Billions in revenue from betting expected for Brazil states and municipalities

Study estimates new taxes on online gambling after reform in Brazil could generate up to R$7.4bn annually for local governments and R$11.1bn in total

The tax reform on consumption could bring new revenue to states and municipalities through the collection of the new Goods and Services Tax (IBS) on sports betting. According to estimates by the Tax Group Intelligence in Taxation, the reform could result in annual revenue of R$11.13 billion in dual Value Added Tax (VAT), with R$3.7 billion going to the federal government and R$7.43 billion to states and municipalities. The calculation is based on GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue), defined as the net revenue obtained by subtracting payouts to bettors from the total amount wagered. Under current rules, potential annual consumption tax revenue — considering federal PIS and COFINS taxes and municipal ISS (Service Tax) — would amount to R$5.99 billion, of which R$2.1 billion corresponds to ISS revenue for municipalities.

The taxation of betting under the VAT is still undefined. Online betting may also fall under the scope of the Selective Tax (IS), which remains under discussion. Constitutional Amendment 132/23, approved in December last year as part of the tax reform, still awaits regulation in Congress through bill 68/24.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Second Chance Ep 3 - this is proper YA, they are dealing with actual high school issues, picking uni, first crushes, online dating, etc... We even got a senior prom trope which almost never happens in Thai stuff (just the freshman uni competition variant). Standard plot pacing means PaperFah’s kiss was too early, might indicate we’re moving to uni in the second half of the series? Tropes included: let me feed you, hand hold, black & white striped shirt, floppy drunk & first kiss. 

Y-Destiny Ep 3 - the first MaxNat ep. Such fun to see them playing different characters. This one is enemies to lovers, tutor/student, but it’s using the “poor little rich kid loose cannon” archetype. Nat is doing his best, but it’s leaving me cold. Lots of tropes tho: boyfriend’s closet, floppy drunk, pillow clutch, the loom & water bottle. 

Lovely Writer Ep 8 - solid installment, good use of many tropes. I really like the leads and I’m glad there isn’t much side dish action, SibGene gave us: punish, touch your face, boyfriend claiming, kissing, sleep cuddling, symmetry, rooftop, cheek kiss, hand hold, and pillow clutch. 

Call It What You Want Ep 3-4 - couldn’t find the subs, don’t really care, will watch if it crosses my radar, otherwise I’m just not into it.  

Brothers Ep 11 - the “everyone wants Chol” show continues (but WHY?), he and Tri are cute together, and now I kinda just want Prab to end up with the twins. I’m confused by the teachers, but Boston showed up (from UWMA), and my boys KhunKaow got together (YES!), so I’m ultimately delighted with the episode. 

Fish Upon The Sky Ep 2 - the makeover happened, and we go from cute with glasses and braces to cute without them. (I’m reminded of those 90′s Pygmalion teen movies where the girl has glasses + ponytail and then *GASP* does not and *GASP* she’s HOT. This was the BL version.) Meanwhile, writers better be careful with Pi, he’s getting too tsundere to like. Did you see they gave AJ a 2gether music intro & pick up line? Well, it’s actually his brother JJ who plays Ohm in 2g. I cackled. GMMTV - you so cheeky. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai 

HIStory 4: Close To You (Taiwan) Ep 5 - half way point. My poor confused babies. It was a really sweet episode... if what happened before hadn’t happened in the way that it had. Also, these boys have a GREAT friendship but are probably the worst advice givers ever. 

Most Peaceful Place (Vietnam) Ep 3 fin - so cute! Our boys confessed and got together. There was an adorable mutual kiss (I love me a mutual, like Ingredients). Afterwards, they actually seemed to communicate with each other about both sex and their relationship. OMG. How original for BL! This was the last episode, so the series is short, but I still enjoyed it very much. RECOMMENDED. 

