okay heres thing thing: I feel like I could get more behind this retcon if it wasn't specifically tied to Haly's circus. If it was just that the court of owls knew that the circus was coming to Gotham and had their eye on Dick because he was a prodigious athlete rather than Haly's knowing about it and specifically presenting a child. I feel like that ties Haly's to Gotham way more than is necessary and makes it way too nefarious.
Also the tooth thing is very dumb. I'm not a dentist but I feel like in all the scans and tests they've done over the years they would have noticed weird engravings in his tooth. Also the thing with the hideouts in between floors someone would have accidently stumbled into one eventually.

short little snippet based on this by @frownyalfred !! i really enjoy this concept and when i saw it i knew i had to write as soon as possible
It’s instinct.
The way his body twists mid-air, tracking the trajectory of a threat with effortless precision. The way his head tilts just slightly, not a moment wasted, eyes sharp and calculating. It’s a routine ingrained into muscle and bone, a dance performed thousands of times before, whether in the limelight of a trapeze act or the shadows of Gotham’s rooftops.
It’s almost laughable, really—how many people have decided, consciously or not, that Nightwing is the one to toss around.
Friends, foes, and everyone in between. Donna had done it once years ago, her laughter echoing as he landed with a huff of mock indignation. Wally has made a game of it, testing just how far he could push him with a sudden shove or a gust of super-speed mischief. But then there are the others. The ones who’ve done it out of malice. The ones who’ve thrown him to hurt him, to break him. The ones who miscalculated how much he could take.
They’ve all underestimated him.
Landing, after all, isn’t just a skill to Dick Grayson. It’s survival.
The Flying Graysons taught him the poetry of motion—the arc of a leap, the perfect timing of a catch. Bruce taught him to weaponize it, to make falling a strategy, a trap for those arrogant enough to think they had the upper hand. But this? This isn’t quite either. It’s not purely circus artistry, nor is it wholly bat-trained pragmatism.
It’s something uniquely his own.
His landings aren’t just recoveries; they’re statements. A fluid roll into a springing kick. A sudden crouch into a leap that takes an opponent off-guard. Even the quietest touch-down is deliberate, a reminder that he’s always in control, even when the ground is rushing up to meet him.
And yet, it’s more than control. There’s defiance in it. A refusal to let anyone dictate where or how he falls—or if he falls at all.
So they can throw him. Laugh at him. Underestimate him.
He’ll keep twisting through the air, keep watching, calculating, landing on his terms. Every toss, every stumble, every fight—it's all just more practice. Another step in perfecting something that is, and always will be, purely Nightwing.

Batman and Scooby Doo! Mysteries #1 by Sholly Fisch
Tumblr media
5/5
This post is for fan entertainment, I am not being paid.
Hi everyone,
I want to try something different, granted I normally like to wait to see if they come out with omnibus of a comic series, because I run into the problem where I am missing an issue (this series I am missing #2). So, I will cover the ones I do have and hopefully I can get my hands on issues #2.
Now I will go over the majority of the story, but I won’t unmask who the culprit is, I am against spoiling any mysteries.
Now I grew up watching Scooby Doo and Batman, and when I watch that one series where they teamed up to take on Joker and Penguin, I thought that was the coolest episode of Scooby Doo (till I watched the one episode where Scooby Doo meets the Addams Family).
Now we have comics that are just as cool as the old episode.
This first issues centers around the famous Haly’s Circus and it starts out with a flash back to Richard “Dick” Grayson time at the circus leading up to parent unfortunate murders. The Mystery Inc. gang are in attendance enjoying the show and food that the circus has to offer.
They witness the new acrobat in action Zoltan (not Zoltar, I kid you not I had to re-read that panel of the comic) where he was scared by this issue villain Deadman! When Zoltan missed his dismount, he falls but is saved by none other than Nightwing.
After Deadman causes a panic, the audience runs wild to get away from the villain.
Already the Mystery Inc. gang is ready to get to work.
Velma already has found a clue on one of the sandbags, a chalk handprint (How can a ghost leave a handprint.)
The gang meets the ringmaster Haly, the fortune teller Vashnu, the strong man Sando & and another person of the circus Esmeralda.
Vashnu tells the gang about Deadman, once he was named Boston Brand and he was one of the best acrobats in the world. However much like the Flying Grayson’s, Boston died by a criminal. Then the whole ghost thing of haunting the circus.
Zoltan demands to know why Deadman is going after him, that if it weren’t for Nightwing he could have been hurt. Also, Zoltan asks where his partner is Adolfo. Which right on cue he comes out and explains he was knocked out.
Daphne asks the normal questions, has anyone either criminals or developers approach Ringmaster to buy him out. Cue the Dingaling Brothers, they run a rival circus that wants the Haly’s circus.
Nightwing accuses the brothers that this could be their plans, which of course they deny this.
Ringmaster wants to proceed with the show, but Esmeralda is against it. She doesn’t want Zoltan her fiancé is in danger. At this moment Adolfo pipes up he can perform Zoltan act, but Nightwing agrees with Esmerald, which is why Nightwing offers to do the act with Adolfo, which Adolfo is against saying he needs training for that.
However, Ringmaster loves the idea of having a famous superhero in one of his acts.
The Mystery Inc. gang also joins in as well. Daphne said for an old case she has taken some trapeze lessons so she can also help Nightwing.
This is where I’ll leave the issue, but I will say this that Velma is standing in for the Ringmaster introducing the acts. Fred is an escape artist (He makes traps, so this should be perfect for him), and poor Shaggy and Scooby are with the clowns.
However, when the culprit is unmasking and everything is out in the open, I thought the ending was very sweet. We also have a double unmasking in this issue
My thoughts on this issue, I loved it. It was a Nightwing focus issues with no mention of Batman for almost the whole issue. I know in other comics Nightwing has worked hard to be his own hero. This issue was perfect in my opinion, having Nightwing coming home to the circus and helping his old home out.

