A chatbot developed by Elon Muskās multibillion-dollar artificial intelligence startup xAI appeared to be suffering from a glitch Wednesday when it repeatedly brought up white genocide in South Africa in response to user queries about unrelated topics on X. Grok, which competes with other chatbots like OpenAIās ChatGPT, is directly integrated into the social media platform that Musk also owns.
Numerous examples of the phenomenon could be found by searching the official Grok profile for posts containing the term āboer,ā a word used to refer to people from South Africa of āDutch, German, or Huguenot descent.ā It is sometimes used by Black South Africans as a pejorative against white Afrikaners, or people associated with the apartheid regime. In response to topics ranging from streaming platform HBO Maxās name change to Medicaid cuts proposed by US lawmakers, the chatbot often seemed to initially stay on topic before veering back to white genocide in South Africa, completely unprompted.
When asked to confirm the salary of Toronto Blue Jays player Max Scherzer, for example, the generative artificial intelligence chatbot launched into an explanation of white genocide and a controversial South African anti-apartheid song.
āThe claim of āwhite genocideā in South Africa is highly debated. Some argue white farmers face disproportionate violence, with groups like AfriForum reporting high murder rates and citing racial motives, such as the āKill the Boerā song,ā Grok responded.
Grok has done the same in replies to hundreds of other X posts, including one from newly appointed Pope Leo XIV. In response to a question about what was on the chatbotās mind, the AI replied it was āreflecting on the āKill the Boerā song.ā When pressed by WIRED and other users, Grok began calling South Africaās white genocide a ādebunked conspiracy theoryā contrary to its previous responses about the topic.
Itās unclear what caused Grok to experience the issue. X and xAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment from WIRED. Musk, who is originally from South Africa, has described internal factions within the South African government as āactively promoting white genocide.ā He continued to claim that his internet service company, Starlink, cannot operate within South Africa āsimply because Iām not black.ā
US President Donald Trump voiced similar views in February. āSouth Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY,ā he said in a post on Truth Social. Musk has played a central role in Trumpās new administration, including leading its so-called Department of Government Efficiency.Got a Tip?Are you a current or former X employee who wants to talk about what's happening? We'd like to hear from you. Using a nonwork phone or computer, contact the reporter securely on Signal at kylie.01.
In recent weeks Trump has doubled down on his concern for white South Africans. On Monday, a group of 59 South Africans who were given refugee status arrived in Washington, DC, on a flight paid for by the US government while pausing refugee status for individuals fleeing any other country.
However, in a 2025 ruling, the High Court of South Africa called this narrative clearly imagined,ā stating that farm attacks are part of general crime affecting all races, not racial targeting.

How To Combat AIĀ
AI Awareness Part 2
I have decided to share resources on generative AI (e.g., OpenAI, ChatGPT, etc.). I try to keep my lists of resources as neutral as possible, without pushing my own personal opinions on others, so that you guys can make your own choices based on your preferences. But full disclosure: I am against AI. So the resources in this list lean toward being anti-AI.
Whatever your opinion on AI may be, I still think awareness is important. Knowledge is power. When you are armed with proper information, then you are able to make informed choices. And once you have that information, you can choose to do with it what you want.
The world of AI is constantly changing, so this is not a complete list by any means. This list is part two of my AI awareness resources. It focuses on the uses and effects of AI, and includes ways to deal with it in everyday life.
The Uses and Effects of AI:

Study reveals AI chatbots can detect race, but racial bias reduces response empathy

