Cywhirlgate? If you pleas? 🥺 I think you said you have a ship with whirl x you oc but its fine 🥹 I mean, if you want it could be cywhirlgate + oc (idk the ocs name so idk how itd fit it into the already packed ship name lol) I also don't know if your oc is the jealous type so maybe that would be a bad idea, not exactly trying to make a drama 😭
Tumblr media
This how they be cuddling ong. Also my first time drawing Cyclonus chat!!
Excuse the less crazy shading than usual on this one. It’s four characters and I still have a fever BAHBSH. But I couldn’t resist doing this one. Like 1. Has my favourite character, 2. It has my OC?!?! And 3. Has one of my favourite ships ARGHHH. Going crazy. LOVE. Thanks chat for this opportunity.
I would usually draw Nightmare with Whirl rather than Nightrunner, but Nightrunner just fit better in this scenario ngl. They silly lil goobsters. Don’t worry though chat, Nightrunner is not the jealous type. Maybe possessive, but not jealous. He IS the type to ask for a plus one in the relationship EUHUEH.

imagine that you are a young boy and you always feel a creeping sense that there is something wrong with you and then you find out you have magic and will live forever and it all makes so much more sense. and you go to study at a house of mages and the teacher you land is so kind and smart and brave and a figure of legend but he had an apprentice before you who he had to let go of. and you try so hard. you love your studies and you grieve about your immortality but you try so hard to learn everything and use your talent and get everything right and do everything your teacher says. and still he will never love you or trust you the way he cares for his old apprentice and his old apprentice comes by all the time and your teacher is always so, so much happier to see him than you and the old apprentice laughs at you and argues with you and your teacher doesn’t care. but you still get along with them as best you can and care for them and do everything right and you try and you try. and you don’t love easily and you’ve never felt attracted to anyone before and then the most beautiful woman you’ve ever known wants to study with you, wants to know your talents, wants to know your magic, wants to know you, wants you. and you have her and you love her and your teacher is finally happy with you and hopeful and the ex apprentice has a wonderful partner who calms him and sticks up for you and your teacher is trusting you and everything is finally going right for once. and then the man you love who taught you everything is dead and the woman you loved turns out to have been using your mind and body and turns her back on you and laughs at you and leaves you to die. and you don’t know what happened to your predecessor but you see his partner suffering and being tortured and wanting to die every day and you know it’s your fault, if you’d been steadier and more trustworthy and tried less to prove yourself and accepted the coldness of your previous life and been less ambitious and less blind and less desperate for someone to love and see and know you, maybe this wouldn’t have happened, and it’s your fault, and you hate yourself, and you can’t do anything to fix it, and you decide that at least if you give your life up for your friends they will understand you loved them and maybe forgive your selfish, hungry, desperate blindness. you are thero í procepios.

Queer Adult SFF Books Bracket: Round 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book summaries and submitted endorsements below:
Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah
Two top women gladiators fight for their freedom within a depraved private prison system not so far-removed from America's own.
Loretta Thurwar and Hamara "Hurricane Staxxx" Stacker are the stars of Chain-Gang All-Stars, the cornerstone of CAPE, or Criminal Action Penal Entertainment, a highly-popular, highly-controversial, profit-raising program in America's increasingly dominant private prison industry. It's the return of the gladiators and prisoners are competing for the ultimate prize: their freedom.
In CAPE, prisoners travel as Links in Chain-Gangs, competing in death-matches for packed arenas with righteous protestors at the gates. Thurwar and Staxxx, both teammates and lovers, are the fan favorites. And if all goes well, Thurwar will be free in just a few matches, a fact she carries as heavily as her lethal hammer. As she prepares to leave her fellow Links, she considers how she might help preserve their humanity, in defiance of these so-called games, but CAPE's corporate owners will stop at nothing to protect their status quo and the obstacles they lay in Thurwar's path have devastating consequences.
Moving from the Links in the field to the protestors to the CAPE employees and beyond, Chain-Gang All-Stars is a kaleidoscopic, excoriating look at the American prison system's unholy alliance of systemic racism, unchecked capitalism, and mass incarceration, and a clear-eyed reckoning with what freedom in this country really means.

