Do you know if there's a reason why DR2 doesn't have any "intelligent character" like DR1 and V3 do? It has a protagonist (obviously) and someone in the rival / antagonist archetype (Nagito), so why is it missing someone in the "helpful person that suggests things and moves trials forward" archetype?

Monokuma says something that kinda makes it sound like it was supposed to be Chiaki but she never actually says or does anything smart. Do you think maybe they changed the plans for the story?

Mod Box: let’s reword “intelligent character” to something more like a “plot device” type character. Now, I mean “plot device” in the way of saying this character’s purpose only propels the plot by their dialogue. See how that can change characters like Chiaki and Shuuichi? I don’t mean to say that these are their only roles in these titles, but when you have a lot of eccentric characters, you notice that these two are a little flat in comparison, whether it be by their personality itself that lends to that delivery or if they’re only just exactly saying the words you need to hear for the trial to go on.

Mod Box: SDR2 can suffer from a few points and segments running a little bit too long, and conveniently, Chiaki will chime in with what you, or the class needs to hear. This might not be true for every part that runs too long, but it’s definitely a reoccurring event throughout your time. Doing or saying anything particularly smart? You get a feel that some things were either planned to run for the rest of the game or if this was put in as they went along, no game development is really ever actually so linear from, start to end…

Mod Box: I have to kind of wonder what you mean on "anything smart". Think on the characters you want to talk about. There's both limitations to the character as they were written, and limitations to what the director, or writers can put together based on their vision. These are two separate things that work in flux to end up with the result you seem to get out of this. What do I mean by that? I'm saying that it's easy to read a character's traits on face value, this is what they were written to be, and then there is limitations set by the creators' depth. This isn't a jab at anything or anyone, but it asks you to really understand what they were going for. It asks you to take a look again and really gauge if there is more by dialogue or the character's course of action. I can point out screenshots and things that I feel like can give anyone the "intelligence" you're asking for but I think you're expecting a character to be labelled as a brainiac, right?

Mod Box: Either way, I have to agree, I think a lot of these titles begin to touch surface on ideas and gimmicks that never get true spotlight because of the limitations in place. From being delegated by the publishers to shorten or cut content, to being unable to code and depict things how you'd like (comes with time and skill on the program worked with), or even just scrapping things on your own because you ultimately decided it doesn't work out too well… Creating anything comes with burdens, challenges, and it is sometimes disappointing. But to be able to make anything at all is still its own joy. I hope this answers this okay cause I kinda wanted to see about writing this without direct images.

You sighed with contentment as Shuichi tenderly stroked your hair. It had been months since he had to punish you last, and this was your reward for good behavior. You snuggled up into his side and felt Shuichi start calmly braiding your hair. Having this kind of treatment so late at night was very soothing!

"I don't understand..." he suddenly said out of nowhere. You looked up at him curiously, not understanding what he meant. Was he upset? Were you about to be punished again? Noting your confusion, he continued on. "I don't understand how someone could be this perfect..."

"I'm not all that," you replied softly. In your heart, you were average. There was nothing special about you. And yet, the Ultimate Detective had somehow fallen head-over-heels in love with you. Even to the point to crack his sanity. If anything, you were the one who didn't understand. "Honestly, I'm not even sure why you like me this much. There's nothing that great about me."

"That's a lie," he answered immediately, nearly cutting you off. His expression was serious, but not angry. Good. You never liked it when he was angry. It would always be hellish for you. "You're the most perfect thing on Earth. You're the fairest of the fair. And if anyone ever says otherwise, let me know and I'll cut their tongues off and feed it to them. Literally."

You knew he wasn't kidding. You had seen it twice before. Twice when you saw a whole new side of Saihara. And although he's never said he'd do that to you, the looming threat was there. You shuddered, and he felt your shivering in his arms.

"I mean it," he clarifies. His voice remains calm, although slightly elevated. You winced at this, scared of what that means. To your surprise, you received a gentle kiss on your forehead. "I'd do anything for you."

"Anything?" you questioned. What did that mean? Did he really mean "anything"? Or did he mean "anything within reason"? It was a fair question to ask, and he knew that. However, considering the fact that you had driven his sanity to the point of no return, it should've been obvious what he meant by that, and you mentally cursed yourself for even asking. You were simply trying to fill the silence with some verbal conversation, even if it made no sense. "Like, anything-anything?"

