Definitely!
it’s legitimately so fucked up and heartbreaking that in this society the ability to just like…relax and have fun with friends and loved ones is like…considered something you have to earn or make time at your own expense for. it should be regarded as one of the inalienable cornerstones of being human. i’m not joking, like the fact that having fun and chilling with your buds is considered an expendable frivolity instead of a vital core need is heartbreaking. not that capitalist society has ANY vital core needs that it’s not prepared to gate behind a monetary cost though lmao.

“People never seemed to notice that, by saving time, they were losing something else. No one cared to admit that life was becoming even poorer, bleaker and more monotonous.”

Calendars and clocks exist to measure time, but that signifies little because we all know that an hour can seem as eternity or pass in a flash, according to how we spend it.

Michael Ende did not like the 1980s adaptation of his book. I imagine it was because the movie stopped halfway through and didn't address Bastian's journey and the mistakes he overcame. I've never read the book and the movie did seem complete in itself to me, but we should all be prepared for a very different take.
Good! Now give us the rainbow lion in the Many Coloured Desert that we deserved.

Every argument I see for why AI art is the next step in creativity reminds me of the Men in Gray from Momo, no joke. It’s almost to the point of parody.
The Men in Gray in Momo tell people that there isn’t enough time, and they have to save the time they have now so they can spend it later and live their best life. Every Pro-AI person I come across while lurking online says that they don’t have the time to develop their art skills, and that AI will pump out more and more art at a fast rate that saves them time to pump out more and more AI art.
The Men in Gray in Momo advocate “saving time” to adults by telling them to cut things out like fun hobbies or friendships that do not give them any financial benefit/personal gain, and as a result the adults in the world become even sadder and more depressed, no one has time to just enjoy life, because their lives are being drained by the Timesaving Bank.
(Children are immune to the Men in Gray because they cannot be convinced that their fun and games are a waste of time. Like the Men in Gray grumble in their board meetings that if not for children, all of mankind would have been under their thumb by now.)
But it isn’t just that: Momo has a friend named Guido who loves making up stories. He becomes a famous writer/storyteller, but thanks to the Men in Gray the demand for his output increases, and he has to resort to hacking his older works into pieces in order to recycle the plots in newer works. He becomes disatisfied with his life, but can’t get out of it. I can assure you if Michael Ende wrote Momo today, he would have had the Men in Gray offer Guido a machine that allows him to create his own stories “in the interest of saving money and time.”
I guess what I’m saying is, more people should read Momo.

Hear me out: so Dean’s propane fueled dream in Showdown at Cremation Creek shows he knows about The Neverending Story, right?
Makes sense he’d seen the movie, but what if he had read the book also? It is radically different from the movie, an exploration on what would happen to a lonely kid had they decided to live entirely in their dream world.
Anyways there’s this scene where Bastian the protagonist has lost all his memories and needs to find one to safely return home, at risk of staying in his dream world as a mindless fool. After some grueling work he finds one, even if he can’t remember who it is. It’s an image of his father, trapped in a block of ice, heartlessly slaving away at a job he takes no pleasure from. Bastian knows the man is important to him and loves him instinctively, even if he doesn’t remember having a relationship with him.
Now imagine if you will, a kid Dean being kinda moved at the scene and forgetting it, and an adult Dean that revisits it and suddenly, it clicks.
#venture bros#dean venture#the never ending story#michael ende#it was such a transformative read for me#it offers something different every time I revisit it as I grow older

What’s a book that’s completely changed you? To the point that if you have never read it, you wouldn’t have a piece of you.
Ooooh there are definitely a few, but the one that sticks out to me the most right now is Momo by Michael Ende. It is so brilliant (especially for a children’s book), and I literally think about that book every day.
I also want to give an honorable mention to The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky because that book changed my life like ten years ago lol.

5 Books
What are five books that you would always recommend? Those you still think about, have re-read multiple times or just absolutely enjoyed and want others to know about as well?
Full list below break because I included cover pictures and it made it long as fuck. I was tagged in this by @cull3nblaze
The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. I absolutely adore the entire book series. I'm slowly making my way through all of them right now.
The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Mountains of Mist. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.

2. The Neverending Story by Michael Ende (or Die unendliche Geschichte for all my German speaking moots). I have loved this book for years. Just something about it always tickles my brain in a good way. (I fully believe that the English Translations use Fantastica as the translation of Phantásien because Disney had already made Fantasia and nobody wanted to get sued)
When it comes to controlling human beings there is no better instrument than lies. Because, you see, humans live by beliefs. And beliefs can be manipulated. The power to manipulate beliefs is the only thing that counts.

3. Memnoch the Devil by Anne Rice. I absolutely ADORE most of the Vampire Chronicle books (up until Blood Canticle anyways) and Memnoch the Devil is my absolute favourite part. I swear if the Vampire Chronicles TV series gets this far I will die happy if they do a great job of adapting it.
In the beginning, there were stars. And they danced with a million colors, swirling and colliding, creating worlds and endless possibilities.

4. The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien. Tell me, if you know me, are you even remotely shocked that this is on here? Its my absolute favourite books. I love it so much.
I am old, Gandalf. I don't look it, but I am beginning to feel it in my heart of hearts. Well-preserved indeed! Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean: like butter that has been scraped over too much bread. That can't be right. I need a change, or something.

5. Lord of Snow and Shadows by Sarah Ash. A book that few of you might actually know but I would highly suggest that everyone read it. Its fantasy but it has a more Eastern European feel to the entire thing. 10/10 would recommend. Its a Trilogy the continues with Prisoner of the Iron Tower, and Children of the Serpent Gate. You should all read these.

No Pressure tagging goes to @no-goodbyes-no-regrets @jamieroyjamieroy @cliophilyra @beanarie @inawickedlittletown and @officialwaterchuck

Non si può mai pensare alla strada tutta in una volta, tutta intera, capisci ? Si deve soltanto pensare al prossimo passo, al prossimo respiro. Sempre soltanto al gesto che viene dopo…
