Deep Drive: Station 3

Tulip can't help but struggle, however futilely, against the darkness that engulfs her...

And when she next opens her eyes, she finds she's wriggling on the floor of yet another platform. She lets out an awkward cough and stands up, nonchalantly brushing off nonexistent dust and taking a look around.

The ring once again holds only strange symbols, and the sleeping figure is a preteen girl with long blond hair (but with blue and purple bangs, for whatever reason). She wears a big comfy red sweater with sleeves that fade into sunset orange, and face, otherwise peaceful in slumber, is riddled with faint scars.

In the background is a starry night sky with two constellations traced out into the shapes of a massive lion and wolf, both seeming to surround the girl like dutiful sentries. The headshots depict two girls who look almost identical to the first, a boy with a comically large overbite, matching pairs of 5-pointed stars and stylized comets with cute cartoony faces... and Tulip herself.

"What the..."

She shakes her head, figuring she won't be likely to find any answers here, and focuses on the elephant in the room; a set of elegant -and transparent- double doors, their frame standing in the dead center of the platform.

Not seeing anything else to do, she walks up and tries the handle, her hand somewhat predictably going right through. 'Figures.'

A moment later, there's a flask of light accompanied by a short jingle of some sort, and she turns to find that a wooden chest has appeared near the edge, where she'd first arrived. She shrugs and walks over, not seeing any reason not to open it... and then instead of using her hands like a normal person she taps it on the lid with the head of her wand. Even more strangely, it actually works, revealing a bottle of green liquid inside.

"Why did I... oh, whatever." She just chalks it up to Dream Logic and grabs the bottle.

Another object appears, this time a large wooden crate, and she once again follows the bizarre compulsions she seems to have on this platform, first pushing the crate nearly to the edge of the platform and then hitting it hard enough to break it.

This somehow causes the door's frame to become solid, and a barrel to appear. Sensing the end of... whatever this has been is near, she runs at the barrel and smacks it hard enough that it goes flying off into the abyss.

This solidifies the door completely, and Tulip approaches it once more.

Before she can get close enough to grab the handles, it opens on its own, revealing a blinding white light within. It soon engulfs her entirely, no doubt taking her to parts unknown once more...

the thing about following along with videos is I still don’t really know how to make a website. I can follow directions, but there is a LOT I don’t know how to do. And I’m supposed to start working with clients?

I understand people's dissatisfaction with the lightfall campaign as a whole,with it essentially just being 60% strand tutorial and 40% actual story, but I don't understand why people hate nimbus. Ppl say they're "cringe" and have "bad writing" when 1. what people call cringe are lines that are very obviously intended to be cheesy jokes that Nimbus themselves knows are cheesy because they're just trying to cheer everyone up and 2. their writing around grief and dealing with the weight of being the protector and beacon of hope for the entirety of Neomuna was really good and it feels like people either didn't pay attention or are intentionally misrepresenting their character. I have a feeling most of the hate comes from Nimbus being non binary tbh, which makes me really sad and really angry cause they're genuinely a great character that a good chunk of the community wrote off as cringe without even properly giving them a chance due to bigotry or just it being popular to hate on anything related to lightfall. And especially as a nonbinary individual who loves that d2 is so unapologetic with its representation I really hope that the reception to Nimbus doesn't sway Bungie from further expansion of their character and more trans rep in the future. I have faith that the writers will stick to doing what they have been as they've been doing a great job so far though.

Super Luigi RPG: Curse of the Seven Stars

So.. I participated in the 2019 Narowrimo, but I didn't have a lot of story ideas, but I still wanted to make words. So I typed out my idea for a sequel to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, one of my favourite RPG... I decided might as well share it... I wrote it as if I was talkin' to folks.

While playing Legend of the Seven Stars, I had a very important desire for a sequel. Sadly there is none. I mean, I know we got the 'paper Marios' and 'Mario and Luigis', but I really wanted something back in the same universe as Legend of the Seven Stars. So, I came up with my own sequel to which I’ll share with you guys. 

It’s not completely planned or organized, because we all know this will never come true, but here’s my delirium. 

So, the title of this sequel would be Super Luigi RPG; The curse of the Seven Stars. It makes it very clear that it’s the sequel, doesn’t it? And, well, Mario isn’t the Main, his bro is! Yay!

Anyways, the beginning would be almost frame by frame, the same as Super Mario RPG. Toadstool (-err I mean Peach) is in the field, playing with flowers and butterflies, then Bowser appears in the sky, kidnapping her with Mario rushing out to save her. Then, there’s a zoom-out, and Luigi there gardening or something with a bored look. Saw the scene. Shrugs. He resumes his activities. 

