How r u a grown ass adult and still antiship. Like you do know that “proship” literally just means anti harassment. You deadass sound like “DNI if you’re not a bully”. Just say “comship/darkship dni”
hello anon, thank you for your lovely message. how are you?
first of all, i personally have never directly clarified my position on this topic, I am uncertain if your comments pertain solely to the posts I engage with, as I do not recall specifically discussing this matter before. I usually tend not to include DNI guidelines in my posts, mostly because I do not care or check who engages with my profile since my main aim is to have fun here. furthermore, I believe in the principle of "live and let live." while I may still have personal preferences, I fully support individuals' rights to express their shipping preferences without judgement. you can ship whoever you want, I don't care. I appreciate the diversity of opinions and respect everyone's right to express themselves as long as there is RESPECT. my concern lies primarily with bullying, which I find unacceptable IN ANY CASE. maybe I should make this point more clear in my intro.
personally, I have encountered numerous negative experiences with this group of people, which has understandably fostered a sense of discomfort for me when it comes to initiating conversations with them. this isn't a generalization, but rather a personal reflection on my interactions over time. of course I'm aware not all people act the same.
what I won’t tolerate in my interactions is indeed BULLYING, especially from those who have a closed and presumptuous mindset. I want to clarify that I don’t hold any disdain for what others choose to ship; in fact, it doesn’t bother me at all, as long as they let me to exist peacefully. instead, your message about freedom of thought came across as rude and impolite, and frankly, I don’t understand what you aimed to achieve with that tone. it felt rather dismissive and aggressive, which certainly doesn’t foster open dialogue.
one thing that has always baffled me is the pervasive hate within this community, which devolves into a childish and pointless war. it’s often justified by acts of bullying from both sides, and it even includes theft of others' content. I’m not pointing fingers at anyone specifically, but if someone is looking for blame, that's on them. this includes sending anonymous hate messages, which is unacceptable. it’s time we recognize how sick and deplorable those behaviors really are. I have consistently chosen to stay out of these dramas, and I have no desire to get involved, not now, not in the future. I firmly believe that maturity means allowing everyone the freedom to make their own choices, as long as they are respectful to others. I just want to have fun and that’s what I intend to do.
in conclusion, I believe I have fully expressed my main points. I think it was just as easy for you in anonymity, right anon?
have a nice day.

tw dr//üg use
damn. the fact that i only bought my first bag in late summer and now at the end of the year ive gone through over 10g of coke.... like some of it was shared with 🌘 bc. im a gentleman and she helped me get it. so i cant say exactly how much went just to me but. at the v least 10 on the dot
started with a .5 and then a g and then frm there it was "this 8ball then i stop" and i only stopped bc i had nobody. and then there were more hookups and... 2 more 8balls but... i got shorted on the last one and im p sure he only gave us 3g on the dot at the most (tbh. prob less than that) so now i will be taking my scale to the next time. bc theres GONNA be a next time.
im so cooked chat. sooooo cooked.
chronic fatigue and multiple disabilities and depression and other mental illnesses living alone with minimal support anywhere but finances is.... fucking rough. and when im on coke its almost bearable. at the very least bc i can KEEP WORKING bc if i wasnt on it constantly half of this year... with our schedule?? and the huge increase in customers at the shop? i wouldnt have survived. were STILL late sometimes even with the blow so like. how tf are we supposed to do this without it! kinda fucked unless i get diagnosed and get scrip addy. but nah its not rly any kind of option bc thats money i dont have and i have more important shit to diagnose if i was gnna pay for that. ill just keep wrecking my body. what choice do i have? i continue doing this bullshit or i go die in a heap bc i cant support myself
ive still been taking the 7ohmz this whole time. thats rly never gnna change for a long ass time bc. i cant function with the level of pain my disabilities give me. if i get off them and have to deal with EXTRA pain frm the withdrawl? i gotta have a genuine 2 weeks off if i want off of them. ive def cut down a lot. but like. im still maining the downers with uppers combo like its my job (basically is atp)
i need that shit
this whole experience has changed my entire perspective on this drug. both of them rly but mainly coke. very much a love hate relationship. bc i love her and shes the best. but also shes NOT fucking worth it and will destroy your life. but i would still do it all again knowing this. at least theres not rly physical withdrawls so. i rly CAN stop any time. but i dont fucking WANT to. bc the mental addiction is bested only by its cousin crack and their weird uncle meth (which ive never smoked. but i have taken speed pills many times. and i dont wanna lose friends bc. i would if they found out just on principle bc that is a clear boundary. but i rly fuckinf would. i made so much fucking art on that shit and was working SO hard.)
i just rly hope i get her back soon its been not even a full week im fucking DYING i need it for the rest of my shifts SO bad im fucking exhausted and im getting more sleep than i have like all year consistently too. still EXHAUSTED to the point of having to drag myself around and im sure the 7ohmz isnt helping me there.
ok post over
please universe if u dont want me to kms. get me that 8ball TONIGHT

the kitsch diet part II
part one alr posted!! this chunk is about 3,000~ words long... let me know what u think :-) thank u all for all the luv already!!! looks like I really will hit 31 followers by easter!!!!!!!!
  Who is the Kitsch Girl?
I think this is more loosely defined, but The Chic Diet did a truly admirable way of reducing a girl to her YSL bag and her really skinny legs. Now, that implies an archetype, or a population in a specific location. I think kitschness is kind of the niche you fill when you’re not really much of anything else, sort of your own conglomerate of mainstream-specific. One major requirement, though, is being a little too into something somewhat uncool. And the whole illusion falls apart if you have any sort of outward insecurity. See, the Kitsch Girl is somewhat undefinable because she is so much of everything. She exists in multitudes, in a way that is also quite simple to understand; think of a list of axioms, or principles to live by. And now add a section to each one that says “but…” to make a collection of verified exceptions. Say, the kitsch girl will never wear jeans. But she thrifted this pair of vintage flares she just loves. She doesn’t reply to texts efficiently, but sometimes she will within a couple seconds. No mascara, no dinner forks, candles are to be collected not burned; but that was a gift, or something. It’s not personal, of course, those are just the contradictions she exists in. Don’t try to understand it, the enigma is essential to the facade. Or maybe she just lives like this, and her character is so homogenous with her inner world there’s no sense in trying to separate it. You have to have a little bit of an individuality complex about the whole ordeal, which is normally so eugh, but if you’re kitschy enough it works on you. Trust! The Kitsch girl is not someone unlikeable, but amiable and well heeled. I double checked that last one, assuming it meant liked by most, but apparently means affluent. I suppose that is an aspect of the kitsch girl too, having seemingly endless frivolous expenses with no real strain, but that’s not important right now. People that don’t like her think so out of jealousy, or something. Envious that her clothes are all kind of shake-it-up-esque and her highlights desperately need touching up, but she still seems so enthralled with the whole of life… How does she enjoy her own company so much when other people want to know her better? Doesn’t she feel weird about blowing people off to make a joke about reading Kafka in the bath? Why would she document her cluttered, unexciting life on Instagram so delicately, so vibrantly? Of course, no one would say this to her face because they are really baseless claims. She’s nice, generous, and valuable to have as a friend. Trade-offs exist, as they do with anyone. But I like thinking it’s easier to overlook a forgotten birthday when your kitschy best friend gave you a multi strand pearl necklace to celebrate the welcome breeze of June. Or some other made-up holiday. She is so unassuming if you’re not really looking. Girls want in on her inner circle. Or they just don’t care. Nothing wrong with being liked or thought of naught, for the most part. Boys are either enthralled or repulsed by her. Her doctor knows her as something of a hypochondriac, but only minorly. It’s just carpal tunnel, don’t worry… The sales staff at CVS turn a blind eye when she slips an eyeliner pencil into her tote bag. She shoplifts on occasion, just to see if she still knows how. But she is not a shoplifter. $9 here and $6.45 there doesn’t really add up to much. Everywhere she goes, she makes a tertiary friend or two. The term of friend is loosely used here, of course. But it is nice to tell a stranger you like her earrings. Or her phone case is so fun, is it Wildflower? The kitsch girl has an eye for this kind of detail. Simply put, she is sort of unspectacular. But in a way that makes you sort of wish you knew her better.
