Drake leaves after Dinner.

Drake doesn't come come to his door that night because Drake never comes home that night. Andrew doesn't pay it much care secure in his safety with Alex's watchful eyes over him.

Andrew goes to the first day of school. Everyone has forgotten that he's a garbage bag kid and 8th grade isn't that bad.

It's the longest he's gone in months without seeing Alex anad he half expects Alex to be outside the school.

Statistics of Apollo's Lovers

I was wondering just how unfortunate of a love-life our boy Apollo had, so - as one does - I did the research, math, and writing of said love-life.

such is the life of an adhd teen :)

In total, there are 63 people on this list. I have them separated into eight groups; Immortal, Immortal & Rejected, Lived, Died, Rejected & Died, Rejected & Cursed, Rejected & Lived, and who were Rejected by Apollo

Disclaimer: I am not a historian nor an expert in Greek Mythology, I am just a very invested nerd in Mythology, and in Apollo's mythology in general, and got curious about what his rap sheet actually looks like.

Sidenote: There will be some "lovers" not on this list. Reasons being;

No actual literary sources behind them

Said literary sources are dubious at best

Not enough information is given about the nature of their relationship to make an accurate take

So if somebody isn't on this list, it's because of one of those three reasons. Although there is still a chance I missed somebody! :)

Also, no RRverse lovers include in this list. Sorry my fellow ToA fans.

Admetus: mortal king, took great care of Apollo during his second punishment, Apollo wingmanned him for Alcestis's hand - basically Apollo doted on him <3 (Callimachus's Hymn II to Apollo and Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 1.9.15 and Hyginus's Fabulae 50–51, and also written about by Ovid and Servius)

Hecuba: queen of Troy, together they had Troilus.

It was foretold that if Troilus lived to adulthood, Troy wouldn't fall - unfortunately, Achilles murdered Troilus in Apollo's temple. When the Achaeans burned Troy down, Apollo rescued Hecuba and brought her to safety in Lycia. (Stesichorus's Fr.108)

Hyrie/Thyrie: mortal. mothered a son by Apollo. Their son, Cycnus, attempted to kill himself after some shenanigans and his mother attempted the same. Apollo turned them into swans to save their lives. (Antoninus Liberalis's Metamorphoses 12 and Ovid's Metamorphoses 7.350)

Dryope: mortal. had a son named Amphissus with Apollo, who was a snake at the time. Later turned into a lotus flower, but it had nothing to do with Apollo so she's still on this list. (noncon; written by Ovid in Metamorphoses 8 CE/AD and later by Antoninus Liberalis in his own Metamorphoses sometime between 100-300 CE/AD)

Creusa: mortal queen. had a son named Ion with Apollo (Euripides's Ion). Please check out @my-name-is-apollo's post for more details because they make some good points about what's considered "rape" in Ancient Greece. I expand on this further at the end of the post.

Melia: Oceanid nymph. Had a son w/h Apollo named Tenerus. (Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 9.10.5–6)

Melia was said to be kidnapped, and her brother found her with Apollo. He set fire to Apollo's temple in an effort to get her back, but was killed. Melia and Apollo had two kids - but here's the interesting part. Melia was highly worshiped in Thebes, where her brother found her. She was an incredibly important figure in Thebes, especially when connected with Apollo. She and Apollo were essentially the parents of Thebes.

As I read over their story, it sounded like (to me, at least. it's okay if you think otherwise!) that Melia just absconded/eloped with Apollo.

Was kidnapping an equivalent to assault back then? Perhaps. But it's still debated on whenever or not that's true. However, one thing I've noticed reading up on these myths is that when Apollo does do something unsavory, the text says so.

It never says anything about Apollo doing anything to Melia. Her father and brother believe she was kidnapped, but, like mentioned previously, it seems far much more likely that she just ran off with her boyfriend or something.

But that's just my interpretation.

Iapis: a favorite lover. Apollo wanted to teach him prophecy, the lyre, ect. but Iapis just wanted to heal :) so Apollo taught him healing :) (Smith 1873, s.v. Iapis)

Aethusa: daughter of Poseidon & the Pleiad Alcyone. Mother of Linus and Eleuther. She is the great-great grandmother of Orpheus. (Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 3.10.1 and Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 9.20.2 and Suida, s.v. Homer's Of the Origin of Homer and Hesiod and their Contest, Fragment 1.314)

Acacallis: daughter of King Minos. there's a lot of variation on whether or not she had kids with Hermes or Apollo. Some say she had a kid with each. (Stephanus of Byzantium, s.v. Kydōnia (Κυδωνία and Scholia on Apollonius Rhodius, 4.1492)

Chrysothemis: nymph queen who won the oldest contest of the Pythian Games - the singing of a hymn to Apollo. She had three daughters, and one of them is said to be Apollo's. (Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 10.7.2 and Hyginus's De Astronomica 2.25)

Corycia: naiad. had a son with Apollo. the Corycian Cave north of Delphi is named after her (Hyginus's Fabulae 161)

Leuconoe (also Choine or Philonis): daughter of Eosphorus, god of the planet Venus, and mother of the bard Philammon. (Hyginus's Fabulae 161) She was killed by Diana for her hubris.

Melaena (also Thyia or Kelaino): mother of Delphos, member of prophetic Thriae of Delphi. Priestess of Dionysus. (Herodotus's Histories 7.178.1)

Othreis: mothered Phager by Apollo, and later Meliteus by Zeus. (Antoninus Liberalis's Metamorphoses 13)

Stilbe: mother of Lapithus and Aineus by Apollo. (Diodorus Siculus's Library of History 4.69.1 and Scholia on Apollonius Rhodius, 1.40 and Scholia on Apollonius Rhodius, 1.948)

Syllis (possible same as Hyllis, granddaughter of Heracles): mothered Zeuxippus by Apollo. (Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 2.6.7)

Amphissa: Apollo seduced her in the form of a shepherd. They had a son named Agreus. (Ovid's Metamorphoses 6.103 and Hyginus's Fabulae 161)

Areia (or Deione): had a son named Miletus. Hid him in some smilax. Her father found him and named him. (Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 3.1.2)

Arsinoe: she and Apollo had a daughter named Eriopis. (Hesiod's Ehoiai 63 and Scholia ad Pindar's Pythian Ode 3.14)

Queen of Orkhomenos (no name is given): Mother of Trophonius (Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 9.37.5)

(my fellow ToA fans will recognize that name haha).

Hypermnestra: Either Apollo or her husband fathered her son Amphiaraus. (Hyginus's Fabulae 70)

(sidenote: @literallyjusttoa suggested that Apollo was dating both Hypermnestra and Oikles, and I, personally, like that headcannon)

Manto: Daughter of Tiresias. Apollo made her a priestess of Delphi. They had a son named Mopsus. When Apollo sent her to found an oracle elsewhere, he told her to marry the first man she saw outside of Delphi. That man turned out to be Rhacius, who brought her to Claros, where she founded the oracle of Apollo Clarios. (Apollodorus's Bibliotheca E6. 3)

Later, another man named Lampus attempted to assault her, but was killed by Apollo. She is also said to be a priestess who warned Niobe not to insult Leto, and to ask for forgiveness. Niobe did not. (Statius's Thebaid 7 and Ovid's Metamorphoses 6)

(Dante's Inferno places her in the eighth circle of hell, and let me just say- what the FUCK Dante! What did Manto ever do to you, huh??!! Don't do my girl dirty!!)

Parthenope: granddaughter of a river god. Mothered Lycomedes by Apollo (Pausanius's Descriptions of Greece 4.1)

Phthia: prophetess. called "beloved of Apollo". Mother three kings by him; Dorus, Laodocus, & Polypoetes (Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 1.7.6)

Procleia: Mother of Tenes, son of Apollo, who was killed by Achilles before the Trojan War. Daughter of King Laomedon, king of Troy. (Apollodorus's Epitome 3. 26)

Helenus: prince of Troy. Received from Apollo an ivory bow which he used to wound Achilles in the hand. (Photius's 'Bibliotheca excerpts')

Hippolytus of Sicyon: called "beloved of Apollo" in Plutarch's Life of Numa. I don't think this guy is the same as Hippolytus, son of Zeuxippus (son of Apollo), king of Sicyon Pausanias talks about in his Description of Greece. That would be a little weird taking the whole family tree into account - though it's never stopped other gods before. *shrug*

Psamathe: nereid, said to be the personification of the sand of the sea-shore. (Conon's Narrationes 19)

She and Apollo were lovers, but never had any kids. When another man assaulted her, she had a son and abandoned him.