The answer to the Nightwing reading order depends a lot on how far back you want to go, and how many reboots you can stomach. If you don't want to go back too far, I'd start with New 52. Despite the ugly red suit. 🙃
Traps and Trapezes
Night of the Owls
Death of the Family
Second City
Setting Son
Then we have a fun little side mission for Dick, where he's a spy. I enjoyed this run, even if it was kind of weird. But then aren't all comics at times?
Agents of Spyral
We all Die at Dawn
Nemesis
A Ghost in the Tomb
Spyral's End
These are the stand alone TPs. Purely Nightwing. But if you're into him working with a team then I will give you those recs too. I think the Rebirth/Dawn of DC trades will need to be in another ask? I have no idea on the word limit.
Hey! I never said thank you @bizarrokal for all this. I should have but I got distracted. Baseball playoffs happened, which is a bad excuse. I apologize for the delay in acknowledgement. You made a wonderful list and I really appreciate it.
I ordered Leaping Into The Light today, based on a page I saw online. I'm excited to read it. I'll try and post about it. And I'm keeping your list to refer back to for more if I like what I read.
Thank you again.

Wonder Mother Shift
Nightwing: *kicking 3 villains in one jump*
Nightwing: *triple somersault*
Nightwing: *yeeting escrima sticks like crazy*
Wonder Woman: Isn't he just the most skilful trapeze artist to be born?
Bad guy *nodding*: Egh...UghAgh-
Nightwing: Come on! Not in front of the bad guys!
Wonder Woman: Why not? Isn't it what all Bat-warriors want to achieve? Respect and fear from one's enemy?
Nightwing: Well- yeah? Maybe? But it's just- *turning on extinguishers*
Wonder Woman *looking over*: Tell me, villain. Am I not in the right here?
Bad guy *struggling for breath*: ...eghugh!
Nightwing: It's just that these guys have just robbed a sandwich shop?
Wonder Woman: So?
Nightwing: They're not like even... Tiered? *hitting a guy from behind without even looking*
Wonder Woman: I still cannot see your reasoning.
Nightwing: I really don't need an approval of somebody whose biggest life turning point was attempted arson at Batway.
Wonder Woman:
Nightwing:
Bad guy *trapped under Wonder Woman's firm arm grip*:
Nightwing:
Wonder Woman:
Bad guy *passing out*:
Nightwing: Nevermind. I'll explain it later.

Nightwing number 13 please 😊
(I just got a spurt of inspiration so apologies bc this is a long one!)
13. their happiest memory
Pre Invasion, Team Year One (?), Dick's first birthday celebrating with the Team post them knowing his secret identity. After a grueling mission, he insisted that he didn't want to do anything big and made them promise it would be kept simple. No birthday feast (looking at M'gann), no birthday throne on the outside of Mt. Justice (looking at Conner), and no getting Batman involved (looking at Zatanna). Upon Wally's insistence, he consents to a quiet get together.
Granted, they have other ideas of what a quiet get-together means.
At promptly 12:49pm, the exact time of his birth, Dick is promptly awoken mid-slumber and kidnapped. M'gann clouds his mind so he has no idea where they're taking him, and the knots Artemis tied his wrists with are beyond even his skill level. She gleefully says she's been practicing. Dick attempts to cut himself out, but Kaldur calmaly asks him to stop, as his wrists are bound with fortified seaweed from Poisedonis that have been enchanted with underwater sorcery. Bottom line: he's trapped.
When Dick's mental haze finally clears and his wrists have been freed he finds that the Team has brought him to... a circus? M'gann, Artemis and Conner explain that they were thinking back the Haly mission, and how Wally never shuts up about how he missed out, so they thought it would be fun if they all signed up for trapeze lessons together. It's a chance for Dick to show off like the star he is and get a laugh out of all of them failing.
And, admittedly, it's the most fun he's had in a very long time. Conner, who has no problem with heights, and is more invincible than anyone on the team, is absolutely terrified of letting go of the trapeze. Wally lets go on purpose just to bounce on the giant safety net, ruining the jump for everyone. Zatanna and Artemis are surprisingly adept at it. Kaldur and Raquel have been oddly formal with each other since their breakup, but Raquel accidentally falls on him after failing to grab onto the trapeze and it breaks the ice and they laugh for the first time together since they split. Bruce comes towards the end with Alfred and a cake and Dick shoots Zatanna a look but she says she promised not to get Batman involved, Bruce Wayne is totally different. And the whole day is filled with loads of laughs and bruises and it's really one of the best birthdays Dick has ever had.

The original Boy tech wonder
Friendly reminder that Dick Grayson is proficient with technology and doesn't have to rely on younger siblings or anyone else for everything. (He might have moments when he prefers the old-fashioned style – but then, I don't blame him – I still have a landline too.) It's not that he's Cyborg, who can interface directly with computers, but he's certainly not helpless.
Now, Dick as a character is older than the programmable electronic computer, so there's no wonder that early books, where he is Robin, doesn't involve hacking into supercomputers or suchlike. However, he's always been written as good in school (besides, Batman would ground him if he didn't keep up...) and handy with all kinds of technology.

