Barstow Pays 1.3 Million Dollars for 2018 Police Shooting at the Sands Motel
The City of Barstow in Southern California has settled a case involving one of its police officers and the family of one Leonard Angelo Sanchez for $1,300,000,00[1]. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office found the February 25, 2018 shooting of Leonard Angelo Sanchez, in front of his common-law wife and two of his children, to have been justified. "I would, actually. I always found you to be pretty sincere when it came to serious things," Tim said between bites. It wasn't often that Tim went to visit inmates -- prison policies were always a bitch to navigate -- but he did interview TJ way back. Even without the facts of the case, Tim would have believed them.
TJ's question, though, reminded Tim that his own sincerity had its limits. He shook his head either way. "Can't say for sure how I feel -- that'd lead to bias and I'm trying to avoid that in whatever gets published," Tim explained.
At the mention of the shooter not getting arrested, Tim shook his head. "The report said they were read their Miranda rights and taken to the station -- whoever they are; hard to know if an arrest was made afterwards without any identifying information." That was the part of the suspicion Tim and the other journalists had: why were there more redactions related to the adults than the minors involved in this case? It was a question that Tim wanted answers to and that the rest of the town deserved to know. "There's a few reasons why someone's information is protected to that degree, public servants, military veterans, or just plain police misconduct. Too early to know and even then -- journalists can only get so far sometimes."
Tumblr media
"Would you believe me if I said I considered trying to study law or journalism when I was inside? Thought I could be one of those people who gets fucked by the system and then turns around and starts fighting for others. Not sure if I'm cut out for all that, though." TJ had their beliefs, and they weren't afraid to stand up for themselves, but they weren't necessarily the academic type. They were smart, but they preferred the artistic nature of tattooing, even if sometimes it was a simple 'gimme a heart with my girlfriend's name in it'.
"Kinda lucky, though. I think since the lawsuit, the cops are afraid to get accused of being biased, so they tend to leave me alone." Which was just as well, given the things TJ got up to behind the scenes of Outlaw Ink. The 'outlaw' part was in the name for a reason. They'd gotten good at keeping quiet, though. At any given moment, the local law enforcement officers could decide they were pissed enough at TJ to make them an example.
"Does that sit right with you?" TJ asked, munching on their sandwich. They'd been working since around 8am that morning, and they couldn't eat when they had clients in, unless it was a day session and they fit in a lunch break, so this really hit the spot. "Who shoots a man and doesn't even get arrested? How do they get their name kept outta the reports anyway? If I didn't already know the cops in this town were dirtier than a horse's ass, this would confirm it." TJ shook their head, scoffing at the thought. "I figure if anyone can find the name, it's you."

Jerk Ford AU: Hate Speeches
Having had at least two hate clubs dedicating to hating and/or wanting to end him, even across the multiverse itself, Jerk Ford has dealt with haters from all walks of life and occupations. All sorts of angry mobs, bounty hunters, contract killers, government officials, assassins, and Stan Twins alts have faced him.
However, this happens so often that a lot of encounters tend to blur together regardless of who, what, when, where, how, and how many, happen to be angrily chasing, shooting at, stabbing, or throwing a live crab at him this time.
He's heard everything that could be said to him about his misconduct and misbehaviour by the time he finally goes back to his home dimension.
Bounty Hunter: I'm here to stop your senseless frenzy of jackassery.
Jerk Ford: Ninety-two.
Bounty Hunter: This has gone on for too long. And now, you're going to pay.
Jerk Ford: Three hundred and fifty-five.
Bounty Hunter: I am-, I-. What are you...?
Jerk Ford: No, go on. Don't mind me.
Bounty Hunter: And I am the one who will stop you-.
Jerk Ford: Four hundred and nineteen.
Bounty Hunter: That's-. What the hell are you doing?!
Jerk Ford: I hear these hate speeches so often, I keep a mental list of how many times I've heard certain lines.
Bounty Hunter: I'm so sick of your shit!
Jerk Ford: One thousand two hundred and fifty seven.
Bounty Hunter: You-! You insane bastard.
Jerk Ford: One hundred and ninety.
Bounty Hunter: Yeah? Well, uh, I'm going to... F**K YOUR FACE!
Jerk Ford, sarcastic: Oh, ouch.
Jerk Ford:
Jerk Ford: Twelve.

