Brambletown is wild
I thought that it was just a cutesy visual album, but it has some truly out of pocket moments. I don't mean this in a "this kids show is DARK and EDGY and ACTUALLY FOR ADULTS" way, because it is still for kids and there's nothing wrong with that, but well, just look at the moments below:
"And old rotten fruit starts smellin' like wine" - alcohol references on a special that aired on PBS Kids. They must be getting really lenient.
"But we gotta start fixing what's broken / or we'll throw the whole town away" - what did they mean by this?
"Or we'll throw the whole world away" - I guess this means that we should recycle stuff or else the world will end?
"Sometimes I lay by the side of the road / gettin' thoughts out of my head / But they say that's just a waste of time / and they call it playin' dead"
During the possum song, Possum sees a vision of two animals burning down the forest, accompanied by the line "to think about life and death"
"We all got scars when we dredge up the past / by unearthin' pain, the pain won't last" - I actually love this line, it's deep
"Turnin' right into wrong and wrong into right" - what did they mean by this? Fox and Badger must be doing some nefarious things
"Lightnin' Bug's yellin' that his butt's on fire" - you don't usually hear "butt" in a preschool show
One song is about a fox and a hare who are in love, but after one disagreement, the hare dumps him and just up and leaves. This song is really sad but also deep
Badger gets so depressed that he starts drinking maple syrup, which makes his stomach ache and his paws shake. It sounds like he's an alcoholic
He then goes to Dr. Mole and says that his "body is fallin' apart" - aka what too much alcohol does to you
Then Badger goes to a cliff and "stare[s] down at death" - was he planning to commit suicide?
Fox and Badger have an argument, Badger spills the potion that Dr. Mole gave him, which leads to the entire town burning down. This is another tearjerker. Since it was specifically the potion that led to the town's demise, does that mean it would have killed Badger if he drank it?
This was all very unexpected, especially since it aired on a preschool channel, but honestly, I welcome it. Not everything in life is happy. The sad moments in our lives are just as important as the happy ones, and I think this is an important message to send to kids. Plus, even though the town was burned down, they rebuilt it, showing that they have the power to heal even after trauma.
More of this please. This can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Fantastic Mr. Fox, Coraline, The Brave Little Toaster, Don Bluth movies, and Miyazaki movies. These movies may be for children and families, but they are not afraid to get dark and depressing and have compelling storylines. Kids are very capable of digesting complex topics, and I hope we get more movies and shows like Brambletown in the future

Spotify Wrapped is a lie.
This is blatant Okee Dokee Brothers erasure.
Again.
The same thing happened last year, it's not like I didn't expect this. I mostly listen to Spotify at work, and I work with children, and there is clearly something in the algorithm that disregards any children's music that isn't The Wiggles or that one Jack Johnson album. None of the artists we listened to the most this year are anywhere to be seen on any of my lists.
Not one.
I know and the kids know The Okee Dokee Brothers were our Most Played Artist of 2024, just like we know Laurie Berkner's version of 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider' will have been in a race to the finish with their 'One Little Heart' for our Most Played Song (it's all about that teeny tiny spider in the third verse, they love that tenacious little spout surfer). There's a three-year-old here who's only recently stopped shouting "Tembo!" whenever you showed her the letter E—because "Tembo is an elephant" and elephant starts with E, don't you know—and that's not because Jay Laga'aia isn't a Top 10 artist in these parts. Look, these kids love a hot potato as much as the next person, though they're never sure if it's Sam or Emma who actually drives the big red car; but they do know that a cataclysm is an even bigger disaster (so sit down, catastrophe), the five little ducks will flippin' multiply if you don't "QUACK!" loud enough, and guacamole and salsa verde aren't dinner (they're just dips), but dance is a language that's so easy to speak, each tree has a tale to tell (but the green apple tree is where all the cool animals hang out), toothpaste and banjo and slippers and ketchup and pickles and carrots make an excellent stew, and sometimes it happens by mistake that we make the most beautiful things, and they didn't learn all of that from Wiggles Inc.
So take your Wrapped, Spotify, and kindly...just do better maybe?
youtube
(Look, the kids wouldn't know a Spotify Wrapped if you served it with sour cream and called it lunch. And who knows? Maybe the artists opt out. But, boy howdy, my Wrapped sure does look bananas with all the random one-offs that are now on record as my bangers of the year because most of what I was actually listening to is nowhere to be found. I swear to God I listened to some of these songs once.)
#Spotify Wrapped#Spotify#music#children's music#The Okee Dokee Brothers#and so many others we didn't just imagine listening to

