running my first lancer campaign any tips from The lancer werewolf?
Remember, above all, that you are attempting to give your players a good time, and challenge them only as much as they wish to be challenged. You are not here to win battles against them. You are here to make winning fun for them.
Enemies always have access to Lock On and Invade, regardless of their class. NPC Invade only inflicts Impaired and 2 Heat, but Impaired can be devastating if a player relies on accuracy, and they're already at Heat Cap...
If you have a player that's always zipping and zooping about using mobility tools, the Barricade has a gun that automatically Slows on hit.
The Archer has an optional called Impending Threat that can be triggered in response to any action a player takes other than standard movement. It forces the player to either abandon the action or let the Archer attack them as a reaction. The Archer gets +1 Accuracy on all reaction attacks.
Players with high Armor can be intimidating, but remember they're Armor is most useful against repeated small amounts of chip damage, but not to concentrated bursts of alpha strike damage.
Find synergies between NPC classes. For instance: the Seeder can lay mines that a Rainmaker can blap players into with Knockback.
Out of combat:
Your players will appreciate a cast of unique and interesting characters who they can interact with. In my experience, Lancer players like to feel like they're fighting to defend something concrete and tangible. Sure, it's great to fight for world liberation or to end a tyrannical regime, but those are huge, nebulous concepts. However, if you threaten Mama Patalung, the nice old lady who runs their favourite noodle stand and gives them extra jalapeno in their pho, they will tear down the heavens to rescue her.
Have interesting locales they can hang out when they're not in mechs. Curious players will appreciate being able to poke around and investigate things out about your setting.
If a PC has a cool idea that doesn't quite fit with the setting, say yes anyway and try to make it work. Some of the best experiences I've ever had as a GM were spurred by my players' creativity.
Hope this helps.

✦ Lost in Limbo Devlog #12 | 06.09.24
And it's time! 💜 Another month, another devlog, and this one comes with great news!
First of all, we FINALLY settled everything with our studio's bank account, which means we can start sending the necessary documentation to Steam so the demo can be approved. Beta testing has almost ended and all that's left is a bit more of anxious revisions and getting the paperwork together.
We will announce the demo release date very very soon; as soon as we can announce our Steam page! We are hoping that can be settled this upcoming week, but let's see what happens. As the finishing line approaches, we have less to show mainly because we are saving some juicy things for our Kickstarter Pre-Release, so bear with us for a minute! ; v ;
Also, let's be real—paperwork is boring. No one wants to read about me fist-fighting Steam or the Spanish government.
So let's jump into it! 💜
PD: I have a lot of asks left to reply to, so let me apologize for being a bit on the slower side! T_T

This month, for mermay, we got a wonderful shrimp prince! 🧡
Seriously, though; he's supposed to be a lionfish, but the shrimp joke was too funny. Just look at this shrimpy beauty! 🦐
When it comes to the sprites, Raquel wants to add some touches to a few expressions, but she's now focusing on getting our merch art ready. We are so so excited to be able to show it! :')
🎉🎉All the backgrounds have been finished!🎉🎉
Well, all the assets have been finished, should I say! Everything is animated, programmed, and ready to go.
Programming wise, the beta testing process has been going great. Special thanks to Allie, our editor, and Lem (@crescencestudio) for offering their help in beta testing the demo! Also, A.J, Narjs, and Ela, our other beta testers that have given us invaluable feedback! 💜 I think we are almost finished; we are still waiting for one of our VAs to deliver their lines, and I want to give another round of testing to the mac version of the game.
The mobile version will most likely come later than the PC one, as it's stated in our masterpost! 💜 I'll start working on it as soon as the remaining voicelines are incorporated and the betatesting for the PC version is completely finished.
This month we started to reveal our amazing cast! 💜 So far you've met Amon (Brian Vaughn), Envy (Aaron Moy), Xal (Francfil Pontañeles) and our Mysterious Seer (Callum Sanders). Everyone has been wonderful to work with, and we can't wait for you to meet them all in game!
We are also starting work on our teaser trailer; if we are lucky, we'll be able to work with a wonderful artist!
We are sorry this devlog is a bit on the boring side—what's left for us is deal with the hell that is founding a studio and publishing a game. Taxes, build distributions, taxes, taxes, paperwork, reading lots of scary stuff...At the end of the day, we are just four little cryptids trying to stay afloat. I'm very proud of how far we've come, but now that things are getting very serious, I can't help but to shake in my boots a little! T^T
Our demo release date announcement is very, very close. We haven't said anything about it yet because we want to be certain everything is in order and as perfect as possible for the release. We know that's impossible (I mean, being first-timers, stuff is prone to happen), but we want to work as hard as we can to avoid oopsies.
And that's it, folks! We hope we can keep coming at you with good news, and we are very excited (and terrified) of what's to come. Thank you so so much for your support, for sending us asks, for your lovely comments, and for being interested in our game.
