I got a cold and watched that Jenny Nicholson video about the Star Wars hotel (it's very good) and fully lost my mind: even after experiencing a comprehensive four-hour deconstruction of why it didn't work for Star Wars, I still think a version of this would absolutely work for Star Trek. Take my hand and walk with me on my journey into madness, where I have infinite money, talent, and team to make it all happen!!
Overall vibe
If you want to make a hotel/resort experience that takes place inside a fake spaceship, I still think Star Trek is the way to go: so much of Star Trek takes place on ships, and we've seen the rooms are pretty nice!! Like the Star Wars one, my Star Trek hotel is also a simulated starship, but with better rooms and more fun stuff to do.
Are you ready for this shit
Tumblr media
Can you tell I drew this myself
You'll arrive at Farpoint Station,* where the concierge checks you in and your luggage gets whisked away by station staff. Gift shop's also here. When you're checked in and ready to head to your room, you're brought to one of several transporter rooms. If you never went to the Star Trek Experience at the Vegas Hilton when it was active, I am truly sorry for you, because they had a ride whose boarding process included getting beamed away: you and your pals were herded into a zone where you were clearly meant to board a run-of-the-mill 20th-century simulator ride, and then there were jets of mist and a sound and suddenly you were in a transporter room on board the goddamn USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D. It was fucking magical and I never, ever want it explained to me. Anyway, that's what happens to you at my Star Trek hotel: you step onto a transporter pad and get beamed from Farpoint to a Galaxy-class Federation starship. Exit the transporter room and walk down the ship's corridor to take the turbolifts to Cargo Bay 1, where a "temporary muster point" has been set up (this is where the guest services desks will be), or just follow the lit-up companel signs to your cabin. Yes, it will look like guest quarters aboard the Enterprise-D, more or less — maybe a little smaller — but it'll have the carpet, the plant, the glass coffee table, and most importantly a window that looks out into space.
Or!!! If you booked the resort, keep heading down the hallway and take another turbolift to a different section of the ship where the holodeck entrances are. The holodecks, naturally, are running a Risa program, so you walk through the doors and under the arch and suddenly you're outdoors looking at a beautiful landscape with a pool and whatnot, plus the resort accommodations where the more conventional fancy rooms are, and also the restaurants and entertainment venues, all themed. There's a Quark's. There's a Klingon bar and grill. A Bolian salon/spa. Talaxian arcade?? Nausicaan axe-throwing pit?!?! Come on!!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
Here, have a floor plan
Key learnings
Two things stuck out to me that the Star Wars hotel fucked up that I think the Star Trek version can do better:
🤷‍♀️ LARP too complicated: Give 'em credit where it's due, the Star Wars hotel fucking swung for the fences trying to make a multi-hero story guests could integrate with, but it just didn't work. Technical failures! Possible conceptual flaws! Too much stuff packed into the schedule!
The fix: Just make it mostly a hotel most of the time. One or two weekends a month, there's a two-day fully-immersive LARP adventure that people explicitly book separately, and it's more expensive (more on that later). But at all times, hotel staff will be in uniform with division colors that make sense: concierge and guest relations in red, support and janitorial in gold, teal for any medical personnel. I think that means the people working in food services have to wear that plaid/vest combo the Ten-Forward staff have on, but there are certainly worse outfits.
🌴 No resort: The food at the Star Wars hotel was good, but there was no pool and no other luxury resort type stuff to do. It didn't sound relaxing.
The fix: Putting an actual resort in the Star Trek hotel under the guise of a permanently-running Risan holodeck program. The sheer elegance of it!! When the weather is bad, hotel staff in gold uniforms can make apologetic comments about how the sim's malfunctioning.
Roleplay though
People are going to want to stay onboard the ship. That's good! The thing about the ship cabins is you can build them in maybe two semicircular layers (the rooms will need to be curved because these are quarters onboard the saucer section, naturally) and just bury them underground. They don't need real windows — you're putting screens in that'll show a space view, especially when the ship goes to warp and you can see those rainbow trails. Inside the semicircle there's a lot of space where you can put the other, bigger sets: the bridge, main engineering, Ten-Forward, etc. None of those have real windows either, and also I don't think it matters where you put them physically: just stick a pretend turbolift in front of all the entrances and make guests take those whenever they need to go there! One thing we're also doing is putting little hidden speakers everywhere that put out a small amount of shipboard white noise; it may not even be noticeable on a conscious level, but it'll be there and it'll be soothing. This speaker network is also a great way to make an actual announcement if there's a real park emergency.
During most of the month, I think the bridge and main engineering are mostly just photo ops — maybe you have to book a timeslot? Just so you're guaranteed some time with just you and your buddies? But I also think there should be opportunities for what I'm going to call mini-LARPing: you and your pals can book an hour-long session and the staff trains and then runs you through a short scenario. If you've ever played Artemis or the actual Star Trek VR bridge crew game they put out a while ago, you know where I'm going with this: for however long, you and your friends are now the crew of a genuine-ass Federation starship trying to survive a battle! It's fuckin' Kobayashi Maru time, motherfuckers!! Everyone gets their own station! Lights flicker! Mist shoots out of stuff! The whole bridge shakes! There might be a warp core problem — better call down to main engineering! Whoever's down there gets escape room-style minigames and puzzles to work out and help their shipmates. At some point — and this will happen in every run of every scenario — there'll be a very mist-forward "coolant leak" near the warp core that forces whoever's in the room to duck and roll beneath a descending garage-style blast door before heading up to the bridge to activate their station up there; bonus points if the player can work in a "We lost a lot of good people down there, Captain." Maybe there's an actor in makeup who menaces the crew on the main viewer from time to time (pick beforehand from a list of villains! want to fight Klingons? Romulans? a rogue Borg tactical sphere? etc). Can you see it? I can see it, and it fucking rules.
I must at this point mention that in my world, you can buy an add-on where a camera crew joins you, and they cut up the footage afterward to make you and your pals your very own mini-episode. Yes the editing and post-production are expensive and time-consuming; I'm creating jobs here!!!! Maybe …… okay, hear me out: there's an array of hidden fixed cameras and microphones built discreetly into the set, and also players are issued a combadge with an individual RFID tracker that pings the cams and mics, so they only save footage when a player comes close. After the players are done, a machine algorithm uses the data gathered to assemble a rough timeline of each player's material and create a draft movie that a human editor can pick up and fine-tune. Yeah?? When you check out, you get handed a USB drive that looks like an isolinear chip with your mini movie on it, and maybe another one with all the raw footage just in case you're feeling ambitious!!!!
For one or two other weekends during every month, there's a heavily advertised, much more involved, and way spendier LARP for people who really want to get into it. It takes place over two days. There are lots more actors portraying characters necessary for the plot/gameplay. Don't bother packing for the daytime: all players are issued a uniform they get to keep afterward. Do I have any details on the scenario or RP? I do not. But I fully believe it's possible to construct something you could run over the course of a weekend that would keep a hundred paying guests occupied, amused, and delighted, provided you have a truly ridiculous amount of money and people, which I do because this is utter fantasyland.
Also it probably won't cost six grand. Probably??
Let's gooooooooooooo
The rest of the time — and I cannot stress this enough — the Star Trek hotel is just a very heavily and specifically themed all-inclusive resort that has nice, fancy rooms and luxury amenities plus bookable ship cabins and opportunities for photo shoots or quick one-shot roleplay adventures for the real heads. You don't ever have to enter those latter parts if you don't want to! You can just hang out at the resort and have fun with all the themed entertainment, which I must stress is going to be both in-universe plausible and great, with something for everybody. Yes, there'll be a daycare, and yes, Flotter will be there in some capacity to entertain the kids. The food hall is my favorite part by far; I could pitch you Trek restaurant concepts all day. Romulan gourmet soup stand. Gummi candy store staffed by Ferengi where all the offerings are shaped like alien bugs. A vending machine where you can get a jumja stick or a three-pack of those nutrient pucks Picard and his new friends kept getting in "Allegiance." There will be an entire plant-based food vendor with a wide variety of delicious options for all meals, and it will be run by Vulcans.
A word on the gift shop
Question for you: have you ever watched a Star Trek show and seen a Starfleet officer pull on a jacket or shoulder a duffel bag that had the words "STAR TREK" on it? If so, then friend, I want to know where you get your hallucinogens because I want to experience this exactly once. All of the gift shops on my hotel grounds sell responsibly sourced, highly thought-out, well-made items that would be in-world plausible and have no obvious branding. Of course you can get a hand-carved horga'hn, but let's go bigger. Why not a light-up Tox Uthat for your nightstand? Ressikan flute for you, queen? How about a whole-ass knife store that's nothing but various kinds of Klingon cutlery? There will absolutely be an entire tailor's shop whose whole job is to put you in the Starfleet uniform of your choice; there may or may not be a Cardassian managing the place who's got a 50/50 cheerful/menacing vibe going on. There'll be not one but two stores that sell little models of ships: the regular ones and the gold ones. Don't tell me you can't picture it!!!!!