My Lascivious Boss (Vietnam) Ep 1-2 - oh boy this one is rough, we started out with homophobia child abuse and moved on to family drama + drunken dub-con one night stand. But production values and subs are better than normal for Vietnam (You Are My Boy levels) + our queer babies are out & proud + it’s higher heat + I’m weak. So I’m watching. 

Word of Honor (China) Ep 25-27 - honestly not much happened, lots of back story. Things are looking dire for the ghosts unless they can turn the Scorpion (I LOVE HIM, he’s my precious deadly baby). Don’t know how they managed to make loosing a battle with an immortal sword god ex-friend cute... but they did. Did some calculations and at 36 eps, mathematically speaking, ep 30 will be the equivalent of a standard BL ep 11. Should I be scared for next week? 

Nobleman Ryu’s Wedding (Korea) Ep 1-2 - it’s so effing adorbs, soft bois do old fashioned tropes like arranged marriage + evil stepsisters meets the more modern fake relationship + secret identity in a surprisingly comfortable mix. It launched with baby is a floppy drunk, forced proximity, performative I saw you feed him, and some fun gay panic. It’s a lot lighter and faster paced than I was expecting, but this is Korea so I don’t know why I’m surprised. 

Stand Alones 

K-pop band OnlyOneOf dropped a new MV that is basically BL bait, using many of the tropes we know and love. I promise I’m not trying to lure anyone into K-pop I just thought it was interesting how consciously they’re yaoi dipping. 

Spin-off We Best Love Fighting Mr. 2nd, Shou Zhen | the Only Love Letter Once Written (SERIOUSLY WITH THE TITLES TAIWAN?) anyway there’s a something or other 25 minutes featuring Pei Shou Yi and his boy that aired Friday. It’s about 10 minutes of reboot footage with 15 min of new content, mostly set in the past. It entirely rests on Chih Tian Shih’s acting, fortunately for us he’s great. However, it doesn’t substantially change or add to these characters’ arcs from the finale of WBL season 2. I don’t know if there will be more or if this was just an extra footage fan service. 

COLOR RUSH GOT ITS MOVIE!!! Okay this is almost the tipping point for me to get Viki Standard. It’s listed at 1:56 minutes long but the original series had only c.120 running time - that is a lot of new content. Although i was disappointed by To My Star’s movie I loved Wish You’s, so I am hoping Color Rush got Wish You level treatment. That said, I feel Color Rush the series is damn near perfect already, hard to improve on perfection.

Close Friend the series got an updated trailer featuring MaxNat (no subs) so if you like them in Y-Destiny or in Why R U get ready for them to play different characters again, this time for a sports romance segment. Like Y-Destiny, Close Friend looks to be another series of vignettes (Original trailer) coming April 22. 

2gether the movie (Thai trailer) was intended release April 22 but is now postponed due to a surge in C19 cases in Thailand.

Tell the World I Love You, a Thai BL movie that was supposed to release last week, is similarly delayed.  

My Ride has been postponed indefinitely with no airing date. 

The Miracle of Teddy Bear got a teaser vid, no eng subs. 

Gossip

Thai BL actors Nanon (Bad Buddy), Yoon (YYY), and Mark Siwat (LBC, Bite Me) have tested positive for C19. Press releases stated they’re fine, tho filming has paused fore their various projects, obvs. (No word on whether Nanon’s current project was Bad Buddy or not, although it seems likely given his recent Arm Share episode.)

One major newspaper reported this month that more than 1,000 investors were sucked in by Singh’s Instagram account, which showed him posing in designer clothes with expensive cars at plush holiday resorts. Those who signed up for his services found that their trading accounts were emptied on Christmas Eve and the FCA has added him to its warning list of unauthorised traders (after the fact, unfortunately). But what the paper doesn’t mention in this particular piece is that Singh’s “success” was first reported on its own website in breathless, no-questions-asked fashion, in November, just a month before it all went horribly wrong.

This aggravates me because, as a genuine trader, I work hard to make profits and I know what it takes. I also don’t like to see people being conned. So I want to unpack this story for you, so that you don’t end up falling for one of these scams or something similar.