After a while, Toad rushes in:

“Luigi! Something terrible has happened!” And Luigi, like Mario, did in Legend, pantomimes everything.

“No! Mario’s gone! Come to Mushroom Kingdom and we’ll explain everything!” 

So, little adventure zone, some tutorials, etc, etc. Luigi gets to the castle. There, the Princess is fuming, pacing around in the throne room, anger rolling off her. And Bowser’s there too. His expression shifts between annoyed, angry, and crying (I love his big tear drop emote). It’s obvious the Princess is yelling at him!

When she spots Luigi she goes, “Oh! Luigi, thank goodness you're here!” And she explains what going on. 

When Mario came to save her, Bowser strapped him on a rocket and blasted him off! They can’t find Mario anymore! There’s a hole in the sky to boot!

Bowser tried to defend himself, saying he expected Mario to free himself and win. But his arguments do not placate Princess, and she orders him in the "dungeon". More on that later.

To Luigi, she asks if he can escort her to Nimbus Land. They might have seen Mario or have more info on the hole in the sky. Of course, Luigi agrees!

Oh, before I forget, I need to tell you guys that none of the main characters in Mario RPG are going to be party members. They’ll play prominent roles, but won’t be playable. So, Luigi’s trek with the Princess is an escort mission. He fights alone when a fight occurs for the moment.

As they go to Nimbus land (not via cloud car because of reasons) they find the place filled with dangerous beasts. 

At Nimbus land, they are welcomed by panic. Mainly about the hole and the beasts. They reach the castle and they talk to Prince Mallow. He’s the one in charge right now because his parents have gone on vacation. 

“Oh, man! Why is this happening? it’s my first day!”

The princess recounts what happened. Mallow explained they didn’t see Mario, but he agrees that investigation is needed. The princess and Mallow get excited about the adventure. However, it’s short-lived because the Nimbus chancellor (or maybe Frogfucius) tells them they can’t go! It’s not proper for royalty! Mallow complains, but Peach agrees and whispers something like ‘Just play along’ to Mallow. More on that later.

Luigi is asked to check on the hole.

When he gets there, it’s finally time to meet his first party member! And it’s none other than… Gaz!

Yep, kid Gaz is now a teen and he got "strong and cool" because his dream came true (okay not really..). He’s ready to be a hero, however, there haven’t been a lot of opportunities. Until today.

Seeing as Luigi has the same goal, they team up. 

Little about Gaz: He’s the team tech guy. To reach the hole, he builds something… A flying machine or scaffolding or something. In fights, he uses huge mechanical arms, and maybe some cannons or steampunk lasers. The reason, well, I always wondered who made Geno’s weaponry that managed to knock Mario out. I decided it was Gaz, so he has some building knowledge.

Anyways, Gaz and Luigi adventure up and out of the world. 

Out there, there are in space and Star Beings investigating what’s going on. A meeting is held.

Seems the star road got blasted beyond into other worlds!

In the Star meeting, a Star stands out more, and it happens to be…! Geno’s true from! Gaz finds it super cool, and asks Geno to come with them and find the stars piece! He even got his old doll that he carries around as a good luck charm!

Geno’s interested, however… He can’t. He’s like the minister or something… He’s got too many responsibilities now. 

“Aw, shucks,” Gaz says. He’s a bit put off but understands. Geno informs them that he think he knows where the first star can be found. Gaz and Luigi set off to go there. 

And unbeknownst to them, a little star being follows them. - It’s not Geno. More on that later.

Now, I haven’t determined all the worlds, nor all the adventure. I thought that maybe the first star would have fallen between Sarasaland and Beanbean Kingdom. For a reason that would be discovered later, the Stars tend to corrupt and turn hostile to everyone that gets in contact with them. 

So, Sarasaland and BeanBean Kingdom are starting up a conflict, whereas they always were friendly before. Luigi needs to be the diplomat, going from one to the other to calm them down before war breaks out. (And seeing as Luigi pantomimes everything, it'll be funny when he just... jumps around to explain his points of peace)

And, in case you didn’t know, Sarasaland is Daisy’s kingdom and BeanBean Kingdom is Prince Peasly - Luigi’s "love" interests. Course, they don’t know him in this game, but they’ll be fighting over him for his diplomacy until the star is found. When the star is found, the hostility between Peasly and Daisy immediately goes away and they return to being best friends again. 

Another world I thought would be nice to visit would be Donk City and meet Mayoress Pauline. 

