How a Residential Estimating Service Optimizes Aging-in-Place Home Modifications?
Aging-in-place home modifications are increasingly in demand as more people choose to stay in their homes as they age, rather than move to assisted living or nursing facilities. This trend has led to a growing need for specialized services to ensure homes are safe, accessible, and comfortable for seniors. A residential estimating service plays a pivotal role in optimizing these modifications, helping homeowners, contractors, and designers achieve the best results within budgetary constraints.
Understanding Aging-in-Place Modifications
Aging-in-place home modifications focus on making homes safer and more accessible for older adults. These modifications often include installing grab bars, widening doorways, adding ramps, modifying bathrooms, and ensuring homes are free of hazards such as stairs or tripping obstacles. The goal is to create a living environment that supports independence and reduces the risk of injury while maintaining a familiar and comfortable space.
The Role of a Residential Estimating Service
A residential estimating service provides an essential function in aging-in-place modifications by offering detailed cost estimates, scheduling, and resource allocation. The primary way they optimize the process is by providing accurate, realistic, and comprehensive budget plans that address the specific needs of aging homeowners.
Accurate Budgeting: One of the most significant challenges in aging-in-place projects is managing costs. Home modifications, especially when tailored to a senior’s unique needs, can become expensive if not planned carefully. A residential estimating service ensures that all materials, labor, permits, and other expenses are accounted for accurately. This helps avoid unexpected costs that might arise during the project.
Customized Solutions: Aging-in-place modifications are highly individualistic. Each home and homeowner will have unique needs based on mobility challenges, health conditions, and the size of the property. A residential estimating service can evaluate these needs and provide customized solutions. By incorporating specific requirements into the budget and project plan, they ensure that modifications are both functional and affordable.
Maximizing Value: With limited budgets often available for aging-in-place projects, a residential estimating service helps prioritize modifications that will offer the most significant impact for the homeowner. This could include recommending high-quality yet cost-effective materials or suggesting alternatives that maintain safety and accessibility without overextending financial resources.
Project Planning and Scheduling: Home modifications require careful scheduling to minimize disruption to the homeowner. A residential estimating service works with contractors to create a timeline that ensures tasks are completed in an efficient manner. This helps prevent delays, keeps the project within budget, and ensures that the final result meets the homeowner’s expectations.
Vendor and Contractor Coordination: To ensure that aging-in-place modifications are completed on time and within budget, the estimating service coordinates with various contractors and vendors. By leveraging relationships with reliable suppliers and skilled labor, they can secure better pricing and ensure quality workmanship.
Key Benefits for Homeowners
Aging-in-place modifications are an investment in long-term independence and quality of life. By utilizing a residential estimating service, homeowners benefit from:
Transparency: Clear cost breakdowns and project timelines reduce the uncertainty of the modification process.
Peace of Mind: Professional estimators bring expertise and experience, ensuring that the project is handled competently.
Cost Efficiency: The estimating service helps homeowners make smart decisions that keep the project affordable, avoiding overspending on unnecessary modifications.
Safety and Accessibility: Proper planning and design ensure that the modifications enhance the safety, comfort, and usability of the home for years to come.
Conclusion
In the growing field of aging-in-place home modifications, residential estimating services play a critical role in ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standard. With their expertise in cost estimation, project management, and vendor coordination, these services help homeowners achieve a living environment that promotes independence and safety in their later years.

"South African entrepreneur Phumla Makhoba is on a mission to solve the “global south housing crisis.” And she’s doing it by using clothing waste.
Her invention, Texiboard, is a material that combines fibers found in textile waste with lime cement to create a durable, affordable, and circular building material.
The result is a textured, white square, almost tile-like, that is created with recycled materials — not emission-generating wood or concrete.
“It can be used to make furniture, flooring, walls, or even your entire home,” Makhoba said in a video for social media account We Got Earth.
The first iterations of the Texiboard included colorful cotton threads that were compressed together, with multiple attempts to remove cracks and seams and perfect the ratios of size, shape, and material mass.
