Glimpse Into An Alternate Journey
@myusernameisstolen
Jade is very glad she did as that suspicious note suggested, and chose to shrink down the ship and drag John through the portal to the meteor.  It means they get to travel together, all ten of them (not counting the many carapacians and consorts on the shrunken-down planets) and they aren’t separated by any vast cosmic distances, are able to speak and hug and eat together every day. John gets to hang out with Dave and Karkat, and Jade has gone from having next to nobody to being... surrounded by like, so many people.  Just. All the people left in the universe, literally. It’s overwhelming and so rewarding and Jesus she didn’t realize ‘touch starvation’ was a thing, or that it was something she could have , but apparently it is, and she does! And now she has about half a dozen people willing to give her hugs at any time, with varying amounts of complaining on Karkat’s part. And people used to call her island a paradise!  There’s almost too many people here, it feels like! Sometimes. Haha.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
March 6, 2025
Heather Cox Richardson
Mar 07, 2025
This morning, Ted Hesson and Kristina Cooke of Reuters reported that the Trump administration is preparing to deport the 240,000 Ukrainians who fled Russia’s attacks on Ukraine and have temporary legal status in the United States. Foreign affairs journalist Olga Nesterova reminded Americans that “these people had to be completely financially independent, pay tax, pay all fees (around $2K) and have an affidavit from an American person to even come here.”
“This has nothing to do with strategic necessity or geopolitics,” Russia specialist Tom Nichols posted. “This is just cruelty to show [Russian president Vladimir] Putin he has a new American ally.”
The Trump administration’s turn away from traditional European alliances and toward Russia will have profound effects on U.S. standing in the world. Edward Wong and Mark Mazzetti reported in the New York Times today that senior officials in the State Department are making plans to close a dozen consulates, mostly in Western Europe, including consulates in Florence, Italy; Strasbourg, France; Hamburg, Germany; and Ponta Delgada, Portugal, as well as a consulate in Brazil and another in Turkey.
In late February, Nahal Toosi reported in Politico that President Donald Trump wants to “radically shrink” the State Department and to change its mission from diplomacy and soft power initiatives that advance democracy and human rights to focusing on transactional agreements with other governments and promoting foreign investment in the U.S.
Elon Musk and the “Department of Government Efficiency” have taken on the process of cutting the State Department budget by as much as 20%, and cutting at least some of the department’s 80,000 employees. As part of that project, DOGE’s Edward Coristine, known publicly as “Big Balls,” is embedded at the State Department.
As the U.S. retreats from its engagement with the world, China has been working to forge greater ties. China now has more global diplomatic posts than the U.S. and plays a stronger role in international organizations. Already in 2025, about 700 employees, including 450 career diplomats, have resigned from the State Department, a number that normally would reflect a year’s resignations.
Shutting embassies will hamper not just the process of fostering goodwill, but also U.S. intelligence, as embassies house officers who monitor terrorism, infectious disease, trade, commerce, militaries, and government, including those from the intelligence community. U.S. intelligence has always been formidable, but the administration appears to be weakening it.
As predicted, Trump’s turn of the U.S. toward Russia also means that allies are concerned he or members of his administration will share classified intelligence with Russia, thus exposing the identities of their operatives. They are considering new protocols for sharing information with the United States. The Five Eyes alliance between Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the U.S. has been formidable since World War II and has been key to countering first the Soviet Union and then Russia. Allied governments are now considering withholding information about sources or analyses from the U.S.
Their concern is likely heightened by the return to Trump’s personal possession of the boxes of documents containing classified information the FBI recovered in August 2022 from Mar-a-Lago. Trump took those boxes back from the Department of Justice and flew them back to Mar-a-Lago on February 28.
A CBS News/YouGov poll from February 26–28 showed that only 4% of the American people sided with Russia in its ongoing war with Ukraine.
The unpopularity of the new administration's policies is starting to show. National Republican Congressional Committee chair Richard Hudson (R-NC) told House Republicans on Tuesday to stop holding town halls after several such events have turned raucous as attendees complained about the course of the Trump administration. Trump has blamed paid “troublemakers” for the agitation, and claimed the disruptions are part of the Democrats’ “game.” “[B]ut just like our big LANDSLIDE ELECTION,” he posted on social media, “it’s not going to work for them!”
More Americans voted for someone other than Trump than voted for him.
Even aside from the angry protests, DOGE is running into trouble. In his speech before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, Trump referred to DOGE and said it “is headed by Elon Musk, who is in the gallery tonight.” In a filing in a lawsuit against DOGE and Musk, the White House declared that Musk is neither in charge of DOGE nor an employee of it. When pressed, the White House claimed on February 26 that the acting administrator of DOGE is staffer Amy Gleason. Immediately after Trump’s statement, the plaintiffs in that case asked permission to add Trump’s statement to their lawsuit.