Phone cases
The phone case is, like, religious for the kitsch girl. Sorry, but there’s just no other accessory as flippant and expensive and single-purpose as a trendy little iPhone case with some semitacky stickers plastered over the design. I used to have an iPhone XS- extrasmall-  with like, 18 phone cases. It was kind of a sordid affair. I jest, but really… owning that many phone cases was kind of sick. We get it, you are frivolous and spontaneous and sooo stylish! Stop posting mirror selfies on your Instagram story, your crush isn’t going to see it. Kidding again. Having an extensive collection of phone cases is just so fun because while attainable, most people just simply do not partake in it. That makes you kitschy and unique. I really thought I had more to say about the IDEA of the phone case, but I guess in practice it is all very, very simple. You can slide your driver’s license in the back of a clear case. At what point does it stop being cool to have legal operational control of a vehicle? I don’t display mine because I don’t really like the photo. I look round. In the eyes but also just in general, swollen, unglamorous. Whatever. Not like I drive a Nissan or anything. I drive my *Mom’s* Nissan. Playing Bladee in the car seems sacrilegious. She would hate it.Back to phone cases. Sonix ones are cute but kind of overpriced retail- unless you have like, an iPhone 12 Pro Max or whatever the fuck is new this year, just go to Winner’s. They always have Xs and 11 cases. I had a cherry one for my previous phone, like the exact one Lana Del Rey had? Thank god I sold it before she got outed as a copfucker or whatever. Casetify is for an inadvertent flex. Flexing your lame, lame taste. Sorry, I know you bought it because you liked it, but what you failed to consider is just how un-Kitsch they are. SO common, and they advertise on Instagram. Sorry, I just can’t get into it! Kind of how I just never liked the Brandy Amara tanks. Or lowtop converse. Otterbox is just distressing. Like, if my boyfriend gave me an otterbox phone case I would probably break up with him because somebody clearly isn’t paying attention- one of my favorite, potentially overused joke is how Otterbox cases are the equivalent of orthopedic insoles. Sorry but if you have poor arch support or whatever, but no pain is worth giving up a good pair of Margiela slingback tabi heels. Obviously I couldn’t afford that right now because all loose income goes directly to Wildflower and my cig boy. But like, one day. I hope you want to punch me in the face a little bit after reading that.  If Wildflower isn’t your thing, at least have the decency to get a beaded phone strap. But not from String Ting. Pray tell you aren’t keeping score, but they are one of my several parasocial enemies. That should have been ME collaborating with Wildflower! Should have been ME mailing shit to Caroline Calloway (more on her later, but she is the only blue check I follow. I adore her! I was on her patreon for a bit I thinkl!!) …. Side note. Phone cases are cute but there is no way to properly protect your laptop without looking just absurd or colossally lame. The foam sleeves… ick.
Having the shittiest music taste ever
So like, here’s the thing. I’m an Apple Music user, which sort of reinstates my status as an unironic My Bloody Valentine Hyperpop Death Grips kinda gal. Read; volcel. My most recent conquest ended up being a huge L on my part, but also… I totally dodged a bullet. The guy had an iPhone 11 (female trait) and didn’t know who Rei Brown was, which just seemed suspicious given his Niche. I just know he had a “making out playlist” comprising entirely of like, Joji. Which isn’t a bad thing I guess but so unembarrassing it horseshoes back to being humiliating.Like I said. Having the worst music taste. It’s nice how subjective and deeply personal your music taste can be; no one really Needs to know you’re a die hard drainer. But there’s also no point in being a die-hard drainer and Not capitalizing off it somehow. I added it up and I have well over 150 hours of just Bladee and Yung Lean. Which is so yass? The more I write, using myself as a case study, I realize just how desperately jobless I am. And Yogenfruz isn’t even hiring! UGH!I think there is something very kitschy about liking hyperpop in the least ironic, least obnoxious way. Sort of feeds into a “I’m not like other girls” thing, but I mean… That’s kind of the idea of kitsch, isn’t it? Be a little different but also the very same as your lipgloss brethren?!Side note. If you make monthly playlists I am genuinely kind of afraid of you. That is just so organized!! I just make playlists with esoteric titles and then make a new one when I’m sick of the stuff on the last. I have exhausted most genres but I think my favorite is the “I’m wearing f****ng air forces and my teeth are SO white”. Guess what genre it is. Or don’t, but it’s probably what you think is. Okay, moving on….
Curating a scent
I like thinking I smell like mango and peach, Glossier you, whatever citrus is in that Lush shower jelly and mint 5Gum. But of course it is probably less distinct and just kind of generally fruit-floral-mint. Anyway. I think Glossier You is the perfect scent for anyone with a rather elementary understanding of the whole.. Perfume business. Every bottle of intentional fragrance I own was made via aesthetic choices… it really helps that Glossier You is so cute And so universal. Now, Glossier is kind of interesting to me because it really is at the intersection of cheugy and kitsch. Kind of basic, overplayed, unspectacular. But also…. Often popular things are popular because they are good. Glossier has excellent customer suurv, they ship SO fast (and no import duties! W!) and their stuff is just so sweet and nice if not unoriginal, in kind of the same way strawberry ice cream is. Which is still my favorite, of course, especially if there’s a vegan option. I was talking about Glossier. What the hell! It’s really worth trying out. A huge principle of kitsch is just… having as many possible layers and appendages to your composure as possible. And adding a signature scent just really completes that! When curating your own, I say this as a complete amateur, know-nothing; make it something that comes kind of naturally to Your Character. Like, I’m just not a Chanel No 5 kind of girl. Odds are you aren’t either. My bottle (before she asked for it back when I told her I didn’t use it, in exchange for a Nordstrom’s gift card) was from my grandmother. Ummm.. Yeah, I really have no expertise in curating a scent. But it is nice to have a signature. And having a bottle displayed on your dresser next to your aughties McDonald milkshake themed beanie baby and a handful of lip products is just way too fun! This is the kind of girl I am, everyone! Cluttered, but prioritizing pretty-delicate things!