As always, please take care, stay hydrated and healthy, remember to eat and take breaks, and make sure to give yourself some love today! 💜

jynx absolutely fascinates me as a game dev because they're like. inspiration but in the opposite way of literally everything they've ever done
jynx decided they want to make touhou-like shmups, and decided to approach this by building most patterns around extremely fast bullets relying entirely on player reaction or having already seen a pattern before, infamously the most disliked and player-antagonistic way of approaching bullet hells
jynx added a great iteration on touhou-like shmups with flash bombing, an infinitely regenerating way to clear bullets if you put yourself in active danger in contrast to the use of bombs as a safe but finite resource, and then made sure you could only use it if you aren't focusing your shots, which you spend over 90% of a touhou-like doing
jynx created "absurdly extra" stages just as a complete fuck you to the player. half of them are humanly impossible to complete
jynx's version of character development is to add more characters. jynx will drop one of the most fascinating backstories you've ever heard that has groundbreaking and sweeping impacts on len'en lore, yet somehow being entirely consistent with it, and then proceed to do literally nothing and minutes later introduce another character with one of the most fascinating backstories you've ever heard. len'en has 40+ characters and all of them have been in perpetual Big Things Are Coming hell for over half a decade
jynx has spent over an alledged 15 years working on the world and lore in mugenri and the outside world, desperately wants to share this and continually mentions the short stories and lore dumps they write, which we never see, because they have somehow convinced themself the only way to show this story is through touhou-likes, which are notable for showing "story" as an excuse for people to shoot bullets at each other
jynx treats feature creep like an arms race. there isn't a single idea they come up with that doesn't end up in a game or is planned to at a later date. len'en 4 is still technically unfinished despite it having enough paths to dwarf all the previous len'en games combined thrice over and featuring the entire cast of the series in it (i will stress again, 40+ characters), and they've promised a dlc with even more stuff to do
jynx wanted to make a mobile cafe management simulator after having made nothing but bullet hell shmups on pc, just because it sounded fun, realised their previous tools couldn't make mobile games well, realised they'd be going in entirely blind on a new tech stack, realised they'd be going in blind on a genre they have no experience with, decided to tag on a second entire game to the cafe management with a turn-based rpg, realised they also have no experience with that genre, continued anyway, learnt how to use unity from the ground up, realised the multitude of issues unity development brings, decided every single character also needed to be in this one with unique boss battles, realised the problems of having 40+ character assets and 5min+ music themes in a mobile game that very infamously is a platform you need to stick to strict asset and tech limitations, decided to stream in assets from a server, made it a live service game because it would be online and that was an obvious next step, stuck through it, totalling in five years of dev time to make a full "gacha" game that is generous beyond belief and makes them a net zero in ad revenue vs server costs
jynx iterates nothing. literally everything you see in their games is the first go and if it sucks, too bad
jynx creates all their music with default fl studio sounds and the touhou trumpet. everything's unmixed. they earnestly believe that loud = better
jynx, allegedly, "blacks out" when making music after hitting some kind of flow state, and wakes up with a complete track. like everything else, these are never iterated on
jynx wrote the entirety of len'en 4's 100,000+ word script in one week. i don't even have a funny comment for this one
jynx doesn't think len'en would fit the format of a visual novel despite the fact len'en 4 has a 100,000+ word script
jynx refuses to collab with anyone for any reason. motives unclear
jynx did three 12 hour back-to-back livestreams crunching to finish book of the cafe. literally no part of this is a good idea
jynx is like the quintessential representation of everything you shouldn't do as a game dev. they should have burnt out years ago and been remembered as nothing but a random quirky touhou ripoff that was an interesting yet janky interpretation but ultimately went nowhere and YET here we are coming in to len'ens decade anniversary
how the fuck is jynx a real person. why am i so obsessed with everything they've ever made
#txt#len'en#this started as like 2 sentences then ballooned#i have many thoughts about jynx as a dev

hi i just came from ao3 and firstly, i have read ur vaultghoul fic probably 20 times already it’s just so good with spot on characterization and amazing writing, thank u so much 🙏
secondly, i was reading the comments on it and came across one abt wanting to see a pre-war au where cooper and lucy start an affair and immediately my ears perked up like 👀 all i could imagine is her being cast as his love interest, her being a big fan of his already, and them having a wedding scene where they fuck in her wedding dress after they call cut
n e way so sorry for rambling haha but unfortunately ive got the brainrot now
I MEAN HYPOTHETICALLY -- I'm mobile (and somehow wrote 2k words still wheeze) so I'll finish this when I'm on my PC but I played around with the idea a bit thanks to this ask. :)
...
Summary; Cooper Howard x Lucy MacLean, 2077 AU where Lucy and Cooper star in a movie together.
...
There's a whole host of ways that Vault-Tec could have cracked down on Cooper. Given the infringement of their security protocols and the divorce and the way they choked him out of all the good roles...
It wasn't such a far stretch that he'd have to take place in the biggest circle jerk of a film production where his super-fan shoved his daughter into a starring role using Cooper's connections.
Because, so far as the public knew, he was still a supporter of Vault-Tec and he'd do just about anything to sell that delusion.
Cooper crushed the heel of his palms against his eyes, a limp cigarette hung between his teeth.
The girl was a nightmare.
Stiff, picky, absent-minded. No emotion, either, no semblance of self-awareness. It was like some Disney Princess popped out of the cartoons in the worst way, quick to parrot the lines she was meant to say with perfect diction but nothing more than that.
And it was somehow his fucking job to coach the girl -- Lucy -- into a leading lady. The idea was that she was the daughter of the Overseer, played by her actual father, and Cooper was some vault dweller from another section.
The whole thing was convoluted. He did cowboy flicks and the sort that had a showdown at the end. This sci-fi garbage went right over his head, this future projection of the what-if. He didn't have time for the what-if.
He had a daughter he needed to vy for custody of and an expensive divorce on the horizon. And Barb had the best lawyers money could buy and he'd never thought they'd end up like this. There was no pre-nup and nothing to protect him.
And he didn't have a goddamn lighter.
"You shouldn't smoke."
Cooper near growled around the butt of his cigarette, only just keeping himself civil at the last moment. He turned towards Lucy, unable to mistake her for anyone else. There was something about her vacant, pretty face that irked him, those giant goddamn eyes.
"It's bad for you. I read an article about it."
"Maybe you'd be better off reading your lines again," Cooper said with a wave of his hand. He dug in his jacket pocket, the one he'd worn to set.