I think that's about it
Thank you for coming along with me on this bespoke journey into 100% insanity; now can somebody put me in touch with the Star Trek licensing people and also give me a billion dollars to build all this? Okay, thanks a lot!!
For timeline purposes and because it's fun, I'm positing a version of Farpoint that got built after the events of the TNG premiere where the Denebians got their act together and just built a normal surface base without suborning an interstellar lifeform.

The ghouls!!!
I'll be drawing the ghoulettes next!
Some hcs under the cut, some NSFW (op is a fetish/nsfw blog please be advised!!)
General:
-They dont really *have* genders/sexes in the human way but ones that live on earth and adopt human traits do generally present masc or fem or both or neither etc etc. They're shapeshifters too so its really fluid overall. This is my horny author way of going "anybody can have whatever junk is best for the time and anybody can get pregnant"
-Theyre shape shifters but they do have like a limit to that. Like theyre not gonna turn into animals or objects but they can change things about their appearances.
-Fire ghouls are generally leaders of their packs with serious demeanors.
-Quints all have a white streak in their hair and are generally caretakers of their packs, ranges from parental, to brotherly/sisterly, to body guard-like.
-Multis are simultaneously "combos" of other elements and their own thing. They're the least frequent type of ghoul. They can have multiples of body parts but its generally smaller parts (i.e. multiple eyes, horns, tail tips, but its exceptionally rare for them to have multiple sets of arms, legs, full 2nd tails, or heads or something)
-Multi ghouls are the rarest type of ghoul but end up in the modern band lineup the most for their versatile musical abilities and their beautiful voices :)
-Earth ghouls are the only ones that have "fur" to me, but its not long or anything. Its a very velvety soft peach fuzz that covers their body. It makes them slightly waterproof. The other elements have normal body hair patterns and textures.
-Earth ghouls can be inclined more towards plants or more towards rocks. Some are purely planty and love gardens and tea making, some are purely rocky and love crystals and hiking.
-Water ghouls are smooth like sharks and tend to have big floppy ears and tails that function like fins would. Genitalia can be more mammalian or more tentacle like depending on whatevers hottest to me at the time.
-Ghouls mostly wear monochrome colors, primarily black or grey
-There are exceptions to literally everything I said these are all just stereotypes and what's "typical" of a given element
-I AM A HORNS AND TAIL PIERCINGS BELIEVER
(Side note genuinely can you guys believe i was never ever a homestuck fan. You'd think I was with this design pattern of "Grey, color coded, only wears black, unique horn shapes".)
----
Dew
Arthritic, uses a cane sometimes especially after breaking his foot and especially if its cold outside
3rd oldest (behind Aether and Mountain). Was summoned in the 1800s. Doesn't remember what he originally did.
Very classic cartoon devil shapes to his features i.e. short pointed horns, arrow shaped tail, a mustache he occasionally styles, sharp cheekbones, etc
Falls into "pack leader fire" stereotype. Big tsundere also. Pretends to be annoyed with his pack but would be so lost without them.
----
Phantom
His "caretaker" type as a Quint is more akin to brotherly versus parental
Youngest. Summoned in the 2010s as a guitar tech and took over Aether's role after his retirement.
Hypermobile, uses braces on his elbows, knees and fingers
Very small and skinny for a quintessence since he's still really young. Will grow up to be shaped more like Omega and Aether :)
----
Rain
Most gender fluid of the "male" ghouls, presents androgynously
2nd youngest, summoned in the 2010s specifically to be the bass player during Copia's reign.
Secret troublemaker. Comes off as the calmest and most level headed but enables Phantom and Dew in their stupidity. Never gets in trouble for it because he's smarter than them and gets away with things.
His horn piercings were a gift from the girls for his summoning anniversary, theyre a long chain of sapphires and diamonds meant to look like rain over his head. Usually only worn for rituals.
----
Swiss
Combo of earth and quintessence. Got the protective nature and white streak(s. Plural. Because multi) of a quint and a connection with crystals/rocks of an earth.
Changes his hair often! Generally likes to keep it long but loves to experiment.
Multiple horns and tail tips. When Phantom was first summoned the other ghouls would fuck with him and tell him Swiss had 2 dicks and 2 assholes. (Dicks thing was true. The assholes thing was not.)
4th oldest (behind Aether, Mountain, and Dew), summoned in the late 1960s as a ghoul writer. Wrote some stuff for Nihil that unfortunately never ended up on a studio recording. Left touring to go back to writing.
----
Aether
His "caretaker" type as a quint is more parental
Excellent cook, hoards snacks in hidden locations to give them to other ghouls and papa on the spot. Did it very often on tour but the habit never left.
Oldest, was summoned a LOOOOONG time ago. Thousands of years old (he thinks. Hes lost track of time by this point.)
Ghouls dont have siblings but he and Omega consider eachother brothers.
Retired and went back to kitchen work, does some guitar tech stuff still as well.
----
Mountain
Weird girl. Big giant round eyeballs like a scared deer that never seem to blink. Not based on a deer though. He's more like a goat if anything.
Half planty earth ghoul half rocky earth ghoul. Loves collecting rocks and crystals but also keeps plants.
His velvety earth ghoul fur is mostly on his ears. Dew used to rub the fur between his fingers to soothe himself when he was first summoned and still does when hes in distress.
2nd oldest right behind Aether, was summoned several hundreds of years ago for, you guessed it, landscaping.

Taste of Strawberries, chap. 55 (part three)
Tumblr media
Hayffie Post-Mockingjay (Canon divergence) Multi-chapter, Rated M
Four years have passed since the end of the war when Effie becomes a fixture in Haymitch’s life once again. An old friendship is rekindled. Will it lead to something more?
Meanwhile, Panem has entered a new era. The rebellion’s over, the borders are open but in the shadows, anger and mistrust are smoldering. Something which will affect Haymitch and Effie’s life in a way they never saw coming. READ MORE
Author's note: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING SPOILERS!
The chapter contains easter eggs from SOTR and I also borrowed (caugh*stole*caugh) the Covey history scene and the Lucy Gray mention below. Hope you like Clerk Carmine and Tam Amber. I had SO much fun writing them here. Poor Haymich, haha!
We're reaching the end of this haydove chapter, only one more part to go - which will be up later this May - and then it's back to hayffie. Lots of DRAMA coming up for our beloved mentor and escort, and their little family.
Chapter 55, The dove and the butterfly (part three)
A group of long-legged waterbirds enjoyed themselves in the shallows. They were impressive creatures, no doubt. Surefooted. Beaks as long as sword blades. The sun, fully up now, played over their cool blue-gray plumage.
Water splattered as Tara’s dog bounced forward, then back again, yapping and barking at the birds. His tiny paws disturbed a batch of katniss plants, whose hallmark arrow-shaped leaves were just emerging.
The birds couldn’t care less. They barely deigned Gus with a glance. One clattered its thin, narrow beak and the dog bolted to the safety of Haymitch’s company. There he gave a wet shake and panted with glee, tongue sticking out, when the boy complained loudly.
Haymitch’s reflection swam on the surface, as he crouched by the water’s edge. He filled the empty jam jar, removed a stray leaf and settled the flowers inside.
The cabin by the lake was close to a two-hour trek. But worth it! And he always picked a bouquet on the way over here. Flowers, when they were in season. Twigs with pretty leaves and berries during the fall.
Today, they were bluebells, buttercups and lily of the valley. A nice combo of colors, he thought. He gave them a tentative sniff.
Water dripped down his wrist, when he carried his poor man’s vase back to the cabin. A solid rock propped the door open, to clear out the stuffy air. Tara just swept out the last of the dust, old leaves and dead bugs, using an old broom that Burdock fashioned.
She smiled his way when he placed the flowers in its usual spot: the glassless window overlooking the lake. The hot sun made a star of light in the old jar.
Putting the broom away, his girl sighed and stretched before she settled in the open doorway, back against the frame. With two easy twists, she removed her cracked, brown shoes. Flexed her toes against the warm wood, and Gus instantly flopped at her feet, head on top of them.
Haymitch joined her. Fitted himself snuggly in the door. Her knee, warm and downy, touched his and his hands immediately found hers.
The lake house felt like their place. His and Tara’s. A go-to spot far out in the wilderness where they could be alone. Far away from any living person. A place to call their own.
Not that he ever said it for Clerk Carmine to hear.
“This cabin was like a second home to them”, Tara once said, and by “them” she meant the Covey of course. “They went fishing and swimming here, collected eggs and harvested katniss roots. The family was much bigger then.”
It was Clerk Carmine and Tam Amber who first showed them this place, during a picnic. Well, showed Tara. Haymitch was just third wheeling. A spare tire, really.
The two men had been polite enough, but he couldn’t escape the feeling that they viewed him sort of like one would an annoying neighbor who’d accidentally locked himself out.