Cheugyism
Cheugy is a relatively new word that has unfortunately wormed into my vocabulary to replace “uncouth”. Which I use to mean graceless or tacky, but if that isn’t what it means…. Don’t tell me. That would hurt more than weighing myself after a “feast” slash pastry binge at my dear Grandmothe’s house. Like I was saying. Cheugy. It’s sort of a fucked up concept to me because it is a critique on consumption, but not the pace or volume or magnitude of it. But rather… the idea of not being “good” enough at engaging in microtrends, or involvement in the fast paced fashion cycle. Don’t get me started on TikTok, or do, but… yeah,. No. That will require a cigarette because I’m so sorry, but writing a thinkpiece on social media is so lowbrow I would need to find about six ways to aesthetically counteract it…. Moving on.  I think the idea of cheugy is good, we really do need a word to simply and efficiently define “out of date/uninspired/lame”. But the way it is used to shame others for not liking the same trends or whatever is kind of gross. If you use cheugyism to put other people down and not as a neutral identifier umm… you will become what you fear. Sorry, that’s what happens. Some things that I think are cheugy or embarrassing, or just not part of my stylistic lexicon are… 1. Hooded or zip up clothing, or things with a large graphic on the back. Bingo if it's all three! I just can’t get behind it. Side note, my summer home outfit is brandy sweats and a tube top (Urban Outfitters tank I ripped the straps off) and a large cardigan that should have belonged to a stoner, but probably didn’t. I can dunk on bulky, uninspired clothes because I would honest to God NEVER be caught DEAD out of the house wearing any of it. I’m so serious. Next segment should be about the kitsch girl’s inadvertent affinity for diuretics. Remind me….. One of the ports of my laptop is dead. Not really sure what to do about that.
Eye makeup and what it means to me….
Personally, I am one of those people who never wears foundation and kind of has a complex about it. The kitsch girl wears fluffy eyelashes and owns a plethora of sparkly eyeliner. Or maybe she doesn’t, but she has something distinct and a little ritzy, if not haphazard. We all saw Euphoria and it like, totally imprinted on us. The way glitter sits on your face after a long day is so resplendent. When it’s shining and a little bit melted off from your long, semi-productive day… ugh! Just made for film. Pictures on film. But not the Prequel app. I keep getting fucking ads for it. But it’s so embarrassing. Like, isn’t the whole point of film the authenticity of the moment? The texture of the afternoon? Why would you fabricate that? Prequel is just so cheugy. More on that later. But anyhow. Wearing a ton of eye makeup kind of fits with the idea of film too I think. Like, look at you, in the moment. With your strip lash falling off! It’s all so tres-chic. Plus, for whatever reason, it’s kind of unique or notably dedicated to ~Pull up to the function~ with more eye makeup on than everyone else. Sorry, but it really doesn’t take that long! But yes I will gracefully accept your praise… it’s kind of like the dropshipping of complements if you think about it. Easy to source with little to no effort in the curating. Side note, lashes are like $20 for 40 weeks if you cut them in half and use each pair about 5 times. You could probably do more but I lose track. How the fuck is it almost June? I was trudging through the snow to check the mail for my Online Ceramics shirt just last week, I swear. The trick to cutting your lashes (the way I do it anyway) is pretty simple. Get out two lashes that are symmetrical. Find the middle and cut one slightly to the left and one slightly to the right. This means you have two sets (one set is a little more dramatic than the other but at least they are symmetrical) with longer outer edges. Glue this to the outer corner of your eye and you will look so Composed… obsessed with how this layers with three eyeliner tails (one traditional one pointing up and one pointing down directly below it, sort of like the tail light on a 2019 Lexus UX) and one below your eye, like a clown. Fun, irrelevant fact, is the first time I added this third tail to my eye makeup, my dad had just gotten home from the hospital because he was sure he had like appendicitis or something and it was actually.. Not that. Typical indie hypochondriac. He made me bring him cottage cheese on a plate with a teaspoon that evening. I put black pepper on it for flair, which he hated. Walking up and down stairs with a plate of cottage cheese is much more imprinting than most of the multiplication tables. Don’t forget to use a bright shimmer eyeshadow in your inner corner. It really opens up your eyes. I recommend Too Faced.  One time I got a little bit too high and tried to film an “editorial” makeup tutorial. You will never, ever, ever see that video. But I essentially covered my whole eyelid in the ABH shadow “palermo” and smudged out the edges with a tan Tartelette Toasted shade, coupled with my long-expired Milk Makeup holographic stick. Lopsided lashes and near-blinding eyeliner experience aside, it was kind of cool. My point is, you really cannot go wrong with an arsenal of shimmers, taupey mattes and a good eyeliner pen.

Why is Kylo even considered abusive tho
...... hahaha. uhm. this is gonna be fun.
(ps: anyone who hates kylo or reylo pls skip this post okay? k.)
people have decided that any relationship (not even romantic, any) that’s like, even moderately problematic or not healthy or in between a villain and a hero is inherently abusive, because of course EVERYTHING is abusive now, and villains that aren’t, er, how we shall say, Approved By Tumblr Standards, are inherently horrible abusive people;
kylo is, sadly, technically a mix of All the things tumblr finds automatically problematic in someone, ie that he’s: a) white, b) a cis man, c) comes from a **privileged background** (let’s just say that for the sake of simplicity), d) has obvious anger issues, e) a villain, f) heterosexual as far as we know (or better: we don’t know he’s not, but you know that for people on tumblr when they hate someone and their sexuality isn’t specified straight becomes the default because obviously if u r evil then you have to be straight. ofc kylo could be bi for all we know, but never mind that, right?), g) not conventionally attractive (or, in tumblr lingo, UGLY, because of course everyone’s canon of beauty is the same!!), which means that given point one above, he’s of course abusive, not even a shred of doubt given. (of course if one or more of these fail to happen, tumblr does the contrary and excuses whatever the bad person does but I’ll shut up before I say things I’ll regret.)