"Of course, anything-anything," Shuichi replies with a smile. His hand came to a halt in your hair, pulling your face up by your chin to gaze into his eyes. Then his expression turned serious. "If you want me to beg, I'll beg for you. If you want me to kill, I'll kill for you. If you want me to die, I'll die for you. And that's the absolute truth."

"Don't go dying on me now," you replied with a soft giggle. You were truthful in that statement, though. You loved him, didn't you? That was how you were able to avoid punishment for so long, right? Yeah... Yeah, that had to be it! You were in love with Shuichi! Just as he was in love with you! "Mm... Shu-Shu... Can we sleep?"

"Go ahead," Shuichi agreed, kissing your forehead with a soft chuckle. "Get some rest, My Love. I'll be here in the morning or whenever you wake up. You know I'd never leave without you."

And so you did. You slept, snoring softly on his chest. Shuichi watched you for hours. The way your chest rose and fell... The way your breathing evened out as you lost consciousness... How cute you looked, all cuddled up to him for warmth...

It was exhilarating. He could sit and watch you sleep for hours. Then again, he had an entire photo collection for that. It couldn't hurt to add one more, though...

⪼ At first, of course, he’d detect something was up with your music taste, but not in a bad way! ⪼ Before you two got together, you’d always avoid answering honestly about your favorite type of music. ⪼ I’m sure Kokichi or Miu would tease you about it, getting very close, but of course, you wouldn’t admit it. ⪼ Though, now that you two are together, I can see Shuichi pressuring you a little bit, trying to find out why you’re so adamant about hiding it. ⪼ He finds out while you’re listening to some on your own, humming along, and keeping time. ⪼ Shuichi taps you on your shoulder, which makes you jump, and embarrasses you greatly. ⪼ “Ah, sorry, S/O! I didn’t mean to scare you or anything. I just couldn’t help but notice how happy you were. Is that opera?” ⪼ Reluctantly, you agree, since the jig is up, but he reassures you that he isn’t judging! In fact, he asks if he can listen with you. ⪼ The two of you sit side-by-side, with him letting you rant about each song that comes and goes. ⪼ He thinks it’s impressive how the singers can project their voices so well!

⪼ When you two got together, Rantaro thinks of it as a little guessing game between the two of you, no matter where the two of you travel to. ⪼ Every so often, he gives a guess, which is always wrong. ⪼ He’s always a good sport about it, though sometimes he gets a little huffy about guessing wrong. ⪼ He’s an adventurer, dammit! He makes a point to learn about everywhere he goes! How can he not get it! ⪼ Rantaro still thinks it’s fun, though. ⪼ However, he finally guesses right, as you make a trip to Italy! I feel so bad for everyone else in my inbox right now cause this was like, one of the only asks I felt inspired to write for in weeks so I took it and ran- But this is a really cool idea! I’m not sure how people will take my small description of pregame!Shuichi, maybe another day I’ll go more in depth about him, but I hope you enjoy! Shuichi blinked his eyes slowly, before taking a big breath- like he’d been deprived of air for such a long time- and above him was a blank ceiling with a single light at it. He was confused, at most- last thing he remembered was exiting the fictional reality of Danganronpa with Maki and Himiko.

Maki and Himiko.. He sat up quickly, now worried about where they were. Were they next to him, had they wound up in different locations..? 

He found himself in something that, if he had to guess, it looked like an actor’s dressing room. Considering the situation he had been in, he wasn’t necessarily too surprised. What did surprise him was the person sitting in the room with him, relaxed in the chair in front of a cliché mirror filled with lights.

“O-Oh, Shuma- Shuichi!” They blinked awake, clearly tired, as if they’d been waiting in that chair for a while.

“I- uhm.. Where am I?” He asked curiously as he looked down at himself. His cap was on his head again, and instead of that usual outfit he had worn in the game, it had been replaced with some sort of high school uniform he didn’t really recognize. 

