I have a lot to say about AI in higher Ed (librarian, though I work with the humanities) but I’m so burnt out on people talking about it (this webinar! This thinkpiece! This new tool! We had an ai retreat/round table for work that ndjdknbjxknr) that I started writing something coherent and it devolved into a seething keysmash into the void

#I am SO SICK of hearing about ai lol#we had to do an ai retreat recently to be “””informed”””of new ai tools students or faculty might use/want to know about#our academic integrity violations have something like doubled since students started using chatgpt#also !!! don’t put in a source you haven’t actually read !!! that’s a pet peeve#I need a library tag#genuinely tho some students prefer something with which they can use natural language

Turnitin's AI/GAIT detection tool is notoriously inaccurate. My institution opted to turn it off because it was causing so much panic with false positives.
An important message to college students: Why you shouldn't use ChatGPT or other "AI" to write papers.
Here's the thing: Unlike plagiarism, where I can always find the exact source a student used, it's difficult to impossible to prove that a student used ChatGPT to write their paper. Which means I have to grade it as though the student wrote it.
So if your professor can't prove it, why shouldn't you use it?
Well, first off, it doesn't write good papers. Grading them as if the student did write it themself, so far I've given GPT-enhanced papers two Ds and an F.
If you're unlucky enough to get a professor like me, they've designed their assignments to be hard to plagiarize, which means they'll also be hard to get "AI" to write well. To get a good paper out of ChatGPT for my class, you'd have to write a prompt that's so long, with so many specifics, that you might as well just write the paper yourself.
ChatGPT absolutely loves to make broad, vague statements about, for example, what topics a book covers. Sadly for my students, I ask for specific examples from the book, and it's not so good at that. Nor is it good at explaining exactly why that example is connected to a concept from class. To get a good paper out of it, you'd have to have already identified the concepts you want to discuss and the relevant examples, and quite honestly if you can do that it'll be easier to write your own paper than to coax ChatGPT to write a decent paper.
The second reason you shouldn't do it?
IT WILL PUT YOUR PROFESSOR IN A REALLY FUCKING BAD MOOD. WHEN I'M IN A BAD MOOD I AM NOT GOING TO BE GENEROUS WITH MY GRADING.
I can't prove it's written by ChatGPT, but I can tell. It does not write like a college freshman. It writes like a professional copywriter churning out articles for a content farm. And much like a large language model, the more papers written by it I see, the better I get at identifying it, because it turns out there are certain phrases it really, really likes using.
Once I think you're using ChatGPT I will be extremely annoyed while I grade your paper. I will grade it as if you wrote it, but I will not grade it generously. I will not give you the benefit of the doubt if I'm not sure whether you understood a concept or not. I will not squint and try to understand how you thought two things are connected that I do not think are connected.
Moreover, I will continue to not feel generous when calculating your final grade for the class. Usually, if someone has been coming to class regularly all semester, turned things in on time, etc, then I might be willing to give them a tiny bit of help - round a 79.3% up to a B-, say. If you get a 79.3%, you will get your C+ and you'd better be thankful for it, because if you try to complain or claim you weren't using AI, I'll be letting the college's academic disciplinary committee decide what grade you should get.
Eventually my school will probably write actual guidelines for me to follow when I suspect use of AI, but for now, it's the wild west and it is in your best interest to avoid a showdown with me.
#obviously the plagiarism tool is way better#gaits#academic integrity#chatgpt#seriously stop submitting crappy essays written by chatgpt and start submitting crappy essays written by you#if you can't write something perfect then hey neither can the spicy autocorrect#but at least you have a decent chance of including the specific things your teacher wants to see#so a decent rubric should still net you some marks

AI for Research: My Ultimate Research Assistant
Is there really any benefit to using AI for creative research? I’m going to tell you the answer up front. Yes, a million times, yes! Writing research does not live up to the fantasy. It’s the part of writing I used to view as ‘living the dream’. The thought of visiting Paris and sipping on a cafe au lait as I soaked up the city’s vibes was how I’d envisioned it. But the reality isn’t anything…