As if they were just hoping and waiting for someone to come take him off their hands.
The picnic took place on an unusually hot Wednesday. Clerk Carmine and Tam Amber had taken half a day off work for a change, to treat themselves to an outing. A daytrip. Just the family. And Haymitch.
Once they arrived at the lake, Tam Amber immediately reclined in the shade of an old willow tree, finding some relief from the beating sun. He puffed on a pipe, stuffed with a fresh batch of his favorite tobacco, until he finally tilted his feathered hat forward, and snored within the minute.
Clerk Carmine, on the other hand, spent most of his break, watching Haymitch like a hawk, making sure the boy didn’t ogle Tara in her bathing suit or – God forbid! – touched even an inch of her sun-warm skin. For two hours straight, his eyes shot daggers Haymitch’s way like, “I will hold you underwater, I swear I will do it!”
And since Haymitch enjoyed being alive and breathing, he put his best foot forward and kept a wide berth between himself and Tara.
Finally, Clerk Carmine grabbed a block of handmade soap that smelled funky and waded into the lake. With water reaching him mid-thigh, he washed what was left of his hair, dressed up in a pair of the largest, most patched up underwear-turned-bathing-trunks Haymitch had seen in his life.
They had bluegill for lunch. Tam Amber swiftly cleaned, gutted and cut the catch up into pieces, wrapped the fish in leaves and sprigs of some kind of herb he picked, and Tara arranged them in the embers of the fire.
Haymitch devoured his serving, but too anxious to ask for seconds. The Covey’s cooking put even ma’s to shame. And yet, he knew this would be their last outing as a quartet. Fivesome, if you counted Gus.
The two men didn’t say it in so many words, but Haymitch could tell they didn’t really want him there. He saw the words in Clerk Carmine’s eyes as clearly as if they’d been sky-written.
You’ve had years to get to know her. Now it’s our turn.
Haymitch couldn’t escape the feeling that the lake was all an audition of sorts. One he failed miserably. He bent over backwards and yet, nothing he did seemed right.
But they adored Tara. That’s all that really mattered. And they didn’t use their powers to try and turn her against her mother, despite Gwen’s smoke and mirrors – which was something Haymitch respected.
Especially given how hard it must have been for them, having to watch the girl grow up from afar.
“It’s like I’ve gotten two uncles”, Tara said, only days after her dramatic run-away to the Covey’s house. “Honorary uncles.”
Ever since her mother’s secret was out of the bag, hardly a day went by without Tara spending at least a few hours with her two new relatives on her pa’s side.
”Looking back, I feel like I should’ve connected the dots earlier”, she told Haymitch. “Because in their own way … they’ve always looked out for me. Even from afar. I know that if something had ever happened to ma. If Joe had … I wouldn’t be alone. They would have stepped up. Raised me. The Covey look out for their own.”
And not only had her small family suddenly grown by two members. Throughout this drama, she’d gotten closer to her mother as well. A mother who now answered all questions asked.
Watching the two Chance girls over the years, Haymitch had had this notion that Gwen didn’t know quite what to do with her daughter. At least not her teenage daughter.
His own ma was helicoptery in comparison. Overly involved. Breathing down his neck. Especially after he started venturing into the woods.
This used to make him envious of Tara’s freedom. The way her mother let her run wild, doing whatever she pleased at any given moment.
But as he got older and wiser, he had to admit to himself that, given the choice, he’d rather have a ma who held him accountable for his actions and expected him to pull his weight, over one who didn’t even seem to notice whether you were home in the morning or in bed at night.
Now, of course, he knew he misjudged Gwen Chance. There was much more to it, than met the eye.
Kit Raven. Meaghen. Who wouldn’t want a different life for their child after such an upbringing?
Having all the facts, it only made sense that Gwen wanted Tara to live the life she never had.
It explained something else too.
Mrs. G had always, always – from day one – been supportive of him and Tara. She was one of the few who gave them her blessing from the start. Who whole-heartedly welcomed Haymitch as one of the family. An integral part of her daughter’s life. Here to stay.
“If you like Haymitch, I like Haymitch”, she told Tara and that was that. Nothing more to it.
As far as the “uncles” were concerned, Haymitch reckoned they believed Tara could do far better than him. Deterred, probably, by Gwen and Kit Raven’s tragic love story. Afraid history would repeat itself and who could blame them?
Tara hated them being at odds, so Haymitch did his best to try and get on their good side.
Even if that meant taking a quiet step out of the pretty family picture, allowing those three to have their picnics and dinners and catch-ups in peace.
Haymitch still saw her every chance he got. Her and Burdock.
The Everdeen boy was another lake house regular and he taught Haymitch how to swim. Since then, the two of them went skinny-dipping, well into the fall. Tara giggled her little socks off when she heard.
Their own hours spent by the lake were precious and rare and here’s where she told him everything about the Covey. Stories and details gathered from Clerk Carmine, Tam Amber and her ma.
Apparently, her people were great travelers once, going from district to district to perform their music.
Tam Amber remembered it, as he was about Haymitch’s age when the war ended and the peacekeepers rounded up the Covey, killing all the adults and confining the kids to this district.
Tara loved those stories of the old days, with her kin rattling around in a broken-down pickup. When fuel got scarce, they resorted to hitching it up to a team of horses. By the time they were herded into Twelve, the team was pulling an old wagon and most of them were on foot.
But they were making it work, cooking over open fires, rolling into towns, playing in warehouses like the Hob, or fields if none were available. Famous in their way to the locals.
Haymitch was sure their life had its trials, but she had such a romantic view of it, he never mentioned that.
Returning to it was impossible, since no one could leave Twelve, and her uncles would never entertain the idea of hitting the road again.
But Tara was convinced there must be people outside of Panem. Far to the north. Sometimes she took to disappearing deep in the woods without him, and he worried she'd not come back. Not really, but a little.
When asked, Tam Amber and Clerk Carmine got her a faded overall – similar to the ones they wore. The latter threw in a shirt too, for good measure and Haymitch quickly noticed that Tara developed a habit of concealing snippets of color in her new attire.
A bright blue handkerchief peeking from her pocket. A raspberry ribbon stitched inside her cuff.
“What’s that from?” he asked once, running a finger against one of the rainbow ruffles. Old and ragged.
Tara hesitated, then said, almost reluctantly,
“It’s from her dress.”
“Who?”
She gave him a pointed look.
“Her.”
And that’s when Haymitch knew.
Her, could only mean one person.
Their victor. Their victor before their victor. Before Sophie.
A ghost girl, if there ever was one. From long ago. A girl no one seemed to know anything about.
When he was still just a kid, he didn’t even know Twelve had won the crown twice. He never saw anyone but Sophie in the clips of the old Games, but then again those early efforts were rarely featured, as they were said to be badly filmed and lacking in spectacle.
Back then, barely anyone in Twelve had a television, so the Games were mostly hearsay.
His parents weren’t even born yet and even Sae couldn’t (or wouldn’t) tell him much about the girl. She always got this sad look about her, whenever he brought it up.
Around the time he and Tara got serious, he figured there must be more to this victor’s absence on screen, than just poor production quality.
A reason why the Capitol focused so hard on Sophie, and her “beast mother”, whenever Twelve’s victories came up.
He hardly ever breached the subject with Tara though, because she never wanted to discuss her.
She’d much rather talk about her pa, and Haymitch got that. Kit Raven was her childhood hero. Just like Dom was his.
“The raven’s the biggest songbird there is”, she smiled, head rested against his lap, during one of their lazy afternoons. ”Did you know they use logic to solve things?”
“Got me beat there”, he had to admit, running his fingers through her hair.
“And nobody tells them what to say. That bird is who I want to be when I grow up. Someone who says whatever they think is right, no matter what. Like pa.”
Tara sighed.
“I keep wondering what my life would be like. If I’d gotten to have him in it. Maybe I would’ve burned flags and sung forbidden songs right alongside him”, she said, cheeks flushed with pride.
Yeah, thought Haymitch. And flogged right alongside him too. Or hanged or tortured or shot on sight.
He understood his girl’s grief, her frustration, but he had to agree with her uncles on this one. Her uncles and her ma. Even that nutcase auntie.
Why ask for trouble?
What could a couple of kids do, in the face of the Capitol? In the face of Snow?
And if it was possible to end the Games, wouldn’t someone have done it already? In 50 years time?
But Tara just wouldn’t let it go. For a girl who was quiet in public she sure could talk up a storm in private. About the reaping. The Games. The tesserae system. And, most of all: her wish to someway somehow someday, paint her own poster, just like her father did.
A worrying prospect, to say the least. Haymitch did his best to try and distract her from such dark and dangerous thoughts.
Maybe that’s why Gwen kept it a secret all this time, he thought.
Maybe she recognized that stubbornness – that will to fight back – because it was also Kit Raven’s. Kit Raven, who died for his beliefs.
And she simply didn’t want to water that seed; to add fuel to an already restless fire, lest it burned the forest down.