“It’s.. sort of like a backstage.. Like an actor’s dressing room, kinda thing. I’m not too sure myself, they didn’t tell me much..” The person trailed off as they stood up and approached the surface Shuichi had been lying on- which he realized was some kind of couch- a one slow step at a time, as if to not frighten him. 

“Okay..” Shuichi thought for a second as he got his bearings. “Why.. am I here?”

“You ended Danganronpa.” They smile at him. “So since everyone exited that world, you came back here. And as far as I know, I’m here to help you gain back your memories of the real world.. Since I knew you before.” They chuckle under their breath a bit nervously, rubbing their arm and avoiding eye contact.

“Everyone?” Shuichi asks, perking up. “Even.. even those who died?” 

They sigh, seemingly disappointed. “I-I’m not sure. I know you, Maki, and Himiko are back..” They took a second to breathe. “But I would assume that people like Kaede and Kaito are back, yeah. But I wasn’t allowed access to anywhere but here, so I don’t know.” 

“Allowed… access?”

They took a seat next to Shuichi as he sat up properly on the couch. “Team Danganronpa, right? I don’t know why but they’re still really secretive of everything.. So someone guided me to this room and said to wait till you woke up, cause I’d be taking you home.” 

“Taking me home?” Shuichi asks. “How did I… know you, before the game?” 

They laugh nervously, looking towards the other side of the room. “I-I’m- well, I was, I guess- your s/o.”

Shuichi’s face lit up bright red. He had an s/o? Well, he supposed that’s why they looked familiar.. And a tad attractive… he didn’t think that, no, shut up, that didn’t happen- “O-oh! I-I’m sorry..” 

He took a second to breathe. He had really left behind an s/o, just for the game..? What was he like? ..what was this world like? 

“Don’t worry about it!” They looked back at him, smiling, even if their face was turning warm and it looked like they were about to cry out of glossy, pretty eyes. “I can’t blame you. But we’re both here now, so I mean.. Enjoy what I can, y’know? Oh! You.. probably forgot, but my name is (Y/N).” 

“(Y/N)...” He repeated in a low tone, thinking to himself.. “I like your name.” He gives them a small smile, trying to be reassuring at the least. He couldn’t help but feel guilty.. He had left behind such a selfless and caring person.. For what? Lifelong trauma and potential survivors guilt?  

He can’t help but think of Kaede, and wonder if he would’ve felt different- if things would’ve been different- if he had remembered this person, and known he had someone so important waiting for him. 

They let out  a small sniffle, which scares Shuichi slightly- had he done something wrong? “Ah- sorry!” They apologize, and despite the tears they’re wiping away, they’re smiling. “I just- that’s the same thing you had said when we first met, haha..” 

“I-It’s okay!” Shuichi stutters, turning to them. “D-Don’t worry about it..” he trails off.

They take a second to recollect themself. “Is there anything you wanna know? About before you entered the game?” They ask, once they’ve calmed down enough and momentarily stopped their tears.

“..What was I like, before everything?” He asks. “What were… what were we like?” 

They chuckle. “You were really sweet, and always nervous.. You got so nervous, you always asked me before you even held my hand or hugged me. You call me sweetheart and you were such a huge fan of murder mysteries, and detective stories..” They finally make  the will to make eye contact with Shuichi. “Not much changed. And I had given you that hat, and you always wore it.” 

Shuichi watches them as they talk, and wonders how lucky he was that past him had scored some so.. Amazing. It’s almost a habit when he asks; “D-Do you mind if I hug you?” And for a second he doesn’t even realize what he said until they sniffle, on the verge of crying again.

“Y-Yeah.” They smile, and as Shuichi pulls them in albeit with hesitation, he can’t help but feel like he belonged in their arms. Warm and welcoming, as if despite how much time had passed and how everything had happened, they were still there and they still loved him, no matter what. The mind forgot, but the subconscious remembered.

“I-I was so scared..” They sniffle, face buried in the crux of his neck as he rests his hands on their back, allowing them to cry. “I-If you had died, in the game, e-even if I had known it was fictional, I don't know what I would’ve done.. I-I mean, I- just.. Everything.. You went through, and I-I felt so bad, g-god I spent ni-nights just..” 