Jennifer Bendery at HuffPost:
WASHINGTON ― With literally minutes left in his presidency, Joe Biden on Monday granted clemency to Leonard Peltier, the ailing Native American rights activist whom the U.S. government put in prison nearly 50 years ago after a trial riddled with misconduct and lies. In a statement as President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration was underway, Biden announced he is “commuting the life sentence imposed on Leonard Peltier so that he serves the remainder of his sentence in home confinement.” Peltier has been in prison ever since the federal government accused him of murdering two FBI agents in a 1975 shoot-out on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. There was never evidence that Peltier committed a crime, and the U.S. government never did figure out who shot those agents. But federal officials needed someone to take the fall. The FBI had just lost two agents, and Peltier’s co-defendants were all acquitted based on self-defense. So, Peltier became their guy. His trial was rife with misconduct. The FBI threatened and coerced witnesses into lying. Federal prosecutors hid evidence that exonerated Peltier. A juror acknowledged on the second day of the trial that she had “prejudice against Indians,” but she was kept on anyway.
The government’s case fell apart after these revelations, so it simply revised its charges against Peltier to “aiding and abetting” whoever did kill the agents ― based entirely on the fact that he was one of dozens of people present when the shoot-out took place. Peltier was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive life terms. Peltier, now 80, has maintained his innocence the entire time he’s been in prison, which has almost certainly led to him being denied parole. He’s mostly blind and uses a walker to get around. Due to frequent lockdowns at his maximum security prison in Florida, he’s spent most of his later years confined to inches of space in a cell. His serious health problems include diabetes, which sent him to the hospital in July with “open wounds and tissue death on his toes and feet,” per the Lakota Times. He was hospitalized again in October.
President Joe Biden (D), in one of his last acts, granted clemency to the unjustifiably imprisoned Leonard Peltier by commuting his life imprisonment to home confinement.

Shaw pack hockey head cannons
bc its playoff season and I'm nervous
David
Defensive center - Shoots right
Like, really defensive, his forecheck is insane
Started off as a D man but he's such a puck hound (get it) coach moved him up to a forward
Consistently on the PK unit
Wears 87 for the year the Shaw pack was established
Captain Junior and Senior year, 2 playoff runs and 1 Championship Win while he played
Loves to play road hockey with the some of the younger wolves in the pack
Gabe was a die hard kings fan so David followed in his footsteps
Asher
Left Winger -Shoots left
You wanna talk about speed? Ash is your guy
The go to player for zone entries and face offs
Plays the left to David's center
Number 93 for his birth year
Always drives the best power play unit on the team with his speed and precision
Alternate Captain throughout most of Junior and Senior year
Unfortunately he can be a bit over zealous with his stick and gets penalties for high sticking and tripping often
Watched Mighty Ducks as a kid so now he's a Ducks fan for life
Milo
Defense - Shoots Left
Fast reflexes so coach wanted to make him a goalie at first, but he was a little too short to block
Always reliable to try to take the puck away or add traffic in front of the net (Marie had to heal a lot of bruises)
He's a little bit slower than David but also sooo annoying with how defensive he is
Does everything in his power to take the puck away like wasp buzzing around and will badger the hell out of anyone in a 50 foot radius
Wanted 93 too but Asher took it, uses 7 instead because he thinks its lucky
Became an Alternate Captain senior year
Grew up a Rangers fan and David always gives him shit for it
Darlin'
Defense
Also a very strict enforcer
No touch my guys
Serves the most penalty minutes of the whole team, mostly for fighting or roughing and a few 10 minute misconducts every season
Moved a lot as a kid so grew up following many teams, joining kids leagues whenever the city had one
When they moved to Dahlia and Gabe found out they were interested in hockey, he made sure to point as other members of the Shaw pack were apart of the DAMN team and encouraged them to join
Worked as a way to get out some of their aggression growing up
Picked a random number when they first joined, assuming they'd be moving again anyways
Nowadays, they don't play nearly as aggressively whenever David starts up a game of road hockey (and they always sweet talk Sam into playing goalie), showing younger wolves how to do defensive plays

Whumpee is a royal offspring, taken hostage from the harbour by enemy marine troops as part of a peace treaty. From their loaded ship, the troops eye the harbour from a distance, in case an opportunity arises.
Imagine all the whump…
Whumpee is treated like a cabin boy, bending to the crew’s every whim
The ship is too far offshore that whumpee cannot possibly escape, despite being able to see their castle from the small hole in their closet
Whumpee choking and splashing on water as they’re tagged alongside the boat (for fun), leashed to the deck by coarse ropes
Being dragged out of the sea, water fluttering from whumpee’s eyelashes; they’re a shivering mess
Left collapsed on the deck until dawn. Whumpee blinks at the sky’s pink and orange hues through lidded eyes. Throw in a flying seagull or two to symbolise freedom
“Allies” (whumpee’s guardian, boss, team etc) anger the troops in some way, so they take it out on whumpee. e.g., The sleep-deprived whumpee notices the crew eyeing them weirdly while they’re serving breakfest. They hear rumours of “a turn of events”. Moments later, whumpee is called to the bridge of the ship where the captain awaits. They drag their trembling selves up and kneel before the captain for mercy and a time to explain their allies’ misconduct, but before they can utter a single “please”, the captain shoots their thigh.
