lucanis is a 'I could sit in our quiet kitchen on a grey tuesday afternoon drinking coffee and talking with you about nothing much in particular forever and be the happiest man who ever lived' romantic, not a 'classic tropes and grand gestures' romantic. this is a distinction and conceptual gap I personally feel is crucial to understanding what's going on with him when romanced. for all his almost painful sincerity and clear depth of feeling he's not a very effusive guy by nature, but in the history of time no one has ever, with their whole soul, chest and being, been so genuinely and openly happy to just do laundry and taxes with you.

#danny phantom #text #controversial opinion ahead but...#i think the reason i don't vibe with certain takes on Dani is because a lot of them are like #''yeah she's her own unique person and going by a different name and is definitely not Danny <3''#but then they make her LIVE with him. like??? how is she her own person when she's living exactly the same life as the guy she's based on?#living in the same house with the same parents and the same older sister and the same school and the same town and the same powers??#you could argue that siblings are their own people despite sharing all of those things BUT THEY'RE NOT SIBLINGS. she is his CLONE.#there is inherent thematic baggage there that wouldn't be a factor in a mere sibling dynamic!#i feel like Dani would find it unbelievably stifling and I think it's high key the worst thing that could happen to her character.#even more than being fridged and homeless. because at least then you could fill in those blanks with anything more interesting.#She's at her most effective when she is able to stand on the other side of the fence and mirror Danny.#what makes her fascinating to me is her potential role as a foil. Her similarities to Danny are interesting only when they're #in a different context. mmm throwaway conversation between Dan and Danny that popped into my head that I had to write out:

"You spent ten years being a one-man mass extinction event, then went back in time and fought me, and lost." Danny snarls, arms crossed and throat tight. His mouth pulls back to bare dagger-sharp teeth, and his eyes burn with the familiar thrum of ectoplasm heating up behind his eyes. "If I didn't believe you were half of Vlad before, I do now."

His other self -- and really, can he even call him that? He's half of Vlad too. Two halves severed from each other and welded together to make a new whole, -- snaps his head over to him. Wild-eyed and furious, he looks unlike the man Danny fought before, the one unruffled and untouched, unbothered by the world around him. It's familiar, but not like the way a reflection is.

"What's that supposed to mean." The Other hisses, matching Danny's scowl one-for-one with fangs much bigger and sharper than his.

But there's a reason lions fear hyenas. Danny matches the rumble in The Other's chest with one of his own, and shoves his face close to his. "I don't lose."