How does the binary-options scam work?

There is a reason why so many gentlemen (it’s usually men) in their early 20s now apparently own private jets, luxury cars and slick watches. It just may not be because they’ve cracked the financial markets as they claim. As Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett’s business partner, puts it: “Show me the incentive and I will show you the outcome”. There are many reputable financial-trading firms and brokerages out there. However, many – ones that I would describe as “bucket shops” – are not so reputable. Spread-betting firms typically make their money on the spread (the gap between the buying price and the selling price) and the commission paid by their clients. So their business model does not benefit from losing traders.

However, many brokers know that a losing trader can be very profitable – for them. If you know that 90% of traders will lose all of their money within six months, what do you do? Simply take the other side of the trade. When Johnny Punter buys, the broker sells. And when Johnny Punter wishes to cover his losses, the broker buys and collects the profit.

Unprofitable traders are so profitable for many a bucket shop that they will pay handsome introduction fees for new traders. Therein lies the incentive. It doesn’t matter if you’re actually making any money from your trading – if you can get even a £20 incentive for every trader who signs up with the minimum deposit of a few hundred pounds, then you only need to sign up 1,000 people a month to make £20,000. And the reality is that these brokers aren’t offering just £20 for new clients – they’re offering hundreds. I know they do, because I’ve been offered it.

The Pied Pipers of foreign exchange

If you’re not a successful trader, the next best thing is to fake it. A quick Google search reveals that you can rent a Lamborghini Huracan for four days at a price of £2,500. This is fairly steep – but you can rent a Lamborghini Gallardo for two days for £1,590. Two days is more than enough for a wannabe forex guru to take hundreds of snaps in different outfits, parking in fancy residential estates that they don’t live in and overall giving the impression over several months that they really do own a six-figure supercar. And of course, there are plenty of places to hunt down a cheap, out-of-season stay at a luxurious five-star hotel, where they can do exactly the same. Then they just pop it all on social media and wait for eager punters to line up to sign up with their “exclusive broker”.

Many brokers offer demo accounts, in which case the “guru” can just repeatedly put on ten trades in a row, come out with winners, then screenshot it and post it on Instagram. If even that is too difficult a task, then it’s a simple matter to fake the picture instead using image manipulation software and post that. With “evidence” of their success sorted out, the trader then promotes their wares with promises of “signals” that have 90% success rates, alongside key phrases such as “no risk” and “guaranteed profit”. Most informed investors realize that if a magic money-making machine did exist it would be owned by a private hedge fund, never to see the light of day. So anyone who actually believes that a 20-year-old student could pull this off is ideal bait – inexperienced, naive and potentially desperate.

The scam also succeeds because of how victims feel when they finally realize they’ve been suckered. Most don’t tell anyone because they feel foolish and want to save face. But also, they know (or rapidly learn) that there is very little the police can do. The banning of the sale of binary options was a step in the right direction. But now the traders of Instagram simply give away their “signals” to trade these options for free. And many bucket-shop brokers are overseas – often they’re not even doing anything illegal in the country in which they operate (although equally often the traders in question will imply that the bucket shop is a reputable UK-based and regulated institution, or lie flat out).

There are even operators who will manipulate the punter’s account in order to make them believe they are winning and then call on them to deposit more money. Then, when the client finally wishes to withdraw, the company goes cold and refers them to the small print, in which it says that the client must trade through an impossible amount of money just to be allowed to withdraw. Other brokers allow the affiliate to widen the spread to maximize their own commission and increase losses for their clients. We look at ways to avoid being scammed in the box below, but in short, as always – if it looks too good to be true, it is.

The numbers in the Fibonacci sequence have a life far beyond rabbits and appear in the most unexpected places. In this article we take a closer look at the golden ratio. We discuss its uses and origins other than the Fibonacci sequence.