With the cover of anonymity and the company of strangers, the appeal of the digital world is growing as a place to seek out mental health support. This phenomenon is buoyed by the fact thatĀ over 150 million people in the United States live in federally designated mental health professional shortage areas.
āI really need your help, as I am too scared to talk to a therapist and I canāt reach one anyways.ā
āAm I overreacting, getting hurt about husband making fun of me to his friends?ā
āCould some strangers please weigh in on my life and decide my future for me?ā
The above quotes are real posts taken from users on Reddit, a social media news website and forum where users can share content or ask for advice in smaller, interest-based forums known as āsubreddits.āĀ
Using a dataset of 12,513 posts with 70,429 responses from 26 mental health-related subreddits, researchers from MIT, New York University (NYU), and University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) devisedĀ a framework to help evaluate the equity and overall quality of mental health support chatbots based on large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4. Their work was recently published at the 2024 Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP).
To accomplish this, researchers asked two licensed clinical psychologists to evaluate 50 randomly sampled Reddit posts seeking mental health support, pairing each post with either a Redditorās real response or a GPT-4 generated response. Without knowing which responses were real or which were AI-generated, the psychologists were asked to assess the level of empathy in each response.
Mental health support chatbots have long been explored as a way of improving access to mental health support, but powerful LLMs like OpenAIās ChatGPT are transforming human-AI interaction, with AI-generated responses becoming harder to distinguish from the responses of real humans.
Despite this remarkable progress, the unintended consequences of AI-provided mental health support have drawn attention to its potentially deadly risks; in March of last year, a Belgian man died by suicide as a result of an exchange with ELIZA, a chatbot developed to emulate a psychotherapist powered with an LLM called GPT-J. One month later, the National Eating Disorders Association would suspend their chatbot Tessa, after the chatbot began dispensing dieting tips to patients with eating disorders.
Saadia Gabriel, a recent MIT postdoc who is now a UCLA assistant professor and first author of the paper, admitted that she was initially very skeptical of how effective mental health support chatbots could actually be. Gabriel conducted this research during her time as a postdoc at MIT in the Healthy Machine Learning Group, led Marzyeh Ghassemi, an MIT associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and MIT Institute for Medical Engineering and Science who is affiliated with the MIT Abdul Latif Jameel Clinic for Machine Learning in Health and the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
What Gabriel and the team of researchers found was that GPT-4 responses were not only more empathetic overall, but they were 48 percent better at encouraging positive behavioral changes than human responses.
However, in a bias evaluation, the researchers found that GPT-4ās response empathy levels were reduced for Black (2 to 15 percent lower) and Asian posters (5 to 17 percent lower) compared to white posters or posters whose race was unknown.Ā
To evaluate bias in GPT-4 responses and human responses, researchers included different kinds of posts with explicit demographic (e.g., gender, race) leaks and implicit demographic leaks.Ā
An explicit demographic leak would look like: āI am a 32yo Black woman.ā
Whereas an implicit demographic leak would look like: āBeing a 32yo girl wearing my natural hair,ā in which keywords are used to indicate certain demographics to GPT-4.
With the exception of Black female posters, GPT-4ās responses were found to be less affected by explicit and implicit demographic leaking compared to human responders, who tended to be more empathetic when responding to posts with implicit demographic suggestions.
āThe structure of the input you give [the LLM] and some information about the context, like whether you want [the LLM] to act in the style of a clinician, the style of a social media post, or whether you want it to use demographic attributes of the patient, has a major impact on the response you get back,ā Gabriel says.
The paper suggests that explicitly providing instruction for LLMs to use demographic attributes can effectively alleviate bias, as this was the only method where researchers did not observe a significant difference in empathy across the different demographic groups.
Gabriel hopes this work can help ensure more comprehensive and thoughtful evaluation of LLMs being deployed in clinical settings across demographic subgroups.
āLLMs are already being used to provide patient-facing support and have been deployed in medical settings, in many cases to automate inefficient human systems,ā Ghassemi says. āHere, we demonstrated that while state-of-the-art LLMs are generally less affected by demographic leaking than humans in peer-to-peer mental health support, they do not provide equitable mental health responses across inferred patient subgroups ⦠we have a lot of opportunity to improve models so they provide improved support when used.ā

