Simon Rodia, Watts Towers, 1921-54 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watts_Towers
Process: Rodia worked only with hand tools and used rebar to make the framework. He used wire mesh to wrap around concrete. He also had no predetermined design, so he worked freely to construct these towers.
Form: These pieces were created with steel rebar, concrete, and wire mesh, and are decorated with found objects such as old bottles, figurines, and mirrors.
Content: Rodia said that you either have to be good good or bad bad at something to be remembered for it, so he wanted to try to accomplish either of these things which is why he built the towers.

Raphael, School of Athens, 1509-11, fresco mural http://www.visual-arts-cork.com/famous-paintings/school-of-athens.htm
Form: This is a fresco painting.
Content: Raphael wanted to combine the greatness of both the worldly and spiritual minds and intellect, which is why he depicts many philosophers and other notable individuals in a space together.
Process: Raphael was commissioned to make this painting, so he came up with the idea and created this painting using the fresco technique.

Albert Namatjira, Central Australian Landscape, 1936, watercolor on woven paper https://www.artistsfootsteps.com/html/Namatjira_centralaust_landscape.htm
Form:  Namatjira used watercolor paints over pencil on woven paper which was then loosely attached to a board.
Content: During a trip, the artist painted some of his first landscape paintings of his view in Australia.
Process: Namatjira created this work from observation, using pencil to outline some forms and then going over those marks with watercolor paints.

Artwork: Alien Landscape, Artwork
Artist: Richard   Bizley
Website: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/7-alien-landscape-artwork-richard-bizley.html
Form: This is a planet filled with life, but it’s not Earth. Weird bird creatures are flying across the ocean. Volcano eruption in the distance like on Earth. This planet doesn’t feel Earth with the huge planet in distance and weird looking plants.
Content: I think the meaning of the piece is beyond the imagination because this planet doesn’t feel like Earth and it’s not Earth. Also, the artist believes there’s life in the galaxy.
Process: I think he did sightseeing for lands and start sketching ideas for them. Later, he started to sketch it out on the canvas and he started to paint it once he finished the sketch.
I chose this piece because I planned to do a fictional landscape and I like the creativity for the planet.

Place Post-Critique Response
With this project I achieved what I set out to do. Which was to create a tranquil journey that people would go on when viewing this artwork. The weaknesses of this project would be not enough video overlay. This should happen throughout the full video. When you enter a regular scene without the distorted reality effect it tends pull you out of the video.
Some suggestions to improve this artwork would be to use more of the overlay effect. This effect achieved some great responses from people in the class. Some found it peaceful, while some found it jarring or threatening – when the water would appear to flow over the bridge, or the crunch of the snow. It was interesting how some of the experiences were mixed. However, the overall experience with the sound and the meditative motions of the camera with overlay tended to be a meditative one.
I learned a lot from doing this project. I really want to explore video more. There are a few items I’d like to invest in; although not necessary for this project, a remote shutter, and a gimbal camera stabilizer to start. These would be nice tools to help my future video endeavors.

POST-CRITIQUE RESPONSE
I’m so impressed by this critique, is really change my thought about how to view an artwork and how to present an artwork. Few things that I would like to change for my project are first the casting heart. There has to a more interesting way to hang it and work with the form but I’m still thinking about it. Second, the plastic around it I would like to put more and maybe cut it in a more interesting shape I think that looks a little bit random. And I would like to have two of my work join together in the bottom and also be able to break apart as two work.
Place is really an interesting topic to talk about, I would love to make a whole series with different out form that hangs with different shapes to represent different places, keep thinking about what other places mean for me or mean for everyone. I feel like choose home as the place would be the easier one because everyone would have empathy or we have a common understanding of home, but if I do a series then it won’t be that easy for people to guess what this might represent for.
Overall, I’m happy with my project but I think I can do better.

Place Research Journal
FORM: This is a short animation. Adobe illustrator and after effects were probably used or applications similar to it.
CONTENT: It was a story about how the illustrator overcame the mindset she had of not being a good enough artist. That was shown through her present day perspective and her childhood perspective.
PROCESS: A story-board was created to keep track of scenes and sequencing. Character drawings were more than likely sketched out and then drawn using illustrator or another digital drawing application. And the sequencing was more than likely put together using video editing or something like after effects.