The Golden Rectangle

Why do we find a certain person more beautiful than another? It seems like a strange question, but it's actually not that strange. There is evidence that we like certain shapes and proportions more than others. We'll keep it simple and use rectangles. There is a certain shape of rectangles whose proportions always appeal to us the most. Of course, the Greeks knew this long before modern psychologists started testing it. That is why they used golden rectangles : rectangles with the best ratio between height and width .

Take a pen, paper and a ruler. Draw the rectangle you like best. Now measure the length of each side and divide the longest length by the shortest. How much do you get out? A number around 1.6 ? It won't be exactly 1.6, but it will be pretty close. Besides being "beautiful," the resulting shape has one surprising feature: if you draw a golden rectangle and then draw a line in it to divide that rectangle into a square and another smaller rectangle, that smaller rectangle is amazing again. another golden rectangle! You can do this again with this new golden rectangle, and you'll get another square and another golden rectangle. The rectangular sides always have the same ratio: the golden ratio, also called phinamed, with a size of 1.618 .

Back to our first question: why do we find a certain person more beautiful than another according to the golden ratio? Some faces fit the golden ratio more than others. So, what is this golden ratio? Well, it's a number equal to about 1.618. This number is now known as "phi". You write it with the symbol for the letter phi from the Greek alphabet. Phi is not exactly equal to 1.618, because phi, like its famous little brother pi, is an irrational number . That means the decimal digits go on forever without repeating a pattern.

As a physics reporter and lover of mathematics, I won’t be celebrating Pi Day this year. That’s because pi is wrong.

I don’t mean that the value is incorrect. Pi, known by the symbol π, is the number you get when you divide a circle’s circumference by its diameter: 3.14159… and so on without end. But, as some mathematicians have argued, the mathematical constant was poorly chosen, and students worldwide continue to suffer as a result.

A longtime fixture of high school math classes, pi has inspired books, art (SN Online: 5/4/06) and enthusiasts who memorize it to tens of thousands of decimal places (SN: 4/7/12, p. 12). But some contend that replacing pi with a different mathematical constant could make trigonometry and other math subjects easier to learn. These critics — including myself — advocate for an arguably more elegant number equal to 2π: 6.28318…. Sometimes known as tau, or the symbol τ, the quantity is equal to a circle’s circumference divided by its radius, not its diameter.

This idea is not new. In 2001, mathematician Bob Palais of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City published an article in the Mathematical Intelligencer titled “ π is wrong!” The topic gained more attention in 2010 with The Tau Manifesto, posted online by author and educator Michael Hartl. But the debate tends to reignite every year on March 14, which is celebrated as Pi Day for its digits: 3/14.

The simplest way to see the failure of pi is to consider angles, which in mathematics are typically measured in radians. Pi is the number of radians in half a circle, not a whole circle. That makes things confusing: For example, the angle at the tip of a slice of pizza — an eighth of a pie — isn’t π/8, but π/4. In contrast, using tau, the pizza-slice angle is simply τ/8. Put another way, tau is the number of radians in a full circle.

That factor of two is a big deal. Trigonometry — the study of the angles and lines found in shapes such as triangles — can be a confusing whirlwind for students, full of blindly plugging numbers into calculators. That’s especially true when it comes to sine and cosine, two important functions in trigonometry. Many trigonometry problems involve calculating the sine or cosine of an angle. When graphed, the two functions look like a series of wiggles, shaped a bit like an “S” on its side, that repeat the same values every 2π. That means pi covers only half of an S. Tau, on the other hand, covers the full wiggle, a more intuitive measure.

Pi has become so embedded in mathematics that it could be hard to excise. A more practical approach may be to introduce tau as a teaching tool alongside pi, rather than a replacement. Education is where tau’s impact is most likely to be felt: Professional scientists and mathematicians can comfortably handle the factors of two that crop up with pi in equations.