Whumpee gasping with tears in their eyes as they bleed out in front of everybody. Another bang and scalding hot pain courses through their shoulder
Whumpee looks up at passing crew members with imploring eyes, but most look away. Some chuckle and even get a few kicks in
Later, whumpee is made to clean the puddle of blood they made. The crew laugh at how they stumble around and try to stand up by leaning on the mop

you don’t suppose pepsico decided to start distancing itself from gamer culture because of well, to put it lightly the last few years of major gamer streamer misconduct? By which I mean the pedophilia and nazi shit that made it to mainstream news.
Gamers have never had an upstanding reputation. IDK what's going on in the world of streaming, but back in the 2000s "gamer" called to mind 12 year olds virtually shooting eachother while shouting out every expletive known to man. So I don't think streamers are the reason.
That's the short answer, but people seem to like hearing my thoughts on consumer aesthetics on here, so I'll rant a bit more on the subject.
Regardless of how ethical gamers were viewed as in the 2000s-2010s, products like axe, 5 gum, and mountain dew exploded when targeting them as a demographic. It served as kind of a dark, edgy inversion of the sterile white apple aesthetic that dominated the mainstream, and we got some genuinely cool branding out of it.
Tumblr media
Up until recently this had naturally evolved into a sort of loud, maximalism, trading its subdued, serious edge for something more colorful and ironic. It's practically a parody of edge, but it's so fun and zany it's hard to dislike this direction.
Tumblr media
I really thought that THIS style would embody the 2020s, that this paired with things like Fortnite and blindbox toys would kind of characterize the era for its distracting, vapid, disposable, post-postmodern irony. This has all felt like a logical reaction to the sterility of 2010s design.
However, now it seems we're taking an abrupt U turn into a sort of conservative, retro 70s throwback era of design. It seems like corporations are trying to appeal more to boomers and hipsters in an attempt to broaden their appeal. These rebrands strike me as decisions made out of fear, corporations retreating into their shells.
Tumblr media
I don't know if this is WORSE than the sterile minimalism of the 2010s but I DEFINITELY hate it.
So, this devolution is likely not due to controversies with gamers specifically, but more like an attempt to reject modernity and revert back to what's "safe" during uncertain times. I think corporations now are generally trying to seem more "evergreen" and "timeless" within an increasingly unstable corporate landscape and hypercritical social culture. This comes at the sacrifice of their edge and ambition to evolve.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
December 23, 2024
Heather Cox Richardson
Dec 24, 2024
Today the House Ethics Committee released its report on its investigation of widely reported allegations that while in office, former representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) had engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, shared inappropriate videos on the House floor, misused state records, diverted campaign funds for his own use, and accepted a bribe or an impermissible gift.
The report says that the committee found “substantial evidence” that Gaetz had, in fact, “regularly paid women for engaging in sexual activity with him”; “engaged in sexual activity with a 17-year-old girl”; “used or possessed illegal drugs, including cocaine and ecstasy, on multiple occasions”; “accepted gifts…in excess of permissible amounts”; arranged official help for one of his sexual partners, whom he falsely identified to the State Department as a constituent, in getting a passport; tried to obstruct the committee’s investigation; and “acted in a manner that reflects discreditably upon the House.”
The committee concluded that “there was substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules, state and federal laws, and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, acceptance of impermissible gifts, the provision of special favors and privileges, and obstruction of Congress.”
It “did not find sufficient evidence to conclude that Representative Gaetz violated the federal sex trafficking statute. Although Representative Gaetz did cause the transportation of women across state lines for purposes of commercial sex, the Committee did not find evidence that any of those women were under 18 at the time of travel.”
Gaetz is a staunch ally of President-elect Donald Trump, who tried to put Gaetz in charge of the Justice Department. That appointment would have him responsible for law enforcement across the United States. House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) tried hard to keep the report hidden once Trump had tapped Gaetz for attorney general, saying he “strongly request[ed] that the Ethics Committee not issue the report.”
The Ethics Committee at first deadlocked over releasing it, but Andrew Solender of Axios reported today that two Republicans on the committee, Representative Dave Joyce (R-OH) and Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), switched their votes to join the Democrats supporting the release of the report.
Ethics Committee chair Michael Guest (R-MS) and Representatives Michelle Fischbach (R-MN) and John Rutherford (R-FL) all opposed releasing the report, saying that they lost jurisdiction after Gaetz resigned, which he did when Trump announced his intention of putting him in the office of attorney general. In their comments in the report, they said they “do not challenge the Committee’s findings” but object to their disclosure.
Republican Party leaders were willing to put a man their own committee says likely violated state and federal laws into the position of the nation’s highest law enforcement officer. That scenario reflects the extraordinary danger of a country in which one party’s supporters see themselves as the country’s only legitimate governing party.