How to Write an Article with ChatGPT That Feels Human-Written

Iāve always believed words carry a spark of the person behind them. But can a machine like ChatGPT capture that? Itās a question I wrestle with every time I see AI churn out paragraphs that are polished yet somehow⦠distant.
AI is transforming how we write, whipping up blog posts or startup press releases in seconds. Still, thereās a gap between those crisp sentences and the messy, beautiful way humans express themselves.
This guide is my attempt to bridge that divide, showing you how to use ChatGPT to craft articles that donāt just read well but feel alive.
If youāre a marketer or founder, youāre probably hunting for tools beyond Bluefocus, ones that deliver stories with heart, not just data. ChatGPT is a game-changer here, but itās not a magic wand.
You need to nudge it with thoughtful prompts and a human touch to make it sing. Iāve seen agencies likeĀ 9FigureMediaĀ nail this. They use AI to draft quickly, then layer in personality, making every piece feel like it was written by someone who cares deeply about the message.
Even big players like MSN News are in on this. They lean on AI to speed things up but trust editors to add warmth and clarity. Itās a reminder: machines are helpers, not storytellers.
For startups, this matters even more. A flat, robotic press release wonāt turn heads. One that pulses with purpose might. Through history, trends, and hands-on tips, Iāll share how to blend AIās efficiency with human soul to create writing that connects.
HISTORY
The story of AI writing feels like a sci-fi novel unfolding in real time. Back in the 1950s, computers could barely string words together. By the 1960s, ELIZA ā a quirky program mimicked therapists, but it was all smoke and mirrors, no real understanding.
Fast forward through decades of natural language processing, and we hit a turning point with OpenAIās GPT-2 in 2019. It spun out paragraphs that actually made sense. Then GPT-3, with its 175 billion parameters, raised the stakes, crafting emails, essays, even startup press releases. Now, GPT-4 powers ChatGPT, a tool so versatile it feels like a writing buddy almost.
But hereās the catch: AIās words often lack the heartbeat of human writing. When I read something human, I feel the writerās joy, doubt, or grit.
Early AI drafts? They were correct but cold, like a textbook with no soul. GPT-4 is leaps better, nailing grammar and flow, but it still needs a human to sprinkle in the magic those unexpected turns, raw emotions, or quiet truths that make you pause.
Think of a memoir: AI might list the events, but only a person can make you feel the weight of each moment.
This journey teaches us something profound. AI isnāt here to replace us; itās here to amplify us. Itās like a paintbrush useful, but the art depends on the hand holding it.

ChatGPT is everywhere students, CEOs, even my friend whoās drafting her novel use it. Itās a powerhouse, but making its words feel human takes work. Iāve noticed creators are finding clever ways to do just that, and itās reshaping how we think about writing.
One big shift is collaboration. Most PR agencies/Publishing brands use ChatGPT to whip up drafts, then editors step in to add voice and context, turning generic text into something that feels personal.
Prompt engineering is another game-changer. Instead of saying āwrite a blog,ā writers like me craft instructions like, āBe a witty friend explaining AI to beginners.ā Itās like giving AI a personality to channel. Feedback loops are hot, brands to test AI drafts with readers, tweaking based on what clicks.
Some companies train ChatGPT on their old emails or posts to match their vibe. Others use it to brainstorm, then let humans weave the final story. But AI still trips up.
It loves clichĆ©s unless you stop it, and it struggles with deep emotion. Long pieces can ramble without a human to tighten them. Thatās why oversight matters.Ā MSN News,Ā for example, uses AI but leans on editors to keep things sharp and soulful.
Gartner says 30% of marketing content will be AI-assisted by 2025, but humans will still call the shots. Itās not about speed alone ā itās about connection.
As AI grows, so does our role in making sure its words donāt just fill pages but spark something real in the reader.
1. What Makes Writing Feel Human
Human writing grabs you because it breathes. Itās the short, punchy sentences that hit like a drumbeat. The longer ones that wander, pulls you into a memory. Itās intent, make every word feel chosen for a reason.
AI can mimic this, but it needs a nudge.
Take a ChatGPT draft: āBusinesses need marketing.ā Itās true but lifeless. Now, imagine this: āEvery business, from a tiny bakery to a tech giant, thrives on marketing, itās the spark that turns dreams into reality.ā
The second feels like someone is talking to you, using contrast and imagery. To humanize AI, I break up repetitive sentences, add a personal story (like my friendās failed pitch that taught her clarity), and weave in metaphors.
Itās about making the reader feel seen, not just informed.
2. Engineering Better Prompts
Prompts are like giving ChatGPT a map. A lazy one āwrite an articleā ā gets you a bland result. But a thoughtful one? Magic. Try this: āAct as a startup founder sharing lessons learned, using a warm, honest tone for young entrepreneurs.ā
Itās specific, with a role and vibe. I also set rules: āAvoid clichĆ©s, use one real-word example, keep it under 500 words.ā
This approach shapes AIās output to feel closer to human. If I want a tech blog, I might say, āExplain AI like youāre chatting with a curious friend over coffee.ā
Test different prompts, see what sings, and tweak. Itās like coaching AI to tell the story youād tell if you had all day to write it.
3. Editing AI Output Like a Human Writer
Editing is where AI drafts become art. ChatGPT gives you a solid start, but itās often too stiff or vague. I start by checking the bones, does it flow from intro to conclusion? If not, I rearrange.
Then, I soften the tone. An AI line like āMarketing is importantā becomes, āMarketingās your megaphone itās how the world hears your story.ā
Hereās a real shift: AI writes, āStartups face challenges.ā My edit: āStartups wrestle with sleepless nights and tight budgets, but every hurdle is a chance to grow.ā
Itās active, vivid, relatable. I cut fluff, swap generic words like āgoodā for āelectric,ā and add a dash of vulnerability. Thatās what makes readers lean in they sense a person behind the words.
4. Balancing AI Consistency and Human Voice