Bingo.
Lucy crossed her arms and leaned against the vault railing. It was strange to do the filming down, a hundred feet or so beneath the surface, but it made for impressive sets. They were around the corner from the rest of the camera crew and cast.
And they were alone for the first time since shooting. Most times, Cooper had a few stage hands or interns at his heel. And he didn't see Lucy around much, except for scenes. Didn't chase her down, didn't much think of her.
Except now he's aware she's still in the wedding dress she'd been in earlier. Stage blood soaked the stomach of it, thick streams of blood from where she'd been stabbed. But he'd saved her and they'd shared a chaste kiss for the camera.
And then he hadn't seen her.
"I thought you'd be a better kisser."
Cooper didn't withhold the glare, couldn't bring himself to give a fuck. "Pardon?"
"Just -- the kiss. Didn't really..." Lucy narrowed her eyes at him. "I grew up watching your movies. My dad is a big fan. I always figured you'd be a good kisser, but you aren't."
"You ain't much yourself, either," Cooper said with a raised brow. "Like a fish, sweetheart. Cold."
"I'm not a fish," she snapped back. "That's very mean. I -- I know I was mean first but I just thought you could do better."
Cooper couldn't help but laugh to himself at this miserable brat who'd sought him out to complain about an on-screen kiss. He took a long drag, his gaze slanted across the backs of his knuckles.
"You're here 'cause your daddy yanked some strings," Cooper shrugged a shoulder. "My only obligation is to make a movie for the studio. I'm not your damn boyfriend-for-hire, trying to get you off for the cameras."
Cooper was a professional and on his best behaviour -- usually. But the long days of filming for a corporation rooted in the exploitation of the country he'd fought for... That patience wore thinner with each moment he was alone with this brat.
"I'm here as an actress -- "
"You can act?" Cooper asked, mock surprise as he pressed a hand to his chest.
Lucy had the gall to look offended.
Cooper took another drag, his hip notched against the railing. "It's a movie, darling. I've been doing this shit for years. They ain't gonna let people tongue each other to high hell."
"That..."
"That is exactly how it works," Cooper said as he ashed his cigarette onto the grate beneath his feet. "It's not about you, it's about the shot."
Lucy looked at him like he'd slapped her. "I know it's about the shot."
"Could've fooled me." Cooper huffed out a breath. He'd kissed plenty of women for his films and he was a consummate professional. If the audience bought into it, that was all he needed. He didn't give a damn if his co-star got butterflies over it.
Especially not the daughter of some jackass at Vault-Tec, for a project that was nothing more than an empty propaganda piece. But he didn't have much choice.
"I'm here because it's important to my father. Vault-Tec wanted to keep as many roles as they could within the company -- "
"Nepotism."
"To promote the culture they want within the movie, which is carefully curated -- "
"Cultish."
"To their... Could you stop doing that?"
Cooper crossed his arms, his cigarette nearly finished. The vault had good enough ventilation that the smoke disappeared but the smell lingered. He pushed away from the railing, his expensive smile slack across his lips.
"I had my fill of the Vault-Tec propaganda, sweetheart. Don't make a difference if it's from a pamphlet or a pretty girl, I'm just doing what I'm being paid to."
"Wasn't it your wife -- ex-wife -- who brought you in originally?"
Cooper's neck twitched as he looked down at Lucy, as she smart-mouthed her way right into some shit she didn't know anything about. He tipped his head to the side, the annoying collar of the vault suit biting into his jawline.
"So you believed what Vault-Tec thought originally." Lucy toyed with the stain on her white dress, her fingers tugged at the frayed edge. "What changed?"
"Nothing," Cooper said, his voice flat.
Lucy met his eye, her head tilted to contrast the angle of his head. She settled a hand on the railing, uncertainty replaced her uppity edge from before. "I'm not trying to spy on you or get information. You just -- had your life together, and then you're getting divorced."
"It happens," Cooper said, aware now that she was between him and the crew. The vault split into spidery webs in all directions, though. He could leave her if he wanted. But then he'd end up who knows where, deep in the belly of this steel nest.
But they were alone, and she'd inched closer to him.
Cooper saw the leading ladies he worked with as colleagues. Sometimes they'd have to kiss or imitate gentle moments or intimacy -- but for the most part, he could compartmentalise it. But Lucy didn't act. She couldn't. She was an atrocious leading lady and she read everything as if she were saying it herself.
Like a porn actress, saying shit to get through to the action, rushing through the writing like it didn't matter.
It wasn't her fault. He had the sneaking suspicious she had no interest in acting or in this movie; that she was only doing it because her father asked her to do it. Maybe even so she could have an excuse to meet him, he realized dimly as she looked up at him with wide hazel eyes.
That separation -- of leading lady and of a romantic partner -- muddled with her. Because he didn't even like her. He didn't want to get to know her. He hated her father and he wanted nothing to do with this company.
And she was closer to him than not, and they'd kissed a handful of times, and she'd said he sucked at it.
Cooper rolled his jaw as Lucy didn't have the guts to do more than she had. Her moony eyes fixed up at him like a challenge. And then he felt his resolve snap because it wasn't like he had much to lose. This wasn't a real acting gig and she wasn't a real leading lady.
His hand snapped out, fingers and thumb dug into her cheek. He brought her close, to see what she'd do. The answer was -- not much. She didn't shout or push him away, their mouths inches apart as he hovered close to her, examining her beneath his lashes.
"Bad kisser -- that what you said?"
Lucy swallowed hard enough to nudge his hand. "Well, you were. I'm not going to lie to you to spare your ego."