Hope Machine - The Okee Dokee Brothers
"Hope Machine" is an homage to one of Woody’s journal entries entitled “New Year’s Rulins” which resolves to “work more and better, wash teeth if any, and change socks.” This little list inspired our own series of personal routine reminders in order to keep our hope machine running strong. Oh, what’s a Hope Machine, you ask? Well, everybody has to reach down deep inside to find out. Now’s a good time for that.
In the folk tradition of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, Songs for Singin’ inspires families to join in and belt out! As long as folks are singin’ together there’s a glimpse of hope for our world. So sing to the sunrise and sing to the moon. Sing with your kids and sing with your dog. Sometimes it just takes singing a song with one another to remind us that we’re all family.

I was trying to explain to my nieces what it meant to be nonbinary and they were just like ‘oh yeah like in the snowpeople song’.
We think little kids can’t understand these things, but kids can understand Anything if you make a catchy enough song about it.
So why do we roll up a circle, just to put ‘em inside a square . . . .

Okee dokes so I'm on a rewatch of Season 11 and my main problems are:
Amara didn't need that cleavage or that hair. A pre-biblical badass isn't going to come to earth dressed as Eva Longoria on the red carpet.
Amara and Dean didnt need to kiss. They just didn't. (It was hot though dammit)
John F. Showalter didn't need to let Samantha Isler talk to Dean with that soft vocal fry in her voice, or stroke his face. It was crazily inappropriate to let a young girl use that tone of voice which you'd usually associate with seduction when talking to a grown man. Maybe I'm over sensitive but it was just gross.
The episode 'O Brother Where Art Thou' did a GREAT job of re-establishing how scary and powerful Lucifer is, and then 12 episodes later they turn him into a petulant teen 🙄
My favourite things are:
Nate Torrence
Baby
Misha's performance in literally every one of his episodes. Seriously he was on fire this whole season. (with the possible exception of one scene that makes me cringe but I'll let him off)
Ruth Connell
Wayward gals ep
Red Meat
BILLIE
EILEEN
The Vessel - hot French girl, Misha's A+ Pellegrino impersonation, Jensen in a sailor outfit, what's not to love
The fact that Sam & Dean spend a lot of time in their most flattering fitted FBI suits
That whole exchange between Chuck & Metatron in the fake diner
All Rowena's witchy friends
Safe House ep
Actually it's definitely in my top 5 of all the Seasons

Hey 2020! (And a first Picture Book Wrap-Up)
Hello everyone! Welcome to a new year of reading in 2020. :)
2019 was such a busy year for reading. I ended the year having read 195 novels and 62 picture books (I probably read more picture books but I didn’t start documenting until later in the year). You can check out my entire year at this link here (thank you Goodreads for compiling that data)!
I’ve been deliberating on my 2020 reading goal and I’ve come to some decisions. I’m setting my goal at 150 novels PLUS 366 picture books (I really want to read 732 picture books but we shall see how this goes for me). I’m very much attempting to expand my book knowledge and picture books will be such a delightful way to do this. Feel free to send me any picture book suggestions you have and I’ll look into reading them!
Now to support this new picture book goal, I have decided to change things up! I usually post a novel review every Sunday but, for 2020, I’m going to post a novel review and a picture book wrap-up on alternating Sundays.
I’m starting 2020 with a picture book wrap-up! Here’s what I’ve read so far in 2020:
Image from my Goodreads account
All of these were incredibly adorable! I’ve already noticed that I’ve started the year with books by people who became famous in areas other than writing, which I find to be enlightening: the Property Brothers (from HGTV), Jenna Bush Hager & Barbara Pierce Bush (twin daughters of George W. Bush), Karamo Brown (from Queer Eye), and The Okee Dokee Brothers (musical duo). I’m definitely seeing themes push toward embracing oneself and being supportive of each other in this world. All the books have been so wonderful!
Anyway, I would love to hear from you. What are your reading goals for 2020? What picture books should I read? What was your favorite book of 2019? Message me here on Tumblr, or Instagram, or Goodreads!