Another fun world would be a ghost world. Throughout the game, most people would ask Luigi who he is and find it unbelievable that THE Mario has a brother, etc. Y’know, the typical joke. However, when he gets into the ghost world, all the ghosts know HIM and they are equally frightened and honoured by his presence. Luigi stays mostly frightened - but it’d be a nod to the Luigi’s Mansion franchise, basically. 

I thought that one world might be Smity’s original world. Smity was a criminal there, so the people are happy he’s gone… Except maybe some surviving lackeys that might still be up to some nasty things.

Other than that, the worlds are rather vague…

Hum, anyway, let’s get back to the story details.

Remember when I said a small star being followed Luigi and Gaz out? That star will become the 3rd party member. The star follows them, and secretly helps them a bit (turning a switch, opening a door). As the story goes on, the star gets a littler bolder and stops hiding. It says it wants to be a Star Warrior or some such, but hasn’t passed the academy requirements. It wants to help! It wants to be a hero! Wants to get recognised! Wants to do a good job. 

(( By the way: that’s one of the game’s themes between all party members. To be recognized/to achieve something/to surpass/to not be in someone else's shadow. ))

Anyways, at some points, probably during a boss fight, the star gives a huge help! And they invite it to join the party. 

“Oh! Can you inhabit this doll? Like Geno did?” Gaz asks. The star can. (the doll = Geno's doll that Gaz still carries around for luck).

So, the star agrees, but they don't feel right to have Geno's appearance, so they customize the look.

((I tried drawing the character. I’m not totally satisfied with the look I doodled. I’ve been calling her Luna mainly because I saw the hair be a lot like Luna from My Little Pony. To recognise the star from the other stars, I wanted it to trail a starry sky sparkles around - so it’s cool for that aspect to stay. Their true name is probably ✶☾♪ ))

And I’m using she/her pronouns even though she’s non-binary, just like Geno was, but he still used he/him. The rest of the clothing looks like Tifa from FF7. She’s the team’s bruiser. Her hands are overly large for better punches and kicks.

Anyways - Let’s get back on another story element. 

Remember Princess Toadstool and Mallow? Well, they, of course, ran away. And they donned some very bad superhero costumes! Sometimes the party would encounter them when they reach a star and they would steal it before. Who are those masked heroes! I don’t know if Luigi and the others noticed who they were or not…

Okay, let’s rewind again! Remember Bowser? So he got locked in Mushroom kingdom’s dungeon. Which, by the way, it isn’t much of a prison… It’s honestly, just a very nice guest room. Kinda like the dungeons in Brightmoon from Shera…

Anyways, Kamek and his apprentice come in to free him. Kamek takes his place (he sees it as pampering time while Bowser is impressed by the sacrifice.)

Bowser does an epic oath that he’ll show the Princess he’s a cool dude and save Mario! And then he’ll boot him off again to show he’s powerful! It’s a skewed logic-type thing. He orders the apprentice to teleport them into the sky hole. So, the party members will occasionally encounter Bowser as they try to get the stars. Sometimes Bowser, the Princess Mallow, all appear together for some confusing hijinks... 

When the group encounters Bowser, it’s often a boss fight and Bowser orders the apprentice to boost him up, like Kamek is known to do. Though, it might not be perfect… Chaos time!

Now, I mentioned earlier that the stars had strangely corrupted the people from Sarasaland and BeanBean Kingdom. Well, it’s mainly because Bowser used EVIL fuel (left over from Smity’s gang) and when the rocket passed through the star road, it coated the stars with the gunk). 

Now, please remember that Mallow, the Princess and especially Bowser have been getting in constant contact with the corrupted stars, taking them away before the Party gets them. Well, it’ll have an impact. (So the Party never collects a star. It's always snatched away from them right before they touch it. Running gag type).

Bowser’s going to be acting, worse and worse over time, each time he gets another one… He’ll become so mean. 

So mean, and the apprentice will eventually abandon him and joins up with Luigi, Gaz and Luna to be the fourth and final party members. ((I thought of having five members but couldn’t figure out who to add that would fit thematically. So, they’ll be four and they’ll all fight together with a small twist. There’s going to be a front and back row. The person in the back acts as support. Each character in the back has a different way of supporting to make needed strategies.  The mechanic will probably exists before the full party, via guest members))

The apprentice, has the placeholder name of Magi, is the team’s spellcaster and healer. She wants to do a good job and prevent her Boss from becoming too evil. He was always borderline - but tolerable. Could be talked down from going too far. 