Dick knew his chemistry in Robin studies his lessons. Batman vol 1 # 18. Writer Joseph Samachson, art Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. (1943)

While in space with Superman and several other heroes, he used his knowledge of Tamaranean to hack an alien data terminal. Action Comics # 842. Writers Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza, art Pete Woods. (2006)

Cracks a code and thinks of a way to foil radio controlled bombers. The disappearing batplanes. Star-Spangled Comics # 105. Art Jim Mooney. (1950)

Once, he saved a shipful of criminals (and himself) by extending the time field of Clock King's high-tech alien weapon. Nightwing vol 4 # 25. Writer Tim Seeley, art Minkyu Jung. (2017)

Here's Nightwing figuring out how to clone a human. Titans vol 1 # 17. Writer Devin Grayson, art Adam DeKraker and Andy Lanning. (2000)

While he was at college, he spent time tutoring a kid in, for instance, math, besides studying and being active as Robin. Teen-age trap. Batman # 244. Writer Elliot S Maggin, art Irv Novick and Dick Giordano. (1972)

This is an easy one, obviously... Hooking up two top-secret computers. New Titans # 55. Writers Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, art George Pérez and Romeo Tanghal. (1989)

He custom-made his car when he first moved to Blüdhaven. Nightwing vol 2 # 16. Writer Chuck Dixon, art Scott McDaniel and Karl Story. (1998)

He has hacked the override to the Justice League teleporter (which Tim later hacked from him). Nightwing vol 2 # 138. Writer Fabian Nicieza, art Don Kramer and Wayne Faucher. (2008.)

In Clocks of Doom, Dick thinks of a way to survive a bomb-blast. Star-Spangled Comics # 70. Art Win Mortimer. (1947)

He built these cool flying wings. Nightwing Vol 2 # 144. Writer Peter Tomasi, art Don Kramer, Rags Morales and more. (2008)

And of course, he makes a lot of his own equipment. Here he has modified his escrima batons with circus physics in mind (while still enjoying an old-fashioned landline at home). Nightwing vol 4 # 44. Writer Benjamin Percy, art Chris Mooneyham. (2018)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As far as I'm concerned, DC's Future State titles are stories from possible alternate futures (that will never come in main continuity because that would restrict writers too much). But it was still nice to see that Dick has been tinkering with different inventions in Future State: Nightwing # 2. Writer Andrew Constant, art Nicola Scott. (2021)
Tumblr media
Evidently, Dick also thought in trapeze terms when he continued to develop the grapple line from his batons in the upcoming Nightwing vol 4 # 78. Writer Tom Taylor, art Bruno Redondo. (2021)

Dick Grayson had charisma pouring out of his skin and a smile that could melt the coldest hearts and an air of buoyancy lighter than a balloon that he presented to the world, to his family, to himself, that he often forgets. It was the little things that remind him.
Like the way he had bruises peppering every part of his body. One would think that he gets them all from the mask, from running around the Haven and Gotham with a skintight suit and two sparky sticks. But Dick’s good, he’s real good, he generally flips out of the way of most punches, and if he does get hit, you know it’s a real serious one. For another thing, the bruises are in odd places. His family sees him wince in pain and expect to see a discoloured mark on his forearm he used to block a hit. Or they see him flinch when he sits down and expect a bruise blossoming on his gut. But instead, purple bursts into color and spreads under the skin of his shins, along an arc on his back, behind his neck. Because these bruises are from practice, from repeatedly landing on his shins on the lyra, arching back on the hoop on his back, and hanging from his neck. The lyra is a beautiful instrument, but the metal is harsh and unforgiving. There are raw red marks on his ankles from the foot locks and holds he practices on the silk. And it’s almost every other day a callous on his hand splits from the trapeze.
Like the way his toes naturally gravitate towards a point. It had been drilled into his head while he was still with Haly’s circus, while he was still under his parents’ protective arch, while he could still turn the performance mindset off. Pointed toes make for strong feet, long lines, and turns your body into a work of art. It was a mantra that rang in his head, one that he lived by vigilantly if he ever wanted to become as graceful and beautiful as his parents. Later on, the mantra changed, though it still rang in his head daily. Pointed toes make for stronger backflips-into-kicks, pointed toes help you vault over a criminal’s head, pointed toes give you the momentum you need to escape Riddler’s traps, Ivy’s snares, Joker’s plots. It’s become a second nature to him. Whether he’s barefoot and sitting on a barstool at the Manor’s breakfast bar, whether he’s wearing his high quality leather dress shoes at a charity event, whether he’s wearing his tactical boots with his Nightwing suit, his toes unconsciously twitch into that pointed position. Dick doesn’t even notice he’s doing it. Which is why he’s always surprised when he takes his shoes off at the end of the day and sits on his bed, pulling his socks off his feet to reveal chipped and broken fingernails, dried blood on his toes, broken blood vessels turning purple. He stares for a couple minutes, flexing his feet flat and wincing at the unfamiliar sensation, before moving to the bathroom to grab the first aid kit.
Like the way he visits an equipment store every two weeks like clockwork to buy some new wrist braces for work. His hands are almost constantly wrapped in tape, no matter what he’s doing at the time. When he’s working on the force, his colleagues shake their heads at how he always has a wrist injury, the wrist braces are a testament to that. Amy starts keeping an extra set in her desk. When he’s in relaxed civvies and hanging out with friends, fingerless gloves are strapped around his hands, the kind that provide extra joint support. It adds to his “cool guy” rep, and he doesn’t do much to disprove the theory. When he’s at the Manor, or Titans Tower, or relaxed with another masked friend, his wrists are taped up, secure and tight. Wrapping the tape around his hands has become second nature, and others are a little disbelieving and a little in awe at the innately graceful way he winds it through his fingers and around his wrist, a ribbon being manipulated at the hands of an expert. Once, when they were just starting out as Batman and Robin, when they had first reached a shaky truce of mutual respect, Damian had asked Dick why he always had some sort of wrist support on. Dick smiled ruefully, unwrapped his wrists, and held them out, the reddish-purple blossoming under the light. His fighting style takes a toll, Dick explains. He flings himself off buildings without a grappling hook and quadruple-somersaults into a hang and springs off a handstand into a right hook and balances himself on his hands as he contorts his body into impossible positions. All that damage is taken out on his wrists, and it’s something he’s grown used to.
Dick Grayson has called himself a Titan for years, different definitions but the same meaning overall. There’s a pedestal in the hero community, higher than even Superman can fly, and no one knows whether Dick was placed on it or if he climbed up there on his own accord, but he’s not coming down anytime soon. He moves with a grace unnatural enough to be captivating but beautiful enough to be comforting. His smirk is forever young, his eyes are light and free, his grip strong and supporting, his laugh warm as to light a sun inside everyone he meets.
It’s easy for people to forget that Dick Grayson is human, and it’s even easier for Dick himself to forget he’s human. It’s the little things that remind him.