Integration Testing vs. End-to-End Testing: A Closer Look with Keploy
Introduction
In the fast-paced world of software development, ensuring the quality and reliability of your applications is of paramount importance. Two crucial types of testing that often come into play are integration e2e testing. Both serve distinct purposes in the software testing process, each with its own set of benefits and use cases. In this article, we'll explore the key differences between integration testing and E2E testing and how Keploy, your trusted testing tool, can help you navigate these essential testing processes.
Integration Testing: Ensuring Component Harmony
Integration testing is all about evaluating how different components within your application interact with one another. These components can range from individual functions or modules to larger, more complex services. The primary goal of integration testing is to ensure that these integrated components work seamlessly together, even when they come from different sources or teams.
Key Features of Integration Testing:
Focus on Interaction: Integration tests focus on the interactions between various components. It's all about verifying that the parts fit together like a well-oiled machine.
Early Detection: Integration testing is often performed as soon as individual components are ready. This early detection of issues can save a lot of time and resources down the development pipeline.
Fast Feedback Loop: It provides developers with quick feedback on the compatibility of their code with other components.
Isolation: Tests are typically isolated to specific interfaces, APIs, or interactions, ensuring that issues are localized and easier to identify.
Keploy's Role in Integration Testing:
Keploy provides a robust suite of tools for integration testing. With Keploy, you can easily set up and execute tests that validate how various components interact within your application. It supports multiple programming languages, allowing you to write integration tests that ensure your components communicate flawlessly, all with a user-friendly interface for quick and efficient testing.
End-to-End Testing: User Experience Validation
End-to-End testing takes a more comprehensive approach. Rather than focusing solely on the interaction of components, it simulates the entire user journey through an application. E2E testing is vital for ensuring that the application functions correctly from start to finish and delivers an optimal user experience.
Key Features of End-to-End Testing:
User-Centric: E2E tests mimic real user interactions, providing a holistic view of the application's functionality.
Real Scenarios: These tests simulate real-world scenarios, ensuring that the application performs as expected under actual usage conditions.
UI Testing: E2E tests often include user interface (UI) testing, which checks the application's appearance and usability.
Complex Scenarios: End-to-End testing can uncover issues in complex user journeys that may not be apparent in isolation.
Keploy's Role in End-to-End Testing:
Keploy empowers you to streamline your E2E testing efforts. With Keploy's user-friendly testing framework, you can easily set up and execute tests that cover the entire user journey within your application. Keploy's comprehensive testing capabilities enable you to identify issues related to UI/UX, user flow, and overall application behavior.
Choosing the Right Approach
The choice between integration testing and E2E testing depends on your specific testing needs and objectives. Integration testing is ideal for ensuring the harmony of components in your application, while E2E testing is crucial for validating the user experience. In many cases, a balanced approach that combines both testing types can provide the most comprehensive coverage.
Conclusion
In the world of software testing, integration testing and end-to-end testing each play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and reliability of your applications. Keploy, your trusted testing tool, offers the flexibility and functionality you need to seamlessly integrate these two testing approaches into your development process. By leveraging Keploy's capabilities, you can validate the harmony of your application's components through integration testing and ensure an exceptional user experience with end-to-end testing, all while saving time and resources in the software development journey.