With her design firm, Studio People, Makhoba has been working since 2022 to perfect the TexiBoard.
Makhoba has since created a solid panel, with shredded textile fiber and natural lime cement fully cured. Finally, it can be formed into a full sheet of building material.
Once realized, the Texiboard will confront the estimated 92 million tons of clothing waste generated around the globe each year. But it will also provide safe and stable housing that Makhoba says only 20% of South Africans can afford.
“Growing up, I saw two worlds: one with polished buildings, and one built from scrap,” she said in a video. “I always wondered, why do some people get homes that last and others get homes that leak?”
Now, the Texiboard design is available as an open-source resource, and Makhoba and her team host in-person workshops for locals living in shacks to learn how to build their own supportive and sustainable housing.
“Just having a roof isn’t enough,” Makhoba said. “A real home should protect you from the weather, work for your daily life, and not fall apart in five years.”
Her approach includes a full theory of change. Right now, Studio People is in the input process, building partnerships and funding to scale their operation. From there, they hope to develop a fully sustainable supply chain to manufacture and sell Texiboards and help build affordable housing for people in need.
Once that dream is realized, Makhoba outlines the tangible output of this work: Economically inclusive waste management, circular building materials, green jobs, and a sustainable housing and manufacturing market.
“Informal settlements can be transformed when we all work together,” she shares on the Studio People website. “Texiboard is the seed of innovation that will create updated trade jobs in the innovative building industry.”
Although the Texiboard is still being completely perfected, the goal is to provide a weather-proof, cost-effective, and circular way to house people by democratizing the act of building.
“Our goal is to create an egalitarian and sustainable urban environment, helping shack dwellers and youth out of poverty,” Studio People shared on LinkedIn.
“We empower the underdog, including people and businesses, to co-create solutions in our fight against the housing crisis, unsustainable building materials, and unemployment — one board at a time.”"

Scientists have developed recyclable solar cells that use only water, eliminating the need for toxic chemicals and potentially addressing a major environmental challenge in the solar industry.
Swedish researchers have developed a method for fully recycling advanced solar cells using only water, potentially addressing a significant environmental challenge as the solar industry continues its rapid expansion.
The new technique could help address concerns about waste from perovskite solar panels, which are more efficient than traditional panels but difficult to recycle.
Solar energy has experienced significant growth in recent years, with the global market expanding at a rate of around 24% annually over the past decade. This growth is expected to continue, with industry estimates suggesting the market will triple in size by 2028.
Part of this expansion will come from newer perovskite solar cells, which can convert up to 25% of solar energy into electricity. Traditional silicon-based cells typically achieve an efficiency of only 15-20%.
However, these high-performing perovskite cells have presented a significant recycling challenge. Until now, breaking them down required toxic chemicals that could harm the environment.
Researchers from Linköping University in Sweden have published findings in the journal Nature that could change this situation. They’ve developed a water-based method that completely breaks down perovskite solar cells without using harmful chemicals.
“We can recycle everything—covering glasses, electrodes, perovskite layers, and also the charge transport layer,” said Xun Xiao, a postdoctoral student and co-author of the research.
Tumblr media
Professor Feng Gao, another paper co-author, emphasized the importance of considering recycling from the start: “If we don’t know how to recycle them, maybe we shouldn’t put them on the market at all.”
Instead of toxic chemicals, the researchers created a water-based solution containing three additives: sodium acetate, sodium iodide, and hypophosphorous acid.
Each ingredient serves a specific purpose in the recycling process. Sodium acetate helps separate the cell’s materials, while sodium iodide helps reform the perovskite crystals so they can be reused in new solar cells. Hypophosphorous acid keeps the solution stable.
The process involves heating water to 80 degrees Celsius (176 degrees Fahrenheit) for 20 minutes before submerging the solar cell. After the cell breaks down, the team separates the recycled perovskite crystals using a centrifuge spinning at 5,000 rotations per minute for three minutes.