Anyways,  near the end of the game, Mario’s going to be found, next to the last evil fuel-soaked star. And evil Mallow, Princess, Bowser and Geno (he got corrupted at some point by touching a star) show up to fight for the star. So, it’s the start of the last boss fight, divided into three stages.

The first stage is against all five original party members from the 1st game. They’ll have their abilities like in the first game, so the showdown should be frustratingly hard. 

The second stage occurs, and then they are all defeated. They come back to their senses, except Bowser! He’s been exposed for too long. So he does the whole evil laugh and forces Magi to boost him super-sized. 

The third stage occurs after he is defeated. He shrinks and all the evil fuel he was exposed to and all the evil fuel on the stars coalesce into an evil ooze similar to Ferngully’s villain. 

Once the fight is won, it is' conclusion time. The stars' pieces are clean, the road is rebuilt. The star folks recognise Luna as being good enough to join the ranks. Gaz is also invited to become the Star Hero (a star appears on his mushroom cap). Magi isn’t fired and even gets a ‘You did a good job’ from Kamek and Bowser. Luigi gets his bro back and everyone celebrates in his honor!

So, yeah, that’s the sequel my mind created! It’s very incomplete because, well, it serves no purpose to create more, for it’ll never come true (unless Nintendo a fan… If so, Nintendo, please hire me!)

Episode 6

Minor, early spoilers regarding Reign of the Exarchs.

Someone told me that running Mage meant dealing with the obsessed. No one said it was like herding cats. This was a slow session, though not because of the mechanics this time, but just sheer pacing.

This session was the first session in maybe 4 or 5 where we had a full table that had the Cabal completely together. We last left off with Hel on his way to work on a hot Tuesday morning, only to find that his impromptu roommate has left after only a few days stay -- they left behind a note and a curious bell. Not one to stand a riddle that appears to double as a pun, per the note, Hel goes to the Diner, an establishment the Cabal agreed to be the focal point (they're lacking a proper Sanctum, but perhaps some goading might change their minds).

The Cabal experiments a little, discovers the artifact's true ability. Apparently, only Hel really has a job, and one that he can feasibly slack off on, so they set off to follow Cherrim to the Verge she discovered last episode, briefly encountering the new Herald for a new Consilium that has just been stood up in Phoenix, whose only word to share (for now) is: respect the Gold Laws, the door is open for any agreements to be made seeing how the Cabal is a part of a Nameless Order outside the Pentacle, and all should be good. I suppose it could be mildly threatening if the NPC was played off as being very blasé about it.

Naturally, players gonna player, and internally decided to buck against the perceived overreach of authority. I'm sure that'll go over well sometime in the next couple of sessions. But for now? A group retreat, hiking through a mysterious Verge that has popped up in the middle of a dirt lot; previously unkeyed, it seems that someone has set one, but Chufi identifies it right away: simply write "I understand the dangers" in the dirt, erase it, and enter freely. The spell is from a signature nimbus they're unfamiliar with, and perhaps if they don't rub the wrong shoulders, one they'll never know.

Much of the session was spent just hiking around the dense jungle of the lot, bonding in a way, getting blisters from mysterious plants and heat exhaustion from the contrastingly wet heat of the Jungle-Verge. This was the meaningful part. Seeing the Cabal act as a Cabal, which hasn't happened since Tutorial-Safehouse arc of ep. 1 & 2.

The remainder of the session is handled with one-roll "extended" checks (taking a page out of Geist here) where we begin to setup several ploys:

(Samael, vampire hunter) Rooting out vampires who've corrupted the church.

(Hel) Learning more about this riddle, fulfilling an Obsession, and being drawn into a deeper Mystery.

(Chufi) Asked a favor by her mentor to make a portal to Phoenix; the two live on the moon, you see, having been established and evacuated by an archmage a few generations ago. Chufi has a very specific Aspiration, a meta-one, that reads "to be betrayed or to betray her mentor." This plays into that. And for the astute among you who're aware of the things that likely live out on the moon, well... open portals intentionally left open longer than they have to? Someone's playing at something.

19th October

I was able to figure out the issue with baking. The UV shells’ padding margins were insufficient for the 4k resolution textures.

I am done with the texturing stage of the house and the Nimbus.

I took both models to Marmoset Toolbags 4 during the texturing process to check how the textures came out.

Learning from the Unreal Sensei Tutorial, I created a small island landscape and used a water system in UE5 for the ocean.

I have imported all the objects into Unreal. Set up the material shaders and scene/environment.

This is the progress made so far, I’ll try to get the lighting closer to reference. I have yet to figure out how to get the stylized clouds in the background.

