“I was you,” Vizaeth tells him, surprised at how strong his voice is, compared to the rest of him. “I mimicked your magic.”

“Don’t make me leave, Pharaun, please, I—”

“I’d never let anyone else put their knife in me.”

“You brought this on yourself, Merdax. You laid hands on a sacred thing—did you think there wouldn’t be a price for your blasphemy?”

“I can’t work enchantment,” Vizaeth snaps. “It hates me. Keep your opinions to yourself.”

“I’ll take whatever Lolth wills me to have.”

“You’re dead, you’re not real, you’re dead, you’re dead, you’re dead—”

“I love him. You don’t understand, no-one understands—he’ll want me again, I can make him want me, I can fix it if you just stop touching me—!”

“Shut your filthy mouth,” he hisses, the words reverberating with death magic.

“Because you think I’ll do whatever you want if you fuck me hard enough.”

“Come on,” he taunts through reddened teeth. “Hit me hard enough and you can fuck me again, how about that? Don’t you want me, Rhylfein? Show me how bad you want me!”

“Why does this keep happening to me?”

“I’m doing this because I love you,” Vizaeth chokes out, and lunges forwards to slice the knife across Pharaun’s throat.

“I gave you everything, and you ruined it all with petty games. Trying to make me jealous, take necromancy from me, make me leave Sorcere. Leave you!”

“It’s like you said; if I didn’t like this so much, you wouldn’t be able to do it.”

“Probably. But maybe they’re savoring the moment. You know, before they chop us up and sell our parts on the black market?”

“I said—keep going!”

“Mhm. It’ll be fine. Call Captain, yeah? Tell her we—“

“…don’t talk with your mouth open, stupid.”

“[That’s not true.] If it were, I wouldn't have to be so discreet about it, yeah? And on top of that—“ she went back to her book “—I don't care. It's not the case now, and it won't be anytime soon."

“You are blessed, silly, if we're going off the fact we have each other. Did you forget who saves your ass every day? Me, that's who. That’s a blessing in and of itself.”

“‘No need’, Captain? Despite the fact that we’re in hostile territory, alone, and surrounded by deadly creatures able to tear us to shreds? I think I've earned the right to be as serious as I want to be, thank you.”

“I… I’m fine. I’m fine”

“…A good sandwich. I’ll do that [leave you, an outlaw, alone] for a good sandwich.” *pause* “Any food, really, bounty hunting isn’t a stable enough job for me to care about ‘justice’ at this point.”

For this challenge, the character I´ll use will be Warrick, from my original story "Chimeras". Spoiler warning!

“I'm just someone who wants to help and do the right thing.”

“Don’t worry, I have no prejudice towards chimera children.”

“That Roach really sounds like a real son of a bitch.”

“Okay” he said. “But with one condition: you can only get out of the car when I tell you, capisci?”

“Take everything you want. We won’t be coming back to this place.”

"I was alone," he told him. "And I wanted to be alone."

I will, of course, be honoring my beloved Arlasaire today with a combo of spoken dialogue and narration. That being said, I don't really write good out-of-context bangers lines lol -- everything only barely works because of the context. (I wish I was. I'm not that cool though.)

"And it was my fault! Because I wasn’t enough!"

"You don’t care about me."

"You don’t know me."

"Nesa… I warned Zal so I’ll warn you too: I’m not very good at relationships."

"…I’m not a lady. The Aftokratoria has stripped away our titles, remember?"

"I was just House d’Magnia’s ward. They took me in after a Dragonstorm burnt down my village. Fed me. Trained me. Gave me purpose."

On that first day after they found me, — back before I was “Arlasaire”— I’d been the one to kill the spider crabs chasing Lord Einharde’s second lieutenant.

"Lord Einharde embodied the House words with all his heart. “Eshew Axiom for Ascendancy.” This made him cold, but he was good to me."

His name rotted in my memory now.

"…The Arlasaire you knew a year ago would not have slaughtered anyone, if YOU had asked."

I felt the familiar knife twist in my chest. I stifled laughter. Euphoria. What a beautiful liar…

The Burned Maiden bled from the body and it was just the girl. Just me.