Project 4: Research Journal #2
Camille Pissarro
La Place due Théâtre Français
1898
Tumblr media
Form: Oil painting
Content: One of 15 paintings in a set he started creating in 1897 after his two sons died at different times, but horribly. In this particular work, it has a theatre in the background called “the circular Place du Theatre Francais.” It is placed the foreground, from which the street starts to go off into the horizon line. This depicted area of the city had high-class shops and was the heart of consumerism in the capital. The streets were depicted wet with rain.
Process: Just painted with oil. Nothing else.

Project Four Ideas
For my first project idea, I’d like to make a sort of performance piece. My idea is to have images of places that are significant to me (ie. my childhood homes, my current apartment, my boyfriend’s aunts house, places where I’ve accomplished the most, etc) and use these images to be projected onto my body using a projector. For this, I’d need to gather images most likely by taking them myself, and editing them. I’d either leave them as a whole rectangular image or crop them so as to make them the shape of my body. I could also take another approach and find these locations on a map, possibly drawing them out myself, and then putting a pin on top of the location and positioning myself so that the pin is on top of my heart. The concept behind this idea is the simple phrase “home is where the heart is”. Additionally, I’d like to be able to take my art to a different level. I’ve never done a performance piece and I’d like to push myself to experience that.
My second project idea is to make a sort of artifact of a place or places significant to me. To do this, I could use a technique called photogrammetry where you take a ton pictures of an object, or in this case a house or building, from many different angles, load them into a program, and it gives you a 3D scan of what you took pictures of. I would then use these scans to create prints. With these prints, I would then vacuum form them, giving me a sort of mold or the houses/buildings. From there, I could either make silicone castings, or I could use a food-grade plastic to vacuum form and make either little pastries or chocolates or even little pierogi of these forms. This would be signifying an overall home-y feel, as there was an amount of baking in my household, and the pierogi would appeal to my polish culture and be a sort of tribute to my late grandmother. This piece would also be commentary about how nothing lasts forever and how although you lose pieces of yourself and your past, those memories have still been consumed by you (eating and brain remembrance) and will stick with you.
For my final project idea I would be making a collage of all of the places significant to me. I would probably print places out and take clippings from maps to physically collage them. The material and/or shape that I would be collaging these images on to would have to be significant to solidify the symbolism behind this idea. For this one I could also go take current pictures, and have “before” pictures as well, or images from the past. This would be particularly interesting with my childhood home, seeing as my family hasn’t lived there for almost ten years.

Post-Critique Response
My strengths in this project were the form of the orbs or bubbles, the perspective,  and the colors of the background.  People said that they like the form in this piece with the size of orbs decreases as the orbs going towards the house. Also, they like how the orbs reaching to the top of the canvas. They like the perspective of the orbs which they make think you are far away from the figure.  They liked the color choices for this piece because it blends well with the orbs.
My weaknesses are the house and the orbs at the top. They said that the house was too small to be a house which I agree with. I thought making it smaller can give an illusion of the house is far away. I can improve from this house by making bigger with white and black paint to change the structure of the house. They also point out how there’s a lot of negative space at the top of the canvas. I can easily improve it with black and graphite by drawing the orbs with graphite then paint it black.
I learned that you have to be careful with paint because I had a hard time to paint over the green with yellow. You can still see some part of green in the yellow. I might do a series of paintings with different colors but keep the forms. I want to test different colors that mix well together. Also, I might try different shapes instead of arcs because I feel like it can create more of a challenge.

Project 4 — Proposal
FORM:
Digital Video, displayed on the TV.
PROCESS:
Recording footage on a camera, the paths I’ll walk down, and rivers that are close to homes I’ve lived in. Then, I’ll be putting the recordings together -- the footage of flowing water overlaid onto the footage of paths I will be walking down. The sound will be enhanced, so you can hear the crunch of footsteps, the breath as I walk, and the babble of the river.
CONTENT:
With this video I want to create a surreal experience of paths I used to travel as a young child, and the places I would explore. I want to tie this in with the tranquility of rivers that are close to places I’ve lived in the past. This will be a personal video to myself, of past memories that I will be reflecting on as I take this journey. To the viewer I want to capture visuals and sounds to stimulate and enthrall them. They may not understand everything, but I would like them to enjoy the journey with me through the footage I compile.