Young Once - oneshot
Pairing/s: Chuck Taylor/Orange Cassidy
Word count: 2,827
Rating: T
Fandom: AEW
Story Description: Orange thinks Chuck deserves better, and tries to give it to him in the ring. But what Orange could really give Chuck is so much more.
Author Notes:
I'm pretty sure the Chorange Valentines day thing was past/present/future and I didn't participate in that, but this is based on that concept
Lyrics are The Smith Street Band
Past
"And we were young once
So was everyone
I guess something about it felt important
And we were happy once
So was everyone
I guess I never realized it was so important"
Orange sits on the couch with his legs crossed under himself, eyes fixed to the TV screen - though he couldn't have told you what he was watching. His thin fingers fidgeted in his lap with a thread coming off the seam of his jeans. He twisted it around one of his fingers, tight enough to cut off circulation, shoulders tensed.
When he was at home, he wasn't the lackadaisical, self-assured man that he was in the ring. The one with the confidence to play mind games with his opponents and take his shirt off in front of a crowd of people.
When he was here, Orange Cassidy melted away, perhaps trapped in his signature rayban sunglasses until the next time they were worn. Left behind was a single thirty-five year old man, still living in a shoebox apartment with his best friend, chasing a dream that never quite seemed to materialise.
"Things will get better, man," Chuck would always say, eyes bright like a puppy's.
Chuck meant it, too. That was the thing with him; he was so sincere. Orange had poked fun at it, once, in front of Chuck's other tag partner Trent.
"That's the thing about wrestlers," Trent has said philosophically (he was always philosophical when he was drinking), "if you talk to any of the ones who've made it, they'll tell you they never thought of doing anything else."
But Orange had thought of doing something else. A fact he wasn't sure many in the business knew. He'd gone to college, gotten his degree, and worked professionally in the field of architecture for years. Hell, he was still on a firm's payroll just in case this whole wrestling thing went south.
Chuck didn't have that safety net. Didn't need it. Orange thought of a circus acrobat, swinging high up on the trapeze. How at practice the amateur acrobats would swing with a net below them, but in a real performance the professional acrobats didn't have a net below them. The trapeze wouldn't have been a compelling if the audience had known there was no real danger to it.
Maybe Orange had been reading too many Nightwing comics of late, but to him Chuck's wrestling had always seemed more compelling than his own. Chuck's last civilian job was when he was 19; he'd been making wrestling work as a full-time job for nearly 15 years.
Orange could feel his roommate's eyes on him from the kitchenette behind the couch, but Orange didn't dare turn around. They'd been living together for long enough that Chuck could sense when Orange was in a mood. Orange could sense Chuck's mood too, and without turning around Orange could tell he had that determined look on his face. Eyes narrowed and dark, brow furrowed, lips firmly squeezed into a thin line.
When he'd come in the door a couple hours prior and seen Orange on the couch in the exact same position he was still sitting in now, he'd loudly declared that they were having a movie night and that Chuck was cooking dinner. (Which actually meant they would stare at the Netflix recommendations for 20 minutes while their food got cold and then inevitably just end up watching old WCW tapes on the Network instead.)
It seemed dinner was ready now, because Orange heard the light footfalls of Chuck's bare feet crossing the floorboards to the couch. He set down two plates - orange chicken, funny - and then picked up the remote before flopping onto the couch right beside Orange.
Often when Orange was feeling especially misanthropic he would wriggle away from Chuck's friendly embrace on the couch to sulk at the end of it, but tonight his hip was already bumping up against the armrest and Chuck had sat down right beside him.
Chuck casually flopped an arm over the back of the couch, fingertips brushing Orange's shoulder. It made something in Orange's chest loosen a little, which was annoying. Orange wanted to sulk, but over the years Chuck had become so damn good at cheering him up.
That was another thing about Chuck Taylor. When he wanted something, he got it. Brash and unafraid and risk-taking, Chuck was a general in and outside of the ring.
"Now," Chuck said dramatically, flourishing the remote in his hand until the tip of it was planted playfully on Orange's nose, "what are we watching? Netflix?"
You, Orange thought quietly, then scowled as he pushed that thought firmly out of his brain.
Chuck raised a quizzical eyebrow at Orange's sudden change in expression.
"Right," he said slowly. "WCW it is then."
In spite of himself, Orange smiled a little at that.
Present
"We all work our dream jobs
And I'm not lacking in ambition
I am a building of a person
That's scheduled for demolition"
It was 2022 and AEW's pandemic era had finally ended. Even better, Trent was finally back from his neck injury and the Best Friends faction was back on TV. Orange was sat watching Yuta run drills with Chuck in the ring. Yuta was past the point of needing them, really, but Orange figured he did it to make Chuck feel a little more useful.