"And then… I fell for this priestess lady. We kissed. And then… she also tried to kill me."

"It is too cold and dark to be kind. Spring is not like this in the North. You have to actually wear clothes."

"You… like me? Are we… a thing?"

...Guys, Arlasaire's so edgy and angsty, omg. I swear, she's actually a huge softie underneath, she's just not feeling safe in the narrative... And familiar toxicity feels safe...

I'm doing my autistic son Raven because he's my favorite child (and I have the most actually written for him 😅)

"I'd protect you even if it wasn't my job."

“How many times have I told you that you need to be more careful with sharp things, princess?”

 “I agree that they [Sapphire's parents] are a little much, but if I don’t do my job and get you back before they realize you’re gone, they will quite literally kill me. And I would prefer to keep my head attached to my body.”

Raven’s head whipped between the bandits now barreling towards them, and the princess. “Did you do that on purpose?” / She grinned smugly and shrugged. “Maybe.”

“I need to get out of here,” He gasped, “Can-... Can we go somewhere else, please? Somewhere that’s not so-” He squeezed his eyes shut. “...Loud?”

“I can braid hair,” He said, “I’ve mentioned before I have sisters, you think I never braided their hair?”

She shifted, turning so her back was to him. “Alright. Do your worst.” / He gently pulled her long auburn locks out of its braid, softly detangling them. “I intend to do my best, actually.”

“What about this: if you promise to be a little more careful and not put yourself in danger, I’ll-“ his face twisted in confusion and concentration for a second. “I’ll… breathe down your neck less…” He blinked, running a hand through his soft, dark brown waves. “Is that what you meant? That’s what you meant, right?” [my sweet autistic son, i love you]

"I think kidnapping someone to be their slave over a stream is more rude than what I said."

"Do you think I got all of them?" / Raven nodded to the glittery carnage in her wake. "Uh, yes, I think you did." He rubbed his sore wrists, then gestured cautiously to his sword. "Can I... have my sword back please?"

“Do you ever wish you hadn’t become my bodyguard?”  / “Sometimes-” Sapphire’s face fell and he quickly added. “-but other times I wouldn’t change it for the world. You’re the most frustrating person I’ve ever met, but… also the most happy and excited to live. I haven’t known a lot of people that were excited to just live.”

[Raven] “You’re kind of ruining my rescue plan.” / [Sapphire] “Oh, I’m ruining your plan? You’re the one ruining my escape plan-”

“I will always come for you, you understand?” He told her. His voice cracked as he choked on tears, but he couldn’t have cared less. “I will always come for you, no matter how long it takes. And if you ever end up in that awful place again, I’ll bust down those dark gates myself. You’re never going back there if I have anything to say about it.”

“What if it weren’t murder though? What if it were… an unfortunate accident? We need the life essence for the spell don’t we? And the animals we’re killing for food clearly aren’t going to make enough for the spell.” He leaned on his wagon where his princess was fast asleep under her curse. “I’m just saying-”

“No. Well-” Raven bit his lip as he watched her sleep on his shoulder. “She never got them before. After rescuing her from the sleeping curse… she gets them every night now." ... "She’s not scared of anything, ma. Or… she wasn’t… until…”

I'm going to do this for Kaori and I'm going to pull the quotes from Nightshade. If you've read BtD, hopefully you can catch the similarities and differences between prequel Kaori and BtD Kaori.

You probably don’t know but it’s called ghosting. It means you have a lot of channeling but you can’t control it.

Everyone else always lets me win, whether it’s games or conversations. But I can tell you aren’t like that. That’s what I mean by interesting.

My father ordered us to get results.

Well lucky for you, I’ve been studying channeling. I’ve spent time with the researchers too.

(to Mika, about Raymond) "He might end up hating me, but what keeps him safe and alive is none of what he’s told you getting out. To the police or the Syndicate.”

(to Raymond) "I know you don’t like the spell, but I don’t even know who [I am without the focus spell] okay? I’ve been focusing since I let you go. You don’t want the person from before that.”

Context: Raymond and Terran are talking about why Terran let Jesse live, and also why Terran had in the past let Raymond live/saved his life.

