When I saw the YouTube thumbnail for the “Not Just a Goof” documentary on Disney+ I thought we’re getting a DT17 short ft kid Donald watching an AU where his family actually cared and he met Goofy.

If you were truly down with A Goofy Movie in the day then Dr. Looney's Remedy was also ingrained into your DNA. The moment they started Not Just A Goof by bringing up its inclusion on the VHS was the moment I truly knew I was about to watch something special and handled with the utmost care. This shit did not disappoint. The fact that they even include mention of the mockumentary that Atlanta did was also really cool to me.

If you're someone who has spent years, decades even, loving and obsessing over A Goofy Movie this documentary felt almost like being acknowledged. It felt as if I was being rewarded for being a fan of something that was never treated as well as everything else at Disney with finally being let in behind the curtain. It really is a documentary for the fans by fans. It also gives this sense of closure as a fan to know that everyone involved knows just how much the movie meant to us and still does.

Like, seeing these hit something in me and this was just at the start of the damn thing. I don't know how else to describe it other than this sense of warmth because Max and Roxanne, man. More people need to know about them together, more people need to utilize them together and I just think it's really cool how someone thought enough of Roxanne to make something of her as well. Roxanne inclusion will always make me happy.

I just saw not just a goof, and it is really good and brings out the issues and problems that disney at the time won't admit, and people as well. Where disney didn't really see the goofy movie as equal level as the lion king. And people/the audience aka the critics who complain that they ruin goofy as a character.

They want to protect and box the character(s) in the same mold. Which fits the message with the Jim Henson documentary as well. Which current issues of the muppets continue to be in a box of unchange potential. Which jim, himself didn't want. He likely would have been 100% on board and fine with these changes to make the muppets interest in today's society.

This is the same message for goofy as a character. A story of son and father and their familiarity issues. And finding an understanding of each other's generations and interests. And goofy having to change to feel emotion and be something than a box with one personality, one note character.

I loved it.

This message could be for all characters like mickey or donald that also get these comments as well. "They are not the same"

but they are with added history and personality.

Fans worried that changing a character(s) might hurt them, but to make something, you need to take risk like adding something special.

If disney doesn't explore that or fans accepting them as well, than we might not get any more content or films like the goofy movie. They explored risk and creativity.

If you love A GOOFY MOVIE, please please give yourself the gift of watching NOT JUST A GOOF. It just came out for the 30th anniversary (today April 7th, 2025) and it is a very fun documentary, filled with incredible behind the scenes footage. Plus so much heart.

The last segment of it had me in overwhelming tears, feeling the connection of all my fellow fans, that this movie found its audience like the film makers wanted all those years ago. In another world, we might've never had AGM; in another world, we might've had a bigger audience embracing it from the get to; but we're so lucky to live in the world where we *do* have it.

Yesterday, my sister and I watched that new Goofy Movie documentary on Disney Plus, and one part that really stood out to me, was the fact that Jeffery Katzenberg once considered having Steve Martin voice Goofy (with his normal Steve Martin voice).

I can’t even begin to imagine how awful the movie would’ve turned out if they had gone that route! So thank God the filmmakers stuck to their guns and convinced Katzenberg to keep Bill Farmer. 🤣

I can't believe the people who made A Goofy Movie went like twenty goddamn years not knowing how very much we loved their movie. Like I'm all about slow burn and delayed gratification and the kinds of stories where people think that their love isn't reciprocated, but this? This was criminal, I'm emotionally compromised. It's the Goofy Movie. It's a shining beacon of love, a perfect gem of what parenthood can be, and they just didn't know??? Fucking hell, I need a hug

GOD, the part in Not Just a Goof where they talk about the critical reception of A Goofy Movie at the time is so frustrating, seeing people at the time criticizing Disney for making Goofy an emotional character.