The most impressive aspect of this breakthrough is that solar cells made from these recycled materials maintain the same efficiency as the original cells. This means manufacturers could potentially reuse the same materials multiple times without losing performance.
This development addresses a key sustainability concern in the solar manufacturing industry. While solar power itself produces clean energy, the production of solar panels requires the mining of critical minerals from around the world. These materials are often difficult to source and have their own environmental impact.
The ability to recycle these materials multiple times could reduce the need for new mining operations and lower the overall environmental footprint of solar energy.
The creation of fully recyclable solar cells could also help bring down solar energy prices in the long term. By reusing expensive materials instead of constantly mining new ones, manufacturers might reduce production costs, making solar power even more competitive with fossil fuels.
Currently, the solar industry faces significant recycling challenges. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, only about 10% of solar panels worldwide are recycled properly. The vast majority end up in landfills where their valuable and sometimes toxic materials can’t be recovered.
By 2050, experts predict that solar panel waste could reach 78 million tons globally. This makes the development of recyclable solar cells increasingly urgent from both environmental and economic perspectives.
The cost difference between traditional recycling methods and this new water-based approach is substantial. While conventional recycling of perovskite solar cells requires expensive chemical solvents and specialized disposal processes that can cost up to $25-30 per panel, early estimates suggest the water-based method could reduce these costs by 60-70%.
Solar panel prices have already dropped significantly in recent years, helping drive the industry’s growth despite political opposition from some quarters. The Trump administration had voiced opposition to solar development, but the industry continued to expand regardless.
Perovskite solar cells represent the next generation of solar technology due to their higher efficiency. They can convert a quarter of the sun’s energy that hits them into usable electricity, significantly better than most panels currently on rooftops around the world.
Their main drawback has been the end-of-life disposal issues. Unlike many other products, solar panels contain specialized materials that need proper handling when they’re no longer useful.
The water-based recycling method developed by the Swedish researchers represents a potential solution to this problem. By making the entire recycling process less toxic and more efficient, they’ve addressed one of the few remaining environmental concerns about solar energy.
The regulatory landscape for solar panel recycling varies widely across the globe. The European Union leads with its Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, which requires manufacturers to take back and recycle solar panels at the end of their life.
In the United States, most states lack specific regulations for solar panel disposal; however, California has classified them as universal waste, requiring special handling. China, the world’s largest solar producer, has recently begun developing national standards for recyclable solar cells and the disposal of solar panels.
If scaled up successfully, this technology could help ensure that the growing solar industry remains truly sustainable throughout the entire lifecycle of its products.
The findings come at a critical time for renewable energy. As more countries and companies commit to reducing carbon emissions, the demand for solar power continues to increase. Ensuring this growth occurs in an environmentally responsible manner is crucial for effectively addressing climate change.
By developing methods to recycle the most advanced solar cells fully, researchers are helping ensure that clean energy solutions don’t create new environmental problems along the way.