Raymond: “Everyone’s real.”

“Yeah, but you taught me that. Everyone who did feel real to me back then saw everyone else the same way I had. Maybe it was partially because you seemed to care, unlike anyone else did, but ultimately, I think that was it. You were real. So maybe all it took was talking to Jesse for him to be real to me. And I don’t know if that helps, because maybe you’re right that it should be everyone, or maybe it would be better if it’d come from something you said or did…”

(I'm going to count this as dialogue. It's a thought passed from Terran to Raymond that, as thoughts are, is a little jumbled:)

Tried to (can’t move) found Jodi, tried to free her (stuck) caught— failed— (The Judge) Mika was here, gave them something— mistake— Judge using me to bargain (care about me?)— can’t move— don’t do what they want.

(to Mika) "You and Raymond were so good at knowing what the right thing to do is. I watch you do all this and see how much you hate it, because you know it’s wrong. But I’ve only known that based on you guys’s example.”

(The actual dialogue here is 100% not true. But him lying here imo is a big part of his character. Basically, Terran needs to convince Alex that he isn't a threat, and recently Zachary advised Terran that Alex would exploit him caring about people. His denial here, him lying, in a way, really is about how much he does care. Also, I think it says a lot about him that he can and will solidly deny things like this in order to protect those he cares about. He's basically claiming that he doesn't care if Raymond lives, it was more about rebelling against Zachary than anything else. He ha also stated recently, in his thoughts, that to him, "freedom" is just being with Raymond)

“I want to leave. I want to quit.” I said, turning back to [Alex]. “Disobeying Zachary by letting Raymond live wasn’t the best way to go about it, I admit. But now he’s gotten me what I wanted. And you get what you want out of him. That was the deal you guys had, right? I’m not a threat to you because once this transaction is finished, I have what I wanted. Freedom.”

(to Mika) “I already know enough [about my parents' death]. I appreciate learning about them in the journal, I’d be willing to learn more about who they were, but not this. I don’t want to know how they died. Zachary has taught me a million way to kill someone and he knows a million more. I don’t want to know which one it was.”

(to Rayymond) “I’m constantly disappointing you. I’m always doing the wrong thing, the only difference is lately I’m finding excuses. I’m terrified of Alex paralyzing me again. But when I say you should leave without me, it’s what I owe not just you, but everyone— because I’ve always been sacrificing others for myself, haven’t I? Not even for my own life, just for…approval. The only difference lately is that you’ve become a part of who I’ll sacrifice others for, except you don’t want me to do that, and even if I try I don’t know how to do it. Even if I was ever able to leave, I can’t escape myself— everything I’ve done and everything I still want to do. And maybe we’ll all better off if you and Mika can escape and I’ll no longer be able to—“

I'll leave it there, since it said 15 of fewer, many of these are long, and I'm catching up to where I am. This was a lot of fun, and I definitely want to do this again for Raymond and Mika. I kinda wonder if I can even do it with Zachary. Please feel free to tag me again on this XD.

It's definitely difficult doing a POV character who's so often hiding things. I knew going in that this would most show up when he's talking to Raymond. But going through I saw some Very Raymond lines and Very Mika lines, and I think I talk more about Terran's character here, but I would like to pick out the lines that show the other characters whose only ways of showing their character is their dialogue (and actions).

OC in Fifteen

I barely do any of these for the Tempest Prince, so have one for Jason Haliday, the somewhat overprotective, batshit crazy older brother and resident mage of the group.

Also not all of these are narrated from the same POV, and some of these are simply his narration so technically one of his lines, anyway, just bear that in mind.

"Ya'll have been trying so bloody hard to piss me off for five years now. You really want to know what happens when I finally lose my shit? Well I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure myself," I could practically feel the thrum of raw power in my veins, an anthem to the coming storm to accompany the growing smell of distant rain, "Let's find out together, shall we?"

"The world needs heroes, and instead: it got us," Jason said from his corner, "I say the world can deal with it,"

I barely got out of the way before the vaguely Jason shaped blur passed me by, trailing the vague scent of brimstone and the words "Don't follow me!" as he went.