Cooper made a soft sound from the back of his throat as he kissed her. The distant crack and shift of the crew as they moved their cameras from one vault room to another should be a deterent but Cooper doesn't care.
He's single, isn't he. Has been for a few months. He'd not acted on it, hadn't felt the urge to, but he's as trapped as ever in the shadow of what Barb had done to him. It's only fair he make use of that shadow to indulge, even if it's just to prove a point to this girl Lucy.
There's some inherent amusement to how she melted into the kiss. She wanted it far more than she'd let on, that soft mewing, moaning neediness as he stroked her long brown hair out of her face. He threaded his fingers softly through her hair, hand on either side of her face, fingers combing through her hair.
Her back was arched over the railing as he gave her the kiss she'd probably expected earlier, the one he wasn't about to throw out on camera. There's standards for cinema and he didn't want to waste film or time.
But then her fingers were on the zipper of the stupid fucking vault suit. He didn't stop her, even as she yanked it down and slipped her hand along his stomach.
If anything, he pushed harder against her. The fluffy white skirt of her wedding dress made it hard to get much for himself. But with a yank of her knee and the shift of her weight, he had her seated on the railing. Her shoulder caught one of the metal frames, to keep her pinned in place.
If this were any other job or any other actress, he'd give a fuck.
But it's Vault-Tec, through and through.

It’s 2024, we should know how this works by now: when you are parasocially attached to a creator or media, any criticism of said creator or media makes you feel like you are being personally attacked—and worse, accused of being a bad person for enjoying that creator or media.
For people who are upset by the criticism coming Dropout’s way, I need you to hear me. It’s okay to love Dropout and Dimension 20–I do too! I love it so much! No one is telling you that you’re a bad person for liking these things, or that our favorite people behind Dropout are bad people.
In fact, the criticism I’ve seen is coming from other Dropout fans. We want Dropout to be better, so we’re asking it to change and include more transfem and visibly disabled cast members. I don’t waste my breath with a lot of media, because I don’t have the spoons for that shit. Most companies do not give a fuck about me or people like me. Dropout is different. It’s because they are such an amazing company that I think they will listen.
Some may disagree with me, and that’s valid, but I truly think the lack of transfem and disabled rep comes from an oversight, rather than actual malice. It can be hard to hear the voices of people when those voices are not there, and our society is designed to hide our voices from public view.
The reason people are harsher about it than I am is because usually when marginalized groups politely criticize media, we are ignored. Agitation is a proven strategy to at least get the criticism seen. Plus a lot of times people need to vent, and telling marginalized people that they need to be nice to those in power is some straight up bullshit.
Please don’t mistake this as a personal attack or an attack on the people at Dropout. I found out recently that Danielle Radford is disabled and uses a cane and it meant the world to me. Especially with how amazing she’s been on this most recent season of Misfits and Magic.
I don’t have mobility issues, but I do have other disabilities that make moving around painful, and having my favorite show feature someone who also deals with that stuff is amazing. I don’t know another cast member or PC who is disabled like that. I’m sure there are, but we don’t see get to see that—disability in this case is also hidden away.
I just had to get that off my chest because I’m seeing the community eat itself for criticism that should be no big deal.

1, 3, 5, 12, 17?
1 - Platform of choice when gaming?
Right now it's PC, but for the longest time it was the Xbox 360, and before that I was pretty ride or die for the Playstation 2. So much stuff has crossplay now and the library of games (emulated, legal, and otherwise) is the best on computers
3 - Favorite boss?
I just beat Metal Gear Solid 1 pretty recently so I'm still chewing on how creative the Psycho Mantis fight was. I-No in GGXX is fun too. I really like bosses that are puzzles
5 - Most memorable gaming moment?
Ohhh probably something from a coop game... Beating Halo 3 for the first time with 4 people is definitely up there. You have to drive through this platform while it's crumbling and exploding around you and then you ramp off a piece of the platform into an airship to clear the mission. Doing it with 4 people is pure chaos lmfao I don't think all 4 of us made it (only 1 needs to make it to win)
Doing pvp in Dark Souls 1 with a buddy, both of us buckass naked, and dual wielding whips is up there too. The psychic damage to our opponents was worth getting our teeth kicked in lol
12 - Favorite game character?
Would it be cheating to say Sol Badguy for this
17 - Do you play mobile games?
Yeah 😫 A cruel hex is cast upon me that forces me to play Granblue Fantasy, so I play that pretty regularly in the mornings to keep myself from falling back asleep after my alarms go off... I play Vita Mahjong and a physics game called "Sand - Box" sometimes too. I've got Fire Emblem Heroes installed to try to get me to play something that doesn't drive me insane (GBF...) but the gameplay isn't as engaging and I'm falling off pretty hard
I used to be ride or die for Alchemy Stars but.... It EOS'd.... Rest in peace.... Gone but not forgotten....
For a long time I played Puzzle & Dragons too but the power creep become unbearable and then the devs nuked all the fan wikis so I finally uninstalled it after like a billion years of it clogging up my phone storage
Most of the stuff I have on my phone is like... Library/eReader, music, wiki, or language learning apps though 🤓🤓🤓

Mission Light
The Story
You’ve worked hard to build the life you have.
You live in New York, completed your education with good grades, landed your dream job and it seems perfect on paper. Your coworkers are friendly and your work brings new challenges each day.
Others would envy the stability and success you’ve achieved for yourself.
So why does it feel like something is missing?
Now that you’ve reached your goals, why does the life you imagined leaves you feeling empty?
It’s hard to shake the nagging feeling that there must be something more out there, something beyond the ordinary life you’ve built. But what can you do? You can’t just quit, can you?
However when an old friend—someone you had a falling out with years ago—contacts you again, demanding that you owe him something. You, despite knowing he’s involved with shady people, agree to work with him.