which means that of course any rship he could have with rey is abusive when it’s fucking dumb because in order for a relationship to be abusive you actually have to know that person and be in a relationship of any kind with them - your parents can be abusive (but they’re your parents and you grew up with them), a friendship can be abusive (but then you have had to know this person and be friends with them), a romantic relationship can be (but you have to actually be in love with them or at least be together), and kylo and rey have no such relationship because they met, he captured her, they had their mind-force argument where he tried to get inside her head and she got into his (compare that with what happened with poe I mean XDDD) and then they fought and the next time they met each other it was through the force bond and then you can say they developed a relationship.... where she was the one pretty much taking the first step most of the time and where she saw that there was some good in him? I mean, there’s no bloody way any of that falls under abusive relationship. is it problematic? obviously it has problematic elements because any relationship you have with a dude or woman you fought with/tried to kill/is on your opposite side of the fence can’t not have problematic elements. is it 100% fluff unicorns and rainbows? no. but like, from that to say he’s abusive in general is ridiculous, at most he could be to hux but I mean kylo and hux are generally terrible to each other in turn and that relationship is your usual rival/hateship that’s been around since the beginning of times. at most it’s mutually toxic if you ask me, and anyway no one who ships either reylo or kylux goes around saying it’s The Purest Ship, or at least no one who’s not the usual bad apple that you find in any shipper group.
this also is a perfect mirror of how people on tumblr can’t distinguish what’s coded as abusive and what’s not, because if there is one relationship in the new trilogy that’s explicitly coded as abusive it’s.... snoke and kylo, and kylo is not the abusive part, he’s the abused part of it. I mean, tlj made it overtly clear and the point is that whether you like it or not this guy has been groomed/tormented/lied to by snoke (who is, uh, THE BONAFIDE BAD GUY I mean guys it’s star wars being the palpatine stand-in in the dark side part should say everything really) same as palpatine did to anakin and guess what kylo wants to be anakin/thinks that he’s honoring his grandfather’s footsteps it’s kind of heavily implied, and while obviously there’s no overt sexual subtext because it’s still a disney movie made for kids too I’m fairly sure it’s kind of very subtly implied and other people wrote about it more in-depth than me, but tldr: kylo’s issues (he’s unstable, he’s angry, he doesn’t really know what he wants, he’s volatile and blah blah blah) are all direct consequences of a) being heavily force sensitive, b) feeling like his family failed him (and luke AGREES because wow what did he do before they fought in tlj? apologize to him for failing him, and if you don’t think that han let him kill him also because he thought he failed him idk what movie you watched), c) being groomed and lied to by the evil bad guy of the situation for most of his life, which makes... him... an abuse victim.
of course, tumblr has a really unhealthy approach to how you get to be an abuse victim, which is a whole other wasp nest, but basically on this bloody website anyone who doesn’t meet the Good Victim Standard (ie: they fight against their abuser immediately, they do Good Things, they Show Clear Morals and it’s obvious that They Are Good Guys) is automatically Not A Good Victim and is therefore denied any basic empathy/decency, and anyone who tries to be nice to them or to help them out is there to help the villain’s storyline HOW BAD, OR, if the Bad Victim dares being a man, of course it’s all OH MY GOD CHARACTER X IS GETTING SACRIFICED ON THE ALTAR OF Y’S STORYLINE AND THEIR MANPAIN, because of course if you’re a man you can’t, like, suffer, without it being manpain and not, like, legitimate feelings. which means that poor kylo cannot win because even when the story is coded otherwise and rey helping him out/wanting to reach the good part of him/seeing him as ben solo/etc people don’t see it as, like, rey being a good person and regular character development (nvm that the entire point of the light side in SW is, like, forgiveness, but okay then), but as her character being sold off for the male’s development or whatever else they think it is. which is obviously not true, but the fact that you take a character who has being a decent person in their basic traits and think that in order to Be A Good Person they should want to murder their adversary who is most obviously coded as someone who needs help and has issues but not as the ultimate bad guy rather than, like, did what rey did in tlj ie trying to help them out, says more about whichever anti thinks such things (ie: nothing good) than about the sw writers or whatever. I mean, I unfollowed people for reblogging fanart where rey killed kylo and finn/poe were doing the cheerleading and not just because I don’t want that kinda toxicity but also because it’s absolutely OOC that finn, poe or rey would cheerlead each other over murdering anyone that’s not snoke or the likes -
ah, but wait, who killed snoke?
I mean, given that kylo killed the guy who abused him for years because he threatened to murder the one person who had taken the effort to be nice to him and see his side of the story I think that it’s fairly obvious that he’s not abusing anyone himself and that next movie he’s going back to the light side no question also because they’re not gonna kill the last character with direct skywalker lineage around.
but of course most people around here can’t see past their own preconceptions and don’t understand that if you want to care for mentally ill people/abuse victims you also have to give a fuck about the kylo rens and not just about the finns. let’s just put it out there, I care about finn more than I care about kylo and I’m light side trash so of course I’m into the character and I love that finn understood at once he couldn’t kill people and defected and I love the journey he had, but you can’t just support the people that immediately see the way out and do things the way Good People Are Supposed To Behave. because if you support the finns but ditch the kylo rens then you really will end up with horrible people, because if someone who has the potential to not be a terrible person is left to their own thing without anyone trying to help them out of course they’ll convince themselves they’re not worth it and the more time passes the worst they get. and you can’t go around parading that you care about victims/mentally ill people/abuse victims/whatever if you only think the good ones are worth it. it’s such a calvinist way of thinking that makes my skin crawl tbh but then again tumblr is puritan calvinism hell so what do we even expect.
tldr: because tumblr is calvinist af without knowing it and because people have decided to give up on text comprehension for the joy of being asses to anyone who actually enjoys fictional villains, characters who aren’t necessarily the heroes and the likes.
and before anyone decides to murder me for the above and thinks that I’m a ride or die kylo fan or whatever, I’ll close this saying that: in tfa I really couldn’t care less about kylo (really, I was 100% indifferent), my favorite new trilogy character is actually poe which I find way more interesting/relatable/whatever than i could find kylo, my main ship investment in the new trilogy is finn/poe and before tlj I couldn’t care less for reylo (after... well it’s obvious I’m shipping it, but I started when it turned out to have infinite h/c potential/redemption arc potential because that’s what appeals to me in ships, I don’t care for mutual rivalships/hateships or villain/hero ships just for that, I only am into it if there’s the whole potential h/c angle so I wasn’t into it from the get-go). but I’ve liked enough characters who had stuff in common with kylo to at least recognize the pattern and I’d be fairly not coherent if I stanned theon and hated kylo on principle. ah, and I don’t find kylo particularly attractive either (honest I’d take oscar or john over adam any moment if I had to pick based on attractiveness level to me), but I also don’t feel the need to shame poor adam driver over it, especially when I think it’s a very good thing that people find attractive a type that’s not very hollywood-common and that’s actually considered not pretty/beautiful by canonical standards, so I mean, who cares. but it’s a question of intellectual honestly. *shrug*

As communities age, a mythology tends to build up around their origins, with past eras vaguely alluded to as “golden ages.” I’ve seen this happen with reddit’s /r/visualnovels, a place I moderated during its most transformative stage, so I thought I’d offer my insider’s take on its history: what we’d hoped to achieve as moderators, the unintended side-effects of our policies, and why I think /r/visualnovels is stagnating these days. Given my acrimonious departure from the subreddit, you should take this with a grain of salt, but hopefully it’ll be interesting~
The Birth of /r/visualnovels
Tumblr media
The very first posts on /r/visualnovels.