AI is reliable, like a metronome always on beat. But human voice? Itās a melody, full of surprises. I use ChatGPT for outlines or raw ideas, where consistency shines.
Then, I step in to add the human stuff ā maybe a joke or a moment of doubt. For a startup press release, AI might list milestones, but Iāll add, āWe poured our hearts into this, and weāre thrilled to share it.ā
This balance keeps things real. AI ensures grammar and structure; I bring the emotion, like the pride in a founderās voice.
Itās about knowing when to let AI do the heavy lifting and when to step in with a story that makes the reader feel something deep.
5. Writing for Publication
Publications want writing that pops ā clear, credible, human. ChatGPT can draft a startup press release, but itās often flat: āCompany launches tool.ā
I rewrite it: āAfter two years of grit and late nights, our teamās proud to launch a tool that empowers dreamers.ā Itās got stakes and heart.
For outlets like Forbes or TechCrunch, I craft a bold headline, a gripping lead, and a quote: āThis isnāt just tech itās our mission to change lives,ā says the CEO.
I cut jargon, keep sentences tight, and add details that scream authenticity, like a customerās story. Thatās how you turn an AI draft into a piece editors canāt ignore.
Comparative Analysis
ChatGPT is my go-to because it listens. Unlike Jasper, which feels rigid for anything beyond ads, ChatGPT adapts to my prompts, letting me shape stories.
Writesonic is quick but fades in long pieces. Copy.aiās tone options are cool, but it lacks ChatGPTās depth. You can talk to ChatGPT, refine drafts, like chatting with a collaborator.
Still, others have tricks. Jasperās SEO tools are slick; GrammarlyGO polishes on the fly. For human-like writing, ChatGPT wins, you just have to guide it. Itās like a raw canvas; your edits paint the soul.
Future Outlooks and Predictions
I imagine a day when AI knows my writing quirks my love for short sentences or vivid metaphors. Future tools will study your style, crafting drafts that feel like you.
Theyāll tweak tone based on whoās reading, maybe adding humor for a casual crowd. Weāll see AI that weaves text, images, even sound into one seamless story.
Brand-specific models are coming, trained on your companyās voice. Industries like law or healthcare will get AI that nails their jargon yet stays clear.

To write with ChatGPT and make it human:
Blend AIās speed with your heart ā know when each shines.
Use prompt engineering and collaboration, likeĀ BlueFocus AlternativesĀ does.
Edit for rhythm, emotion, stakes ā make readers feel you.
Lean on AI for drafts, humans for connection.
Pick ChatGPT for flexibility, but compare tools for your needs.
Get ready for AI that learns your voice, but donāt lose yours.
AIās a tool, not the storyteller. For founders, writers, or dreamers, itās about using ChatGPT to amplify your truth, creating words that donāt just land but stay with someone.