For the first time in a long while, you feel alive, full of adrenaline—this is what you were missing, right?
But things quickly spiral out of control. What he has drawn you into is far deeper than you ever imagined.
The world you thought you knew is only a small part of a hidden, dangerous reality.
You soon discover that your coworkers are secret agents and when unexpected superpowers awaken within you, you realize that you have no choice but to join them, now that you are a part of this big mess.

Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) Knuckles Part 1: The ancient echidna sport of Hot and Cold
I accidentally skipped the first cutscene because I forgot that I’m currently playing the modded PC version. Oops
Anyway , it’s Knuckles! It’s the Treasure Hunting stages!
It’s fine
I think that most elements of Knuckles’ gameplay are due to the inherent difficulties of translating a gameplay style based around such high level mobility, in a 3D world. Infinite wall climbing and gliding would destroy linear levels in a 3D space, at least Tails’ flight has a limit. So the levels are made non-linear and more exploration focused and the objective is no longer about reaching a goal
This is all fine and Knuckles’ gameplay is perfectly functional
It just...feels lacking in terms of general level design
It’s certainly much better than Tails’, since Knuckles’ gameplay is fundamentally different than both Sonic and Tails’ and his levels are not quite carbon copies of Sonic’s either, but the non linear nature also means that most of his levels don’t really have much of a sense of flow like a typical linear stage has. Speed Highway and Lost World are basically big boxes with no real gimmicks or particularily interesting obstacles or setpieces to set them apart, one being more horizontal, the other more vertical. Red Mountain mostly has its sheer size that sets it apart. Casinopolis can be rather fun with some of its Emerald Shard positions, like in the mouth of the lion statue, or inside the golden Sonic statue, it’s a level full of fun little setpieces and memorable elements. Sky Deck has a unique gimmick in the form of tilting the Egg Carrier itself with a lever.
But again: only 5 levels, then it’s over. It really needed more meat on its bones. At the very least Knuckles’ pacing is much better than Tails’ too, given his lack of side acts as well.
Another thing to note is the rng factor of the Emerald Shards: this is necessary, as having the Shards always be in the same locations every time would kind of go against the whole exploration angle these levels are going for, but it can also lead to them being a bit inconsistent in their fun factor. Nothing major but think of it like this: sometimes when I play Casinopolis I get to explore the upper levels where the pirate ship is....other times the 3 Shards are all on the bottom floor, with maybe 2 being held by some easy to reach enemies, so it can be a bit up in the hair how much enjoyment I can get out of these levels during any given playthrough
You know the Emerald Altar has always bugged me. Even as a kid I thought: what happened to the Hidden Palace? Are they retconning it? Because it makes much more logical sense to house the Master Emerald there since it’s, y’know, hidden inside of an active volcano. Sure Eggman knows of the Hidden Palace now, but you’d think that sticking the ME out in the open would be much worse, given just how easily Eggman destroys it in this game. I dunno it’s always been weird to me how SA1 is dead set at reinforcing the series’ canon throught things like setting the Emeralds’ design in stone and introducing the Eggman monicker to the west...but then they go and seemingly ignore a location that was such a big part of Sonic 3′s story
So as I’ve said plenty of times already, SA1 is a game that is very interested in reintroducing the old cast for this new era. Sonic and Eggman are virtually unchanged, aside from their designs (and Eggman’s penchant for no longer really being the main villain, we’ll get to that eventually), most likely because they’re the two biggest constants of the series, plus Sonic is Sega’s mascot, so they must remain recognizable. Plus y’know: pure good vs pure evil, they don’t really need much development to fulfill their narrative roles
Tails and Amy do receive significant character arcs that are tied in their pre existing character flaws, and as such they are allowed to evolve in perfectly organic ways, becoming their best selves in a way that still feels true to their original selves
Knuckles presents a unique case because, when you think about it, he already went through a character arc of his own, back in Sonic 3! Sure it was much simpler, simply him learning that Sonic was to be trusted and to respect him. Still, this technically makes Knuckles the very first character in the series to be dynamic
So SA1 is in the position to test this character development by throwing Knuckles into a familiar situation: Eggman trying to trick him into fighting Sonic. This is a classic narrative beat, where a hero is put through a familiar trial they once failed at, just to show how much they’ve grown since the last time, think how Mephiles tries to make Shadow join the dark side i 06 only to be told to fuck off because Shadow’s altready goe through his own game where Daddy Doom did just that, so now Shadow knows better
So now it’s Knuckles’ chance to prove how far he’s come as a character since his experience on Angel Island long ago! Isn’t that right, Knuckles?
Knuckles...?

Writing interview tag!
Ohoho this one is exciting! Thanks @the-letterbox-archives for the tags. Your answers were sick, it was a very interesting read. This one is a long one, but the goal is to answer a LOT of questions. A empty list will be at the bottom with the tags!
About me
When did you start writing?
Oo im not sure? I started “ seriously “ writing a couple of years ago when I took a writing class, but I wouldn’t say I was really a “ writer “ untill I started working on How Our World Ended a few years ago
Are there different genres or themes you enjoy reading other than the ones you write?
Oh 100% I haven’t been reading that much lately, but I mostly read horror and mystery. While I sneak in horror sometimes, I’ve never really been compelled to write a mystery story
Is there an author you want to emulate, or are compared to often?
If I’m honest, no to both of those. I have authors I love, but i have my own thing. And people don’t compare me to any author. Weither that’s good or bad is up to you I guess
Can you tell me a bit about your writing space?