/r/visualnovels was founded in late 2009 by /u/Hpdarkman525 (the former account of /u/gambs), who made one post about the upcoming Umineko ep5 fan translation and then promptly forgot about the sub. At this time, the VN fandom consisted primarily of those who had learned Japanese to read VNs, and those who wished they had. Official localisations were almost non-existent, and the fandom hung off the words of the few fan translators. Knowing about VNs felt like knowing a secret, like a secret handshake to be acknowledged as a fellow western otaku.
This didn’t really change until early 2012 with the release of Katawa Shoujo. We now had a Western VN that was free, easy to install (no fiddling with system locale), pretty well written (no cliche cries of “baka” or “onii-chan”), and handled a delicate subject (disability and self-identity) with a sensitivity that really spoke to a lot of gamers. The optional nature of the adult content helped attract horny teenagers while still retaining an air of respectability. KS managed something no other VN had: attention from the mainstream gaming crowd. It drew a huge wave of new fans to the medium, among which were /u/coldacid and /u/Kuiper who became mods on /r/visualnovels and began to promote it.
While the influx of new members gave birth to the community, with newbies becoming veterans, the continued dominance of KS in the VN scene began to wear thin (it wasn’t until 2016 that the number of /r/visualnovels subscribers outnumbered /r/katawashoujo). Especially grating for veterans was the cry of KS as “the best VN ever written” from those who had only ever read that one VN. The constant stream of “what do I read after KS” and rudimentary technical questions on getting Japanese VNs working drowned out the rare news posts or broader discussion threads. The mod team had a hands-off attitude to it, they’d only remove spam or blatant trolling. This only changed in early 2014 when a relatively unknown user, /u/insanityissexy, requested a mod position...
The Rise of Insanity
Tumblr media
Insanityy was a member of the old-guard, being drawn to the medium for Japanese VNs and caring little for what she saw as a pale-imitation in Western VNs. With no regard for the old mods, she singlehandedly brought order to a community that had been lawless. She began with a ban on posts for technical support questions and VN recommendation requests. Instead, they should be asked in the new weekly questions thread so as to clear up the front page for news posts and more substantial discussion threads.
While this move was broadly welcomed by most of the subreddit regulars, it caused some disruption as activity on the sub plummeted. With the western VN scene so small, news was rare and the number of daily posts dropped from 2-4 to just 1. While some grumbled, others were enthused in having an active moderator who cared about the sub. /u/kowzz started a discussion thread on what we could do to improve activity on the sub, and from that discussion he started the weekly Sunday discussion posts and I started the weekly “what are you reading” posts. Unlike the questions sticky, the intention wasn’t to curtail activity outside of these weekly posts, but to provide a supplement to the usual discussions and encourage users to comment more.
With such regular discussion posts, users started to bump into each other more often and a sense of community began to build. On a personal level, I also grew to know insanityy better as we exchanged dozens of increasingly lengthy PMs (so much so that each reply wouldn’t fit within the 10k character limit, we had to send our replies in 3 parts), with us quickly becoming close friends.
Tumblr media
Later that year, I proposed an overhaul of the user flairs. The subreddit only offered a basic vndb icon. I wanted to expand that to hundreds of options with a larger profile picture offset to the side of a user’s post as a way to personalise each user. With enough options, I hoped it’d be easier to identify users at a glance and it’d add some character to the subreddit. I was admitted to the mod team to oversee the flair changes, but was soon upgraded to full mod status after a few months on insanityy’s urging.
The two of us fed off each other’s passion as we sought to build a more active, mature, and compassionate community. We never paid any heed to the old mods, mod policy was discussed between us on google hangouts and implemented immediately.
To foster a sense of community, we aimed to have a community event once a month: best X contests, census surveys, recommendation charts, fanart contests, halloween/april fool themes being among just some of the activities we organised. We even got Mangagamer to sponsor some contests with free VNs.
We downplayed the seedier parts of the medium, nukige news was banned and discussions on “fapping” were frowned upon. Neither of us were against porn, we’re both fans, but we feared it’d attract a more neckbeard-type audience.
We aggressively went after trolls, but not by banning them. We had automod automatically remove comments from users prone to cause drama, then we’d manually approve non-trollish comments. That way everyone was able to participate in our community, but bad behaviour wasn’t rewarded with lots of attention.
In the following year, insanityy asked the inactive older mods to resign. Kuiper recognised that he was no longer needed and respectfully stepped down. Coldacid said his inactivity was only temporary and he’d be back, but later left reddit for voat as part of an anti-censorship protest. Gambs asked us to drop the subject as he didn’t want to step down, so we carried on ignoring him.
We also added new members to the mod team: /u/FunwithGravity for his knowledge of Japanese, /u/Cornetto_Man because he got along with everyone, and /u/Avebone because he was active at times when the rest of us were asleep. They were added primarily to approve posts mistakenly removed by automod when me and insanityy were afk and had little input on mod policy.
Everything seemed to be going great, we had a growing community that we got along with, trolls were few and far between, and our moderation seemed popular. Then we got a modmail suggesting we try out a new chat program called Discord...
Discord on Discord
Tumblr media
When /u/Kowzz and /u/Arcanus44 suggested creating a Discord server, we were initially skeptical. It sounded just like irc, and the /r/visualnovels irc channel had been comatose for years. However Kowz and Arc promised to take care of it for us, Kowz would create the server and Arc would drum up interest. So in Sept 2015, Arc hosted a “meet n’ greet” in voice chat on Discord. While it was by most accounts a success and quite popular, we got some complaints about inappropriate conduct by a couple of users and decided that if this Discord server was going to be linked with /r/visualnovels, we’d need to take an active hand in making sure it maintained our standards.
Kowz was happy to have us onboard, making us admins on Discord. It all seemed smooth, but underneath the surface, the seed of turmoil had been planted in our differing beliefs on who owned the server. Kowz and Arc considered themselves the owners and we were partners, while we considered them to have created the server on our behalf and that it’d run on our principles. Up until then, we’d not had any disagreements on mod policy. Me and insanityy would talk an issue out, if we agreed, we’d propose it to the rest of the mod team and vote on it. We’d picked mods who generally thought the same as us, so votes were normally unanimous. That wasn’t the case with Discord. Kowz and Arc had different ideals on how to run a community, and our usual resolution process of voting felt unfair to them as we outnumbered them 5 to 2.