A little update: I've found a way to make gifs without necessarily using Photoshop and importing each frame etc. So here is a Small Tutorial for People Who Are too Dumb to Use Photoshop and use CapCut PC™ (like me): - I import the .mp4 clip(s) in CapCut PC (either downloaded or screen-recorded through Nimbus Screenshot, which is a Chrome extension I use when I want to download scenes that aren't too long and don't want to go through the hassle of downloading an entire episode or scene pack - you can use MAGIX Vegas or whichever video editing tool you would normally use); - I add all the pretty effects, filters, subtitles, etc. - I export the clip(s) as .mp4 (since CapCut PC doesn't allow you to export a clip as .gif and my phone is too old and too slow to use CapCut); - I upload the small cute clip on Giphy, adjust, trim etc. (it's free!); - Once uploaded, I save it as gif Tada! Your clip is now a GIF that doesn't weigh 373857827 MB and is not awful quality

Does anyone know a good tutorial on how to make gifs? I've never used any programs, only CapCut + converting to gif online, but I noticed that the quality is not that good + I have issues w/ uploading on Tumblr because of the 10mb gif limit. Are there any good programs for making gifs out there that are not too hard to use?

hey! first off, thank you so much i really appreciate it.

now i will attempt to explain it, but i am never the best at these things so if you have any questions, feel free to ask! (all this is assuming everyone has a basic knowledge of gifmaking etc.) we're going to recreate a gif from my original set here.

FIRSTLY, you need your basic layout, now i used the rectangle shape tool to create the space for the big gif, and the little palette boxes, and fill them black so you can see them easily and move them around until i'm happy with the layout. and then move onto my text, the posters i was originally inspired by on etsy no longer seem to be there but the font i used which i *think* is what was used on those (as i wanted to get as close to my insp source as possible) is Nimbus Sans L for the title in bold, and Nimbus Sans Rounded for the rest (semi bold for the director and the genre/date and italic for the starring actors) and once i perfected the layout, and added a white layer for the background i saved that as a psd for future use. (make sure you're in timeline mode, and that the frame rate of this canvas is 23.976 fps - as that'll stop any issues when creating the whole gif.)

from here, you're free to gif make your first gif as normal, colouring it and putting it all together in a smart object so then you're ready to just paste it into this canvas, clipping it over the big rectangle, resizing as needed and then sharpening. (if you're unsure about clipping masks - this gifset relies on them - there's a handy tutorial here!)

so, here's how it looks with the main gif in place, and i've filled in my movie details for the film i've picked (i try to keep my layers as organised as possible so i recommend labelling things so you know exactly which text layer is which) i put all the text layers in a folder, and make a folder for all the palette rectangle boxes too.

next is the fun bit, or at least it is for me (personally i like to zoom in for this bit) but it's time to colour pick for the palette. before you do this make a new layer for each palette and clip one to each of the palette boxes like below.

like i said, i like to zoom in for this, but select the eyedropper tool, and start picking your colours, i try to do it in a gradient, usually starting with either the brightest or darkest colour etc. for this gif i want to go from browny red to blue. once you pick your first colour, go to the layer clipped to the rectangle you want that colour and fill it with your colour. keep repeating this process until all your colours are picked and you're happy with your palette.

and here is what you're left with. so now, just do what you'd usually do when saving your gifs, i personally put everything back into frames, so i can save with a timing of 0.05. and then repeat for each gif until you've got a beautiful gifset that you love!

i hope this made sense, and is easy enough to follow! sorry if it's a bit rambling and ridiculous, me and explaining things are not compatible.

Places of mind: Modelling and texturing

I have compiled a PureRef with different views for the main asset, the House. I also want to implement the Nimbus cloud in the foreground with the trail as seen in the main reference.

I was able to find a blueprint with front, side, and top views of the house, which I imported into Blender. I started with the high poly first.

It is a fairly old anime hence, the asset did not have minute details, so I went with a basic poly modelling with bevelled edges workflow for this assignment. The main aim was to get everything into Unreal and set up an environment there.

Meanwhile, I started with Unreal Sensei’s Unreal Engine 5 beginner's tutorial. I got a basic understanding of the material shaders, Landscape sculpting and foliage.

I also sculpted the nimbus cloud in Blender then renamed all my high-poly and low-poly meshes before taking it to substance for texturing. 

I am trying to bake the bevelled edges from high-poly onto low-poly but I am getting the sharp edges in the output. 

I have watched a few tutorials on YouTube to fix it, hopefully, I can find and rectify the issue.