The future of innovation and efficiency that many governments and private companies dream of runs into ecological and geopolitical limits. But AI does not rely on raw materials only during the construction of its physical infrastructures; it does so throughout its cycle. For instance, data centres and servers need large amounts of water to cool down. According to a study published in Nature in 2021, Google and Microsoft declared using respectively 15.8 billion and 3.6 billion litres of water. We don’t know if these numbers are trustworthy. As a telling example, Microsoft has been involved in a scandal regarding the water expenditure of one of its data centres in the Netherlands. Whereas the technology company declared to the Dutch authorities that the centre consumed between 12 and 20 million litres, it transpired it was actually consuming 84 million. Meanwhile, in August 2022, Thames Water announced reviewing the water expenditure of data centres in London due to the drought scenario the capital faced that summer. While the average annual cooling system consumption of a small data centre in the US is estimated to be 25 500 000 litres, that of a person in Nigeria is 12 410 litres – 2 000 times less. AI is also energy intensive. The more data to be analysed, the higher the energy consumption. More sophisticated algorithms, which need long computational time, consume even more. For example, it is estimated that training an algorithm to automatically produce text uses 190,000 kWh; that is, 120 times more than the average annual consumption of a household in Europe in 2020. To generate this energy, raw materials such as organic matter, uranium, coal or water, among others, are again needed. Although some of the big tech companies claim that their energy is produced sustainably, the data shows another trend. In 2019, Greenpeace published a report about an Amazon Data Centre in Virginia (USA), which is considered to be one of the most important in Amazon’s global infrastructure. Greenpeace warned against the important growth in energy consumption in the region due to this data centre’s activities. Despite Amazon’s pledge to invest in “green” energy for this data centre, the reality is that its investment in fossil fuels has increased shamelessly. In 2021, data centres were estimated to consume 0.9-1.3% of global electricity demand. Given AI’s high energy consumption and the current energy crisis, the techno-optimistic dreams of governments and Silicon Valley’s companies could be dashed by the high price of energy.

How a Residential Estimating Service Collaborates with Architects and Interior Designers
In the world of home construction and renovation, the collaboration between different professionals is crucial to ensure a successful project. One of the most important collaborations happens between a residential estimating service, architects, and interior designers. Each of these professionals brings unique skills to the table, but when they work together, the result is a seamless, well-managed project that meets both aesthetic and financial goals.
The Role of the Residential Estimating Service
A residential estimating service is responsible for providing accurate cost estimates for a home construction or renovation project. This includes analyzing blueprints, identifying material and labor costs, calculating potential risks, and predicting the overall cost of the project. An estimator’s primary goal is to offer a reliable budget that reflects the true cost of the work involved, from the foundation to the final touches.
However, the estimating service doesn’t work in isolation. It relies heavily on input from architects and interior designers to provide precise figures and avoid unexpected budget overruns.
Initial Collaboration: Understanding the Design Vision
The first stage of collaboration between the estimating service, architect, and interior designer is crucial to ensure that the design vision is accurately reflected in the budget. Architects focus on the structural design and layout of the home, while interior designers concentrate on aesthetics, functionality, and the materials that will give the home its character.
During the early planning stages, the estimator works closely with both professionals to understand the scope of the project. The estimator needs to know the specific materials, finishes, and design features that the architect and designer envision for the home. For example, if the designer specifies high-end finishes like marble countertops or custom cabinetry, the estimator needs to incorporate these into the cost calculations.
Cost Planning: Translating Design Into Budget
Once the design concepts have been established, the estimating service helps translate these ideas into a concrete budget. This is where the collaboration truly takes shape. The estimator uses the detailed plans from the architect and the material specifications from the interior designer to create a comprehensive estimate that includes all the costs for construction and materials.
For example, if the architect’s design includes an open-concept floor plan with expansive windows, the estimator needs to account for the costs of purchasing and installing these larger, custom windows. The interior designer might specify unique flooring or lighting fixtures that need to be considered in the budget as well.
Throughout this phase, the estimator works alongside the architect and designer to adjust the budget if needed. If any of the proposed materials or designs exceed the budget, the estimator suggests alternatives that still align with the overall vision but are more cost-effective.
Adjusting the Estimate as the Design Evolves
Designs often evolve during the construction process. As the project progresses, the architect and interior designer may introduce changes based on unforeseen challenges or new design ideas. The estimating service must be able to quickly adjust the estimate to reflect these changes, ensuring that the budget remains accurate and realistic.
For instance, if the interior designer changes the selection of materials for flooring or wall finishes midway through the project, the estimator will need to update the cost estimates accordingly. This is a crucial aspect of the estimator’s role—keeping the project on track financially despite these design changes.
Ongoing Communication: Preventing Surprises
The key to successful collaboration between the estimating service, architect, and interior designer is clear and continuous communication. The estimating service should stay in regular contact with both the architect and the designer to ensure that all changes, whether structural or aesthetic, are communicated as soon as possible.