The problem only got worse with time as insanityy hated arguments so she avoided the staff discussions on Discord and popped in only to vote. Arc and Kowz felt increasingly marginalised by this and that their opinion wasn’t being heard. This led to a standoff where Kowz and Arc demanded their 2 votes should count for as much as the rest of us combined, while we /r/visualnovels mods threatened to create a new server unless we kept one vote each. Discussions got heated until Kowz and Arc eventually backed down. In protest, they chose to stop participating as mods.
While Discord helped bring friends together, it also brought those that disliked each other together. It’s easy to ignore someone on reddit as its tree structure allows for parallel conversations, but the format of Discord makes that harder. This started to become a problem on the server, especially as Discord attracted a different type of user to the subreddit, those who had little patience for the more verbose and patient discussions of the subreddit. We got complaints from the subreddit veterans about some of the newbies but we weren’t sure what to do. Being disliked isn’t a bannable offense, but it was driving away some valued community members.
We didn’t want to create a separate server that split the community, so our misguided solution was the creation of a hidden channel: #sub_regs (a.k.a. the fanclub) that was invite only and accessed via the tableflipper role. The hope was that it’d serve as a backup channel for when #general was annoying and that it’d keep the community veterans on the server. However it ended up encouraging an elitist attitude that divided the community further.
The Fall of /r/visualnovels
Tumblr media
With many of the friendly conversations and community atmosphere moving to Discord, the subreddit began to suffer. Inside jokes that were incomprehensible to those not on Discord were frequent, and the community split between those using Discord and those not.
There was also a degree of burnout among the mods. It’s inevitable for all mods, you spend long enough dealing with the worst of the community, the trolls and the spammers, and you begin to develop an us-vs-them mentality. You retreat from the community and draw closer to your fellow mods, looking down upon the normal users. We mods gradually stopped being members of the community and instead became overseers.
Then there was my messy departure from the sub in April 2016. Due to a range of factors: financial difficulties, gender dysphoria, and some toxic “friends,” I became deeply depressed and tried to commit suicide. My fellow subreddit mods (and best friend insanityy) decided the best response was to out me as transgender, block me on social media, and ban me from the subreddit I’d loved so deeply. Insanityy never spoke to me again.
The rest of this is speculation, I was no longer an insider, but from my perspective it looked like this event accelerated the emotional distance insanityy felt from the subreddit as she stopped caring about the community. She tried to carry on as normal at first, running a few contests, maintaining the animated banners I’d once made, but her heart wasn’t in it. She resigned later that year.
With her went the desire to innovate, to improve the community. The remaining mods were followers, not leaders. They could maintain some cosmetic updates and copy the old contests, but they were unable to do anything new. They enlarged the mod team with an additional four members, but it only increased the sense of inertia and made it even harder to get anything done. The subreddit began to feel stale.
The mod team had also become unbalanced, where once me and insanityy spoke up for minority tastes in EVNs and otomes, now the mod team was dominated by Japanese VN fans just as the VN scene was increasingly embracing EVNs. The subreddit felt more elitist than ever just as the medium had never been more diverse.
Unintended Side Effects
While our policies may have made sense at the time, some of the decisions me and insanityy had made began to have a detrimental impact on the subreddit:
We’d brought on Automod to help remove posts when only me and insanityy had to manage everything. We found having a bot leave the removal comment sparked fewer arguments with OP than if one of us did it, and it was more effective at catching spam. But while we strived to reapprove mistakenly removed posts promptly, sometimes OP deleted their post before we could. Psychologically, it also made it dangerously easy to leave some content removed. As we mods burnt out over the years, our standards for what counted as a worthy post kept getting higher with fewer and fewer posts being approved. The end result has been a severe drop in discussion posts on the sub.
When recruiting new moderators, we sought people who thought as we did so mod decisions would be consistent and there wouldn’t be arguments in the mod chat. Modding is stressful enough without the stress coming from within the mod team. However, as you add more mods who agree with you, you can start to have an inflated view of how widespread your opinion is. A circlejerk mentality builds and outside opinion is increasingly easy to dismiss. This can leave users feeling like their opinions don’t matter to the mods and builds resentment.
Insanityy was a kind soul and hated conflict, she avoided disagreements as much as possible. As a friend, this was fine, but as a mod it meant she avoided openly discussing mod policy on the subreddit as inevitably there would be some disagreement. This lack of discussion with the sub made it hard for users to object to the direction the sub took, allowing the mod team to grow out of touch with what the userbase wants.
Hopes for the Future
While I may have been quite critical of the current state of the subreddit, I think the community is a good one and there’s hope for improvement. A smaller, more motivated mod team would help, as well as scaling back some of the restrictions like the question and image-post ban. Let activity on the subreddit explode. Should low-quality content grow to become a problem, perhaps /r/visualnovels should split just as /r/gaming and /r/games have, or perhaps a split between Japanese and English VNs would help?
Not every idea will work out, but what’s important is to be trying new ideas and be responsive to change rather than clinging to an outdated format.
As I said at the start, please remember this isn’t an impartial view on the history of the sub and that this isn’t meant to downplay the hard work of the current mod team. Modding is exhausting, it’s a constant burden with little praise. Even if I consider them poor mods, it doesn’t make them bad people.
I know she won’t ever read this, nor will she care what I think, but I still believe insanityy was an inspirational mod and a wonderful friend. It’s incredibly hard to go it alone like she did when she first took over /r/visualnovels. She stood up for what she thought /r/visualnovels could be and put in so much effort, every day, rain or shine, she never shirked from her responsibilities. I miss her every day.

The race to be the leader of the Conservative Party
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the 2015 federal election campaign, then Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the argument that there was no greater friend to Israel than his Conservative government. It was a position sharply contested by the Justin Trudeau-led Liberals, who countered by arguing that there was no daylight between the Liberals and Conservatives when it comes to supporting the State of Israel.
In the end, the Trudeau Liberals won the election and formed the government. Harper resigned and the Conservative Party leadership was assumed by Andrew Scheer. But after a failed attempt to unseat Trudeau in the 2019 election, a campaign that many thought was his to lose, Scheer offered his resignation and now a number of candidates are vying for leadership of the Conservative Party.
The CJN contacted three of the leading candidates for the Tories’ top job to solicit their views on issues of concern to our readers. They are early favourite Peter MacKay, MP for Pictou-Antigonish-Guysborough, who’s held several senior posts in Harper’s cabinet: defence minister, foreign affairs minister and minister of justice and attorney general; Erin O’Toole, MP for Durham, former minister of veterans affairs and currently the Official Opposition critic for foreign affairs; and Marilyn Gladu, MP for Sarnia-Lambton and Official Opposition critic for health and chair of the Standing Committee on Status of Women. Earlier, Gladu served as the Official Opposition critic for science.