Another subject Tara didn’t enjoy dwelling on – not if she could help it – was the truth behind Pissin’ Joe’s murder. Or, more precisely: murderer.
Did it even matter? In the end? It could be anyone, and neither Tara nor Haymitch had any way of knowing for sure either way.
But sometimes, in the dead of night, when Haymitch lay awake, buried beneath quills, feeling his little brother’s snuffy breaths against his neck, he couldn’t help but wonder if Clerk Carmine or Tam Amber had something to do with it.
The Covey look out for their own.
He supposed it was too much to hope for that the sickly Meaghen was the one holding the knife. As a twisted way of atoning for her crimes against her baby sister.
Haymitch never pressed the issue though, given how utterly opposed Tara was to put a face on Joe’s assassin. He reckoned that was a bear you best not disturb.
And even if one or both uncles were somehow guilty, who could blame them, really?
Wouldn’t he, Haymitch, have done the same thing? If someone threatened the life of Tara or ma or Amadeus?
Tara gave his fingers a soft squeeze, bringing him back to himself.
“What’re you thinking about?” she smiled. “Care to share?”
“What am I thinking about?”
“Mm.”
Head tilted back against the doorpost, Haymitch stared across the shimmering blue waters. Never letting go of his love’s hand.
“I’m thinking that I’m happy”, he said. “Because I know you. We live in a piece of shit world … but at least we get to be alive at the same time. The same place. I keep wondering, what’re the odds for that? How many thousands of years? How many billions of people? And we still met. We get to be together. I’ll always be grateful for that.” His gray gaze found hers, held it, and he gave her knee a soft nudge with his own. “And for you, T. Always.”

Stone Landscaping Trends: What’s Hot in Outdoor Design
Tumblr media
When it comes to creating beautiful, functional, and long-lasting outdoor spaces, stone landscaping continues to lead the way. With natural charm, durability, and endless design versatility, stone has become a favorite choice for homeowners and landscape designers alike. But as outdoor living continues to evolve, so do the styles and trends that define great landscaping.
Whether you're planning a backyard makeover or looking for fresh inspiration, here are the hottest stone landscaping trends that are shaping outdoor design today.
1. Natural and Organic Looks
Nature-inspired designs are at the forefront of modern stone landscaping. More homeowners are opting for irregularly shaped flagstone, tumbled river rocks, and boulders that blend seamlessly with the natural environment. These materials bring an organic, earthy vibe to walkways, patios, and garden features—perfect for creating a peaceful, retreat-like atmosphere.
Tip: Pair natural stones with native plants for a sustainable, low-maintenance garden.
2. Mixed Materials for Texture and Contrast
One of the biggest trends in outdoor design is the use of mixed materials. Combining stone with wood, metal, or concrete creates a dynamic contrast that adds depth and personality to any space. For example, pairing sleek slate with warm wood decking or rough-cut stone with minimalist steel edging can deliver a modern, eye-catching aesthetic.
Popular Combos:
Stone + timber retaining walls
Gravel + concrete pavers
Cobblestone + wrought iron borders
3. Stone Fire Pits and Outdoor Kitchens
Outdoor living has moved beyond simple patios—now it's all about creating complete entertainment zones. Stone fire pits, fireplaces, and built-in kitchens are top additions in modern landscapes. Natural stone provides the perfect blend of heat resistance, rustic charm, and structural integrity for these hardscape features.
Why it’s trending: It extends the use of outdoor spaces into cooler evenings and months.
4. Low-Maintenance Rock Gardens
With homeowners seeking easy-care solutions, rock gardens are making a big comeback. By combining stones, succulents, and drought-tolerant plants, you can create stunning visuals without the need for constant upkeep. This trend is especially popular in areas with dry climates or those focused on water conservation.
Bonus: No mowing, minimal weeding, and year-round curb appeal.
5. Permeable Stone Surfaces
Eco-conscious landscaping is more important than ever. Permeable stone landscaping features—like gravel pathways or porous paver systems—allow rainwater to drain naturally into the soil, reducing runoff and helping with groundwater replenishment. They're not only good for the environment but also great for preventing puddles and erosion.
6. Monochrome Stone Palettes
While multi-colored stones have long been popular, modern design is seeing a shift toward monochrome tones like charcoal, grey, and beige. These neutral shades provide a sleek, minimalist look and allow surrounding greenery or decor to pop. Clean lines and subtle color variations bring a refined elegance to any landscape.
Final Thoughts
Stone landscaping continues to evolve with trends that balance beauty, sustainability, and function. From nature-inspired paths to fully-equipped stone kitchens, today’s outdoor spaces are becoming true extensions of the home. Whether you’re aiming for rustic charm, modern elegance, or eco-friendly design, stone is a timeless and flexible material that adapts to your vision.
Looking to refresh your yard? With these hot trends in interlock stone landscaping, your outdoor oasis is just a few stones away.

Creating a home that feels uniquely yours involves blending the latest trends with your personal style. Here are twelve of the hottest trends that are transforming homes into personalized sanctuaries in 2024.
1. Warm Colors
Gone are the days of sterile whites and cool grays. Warm colors like rich terracottas, sunny yellows, and deep maroons are making a comeback. These hues add a cozy, inviting atmosphere to any room, making your space feel more like a welcoming retreat.
2. Mixing Metals
The old rules of sticking to one type of metal in a room are out. Mixing metals—think brass with chrome or copper with stainless steel—adds visual interest and a unique flair. This trend allows for more personalized and dynamic design choices.
3. Playful Design
Home decor is taking a fun turn with playful designs that incorporate bold patterns, quirky art, and unexpected color combinations. This trend encourages creativity and self-expression, making your home a true reflection of your personality.
4. Sustainability
Sustainability is more than a trend; it’s a lifestyle choice. Eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient appliances, and sustainable building practices are becoming standard. Homes designed with sustainability in mind not only help the planet but also create healthier living environments.
5. Aesthetic Accessibility
Designing for accessibility doesn't mean compromising on style. The trend of aesthetic accessibility ensures that homes are both beautiful and functional for everyone, regardless of age or ability. Thoughtful design can include wider doorways, lower countertops, and stylish grab bars.
6. Vintage Trends
Nostalgia is powerful, and vintage trends are back in full force. From mid-century modern furniture to retro-inspired appliances, incorporating vintage elements can add character and charm to your home. These pieces often become the focal points of a room.
7. Fluting
Fluting is making waves in interior design. This decorative technique involves creating grooves or ridges in materials like wood, plaster, or metal. Fluting adds texture and depth to walls, furniture, and architectural features, giving spaces a sophisticated, crafted look.
8. Biophilia
Bringing the outdoors in with biophilic design is more popular than ever. This trend focuses on incorporating natural elements like plants, natural light, and organic materials into your home. Biophilia not only enhances aesthetics but also promotes well-being and relaxation.
9. Multi-Use Appliances
In the era of multifunctional living, multi-use appliances are a must. These innovative devices save space and add convenience. Think ovens that also steam, fridges with built-in coffee makers, and washer-dryer combos. They make your home smarter and more efficient.
10. Spa-Like Bathrooms
Transform your bathroom into a spa-like oasis. Features like rainfall showerheads, freestanding tubs, and heated floors turn everyday routines into luxurious experiences. Soft lighting and soothing color schemes complete the tranquil atmosphere.
11. Making the Most of Space
Efficient use of space is crucial, especially in smaller homes. Built-in storage, multifunctional furniture, and creative layouts maximize every square inch. This trend ensures that your home is both practical and stylish, regardless of its size.
Conclusion
These trends are shaping the future of home design, offering endless possibilities to create spaces that are truly custom to your lifestyle and tastes. Embracing these trends, especially with home additions in Los Angeles, can help you craft a home that’s as unique as you are. Stay tuned for our next article where we dive deeper into incorporating these trends.

Creative Ideas for Outdoor Lounge Settings in Sydney
Tumblr media
Sydney’s temperate climate and stunning natural scenery make it the perfect backdrop for creating exquisite outdoor lounge settings. Whether you have a sprawling garden, a cosy patio, or a compact balcony, there are endless ways to design an inviting and stylish outdoor lounge space. Here are some fresh and innovative ideas tailored to the unique charm of Sydney living.
Urban Oasis
For those living in the heart of Sydney, transforming a small balcony or rooftop into an urban oasis can be a delightful escape from city life. Opt for compact, multi-functional furniture such as modular sofas or folding chairs that maximise space without compromising comfort. Vertical gardens or hanging planters can add greenery without taking up valuable floor space. String lights or lanterns can create a cosy, intimate atmosphere in the evenings, making your urban outdoor lounge a perfect spot for relaxation or entertaining.
Tropical Retreat
Sydney’s warm climate is ideal for a tropical-themed outdoor lounge. Use lush greenery and vibrant floral arrangements to bring a sense of the tropics to your space. Rattan or wicker furniture pieces with bright, colourful cushions can add to the tropical feel. Consider incorporating a water feature, like a small fountain or a birdbath, to enhance the sense of tranquillity. Bamboo accents, tiki torches, and vibrant outdoor rugs can complete the tropical ambiance, making your lounge area feel like a permanent vacation spot.