In 1970, President Richard M. Nixon’s team worried that the Republican Party would hemorrhage voters in the upcoming midterm elections. That spring, Nixon announced that rather than ending the Vietnam War, he had sent ground troops into Vietnam’s neighbor Cambodia. In the protests that followed, members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd at Kent State University, killing four protesters. Nixon’s clumsy suggestion that the protesters were responsible for the shooting began to turn middle-class white Americans, his key demographic, against him.
So Nixon’s advisors turned to a strategy they called “positive polarization.” They believed that dividing the country was a positive development because it stoked the anger they needed to get their voters to turn out. They deliberately turned against what they called “the media, the left, [and] the liberal academic community,” drawing voters to Nixon by accusing their opponents of being lazy, dangerous, and anti-American.
This polarization became a key technique of the Republican Party in the Reagan years, when talk radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh began to fill the airwaves with attacks on “feminazis,” liberals, and Black Americans who they claimed were trying to impose socialism on America. By 1990, a Republican group associated with then-representative Newt Gingrich (R-GA) compiled a list of words for Republican candidates to use when talking about Democrats. They included “decay,” “sick,” “greed,” “corruption, “radical,” and “traitor.” In contrast, candidates were encouraged to refer to Republicans using words like “opportunity,” “courage,” “principle(d),” “caring,” and “peace.”
Over the past thirty years, Republicans appear to have come to believe that nothing is more important than making sure Republicans control the government. Less competition has given rise to states like Florida that are essentially controlled by the Republicans. This, in turn, means there is very little oversight of the party’s lawmakers, making obviously problematic candidates able to survive far longer than they would if there were opposition to highlight poor behavior.
It also means that party members appear willing to overlook deeply problematic behavior in their own lawmakers, who come to feel immune, while attacking Democrats for what Republicans claim is the same behavior. Notably, in February of this year, in a closed hearing before the House Oversight Committee, Gaetz badgered President Biden’s son Hunter over his drug use. Hunter Biden responded that he had been “absolutely transparent” about his drug use and asked: “What does that have to do with whether or not you're going to go forward with an impeachment of my father other than to simply try to embarrass me?”
The answer is that while the drug use of private citizen Hunter Biden did not affect the U.S. government, the drug use of congressmember Matt Gaetz did. In a healthy political system, political opposition would have called out his behavior long before he was tapped to become one of the most important figures in the government.
Crucially, in such a system, state law enforcement would have pursued Gaetz, and his own party would have dropped him like a hot potato long before it had to face commentary like that of progressive journalist Brian Tyler Cohen, who today wrote: “Congratulations to Mike Johnson for trying to pressure the House Ethics Committee into burying a report that found the then-nominee for attorney general had engaged in sexual activity with a minor. Party of Family Values, am I right?”
The Republicans’ determination to hold on to the government at all costs showed in a different story that broke this weekend. Representative Kay Granger (R-TX) has been absent from Congress since midsummer. On Sunday, Carlos Turcios of the Dallas Express reported that he found the 81-year-old representative in a memory care and assisted living home. In the months since she went missing, her staff continued to submit material to the Congressional Record, making it look like she was still active.
Chad Pergram of the Fox News Channel reported that a senior Republican source explained why Granger retained her seat despite her incapacity. Referring to what Pergram called “the paper-thin [Republican] House majority,” the source said: “Frankly, we needed the numbers.”
Granger’s condition has reignited the national conversation about the age and capacity of our lawmakers, an issue very much on the table for the 78-year-old president-elect, whose own behavior has been erratic for a while now.
On Sunday, Trump spoke at Turning Point’s AmericaFest in Phoenix, where, as Aaron Rupar of Public Notice recorded, he entered as if he were at a professional wrestling event. He proceeded to deliver a speech much like his campaign speeches.
It had an important new element in it, though, that he had pioneered on social media the night before. He claimed that Panama is not treating the U.S. well, and threatened that he will “demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America in full, quickly, and without question.” On Sunday he posted on social media that he wants Greenland too. “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
Panama’s president, José Raúl Mulino, responded that “every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent zones is part of Panama, and it will continue to be. Our country’s sovereignty and independence are not negotiable.” Prime Minister Mute B. Egede of Greenland said: “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”
To my knowledge, Trump never mentioned taking the Panama Canal or Greenland during the campaign, and such dramatic action will likely undermine the principle that countries can’t just take over weaker neighbors. This principle is central to the United Nations, which holds that territorial integrity and sovereignty are “sacrosanct” and that members “shall refrain…from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.” David Sanger and Lisa Friedman of the New York Times note that Trump’s aggression “reflects the instincts of a real estate developer who suddenly has the power of the world’s largest military to back up his negotiating strategy.”
In a healthy political system, pronouncements from an elderly president-elect that could upend 80 years of foreign policy would spark significant discussion from all quarters.