Musk has claimed to have found billions of dollars of waste or fraud in the government, and Trump and the White House have touted those statements. But their claims to have found massive savings have been full of errors, and most of their claims have been disproved. DOGE has already had to retract five of its seven biggest claims. As for “savings,” the government spent about $710 billion in the first month of Trump’s term, compared with about $630 billion during the same timeframe last year.
Instead of showing great savings, DOGE’s claims reveal just how poorly Musk and his team understand the work of the federal government. After forcing employees out of their positions, they have had to hire back individuals who are, in fact, crucial to the nation, including the people guarding the U.S. nuclear stockpile. In his Tuesday speech, Trump claimed that the DOGE team had found “$8 million for making mice transgender,” and added: “This is real.”
Except it’s not. The mice in question were not “transgender”; they were “transgenic,” which means they are genetically altered for use in scientific experiments to learn more about human health. For comparison, S.V. Date noted in HuffPost that in just his first month in office, Trump spent about $10.7 million in taxpayer money playing golf.
Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo pointed out today that people reporting on the individual cuts to U.S. scientific and health-related grants are missing the larger picture: “DOGE and Donald Trump are trying to shut down advanced medical research, especially cancer research, in the United States…. They’re shutting down medicine/disease research in the federal government and the government-run and funded ecosystem of funding for most research throughout the United States. It’s not hyperbole. That’s happening.”
Republicans are starting to express some concern about Musk and DOGE. As soon as Trump took office, Musk and his DOGE team took over the Office of Personnel Management, and by February 14 they had begun a massive purge of federal workers. As protests of the cuts began, Trump urged Musk on February 22 to be “more aggressive” in cutting the government, prompting Musk to demand that all federal employees explain what they had accomplished in the past week under threat of firing. That request sparked a struggle in the executive branch as cabinet officers told the employees in their departments to ignore Musk. Then, on February 27, U.S. District Judge William Alsup found that the firings were likely illegal and temporarily halted them.
On Tuesday, Senate majority leader John Thune (R-SD) weighed in on the conflict when he told CNN that the power to hire and fire employees properly belongs to Cabinet secretaries.
Yesterday, Musk met with Republican— but no Democratic— members of Congress. Senators reportedly asked Musk—an unelected bureaucrat whose actions are likely illegal—to tell them more about what’s going on. According to Liz Goodwin, Marianna Sotomayor, and Theodoric Meyer of the Washington Post, Musk gave some of the senators his phone number and said he wanted to set up a direct line for them when they have questions, allowing them to get a near-instant response to their concerns.” Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told reporters that Musk told the senators he would “create a system where members of Congress can call some central group” to get cuts they dislike reversed.
This whole exchange is bonkers. The Constitution gives Congress alone the power to make appropriations and pass the laws that decide how money is spent. Josh Marshall asks: “How on earth are we in this position where members of Congress, the ones who write the budget, appropriate and assign the money, now have to go hat in hand to beg for changes or even information from the guy who actually seems to be running the government?”
Later, Musk met with House Republicans and offered to set up a similar way for the members of the House Oversight DOGE Subcommittee to reach him. When representatives complained about the random cuts that were so upsetting constituents. Musk defended DOGE’s mistakes by saying that he “can’t bat a thousand all the time.”
This morning, U.S. District Judge John McConnell Jr. ruled in favor of a group of state attorneys general from 22 Democratic states and the District of Columbia, saying that Trump does not have the authority to freeze funding appropriated by Congress. McConnell wrote that the spending freeze "fundamentally undermines the distinct constitutional roles of each branch of our government." As Joyce White Vance explained in Civil Discourse, McConnell issued a preliminary injunction that will stay in place until the case, called New York v. Trump, works its way through the courts. The injunction applies only in the states that sued, though, leaving Republican-dominated states out in the cold.
Today, Trump convened his cabinet and, with Musk present, told the secretaries that they, and not Musk, are in charge of their departments. Dasha Burns and Kyle Cheney of Politico reported that Trump told the secretaries that Musk only has the power to make recommendations, not to make staffing or policy decisions.
Trump is also apparently feeling pressure over his tariffs of 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico and an additional 10% on imports from China that went into effect on Tuesday, which economists warned would create inflation and cut economic growth. Today, Trump first said he would exempt car and truck parts from the tariffs, then expanded exemptions to include goods covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA) Trump signed in his first term. Administration officials say other tariffs will go into effect at different times in the future.
The stock market has dropped dramatically over the past three days owing to both the tariffs and the uncertainty over their implementation. But Trump denied his abrupt change had anything to do with the stock market.
“I’m not even looking at the market,” Trump said, “because long term, the United States will be very strong with what’s happening.”