(He was found by some shepherds dw - wait, he was then torn apart by dogs. Nevermind.)

Back to her, her father ordered for her to be executed and Apollo avenged her death by sending a plague onto Argos and refused to stop it until Psamathe and Phocus/Linus (her son) were properly given honors.

(I really like how even though Linus isn't Apollo's kid, and that Psamathe wanted nothing to do with the kid, Apollo still considered him worth avenging too <3 )

Okay, in a previous incarnation of this post, I said there was a version where she is raped by Apollo...however, I can't find any sources to back it up😅 Even her wiki page doesn't mention rape, and Theoi's excerpt of Paunasias's Descriptions of Greece about her doesn't either.

So where did I hear about this supposed version? (Don't shoot)

Hymenaeus: No, not his kid. This is a different Hymenaeus haha! This Hymenaeus is the son of Magnes, and comes from Megalai Ehoiai fr. 16, commonly attributed to Hesiod, and Antonius Liberalis's Metamorphosis. Legend states that while Apollo was preoccupied with Hymenaeus, baby Hermes stole his cows ;)

Euboia: Daughter of Macareus. Bore a son named Agreus. (Hyginus's Fabulae 161)

Philodice: Wife of Leukippos, mothered Phoebe and Hilaera by Apollo (Descriptions of Greece 3.16.1, citing the Kypria).

35 are 100% consensual. Creusa is questionable, depending on who's translating/which tradition you go with. Dryope is noncon.

Lovers Who Died:

Hyacinthus*: mortal prince. we all know this one, right? Right? one and only true love turned into flower (okay that's my bias speaking but AM I WRONG?) (Plutarch's Life of Numa, 4.5; Philostratus the younger's Imagines; Pseudo-Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 1.3.3; Ovid's Metamorphoses 10.162–219; Bion's Poems 11; and various pieces of art)

Cyparissus: mortal. his DEER DIED and he asked Apollo to let him MOURN FOREVER so he was turned into a cypress tree (Ovid's Metamorphoses X 106ff)

Coronis: mortal princess. cheated on Apollo w/h Ischys, who in Fabulae was killed by Zeus. mother of Asclepius. killed by Artemis. (Pindar's Pythian Odes 3.5; Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 2.26.6; Hyginus's Fabulae 202; Ovid's Metamorphoses 2.536 and 2.596; Hyginus's De Astronomica 2.40; Isyllus's Hymn to Asclepius 128.37 ff.)

There is another version of Asclepius's birth given by Pausanias in Descriptions of Greece 2.26.1-7, where Coronis exposes him on a mountain and Apollo takes him in.

Adonis: yes, THAT Adonis. he's in this category because. well. he died. rip (Ptolemy Hephaestion's New History Book 5)

Phorbas: Okay so Apollo's lover Phorbas and another Phorbas sometimes get mashed together so this is what I was able to gather.

Plutarch's Life of Numa 4.5 and Hyginus's De Astronomia 2.14.5 cites Phorbas as Apollo's lover. The other Phorbas is said to be a rival to Apollo in the Homeric Hymn to Apollo. Personally, I separate the two because it makes more sense with Phorbas the lover's overall story.

Here it is: The island of Rhodes fell victim to a plague of dragons or serpents, and the oracle said to summon Phorbas for help. He defeated the infestation, and after he died, Apollo asked Zeus to place him in the stars, and so Phorbas became the constellation Serpentarius, also known more widely as Ophiuchus (a man holding a serpent).

FORGET ORION AND HIS ONE-OFF MENTION OF BEING DIANA'S LOVER HERE IS A CONSTELLATION TRAGIC LOVE STORY!!!!!

(*Hyacinthus was resurrected, as celebrated in the Hyacinthia festival in Sparta. Nonnus's Dionysiaca 19.102 and Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 3.19.4 supports this belief as well.)

Love-Interests Who Rejected & Died:

Daphne: do i nEED to say anything? Nymph. turned into tree to escape.

Daphne and Apollo actually go back a bit. Their story was used to explain why the laurel was so sacred to Apollo. It's in Delphi, Branchus planted laurel trees around the temple he built to Apollo, the laurel was even sacred to Apollo's historical forebearer Apulu, an Etruscan god! (I have sources to back this up :3 along with an Essay.)

Apollo & Daphne first originate from Phylarchus, but we do not have any of his work :( It's been lost to history...a moment of silence RIP. He was a contemporary in the 3rd century BC/BCE (first day of 300 BC/BCE and last day of 201 BC/BCE).

He was, however, cited as a source in Parthenius's Erotica Pathemata, written sometime in the 1 century AD/CE (sometime between 66 BC/BCE and the author's death in 14 AD/CE).

Then they show up again in Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece, written between 150 AD/CE and 170 AD/CE.

Hyginus wrote his Fabulae sometime before Ovid's because it's widely criticized to be his earliest work and Ovid wrote his Metamorphoses in 8 AD/CE.

The first two versions are roughly the same, and Ovid's shares similarities with the first in only the ending. Hyginus is basically like Ovid's but without Eros.

So in publication order, it's; Erotica Pathemata, Fabulae, Metamorphoses, then Descrip. of Greece.

In Erotica Pathemata, Daphne is the daughter of Amyclas and is being courted by Leucippus. She is not interested in any sort of romance. Leucippus disguises himself as a girl to get close to her, but his ruse is revealed when Apollo nudges Daphne and her attendants into taking a bath in the river. Leucippus is consequently killed.

Apollo then becomes interested and Daphne runs away, imploring Zeus that "she might be translated away from mortal sight", and is transformed into the laurel tree.

In Fabulae, Daphne's story is a bit more familiar. She's the daughter of Peneus, the river god, and Gaea is the one who transforms her into a laurel tree.

In Metamorphoses, Eros is added to the story and is the reason why Apollo is so enamored and Daphne is so repulsed.

(I would just like to say that in this version, it was 100% nonconsensual for both of them! And I don't mean with rape- Apollo never touches Daphne in any of these version. What I mean here is that Eros maliciously makes Apollo chase down a woman and makes sure Daphne would be repulsed by him. That is noncon behavior there on both sides.)

In Descriptions of Greece 10.7.8, Daphne is the daughter of Ladon and her and Apollo are only connected by way of why the laurel crown is the victory prize of the Pythian Games. However, in Descriptions of Greece 8.20.2-8.20.4, Daphne and Leucippus make an appearance here too, but Apollo is not the reason why they stop to take a swim and his ruse is revealed, resulting in his death.

Castalia: Nymph. turned into spring to escape.

First things first, Castalia was used to explain the existence of the Castalian Spring in Delphi. However, in the Homeric Hymn to Apollo, the spring is already there when Apollo was born. So there's that to consider first.

Anyway, to escape Apollo's advances, Castalia transforms herself into a spring. (Lactantius Placidus's On Statius's Thebaid 1.698. This was written between Lactantius's lifespan of c. 350 – c. 400 AD/CE, placing it firmly in Roman times.)

Love-Interests Who Rejected & Cursed

Cassandra: mortal princess. Received the gift of prophecy from Apollo. Due to a broken oath, she was then cursed. (Aeschylus's Agamemnon)

It is only in Roman-era tellings where Cassandra is cursed for not sleeping with Apollo, and there was no oath made (Hyginus & Pseudo-Apollodorus). In Agamemnon, it was done so because of the broken oath- not the refusing to sleep with Apollo thing.

The version where she gains prophetic abilities by way of a snake licking her ears is not part of Greco-Roman literature, but rather by an American poet.

Nevertheless, even after the curse Cassandra still loved Apollo, and called him "god most dear to me" in Eurpides's play The Trojan Women.