I write with my old, shitty Chromebook on my bed with my pillow propped up as a back rest. My PC keyboard is very loud and just not too fun to write with, and I despise writing on mobile. If I’m in the mood, I turn on some music and get to work
What’s your most effective way to muster up a muse?
I’m gonna answer this question in two different ways, how I get inspiration for ideas, and how I get in the writing vibe. For the first, it’s honestly just seeing something I like and going “ I wanna do that “ or listening to a song while some grand story plays out in my head. For ACTUALLY writing, that’s tricky. I normally write late, but if a friend is up talking about whatever thing ive really liked as of late can help. Thinking ahead to scenes I’m excited to write helps, especially when I listen to music that I tie to those moments.
Did the place(s) you grew up in influence the people and/or places you write about?
I mean, I’m sure they did subconsciously somehow- but I tend to write in fantasy, and my suburban ass life doesn’t really lend to my ideas well. Though I will say, my moms fondness for museums has inspired Paintings a good bit
Are there any reoccurring themes in your writing? If so, do they surprise you?
Yeah, a good few. I’d say grief, and how it impacts people is the most prevalent theme across my stories. This is a bit surprising since I’ve ( fortunately ) not lost too many people in my life
Characters:
would you please tell me about your current favorite character?
Oo this one is HARD. I can pick my favorite for each story easily but OVERALL is really hard. I’m torn between Lars from Souls Collide, or The Artist from How Our World Ended. Both characters mean so much to me, and I’d say those two are the characters I’ve made with the most depth. Ughh this is difficult. I guess I’ll say Lars for now, just because of how prevalent and important to me he’s been
Also I know it’s not what the question is asking, but my favorite character that I DIDNT make is Sunny from OMORI
Which of your characters would you be friends with in real life?
I think I’d vibe with most of the souls collide cast, considering they were initially based off of people I knew. I also think I’d get along with Asim and Astera from Paintings, along with Lyra and Val from How Our World Ended.
which characters would you dislike the most of you met them?
Oh god most of them. I write TERRIBLE people. Samaueal would just kill me- I’d hate Nelios, he’s a dick, Ryder from Souls Collide was based off of a person I disliked in real life, Salazar is pretentious and WOULD kill me, Dimitri is the worst- I can go on. But the worst is Samaueal, considering he would just kill me for the hell of it
Tell me about the process of coming up with your characters?
It’s real weird. I either see something I like, and want to steal it in some way, so i base a character off of them. Asim and Astera are heavily influenced by Mary and Reginald from Cemetery Mary, Hart is inspired by Walter White, the whole council was inspired by the organization from Kingdom Hearts. But for characters I didn’t partially steal, it mostly just comes to me when listening to music. Some characters were also created out of necessity, and evolved far past that.
Do you notice any reoccurring themes/traits in your characters?
Yup. I tend to write certain types of characters very formally, my protags are often shaken by one particularly harrowing event, and they almost all have some sort of huge internal fight with themselves.
How do you picture your characters?
It depends! Most of the time, I imagine every character in the style I wanted Souls Collide to be, but for certain scenes ( especially fights with Res ) I see it in live action.
My writing:
what’s your reason for writing?
I have a whole lotta ideas and gotta get them out SOMEHOW.
Is there any specific comment or type of comment from readers that you find particularly motivating?
Literally anything positive anyone says makes my day. You all have been more supportive than irl friends. But the things that make my day are either people predicting what comes next in private circles, and for comments here, saying that people like a character or are interested in a story makes me beam. I will die if I ever get fan art ( in a good way )
How do you want to be thought about by your readers?
However they wanna. You don’t have to see me any way, but I’ve tried to be a positive force here, so I guess that.
What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?
I don’t wanna sound egotistical, but my ideas are really cool ( at least I think so )
What have you been told is your greatest strength as a writer is by others?
I’ve been told that what I can do is impressive. I remember one specific interaction about the artist that was incredibly kind.
How do you feel about your own writing?
It depends. I’m incredibly proud of my recent work. I love how Paintings is coming along, and I think the laster chapters of How Our World Ended are the best things I’ve ever written. Anything over two years old is dogshit though, I was in physical pain rereading the first draft of chapter 4
If you were the last person on earth, would you still write?
Gonna be real, don’t think I’d live. But in the event I continued living for whatever reason, maybe? I don’t know, that’s a hard ass question.
When you write, are you influenced by what others might enjoy reading, do you write purely for yourself, or is it a mix of both?
I write plots entirely for myself, but I try to thing about what issues there are with my plot from a readers perspective. Idk if that sounds crazy, but thinking about stuff from an outsider perspective can be helpful in editing.
Annnd that’s all, this took me life half an hour wow. Here’s the question list ( It’s unspaced so fellow mobile users can actually copy it all ) Thanks for reading it all, if you did, it’s a super fun exercise!
About meWhen did you start writing? Are there different genres or themes you enjoy reading other than the ones you write? Is there an author you want to emulate, or are compared to often?can you tell me a bit about your writing space? What We Know About P5X
(last updated 6/27/25)
Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X) has previously had three beta tests, the first of which ran from March 29th to 31st 2023, the second of which ran from August 18th to 25th 2023, and the third of which ran from January 16th to 31st 2024. The open beta, essentially the game's official launch, began on April 12th 2024. Japan later ran a beta test from November to December 2024. The Japan/US/Europe region (often called the "global") launched on June 26th, 2025!
Here’s a summary of what we know about the game itself so far. Hopefully this’ll be useful, whether you're new around here or not!
I also keep updated posts about the game's story, playable characters, and other useful information, which can be found in this blog's pinned post (along with this post!). Some things may be slightly out of date with official English translations, but I'm doing my best to keep everything up.
Keeping this as succinct as I can, but it's still a little long, so under the cut it goes.