Modern Minimalism
For those who prefer a sleek, contemporary look, a modern minimalist outdoor lounge might be the perfect fit. Choose furniture with clean lines and simple forms, favouring materials like metal, concrete, and teak for a sophisticated aesthetic. Neutral colours like white, grey, and black can create a calm and elegant environment. To prevent the space from feeling too stark, add texture through outdoor rugs, cushions, and blankets. Minimalist planters with sculptural succulents or grasses can add a touch of greenery without overwhelming the space.
Bohemian Hideaway
Create a relaxed, eclectic outdoor lounge with a bohemian-inspired design. Mix and match different furniture styles and patterns to achieve a laid-back, personalised vibe. Layer rugs, cushions, and throws in a variety of textures and vibrant colors to create a cosy and inviting space. Hammocks or hanging chairs can add a fun, whimsical touch. Decorate with fairy lights, lanterns, and an assortment of potted plants to enhance the boho-chic atmosphere. This style is perfect for those who enjoy a casual, free-spirited outdoor setting.
Alfresco Dining and Lounge Combo
Combine the best of both worlds by designing an outdoor space that functions as both a dining and lounging area. Choose a versatile outdoor dining table that can double as a coffee table when paired with comfortable lounge chairs or benches. This setup allows you to seamlessly transition from meals to relaxation without needing separate areas. Add outdoor cushions, a large parasol or retractable awning for shade, and ambient lighting to create a space that is perfect for both daytime gatherings and evening soirees.
Designing an outdoor lounge in Sydney offers a myriad of possibilities to suit various tastes and lifestyles. Whether you prefer coastal chic, urban minimalism, tropical flair, or bohemian eclecticism, the key is to create a space that reflects your personal style and provides a comfortable, inviting environment for relaxation and entertainment. With the right elements and a bit of creativity, your outdoor lounge can become your favourite spot to enjoy Sydney's beautiful weather and stunning views.

Maximising Small Spaces: Tips for Renovating Compact Bathrooms in Perth Apartments
Living in a Perth apartment with limited bathroom space doesn't mean you have to compromise on style or functionality. You can transform your small bathroom into a visually appealing and highly functional oasis with thoughtful planning and clever design choices. In this article, we'll explore a range of strategies to help you make the most of your compact bathroom renovations in Perth.
**1. Prioritise Smart Storage
- Vertical Storage: Install shelves or cabinets that extend vertically to utilise wall space efficiently. It keeps essential items within reach without cluttering the limited floor area.
- Floating Vanities: Opt for wall-mounted vanities to create an illusion of more space underneath. It allows for easy cleaning and gives the bathroom an open feel.
- Built-in Niches: Incorporate recessed shelves or niches in your shower or above the toilet to store toiletries and keep surfaces uncluttered.
**2. Opt for Light Colors
- Light-Colored Tiles: Choose light-coloured tiles for the walls and floor to visually expand the space. Light hues reflect more light, making the bathroom more open and airy.
- Monochromatic Palette: Stick to a monochromatic colour scheme for a cohesive look. Different shades of the same colour create depth without overwhelming the senses.
**3. Choose Space-Saving Fixtures
- Compact Fixtures: Select smaller fixtures explicitly designed for tight spaces, such as narrow sinks and corner toilets. It ensures that essential elements don't overpower the room.
- Sliding Doors: Replace traditional swinging doors with sliding doors to eliminate the need for clearance space. It instantly frees up extra room in your bathroom.
**4. Optimise Lighting
- Natural Light: Maximise natural light by using sheer window treatments that allow sunlight to filter through. Natural light creates an open and welcoming atmosphere.
- Illuminated Mirrors: Install mirrors with built-in LED lighting to provide both functional illumination and a sense of depth.
**5. Strategic Mirror Placement
- Mirrored Walls: Consider adding a mirrored wall to double the perceived space visually. This design trick is especially effective in small bathrooms.
- Mirror Cabinets: Choose a medicine cabinet with a mirrored front to combine storage with reflective surfaces.
**6. Create the Illusion of Space
- Large Tiles: Use larger tiles on the floor and walls to create fewer grout lines, making the space feel more expansive.
- Glass Enclosures: Opt for transparent or frosted glass shower enclosures to allow sightlines to continue uninterrupted, creating a sense of openness.
**7. Multi-Functional Design
- Shower-Bathtub Combo: If space allows, consider a shower-bathtub combination. This multi-functional fixture saves space and caters to different needs.
- Foldable Fixtures: Incorporate foldable elements, like drop-down shower seats or collapsible drying racks, to provide functionality without occupying permanent space.
**8. Creative Storage Solutions
- Over-Toilet Shelves: Install shelves above the toilet to utilise vertical space for storing towels, toiletries, and other essentials.
- Tiered Organisers: Utilise tiered organisers in cabinets to maximise vertical storage and keep items easily accessible.
**9. Minimalistic Decor
- Declutter: Keep countertop items to a minimum to maintain a clean and uncluttered appearance.
- Simple Decor: Use minimalistic decor items, such as a single potted plant or wall art, to add personality without overwhelming the space.
**10. Consult with Professionals
- Interior Designers: Seek advice from interior designers experienced in small space design. They can provide tailored solutions to make the most of your bathroom.
- Renovation Contractors: Collaborate with reputable Perth kitchen and bathroom renovations contractors who understand the challenges of small spaces and can execute your vision effectively.
**11. Embrace Open Shelving
- Wall-Mounted Shelves: Consider open shelves that are attached to the walls. These can hold towels, toiletries, and decorative items, adding both storage and a touch of style.
- Glass Shelves: Glass shelves create a sense of openness as they allow light to pass through. They can be placed above sinks or beside mirrors to store essentials.
**12. Integrated Storage Solutions
- Vanity Drawers: Choose vanities with deep drawers that can store various items, from cosmetics to cleaning supplies, keeping the countertop clutter-free.
- Hidden Storage: Incorporate hidden storage behind mirrors or under the sink. These concealed compartments offer functional space without compromising aesthetics.
**13. Consider Multi-Tiered Towel Racks
- Wall-Mounted Towel Racks: Install multi-tiered towel racks on the walls to save floor space while providing ample storage for towels and clothing items.
- Over-Door Towel Hooks: Utilise the back of the bathroom door by adding hooks to hang towels and robes, freeing up wall space for other purposes.
**14. Opt for Minimalist Hardware
- Sleek Handles: Choose sleek and minimalistic handles for cabinets and drawers. These streamline the appearance of the bathroom and prevent visual clutter.
- Wall-Mounted Faucets: Wall-mounted faucets take up less counter space and give a clean look to your bathroom sink.
**15. Customise Your Storage
- Tailored Shelving: Install shelves that fit around existing fixtures, such as pipes and corners. Customised shelving maximises every inch of available space.
- Vertical Storage Towers: Vertical storage towers can be fitted between the sink and toilet or next to the shower, offering designated spaces for various items.
**16. Utilise Baskets and Bins
- Wire Baskets: Hang wire baskets on the walls to store toiletries, washcloths, and other small items. Their open design adds texture and keeps things organised.
- Basket Shelving Units: Use small shelving units with baskets or bins to create organised storage areas that are easy to access.
Conclusion
Renovating a compact bathroom in your Perth apartment might seem challenging. Still, with the right strategies and design choices, you can turn it into a functional and visually appealing space. You can maximise every inch of your bathroom by embracing smart storage solutions, light colours, and space-saving fixtures while creating a sense of openness. Remember, the key is to think creatively and consider the unique needs of your space. With careful planning and attention to detail, your small bathroom can become a comfortable and stylish retreat that perfectly suits your lifestyle.

i was tagged by @nostradamus0, thank you so much!
favourite movie trilogy of all time: the peter jackson lotr adaptations, extended editions, no contest. nothing compares.
name of the main character in the last book you read/book you are currently reading: i'm currently reading a book of essays, so—no main character, but i was reading two novels at the same time before that, and the main characters were benedikt (from the slynx) and rocannon (from... you guessed it... rocannon's world).
favourite color combination: this is so difficult to choose, but i'm always into a citrusy yellow-green + amber combo, maybe with a splash of lilac.
most common craving: salt and fat! so, i tend to crave rich foods like macaroni and cheese a lot, or often just potato chips. i also get random cravings for green things—spinach, broccoli, etc.
favourite word: i literally went to my notebook full of words i like for this one, and i'm gonna admit that i have two words i'm waiting for the perfect chance to use—cernuous (adj. meaning inclining or nodding, as in a plant drooping) and diapason (noun meaning a burst of sound, or the entire range of musical notes).
word count of the last writing piece you worked on: 2,142! all of which i wrote yesterday in an absolute fever of multi-doctorrose feelings. (i can post some snippets if people are interested/want to harass me to finish it, lmao.)
current obsession: basically every fifth and sixth doctor audio, the lovely sweater i'm working on, my purple bean sprouts that are just coming up (the seeds came from france!), and the new iamamiwhoami single.
tagging: @sunnibits, @saecookie, @inkwardspots, @tuu-likki, @rosemarion, and anyone else who might want to!