Love-Interests Who Rejected & Lived

Sinope: mortal. there are two different version of her myth.

In Diodorus Siculus's Library of History 4.72.2 and Corinna's Frag. 654, Apollo "seizes" her and they have a son named Syrus.

In Apollonius's Argonautica  2.946-951 and Valerius Flaccus's Argonautica 5.109, it is Zeus who abducts her, but she gets him to promise her anything and requests to remain a virgin. He obliges. Later, Apollo and the river Halys both try to charm her, but fall for the same trick.

Library of History was written between 60-30 BC/BCE, Apollonius's Argonautica between 300 BC/BCE and 201 BC/BCE, and Valerius Flaccus's Argonautica between 70-96 AD/CE, making Apollonius's version the oldest and Valerius Flaccus's the youngest.

Marpessa: mortal princess, granddaughter of Ares. Idas, son of Poseidon, kidnapped her and Apollo caught up to them. Zeus had Marpessa chose between them, and she chose Idas, reasoning that she would eventually grow old and Apollo would tire of her. (Homer's The Iliad, 9.557 and Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 1.7.8–9)

Bolina: mortal. Apollo approached her and she flung herself off a cliff. He turned her into a nymph to save her life. (Pausanias's Description of Greece 7.23.4)

Ocroe/Okyrrhoe: nymph and daughter of a river god. asked a boatman to take her home after Apollo approached her. Apollo ended up turning the boat to stone and the seafarer into a fish. (Athenaeus's The Deipnosophists 7.283 E [citing The Founding of Naucratis by Apollonius Rhodius]. The Deipnosophists was written in the early 3rd century AD, between 201 AD and 300 AD)

Sibyl of Cumae: mortal seer. promised to date Apollo if she was given longevity as long as the amount of sand in her hand. he did, but she refused him. (Ovid's Metamorphoses 14)

Okyrrhoe's story is the only one with any iffy stuff, although, when something iffy does occur, the text usually says so outright.

Rejected by Apollo:

Clytie*: Oceanid nymph. turned into a heliotrope to gaze at the sun forever after the rejection.

(*Clytie's story was originally about her affection for Helios. [Ovid's Metamorphoses 4.192–270; Ovid used Greek sources about the etymology of the names involved, meaning Clytie and Helios go back to Greek times] As Apollo got superimposed over Helios's myths, people have assumed it is he who is the sun god in her myth and not Helios.)

In Conclusion...

63 people total, and 35 of them have Roman-Era roots with (as far as I know!! Don't take my word as gospel truth!!) no relation to Greece except by way of shared mythology.

Meaning, 56% of the lovers listed on this post are not entirely Greek in origin (AS FAR AS I KNOW-)! That does not mean ofc that you have to ignore them. I, for one, really like the story of Rhoeo, and Manto, and Psamethe- I find their myths sweet (Rhoeo & Manto) and bittersweet (Psamethe).

Let's get to the calculations now, yeah?

Additionally, I left off five male lovers and two female lovers - Atymnius, Leucates, Cinyras, Erginus, Leukippos, Hecate, & Acantha.

Atymnius has no references to being Apollo's lover, only to Zeus's son Sarpedon. (Wikipedia why do you even have him listed? You need sources smh)

Leucates is another male "lover" left off the rack - apparently he jumped off a cliff to avoid Apollo, but I couldn't find any mythological text to account for it- and no, OSP's wiki page is not a reliable source. There is a cliff named similarly to him where Aphrodite went (by Apollo's advice) to rid herself of her longing for Adonis after his death. Also Zeus uses it to rid himself of his love for Hera before he...well, commits adultery again. 🤷

Cinyras was a priest of Aphrodite on the island of Cyprus. He was also the island's king. Pindar calls him "beloved of Apollo" in his Pythian Ode. However, looking further into Cinyras's life throws a bit of a wrench into it. He's also cited to be a challenger to Apollo's skill, and either Apollo or Mars (Ares) kills him for his hubris.

(honestly, I kinda like the idea that Mars went into Big Brother Mode)

I did consider leaving him on the list, since technically you could argue it was a romance-gone-bad, but among every other source Cinyras is mentioned in, Pindar's the only one who puts a romantic label on him and Apollo.

Plus, he’s been described as a son of Apollo too, and I personally like that more lol

Erginus now I only put on here because I saw a tumblr post saying he was a lover of Apollo, but after consulting fellow nerds on the matter we concluded that there is (very likely) no records indicating such. Hence his placement here to curb potential misinformation <3

Leukippos is here for much the same reasons as Erginus. Full disclosure here from fellow nerds but long story short a few of his daughters are said to be Apollo’s by way of his wife, who is on this list (Philodice in the Lived section!)

Hecate, the goddess of magic and crossroads, is said to be the mother of Scylla (like, the sea-monster) by Apollo, but Scylla's parentage is one of those "no specific parents" ones, so I left her off the list.

Acantha has absolutely no classical references. There's a plant like her name, but she's made-up, so she doesn't count. *stink-eyes the guy who invented her and claimed his “sources” were reliable when they really aren’t*

(Of course, I could be wrong about any of these. Again, I'm not an expert.)

With all this in mind, this means Apollo's love life actually isn't as tragic as media portrays it, and he isn't as bad as Zeus or Poseidon in the nonconsensual area.

Does he still have those kinds of myths? Yes, with Dryope and Creusa; though, we can discount Creusa because;

1) Depends on who's translating it; and

2) Ion is given different parentage in the Bibliotheca, which yes, came much after Ion, however Xuthus was traditionally considered to be Ion's father rather than Apollo. This means there was probably a different oral tradition on Ion's parentage that just wasn't written down as early as Euripides's was- in fact, it may even just be an invention of Euripides's.

(and honestly Apollo's characterization in Ion just doesn't quite match up with the rest of his appearances in the wider myths (in my opinion, at least))

So that leaves us with just Dryope, who comes from Ovid, a Roman poet, and Antoninus Liberalis, a late Greek one.

Now I'm not saying we should throw her out because of Ovid's whole "wrote the gods even more terribly to criticize Augustus" thing, but it is something to keep in mind. Political mechanics have been used to change myths before, and this is certainly one example of it.

Additionally, I have seen many people discard Dionysus's rapes in the Dionysiaca because of how late it was written, so this one can be given similar treatment if one choses too because of just how late Ovid and Antoninus Liberalis's work was.

You can, in fact, pick and chose if you wish, especially if it'll increase your enjoyment of literature. That's certainly what I do :)

So overall, I'd say Apollo has a rather clean relationship past. He's doing pretty damn good.

Also, I think we should all take note that even if Apollo had noncon myths, that doesn't reflect on the actual god. The Ancient Greeks did not see the myths as "canon" to their gods- in fact, some were not happy with the myths showing the gods in such a light.

That's something else to keep in mind. The gods of the myths are not the gods of Greece, and are more like parables or fables for the Ancient Greeks I'd say. Lessons on morality and such, and of course, warnings against hubris and the like.

This was quite the journey, and I really hope you all enjoyed reading and learning with me! This really makes me wonder- if Apollo's love life is this good, I wonder how misinformed we are on everyone else's? I have no plans on doing Zeus or Poseidon or anyone else (not for a LONG time lol, this took a lot of effort and research!), but if anyone has any idea, or gets inspired to do something like this for any other god, please tag me!! PART ONE

12:16 pm.

The time on the clock was glaring at you, a silent caution that today's lab was going to totally suck.

You could feel irritation start to eat away at you. You and your best friend, Yara, had a deal. She would show up to the dissection today and, in exchange, you would gladly do all the work. But given that class would start in four minutes, you had a sneaking suspicion that Yara was going to in fact skip class after all.

You let your chin sink down into the comfort of your open palm, eyes flickering once again towards the black and white clock that was perched up above the classroom's blackboard. Usually, you could hear each small tick of time, but seeing as this lab was more exciting, every student in the room was currently chatting amongst their peers, covering the clock's sound.

You considered for a moment making conversation with your professor. That idea was quickly squashed once you realized that he too was preoccupied – his attention set on the clock as well, allowing the minute hand to make its final journey before beginning the class.