"Hey!" He belted across the way to them, wiping bright red blood from his lips and raising his little wooden blade yet again, "I ain't heard no bell, get your arses back here!"

"The plan?" He echoed. A moment later he simply shrugged, "Shit man, I don't know, just try to ball harder than this Cthulhu looking asshole, I guess,"

Great. Even in death someone needs me for something, fuck's sake.

"Hayibo, s'mos jus' down the street and a sho't left at the robot. You got that, nê?" I shot [Jason] a look to say that only he and I understood any of that. He shot me a grin saying that that was the point.

"I'm prancing around like a little leprechaun, does it fucken look like I'm ready for this?"

"Well," I said, sliding my back down the wall to sit beside her, "For what it's worth, I didn't mean for any of this to happen. Hell, I was just having a go at you for being an ass, but if I had any idea about any of this shit..." I shook my head, idly drawing in the dust around me, "God knows, I'm out of my depth on this one. You're right, I don't belong here,"

I probably should've been scared out of my mind. Instead, all I could think was 'Holy shit, I need to ask about this lady's workout routine',"

"It's not like you're the one getting hijacked by the drunken ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, now are ya?"

"You know, mom's gonna kill us if we die,"

"Sorry tjomma, but I just gotta ask you something- you know how it is, I'm neither subspecies: neutral party and all that- so uh... Exactly what the actual fuck is wrong with you?"

"Hey, Aten, can you tell your little cadre of gods to shut up for a second? The grown-ups are talking,"

Lord give me patience because I will strangle this boy if you give me strength.

OC in 15 (Tag Game)

I was tagged by @aziz-reads in this post! I'm excited to try this one for the first time, so thanks for tagging me!

Rules: Share 15 or fewer lines of dialogue from an OC, ideally lines that capture the character/personality/vibe of the OC. Bonus points for just using the dialogue without other details about the scene, but you're free to include those as well!

I think for this one, I'm going to share dialogue spoken by Sterling from Minding Q's, mostly because it's going to be really funny to me at least (CW: strong language)

“I wasn’t sure if it was gonna be warm or cold today, since it’s s’posed to rain later or whatever, so I just went with layers like usual. I think I made a mistake wearing pants, though. Damn, it’s hot out here.”

“Don’t die in there!”

“Wow—okay, stalker.”

“Okay, I should actually start heading back so I don’t get struck by lightning. Uh, but thanks for talking!”

“You’re not my real mom!”

“I don’t have a Pilea yet, actually. But-- I mean, if you want, we could swap. Not the whole plant! Just, like, a cutting. Or a leaf. I’d give you a cutting from one of my plants that you like. Maybe not the albo, though. Just ’cuz-- Sorry, I just sell cuttings from him, so I dunno if I could give you one for free. I could if I didn’t have to pay rent—but unfortunately, capitalism exists! And I have to buy groceries. Whiiiiich I totally forgot to do yesterday. Fuck—why does adulting have to be so hard?”

“Can you just let me deal with the consequences of my actions in peace?”

“Wait—oh my god, you’re right. It’s already Wednesday today. Ugh! I hate Labor Day! Not having classes on Mondays always fucks me up. I mean-- Sorry, you don’t mind swearing, right?”

“What! That’s lame. Seriously, why does being an adult have to be so lame?”

“Oh, sweet! They have grilled cheese sandwiches! I fucking love grilled cheese.”

“Sure! My class gets done at... Hang on. I literally just checked this. It ends at... No, not that button. That’s also the wrong button. Can I just-- Can I-- Oh my god—can I please open the right tab? There we go. That should not have been that hard. Uh... Thursday... Thursday... Where the hell did it go? Wait, I’m stupid—it’s right there. Jeez. Okay, it ends at two fifteen.”

“Yeah, I definitely was not paying attention.”

“That’s another thing I don’t like! Fucking roller coasters!”

“Huh? Oh. Oh, wait. Shit! I forgot—I’m super angry at you and never want to speak to you ever again!”

“Yeah, that’s prob’ly a good idea. I’m not really in the mood to die today.”

Yes I put those entire paragraphs in there on purpose. It’s just who he is.