(Y/N) entirely melted in his arms, letting everything go and finally spilling about it all, the fear they had felt, how they spent more time than they’d admit to others just crying because of what had happened and how bad they felt, and all in the end.. 

“H-Hey, it’s okay..” Shuichi comforted, and this entire scenario felt out of character but somewhere he knew that this is what was meant to happen. That, even if he had forgotten, and everything had changed, here was someone who cared for him and loved him, and in the end no matter what happened that when it was over they would be there. “I-I’m here now, aren’t I-I, sweetheart..?”

 In his heart he was worried and wondering about everyone else in the game, those people who had suffered, that had died, that had survived, and the thought of if they’d still be the same or if anything had really changed lingered, but for a fleeting moment he didn’t mind staying right here.

It was grounding, in a world where it felt like he knew nothing and nowhere to go, where everything was wildly different from what he knew, to know someone was there, and that he was there for that someone, and that things would get better.

- Would be hella proud, suuper happy, maybe a little hyper

- And very! Excited!! Hes finally getting a baby with u like????!?!?????

- His eyes are starting to get watery when he got to see + hold the child for the first time

- Is probs the most happiest person out there cause he now has 2 people he can love with all his heart

Ouma Kokichi

- Cried since u told him ure expecting a baby

- But like tears of happiness cause he loves u so much and now an baby and its just.. whoa!!

- And he absolutely cant shut up about how excited he is aswell

- Would already buy all the stuff u guys need for the baby: Clothing, crib, an dresser, more clothing, etc.-->also, u two did it in like the next day of ur announcement

- probs cry as much as the baby when the child-birth is happening

- Isnt able to get children, so u guys are adopting one!

- Cant believe its happening because honestly, he was really worried about the fact that he wasnt able to make children with u

- But now hes getting an child! Yes, hes happy, but.. a little concerned though

- He is scared his child wouldnt love him + just having an child in general is a very big step, cause u cant put urself in the first place anymore

- But when he got to see the child for the first time, it was so special to him!!

- Would be suprised, at first!!

- Like he would make ( this face ), but like more intentse

- And would also think about all the stories hes gonna tell the baby, especially when he/she s about to go sleep!!

- Hes holding ur hand through the whole childbirth, and its suprising hes being so calm even in that sort of situation

- Would take his mask of when he gets to hold the baby for the first time, and would smile at him/her like u cant even compare how lovelly his smile d be

Rantarou Amami

- Would embrace u while smiling like hes an kid hearing his parents are gonna take him to mcdonalds

- Keeps telling u how happy and excited he is!

- Its really cute cause hed call u at random moments when he gets ideas for the names u could give the baby or other stuff involved with the baby

- He promised hed be with u when the childbirth is happening, he did try it, but unfortunally he passed out :’^D

- When Amami gets to hold the baby hed be like quiet, but when u looked at him he has such an loving smile on his face

Shuuichi Saihara

- Last time u never saw him this happy was at ur marriage tbh

- Would tell his whole family hes going to be a dad and would take pics of u and ur growing belly every week

- Would search up information about what to do on each week of ur pregnancy or lets say it in sort: he gon take real good care of u :’)

- loves u loves u loves u loves u loves u and is hella excited

- Was more stressed at the childs-birthing than u omg

- Looked at the baby like its was best treasure he had ever seen

Gonta Gokuhara

- Would be jumping and shouting out of happiness!!

- It was this man his dream to become a father, and the moment u told it to him, u could see more sparkles appear in his eyes like asfghjkl

- Would be taking care of u like a proffesional, hed take care of all the big things so u can mostly relax and take it slow

- Wouldnt look when u were about to give birth to ur baby but when it was done hed rush into the room as fast as he could

- The baby s name would get a little reference to something he loves: insects or nature

Ryouma Hoshi

- poor guy was shook af

- But after that hed embraces u + start talking in spanish out of shook-ness (lets imagine hes 40% spanish ok)

- Buying clothing for the baby isnt that hard (cuz id be basically the same height as Hoshi later or sooner anyways)

- Supports u and is always concerned if things will get ‘too much’ for u

- would be with u when ur gon give birth to the baby and hed also hold ur hand the whole time through it (and he good in dat peptalk)

- the moment he held the baby for the first time he realized that it was the most special moment of his life