In a telephone interview with Gladu and in email correspondence with MacKay and O’Toole, all three expressed steadfast support for Israel.
As O’Toole said, “Under Stephen Harper, Canada stood out as a resolute friend of Israel. Sadly, under Justin Trudeau this strong support has weakened. We need a principled Conservative leader who will make Canada a true friend of Israel once again.”
MacKay said that, “As the co-founder of the Conservative Party of Canada with Stephen Harper, I am proud of the strong relationship we built with Jewish communities across Canada and abroad. I am also proud of the unyielding support our Conservative government showed Israel directly at the UN, and internationally, and the deep friendship that we share with Israel. I will build on Stephen Harper’s legacy and continue to support Israel in Canada, at the United Nations and around the world.”
Gladu, referencing a passage in the Bible, said that those who bless Israel are blessed, while those who curse Israel are cursed.
“We should stand with Israel to pursue a peaceful two-state solution,” she said.
On the question of Jerusalem and Canada’s embassy in Israel, MacKay, Gladu and O’Toole signalled a shift from traditional Canadian policy, going further even than the Harper administration. All three said they would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the Canadian embassy there, steps already taken by the Trump Administration south of the border.
MacKay underscored this point by saying, “Jerusalem is the undisputed capital of the State of Israel and that is where Canada’s embassy should be and under my leadership, will be located. Canada’s Jewish community knows that the Conservative Party stands shoulder to shoulder with them. When I was defence minister, I made it clear that a threat to Israel is a threat to Canada and I will always stand with one of Canada’s closest allies.”
O’toole said, “I have been absolutely clear about this and my views have not changed. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. The strong presence of the Jewish people there is thousands of years old. The modern presence is even stronger – the Knesset, Supreme Court, the Foreign Ministry and most other government ministries are in West Jerusalem. I believe that we need more of a presence on the ground in Jerusalem. It’s crazy that our ambassador has to drive from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem to meet with government officials just to preserve a diplomatic fiction. It’s time to recognize reality and move our Embassy.”
Gladu said, “Jerusalem is the capital and we should move our embassy there.” She added that such a move would not be an impediment to peace.
On the question of Canada’s continued funding of UNRWA, the UN Relief and Works Agency, whose mandate is to help Palestinian refugees, but which has been accused of siding with Hamas, employing anti-Israel school curricula and even allowing weapons to be stored in their facilities, Gladu said, “I would definitely defund UNRWA. It funds terrorism and anti-Semitic education. This is not an organization that represents Canadian values and I would defund it.”
She also said that there is no transparency as to how funds sent from Canada are being spent, suggesting they could be going to support Hamas and promote anti-Semitic education.
MacKay, referencing the Harper government, said, “The United Nations and their various programs have a questionable history of anti-Israel positions and policies. When I was in government, we removed funding for UNRWA due to its ties to Hamas, which the Liberals then restored in 2016. If the UN does not work towards treating Israel fairly in the short term, Canada will stand shoulder to shoulder with Israel and reconsider funding and support of causes like UNRWA.”
O’Toole shared similar sentiments saying, “I will end funding for UNRWA unless it is significantly reformed. It cannot under any circumstances provide support to terror organizations or their affiliates. It also cannot create dependencies, which serve as a deterrent to lasting peace and deter resettlement efforts in other parts of the World. Canada will not continue funding if these reforms are not underway by the midway point of our first term.”
As to sanctioning Iran, which has called for the destruction of Israel, O’Toole said, “We need to hold the Iranian regime accountable to its human rights obligations by levying Magnitsky sanctions (restrictive measures against foreign nationals responsible for gross violations of human rights), confront its policy of state-sponsored terror by listing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity and work with allies to counter its instability abroad, and work with international partners to end its nuclear weapons program. We must show leadership to ensure that the Iranian regime does not succeed with its deception of the West.”
Gladu likewise favoured sanctions on Iran, saying the country is known to fund terrorism and “they are clear they want to annihilate Israel.”
She also referenced Iran’s Jan. 8 shooting down of a civilian passenger plane, soon after taking off from Tehran, “full of Canadians, which demonstrates it hasn’t changed.”
MacKay agreed that Canada should employ the Magnitsky Act “against human rights abusers and corrupt officials from the Iranian regime. We should also identify and investigate individuals and organizations lobbying, even unofficially, for the Iranian regime in Canada … We should also immediately list all branches of the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) as a terrorist organization.
Turning to anti-Semitism in Canada, MacKay said, “Hate crimes and attacks against any community or Canadian is abhorrent and shocking for a peaceful country like Canada, yet the reality is that Jewish Canadians are increasingly threatened and targeted. The fact that schools and places of worship require security is fa blight on our society. The federal government must do whatever it takes to stop hate crimes. As minister of justice, I brought in stiffer penalties for dangerous offenders. Dealing with hate crimes is a priority that I plan on addressing as prime minister.”
“The federal government has a responsibility to show leadership to fight hate crimes,” O’Toole said, “We need a prime minister who will stand strong against anti-Semitism in Canada including on university campuses and vocally oppose efforts to isolate Israel, particularly as calls to isolate Israel are often thinly-veiled anti-Semitism.”
Gladu said that education and tolerance for religious freedoms must be reinforced in Canada.
She said Canadian legislation is too vague when it comes to defining anti-Semitic behaviour and she would consider amending Canadian law to include the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) definition.
In addition, for immigrants from countries with high levels of anti-Semitism, “it must be clear that this is illegal in Canada.”
She noted that recent refugee arrivals to Canada came from countries where “anti-Semitism has prevailed” or where beating wives and girls was “common.”
Anti-Semitism is totally not in alignment with Canadian values. We need to take action to keep our Jewish community safe and stand with our ally, Israel,” Gladu said.
Gladu said she would favour increased funding to vulnerable communities for security purposes.
“People are afraid and there needs to be funding for churches, temples, mosques and schools,” she said.
O’Toole agreed that the federal security assistance program for at risk communities be expanded.
“The government needs to do its part supporting at risk communities. I support expanding the program to help support the costs of hiring security staff,” he said.
MacKay said, “We need to work with all levels of government and law enforcement agencies to ensure communities that are at risk are supported and safe. Nobody should have to live in fear when they go to a religious service, open their business or attend events in their community and we should look at strengthening any program to achieve that, which might include support for additional security provisions, security cameras and other safety measures as compensation for at risk communities.”
MacKay went on to say he is “proud of the unyielding support our Conservative government showed Israel directly at the UN, and internationally, and the deep friendship that we share with Israel. I will build on Stephen Harper’s legacy and continue to support Israel in Canada, at the United Nations, and around the world.”
“I believe that Canada should strengthen ties to Israel,” O’Toole said. “One small but meaningful measure that I would take is to develop an exchange program between the Canadian Armed Forces and Israel Defense Forces to allow for a deeper relationship between our militaries.”