Suddenly, you realized that not only had Yara left you alone, but she had also left you without a partner to do the dissection. You glanced around the room, frowning as you saw that every other table was evenly numbered, meaning you would be forced to join a random pair to make a group of three.

Wicked.

"Good afternoon, everyone." Mr. Kim began, pausing to take a swig from his coffee mug. "I hope everyone read the email I sent out yesterday in regards to proper attire. If anyone isn't wearing actual shoes, then I suggest you beat it unless you're particularly amped at the idea of losing a toe when someone accidentally drops their scalpel."

A few isolated giggles rang out, but no one made any move to leave.

"No one? Radical. Feet are gross anyway–"

The sound of the classroom door suddenly being pushed open stole away everyone's attention. The late boy that walked in froze momentarily, clearly not expecting all eyes to fall onto him, but quickly regained his composure as he flashed a smile.

"Sorry I'm late, Seokjin." He apologized lazily.

"Better late than never, Jeon." Mr. Kim acknowledged briefly, raising an eyebrow. "Although, if you call me Seokjin again then you'll be the next thing I have the class dissect."

The threat was empty and pulled a shared laugh from the students, including the one it was directed at.

You hardly had time to laugh yourself because before you knew it, the boy was headed towards your table.

Not wanting to hold eye contact with the tardy student as he made his way over, you let your stare fall onto your lap. The worn-out denim of your jeans wasn't distraction enough from the sound of the boy taking a seat beside you, his bag being thrown carelessly onto the floor.

Glancing at him from the corner of your eyes, you watched as he began to rummage through it.

Jeon Jungkook.

You had recognized him the moment he had stepped in; the two of you had attended the same high school after all. Not that he knew that. You were reasonably sure that the two of you never crossed paths back then. Well, unless you count the time him and his asshole friends tore down the pep rally banners you and the party planning committee had spent so much time on.

You were well aware of the fact that he was in this class as well, but this was by far the closest you had ever physically come to him.

Jungkook was the kind of guy people noticed– muscular build, dark, messy hair with an attractive smile. Not that any of that interested you, of course. As far as you were concerned, he was still the same disruptive tool that he was in high school

Oh, god. Please don't let him be your partner.

"Take a picture, it'll last longer." Jungkook spoke suddenly, heat rocketing through your body as you realized you had yet to pull your eyes off of him.

"S-Sorry!" You stuttered out, turning in your seat so that he couldn't meet your eyes, horrified that he had caught you staring at him so openly.

Jungkook clearly didn't think much of it your total social faux pas, as a boyish laugh escaped him.

"Don't sweat it." He shrugged, dropping a sheet of paper and a pen in front of him. "I'm Jeon Jungkook, by the way."

"Yep." You nodded absentmindedly.

He seemed taken aback at your response, noticeably confused. A nervous giggle escaped you, realizing how incapable of communicating you had become.

"Uh! I just meant–– I know who you are. We, like, went to high school together." You admitted, leg bouncing anxiously under the table. "I'm Y/N."

Jungkook cocked his head, clearly surprised. "Oh shit, did we?"

You let out a noise of confirmation.

Mr. Seokjin suddenly began speaking to the class, and you turned your attention to your professor as he started to introduce the lab.

"Who was in your circle?" Jungkook asked as if he didn't even hear his professor speaking.

You offered him a sparing glance, "What?"

"Like your friend group. You had friends, right?" Jungkook teased.

"Yes, I had friends." A serious tone on your tongue, trying to somehow still listen to what your professor was saying while Jungkook conversed with you. "I just… don't think you'd know of any of them."

Jungkook seemed unsatisfied with your response, his eyebrows furrowing.

"Did you do something? Like were you on any teams or anything?"

For a moment, you contemplated telling Jungkook to bag his face, that you were actually trying to hear what Mr. Kim was saying as you genuinely cared about passing this class. But seeing as he was sitting beside you, it was probably best not to piss him off.

"Well," You began cautiously, keeping your voice low, "I was a member of mathletes–"

Jungkook cut you off immediately.

"Woah, hold on. Mathletes? Like math?"

You turned towards him, fighting back the urge to roll your eyes. You weren't at all surprised by his reaction. You couldn't imagine someone like Jungkook who spent the majority of high school cracking out jokes from the back of the classroom giving a single shit about academics.

"Yes, like math. I was also in our marching band." You offered as if that would make any difference to him.

"So... you were a loser. Gotcha." He mused, causing you to frown slightly.

Alright, asshole...

"No." You countered calmly, trying not to reveal how offended you were. "We just had different interests."

"Like totally different." He grinned stupidly.

"Yep." You responded dryly, turning away from the dark-haired boy. You were also student body treasurer, but frankly, you no longer cared enough to tell him that. Your self-esteem wasn't fragile enough to be shattered by some asswipe calling you a loser, but it certainly didn't feel good.

"Alright, so with that said, go ahead and pair up. Coats and goggles are in the back of the room. Don't let me catch you doing anything stupid and have fun." Mr. Seokjin's words caught your attention, luring out another sigh from you.

Sliding off your stool, you tried your best to avoid the stare that Jungkook was pressing against your skull, walking into the crowd of chatting students who were making their way over towards the back. Surely he had friends in this class that he could partner up with. You'll just join someone else's group.

You were just beginning to button up your white lab coat when a towering presence made its way over to you.

"So, nerd." Jungkook's voice called out, reaching around you for a lab coat. "Are we doing this thing or what?"

'Or what.' You could feel yourself wanting to answer back almost immediately.

You turned away from Jungkook to glance over the room, feeling your shoulders sink as you realized everyone was partnered and you were undoubtedly stuck with him.

Jungkook stood there, an amused look on his face as you gave him a skeptical one as if measuring him up.

"Fine." You answered begrudgingly, grabbing a pair of goggles of their rack. "But I'm taking the lead on the dissection. You can take notes and observe what we find."

Just because you were agreeing to partner up with him didn't mean you were willing to sacrifice your lab grade. And if Jungkook didn't like that then… well… he could go find someone else to annoy all class.

At your words, Jungkook let out a laugh of surprise, clearly not expecting such an authoritative tone.

"Damn, you got it, Captain. The geek ship is all yours." He joked cheekily, holding a hand to his head as if saluting you.

You sent him a tight-lipped smile, already collecting a few choice words you'd be gifting Yara the second you saw her.

"God, gag me with a spoon." You grimaced, a foul odor attacking your nose as you bent over to get closer to the preserved frog you had laid out on your tray. You picked up the scalpel, trying to prepare yourself for the first cut mentally.

Jungkook's eyes flicked towards the creature before letting out a noise of awe.

"Oh, gnarly! One of its eyes is stuck open!"

"Don't say tell me that as I'm about to cut into it!" You squeaked out, gripping your blade. "That's not exactly a comforting observation as I'm about to expose its insides. Besides, I need you taking this seriously."

Jungkook raised his hands up by his chest, waving them defensively.

"Sorry, sorry. Happy cutting." He apologized, resting his chin in his palm.

The dissection wasn't particularly hard, in fact, if it had gone as you envisioned it – you cutting and describing what you saw with Jungkook writing down notes – you imagined it would go by rather quickly. Unfortunately for you, Jungkook had a constant need for small talk and very little desire to help get this lab completed quickly.

"Let's give him a name." He called out after maybe two minutes of uninterrupted silence.

"No."

Jungkook tutted in disappointment, "Why not?"

"It's dead, Jungkook." You reasoned.

"Doesn't mean he can't have a name." He pointed out. "I'm gonna call him Bernie."

You shut your eyes, stilling yourself as took in a deep breath.

"Jungkook... please. I'm just trying to do this lab. For the both of us." You responded, pulling away from the dead frog.

"And I'm trying to pass the time. For the both of us." He mocked, an attractive albeit irritating smile on his mouth.

You set down the cutting utensil, letting the metal clang against the tray, your temper finally catching up with you.

"Has anyone ever told you you're kind of insufferable?" You said pointedly.

You weren't usually this outwardly direct to people you hardly knew, but holy cow something about this kid pushed every single damn one of your buttons.

