Nuts and Dolts Week - Day 2 - Cuddling

Hey peeps!

Day 2 of NND Week! And such a cute prompt, too!

I had the MOST DIFFICULT TIME trying to get Ruby and Penny’s poses looking somewhat correct, and this composition took literally 9 tries to get right. It still looks a little wonky if you really think about it, but idc this is what I ended up with lmao

I was thinking they were on patrol and had set up a little campfire and while the area around them was beautiful (couldn't capture that unfortunately) they really only wanted to look at eachother and talk about what had happened while they were apart.

I really got art block in the middle of the week 😭

I just couldn't come up with any ideas for the last 3 days (excluding today) and even if I did I couldn't draw it at all ;_; and it frustrates me so much I really wanted to do all the prompts 😭 at least I sketched this before that blasted art block.

Anyway, here's feral Penny in "AU" if it was the other way around and at The Fall of Beacon it was Ruby who died... I don't like angst but... Yeah... ;_;

Originally written for Nuts and Dolts Week 2022 Day 8: Bonus AU Day. I thought they'd both absolutely thrive in a steampunk world.

It's been four years since Ruby and Penny fled Atlas, and they've built themselves a life in Vale. Despite Penny's happiness, she still wonders if the Atlesian military will find them. Ruby reassures her.

"Penny leaned over the bench to get a better look. "I think it looks wonderful, Ruby! It is incredibly elegant.""

Nuts and Dolts Week DAY 2 - Cuddling

Day 2 were we go, tagging @nuts-and-dolts-week and enjoy

Penny knew this plan would not be approved in any scenario as she walked through the dim halls of Atlas Academy. General Ironwood had been adamant about her staying within certain sectors of Atlas, and while the Academy was generally considered a safe area for her, he had expressly stated that she was to avoid any unnecessary trips around the academy. Sure, most of the Kingdom now knew about her true origin, but he felt it necessary to keep her from being swarmed by those who might prod too far into classified subjects. It was fine when she was escorted by Winter or the Ironwood himself, no one would dare approach. Now however she was alone, free for anyone to come up and cause an incident.

Yet she wasn’t overall concerned about being found. It was well around midnight when she began her journey through the darkened halls of the academy’s dorms. In her experience, most people preferred to be asleep than wandering about on the freezing nights of Solitas. No, she was mostly worried about what her father would think if she was caught. He had been doing his best to hide it but ever since the Vytal Tournament he had gotten more…concerned about where and what she was doing.

However, she needed to do this. Well, she didn’t need to, her form had been significantly upgraded, and given additional computation processing power, all in all, she should be superior to her old self. Yet ever since her revival, a hole of sorts developed. It wasn’t a physical hole, nor was there a gap in her programming. It was something, personal, something that kept her from feeling a hundred percent

Her only relief had been the arrival of Ruby and her friends. The times she was allowed to go on missions with them, that gaping hole would begin to disappear. Only to return with a vengeance when she had to recharge for the night. Thus, she generated her current plan. Well, less of a plan and more of a hypothesis.

She had calculated that by engaging in prolonged exposure to her friends then the hole would eventually seal itself shut. The problem was that her recharge took her away from them, so she would need to recharge with them. Of course, she couldn’t do it with all of them, too much hassle and most people preferred to sleep at such hours, not participate in a proof-of-concept plan. So instead, she had compiled all instances of her hanging out with her friends and calculated which one reduced said hole the most.

Happily, her research had led her to conclude that Ruby was the optimal person to run this experiment with. She was looking forward to spending more time with Ruby, not only for the greater chance of success but perhaps for learning more about the rest of the world. Ruby’s journey had fascinated her so much and she dearly wanted to hear more about it. Quickly she increased her pace down the halls, following her internal map of the academy

Soon she had finally arrived at the temporary dorm room that Team RWBY had been assigned. A quick hack and Penny slowly slid the door open. Darkness greeted her as her ears caught the breaths of the sleeping team. All four members were deep asleep, tired from a day of defending Mantle from Grimm attacks.

Quietly she made her way over to Ruby’s alcove, quickly climbing the ladder. Once she secured a spot on the bed’s edge, she finally looked at Ruby’s face. For a moment she wondered if it was right to disturb her friend for this. Ruby deserved a good night's sleep, and she really should have asked before sneaking in. However, it would be a waste if she just left now.

“Ruby,” she carefully voiced, crawling over to the top of the bed to help awaken Ruby. Ruby mumbled something before turning away. Penny frowned before scooting closer to the unconscious Ruby and whispering her name again.

Ruby knew her nights would rarely be easy ones. Everything that had been revealed to her had just compounded what terrors her nights could show. Granted she had gotten used to such nights; her mind was still hers. So, when her ears heard her name being called faintly, she turned away. Too many times that had led to some rough nights. However, the voice was persistent, and soon Ruby had to respond. Blearily she opens her eyes and stared straight into Penny’s face.

“Penny?” she mumbled as she waited for her eyes to deceive her. Only to get blasted by Penny’s voice as she backed up in a panic.

“HelloRubysorryforwakingyoubutI—” Ruby quieted her with a hand as she looked at the clock.

“Penny it's almost one, is everything alright?” she asked as she sat up and moved closer to Penny.

“Well, no, yes, maybe?” Penny squeaked; half awake Ruby’s glare was very intimidating and did not help with keeping her focused on why she was on Ruby’s bed. Ruby immediately shook her head, fully waking herself up. Once she realized that Penny was still a bit freaked out, she grabbed her friend’s hands in an attempt to give her something to focus on.

“Alright Penny what’s going on?” she asked again, and so Penny explained her problem, her hypothesized solution, and inquired if it was alright with Ruby for them to try it. Ruby smiled at her friend before activating her semblance.

Penny had no idea what happened one second, she was sitting staring at Ruby next she was lying down wrapped up in the blanket facing Ruby. She immediately noted that the hole she had been worried about had disappeared. However, her sensors now noted that her face was beginning to overheat.

Ruby giggled as she watched Penny’s face bloom in a familiar red. She knew what Penny was dealing with and was more than happy to cuddle with her for the night. She herself had sought out Yang when her mother…never returned. Tucking herself closer to Penny she yawned goodnight and fell into the warmth emanating from Penny’s body.

Penny meanwhile felt like there had to be more, that it wasn’t this simple. Yet Ruby had already fallen back asleep and so far, the hypothesis she made was proving to be true. All there was left was for her to shut down and enter her recharge state. So, she settled down pulled Ruby in closer, and powered down for the night. And so, the Reaper of Beacon and the Protector of Mantle drifted away in each other’s arms.

Nuts and Dolts Week - Day 8 - Bonus AU Day

Hey peeps!

And so, with this, Nuts and Dolts Week comes to a close.

So I figured I’d finish it off with an AU idea that’s very dear to me, which is Ever After High X RWBY! Ever After High was a series of Dolls made by Mattel who were the Sons and Daughters of Fairytale characters, and went to school to eventually grow up to become said Fairytale characters.

I was OBSESSED with EAH as a kid, and still kinda am, so I figured I’d mash my two favorite fairytale series together.

Here we have Ruby Rose as Cerise Hood, Daughter of Red Riding Hood, and Penny Polendina as Cedar Wood, Daughter of Pinocchio.

Not much shipping material here, but Cerise and Cedar were roommates in the series so…

Oh mah god they were roommates~