Stan - A term coined popularly by Eminem from his titular song; the song features a fan deeply devoted to Eminem and goes to great lengths to get his attention. The word has popularly taken over a different meaning, good and bad.
I know the focus a lot of us have for the last episode was to emphasize fan culture but I think there is another aspect of the ep and show we aren't speaking on enough. Who is that you might ask? This diabolical bitch and who she ultimately represents in the real world (also, shout out to Namfon because they are playing the roll well and making me absolutely hate their face, lol).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have conversations about Jun, PepperGam,ThamePo, fan culture, ghost ships, and more but we need to discuss the proprietor of it all, Pemika. She, in my opinion, and all her real life counter parts are why stan culture is the way it is. I want to be very clear that as much as people point fingers at idol culture in Asia (which has roots in xenophobia) , this is a worldwide issue. Western artists have the same "crazy" fans and crappy CEO's. The difference is just the structure of the industries, not the actual issues. In the case of ThamePo, Pemika and the industry are the real issues. It's in the very fabric of celebrity culture that you aren't selling music, you are selling yourself. Ideally, the market targets young girls as the biggest buyers in the market for a couple reasons. 1. Young girls historically have gone through "boyband phases" 2. Young people are more likely to spend money on things without much thought (i.e. their parents money or part time job money) 3. Young girls are told to believe in love, marriage, and children. This is of course, not saying boys and non-cis gendered people do not meet these parameters. But, the emphasis being on young girls is basked in sexism but that is a conversation for another day. Just wanted to be clear that I know fandoms aren't just straight girls.
That being said, an aspect you need to make your idols/artists likeable, is to appeal to that demographic. So what does that look like? Giving young girls the "perfect" boyfriend. You, as the company, set up an image that this boy/s is the perfect heartthrob-the ideal boyfriend you want. You paint a picture that they are all "for you" that everything they do is for their fans and their dreams; and as a kid/teen, your dreams tend to be the heart of everything you do. But with that comes unrealistic expectations to meet. Said idol/artist can't date because then the illusion of them being the perfect boyfriend falls. It's given to the world like it's your crush you've liked for so long getting a girlfriend. In those instances what do we feel? Jealousy, hate, dislike, heartbreak, etc. We tend to want to get over that person, throw away the crush as if it never happened.
Now, obviously every fan is not like this and plenty have healthy parasocial relationships with celebrities. But that's not the point the show is trying to make. The beginning of fan culture doesn't begin with fans, it begins with what we are given to "enjoy". Of course, this doesn't mean that you as a fan don't enjoy the artist work, but the companies tend to focus entirely on image rather than music/art. This is not a new sensation no matter how much the media wants to make Kpop fans seem like the epitome of "crazy fans". Nick Carters wife has candidly spoken of being harassed online and in person about dating/marrying him. This sensation doesn't date to the rise of idols in the western world or with the likes of Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift fandoms. It doesn't even start with the beginning of giving fandoms names, it has always begun with the industry and those running it. I hope we as a society grow to be better at this because there is no reason we should live in 2025 and people are afraid their s/o's are going to be harassed or hated. I stand by my assessment that the only way MARS can be happy is if they find a way to pay back their debt and leave this company. There is no way around Pemika's view on the industry. They absolutely need to leave but who knows the direction the show will take at this point.
I think we need to also acknowledge that there are layers to this. It's not just a show; it's disparaging ex boyfriend's of Taylor Swift, it's standing outside celebrity homes waiting for them to come out, it's believing you are entitled to their personal lives because, "they knew what they were getting into". A lot of people are outraged by Fern this past episode, but maybe ask yourself, are you outraged because you believe it's wrong, or because it's your faves in fiction? Ask yourself what part you may play in progression of the downsides of stan culture.
a/n: Anyway, I am sure someone is going to find fault in this because people love to argue but let it be known, I ain't arguing on tumblr. Argue with your mama.