Top 10 Niche Interests
Fixations? Obsessions? This is incredibly hard because I have wayyyy too many niche interests, so instead of stressing about it, I tried to channel the 10 things that immediately speak to me and maybe aren't so obvious from what I post here, like how much I'm obsessed with wigs, doll furniture, incredibly specific blogs, all forms of clothing with pockets, swimming pools, whimsical bus stops, over-the-top bathrooms, etc. etc Instead, I opted for some specifics that feel a little more evergreen and long tailed, like, so LIFE-long tailed that it's tough to nail down when or how they became part of the national psyche. I thank @alienfuckeronmain for the initial tag, and I'm tagging her AGAIN for round two because I know she has a billion additional niche things, and she'll post them, and I'll scream because it'll trigger five other things I neglected to post here, and I'll probably post my own round two, arggggh, insert aggressive sighing. Anyway, I tag ANYONE who wants to do it, just tag me so I can see!
1. Indoor Trees
I have no idea why this concept PULLS so hard because houseplants are kind of meh to me, but you want to plant an entire-ass TREE indoors, in the place where you live? Me, too, and I'd add a conversation pit plus a combo gold/red bathroom, among other things, and, bam, we're in my imaginary dream home, which I have literally, constantly ALWAYS mentally constructed from the time I was about six or so. (If you're curious, it has multiple themed rooms, and the closest I've seen to it recently is the outstanding Dita von Teese AD feature, but Amy Sedaris’s apartment comes close, too). There are two (2) 1960s houses in Long Beach with magnificent indoor trees, but I can't find them online, so have this modern interpretation and cry with me about how I can't visit the multi-story fake tree inside Clifton's Cafeteria for a good long while:

2. Conventions of Fans of Any Kind
One thing that I don't think I'll ever lose is how much I *love* people who are fans of SOMETHING, people who have a passion and create something about it or cosplay it or simply gather to celebrate it and connect to other people through it. The Internet provides in all kinds of ways, but I'm talking specifically about IRL conventions and the way my heart pitter pats when I first walk in those doors, SWOON! And it doesn’t matter how big the convention is or how random, I've been to smaller events like CatCon and the My Little Pony convention all the way up to biggies like WonderCon and Comic Con, and I have yet to be disappointed. I might know jack shit about what I'm walking into, but I want to see the merch, hear about the panels, and check out the people who are fucking PUMPED to be there. Sadly, I think it's gonna be a lonnnnng time until these come back, but I can live vicariously through my old photos, sigh:
Tumblr media
3. Dutch Wax Fabrics and African Fashion
I'm not the snazziest of dressers, but textiles, colors, and patterns have been an obsession that has soothed my visual soul for as long as I can literally remember. Wax fabric marries all three of those touchpoints, plus throws in a healthy dose of style, and I count myself lucky to have seen two big exhibits on the subject (this was one of them), oh, how I wish there were more! For sure, there's a fucked up underlying colonial/imperialist history here, but there's also humor and color and vibrancy, a reclamation of sorts, and multiple levels of fashion that take my breath away. I cannot do the different patterns justice at all, but the fan motif is one of my faves:
Tumblr media
4. Hearst Castle vs. Madonna inn
These two fall into my #home tag because they're where I'm from, and they speak to me as equally sublime and ridiculous, camp and kitsch writ large and small, different (yet similar!) versions of Xanadu that two rich white men built as shrines to their own personal "taste." And the irony is that a lot of people shit on Alex Madonna for being tacky (the Madonna Inn is...uh, something else), yet praise WR Hearst for all the high-class art and architecture, most of which is fully lifted from desperate churches between and after world and yet they're both more or less the same concept (lodging for weary travelers, self-aggrandizement, questionable taste-mixing). Hearst Castle edges out slightly for me because it's bigger and has spectacular scenery and history, plus it gives me doses of LA noir thanks to the way Hearst killed a guy in a jealous Charlie Chaplin-related rage and Hedda Hopper covered it up, all kinds of old Hollywood shenanigans happened up there, etc. But I'm low-key an expert on both houses of the holy, I'm OBSESSED with both, and we can leave it at that. I mean, come on:
Tumblr media
5. Snow Globes
I had to cull my personal collection slightly just to fit it all on the dedicated shelf in my bathroom, and I seriously need to refill all the water lines, but nothing beats a snow globe in terms of memorable souvenir, especially when you put it in a bathroom. The majesty!!! The jewel of my collection is the one from Sherwood Forest because WHY NOT celebrate a historic place and moment in the basic way?? He robbed from the rich to give to the poor, and the gift shop about 100 feet from the tree he hid in does the same! The circle of life! The irony of all the watermarks on this blessed image...protect:
Tumblr media
6. Highly Specific Museums
Look, we can all agree that the more venerated museums in the world are a form of garbage in terms of what they represent, what they've done, and who runs them, but I'm here for the museums that collect and celebrate things that tend to get overlooked. There are too many to list that I love that are still thriving, so I'm going to say goodbye to four recently departed faves. RIP to the Pez museum, I'm so glad I saw you and purchased your stale candy souvenirs. RIP to the museum of terrible food, you were a pop up when Phoenix and I saw you, and I will forever think about the worker describing people literally vomiting during their visits. RIP to the currywurst museum in Berlin, I've had currywurst exactly once and it was not for me, but I respect the Journey you took me on, including obscure east German TV shows that helped make you so popular (??). Finally, RIP to the velvet painting museum, there's no way to mince words, the person who owned you was crazy AS FUCK and had zero clue how to run a business, but I'm so glad I saw you multiple times and purchased my own velvet treasure (not this exact one, but remarkably similar):
Tumblr media
7. Liminal Spaces: Grocery Store Edition
Confession time for those who don't know me all that well, I'm a big time voyeur, and nothing fills my heart with joy like a walk at 7 or 8 pm, the witching hour when people haven't pulled the curtains, and I can scope out their decorations/furnishings without it being "weird." Another confession is how much I unabashedly adore grocery stores in other countries and will spend at least an hour wandering aisle by aisle, falling in love with how much everything is different yet completely the same:
Tumblr media
8. Agatha Christie Novels:
As a child, I was a fairly compliant reader--I had to read something for school? Okay! For my mom? Sounds good! But the books that sparked the initial fire for me to read something purely for myself were second-hand (probably fourth- or fifth-hand, judging by cover art) Agatha Christie short story anthologies, which were the gateway drug to full Agatha Christie novels, then other mystery novels, and so on. But getting back to Agatha, I obviously loved all the stories, but every decade spawned incredibly good cover art (like, exceptionally good), and this particular artist's are right up near the top for me (I go back and forth on a lot of the '50s and '60s ones):
Tumblr media
9. Scopitones
I link my obsession with scopitones both to my love of music videos in general and a shop in Austin, TX, that sold DVD compilations of them in particular, but either way, they're underappreciated and kitschy all in one! Francoise Hardy and the rest of the ye-ye's are my forever girls for this medium, but seemingly every country cranked them out, both actual set videos and "live" performances? If you don't know what they are, scopitones were machines that played music videos in French cafes in the '60s (??), so it was sort of your proto-MTV way to see your faves sing and dance. Oh, Francoise...so moderne!!
Tumblr media
10. Cover Songs
I have so much patience and love for cover songs of any stripe, the more genre-bending and/or surprising, the better! My only minor beef is the trend in slooooooooowing down songs to make a point, but even those ones have a special place in my heart if they're effective. Live Lounge feeds my hunger the best, but my meta fave for representing this concept is Pulp's Bad Cover Version, which was already lyrically INSPIRED, a song about bad cover versions in terms of relationships, but then they did a video that was a visual "bad" cover version, with actors lip synching over an audio "bad" cover version, and all of it just worked? The cover for the single is someone in the band as a boy, making his own bad cover version of a Bowie album cover, it's meta meta meta, and I love love love, here's the video, if you're curious. In the more sublime cover category, I'm absolutely addicted to all of Orville Peck's covers, I truly hope he officially releases them sometime soon, but I wholeheartedly support any artist who does it:

Species Spotlight #2: Betta aka Siamese/Chinese Fighting Fish
The fish with many names, I’ve heard them called Japanese or Chinese or Siamese Fighting Fish, but they are generally known as Betta, which is from their scientific name ‘Betta splendens’.
Tumblr media
(Elephant Ear Betta, male)
So you’re considering a betta?
Tumblr media
(Male veil tail betta, female betta)
Betta tie with goldfish for being some of the most abused, misunderstood fish on the market. If you have a betta fish and reading this alarms you please don’t be too upset, in all likelihood you were given bad information or no information when you acquired one. I’m not here to pass judgment on you, but I am here to help you set things up so your fish leads a long and happy life!
