Avalon (1990). Polish-Jewish family comes to the U.S. at the beginning of the twentieth century. There, the family and their children try to make themselves a better future in the so-called promised land.

They just don't make intergenerational family epics like this anymore. I was really moved by this one! Warm, funny, and sometimes quietly devastating, you really feel you get to know this family intimately, with all their grace and determination and foibles. It's bolstered by some really lovely performances, beautiful performances and a lovely score. Old fashioned, but in a really good sort of way. 8/10.

Home Alone (1990). An eight-year-old troublemaker, mistakenly left home alone, must defend his home against a pair of burglars on Christmas Eve.

It's pretty easy to see why this has become the Christmas classic that it has. Charming, funny, with some real emotional catharsis, it just gets everythng that a Christmas movie's supposed to be. It's kind of wild, in that sense, that it was nominated for two Oscars, particularly in a year that was genuinely pretty stacked. I can't imagine a family comedy film like this being nominated like this today. 7.5/10.