You might argue that multiplying by two isn’t that hard, even for students. But it isn’t the arithmetic that concerns me. Trigonometry is notorious for creating a divide between the math-fluent and math-phobic. But helping more people understand and enjoy mathematics isn’t some pie-in-the-sky fantasy. Everyone is capable of doing math. We just need to work smarter, and speak more clearly, to help those who struggle.

The Results

My team, BIG BATE came seventh overall! Not bad. You can see from the graph that we were off to a very slow start, so it was quite worrying at the beginning.

My team consisted of my friends alexpanaman, tsoyuzhu and bryan (who doesn't have tumblr and isn't doing sec this semester). Each of us had different strengths, so that was very useful. Tsoyuzhu focused on the RE challenges, I focused on the forensics and crypto challenges, whilst alexpanaman and bryan focused on the web and misc challenges.

I've decided to write up the solutions on my contributions.

Forensics

Yin

For this challenge, we were given what seems to be a plain white photo. However, when you extract the RGB values of the photo which weren't pure white (0xFFFFFF), the hex values produced spelt the flag.

Yang

Similar to Yin, we were given what seems to be a plain black photo. Once again, to obtain the flag, you must extract the RGB values. However this time, you had to choose the values which weren't pure black (0x000000). The decimal values produced spelt the flag.

Reference Letter

For this one, alexpanaman actually gave me a hint and told me to modify the first chunk of hex values in the file to make it readable, as when it's first downloaded, it's corrupted. The value to change it to was found by finding out the PDF magic number. Once that was done and the file was able to be opened, it was a meme. I had no idea what I was doing but I decided to find a "PDF to JPEG" converted and convert the PDF file. To my surprise, there were two JPEF outputs produced. The first one was just the PDF in JPEG form, and the other was a JPEG of the flag! How this works?... I have no idea.

Cryptography

Rotation

All I did was go to ROT13 and try to see which rotation produced a legible output. I believe it was ROT15. Bryan actually had a crack at this at the very beginning but for some reason, there was no flag when he decoded the ciphertext...

Executive Briefing Center

All I did was look at the source code and the flag was written in plain sight. Unfortunately, I couldn't solve Executive Briefing II...

Penpal

Okay, I didn't solve this one but I do know how to solve it. I just didn't have the tools required. As soon as I saw n, e and c, I instantly knew it was RSA. However, I was unable to find an online calculator capable of finding the primes used to produce n as it was a VERY large number. Alexpanaman solved this one as he found a RSA solver (which was created for CTFs LOL).

Pikachu

I can't believe I listened to the Youtube video linked and tried to find a match between the song and the given text file which was just a variety of "pi pika pikachu". Out of curiosity I just Googled "Pikachu decoder". To my surprise, there was such a thing as "Pikalang" and I was able to decode it just by pasting the ciphertext.

Reflection

Looking back, I realised that I didn't solve that many flags, considering the fact that we had around 8 hours to do them... I hope that there will be another CTF and that my friends will want to participate again so that we can come back better prepared and with better skills!

You could also talk about how there are multiple cryptocurrencies competing to take over from Bitcoin; I know Ether  isn't exactly competing against other cryptocurrencies because they're actually running on it, but it might be worth mentioning. If you want, end your article by saying how investing in Ethereum has made some people rich.HOW CAN I TRADE ETHEREUM?This section can be long if you wish. You could write about the main difference between the Ethereum and Bitcoin trading markets, which is that the former has a less liquid market (buying/selling an asset on exchange  A and then exchanging it for another asset on  exchange  B). You could advise people on which assets to choose first before you start trading on  GDAX,  Kraken  or any other exchange platform. It might also be worth mentioning some general information about exchanges, such as  how they treat transferring your coins elsewhere after you've made some successful trades. Finally, it would make sense to put some caveats here about potential cryptocurrency-related scams like  Ether;the most talked about right now is  BitConnectestafa.HOW CAN I INVEST IN ETHEREUM?This should be another long section, especially since you're explaining to your readers how they can make money from Ether  by trading or keeping it for the long term.