This communication also helps to identify potential issues before they become larger problems. For example, if the interior designer requests a feature that is out of budget, the estimator can flag the issue early and suggest alternatives. Similarly, if the architect discovers an issue with the structural design that could lead to cost overruns, the estimator can adjust the budget to accommodate the change.
By maintaining ongoing communication and fostering an open dialogue, the estimating service can ensure that the project remains within budget and on schedule.
Final Cost Reconciliation
Once the project nears completion, the estimating service plays a crucial role in reconciling the final costs. This involves comparing the original budget with the actual costs incurred during construction and identifying any discrepancies. If costs exceeded the initial estimate, the estimating service works with the architect and designer to determine the cause and find ways to avoid such discrepancies in future projects.
This final reconciliation helps the client understand where the project’s budget went and whether there were any areas where costs could have been better managed.
Benefits of Effective Collaboration
When a residential estimating service, architect, and interior designer collaborate effectively, the benefits are clear. The most obvious benefit is that the project stays within budget. This is critical for homeowners who want to ensure that their vision is brought to life without encountering financial difficulties halfway through the renovation or construction process.
Another benefit is that the collaboration ensures that all parties are aligned on the vision for the home. Architects and interior designers can rest assured that their designs will be realized without financial compromise, while the estimating service can ensure that the project stays within the constraints of the budget.
Lastly, effective collaboration helps to avoid misunderstandings and mistakes that can arise when the professionals involved work in isolation. By sharing information openly and continuously throughout the project, the estimating service, architect, and interior designer can work together to address any challenges and create a beautiful home that meets both the client’s needs and financial limitations.
Conclusion
The role of a residential estimating service is pivotal in the construction and renovation process. However, its success depends on effective collaboration with architects and interior designers. By working together from the outset and maintaining clear communication throughout the project, these professionals ensure that the design vision is realized without compromising the budget. The estimator’s role is to bring the design to life financially, while the architect and interior designer ensure that the final result is functional, aesthetically pleasing, and aligned with the homeowner’s goals.
In the world of home construction, teamwork truly makes the dream work.

Green energy is in its heyday.
Renewable energy sources now account for 22% of the nation’s electricity, and solar has skyrocketed eight times over in the last decade. This spring in California, wind, water, and solar power energy sources exceeded expectations, accounting for an average of 61.5 percent of the state's electricity demand across 52 days.
But green energy has a lithium problem. Lithium batteries control more than 90% of the global grid battery storage market.
That’s not just cell phones, laptops, electric toothbrushes, and tools. Scooters, e-bikes, hybrids, and electric vehicles all rely on rechargeable lithium batteries to get going.
Fortunately, this past week, Natron Energy launched its first-ever commercial-scale production of sodium-ion batteries in the U.S.
“Sodium-ion batteries offer a unique alternative to lithium-ion, with higher power, faster recharge, longer lifecycle and a completely safe and stable chemistry,” said Colin Wessells — Natron Founder and Co-CEO — at the kick-off event in Michigan.
The new sodium-ion batteries charge and discharge at rates 10 times faster than lithium-ion, with an estimated lifespan of 50,000 cycles.
Wessells said that using sodium as a primary mineral alternative eliminates industry-wide issues of worker negligence, geopolitical disruption, and the “questionable environmental impacts” inextricably linked to lithium mining.
“The electrification of our economy is dependent on the development and production of new, innovative energy storage solutions,” Wessells said.
Why are sodium batteries a better alternative to lithium?
The birth and death cycle of lithium is shadowed in environmental destruction. The process of extracting lithium pollutes the water, air, and soil, and when it’s eventually discarded, the flammable batteries are prone to bursting into flames and burning out in landfills.
There’s also a human cost. Lithium-ion materials like cobalt and nickel are not only harder to source and procure, but their supply chains are also overwhelmingly attributed to hazardous working conditions and child labor law violations.