Overview
P5X is a turn-based RPG mobile game with gacha elements, developed by Black Wings Game Studio and published by Perfect World Games. While not directly creating it, it is officially licensed by Atlus and Sega. Atlus has apparently been very involved in its production, including Shigenori Soejima designing the protagonist and his Persona, and Atlus writing the story and collab's plots. This is discussed in more detail in the interviews here if you're curious.
The game's setting has been confirmed to be an alternate/"parallel" world to Persona 5's, though translated promotional information also confirms the plot has something to do with these two worlds interacting through "time and space". While the interaction seems primarily tied to the Collaboration events (see later on in this post), it's supposed to have some relevance to the main plot as well.
As Perfect World Games and Black Wings Game Studio are Chinese game companies, and Atlus and Sega are Japanese game companies, P5X is produced in Chinese and Japanese. The dialogue in-game is voiced in both Japanese and Chinese, with Japanese and Chinese voice actors for the characters. It's currently unknown whether the game will ever get an English cast, but at the moment it does not have one. The official English translation is based on the Japanese dialogue.
Right now, we know the game is available on both mobile (iOS and Android) and PC (Google Play Games and Steam), and it's been officially stated that a console version is planned for after the game releases globally. The first three of the beta tests were closed betas, available only in China, Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong, where players could sign up for a chance to get in, and actual beta accounts were given out via lottery. The open beta requires only a Chinese phone number or Steam account to sign up, although the Taiwan/Macau/Hong Kong version also allows players to log in with a Google account, and the English and Japanese versions are similar. Accounts (at least for mainland/Taiwan/Macau/Hong Kong/Korea?) do not seem to be transferable between other methods and Steam, though players can swap between mobile and PC versions otherwise.
Note that there was some confusion about whether the open beta was the game's official launch at first, due to the language barrier. Posts on this blog prior to 5/15/2024 often refer to it as the "fourth beta" instead, and may erroneously suggest it was just another beta test.
There are specifically two main gachas in the game- a character gacha for gaining teammates, and a weapons gacha for gaining better weapons for those teammates. While the game is extremely similar to Persona 5 overall, there are many aspects, obviously including the gacha, that differ from it, which are summarized below and detailed further in another post.
The Characters
So far, there are 28 new Persona users. These characters can be divided into story teammates and "Phantom Idol" (gacha-only) teammates.
The story teammates so far are the protagonist (codename Wonder), a mysterious owl named Lufel which has sometimes been mistranslated as "Luffy" by fans (codename Cattle), an athletic classmate of the protagonist's named Motoha Arai (codename Closer), a boy from another class with an interest in cooking named Shun Kanou (codename Soy), disciplinary committee member Riko Tanemura (codename Wind), and stage actor from another school Shouki Ikenami (codename Luce). These teammates have all joined as part of the plot of the game.
The "Phantom Idol" teammates ("Kaidoru" in Japanese) are described as being cognitive beings created by Wonder's Velvet Room attendant, Merope, to assist him in the Metaverse, based on people Wonder meets, though they are only copies. You can find more detailed information about each of them in the linked post, in additional to general information about how they function.
So far, they include Motoha's best friend Tomoko Noge (codename Moko), imaginative first year student Kiyoshi Kurotani (codename Key), Wonder's family friend Kayo Tomiyama (codename Okyann), college freshman from China Yaoling Li (codename Rin), aspiring actor Leo Kamiyama (codename Leon), Yaoling's traditionally-dressed neighbor Yukimi Fujikawa (codename Yuki), fencing high school student Seiji Shiratori (codename Fleuret), injured ice skater Kotone Montagne (codename Mont), an online friend of Wonder's who goes by the name YUI (codename Bui), 10 year-old math prodigy Haruna Nishimori (codename Riddle), unemployed fisherman Toshiya Sumi (codename Sepia), and aspiring puppeteer Miyu Sahara (codename Puppet).
Later Phantom Idols added after the initial release of the game include student working for her family's store Minami Miyashita (codename Marian), 75 year-old saxophone player Chizuko Nagao (codename Vino), flairtender Yuumi Shiina (codename Phoebe), aspiring musician Ayaka Sakai (codename Chord), medical intern Kira Kitazato (codename Messa), flower-loving third year Masaki Ashiya (codename Cherish), fashion student/Shibuya mascot superfan Runa Dogenzaka (codename Howler), firefighter Mio Natsukawa (codename Matoi), racing fan Mayumi Hashimoto (codename Turbo), recovering singer Manaka Nagao (codename Ange), and high schooler/voice actress Ichigo Shikano (codename Berry). Alternate versions of characters, such as ones related to events or the character's Confidant, have been added as well.
The full group of Phantom Thieves from Persona 5 Royal also appear as Phantom Idols: Joker, Mona, Skull, Panther, Fox, Queen, Oracle, Noir, Violet, and Crow. Datamining also found some of Wolf’s battle voice lines from P5S at least in the first beta, and an icon from P5S with Sophie in every beta and the official release, suggesting they may later be added as well. Joker, at the very least, seems to have some larger role in the plot, as Wonder has a dream about them fighting at the start of the game, and later what seems to be a Phantom Idol Joker comes out of nowhere to rescue Wonder and Cattle in Mementos. Wonder is also able to use his universe's Leblanc to visit the Leblanc of Joker's universe, and spend time with the P5 Thieves there.
There is also a multi-chapter Persona 5 Collab event, which involves the P5X and P5 Phantom Thieves meeting in strange Metaverse locations that mix aspects of both P5 and P5X's Palaces. Similar to the PQ games, the teams cannot leave these areas until they defeat the ruler of each area, and afterward, none of them seem to retain their memories of the events, though they regain these memories when they enter the next location to appear. Later, a P5R collab event was held as well (see the same link as the original P5 event above).