The Nightrunner series (Luck in the Shadows, Stalking Darkness, Traitor's Moon, Shadows Return, The White Road, Casket of Souls, Shards of Time) by Lynn Flewelling
Endorsement from submitter: "First genre books I read with queers! Written in the early 90s, so has era typical language. I would say this book has romance in it, but is primarily a political intrigue fantasy. I say this is a positive!!! I don't mind a romantasy, but I tend to find them focusing more on the romance than the fantasy, this has both without one getting lost in the background details! Alec and Seregil will steal your hearts and probably any juicy gossip you have lying around!"
When young Alec of Kerry is taken prisoner for a crime he didn’t commit, he is certain that his life is at an end. But one thing he never expected was his cellmate. Spy, rogue, thief, and noble, Seregil of Rhiminee is many things–none of them predictable. And when he offers to take on Alec as his apprentice, things may never be the same for either of them. Soon Alec is traveling roads he never knew existed, toward a war he never suspected was brewing. Before long he and Seregil are embroiled in a sinister plot that runs deeper than either can imagine, and that may cost them far more than their lives if they fail. But fortune is as unpredictable as Alec’s new mentor, and this time there just might be… Luck in the Shadows.
Fantasy, epic fantasy, adventure, political intrigue, series, adult

Haiiii shadowwww!! I'm struggling with art block so bad right now gahhhh D:
Looking at your art always inspires me! (or when the art block doesn't let me draw I go "omg cool art!!! CRUNCH")
(btw that little whirly bird doodle that got popular totally deserves it! It's so atheistically pleasing and cute!!)
I guess I just wanna make a request for you to draw more nightrunner! any version, I'm not biased (well, the G1 version is my favorite hehe, but I am a sucker) but I don't have a prompt or anything either </3
I guess if i had to think of something, maybe nightrunner chillin? Like super relaxed, laid back on something hehe, I know some versions of them need it (/silly, non-serious connotation)
-fanart anon :3
Tumblr media
Accidentally got a bit carried away w this one.. I swear I started drawing at like 15:30 something and now it’s 18:30 idk how that happened HUHAUHE I am STARVIN.
ANYWAY HIII FANART ANON!! X3 I fucking HATE artblock and I am currently out in battle with my father’s sword fighting it for you because it is a curse that nobody deserves to have upon them.
And yeah I know some versions of him definitely need a break so I’m giving a break to the guy who probably needs a break the least AHGSHA. But, it is because, tbh anon, it has been a while since I last drew g1 Nightrunner. I also totally forgot to work on the other gen versions of him lmfao?? Lmk if I should do that, making an animated version would be fun probably.
(And thanks for complimenting the Whirl doodle I did. I still choose to believe it is because Whirl enjoyers like myself are horribly deprived.)

Queer book recs from IFM's editors
Mantha's Rec(s)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner Series and Tamír Triad
Any chance Mantha gets they recommend Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner Series and Tamír Triad. Both set in the same world but in two different eras, these fantasy series have become so dear to them over the years.
The Nightrunner books are part fantasy, part political intrigue, part murder mystery, all while exploring themes of belonging and identity. And while they don't have genders outside the binary, the two main characters are bi, cis men (with a little gender-nonconformity in there, too.)
The Tamír Triad tells the coming of age story of a trans girl at court in the midst of political upheaval: think Knights of the Round Table but King Arthur is trans.
Flewelling's writing is impeccable. She has a gift for character, detail, and setting that creates immersive worlds. Though not recent publications - the first book came out in 1996 - they were the first books Mantha read that showed them that the sky was truly the limit in fantasy writing.

All the White Spaces by Ally Wilkes
Not for the faint of heart, All the White Spaces by Ally Wilkes is a historical thriller in which a trans man stows away on an expedition ship bound for the Antarctic from England.
Set just after WWII, the stakes are quickly raised when the ship - the only way the expedition is getting home - is destroyed just shy of their destination. Missing most of the crew and nearly all their supplies, the few remaining members of the expedition must find a way to survive the winter in Antarctica.
Stumbling across a German expedition's camp seems like a stroke of good luck - but where did the Germans go (and would they even believe the war was over?), and what lurks in the darkness just outside of the lamp light?
Sione's Rec
Tumblr media
Life Ceremony by Sayaka Murata
If you're a short story reader who loves weird, slightly dark speculative fiction (think George Saunders, Miranda July, Alexander Weinstein, Carmen Maria Machado), Sione highly recommends Sayaka Murata's book of short stories, Life Ceremony, which came out in paperback in May.
While the stories don't contain genders outside the binary, there is gay rep, asexual and aromantic spectrum rep, and neurodiversity rep.
But what really gets zir excied about this book are the themes! This is basically an entire short story collection about what's normal, who decides, and how changeable our social norms and taboos are, which opens a window into a future with many queer and neurodivergent possibilities. Ze hasn't been this excited about a new book in a very long time.