Sharks Foundation 30th anniversary
Artyom Levshunov
Will Smith (+ Patty Marleau comp)
[Transcript below the cut]
Sharks Foundation 30th anniversary segment:
ALAN HOSHIDA: [Welcome] back; eight game home stand continues, looking for their first win... The Tank [SAP Center] was a happenin' place last time out—someone check on Sharkie. I heard some things happened. What will we see in the stands tonight, and on the ice? Let's get to our Remenda Rush and bring in Drew Remenda, and tonight we're celebrating the Sharks Foundation—30 years of impact. What have you seen from this foundation over your time here with the Sharks?
DREW REMENDA: Well, one, what you just said, the impact that they've made within the community. But how it started to where it is now—how they've grown, and how the, the reach out to the community has expanded to so many different things. I remember when their first couple of things that we ever did, the first of get-togethers, you know, broadcasters or coaches got in, and the players on some very small events, and then it just keeps expanding and expanding—that's because the incredible hard work that the Sharks Foundation does. The people themselves, here, in our building, that work for the San Jose Sharks, have grown that to be... fantastic. Because it has been fantastic for everybody that they touch.
(Long pause.)
HOSHIDA: (crosstalk) Keep on going, now that—
REMENDA: (crosstalk) I guess I'll keep talking, 'cause I— (indistinct)
(Both break out into laughter.)
REMENDA: (crosstalk) Hey that pregnant—
HOSHIDA: (crosstalk) We're all together on this.
REMENDA: You know what, exactly, that pregnant pause sometimes can be uncomfortable—which it just was! Alright, here's some of the guys we're looking at today—(both start giggling again) You guys... (regaining his composure)
(Commentary for the rest of the Remenda Rush is from Drew.)
Artyom Levshunov segment:
Playing in his second game in the National Hockey League—Hockey League, Artyom Levshunov. Levshunov was the second pick behind Macklin Celebrini. He played his first game last game against the Colorado Avalanche, and it was a 3–nothing loss, but in this game you saw some of the things that Levshunov has.
Number one, 6'2 but very explosive, outstanding skater. His edgework is terrific. He reminds you a lot of Lane Hutson as far as being able to shimmy-shake a defender because his edgework is so good. Very good on the transition, we watched some highlights when he played in (indistinct, probably saying "Michigan"?) and you see him being able to move the puck as well as he does, but he gets up in the play as well. His first two or three steps are really explosive.
And so when you look at the fact with that young man playing—and he had a, as I said, a very good game; he even lost his defense partner in Alec Martinez, but Mart—so he's down to five guys—he didn't, he didn't drop off. He didn't waver even though he'd played more minutes. I think it was like 23 minutes that he played in his first game. Foligno—his... forward, his teammate—said you know what, it was really exciting, he played an awesome game, and it's exciting to watch that skill up in person, so that's one of the guys they're building the future around, the Chicago Blackhawks.
Will Smith segment:
And, I think a guy that sometimes we don't talk about enough is Will Smith. Now, I gotta admit: at the start of the season, when Will Smith just started out, he wasn't what I thought he was going to be. I was expecting just like Macklin Celebrini, really dynamic, really noticeable. But Will was having a little trouble adapting to the NHL game, and I think Jamal will be able to kinda talk about this even better than I can.
But I asked the Sharks management: I asked them about Will, and what they told me was—relax. He did the same thing at Boston College. He started out a little slow, and then he picked up the game, the game slowed down for him, and then he took off and led the nation in points. In the last 20 games now with the San Jose Sharks, he got 18 points and the game has slowed down for him.
I asked Ryan Warsofsky and the coaching staff what they thought, where is his biggest improvement. They said number one, he's hanging onto pucks. And he's making plays now; he's more confident. And you saw that pass he made to Collin Graf for the second goal last game? He, earlier, would've just made that pass right away. Instead, he starts to walk towards the net, holds onto it for a second, draws the defensemen—that opens up Collin Graf for the goal. And the other thing he's doing is moving his feet. He's now skating, and the game, now, has slowed down for him; he's sped his brain up.
The other thing is, Ryan Warsofsky said, he's a smart person, a really smart player. But when you look at Macklin Celebrini, you think "wow, he's so intense, he's so competitive", and you see that. And I watch Will Smith—he reminds me, though, gang—he's got that competitiveness; he's got that fire—but he reminds me of Patty Marleau! How Patty was, had that—he was quiet, he was even-keel, but he still had the fire burning. Again, Jamal, you played with Patty, you know better than me, but I see a lot of Patty Marleau's instincts, and mannerisms, and character, and desire, and competitiveness with Will Smith.
So those are the two guys I'm looking at today, and I think both organizations look and think, "you know what, our future's going to be okay" with those two in the lineup.