Orange's chest felt tight at that thought. Three years ago, if you'd told Orange he would have been the one to main event on TV against Adam Cole in an unsanctioned match, he would have told you that would have been where Chuck would be. If you'd told Orange that Trent would be beating Nick Jackson in a New Japan-style singles match on cable TV on a Friday night, he would have told you I bet him and Chuck will be the next tag champs.
Chuck was the one with all the accolades. Sure, Orange had been IWTV champ, but Chuck had been an IWA Mid-South champion like CM-fucking-Punk. He'd been a PWG champion like nearly every indie darling and WWE champion of the last 10 years had been. Chuck was the one with the Ring of Honor and New Japan runs under his belt. Chuck was a wrestler. Orange was an architect with a hobby.
Of course architecture was no longer his job, Tony Khan's generous contract had given him the opportunity to leave his safety net behind. But surely TK's three year guarantee was just another form of safety net.
And now Orange was one of AEW's biggest hits. When they didn't know what to do to hype up a crowd, they'd send Orange. When they need to raise their revenue, they released new Orange Cassidy merch and it sold like hotcakes.
For a time, Orange had taken Chuck along with him; Chuck coming out alongside him, doing faction merch so that Chuck and the others would see a cut of the profits. But it seemed like the booking had taken other ideas now.
Orange watched Chuck run the ropes with Yuta, the way his body moved like someone who was born to be in the ring. Orange still remembered Chuck when he was young enough and green enough that the ropes would bruise his ribcage and he'd invite Orange to touch them on drunken nights where they slept in the car because the shows they were doing paid in exposure.
Orange still remembered Chuck quitting his job at nineteen because it hurt his wrestling schedule. Orange remembered not having the guts to quit his.
Chuck leapt over Yuta with ease, graceful as an acrobat; graceful as he had been in his 20s. And sure, maybe the young guys had caught up and out-classed his dropkick, but Chuck was a goddamn pioneer of indie wrestling of the last two decades.
Chuck, who had moved to Philly to chase his dreams. Chuck, who never flew with a safety net. Chuck, who had always dragged Orange along for the ride, who came up with half of Orange's gimmick, who never felt bitter about being relegated to the YouTube shows.
This last year it might have looked like Orange was taking Chuck along for the ride. But the truth is, Orange wouldn't have been a wrestler without Chuck - definitely not one on TV.
I don't deserve this, Orange thought to himself.
Just then, Chuck paused for a moment to pull up his wrestling tights by the belt. More guys from the back had come out to watch and warm up themselves, and no doubt Chuck felt their eyes on him. Guys 10 years younger getting twice as much screen time. Guys who could eat anything and maintain their figure.
The thing is, Orange liked the way Chuck looked now. A little softer around the edges, a little more to grab a hold of (and if Orange did grab a little during their hugs in the ring, no one had noticed yet). Chuck had greyed around the temples, but it reminded Orange of all the years they'd spent together, and of all the knowledge and skill Chuck had accumulated. A ring general should look like your daddy- dad.
But this year, Orange's contract would almost certainly get renewed, but Chuck's might not. And what then?
They'd already made the decision to move into separate apartments because they'd finally made enough money to do so. And every day where Orange didn't see Chuck felt like a month.
He'd thought this feud with the Super Kliq might have been their chance, which was why Orange had main evented with Cole. He wanted to see Chuck and Trent face the Bucks, for Kris to get another shot at Britt's title, for Yuta to get the rub. But it seemed like the roster had just become too bloated with talent - guys who'd grown up watching tapes, who'd learned everything they knew from guys like Chuck.
That bitter thought put a deep frown on his face.
It was then that he realised Chuck was no longer in the ring. He was knelt beside the apron, staring at Yuta go a couple rounds with one of the local guys who would be on Elevation next week. But Chuck wasn't watching Yuta, he was peering at Orange (who was seated in the stands) over his sunglasses.
When Orange caught his eye, Chuck stood up and started to make his way over.
Fifteen years of friendship and Chuck could damn near read Orange's mind.
Chuck sat down in the seat beside him, posture unusually stiff.
"I know," Chuck began to say.
Orange was already finishing Chuck's sentence in his head. I know you think we deserve a shot, but so do all those young guys down there. I know you feel guilty, but I'm so happy for you.
But that's not what Chuck said.
"I know I don't look as good as I used to, but I'm doing my best, man."
Years ago, Chuck had earned himself the moniker of "low-self", much like Colt Cabana, for how often he talked negatively about himself. But the last few years that had eased off, and it had been nearly ten years since he'd been that way with Orange. Between Chuck and Orange, they both knew exactly how good Chuck was.
It was rare for Orange to see his friend looking so vulnerable. It caught Orange off-guard, and it took him a long time to reply. Chuck was patient with him (as always) and buried his hands in his pockets as he waited for a response.