The betta is an egglaying variety of fish but interestingly enough they do so with bubble nests. The male attempts to attract a female by blowing bubbles in a tight formation, usually in the corner of the tank. If your betta starts doing this it means he feels comfortable an safe!
They are from the gourami family of which there are over 133 recognized species!
Tank Size
It’s not uncommon to see a betta fish in a small tank or even vases and there are a huge variety of ‘tanks’ being sold that specifically claim to be for bettas. Betta should never, ever, ever, be housed in less than 2.5 gallons and even then I frown on something of that size, but it’s way more preferable to anything smaller. 3+ gallons are far better. Many of the ‘tanks’ that claim to be for betta are even less than 1 gallon! That’s the equivalent of your house being the size of a small closet. Sure you could live in that but it won't be pleasant at all.
Not only are they too small but many of them lack filtration or heaters and don’t even have the room for either! Betta require tropical temperatures, so between 75°-80° degrees Fahrenheit (23°-26° Celsius), like any fish they also require a filter (which also brings oxygen into the water).
Tumblr media
There are good quality 3-5 gallon tanks that you can get and set up easily enough. I keep my betta in a 7.5 gallon planted tank. You can even just buy all the different parts you need to set up your own beautiful tank as 5-gallon basic tanks aren’t very expensive at all!
Some stores also sell ‘betta plants’ that they claim the fish will nibble on the roots for nutrition. Sure. A starving fish will nibble on anything to survive but they are primarily carnivorous. Not only are the plants starving the poor fish they also take up a lot of the surface area of the water, or even block it off completely! Betta are labyrinth fish meaning they can gulp air to get extra oxygen so it’s important that they have access to the surface of their water. Add to that that a tank filter isn’t just to clean the water of waste, but also to aerate the water to bring in more oxygen for your fish.
Types of betta:
Betta are being bred not only by hobbyists but professionals and over the years a bigger and bigger variety of them have become available. When I was just a kid, over 20 years ago, there were no varieties listed they’d just be ‘betta fish’.
Vieltail
The most basic variety are the ones I saw as a kid, they’re known as veil tails. This variety is so common that they aren’t even allowed to compete in betta shows (like dog shows but for betta fish!). Just because they are common doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get one! They’re still very beautiful and come in a variety of colors. They are called veiltail because their tail resembles a draping vail.
Combtail
Combtail betta can have any shaped tail or fins, but they also have extra extensions almost like fingers.
Crowntail
Crowntails are like the combtail on steroids. At least half their tail is made up with the trailing fingers, rather than just a short bit on the end.
Delta/Super Delta
These guys are rather stunning as their tails are symmetrical (if an ideal example) with the same amount of tail above and below and spread out evenly with no draping or drooping.
Double Tail
As it says on the tin. They don’t have a split tail but rather literally two tails! The two tails can be in different sizes.
Half-moon/Over- half-moon
These fellows have tails even bigger than the delta/super delta mentioned above, about 180 degrees and some even over that. That severe of a tail can lead to them being more easily damaged, try to avoid anything sharp or rough in their tank.
Halfsun
Sort of a mix between a combtail and a half-moon tailed variety with a dash of delta. They have full flowing tails with a bit of a fringe at the edge.
Plakat
For this variety, their tails are much shorter, but still fanned out and beautiful. Due to their short tails, they’re much less likely to be damaged.
Rosetail/Feathertail
These lovely boys are tails that are so full they look feathery!
Roundtail
Their tail is even fuller and round than the plakat a bit like a D shape.
Spadetail
Where the roundtail has a nicely rounded tail the tip of the spadetail’s fin comes to a little point!
Elephant Ear
With these, it’s less about the shape of the tail and rather the shape of the fins. They’re very big! The featured image of this post is of one!
Those are just the tail shapes, as to their color patterns? Here is a quick list of color types:
Butterfly, koi, Cambodian, marble, dragon (avoid this variety as they often get scales growing over their eyes), mask, multi-colored, piebald (like marbled but different!), solid, wild type (less vivid colors, closer to how they appear in the wild).
The colors they come in are across the spectrum, including albino. Finding the color, pattern and tail combo you like may be a challenge, but betta fish are easy to find and easy to take care of.
Recently a new variety has come to market known as ‘kings’ this just signifies them as being a super-sized betta! I have a half-moon wild type betta and he is easily twice the size of regular betta.
Good Tankmates
If you have a smaller tank, like a 3-5 gallon I suggest keeping your betta solo as they are very territorial! They can be housed with snails though, but make sure to introduce the betta to the tank first or he may kill anything that was in the tank before him to establish his territory.
Betta have wildly different personalities, one person will have a peaceful community friendly betta and another will have a ‘Kill all trespassers!’ variety. It needs to be stated that males and females don’t really get along very well. I also don’t suggest breeding them as they are already heavily bred professionally and by hobbyists. Only try breeding if you are very very serious about it and have the room for them.
I have successfully kept my king betta with other fish in a large tank that gives both him and the tankmates to move around in. As long as they have a buffer a betta shooould be willing to play nice. Be warned though, this may not be the same for you. I would also suggest avoiding putting them in a tank with another fish that has a big flowing tail.
Betta also move up and down the tank meaning, no territory is really safe from an aggressive betta. Cory catfish may work in a large tank, tetra may be quick enough to avoid an aggressive betta but keep a close eye on them to make sure he isn’t overly stressing them out. It’s a lot of trial and error.
Feeding
There are a lot of different foods you can feed to your betta but make sure to get food specially formulated for them. Also, try to mix up the variety of food you give them. Frozen small foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill and the like make good treats but not as a regular part of their diet.
Make sure to only give them a few pellets at a time, as their stomach is only about as big as their eyeball and they can be very greedy eaters and you can overfeed them! Yes, betta can get fat!
Tank Temperature
75°-80° degrees Fahrenheit (23°-26° Celsius)
Final Words
Betta are some of the best beginner fish as long as they’re given a good home. They’re full of personality, they live 3-5 years, are very hardy and easy to care for. They’re personally one of my favorite fish and I never tire of them!
If you want to find a rarer type of betta ask around online, speak to local aquarium clubs and you’ll definitely find a breeder who can help you out.

Arle Nadja for Smash Bros.!
THERE’S A PART TWO NOW!
Ever since the introduction of the concept of a Smash Bros. Ballot, I’ve always been an advocate of three choices for Smash DLC: Bandana Waddle Dee from the Kirby series, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, and Arle Nadja from the Puyo Puyo games. Today, I’ll use every effort to make a moveset for the one and only Arle Nadja. Now, allow me to daydream a little bit and think of how my favorite female protagonist ever could be included in my favorite crossover fighting series of all time.
Tumblr media
This will encompass mostly her whole moveset, and we will draw inspiration from the whole series. Yes, the whole series. Whenever the “Works like” part details another move, that’s only so that the motion of the attack can make sense in your head. Buckle up, because this will be a long read. Hope you’ll stick ‘till the end...! But before that, we need to address something else.
いっきまーす !
Número 0: Archetype, movement, and... To Puyo, or not to Puyo?
People are quick to say that Zelda fits the Magical Girl archetype in Smash Bros., I assure you that. I don’t think so. Despite her using magic on her moves, she’s not quite representative of the more happy type of magical girl that Arle fits in best.
In terms of how she would move on the field, well, she would be average. To put it simply, she would be below Mario in terms of movement speed and jump height. Having her as a floaty type wouldn’t suit her that much, considering she’s pretty quick and snarky. But she can’t be a fastfaller either, c’mon, she’s not that fast. Besides, having her this way works greatly to introduce her as a not-so-complicated fighter, well-balanced and all that.
Arle, in terms of raw power is quite capable. But her base level cannot be overpowered. In fact, she could be a character type that depends fully on comboing to unleash her full strength, because at base level, she could work like base Joker: capable, yet feeble and not too powerful. #foreshadowing
Now, whenever people think of Arle, most will be quick to draw a link to the puzzle series Puyo Puyo, which is absolutely normal. So, when people try to come up with a moveset for her, more often than not they come up with a mechanic that involves either chaining or pelting Puyos into the field. I’m gonna do without. Not because I couldn’t come up with one, but because it wouldn’t feel natural. It would come up as a nuisance to include a gimmick like this one in her moveset. Plus, I think we can do better by creating a mix of her appearances in both Puyo AND Madou without having to sacrifice one for the other. WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY:
Número 1: Her Neutrals, Tilts, Smash Attacks and Aerials.
Jab: Fighter Arle’s Punch and Kick (Puyo Puyo Quest).
Works like: Mario / Luigi / Dr. Mario (jab 2 & 3)
Tumblr media
First a punch, then a flipkick. A swift movement, fit for her.
Side Tilt: Finger-pointing (Puyo Puyo Fever era).