Annoyingly, Jungkook didn't even seem to notice your change in tone, a laugh escaping him.

"Well, you certainly wouldn't be the first. Definitely the first of your social status, though." He smirked. You let out an exasperated huff.

"What the hell is your damage?" You snapped.

"What do you mean?"

"I know a loser like me probably isn't your usual company and that you clearly don't give a shit about the fact that this lab is worth twenty percent of our grade but I do. All I want is to get this lab done so we can get the hell out of each others' hair. So if you have a problem with me or something that you want to get off your chest, speak now."

There were a few silent beats where the two of you just stared at each other, Jungkook looking pensive while your chest rose and fell slowly as you tried to control your angry breaths.

"Okay." He spoke finally, catching you off guard.

"Okay?"

"My girlfriend left me for another guy today. It's why I was late. I'm just trying to get my mind off shit, I guess. I'm sorry I keep calling you names, that's just how I joke around with my friends. It probably doesn't translate well with strangers who don't know me. So, I'm sorry. I'll stop." He explained softly, a foreign expression on his face.

You blinked.

"Oh. Uh, well... Apology accepted." You replied, awkwardly.

When you had gone on your little rant, you had been hoping that it would make Jungkook feel just uneasy enough to shut up and focus on the lab. You weren't expecting anything of substance to leave his mouth, so you really had no idea where to go from here. Especially with the way he was looking at you like you had just kicked him.

"I'm sorry... about your girlfriend."

Jungkook shrugged, "Shit happens."

"Did you, like, know the guy?" You asked cautiously in a weak attempt to comfort him.

"Yeah, he's one of my brothers." He nodded.

"She left you for your brother?!" You exclaimed, your jaw all but dropping. Immediately, Jungkook flinched, eyes flickering across the room where a couple of students had turned towards the two of you in interest.

"Pipe down, okay? I don't need everyone knowing my business, damn." He frowned, throwing you a glare.

"Sorry, I'm just... that's gonna be one awkward family dinner." You scrunched your nose.

"What? Oh no, not my actual brother. He's in the same fraternity as me. Frat brother." Jungkook clarified.

"Ohhh." You nodded.

His... fraternity brother. Of course.

You bit down on your lip.

Jungkook eyed you for a moment before letting out a sigh. "Go ahead."

"What?" You cocked your head in fake confusion.

"I already know what you're thinking."

"What am I thinking?"

"You're thinking that me being in a frat just confirmed the fact that you think I'm some sort of meathead." He continued, rolling his eyes.

A sharp laugh fell through your lips and Jungkook's eyes widened at the sound. It was the first time he had made you laugh, he realized.

"Psshh, not even." You lied through your teeth, trying and failing to suppress your smile.

"Even." He countered, playfulness in his tone. The both of you held each others' eyes for a moment, mutual grins exchanged.

"Anyway, I'm sure she'll be back soon enough." He continued calmly.

"Oh, so you're gonna try and win her back?" You asked.

"Hm? Nah, we've always been on and off, she'll come back eventually."

You frowned, "And you're okay with that?"

You weren't typically one to judge others' love lives given how you currently didn't have one, but you couldn't help but marvel at Jungkook's words. He shrugged in response.

You shifted uncomfortably, "Have you considered moving on? Or at least doing something to get her actually to stay with you?"

"Like what?" Jungkook laughed, clearly not taking you seriously.

Great question. You weren't particularly skilled with knowledge when it came to romantic relationships; you had only ever had one boyfriend, and while it was fairly serious, things had ended amicably enough.

You thought back to your sisters at that moment. The twins were older than you and had both gone through a significant number of breakups. When the three of you were growing up, they usually relied on one another when it came to boy troubles, but that didn't mean you didn't get an earful late at night. Your bedroom shared a wall with theirs and, well, Rosa and Lia had always been loud people after all.

"Give her a reason to regret letting you go... become a better man and whatnot." You responded after some contemplation. "Show her what she's missing."

"Oh, she knows exactly what she's missing." Jungkook smirked, eyes flickering towards the front of his jeans. "Why do you think she keeps coming back?"

You blinked.

"I think I just threw up in my mouth."

"Dick this good doesn't come around that often." He continued seriously, wagging his pointer finger from side to side.

"Incredible. I just did it again." You deadpanned, causing Jungkook to snort.

"Seriously? I'm what's grossing you out in this scenario?" He mused, looking down at the frog you were previously dissecting. You let out a hum, nodding.

"As much as I appreciate the 411 on your dick, I've got a layer of fascia to cut through."

"Fine. Why don't you try and make conversation then, since your baggin' on everything I bring up?"

"I don't have anything to talk about." You shrugged, moving over to the frog, beginning to cut.

Jungkook raised an eyebrow, "Really? Nothing exciting happening in your life?"

"Yes, actually. I just located Bernie's trachea." You revealed. Jungkook walked over to your end of the table, eyes wide with disbelief as he leaned in for a closer look.

Your eyes widened as his shoulder brushed itself against yours, his sudden proximity unexpected.

He smelled like cologne, clearly wearing enough to make itself known past the stench of formaldehyde and you found yourself taking a step back, slightly flustered.

Sure, Jungkook was just a dumb frat boy, but he was an attractive one and it was just a little bit daunting.

You watched his profile as he marveled at the revealed insides of the frog, even reaching for a pair of forceps to pull back the flap of skin to get a better look.

"Actually, there is something I'm excited about."

"If it's his heart, I'm already one step ahead of you." He quipped back, not looking up from the frog. You shook your head.

"I want to throw an event on campus."

Jungkook's eyes flickering towards you was your cue to continue talking.

"It's to encourage more women to pursue careers in science and engineering. I've planned the whole thing and even made flyers."

"Well… it's no frog heart but that's certainly something." Jungkook smiled, causing your heart to pound.

You nodded, suddenly growing excited.

"All I need a sponsor. I can't afford to throw it myself– not to mention the fact that I'm not even sure people would even show up. I just think there are so many opportunities in STEM fields that more girls would thrive in if they were just encouraged enough." You continued, eyebrows furrowing as you began to think.

"Do you know that just a few years ago we made the first-ever artificial heart. A heart, Jungkook; a man got to live an additional one hundred and twelve days even though his original heart was nearly ripped to shreds. And just a few months ago, a child was born through gestational surrogacy. The woman who birthed her was literally just a human surrogate, she didn't pass down any DNA to the child. None! I mean, babies can be born from Petri dishes! We are literally changing the boundaries of fertility and sterility as we know it!"

Jungkook was grinning as he watched you speak. He couldn't help it. Here you were, decked out in your lab coat and goggles, scalpel in hand as you rambled on about science. It was kind of endearing, he noted... in a dorky way, at least.

"So, uh, yeah. Sorry, I just…" You came back down to earth eventually, noting the way he was staring at you with amusement. You hadn't meant to get so caught up in your thoughts. "I realize that probably isn't as exciting to everyone as it is to me. That was my attempt at making conversation."

Jungkook had a dumb look on his face, and you weren't surprised at all with his reply.

"You know... I bet there's someone out there that finds all your science talk really hot."

You let out a deep sigh, shoulders slumping down in defeat.

"Not everything is about sex, you know."

"No, but everything interesting is." He grinned lopsidedly.

Jungkook had this unusually natural composure about him. As if he could shrug off any inconvenience with one stupid smile.

How frustrating. It made it increasingly difficult for you to stay mad at him for very long.

"Come on, meathead. Let's get this over with." You rolled your eyes, nudging your shoulder into his muscular one.

"Y/N!" Jungkook's voice called out, halting you mid-stride.

You let out a sigh, forcing a smile onto your face as you turned around, watching as an expectant looking Jungkook jogged over to you, his hair bouncing with every step.

"Hey," He breathed out as he reached you, "you left so fast I didn't get a chance to say goodbye."

Yeah, and you thought you had gotten away with it too.

Jungkook wasn't a bad kid; he was funny and didn't take things too seriously– even if those qualities about him were slightly frustrating. No, Jungkook was alright you supposed, but that didn't mean the two of you were suddenly best friends. You didn't care much for formalities, especially when all you wanted to do was go back to your dorm, shower, and take a nap.