"You look perfect," Orange finally said simply.
It probably wasn't the response Chuck was looking for, but it was true.
Chuck didn't respond, so Orange chanced a glance in his direction. Chuck was just staring at him, his face open.
"You make it look as easy as breathing," Orange said quietly, voice going soft.
Chuck didn't say anything, but he reached out his hand so that it brushed Orange's left thigh, skin on denim. Orange slid his hand up from his knee and placed it on his leg where his fingers could just touch Chuck's.
They left them there for a while, so many things still unsaid.
Future
"There are more open doors
Now than there have ever been
So let 'em close
And jump out the window with me
Worst case scenario
We land hand in hand on the street
But imagine if we flew
How beautiful we'd let that be?"
Orange felt like he was in a dream. His ears were ringing and his head was swimming. The sound of the crowd tonight was intoxicating, deafening. It reminded him of those pivotal moments in AEW's history, like when Punk had debuted or the Bucks had dropped the belts to the Lucha Bros.
This was one of those stories that felt like it was decades in the making.
Orange tapped the red and gold belt around his waist, in sheer disbelief that he was holding a title in this company. Standing ringside and taking in the match and the capacity crowd through his sunglasses, he felt like the indie comedy wrestler he'd been in the previous decade.
But Beyond and Chikara felt like lifetimes ago. He could barely remember the Gentleman's Club. All he could remember now was what the crowd kept chanting: Best Friends, Best Friends. Then, at a pivotal moment in the match as a hot tag was made: Chuckie T, Chuckie T.
In the end, Trent got the pin, but that wasn't what matter. The crowd counted with them, their whole hearts invested in Chuck and Trent winning as much as Orange's was.
Orange saw the pin happen in slow motion. Bryce's count of 1, 2, 3. In Orange's mind there was no way that could be the finish, even though he'd known the outcome before the match had even started. Then the bell rang at the timekeeper's table right beside Orange, and it stunned him into laughter.
Matt and Nick lay crumpled on the mat, bodies already bruising from the thirty-minute massacre they'd just taken part in. Orange had to step over Brandon Cutler, who'd been taken out by Yuta on the outside, to get into the ring.
Trent, forever the WWE guy, was trying to have his moment with dignity for the cameras. He held up one half of the AEW tag team championships in one hand and reached for Chuck's with the other. Chuck took it, but could barely raise his own belt because he was crying so hard.
Orange took his place in the corner of the ring, just like they'd planned, watching Yuta and Kris take their places as well. The crowd was so loud Orange could barely hear himself think.
It wasn't until he began to cross the ring towards the newly crowned AEW tag team champions that Orange realised he was crying too.
They embraced and posed for the hardcam, Orange putting up an obligatory thumb even though it probably looked insane as tears streamed out from under his sunglasses.
They separated and Trent was giving Yuta a long-overdue handshake while Kris clapped him on the back and suggested she lift Trent up onto her shoulders in celebration. Chuck turned and threw his arms around Orange, panting and sweating, leaning on Orange like he'd fall over if he didn't hold tight enough.
"I LOVE YOU," Orange shouted in Chuck's ear to be heard over the noise of the crowd.
Chuck's mouth was right up against his ear when he replied, still out of breath, "I love you too."
After a long celebration they made it to the back, and Chuck collapsed on the floor by the nearest wall. Trent was debriefing with the Bucks down the hallway, but Chuck had settled behind a pile of boxes so that he could lean against them.
Chuck still had tears in his eyes when he breathed, "Nice belt."
Orange would have laughed, but something in Chuck's eyes went dark and whatever joke Orange was going to make in return got caught in his throat.
Orange felt like he was a building that was being demolished. Everything he knew, or thought he knew - about himself, about wrestling, about Chuck - was crashing down.
But Chuck looked so good with that shiny gold belt around his waist, his intense post-match eyes planted firmly on Orange. The building was being demolished, but rebuilt in its place was something truly beautiful.
For most of his adult life, Chuck's friendship had been Orange's safety net. He didn't need anyone else if he had Chuck. But tonight, the safety net was cut away and Orange flew without it for the first time.
Sheltered by the boxes, Orange leaned forward and kissed Chuck. Chaste but firm, squarely on the lips. Chuck, who knew Orange better than Orange knew himself, simply leaned his head back against the wall and smiled, eyes dropping closed.
"'Bout time," he muttered. "Now we can really get started."
With the safety net pulled from under their trapeze, everything was at stake now. At any moment they could drop and their whole world could shatter around them. But with that, their act just got a whole lot more compelling.
Orange leaned against Chuck's tired body; a pile of flesh and sweat that Trent soon came to fall into as well. If Trent had noticed anything between the two of them, he didn't say anything. Not that Orange thought he would care right now anyway.
Orange smiled, knowing the best was yet to come.