Sodium, on the other hand, is estimated to be 1,000 times more abundant in the earth’s crust than lithium.
“Unlike lithium, sodium can be produced from an abundant material: salt,” engineer Casey Crownhart wrote in the MIT Technology Review. “Because the raw ingredients are cheap and widely available, there’s potential for sodium-ion batteries to be significantly less expensive than their lithium-ion counterparts if more companies start making more of them.”
What will these batteries be used for?
Right now, Natron has its focus set on AI models and data storage centers, which consume hefty amounts of energy. In 2023, the MIT Technology Review reported that one AI model can emit more than 626,00 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent.
“We expect our battery solutions will be used to power the explosive growth in data centers used for Artificial Intelligence,” said Wendell Brooks, co-CEO of Natron.
“With the start of commercial-scale production here in Michigan, we are well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for efficient, safe, and reliable battery energy storage.”
The fast-charging energy alternative also has limitless potential on a consumer level, and Natron is eying telecommunications and EV fast-charging once it begins servicing AI data storage centers in June.
On a larger scale, sodium-ion batteries could radically change the manufacturing and production sectors — from housing energy to lower electricity costs in warehouses, to charging backup stations and powering electric vehicles, trucks, forklifts, and so on.
“I founded Natron because we saw climate change as the defining problem of our time,” Wessells said. “We believe batteries have a role to play.”

Sustainability in the Food and Beverage Sector: A Business Take
Sustainability in the food and beverage industry goes beyond a trendy concept—it’s a necessity. It involves ensuring that production, transportation, and sales processes minimize environmental harm while maintaining long-term ecological balance. Businesses that adopt sustainable practices not only contribute to a healthier planet but also build resilience and gain consumer trust.
Read More: https://theenterpriseglobe.com/business/sustainability-in-the-food-and-beverage-sector-a-business-take/
Rethinking the Value Chain
The supply chain offers a significant opportunity to drive meaningful change. Many companies depend on large suppliers who may not prioritize sustainability. Instead, businesses should focus on sourcing from certified suppliers, reducing food miles, and supporting local farmers. Local sourcing not only reduces costs and fosters goodwill but also allows companies to offer fresher products to their customers.
Another crucial factor is logistics. Are we optimizing transportation? Are we investing in fuel-efficient or electric vehicles? Such questions can reshape operations, making supply chains smarter and more sustainable.
Reducing Food Waste
Food waste remains a massive challenge. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that nearly one-third of global food production is wasted. Effective demand forecasting and inventory management can prevent overproduction and spoilage. AI-driven analytics can enhance demand prediction, reducing unnecessary waste.
Repurposing excess food is another viable solution. Donating surplus food to charities or converting waste into by-products can make a significant difference. Innovative approaches, such as using fruit peels for packaging materials, demonstrate how businesses can turn waste into valuable resources.
Towards Renewable Energy & Green Operations
A major yet often overlooked issue is the energy consumption of food and beverage companies. Transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar panels, wind turbines, and energy-efficient machinery can drastically cut reliance on fossil fuels. While initial investments may seem steep, the long-term cost savings and environmental benefits are undeniable.
Water conservation is equally important. Implementing water-efficient irrigation methods, recycling water in processing plants, and reducing wastage in production can help preserve this vital resource.
Eco-Friendly Packaging Solutions
The industry’s reliance on single-use plastics is a growing concern. Consumers are demanding more eco-friendly alternatives, pushing businesses to explore biodegradable and recyclable packaging. Edible packaging, made from natural materials, is an innovative solution that reduces waste while maintaining functionality.
However, switching materials isn’t enough. Educating consumers about proper disposal methods through clear labeling and awareness campaigns ensures that recyclable and compostable packaging serves its intended purpose.
Transparency & Authentic Communication
Transparency fosters trust. Consumers want to know where their food comes from and how it is produced. Companies that openly share their sustainability efforts—including sourcing, production methods, and targets—tend to attract loyal customers. Certifications such as Fair Trade, USDA Organic, or Rainforest Alliance add credibility.