"Oh, right. Sorry." You recognized, adjusting the strap of your bag over your shoulder.

Jungkook merely smiled at you, and you wondered if he was gonna say anything else. Realizing that he wasn't, you pressed your lips together awkwardly.

"Well... bye." You nodded stiffly, already moving to turn and make your exit. A warm hand wrapping around your wrist stopped you from getting any further, however.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!"

You stared down at where Jungkook's fingers touched your skin, your eyes wide in surprise. He must have noticed the way your body tensed because he let go of you as quickly as he grabbed you.

"I've, uh, actually got something I want to talk to you about." He grinned sheepishly, the same hand coming up to rub at the back of his neck.

You cleared your throat, pushing down the way your stomach was doing nervous flips, unfortunately, affected by the unexpected skinship. You tilted your chin up silently, urging Jungkook to continue.

"This is gonna sound sudden... and I know you don't really know me..." Jungkook began, causing your stomach to drop in horror.

Oh, God. Was... Was Jeon Jungkook going to ask you out?

"Spit it out, Jeon." You ordered, voice spiked high as your nerves began to rack.

"Would you mind dating me to make my girlfriend jealous?"

You blinked dryly, taking a moment to replay in your head just exactly what Jungkook had asked of you.

Okay... so not quite the love confession you were anticipating...

"Would I mind– What?" You gaped in disbelief.

"It wouldn't be for, like, too long. Probably just for a party or two." Jungkook shrugged as if anything he was saying was making any sense.

You shook your head, "Wait– Seriously, time out. What on earth are you asking me right now?"

Jungkook slipped both his hands into his jacket, which you had only just now taken a moment to admire. It was a brown leather bomber jacket with a few military patches sewn into the sleeves that you assumed must have come with the jacket as Jungkook didn't seem like the crafty type. Most of all, it looked warm and it reminded you that every second you stood here talking to Jungkook was a second you could be spending warm in your dorm under your covers.

"I was thinking about what you said. About showing my ex what she's missing." He explained.

"And you thought that was me auctioning myself off to be your fake girlfriend?" You laughed.

"Look, I know her, okay? If she were to think that you and I were a thing, she'd want to get back together."

You let out a sigh. This relationship of Jungkook's was revealing itself to be suckier and suckier as time went on.

"Why me?" You pressed. "I don't even know who your girlfriend is and I doubt she knows me. Is she in a sorority by chance?"

"Well, yeah–"

"Great! Get with one of her sorority sisters then. Give her a taste of her own medicine." You actually weren't usually one to promote revenge but, hell, if it meant it would get Jungkook off your ass then you were all for it.

"No can do. It's gotta be someone new and that Kiri doesn't know otherwise she won't care." Jungkook tutted.

"I'm not following." You admitted, truly not understanding why Jungkook was asking you of all people. You had only spent two hours with the guy. What about you in a lab coat and reeking of formaldehyde had told him that you were fake girlfriend material?

Jungkook suddenly took a look around and you followed suit, growing even more confused when Jungkook stepped closer and dropped his voice low.

"Kiri... she's president of her sorority; pretty, social, popular, you feel me? If I get someone like her then it just looks like I'm trying to replace her. But if I get–"

"If you say 'someone like you' as in implying I am neither of those things, I'll sock you in the nose." You scoffed, crossing your arms over your chest.

"–someone smart and independent, things that she's not, then she'll think I'm trying to forget her, which is what will get her attention. She'll be pissed, it's perfect." The dark-haired boy concluded, looking smug as if he had said something profound.

"Wow, you really are prince charming." You mused dryly. "Well, sorry to burst your bubble but I have no interest in being used as a pawn in your love game so..."

"You wouldn't be a pawn." Jungkook shook his head. "You'd be rewarded for your services–"

"Isn't that prostitution?" You cut off cheekily, causing Jungkook to roll his eyes.

"–I can help you fund your event." He continued.

At his words, you froze. Your head cocked to the side cautiously as you stared back at him, trying to decipher his sincerity.

"You can?"

Finally. This was the first time Jungkook could tell he had actually piqued your interest enough to really listen to him.

"Beta Tau Sigma. Our frat gets a monetary grant every semester in exchange for helping out in the community and helping fund an event for education sure would make us look damn good. While I'm not on the finance committee, one of my closest brothers is and I can totally pitch hosting your event to him."

"Holy shit..." You breathed out quietly, his words clearly making an impression on you.

If Beta Tau Sigma were to sponsor your event, not only could you afford to throw it but there was a real chance that people would actually come. Greek life was everything to your university and there weren't many significant school events that a frat or sorority wasn't behind.

Hold on. Why were you seriously considering this right now?

"But, I mean, you don't want to get involved in my love life, right? It's cool. See you next class, Y/N."

Jungkook shrugged coolly, spinning on his heel as he began to walk away, dismissing you with a simple gesture of a hand.

Your mind was racing. You had poured so much time into planning this event... Could the solution to finally getting it standing on its own two feet be found in some cocky frat boy? Was your pride that dismissable that you'd pretend to date him just to get what you wanted?

"Jungkook!" Was your inner conflict's final decision.

The boy paused his motions, his knowing smirk hidden as he had his back towards you.

"Hm?" He feigned innocence as he turned to face you.

"If you can seriously get your frat to sponsor my event, then..."

You took a step towards him, words trailing off.

Jungkook took a moment to look you up and down. You were dressed in jeans and a black knit sweater, the outline of a small kitten embroidered on it with white thread. It was an amusing juxtaposition given the nature of your personality.

Your hands were clenched into small fists, a shining, determined gleam in your ardent eyes.

"Then?" He mused smugly.

"Then I'll be the most bitchin' fake girlfriend you've ever had." You declared, a wide grin crawling along the length of your mouth.

Jungkook said nothing at first, just staring at you in silent reverence. He knew he hardly knew you but something about the resolve in your tone had him believing every word.

He extended a hand out towards you, catching you by surprise.

"So, do we have a deal? Partners?" There was mischievous timber to his words, the kind that made you feel as if this would all later come back to bite you in the ass.

Pushing that pestering thought away, you took his hand into yours, holding his eyes as you gave it a firm shake.

"Partners."

Boku No Hero Academia/My Hero Academia: Chapter 05: Regressive Sunsets

He ended up letting Ochaco down.

Mina and Yuga had caught them by complete surprise. The two of them had expected that their classmates to come barging through the opening, but only Yuga had done so. Whilst waiting on their attack, Akuriru had his back turned when Yuga slid past the entrance and shot his naval laser straight towards them.

If Ochaco hadn’t launched herself at him, he would have been caught by the blast, something Yuga was lectured about afterwards, but that left them on the exact spot Mina needed them to be.

Ochaco had already lost her concentration on their target, causing it to fall at the exact same time Mina melted the floor beneath them. Needless to say, Mina and Yuga would have won if it wasn’t for the object ‘exploding’ once it hit the ground. The exercise ended with both teams failing.

Ochaco had been nice enough to try and encourage him by saying they would do better the next time, but Akuriru had only ended up apologising to the point Katsuki had snapped and yelled at him to not be a Deku-copy.

“One damn nerd is enough,” Katsuki had said, which earned a few negative responses from their classmates. Akuriru tried apologising to Katsuki for his comment, but Momo stopped him with a hand on his shoulder.

The rest of their day’s classes had been pretty average, English, math, and a couple of other basics. Akuriru hadn’t concentrated in those classes as much as he should have, not with the stiff pain in his back from when he fell from the floor above. Mina had apologised for possibly hurting him. Her expression was so sincere that he couldn’t bring himself to tell her the truth over how much it had hurt, so he tried his best to reassure her that he barely even felt anything. Ochaco knew he was lying but didn’t say anything either.

When their classes ended for the day, most of their classmates had insisted on staying behind until Izuku got out of the nurse’s office. In all honesty, Akuriru wanted to head straight home, but before he knew it, he had been patiently sitting in his seat, waiting on Izuku’s return just like the others.