Roma Marinette pt. 1
Marinette's parents joined a traveling circus a year before Marinette was born. They make all the food that's sold as well as food for their fellow travelers.
Marinette is born in the circus. She is one of three kids. Only one year younger than Dick Grayson, Dickie as she grows up calling him, and five years younger than Johnny Grayson. Dick's nickname for Marinette is Marigold. Marinette takes to the Graysons she and Dick adore each other and all the Graysons love little Mari. With Tom and Sabine's permission they start training her along with Dick. Both kids fast learners with what seems like an ability to completely defy gravity and break its rules.
Dick and Marinette are stuck at the hip learning everything their circus family can teach them. Marinette is the one that decides that they should learn knife throwing and fire spinning. While Dick decides they are going to work out with the strong men and learn how to handle the animals.
While they are still too young to join in on the trapeze they are allowed in the show. Together they wow crowds doing cartwheels, flips, and complicated floor routines together. Once they are 6 they are allowed to fly with the rest of them. Their shows garner more and more attention, everyone wanting to see the two youngest aerialists in the world.
Everything is perfect in their lives, until they go to Gotham for a show. Dick parents begin acting weirdly, hugging Dick more and more, while looking at him in a resigned manner. This causes both to worry a bit but they don't let it show. When Dick sees people messing with the trapeze both of them brush it off. Before the show they meet the young Drake family and take a picture together. Marinette and Dick are on one knee together with Tim sitting on their bent knees.
When the lines snap Marinette and Dick stand on the boards opposite of each other watching in horror as the lines snap. In minutes both are on the ground near the bodies, Dick crying silently holding his mother's bracelet while Marinette holds him tightly crying herself.
Bruce walks up and talks to the two and is slightly surprised to find that Marinette wasn't their daughter. Marinette smiles weakly telling them she was pretty damn close. Bruce comforts Dick before going to talk with the Commissioner and a Social Worker.
Before the end of the night Dick is packing up his stuff and getting ready to leave with the social worker. Bruce never leaves their sides. Marinette stops Dick from leaving and hands him her stuffed tiger named Sikhaya. Dick hugs it tightly before pulling out his elephant Zitka and giving it to her.
Marinette pulls him into a tight hug sniffling into his shoulder.
Mari- Don't you dare forget me Richard Grayson. We'll find each other again someday Dickie. So until then don't you dare forget me.
Dick- I could never forget you Bluejay.
Two months later Marinette and her parents leave the circus and settle down in Paris. It breaks their hearts but after the Grayson's tragedy Tom and Sabine find it the best option.
Dick and Marinette don't see each other for a very long time, but they never forget the other.
Zitka is well loved and taken care of. The stuffed animal has a special place on Marinette's bed even when she is an adult. While Dick takes to putting Sikhaya on a shelf when his brothers come into the mix, not wanting it to be destroyed if they become destructive.
Dick grows up as Bruce's son becoming Robin when he turns nine. At thirteen he joins a team of young superheroes, at fifthteen he leaves behind Robin giving the mantle to his new brother Jason. He also begins dating Barbara. They break up a year later when Dick realizes he is continually comparing Barbara to Marinette. When he becomes seventeen he mourns the loss of his brother and nearly kills the Joker, only stopped by Batman. He takes a year break, taking counseling sessions with a reformed Harley Quinn. During his break he meets Tim Drake once again, he doesn't remember him however. He begins training Tim to find solace in acting as a brother again, he also digs up evidence on why the Drakes are terrible parents. Dick encourages Tim to become Robin, his first night out as Robin is Nightwing's return. When he turns 18 he goes to the police academy, and once he graduates he becomes part time and goes to college for business. He is 20 when Red Hood begins targeting the entire family. Jason was not prepared for how vicious Dick got when he shot Tim. Batman once again stops Dick in his anger, telling him once again that neither of his brothers would want him to kill. Jason uses this time to escape from the family and drops into hiding. He hacks into the Batcave and watches the caves videos and reading reports of what's happened since his death. When Jason finally comes back he is ashamed and is surprised when Dick simply hugs him crying. Things are tense between Bruce and Jason, but a few counseling sessions with Harley and their relationship is slowly rebuilding. Shortly after Damian comes into their lives. Dick is quick to knock Damian down when he attacks Tim. He tells Damian that he doesn't care who his mother is, or that he is Bruce's blood son. He slowly brings Damian into the family. While the boy is still distant and mean to the family they all notice he doesn't mean his insults anymore. When Dick is twenty-two he graduates college with a degree in business. He begins working at Wayne Enterprises as well, he mainly works from home and behind the scenes with Mr. Fox. No one outside the company knows he also works there, the entirety of Gotham believes he is just Officer Grayson.
Marinette grows up in Paris with absent parents. They love her but now that they have their own business they only have time for dinner with Marinette. While she is upset she joins gymnastics and aerial arts classes, quickly rising to the position of top student. She also begins going to regular school during her first day. She is so nervous she keeps tripping. The entire class soon begins to view her as clumsy, something that sticks. Even though Marinette only trips afterwards when someone does it on purpose, they choose to ignore the fact she catches herself quickly. While everyone believes she is just clumsy Marinette no one realizes that she is Paris's national champion in Gymnastics. Marinette is so good that they want her on Paris's Olympic team once she turns 16. When she turns ten she realizes she can sell her designs online. She pulls out all her notebooks pulling out her favorite designs and begins to make them all. Once done she creates a website under the name Marigold. On each outfit she hand stitches Mari in gold thread, for a signature marking. Marinette slowly makes friends outside her classmates, while they are nice they all stand by when Chloe attempts to bully Marinette and she doesn't like that. Especially when she sticks up for a few of them, she remains civil and polite to them although in her eyes she is clearly distant. When she is thirteen she becomes friends with Alya, the two girls slowly growing closer. She also develops a crush on Adrien that Alya blows way out of proportion wanting to help her new bestie. While Marinette likes Alya, Dick still holds the spot of best friend in her heart. Marinette also becomes Ladybug, she struggles at first but her years of training in flying helps her greatly and her aim has not deteriorated since leaving the circus. Marinette begins making less clothes and takes up karate classes as well four days go to gymnastics, two go to aerial arts and one to karate. Her three main instructors make the connection to her being Ladybug after a year, when Ladybug uses an aerial move that only she has ever used in front of them.
Aerial Arts- Madeline Saint Cloud
Gymnastics- Tasha Buchanan
Karate- Abraham Lebanon
Instead of confronting her the three get together and come up with a way to help Marinette. They start by deciding that Chat Noir either needs to get serious or get lost. One month later they all have solid examples of. why Marinette needs to bench him if he doesn't. It's at that time they confront her. Marinette attempts to lie saying that she isn't but stops when Madeline speaks up.
