it felt so random when they wrote that in lol

Hello, @masked-alien-lesbian! Thank you so much for another lovely Kiara ask - I love talking about her, Hana and Liam xD

So! HC's on Kiara as a love interest? I'm game!! 😃 (It's going to be long tho...I am incapable of writing anything quick sorry!! 🙈)

So I had my own thoughts, but I also often discuss Kiara (and our other common fave characters) with a group of close friends (thank you so much for the additional inputs, @cassiopeiacorvus, @thecapturedafrique and @mand-delemonde! 🤗🤗🤗). I found that we agreed on several things when it came to writing Kiara romantically, and the kind of person we liked to pair her with. These things I found the most important:

A Respect for Diplomacy.

I feel like even if they don't show an inclination, it's alright as long as they do not look down on the value of diplomacy and diplomatic relations.

I can see her even with someone who may be militaristic in their approach, as long as they value diplomacy. Having someone who is their opposite in approach can be beneficial as a match as that allows for different perspectives but there should be a healthy respect from both sides.

An Enthusiasm for Learning.

I feel like they don't need to even be the most knowledgeable person in the room, but there should be a willingness to be open to different perspectives. Kiara is herself someone who likes to learn new things and educate herself. I feel like she would want someone who shows that kind of energy and respects her love for her pursuits as well.

An Appreciation for Different Cultures.

I can see her with someone who likes travel, loves to explore different cultures, and yes - would like to learn languages. I don't think they need to be polyglots like her and her family, but someone she can talk about nuances of language with who would find joy in those discussions, and not look at it as some weird interest, or look down on her for it, or doubt her proficiency (Madeleine, the MC and Maxwell do this at least once each in the original series).

From what I've seen in canon, she has never shown any disdain for people who don't know French as well as she does (eg. In Lythikos in TRR1, she is only offended when you ask her to sleep with you in French). People in fandom have called her a snob for this skill, and the MC in TRR3 was allowed to do the same...but tbh she doesn't show any snobbery through this skill or when other people aren't as good at it. So I can definitely see her happier with someone who is willing to explore different cultures with respect and enthusiasm, than someone who doesn't care or looks upon these pursuits with disdain.

Physicality

So this section, and the next, is where I get into what the narrative has to say about Kiara's feelings for Drake. The first time we get a hint of that is when Kiara gets flustered seeing Drake shirtless in TRR2 Ch3 during the barn raising (if you choose to partner with Drake). She also pays attention to the fit of his suit, as you can see in TRR3 Ch 7 when a single Drake comes with the group to her province. In TRH, she talks of liking more rugged, down-to-earth men if the MC is married to Drake. So at least in terms of men that's what canon claims she may like, but that can always change!

In terms of women...canon doesn't say much about her sexuality either way (except that she initially seems shocked during Savannah's bachelorette if you ask her to play bed-wed-dead with female options, but she does proceed then to pick options! Olivia to sleep with, Penelope to marry). So anything is game!! In my personal headcanon (and I mention this in a story of mine titled "The Perfect Gift") that she is "woefully specific" in the kind of man she wants, but finds herself attracted to a wide range of women. So physicality and personality wise I can see her with a wide range of women, ranging from very masculine presenting to ultra feminine presenting femmes.

Loyalty to Friends and Family.

I have begun to realize that very often fandom tends to limit Kiara's feelings for Drake to just the previous point, and assumes that canonically all she feels for him is just plain lust. I feel this ignores something Kiara herself tells us in TRR2 Ch4, during the garden party. There, Kiara tells us that her fondness for Drake began when they were younger - seeing his loyalty and dedication to his friend Liam.

Kiara herself is affectionate in her own way towards her friends and family, though she also employs "tough love". Very often she guides and defends Penelope and Zeke, even though they sometimes frustrate her. She also is from a family that shows an abundance of love and care for each other, and I would think she would appreciate a spouse who would appreciate and value her family as well. So yes, I can see her highly valuing loyalty and filial relationships, especially healthy balanced filial relationships. I cannot see her with someone who would view the people she loves and values with disdain.

And while Kiara herself may not require this as a character, I would like to see the people around her show the same loyalty and love towards her as well. Unfortunately in canon, even Penelope and Ezekiel - her own best friend and brother - don't give back the same energy that she gives out for them. So my hc always is that the person she is with gels well with her family and friends, but also gives her the attention and focus and care she deserves.

In terms of turn offs for Kiara, a big turn-off I can see for her based on canon would be people overstepping their boundaries, or showing ostentatious behaviour designed to show off their power. She initially allies with both Olivia and Madeleine and different points in the series, but shows visible frustration when they get drunk on their own power and abuse their position. I can see this play out even more intensely in a romantic situation. Kiara won't suffer fools or people who play too many games.

I don't think not knowing languages would be a turn off, but not showing a basic interest or at least a healthy respect, for her interests will. I cannot see her staying with a person who looks down on learning languages, or cultural diversity, for too long. I feel like she needs to be happy talking to her partner and engaging them in conversation, and you can't have that with someone who may look down on your passions.

Now to get to the point about Drake! In some ways I'm kind of okay with the randomness of it - after all, the team was on a bit of a "pair the spares" spree in TRR2, where every LI got an alternative LI (TRR was somewhat unique in this respect - very often alternatives would be given only to whichever LI the team deemed the least popular). Clearly the only alternative LI they had planned somewhat was Olivia and Liam, so of course Driara (and Maxwell x Penelope, which was introduced in TRR2 Ch 6, and didn't last very long) would feel a little random.

However, given Kiara is a very practical woman in canon itself...one could still figure out a way to make such a scenario fit with her character. I could always headcanon that she couldn't show any indication of her feelings in the social season where she was a competitor, and it would make sense! And now that the competition is over and the Prince made his final choice, she could feel free to pursue or at least interact with the man she really liked.

Back when I shipped Drake and Kiara, I thought there could be potential in terms of an opposites-attract scenario. I liked the idea of Kiara nursing a secret fondness for earthy, rugged men, as well as the possibility of Drake realizing that not all nobles were evil through someone like Kiara. And there were some scenes at least in TRR2 where Drake seemed like he could view her differently (and be a total weirdo about it) like the option in the prank scene, where he could leave a cute note to her.

Had the narrative actually cared about Kiara, and viewed Drake as someone who needed to grow from his own prejudices, I believe there was a possibility for a good relationship there.

Unfortunately the narrative dislikes proving Drake wrong, and doesn't mind throwing Kiara under the bus...which was why, when Drake stans spewed their racist vitriol all over Kiara during TRR3, the end result we got in TRR3 (where they "confirmed" how much Drake disliked Kiara) was equally racist. That is ultimately why I would never, ever go for Driara...but there was some potential if Drake showed any interest in growing and evolving beyond his puny mindset.

Above all to me, I need the person I pair Kiara up with, to center her as much in their relationship as she would them. Which is why Drake is not even worth considering as a partner for her, IMO...and why I wouldn't go for Penelope either even though she and Kiara are a popular fandom pair. Kiara's friendship with Penelope centers too much around her, and Penelope (in canon especially) brings none of that energy when Kiara would most need it.

To sum it up? I feel like personality wise I wouldn't mind someone who could balance out her practicality and rational bent of mind with a more emotional approach, and someone who would take pride and joy in her interests and achievements. Someone she can have fun talking to, and someone who would fiercely protect and defend her as much as she would do so for them. (In my universe, that's basically Hana 😄)