The class door slid open, and the class held their breath. The moment Izuku slid the door to the side, Eijiro nearly tackled him back out of the room. Denki and Tenya were right beside him, all three of them going all out on their compliments. Akuriru would have felt sympathy for Izuku about being overwhelmed by their classmates, if he didn’t feel some form of envy over how everyone was doting over the other boy.

Maybe that was why Katsuki was so against Izuku. From what he could gather, the two had attended the same middle school. Maybe Izuku had been more popular than Katsuki, and that was why Katsuki disliked him so much. It was hard to imagine, given their personalities, but with the way things sometimes worked in the world, it wasn’t all that impossible.

When Izuku finally had a chance to breathe, he asked where Katsuki was, and the moment he was told the other had already left, he went sprinting after him. Maybe Akuriru was wrong about them. Maybe the two of them had been good friends at one point. The rest of their class seemed equally, if not more, confused.

For some reason Akuriru found himself smiling softly as he got up and gathered his things, bidding a swift farewell to his cousin with the promise of seeing her again the next morning. With a wave to the rest of the class, Akuriru followed the path Izuku and Katsuki had taken to the front gate.

He had expected to see Izuku’s back, but to see Katsuki still standing there with All Might’s hands on his shoulders, Akuriru froze, feeling like he was intruding on a moment. It didn’t last long.

Katsuki snapped something at Izuku and All Might, the pro hero no student would dare snap at, before storming off on his own, trying to keep his confidence in check. Deciding that it was now or never, Akuriru walked to the gate, thanking All Might for their class exercise, and wishing Izuku luck for the future in the process.

A second later, he left the school.

Arrow S5 Ratings: The Viewership Apocalypse

My level of obsessive compulsive nerd is that I continue to work on my Arrow ratings math project despite that fact that I only “meh watched” six episodes this season. I should be working on my dissertation or my revise and resubmit pile in my spare time but this remains way more fun. Plus after my Season 4 Model worked so well I had to see if I could duplicate it for Season 5.

Arrow Season Five: The Beginning of the End

First, let’s review the Arrow S5 average ratings & demo + adjusted ratings & demo change since S4 season.  

Everyone knows that Arrow ratings AND CW ratings have declined sharply this season overall (http://www.vulture.com/2017/05/2016-2017-tv-season-in-five-really-depressing-charts.html). This article and the CW chart in here are helpful to center the conversation but I have critiques. First, no fair comparison of ratings decline over last season can include Supergirl. Comparing ratings from CBS to CW is not Apples to Oranges it is Apples to Volkswagens. Thus I removed Supergirl from my chart. Second, for change over time comparisons the number of viewers is mathematically preferable to the demo.

Math Segway: the demo is already a fraction so comparing percentages of fractions can lead to over/under predictability (Type One and Type Two Error) especially when your base fraction is an especially low number….like the demo from most CW shows.

The 2016-2017 CW ratings decline season average (thus far since some shows are still wrapping) is -14.7 with The Vampire Diaries and -17.6 without The Vampire Diaries.

The overall network decline of live viewers is steep. The shows hit the hardest are the limited run shows and the mid-season replacement shows (The 100, Reign, iZombie, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) and Arrow.  On the average, CW shows that started in the Fall only had a -13.6% decline in viewership over last season while the mid-season replacement shows declined -22%. While CW shows that had limited run seasons declined -18.7 while full run season shows declined -14.2. 

Arrow & Crazy Ex-GF are CW’s only show returning for next season that are not within one standard deviation of that -13.6% Fall average. And Crazy Ex-GF is already a limited run show. Arrow is the CW’s only full run show to have their ratings fall this hard. Arrow’s steep rating decline is far closer to the decline for limited run shows. That ain’t good. At all!

The benchmark I have used for Arrow’s season performances is the % viewership decline or growth (the rate of change) for each season compared to the average of the last two long run CW drama (Supernatural & Vampire Diaries) at the same point in their run. This chart shows you how much of the audience they lost from the prior season.

Arrow viewership was on par or better at the same point in Seasons 2 & 3. For Season 4, Supernatural & Vampire Diaries averaged a 0% decline and Arrow was about -10% off that average of the viewership decline. For Season 5, Supernatural & Vampire Diaries averaged a -15.9% decline. If Arrow had followed that trend they would have averaged about 2.09M viewers for Season 5. Instead Arrow’s 1.75M viewer average was a -29.7% decline from Season 4 and an almost -14% off that anticipated average. The Arrow decline are getting substantially more noted than prior CW shows at the same point in their run. The Season 6 average decline for Supernatural & Vampire Diaries was -23.5%. If, and it is a big if, Arrow follows that pattern they can expect to hit somewhere in the range of 1.34M viewers next season.

I got into a Twitter spat this past week with a stan who insists this decline is a-okay and the CW totally expected it because the overall trend in declining live viewing. And yes! Fewer people are watching live now. But the DVR, iTunes, Netflix, the CW ap, and illegal downloads were not ALL invented this season. The Arrow S5 ratings decline is above and beyond this season’s network average and the anticipated decline of prior CW S5 shows. The Thursday night move to 9PM BEHIND a show that is entering a 13th season with a lower average rating and a lower average demo is a panic move. Moving the air date/time is a network shakeup. It is not as serious a network shakeup as reducing the episode order or rotating out showrunners but the writing on the wall seems pretty clear here.

I’m not trying to use math to tell you why people DO or DON’T watch or gage the quality of Arrow Season 5. That’s not how math works. I’m here to tell you that viewers tuned out in mass. And it did not go unnoticed by the CW brass.

Season Four to Season Five Viewer Analysis: The Purge

Since S5 of Arrow had such a notable decline in viewership I was curious if I could parse out where the trigger point for viewer departure occurred. In my academic field (higher education) we have a concept called “summer melt” which is the number of high school graduates who report they plan to go to college next year but don’t actually enroll in the fall. For a host of reasons, these students “melt” before enrolling in college. I was curious if I could parse out S5 Arrow’s viewership declines, so I started looking for “summer melt.”

I averaged the final 6 episodes of Seasons 3 and Season 4 and compared it to an average of the first 6 episodes of Season 4 and Season 5, respectively to calculate Arrow’s summer melt. Comparatively, Season 4 lost -9.7% of the audience from S3 and only 1.1% of that viewership loss was from “summer melt.” The bulk of viewers who stopped watching Arrow from S3 to S4 did so DURING Season 4.

The hiatus before S5 Arrow lost 14.4% of viewers. That is 310K viewers who stopped watching Arrow before S5 even started. Their viewership loss will be attributed in the S5 -29.7% viewership loss but they did not even return for S5, so truly their departure should be attributed to S4. In fact, those 310K “summer melt” viewers represent an estimated 45% of ALL lost Arrow S5 viewers with 55% of viewership loss coming during S5.

From that beginning of S4 (first six episode average) and the end of S5 (last six episode average) Arrow lost about one million viewers. I made this chart to demonstrate which point those one million viewers left the show.

Again, there is no trying to parse quality or tell you what about Season 4 or Season 5 drove viewers away here. That is for viewers, critics, and the CW to speculate over. Math can’t help you there.

Arrow S5 Predictor Model: Worked Again!

I noted this in the Fall (http://rillacuthbert.tumblr.com/post/151450182766/arrow-s5-ratings-models) but to recap, I built two S5 models to test which is preferred for aggregate rate of change ratings prediction. The 5x01 rating was entered in to the models to generate the predictions for the subsequent episodes and season average for both models. The Oliver Model is based on ratings rate of change for S1-S4 and The Felicity Model is based on the ratings rate of change for S1-S4 to episode 7 and then S3-S4 from episode 8-23. The hypothesis being tested here is if the in season, post-crossover ratings bounce is sustainable and predictable. 

The final result is that The Oliver Model is statistically significant predictor of Arrow S5 ratings and The Felicity Model is not. The takeaways?