Madeline- My dear bird, you've never liked lying. You've rarely done it, and because of that you are truly terrible at lying
Marinette is dejected and apologizes to Tikki, but the Kwami just smiles telling Marinette that it wasn't the first time a Ladybug's mentor had found out.
Tikki- It's just never been three before!!
Marinette listens to her instructors carefully before telling them that she agrees. She tells them her partner looks through life with rose colored glasses. That while she does find him kind and silly she doesn't have a crush on him. That she doesn't find him as kind, caring, or as funny as Dick. She pauses after saying this, surprised that she hadn't said Adrien. Her instructors watch her as she closes in on herself taking a moment to sort through her thoughts. Once she is done a stray tear falls from her left eye.
Marinette- After all this time my thoughts still drift back to him…Chaton will never measure up to the person I truly love. His insistence and pushing do nothing more than cause stress on our partnership. I will look into having him either replaced or given one last chance.
That night she lays in bed hugging Zitka close to her chest as she stares out her open trap door at the stars. A few minutes go by and Marinette gets out of bed gently setting Zitka down. She walks over pulling the pictures of Adrien down, as well as his schedule tossing them all in the trash. Once done she climbs out onto her rooftop garden Tikki following her and sitting on Marinette's knee once the girl sits down.
Marinette- Adrien...Adrien Im sorry. I took your act of kindness and compared it to the kindness I use to have daily. Instead of seeing you, I saw Dickie. I thought I loved you, but I loved the kindness you showed me, that reminded me so much of him. I don't love you like that Adrien, instead of wanting to be your girlfriend. I just want to be your friend, so from this day on I will try harder to be that.
Two days later Ladybug tells Chat Noir to meet her on the Eiffel Tower that night after patrol. She tells him that she isn't in love with him and that she never will be. She knows she is coming off harsh and she tells him that, then explains that she needs to because after a year he is still acting like this. Chat is clearly saddened, this causes Ladybug to sigh and hug him.
Ladybug- I know it hurts, but you need to come to terms with this Chaton. You are my partner and you're like a brother to me. My heart is already taken, Chaton I have loved him since I was a child. Even if I was to date another right now I would just continue to compare them to my Robin.
Chat agrees to take things more seriously telling her that he still loves her, but he understands. He promises her that he will not let his feelings get in the way anymore. As the months pass the two become closer and closer. When Lila arrives Adrien already knows that she is lying and takes to avoiding her. When he spots Marinette getting put down by Alya and Nino for telling them Lila was lying he is quick to stand up for her. This causes a split among their classmates they don't want to be mean to Adrien, but he is always with Marinette. Lila is constantly telling the class that Marinette is bullying her and they want to do something but Adrien gets in their way. While Adrien and Marinette get closer they both realize one day that their partner in suits and civies is the same person. After them the two are rarely separate from each other. Gabriel finds Marinette very respectable despite Marinette being Roma, which would caused him to turn up his nose at first. He allows Adrien to spend more time with her, giving him permission to attend her gymnastics competitions. She is fifthteen when she becomes the new Guardian. By the time both are sixteen they have been outcast by their class and forced to the back. However they did not allow this to way down on them. Adrien had gained permission to model for Marinette along with their friends Luka and Kagami, and Jagged and Clara, two of Marinette's most famous clientele. Marigold was a very well known designer however no one knew what she looked like. Marinette never stepped out in public so the media didn't know the designer was a high school student. Marinette was also old enough to try for a spot on the Olympic team. She is sent an email the day of her birthday and Tasha laughs at the subtle begging in the email. Marinette is quick to agree and the four friends go out for dinner to celebrate. Only for it to be ruined when Lila shows up with Alya, Rose, and Alix claiming that they stole the table she reserved. Adrien was going to snap until Marinette placed a hand on his arm. She wiped her mouth standing up gracefully. She smiled politely at the four telling them not to worry the table was open now. The four walk away together not acknowledging Lila's glare. Marinette is seventeen when she participates in the Tokyo Olympics Adrien going with both her and Tasha. She uses Kaalki to get her and Adrien back to Paris for Akuma attacks. She loves her entire time in the Olympic Village. Marinette takes the gold for all four events. She is crying as she stands with her teammates four medals around her neck. Returning to Paris had been wonderful, she was greeted by the President and the Mayor and many fans. Adrien teased her relentlessly over the amount of fans she had. Once they returned to school the entire class demanded to know why Marinette never told them. Marinette simply sighs telling them she never kept it a secret. That she'd told them plenty of time she couldn't do something because of training. The class is really upset and they try to get Bustier on their side and the teacher just sighs softly wishing she never agreed with the Principal to teach Lila Rossi. Bustier knew she wasn't the best teacher but that girl destroyed her reputation by turning her class into the worst in the school. They are eighteen when they begin attending college Marinette for fashion and Adrien business. Marinette is nineteen when she and Adrien take down Hawkmoth only to discover Gabriel Agreste underneath. They hand him over to the cops before heading to the Eiffel tower together. Once there Adrien and Marinette de-transform and Adrien breaks down, Marinette pulls him into a tight hug tear of her own falling. Two months later Adrien sold off his father's company and the mansion. Moving into a cosy apartment with Marinette. Adrien takes the last name Dupain-Cheng and the announce it together on their way to the next Olympics when Marinette is twenty-one. She once again takes home all four gold medals, keeping her title for another four years. They graduate college together at twenty-two, and decide its time for the world to meet Marigold. Marinette reveals herself to the world as Marigold, and everyone in the fashion industry is talking about the young women who built her fashion empire before she was even 18. Adrien takes a job in her company head of PR. When they fully introduce themselves they become known as Marinette and Adrien D.C. The world is talking about the D.C. siblings, most of the conversations being around Adrien no longer going by Agreste. Together they travel the world, nothing changing in their lives until they visit Gotham, and Marigold receives an invitation to the Wayne Charity Event.
Marinette's first stop in Gotham is the place where the Graysons fell. Adrien goes with her hugging her gently as she softly cries. The next day she visits their graves alone, saying hello to the cold stone and asking if they remember her. She leaves flowers on the graves and a letter to each of them, including one to Dick.
Marinette- Thank you for all you taught me and encouraged me to learn. I never thought I'd use my flying to save peoples lives when I returned to Paris.  Please continue watching over me and Dickie. I'm going to find him, I promise.
She leaves the graves feeling a lighter happy to have visited them once again
When the Charity Event arrived Marinette and Adrien D.C. couldn't wait to leave their mark on Gotham high society. Unknown to both of them that Dick Grayson had become Richard Grayson-Wayne.