Note
y'all are the ones acting like parse is a main character instead of an occasional antagonist, jesus. let the woman draw her characters.
OMG my first anon hate (?). I thought for sure the day won’t come but NO. I am stoked. STOKED
Thus, I’m nothing if not bound to make this post extra long for you, my dear anon hater, because u my numero uno!
First off, no one claimed Parse was the main character, and the author has made it explicitly clear.
But what you’re implying in this statement is that fans are not allowed to care about development of side characters? Which is extremely problematic to me for several reasons:
1. Fans are actually allowed to make value judgments about a particular body of work. Interpretations of the comic isn’t left to the author alone.
Say, if the author says, oh this is my main character, you should be focused only on this, does this negate the fact that some other characters were written and are available for the readers to read and interpret? Surely Ngozi isn’t the first author to experience backlash from fans clamoring for more about a particular character they hadn’t intended to be big/discussed in the first place? To the uninitiated, it has in fact happened, and it’s what they call a breakout character, my dear anon.
What’s that you say, fandom had actually, repeatedly voiced their opinion in choosing which character they like, even though such character hadn’t intended to be the main character? Why yes, yes it had. I believe this leads back to the principle of modern/postmodern literary criticism, in that the work is believed larger than the author. To simplify Roland Barthes, the death of the author is the birth of the reader, and the work is open to interpretation regardless of the author’s express intent to guide such interpretation. I’m allowed to critique this work because it simply is available for me to read and critique. My interpretation isn’t less valid than that of the author, and of course, I’m allowed to care about whichever character I like, inasmuch as in this case, it is my critique of how Kent was underutilized in this body of work. I am allowed to do that.
2. So now, regarding Parse being the occasional villain, gather round y'all new Check Please fans and let me tell ya: there was a period of time in between the Check Please updates where the introduction of Parse brought outrage. Outrage of the angry tears variety. But it was also the time Parse could have been so much more than your “occasional villain.” After all, at that point, Bitty’s story didn’t have to be intertwined with Jack’s– he could have a story much much larger coming-of-age story than that; but Jack’s story will always be intertwined with Kent and vice versa.
Around the time Kent was introduced, he was immediately a threat to the burgeoning love story of the “protagonists,” but more importantly than that , his introduction brought question to where the series was heading. Obviously from the very beginning, we had the boy-meets-boy, boy-annoys-boy-and-then-they-fall for each other cliche rolled out for Bitty’s future. But then Kent came along, and see, at this point in time, Bitty, the “protagonist” (and let me get back to the dubious quotation marks later) still hasn’t had his story set as a future pie-baking WAG sidekick of a coming out story of a professional athlete. Jack could have been just a pitstop to his larger bildungsroman arc, and Jack could have had fixing it up with Kent and his still unresolved issues about his insecurity and anxiety, as his own arc. Or so I hoped. Those were some exciting new times, my friends, because the possibilities! Jack and Bitty could have ended up together after Bitty resolves what he wants in life and Jack could have resolved his personal vendetta first! Or Kent could have been someone Jack needs a heart-to-heart talk to, and maybe Jack could be Bitty’s first love but not his last! Not that these things could have ever happened, because after the “talk” happened in the previous update wherein Jack dismissed Kent as unimportant, it’s all pretty much the same boring coming-out cliche with Kent eventually being treated as the Horrible Successful But Obsessed Ex who should forever pine while cuddling his many accolades and plotting Jack’s career’s demise, and Jack’s issues were pretty much handwaved and cured so.
But why should I care about Kent then, and how he’s treated by this comic? Because it’s supposedly an LGBT story and a story which supposedly cares about coming out in professional sports, but it only has two (2)  queer professional athletes as characters, and it treats one (1) out of two (2) horribly, horribly wrong. Lest you forget, there has been no professional hockey player to come out as they were active in the NHL; the last openly gay pro player to come out had been stabbed to death jesus fuck. Here are some of articles about sexism and  homophobia in hockey, and even though You Can Play has done good work and many a player had said they would support an LGBT teammate, not one has come out. Nada. Not even in retirement. This sexist, homophobic locker room culture stems as far back as juniors, and maybe even further than that. This is the culture that would have been engendered in Jack and this is the culture that Kent Parson would have been playing in at, nonstop. In all likelihood, if there was an LGBT hockey player in the league, and statistics would point to YES, then someone has done all their hockey education perfectly until they got drafted, maybe through Juniors, as Kent did, and someone would have been choosing to hide like Kent does, which they don’t make lightly. Kent Parson’s story is closest to an LGBT pro hockey athlete that you can get, and this comic punished him by falling in love with someone who buddyfucked him and refused to talk to him after he got drafted above him. He was made an “occasional (love story) villain” in the last update, and so the closeted athlete was vilified, whose story was marked as irrelevant.
My dear anon, as a member of the LGBT community, and a closeted one at that, allow me to be salty over this.
And why do I care about how cliched this love story is? It’s because it’s condescending to me and to closeted people who should not be made as bad examples because they have little to no wiggle room to express their sexuality. This isn’t an LGBT story, but as a friend of mine said, (lol yeah), a story that a straight person thinks what it’s like to be gay. It’s straight-up patronizing and does not make a positive difference to people who really are in our situation. Instead it endorses more stereotypes to the  narrative that choosing not to broadcast one’s sexuality is a lesser way to live.
And sure, Ngozi or any author is allowed to write what they want to write, there’s no contesting that. But allow us to criticize what we don’t appreciate, allow us to be offended where we are actually offended. We’re allowed this too.
3. As it is, the main character’s stories to me are uninteresting.
I can go on and write more on this, tbh, but basically, I find that spitting on a closeted character’s story arc is frankly insulting so that he can stand as a foil to the ~feel good~ coming-out romance that the author has concocted. Because that’s the only ideal way to live right, straight people?
In any case, rally on your pitchforks and torches, but I don’t find Bitty compelling. Yeah I went there.
One of the first things people learn for, like, writing 101, was to give your protagonist a concrete, specific goal at the beginning of your story, as this is the thing that develops the plot and the standard upon which the character is evaluated at the end of their arc: do they achieve their goal? if yes or no, how are they changed because of it? Story structure varies whether the story is genre-specific or under literary fiction, but it’s universally acknowledged that protagonists have to be compelling, even though they’re not likeable. And Bitty as a POV character and a protagonist? Has baking pies for sure, but to quote Community Season 3, you are not allowed to have ‘baking things’ as your identity. He had one, for sure, when he was just trying to stay at the team, but I don’t see much there now, except to achieve their #GayGoals of coming out as the Jack’s beau in his gay success story (and maybe declaring a major). But then again I don’t really find that fascinating.
But again, that’s just my opinion. We’re allowed to, yeah?