A Persona 3 Reload collaboration was announced after the conclusion of the P5R collab. The Persona 3 protagonist (as Makoto Yuki), Yukari Takeba, Akihiko Sanada, Junpei Iori, Mitsuru Kirijo, Fuuka Yamagishi, Aigis, Koromaru, Ken Amada, and Shinjiro Aragaki are all either currently in the game, or to be added in the future.
Munehisa Iwai, Tae Takemi, and Chihaya Mifune also return in P5X. Iwai runs the weapon gacha, Takemi sells medicine like in P5, and Chihaya tells fortunes. The other original P5 confidants’ portraits and 3D models have been found in every betas' data, and the Councillor Arcana card was with the other cards in the second, third, and fourth betas' data specifically, but it’s currently unknown whether they’ll actually return in any capacity.
The developers have also repeatedly expressed interest in having collabs with the other numbered Persona series games in the future. Izanagi and Asterius have been in the game files since the beta tests.
Music
Several new songs appear in P5X, several of which feature vocals by Lyn: the first opening song "Ambitions and Visions", the second opening song "Show Stealer", "Last Strike", "Wake Up Your Hero", "Shadow", "Fatal Desire", and "Gone With the Storm". The new instrumental tracks so far include background music for the Palaces, background music for special fights, a new music track for Mementos and some other areas affiliated with Mementos, and some music for P5X's rhythm minigame/side quest, where Wonder plays music as a member of his school's music club.
When Ayaka Sakai (Chord) was added, two songs sung by her were also added to the game. It's been announced that some more new songs sung by Manaka Nagao (Ange) will also be added to the game alongside her.
Locations
The majority of P5 and P5R’s locations have been confirmed for P5X, including Yongen-Jaya, Kichijoji, Shibuya, and Shinjuku among others, but the protagonist lives in a new location called Zoshigaya, and goes to a new school called Kokatsu Academy located in Shimokitazawa. Another school named Kiga High School becomes particularly relevant in the story's fourth chapter.
(Note that not every store is exactly identical to the P5 version; the Big Bang Burger in Shibuya is now called Boom Bang Burger, with no apparent traces of the space theming, and the Crossroads bar in Shinjuku has also been rebranded. Leblanc was also rebranded to a generic coffee shop in previous betas, but in the open beta has been turned back into Leblanc.)
Mementos and the concept of Palaces also return in P5X, though there are some differences. Mementos' floors are no longer randomly generated, and now have set layouts. Related to this, Mementos also now operates as a sort of hub, with characters entering Palaces through Mementos, from the entrance to each Palace located within the massive floors of Mementos. Mementos also has special battle locations apparently similar to “domains” in other gacha games, where completing the fight gives special items to strengthen characters and weapons, generally themed after P5′s Palaces (so far Kamoshida, Madarame, Kaneshiro, and Okumura's Palace-themed "domains" have been found, as well as one that doesn't seem to match any known Palace).
Basic Game Mechanics
For the most part, P5X operates extremely similarly to P5, both in and out of the Metaverse. One notable difference is that there is no calendar- days can pass due to the story, but they're not numbered, instead listed as simply "Yesterday", "Today", and "Tomorrow". There are also more time slots to perform other activities, as Wonder can do two after school activities, two activities even later in the day, and then a final one at night. Performing activities also cost energy, which refills at a rate of 5 per real-world day.
One interesting and more significant change made in this category is that Confidants have a total of 20 ranks, instead of the series-standard 10, though there are still only 10 ranks that actually progress their story. They also haven't been associated with any Arcana, though the P5R Arcana cards have all been found in the second beta's data. A Social Link/Confidant is referred to as a "Synergy" in this game, but this blog generally still calls them Confidants to avoid confusion.
The UI elements of combat look a little different (as well as all the skill animations), appearing to be more optimized for mobile play, but otherwise it seems largely the same to P5, though one notable difference is that Navigator skills can be called in at will (and then have a cooldown), rather than occurring randomly. There is a new kind of special ability called a Highlight, which is similar to P5S’s Showtime attacks where the character executes a special move with their Persona, though not all Highlights are attacks, and some heal or have alternative effects instead.
The protagonist can gain Personas in combat (or from the gacha), though it no longer requires talking to them, and largely only occurs in special battles specifically for that purpose. Challenge battles in the Velvet Room, like in P5R, are available to attempt. Palace exploration also seems relatively standard, even if the Palace itself and the method of entering it is different. One major change is that several shadow/Persona designs have been censored in the mainland China version of the game; this includes Incubus and many others being given shorts, Bugs' stomach being repaired with the blood removed, Mara being given a large hat, Hell Biker and other skeletal Personas having a helmet/mask that obscures the skull, and several female Personas like Lamia being given shirts. However, these changes are purely cosmetic, and also seem to be reverted in the Taiwan/Macau/Hong Kong version (and possibly the Korean version as well).
Miscellaneous
It’s worth noting that because there's a lot of content in the game that has yet to be officially translated to English, new character names can only be absolutely confirmed when they’re either written in Japanese kana (as opposed to the Japanese kanji characters that names are typically written in) or spoken aloud in official material, to confirm which reading of the Japanese name is the intended one for this specific character.
The characters do also have Chinese names, of course, but as the voice acting defaults to Japanese (including in Chinese promotional material), the game is set in Japan, and the English translation is based on the Japanese translation, the names and other terms used by the global release are the Japanese ones. As such, the Japanese names are the ones presented in the Characters section earlier in this post, and are the main ones that this blog uses.
All the codenames, however, are written in English, and thus the most easily confirmed as official.