However, businesses must avoid greenwashing. Authenticity is key—sharing both successes and challenges helps build genuine connections with consumers and stakeholders.
Collaboration for Greater Impact
Sustainability is not a solo effort. Collaboration between companies, industries, and even competitors can drive significant progress. Joint initiatives can tackle larger issues such as climate change and deforestation, creating shared standards that benefit the entire sector.
Educating Employees & Consumers
Sustainability starts from within. Educating employees on conservation practices—whether through energy-saving initiatives in offices or participating in community clean-ups—creates a culture of responsibility.
Consumers also play a crucial role. Awareness campaigns that promote sustainable consumption, such as reducing meat intake or choosing seasonal produce, can drive behavioral change, influencing demand and encouraging responsible choices.
Monitoring & Measuring Progress
Setting achievable sustainability goals and tracking progress is essential. Businesses that conduct regular sustainability audits can identify areas for improvement and adjust their strategies accordingly. Measuring impact ensures that sustainability efforts remain effective and aligned with broader environmental goals.
Final Thoughts
Sustainability in the food and beverage industry is no longer optional—it’s imperative. Every effort, from rethinking supply chains to educating stakeholders, contributes to a larger movement toward environmental responsibility. The journey may be challenging, but the rewards—both for businesses and the planet—are invaluable. By working together, companies and individuals can build a future where the food and beverage industry nourishes both people and the planet.Source: https://theenterpriseglobe.com/

Excerpt from this Op-Ed from the New York Times:
To keep the lights on, many utility companies are proposing to build dozens of new power plants that burn natural gas. North Carolina-based Duke Energy alone wants to add 8.9 gigawatts of new gas-fired capacity — more than the entire country added in 2023. Using their own projections of soaring energy demands as justification, these companies are also pushing back on the climate targets set by their states and the Biden administration.
If state regulators sign off on these plans, they will be gambling with our country’s future. We need to electrify everything from cars to appliances to slow climate change, but we won’t be able to reach our climate goals if we power all of those machines with dirty energy.
There is a better way. But to get there, legislators will need to overhaul the incentives driving utilities to double down on natural gas, so that they can turn a profit without cooking the planet.
Companies like Duke, Dominion Energy and Georgia Power argue that they need more gas-fired plants to reliably provide power during times of peak demand — for instance, on a hot summer weekday afternoon when home cooling systems and data servers are all humming at maximum output, and the grid strains to keep up. But those peaks tend to materialize only for a few dozen hours per year, and there are ways to deal with them that don’t require a massive amount of new methane-burning infrastructure.
The real reason the utilities want to build these plants is quite simple: The more stuff they build, the more money they make. Regulators let utilities charge their customers enough money to cover what they spend on assets like combustion turbines and wires, plus a generous rate of return (up to 10 percent) for their investors. This longstanding arrangement incentivizes power providers to build expensive things whether society needs them or not, in lieu of lower-cost, cleaner options, and to invoke their duty to keep the lights on as a post hoc rationalization.
Fortunately, utilities have plenty of ways to meet this new need.
They include “virtual power plants” — when technologies such as home batteries, rooftop solar systems, smart water heaters and thermostats are linked together and managed via software to provide the same services as a conventional power plant. Utilities in Vermont, Colorado and Massachusetts are already using them, to quickly respond to rising demand at a much lower cost than operating natural gas combustion turbines. According to one estimate, virtual power plants could lower U.S. utilities’ costs by as much as $35 billion over the next decade.
Utilities could also accelerate efforts to replace outdated transmission lines with newer ones that can carry double the electric current and to bring more battery storage online. They can compensate customers for using less energy during times when demand is high and invest far more in energy efficiency, helping customers to adopt devices that use less electricity.
All of these solutions would save customers money and reduce carbon emissions. They could, according to a Department of Energy analysis, meet the entire projected growth in U.S. peak electricity demand over the next decade.