Davesprite survives the explosion that took John on the ship, and now he's survived the end of the game. How does he find his place on the new world when there's already a Dave?
Always watching
Jake appreciated the gesture, he really did. But sometimes he missed the privacy he had before Dirk sent him the damn robot. For one, he was pretty sure it watched him sleep.
A sickness by another name (wouldn't be sweet either but with luck, it would at least look much more tame)
A good handful of decades after the events of the last book, Jade Mountain Academy opens its doors yet again to a new generation of dragonets, all of them ready to learn and get a good education... except one. Timekeeper is just trying to survive. Or, what happens when you throw Homestuck characters, the Wings of Fire world, and a high school AU into a blender.

Conduction of Heat in Solids
‘Heat transfer is an area of thermal engineering that focuses on the transport, exchange, and redistribution of thermal energy. The three modes or ways that heat can be transferred have been termed conduction, convection, and radiation.’ Nepeta Leijon has achieved the dream of every mutant lowblood wriggler in Alternia: she has defected the empire and joined Starfleet. She has a Federation citizenship and has successfully avoided imperial culling! It only, you know, came at the expense of never being able to see or talk to her beloved moirail ever again.

"Maybe that’s what it takes to divert a timeline. Just one child to be offered a chance. A chance to prove themselves to the world, that if the world was willing to smile down at them, they would eagerly smile back." Vriska Serket can't save the world, so she saves herself instead. Well, technically a younger version of herself. But sometimes, that's all you need.
Pride and Prejudice and Horses
Jade Harley is super excited to start her very first undergraduate research project! The only problem is, the graduate student whom she's working with is kind of a jerk. No, scratch that, he's definitely a jerk. Will she be able to find common ground with him?
Haunting On The Top Floor
Karkat Vantas' life is changing fast. New home, new landlord, new...ghost? boyfriend? Look, it's complicated. You could always run away from the palace of course, but you're too much of a coward to do that.

Your Hands Protect the Flames
@tehstripe
John Egbert is sitting in front of you. You've experienced this motherfucker die twice now. The first time it was definitely his fault, even if it felt like your fault at the time. Turns out the second time had also been his fault too, even if Jade had thought it was hers. Now he's sitting across the table from you at a cafe on Earth C, taking a looooong sip of a milkshake. You can see his eyes are drifting to the spot you've got your tail wrapped around Jade's wrist. "Sooo. You two are back together?"

A sickness by another name (wouldn't be sweet either but with luck, it would at least look much more tame)
@thoughts-of-a-scoundrel
Timekeeper’s eyes snapped open with a sharp inhale, the darkness around him giving rise to a number of fantastical and increasingly violent scenarios within his mind, before he remembered where he was. The young dragon turned over onto his other side. Jade Mountain Academy had been Timekeeper’s savior, when he’d first arrived. He knew that with all of the scrutiny the school was under, and all of the dragons that lived on campus, Darkstrider would have to be stupid to try and chase him here. And Timekeeper knew that his father was anything but.

Your name is Eridan Ampora. Today is your sixteenth birthday. Normally on your birthdays, Feferi bakes you a cake and you make a dumbfuck wish and blow out candles. Today is different. Today, you are going to make first contact with your soulmate. At least, you think. It depends on if your soulmate’s turned 16 yet also. It’s something that happens to everyone at some point; It all depends on genetics, and thankfully, yours are normal. Well, as normal as genetics can get.

When the Candy timeline crumbles and it becomes obvious there’s nobody who wants her to save them from its fakery, when the adults are too busy tearing themselves apart with accusations from the past to focus on fixing the future… Vriska Serket doesn’t stay around to change anyone’s mind.