Works like: Original
Tumblr media
You know this pose. A trademark of her appearances in the modern Puyo Puyo games. Not fast on motion, but could pack a punch.
Up Tilt: Thunder [サンダー] (Puyo Puyo Fever).
Works like: Ness (up tilt)
Tumblr media
Some lightning! Inspired by the way she uses Heaven’s Ray in Fever 2, she would raise her arms, unleashing small lightning bolts on the way up.
Down Tilt: Judgement (bomb) (Madou Monogatari I Mega Drive).
Works like: Villager (down tilt)
Tumblr media
A small bomb item that explodes in a spark instantly in front of her. No way we’re letting her use such explosives in the game, oh no.
Dash Attack: Escape dash (Madou Monogatari: Saturn).
Works like: Wario (dash attack)
Tumblr media
Make way! A straightforward tackle attack. No one will know you were running away.
Forward Smash: Fireball (Blast) (Madou Monogatari: Final Exam).
Works like: Mario / Dr. Mario (forward Smash, attack), Zelda (forward Smash, motion)
Tumblr media
Wind up, then unleash one explosive blast!
Up Smash: Judgement [ジュゲム] (Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary).
Works like: Original
Tumblr media
Charge up, then unleash a barrage of ascending shocks that end up in one big explosion. The bursts come from the sides, something that hasn’t been seen yet in Smash.
Down Smash: Mind Blast [ブレインダムド] (Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary).
Works like: Original
Tumblr media
Low on damage, good for shield damage. A wavy spell that wouldn’t deal much knockback. A confusing Smash attack that’s bound to leave some puzzled.
Neutral Air: Counter [リバイア] (Puyo Puyo Chronicles)
Works like: King K. Rool (N-Air)
Tumblr media
A quick aerial hit with a special barrier-like effect. Don’t worry, this is not a counter. It’s only to push your foes away.
Forward Air: Fireball (downwards motion) (Puyo Puyo Fever Chuu!)
Works like: Peach / Daisy (F-Air)
Tumblr media
A quick fling of her hand forward in mid-air. Could also have a burning effect, who knows!
Back Air: Ice Storm (wave motion) (Puyo Puyo Tetris)
Works like: Corrin (B-Air, no impulse)
Tumblr media
A wide motion, unleashing a light wave of ice. Not strong and can’t freeze, but could be a multi-hit.
Up Air: Ruipanko [るいぱんこ] (Puyo Puyo~n)
Works like: King K. Rool (U-Air, no impulse)
Tumblr media
A motion up, then a small, quick barrier that hits opponents from below. The barrier can protect you from incoming attacks from above. Could be used as a juggling tool!
Down Air: Guest move: Tempest [アクティーナ] (Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary)
Works like: Zelda (D-Air)
Tumblr media
Borrowing a move from one of her friends, it’s Amitie’s Tempest attack. A big spark at the bottom that spikes opponents.
Número 2: Throws, Special Attacks and Final Smash.
Forward Throw: Y E E T (Madou Monogatari: Saturn)
Works like: Mario / Dr. Mario / Luigi (forward throw)
Tumblr media
Imagine that you’re that spell that’s flying across the screen. Yep, a heavy throw forwards.
Back Throw: Bayoen (motion) (Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary)
Works like: Donkey Kong (back throw)
Tumblr media
With a smile and a gleamy face, she flings her foe backwards. The attack could also feature Carbuncle attacking with a laser beam, who knows.
Up Throw: Heaven’s Ray [ヘブンレイ] (Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary)
Works like: Original
Tumblr media
A toss up with a blast of light that could potentially damage others in the vicinity or above the blast.
Down Throw: Guest move: Algorithm [インテグラル] (Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary)
Works like: Original
Tumblr media
Borrowing another move, this time, from Ringo: She would use Carbuncle as a book to slam her foe down! Eh? Nah, don’t worry about the little guy, I’m sure he’s OK.
Neutral Special: Fireball [ファイヤー] (Madou Monogatari: Saturn)
Works like: Plasma Breath (Ridley, wavy motion), Bomb (Young Link, explosive effect, knockback)
Tumblr media
This one is the real deal, her trademark spell, Fireball! Pelt one good fireball that explodes on contact. Enemies that get hit by it won’t fly too far, but no one will ever be able to remove the burn. Plus, its wavy pattern makes it hard to avoid.
Side Special: Ice Storm [アイスストーム] (Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary)
Works like: Poison Breath (Piranha Plant, chargeable side-B), Blizzard (Ice Climbers, freezing effect)
Tumblr media
Charge up, store, then on command, unleash a wave of icicle sparks that, when fully charged, can freeze you up! Low charges will disappear right away, while a full charge will take longer to dither. A nice tool for edgeguarding when fully charged (I’m getting way ahead of myself, ain’t I).
Up Special: Mind Blast Yo~n [ブレインダムド] (Puyo Puyo~n)
Works like: Thrust Uppercut (Mii Brawler, multihit), Air Slash (Shulk, second, wider hit)
Tumblr media
A move that ascends, hits multiple times, then finishes off with a wide attack. That’s another way to use Mind Blast, wouldn’t you know! And, just like the down Smash variation, the first hit will deal big shield damage to shielding opponents.
Down Special: Diacute [ダイアキュート] (Madou Monogatari series)
Works like: Original
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her to-go mechanic and a power-up move, now that’s interesting. Most of them need you to get hit, but not this one. When used, it boosts up your next attack and ONLY your next attack (throws not included). Diacute acts as a chain starter. If your attack lands, you’ll start a chain!
Tumblr media
Every succeeding attack you connect (throws not included) increases your chain. You start with a 1.1x increase with the first charge, and with every successfully connected attack, Arle’s power will raise by 0.05 more, to a max. of 1.5x in damage and knockback by chain 7 onwards. But with every connected attack, the time you have to connect the next hit decreases. And if you miss your attack, time runs out, or you get hit during your chain, it’s back to zero. If you need more time, you can use Diacute for a slight time refill, but its effect will be less effective the more you use it.
Final Smash: Bayoen [ばよえ~ん]
Truly, it can’t be any other move, and this one needs no introduction. A wave of H A P P Y that hits around Arle, transporting the unlucky into a field where they’re pelted with all sorts of things, from flowers, to toys, to Nuisance Puyo, even, blasting them away once all is over. Diacute charges do not power up Bayoen though.
Número 3: Aesthetic, colors and other nifty stuff.
Tumblr media
Not covered earlier, her defense stances! Most of these are borrowed from Madou: Saturn. From top to bottom, left to right: spot dodge, roll (a sliding dodge), shield, parry, shield-break and air dodge. All taken from animations in her games.
Tumblr media
How about, one good UI mockup now? Well, check it out! Her Chain (or Rensa) counter would appear whenever you’d connect combos with Diacute, as displayed before.
Tumblr media
EDITOR’S NOTE MAJOR, MAJOR THANKS TO KAITE AGAIN BECAUSE IT’S THANKS TO KAITE THAT I CAN SAY Here’s her alternate colors! Inspired by Olimar and Lucina, every color references another Puyo Puyo character. Some well known, some obscure, and some that are definitely for the fans. Also, I wouldn’t go out and just make colors out of the colors of the Puyo, that’s ridiculous. (by the way I would totally play as green Ally Arle because would you just look at her)
Her design? It could be her Puyo Puyo Champions look, given the fact that it’s the one with the better proportions and the more standard design. However, I was suggested that her appearance could borrow elements from her Puyo Puyo!! Quest design, as it feels like a fusion of almost every Arle design ever. In my opinion, both would work just fine, but one of them has more flair than the other, you know?
And, yes, of course she would wear modesty shorts.
Her voice? The talented Mie Sonozaki for her Japanese version, and the awesome Erica Mendez for the overseas one.
Número 4: Reasons, special thanks and resources used.
If you made it this far, congratulations! I did this to not only release a weight from my soul, but to also partake in the creation of potential movesets. Every time I heard people say Arle wasn’t worthy of joining the fray, I knew I could find a way to include her vast story into a moveset that worked. Is this moveset perfect? Hell, no. It does reference plenty of Arle’s history, yes. But I think that with some good tweaks here and there, it could become something incredible, yes yes.
If this potential moveset sparked your interest, Celerity910 (on Discord) hooked up a pretty nice server to show support for Arle for Smash Bros., and I highly suggest you all to join in if you liked the concept I crafted! I’m pretty sure others have come up with other movesets, so it would be nice to see and compare.
Special thanks to my good Discord friend Kaite20 for helping me crank up this moveset. I couldn’t have done it without you checking and suggesting ideas for it (and also answering back when I needed help the most, you rock). Also, thanks to Marigio300X and TheSpatialWeeg for taking a look at the script before I eventually decided to just slap this here instead. You all were a tremendous help. Special thanks also to the people of Discord at Puyo Meet ‘N Greet, the English Puyo Puyo Community, and the lovely folks at The Edge of Forever for their support.