Our Stance On Gen-AI
This year, for the first time, we've had a couple of reports from bidders that the FTH fanworks they received were produced using generative AI. For that reason, we've decided that it's important that we lay out a specific, concrete policy going forward.
Generative AI tools are not welcome here.
Non-exhaustive list of examples:
image generators like Imagen, Midjourney, and similar
video generators like Sora, Runway, and similar
LLMs like ChatGPT and similar
audio generators like ElevenLabs, MusicLM, and similar
Participants found to have used generative AI to produce a fanwork, in part or in whole, for their bidder(s) will be permanently banned from participating in future iterations of Fandom Trumps Hate.
Why?
We understand that there can be contentious debate around the use of generative AI, we know individual people have their own reasons for being in favor of it, and we recognize that many people may simply be unaware that these tools come with any negative impacts at all. Regardless, we are firm in our stance on this for the following (non-exhaustive) list of key reasons in no particular order:
negative, unregulated environmental impact
Over the years, you may have noticed that we’ve supported multiple environmental organizations doing important work to combat climate change, preserve wildlife, and advocate for renewable and sustainable energy policy changes. Generative AI tools produce a startling amount of e-waste, can require massive amounts of storage space and computational power, and are a (currently unregulated) drain on natural resources. Using these tools to produce a fanwork flies in the face of every environmental organization we have supported to date.
plagiarism and lack of artistic integrity
Most if not all generative AI models are trained on some amount of stolen work (across various mediums). As a result, any output generated by these models is at worst plagiarized and at best extremely derivative and unoriginal. In our opinion, using generative AI tools to produce a fanwork demonstrates a lack of care for your own craft, a lack of respect for the work of other creators, and a lack of respect for your bidder and your commitment to them.
undermining our community building impact
One of the best things to come out of the auction every year—we can't even call it a side benefit, because it's so central to us—is that bidders and creators form collaborative relationships which sometimes even turn into friendship. Using generative AI undermines that trust and collaboration.
undermining the value of participating as a creator
Bidders participate in Fandom Trumps Hate for the opportunity to prompt YOU to create a fanwork for them, in YOUR style with YOUR specific skill set. Any potential bidder is perfectly capable of dropping a prompt into a generative AI tool on their own time, if they wish. We hope all creators sign up with the aim to play a role more significant than “unnecessary middleman.”
In general, we try to be as flexible as we can in our policies to allow for the best experience possible for all Fandom Trumps Hate participants. This, however, is something we are not willing to be flexible on. We realize this may seem unusually rigid, but we ask that you trust we have given this serious consideration and respect that while we are willing to answer clarifying questions, we are not open to debate on this topic.

genuinely curious but I don't know how to phrase this in a way that sounds less accusatory so please know I'm asking in good faith and am just bad at words
what are your thoughts on the environmental impact of generative ai? do you think the cost for all the cooling system is worth the tasks generative ai performs? I've been wrangling this because while I feel like I can justify it as smaller scales, that would mean it isn't a publicly available tool which I also feel uncomfortable with
the environmental impacts of genAI are almost always one of three things, both by their detractors and their boosters:
vastly overstated
stated correctly, but with a deceptive lack of context (ie, giving numbers in watt-hours, or amount of water 'used' for cooling, without necessary context like what comparable services use or what actually happens to that water)
assumed to be on track to grow constantly as genAI sees universal adoption across every industry
like, when water is used to cool a datacenter, that datacenter isn't just "a big building running chatgpt" -- datacenters are the backbone of the modern internet. now, i mean, all that said, the basic question here: no, i don't think it's a good tradeoff to be burning fossil fuels to power the magic 8ball. but asking that question in a vacuum (imo) elides a lot of the realities of power consumption in the global north by exceptionalizing genAI as opposed to, for example, video streaming, or online games. or, for that matter, for any number of other things.
so to me a lot of this stuff seems like very selective outrage in most cases, people working backwards from all the twitter artists on their dashboard hating midjourney to find an ethical reason why it is irredeemably evil.
& in the best, good-faith cases, it's taking at face value the claims of genAI companies and datacenter owners that the power usage will continue spiralling as the technology is integrated into every aspect of our lives. but to be blunt, i think it's a little naive to take these estimates seriously: these companies rely on their stock prices remaining high and attractive to investors, so they have enormous financial incentives not only to lie but to make financial decisions as if the universal adoption boom is just around the corner at all times. but there's no actual business plan! these companies are burning gigantic piles of money every day, because this is a bubble
so tldr: i don't think most things fossil fuels are burned for are 'worth it', but the response to that is a comprehensive climate politics and not an individualistic 'carbon footprint' approach, certainly not one that chooses chatgpt as its battleground. genAI uses a lot of power but at a rate currently comparable to other massively popular digital leisure products like fortnite or netflix -- forecasts of it massively increasing by several orders of magnitude are in my opinion unfounded and can mostly be traced back to people who have a direct financial stake in this being the case because their business model is an obvious boondoggle otherwise.