The value of the post-crossover ratings bounce has limited impact on the season average rating thus The Oliver model is superior to The Felicity Model  

That for two consecutive seasons a statistical model correctly predicted Arrow’s average rating

That suggest my original hypothesis about Arrow viewing remains true: Within a single season, viewership rises and falls across a predictable trend based on prior viewership in part because TV watching is cyclical and seasonal based on the counterfactual of what else is airing.

You can see this in the table below that shows the highest and lowest Arrow ratings by episode number average. I did separate averages one for the full five seasons and one for S3-S5 (again to measure crossover impact). I bolded the episodes that appear in both average.

The highest rated Arrow episodes each season tend to be the premiere and the episodes around the crossover. The lowest rated Arrow episodes each season are the episodes in the final third of the season. If you plot the episode averages for the full five seasons and for S5-S3 you can see clear viewership patterns emerge.

This again suggest that viewership is cyclical over the course of the season and rarely driven by the plot of an individual episode.  Beyond the crossover, almost never can you say a plot point increased or decreased Arrows ratings. These viewership trends are predictable and observable. Viewers are far less likely to watch episodes 19 or 22 live across every season regardless of what plot or storyline is in that episode. 

IF SOMEONE TELLS YOU THAT A SHIP OR A GUEST STAR OR A COMIC BOOK CHARACTER OR THE TIDES OF THE MOON ARE WHY AN EPISODE DID OR DID NOT GET A GOOD RATING THEY ARE MAKING SHIT UP.

They will continue to do so. And it will continue to annoy the piss out of me.

I have another ratings post on the back burner about applying the Arrow ratings model to other CW shows and networks, what I found out, and what it means for modeling Arrow Season 6 but that is for another day.

Andrew drags him onto a few rides on principle and hates every one of them but keeps going when he hears Alex laughing wildly as they fly down Splash Mountain. He even gets the souvenir photo of him holding onto Alex for dear life.

It is a pretty good way to end the summer.

It shouldn't surprise him that when he came back to the Spears' house that Drake was there. He watches Drake's eyes take in Alex and his blood boils.

Well, we entered the fifth year of the Iowa Music Showcase. Unfortunately, we were gone for over half of the previous year! Hopefully, things will go better this year! Alright. Full disclosure. This is a really good fic. But … I’ve never understood the whole - ‘it makes Bill Cipher into a redeemable character’ thing. Bill feels well rounded and it gives Bill Cipher good motivations for the show. But … he’s still actually a rather genuinely rude person who does bad stuff with only slightly more understood reasons. If anything it just pulls him from psychopath to misguided. I don’t feel sorry for him, I’m just six times more interested in him as a character. It didn’t happen like so many had once predicted. There hadn’t been an Antichrist born who brought the world to flames. There hadn’t been a nuclear confrontation between two super-powers. It had been just like the sci-fi novels of the twentieth century had written. The last great war had been fought around the globe but not with soldiers, but with accountants. Corporations with more money and power than countries had been the Weapons of Mass Destruction that would bring the world into the new era. Wealthy elite people had scorched the planet in the name of profits for themselves and their shareholders. Asia had invaded the Americas, but it wasn’t with kamikaze pilots that they had achieved this goal - no, it had been with “legal immigration” and corrupt officials and greedy people in business in Canada, then the US. What was once a middle class, hadn’t existed in over fifty years, instead there were those who had, and those who had not. Most of the people on the planet, fell into the Had Not category.

Global warming, mad-men dictators, the fall of the USA as a world super-power and everyday greed had done in humanity. For the price of cheap disposable products (from Asia), western society had fallen. The addiction western society had to fossil fuels that was sold to the public by their elected and bought leaders, had kept them using oil, coal and natural gas all the while, knowing without a shadow of a doubt, that the planet was doomed. For dollars and cents, western society had sold their land, their businesses, their education, their natural resources to Asia, and then seemed stunned when it dawned on them, China and Asia had won the war without a single shot fired. Their leaders kept them sucking on the gas, coal and oil pipes like a corner street dealer selling meth or crack.

In the first half of the 21st century man-kind had achieved incredible advances in science and technology. At times in the first couple of decades the species of man thrived. But it was during this crucial time, that the would finally stumble. And that stumble, would be the last mis-step our species was given. Ten percent of the world population died off in the first five years of the new heat. The people in poor and developing countries felt it first and felt it hardest - but then, those people always do. The great migrations would begin, not because of war, not because of an ideology or a religion - no they started out of necessity. Man-kind could longer survive in some regions of the planet - the damage was that bad. Coast lines and coastal cities were swallowed up by the rising sea levels.

The wealthy, the powerful, they had seen it coming. In the late 1980’s, the wealthy started buying up remote ranch land around the globe. Farmers and ranchers in Canada were offered great sums of money by Asia billionaires for the homes their families had once homesteaded. By the 2015, industrial farmers and the wealthy controlled or owned most of the “good land” left. Rednecks in British Columbia, Washington State, and Montana laughed at the wealthy buying up farms and ranches. But when the West fell, those same rednecks weren’t laughing any more. Those same rednecks would be slow to realize they had been played by politicians bought and owned by the wealthy. The only thing Make America Great Again ever did, was help to speed up the process. Did they really believe that the oil companies, the big box stores that sold cheaply made goods made in Asia, that these companies actually cared about them?

No, the geeks and nerds had called this one. The scientists, the activists, the nerdy environmental ones, the artists, they had nailed it. The data and math supported their position, but like some bad play, the wealthy used money and fear to discredit them. And we all paid the price for that. A beautiful once blue orb in the milky way paid the price for it. 89 percent of wildlife had paid the price for it. Eventually 35% of mankind paid the price for it, because you see, it took that first ten percent to die in front of everyone’s faces on screens before society woke up and demanded change. But that change was too late for another 25% of the women, children and men on the planet Earth. It was the same with the New War. Fear and greed had enabled Asia to brilliantly take land, businesses, jobs, and homes away from those living in the west. When Canada and the US should have been welcoming refugees and poor immigrates to a new life, they instead created a panic among their citizens that “these people will take away your safety and livelihood”. And while society was swallowing that fear down their throats, the politicians, the wealthy and elite had been making profits selling their countries out to Asia and the middle east.

Like something out of Shadowrun gaming session, corporations ran the world into the ground. The elite bought up the fresh water. The elite lived in safe and habitable regions on the planet. The elite ate real food, and rumour had it that includes things like beef, pork and chicken - actual meat from an animal. The elite had access to the miracles of modern tech-medicine and all the benefits that came with that. The elite lived.

The rest of us, well we survived as best we could.

Well, we entered the fifth year of the Iowa Music Showcase. Unfortunately, we were gone for over half of the previous year! Hopefully, things will go better this year! We will include all the podcasts, videos, and articles we featured last year. We've also added the podcast, Audible Farm, an interview podcast from local musician Peter R Stockdale of the Des Moines punk band, 3 Finger Betty.

We also, on an irregular basis, will be featuring older articles, audio, and video, from sources like KRUI 89.7 FM in Iowa City, Des Moines Music Coalition, KURE radio in Ames, as well as older websites like Lock N Load from the Sioux Falls/Sioux City area, Des Noise, Des Moines is Not Boring, Iowaves, and Band Bombshell, among others. I'm not doing any podcast of the favorite tunes from the Iowa Music Showcase podcast, because - 1) I haven't had the time, and 2) we only did four podcasts last year! Well, we entered the fifth year of the Iowa Music Showcase. Unfortunately, we were gone for over half of the previous year! Hopefully, things will go better this year! We will include all the podcasts, videos, and articles we featured last year. We've also added the podcast, Audible Farm, an interview podcast from local musician Peter R Stockdale of the Des Moines punk band, 3 Finger Betty, and Iowa metal band, Unity.

We also, on an irregular basis, will be featuring older articles, audio, and video, from sources like KRUI 89.7 FM in Iowa City, Des Moines Music Coalition, KURE radio in Ames, as well as older websites like Lock N Load from the Sioux Falls/Sioux City area, Des Noise, Des Moines is Not Boring, Iowaves, and Band Bombshell, among others. I'm not doing any podcast of the favorite tunes from the Iowa Music Showcase podcast, because - 1) I haven't had the time, and 2) we only did four podcasts last year!
